THIS YEAR BRINGS THE LAUNCH OF ZEN QUARTERLY, A MAGAZINE STYLE GUIDE TO PROVIDE MORE INSIGHT INTO OUR COMPANY, LEARN ABOUT GREAT NEW PRODUCTS AND SEE WHAT OUR TEAM HAS BEEN UP TO RECENTLY. WE HOPE YOU ENJOY IT! 2016 evaporated so quickly and when I stop to reflect on all we achieved in 12 months, it really is amazing. I have listed a few key standouts for the past year and for me personally, I have had a wonderful year watching my daughter grow up, develop a personality and recently reach the milestone of turning 1. Importantly we also were able to give back to the community through a variety of charitable causes.

It’s a huge undertaking and one that Leatherman has taken several years to prepare for. We’re sure you’re all excited by the new structure that will only result in more Leatherman sales. Leatherman also brought out a variety of new products including Rescue Skeletool, Orange Raptor, New Crater Knife models and we finished of the year with an amazing promotion for a lucky Leatherman consumer to Win a Trip to Lord Howe Island!

Lord Howe Island places itself on the map as one of the most spectacular destinations in the world; from subtropical forests and incredible scenery, to bleached-white beaches and

The lucky winners will enjoy an adventure filled week of hiking, snorkelling, kayaking and fishing, while enjoying fine dining and all the other comforts of Pinetrees Resort.

Hundreds of entries were received in the three months, and with the winner being drawn on the 13th January anticipation is going to be through the roof.

When the Kånken was launched in 1978 to prevent back problems for school children, it quickly became a common sight at pre-schools around Sweden. Made from durable, lightweight Vinylon F, the Kånken is an excellent choice for school, travel or work.

ZEN'S GUIDE TO BLADE SHARPENING Zen Imports carries a huge range of knives from world leading brands including Leatherman, Spyderco, Muela, Schrade and Tojiro. If you’re selling knives, it stands to reason you also supply sharpeners, which is why we carry the Smiths Abrasives range, from simple fixed angle pull-through sharpeners to sophisticated precision kits and benchstones.

Here’s a guide on how to sharpen and what style of sharpeners best suit the different types of blades in our range.

Sharpening Straight Blades The straight edge blade allows a smooth and clean cut. To begin, inspect your blade condition by holding the knife edge up and looking down the length of the blade.

1. Look for nicks or flats spots reflected by light. If the blade is nicked or extremely dull, you should start the sharpening process with a coarse abrasive material (i.e. carbide blades, coarse synthetic stone, coarse diamond stones, etc.) to remove inconsistencies in the blade edge and take it from very dull to sharp, but not finished.

2. After setting the new sharp edge on the blade, you should move to a medium or fine abrasive material for finishing.

3. If the blade is only somewhat dull or just in need of a touchup, start the sharpening process with a medium abrasive material (i.e. Soft Arkansas Stone, Medium Grit Diamonds, etc.) or fine abrasive material (i.e. Hard Arkansas Stone, Fine Diamond Stone, Ceramic, etc.) depending on how dull your blade is on the edge.

4. If you start with a medium grit abrasive, always finish the process with a fine abrasive material to smooth scratches from sharpening and remove any remaining burr.

Sharpening Serrations The serrated edge has notches or teeth like the cutting edge of a saw. In general, the serrated edge will work better for slicing cuts, especially through hard or tough surfaces, where the serrations tend to grab and bite (or pierce) through the surface quickly.

Serrated Edge blades require a tapered rod or triangular-shaped surface to sharpen. These unique shapes allow you to sharpen the whole cutting edge of the serration as well as the tips.

1. Normally, serrations have a grind on one side of the blade only. Sharpen the grind side only.

2. If you are NOT using a sharpener with fixed angles, Hold the sharpener at the angle that matches the original edge angle.

Fixed angle sharpeners eliminate this requirement.

3. If using a tapered rod style sharpener, put the pointed, narrow end of the sharpener up against the serration and stroke the sharpener into the serration - away from the edge of the blade, toward the spine. Stop stroking when the width of the taper sharpener gets to the same width as the serration (do not enlarge the width of the serration).

4. Rotate (spin) the sharpener as you go for even, consistent sharpening.

5. Check progress and continue until sharp.

NOTE: Sharpening serrations on a flat stone will only sharpen the tips of the serrations. Although not optimal, just sharpening the tips alone will improve results.

MANUAL SHARPENERS

FIXED ANGLE PULL THROUGH Great for quick, effective sharpening of straight blades; ensures the right angle every time.

ADJUSTABLE ANGLE PULL THROUGH These pull though models provide more control of the straight edge knife angle being sharpened, which is ideal for those who own knives manufactured from different countries, particularly Eastern & Western.

FLAT BENCHSTONES Requires skill or an angle guide to ensure correct angle; also good for sharpening small tools such as planes and chisels.

SHARPENING RODS & STEELS

PRECISION SYSTEMS

Steels are good for realigning the edge; ceramic and diamond rods will also hone the edge as it realigns.

Guided sharpening systems hold the knife blade at the correct angle to the sharpener and provide guaranteed results every time.

ABRASIVE MATERIALS

ARKANSAS STONES Arkansas stones are genuine silica “novaculite,” indigenous to Arkansas. They remove the least amount of metal while polishing your edge to razor sharpness; No other sharpener can perform both these tasks simultaneously. They are the best abrasive for honing and polishing an edge to razor sharpness and are known as “the world’s finest finishing stone.”

DIAMOND Fast, durable, and very effective. They are very aggressive and remove metal quickly. Excellent for use on very hard tools or stainless steel.

Diamond stones always remain flat, as opposed to Natural Arkansas and Synthetic stones which wear down with use, and will even sharpen carbides. They come in multiple grits.

SYNTHETIC STONES Man-made stone; great for quick edge setting as well as final finishing.

They also come in multiple grits, colours and shapes.

CERAMICS Remove very little metal; excellent for finishing and maintaining a sharp edge. Can come in different grits, colors, or shapes.

CARBIDES Very aggressive; removes metal quickly; great for quickly restoring a good working edge in 3 or 4 strokes.

Those who know me know I almost live to eat so this is hard but if I had to choose one food I guess it would be the coconut. In the Cook Islands where my mum is from they call the coconut the Fruit of Life. You can eat it, drink it, use its husks for fires, use the shells for bowls, use their leaves for plates and I’m sure there are many other uses. It’s actually not for these reasons…. I just love anything coconut!
