Hitting the trail with Leatherman In

November 2016, intrepid Zen team members Evan Blake and Simon Hammer joined up with some local adventurer bloggers for a journey into NSW's beautiful Blue Mountains.

Their goal - to see how many ways a Leatherman tool could be used to aid you on a weekend hiking trip.

Early on a Thursday morning the four young men started their way down into the Blue Mountains valleys with the essentials for an overnight camping

adventure on their backs and a bunch of Leathermans on their belts. Also with them - a long list of tasks from the social community that included some usual (removing a hot billy stove from a campfire) and unusual (brushing your teeth?!) suggestions they had to attempt.

the campfire started using only the Leatherman Signal's ferro rod and some tinder. At one point they even used the Leatherman pliers to remove a hungry leech from one of the guy's toes!

For Simon, who is visiting Australia from Germany on a six-month internship as our social-media coordinator, it was an excellent way to experience the Australian outdoors and also get some first-hand experience on the versatility of a Leatherman tool.

Before jumping headfirst onto Twitter or Facebook, ask yourself these important questions.

What channels are best for you and your business?

See how others operate on social media.

Firstly, what are your primary goals and how will they benefit your business: • • •

Do you want to create awareness for your business?

Do you want to achieve sales through the different social media platforms?

Do you want to educate people about the products you stock or about your unique selling points?

Secondly, how much time and money can you reasonably invest? One key factor of ensuring a successful social media presence is consistency - not only with your posting schedule but also with monitoring and your response times. Can you or an employee of yours dedicate enough time to ensure this happens?

Thirdly, who is your target audience? Are you a B2B business and want to reach other businesses or do you want to connect with the end consumer? Ask yourself "Who is my ideal customer?", then build three personas to have a better image of the audience you want to connect with. More important than what you publish through social media is where you publish it. Choose your channel(s) wisely - over the last ten years a lot of social media platforms have sprung up, the most well-known being Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter and Snapchat.

Once you've chosen your social media channels, you need to gain an understanding of the community you want to target. A great way to do this is to look at your competitors.

How do they communicate with their followers? What kind of posts do they share?

How often do they communicate?

Your answers to the questions in Step 1 should help you choose the right social media channel(s) to use. The following tables can help you make a decision:

Once you know what you want to achieve, ensure that it happens.

How to gain friends and influence people .

Track you progress and build on past success.

Set up a social media profile on your chosen channel(s), fill out every detail required and leave your unique footprint on this network.

The next step is to build a community. An easy way to build your social channel is to invest money in it. You could consider doing giveaways, targeted advertising (specific locations/consumers) or collaborations with popular social media sites. Also consider inviting family and friends to join your community and ask them to share your posts.

Another good method it to try to convince instore consumers to join your community, e.g giving special discounts if they join up to your channel.

The last step is to monitor the activity. Set yourself up a dashboard according to your goals and try to optimise your activities with this. If you publish a post that receives good engagement from your community, try to replicate or boost this result in follow up posts to reach out to more people. In time you will get a feeling for your community and your interaction.

After studying your competitors and coming up with your own social media strategy it's time to set goals for each network. These goals could be a the number of followers, number of weekly posts, or number of views.

One of the best approaches is to set goals using the S.M.A.R.T model.

SPECIFIC – target a specific area to work on.

MEASURABLE – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.

ASSIGNABLE – specify who will do it.

REALISTIC – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.

TIME – specify a date you want to see these goals achieved.

Once you've set your goals, be sure to stick to them! With your platforms chosen and your goals set it's time to launch!

A big thing to keep in mind when engaging your followers is to create trust and convenience, so answer questions from your followers quickly and politely, publish appropriate posts for your sector and keep up a steady flow of information. It's better to post once a day than five times in one day followed by nothing for a week.
