On the ground, in the air and leading the pack - nuun was everywhere at this year's City 2 Surf.

nuun a big winner at the 2017 Sydney City 2 Surf.

On

Sunday 13 August 2017, the world’s largest fun run race took place with over 80,000 participants from all around the world taking on the most iconic course in Australia between Sydney’s CBD and Bondi Beach.

nuun was the official hydration sponsor for the highly popular event with more than 200,000 nuun cups produced and nearly 30,000 litres provided to all participants along the challenging 14km course.

Adding to the success was a win by reigning City 2 Surf champion Harry Summers, who successfully defended his 2016 title in a fiercely contested men’s race. Harry was also a nuun ambassador for the event day and was sporting the nuun singlet for the race, gaining additional coverage for the brand.

We also delivered engaging content leading up to the race with social media posts on training and hydration tips from our nuun Ambassador Adam Denison and Head Personal Trainer Dr. Stacy Sims.

Other highlights of the day included nuun

skywriting, which was scheduled at the start line of the race and two additional at the finish line down at Bondi Beach. We also sold nuun and provided sampling prior to the event at the CITYFIT Expo which took place in the new International Convention Centre at Darling Harbour.

The event was broadcast through Facebook Live on SMH.com.au and CityRunSeries to an estimated 1 million viewers, as well as featuring on every national TV news network.

It was the biggest activation to date for nuun and was considered a huge success for us and for the nuun brand.

A HISTORY OF INNOVATION From the creation of one innovative product 28 years ago, Nite Ize has grown to a globally distributed company with over 200 employees and 500+ products in the range.

Here's a look at some of the major milestones that shaped Nite Itze into the company it is today...

BUSINESS SO SUCCESSFUL. HERE'S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY: Where did you get your idea or inspiration to start Nite Ize?

I wanted a way to hold my flashlight and still use my hands, which lead to our first innovation— the Nite Ize Mini Flashlight Holder. I never had any idea that I was going to start a company, but that one idea led to 28 years creating innovative solutions to compelling problems.

What was your mission from the beginning?

Our mission was always to build products that work really well. We set out to create quality solutions that are built to last, and people see that attention to detail as they use our products.

Where does the name “Nite Ize” originate?

It was inspired by original product, the Nite Ize Mini Flashlight Holder, which turned a small flashlight into a headlamp. The name Nite Ize originated with the raccoon, since they are small nocturnal animals with excellent night vision.

What is unique about your business?

We are incredibly passionate about what we do. Our employees get excited when they see Nite Ize products being used by people on the street. It’s important to me that every employee, from the people assembling products up to our executive team, understands that they are a valued part of that product’s creation and success.

To what do you attribute the success of Nite Ize? I attribute the success of Nite Ize to innovation.

We develop products to solve problems that are important to people, and we solve them in ways that have never been done before.

Where do the ideas for your products come from?

People ask me this question a lot. Honestly, our ideas come from listening. If you listen to your customers, you hear what people like, what they don’t like, and what they’d like to see.

The more you listen and use that feedback, the more you discover new ways to give people what they want.

How many employees work at Nite Ize?

We hired our first full-time employee in 1995 and today we have around 230 employees.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

You have to be passionate, have faith in what you are doing and be persistent. There’s a quote I love that says, “True success is overcoming the fear of being unsuccessful.”

If you can control the fear of failure, you can keep moving. Even if there are missteps, you can always change course, but you can’t steer a ship that isn’t moving.

Your head office is located in Boulder Colorado. What made you choose this location and what’s the best part about being located here?

Boulder is an amazing and rare place. I’m an outdoor person, so I being near the mountains and around people who have a ton of energy.

It’s also a very entrepreneurial town and very dynamic. Even after my 28 years of traveling, I’m still very excited to call Boulder home.

Looking to the future, where do you see the company’s direction heading in terms of expanding markets/channels?

Our desire for innovation will guide us just as it has done in the past. We have such a broad swath of channels that we develop products for, but we entered each of those channels with one really unique product that was so new and well-crafted that it allowed us an entry point into that market. We’re just as passionate as we’ve ever been, and we’re very excited to see where the future takes us.

What’s your favourite thing to do in your downtime/holidays?

Fly-fishing and skiing. I like to get out, use our products, and think of new ones—and I do that through activities that get me outside.

remember the excitement as a kid getting my first pocketknife; a compact size, light in weight and with just the essential blade, it was brilliant. Fast-forward a few decades and it is not always easy to find a basic, functional, compact knife that can be just stored in any pocket, or left in the glovebox or anywhere else handy. Leatherman is a brand famous for reinventing the multitool, with its many variants of this highly regarded by all adventurous types, so I was equally intrigued and excited to hear that the Oregonbased company (also famous for its blades) had turned its attention to creating a new interpretation of the ‘pocketable’ knife.

The Leatherman Skeletool KB (a straight blade) and KBx (serrated blade) are the results and look exactly like what my younger self would have envisaged: compact (89mm when folded), lightweight (45g), easy-to-use, and fitted with a 66mm (2.6-inch) blade made from 420 High Carbon (HC) stainless steel. (this steel is ‘softer’ than some other variants, and is very easy to sharpen and is resistant to staining.)

As the name indicates, these knives share the same design DNA as the larger Skeletool multi-tool – minimalist designs with ‘holes’

stamped in the handle and blade to reduce weight – and also share the same spring-loaded metal locking mechanism. The folding action is very smooth, with minimal exertion needed to open the blade. Once the blade is locked it feels very solid in its position and doesn’t twist around the folding point or feel loose at all.

Impressively, to unlock the blade, you need to actually do it yourself – it cannot be accidentally unlocked thanks to how the lock works. The same ingenuity is applied to the clip: this can be removed if you don’t want to clip it to yourself, but when fitted to the knife, is foolproof and reliable in operation.

//EVEN THOUGH VERY LIGHT IN WEIGHT, THE KB AND KBX ARE VERY WELL MADE, WITH TIGHT TOLERANCES AND ROBUST BUILD QUALITY The comment of ‘solidity’ can also be applied to the overall construction of the knives – and explain the impressive 25-year guarantee. Even though very light in weight, the KB and KBx are very well made, with tight tolerances and robust build quality. In the hand and when in use, the knives make their compact size a non-issue; I have large hands and found the 89mm handle still easy to

grasp for tasks ranging from cutting paper for the kids’ art at camp, to shortening thick guy ropes and slicing up some kindling for our camp fire.

Interestingly, I was initially hesitant to put too much force behind the blades when performing certain tasks but soon realised the knife’s ‘small’ appearance belied its robust construction and it could be relied on to tackle whatever I asked of it. Even the KBx’s short serrated section works effectively. I wasn’t sure it would at the start, but it just took a bit of adapting to its shorter length and it worked fine. Oh, and I can also attest to the effectiveness of the bottle opener – with my preference for craft beers, a good opener is a must on any JW camping adventure.

Of course, these compact knives cannot do everything – and they are not designed to – but for the majority of tasks that you’d use a knife for in the outdoors – around the campsite or when hiking, biking, climbing, fishing or paddling – the Leatherman KB and KBx are the ideal all-rounder utensil. And it is this versatility, on top of the compact size, tough build and weight, that explains why I will soon be adding a couple to my gear shed: one for the camp kit, and one for the glovebox. And yeah, I will probably get one of each.

JUSTIN WALKER GIVES US HIS IMPRESSIONS OF THE KAJKA BACKPACK FROM THE SWEDISH OUTDOOR EXPERTS AT FJÄLLRÄVEN.

Fjällräven is a highly regarded Swedish company that has been producing trekking and climbing gear (backpacks, pants, outer shells, shorts and other apparel) for more than 50 years. The company’s excellent reputation has been built on its products’ robust quality and modern designs.

extending the top throat section, found the pack more than up to a week-long trek. If you do need more, there’re also attachment points (secured via elasticised cord) on the top, and more attachment clips on the base, plus there’s zippered sections both inside and outside the lid (which also include a rain cover).

Speaking of the lid; it can be removed and used as a daypack/bumbag if need be, while the gear inside can be accessed via not only the main top opening and the bottom zip section, but also by unzipping two full-length side zips that, along with a Velcro opening, allow you to easily open up the interior of the pack and quickly find what you’re after inside.

The Kajka 55W is a prime example of this; the pack weighs in at 3.1kg empty, which while not light, does reflect its bombproof construction. This includes the tough G-1000 Lite poly/cotton canvas shell (65% polyester/35% cotton) that features a ripstop weave through it, plus the oversized zips and thick straps throughout. Interestingly, the Kajka also has a wooden (Birch) frame, rather than alloy.

Fjällräven touts this choice due to it being eco-friendly (a claimed 90 percent less emissions used to create the frame, compared to aluminium), as well as offering the required combo of strength and flexibility - a must in a load-carrying backpack. There is a small amount of alloy tubing down the sides of the back section on which the side compression straps are mounted – again, ensuring plenty of strength and durability.

Many years of scratching through packs to find something means this gets a huge tick from this tester. Also included is a sleeve for a water reservoir and two mesh storage compartments on each side, along with two smaller zipped pockets on the hip-belt. Speaking of which, the hip-belt uses our more favoured ‘pull-forward’ straps; pulling with both hands forward is far easier – and allows your compression to stay even across your body – than waist belts that clip and are adjusted from a front clip.

t's been quite a while since a poly/cotton canvas backpack has landed in my gear test shed, so it was with plenty of interest we opened up our delivery from Zen Imports to find the Fjällräven Kajka 55W trekking pack inside, and noted its construction.

Fitment is simple thanks to Fjällräven’s Perfect Fit Adjustment System. This harness-fit setup comprises both a vertical adjusting harness for different back lengths, but also two tabs behind the shoulder straps, with buttons, that allow you to unclip the shoulder harness, and then move it out/in according to your shoulder width, before re-clipping into the row of button tabs. It sounds a bit fiddly but in testing we have found it dead simple to use and it does make a huge difference to overall pack fit for the different sized testers who have used the pack. In short, it is one of the standouts of this pack.

Other features of the pack are the separate lower/upper sections, with easy access to both via a storm lid up top and a zip down the bottom. The Kajka 55W is deceptive in its size in regards to what you can fit inside it; we’ve filled it way up more than we normally would and, after

Fjällräven is entering a hugely competitive market with this backpack, but with its robust build quality that guarantees many years of service, plethora of useful features (no gimmickry here), generous cargo sizing, unique harness system (the ability to adjust for shoulder width is a standout), and the overall attention to detail should see the Swedes make a big impression.

Steps to Terrific Travel Photography We caught up with award winning adventure photographer Chris Bray at an airport just long enough to get his top five tips for taking better travel photos.

Here's his recipe for capturing that perfect shot while your travelling!

1 Get Inspired Google Image search wherever it is you’re going before you get there, and you’ll immediately find hundreds of great example photos revealing all the best views, vantage points and interesting features you might want to visit.

Popping into a local photography gallery on arrival can also be a great source of inspiration. Sure, we’re all looking for our own unique shots - and I’m not suggesting you copy someone else’s - but doing some homework like this can be a great way to fast-track you to the right locations and give you some initial ideas from where you can then let your own creativity flow.

Anything but Eye-level

Ok so you’re on location, and you’ve found your subject.

Don’t spoil it now by just capturing the same eye-level scene that everyone else sees standing there. Find an interesting perspective for a more creative shot. Climb on something for a higher view, or crouch down low to shoot upward or maybe even find a cool reflection from a puddle. Normal is boring!

3 Composition Yes, bizarre new angles are great, but some basic composition laws still apply! Think about your ‘Rule of Thirds’ (Don’t just plonk your subject or the horizon in the middle. Divide your shot into thirds – both vertical and horizontal - and organise your photo onto these lines – ideally put things right on the intersection of those lines.) and ‘Leading Lines’ (Lines flowing into your shot help guide the viewer’s eye through your photo) - try to find them, and position these leading lines to slide in through the corners..

4 Check the Background Although technically still ‘composition’ this point is honestly so important - and ruins so many photos that it deserves it’s own heading! Just before you take the shot, glance into the background of your photo and nine times out of ten you’ll realise it’s a mess of awkward colours, lines, shadows and distractions. Simply shifting a little one way or the other, you can usually find a clean, contrasting-coloured background that your subject will really stand out against. It’s so easy to do and makes such a difference – but if you don’t look for it first, you won’t see it until later!
