WELCOME TO THE ZEN QUARTERLY It seems crazy to think that we are almost to the end of 2021 already, with only a few months left until the Christmas holidays.

As our team begins to prepare for the peak end of year shopping, I can tell it will be another successful holiday season for the outdoor and lifestyle sectors. While most of our states are still experiencing lockdowns, there is light appearing at the end of the tunnel, with national vaccination rates rising at a rapid pace and planned dates for lockdowns to finally lift. We hope that everyone will be out for Christmas and planning domestic holiday trips with their families.

I hope this summer edition of the Zen Quarterly helps to inspire you for the upcoming sunny season. We have a lot to look forward to, including Christmas and welcoming the new year, so now is the time to plan your retail calendar!

We have plenty of new products still arriving at Zen every day, only increasing our amazing brand offerings and product opportunities for our retailers.

Our new product offering lends itself to the outdoor sector with some great gear from Klymit, new colours and patterns from Klean Kanteen and a whole new sustainable range of wearable sleeping bags from the team at Selk’bag.

I hope that with the forecasted opening of domestic travel these products will encourage more people to get out and about in nature and experience more of Australia this summer.

Many of our team are still operating from home as we prepare this latest edition of the Zen Quarterly, and I know a lot of our customers are also experiencing long term retail closures to adhere to mandated government regulations. KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND

Smarter Shipping Managing stock from warehouse to retailer

When COVID-19 hit, many businesses struggled with the new challenges of operating in lockdown and navigating an unexplored retail landscape. Zen however not only continued to supply to our customers consistently, but also grew our brand portfolios to offer greater choice to our retail partners.

Although some of our team was working remotely, Zen continued to operate at 100% capacity, staying committed to our businesses while navigating the Covid landscape with our loyal and new retailers across New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Asia.

In 2020 and 2021, e-commerce accelerated and with increasing orders our main objectives were keeping up with inventory demands, upholding customer service, processing and doing so while staying consistent and also introducing new products – which was made possible through continued investment and innovation courtesy of our warehouse management system.

Managing Director David Yates explains how Zen successfully keeps the flow of stock moving effectively from supplier to our warehouse to retailer.

What are some of the key features of the warehouse management system and how does this support operations across Zen’s departments and affiliates?

Zen is constantly evaluating our needs from a technology standpoint. It’s been one of the constant objectives for us as a company - to always be able to meet the rising demand for our products. Over the years we have gone through several system upgrades and installations to greatly improve efficiencies with logistics. Again in 2021, we deployed further innovation to our warehouse management system and have increased capacity, reduced manual intervention, reduced physical walking distance for our picking team and automated further parts of the system. We have thousands of clients, with many of them having very specific receiving guidelines. We are able to produce any desired requirement quickly and integrate with our partner's digital interfaces seamlessly.

One of the key advantages our customer can expect with our system is using ZenPort. With ZenPort being integrated completely with the warehouse infrastructure, orders can be raised faster and in most cases immediately. For example, if you use ZenPort the order goes straight through and doesn't require human interaction to be raised, which happens with PDF or email orders.

What were some of the day-to-day challenges you or the team faced when Covid hit, and what was introduced to overcome these hurdles while continuing to operate successfully?

Like all businesses across Australia we had to completely change our perspective. Overnight our dispatch areas were rebuilt and relocated to be safely spaced. We installed new rolling racks for parcel movements around the facility. Our entire team, currently at the point of writing, is being tested weekly to further reduce risk and lessen impacts caused by the pandemic.

How integral is communication amongst the team and other departments to ensure arriving inventory and shipping is done in line with customer expectations and minimal delay?

Communication is the most critical thing we have. It’s our best tool to manage demand and priorities and even more important with the majority of the team working remotely.

How have smart digital tools or new technical strategies helped keep operations consistent while continuing to expand?

Everything is in a live environment, so our team can see where any particular order is (in a queue on a device for scanning, in a carton for dispatch etc.). This transparency has enabled better communication improvements.

Others like fast moving stock placement, rotation of slower moving items and bulk picking locations have also reduced time lag. We've also just finished upgrading our picking devices with cameras to allow for further accuracy.

How have some technical issues been approached by the warehouse team while adapting to ongoing customer demand and how were these overcome?

Ultimately it comes down to communication between operations, warehouse and I.T. Recently we discovered WiFi dropouts in various areas due to high bay racking locations, so a new project has been created to test, relocate and enhance our WiFi connectivity for the picking crew.

During the Covid pandemic we were very cautious to not bring in too many new people to the team. It’s usually the first thing on the agenda when demand goes up - to bring in more manpower. However, because of Covid we have found other ways to manage demand. Batch picking, for example, is when we pick one item in bulk, then break it down to meet required individual orders. This is particularly useful with large retail chains doing repeat orders as we can pick them all at one time, rather than repeating the same process.

How do you foresee the role of smart technology, savvy operational systems and warehouse tools integrating with physical labour and in-person interaction as operations continue to adapt and evolve?

We’re always looking into how we can improve these processes. For example - moving into robotic picking still requires skilled workers to operate the infrastructure. This is a way humans and technology can advance together. Invest in upskilling etc. We’re seeing big gains in transport efficiencies and technology, so I would expect we see many improvements on that side too. As new technologies become more mainstream and affordable we'll certainly explore those.

What sets Zen’s warehouse operations apart from others?

One thing Zen has never shied away from is evolutionary change and embracing and investing in that. If we fail to invest and improve our business operations we can get complacent, leading to poor decisions and bloated operations. We’re committed to being as lean and efficient as possible, utilising the tools we have available.

Ultimately, our business depends on the success of our partners, and we’re very motivated to continue to evolve, enhance and improve our operations to give the same advantages to our customers.

Enliven Your Space

Put your best foot forward this holiday season by breathing new life into your visual merchandising

For most of us, this is also the only area in the store where we don’t need to worry as much about the accessibility of products for customers, making the window display the place where we can really let our creativity shine. A window display should be eye-catching, but easy to understand. What aesthetic suits your customers will change from store to store.

I’ve worked in bookshops where window displays are akin to elaborate sets from a stage play, and now at the Fjällräven store our aesthetic is clean and minimalist. These two approaches couldn’t be more different, but they are equally effective in telling the right narrative for the product – be it the promise of a literary escape to fictional world, or of sustainable and trustworthy Scandinavian design.

The past two years have been a rollercoaster for us all, but with vaccination rates on the rise and roadmaps to opening up being announced, it seems as if we can have high hopes for the upcoming holiday season. States that have been in lockdown can expect to meet with a wave of returning customers, relieved, no doubt, to be out and about in the world once more. And even for those areas who have been living relatively unrestricted lives, the promise of easing travel restrictions will be buoying hopes for families reunited for Christmas. With all this positive energy in the air, it’s the perfect time to build momentum for sales – and there’s no place better to start than with revitalising your store’s visual merchandising.

Visual merchandising is the passive salesperson in every shop – it entices customers to enter, guides them through the space and shows them the value of our products. It’s one of the most accessible and cost-effective ways of marketing your products, but that doesn’t mean it should be underestimated!

I know first-hand how easy it can be to become so used to your store’s layout and décor that you barely notice it anymore, but every customer who walks in is seeing it with fresh eyes. It’s so important to make sure, as we’re gearing up for the holiday season, that we’re welcoming our customers in with confidence and style.

Every customer’s journey begins with what they see from the outside, making window displays potentially the most important VM signpost. They should feature products that are familiar to the customer, so that they can instantly connect with what they are seeing, but they should also offer them products which are new and inspiring. This way, we remind customers that we are offering something which they know of and trust, but we are also trading on that trust to offer them new or less high-profile products that we are confident they will love just as much.

Once the customer sets foot in the store, a lot of the hard work is done – but the VM journey doesn’t end there. While the retail assistants are there to greet customers and connect with them socially, our in-store displays should be working just as hard to guide them through the store on a visual level.

Individual products should be easy to see and interact with, and they should make sense in the context of what they are surrounded with. Of course it makes life easy for those of us who work in store to be able to point to a single shelf and conclusively proclaim that that’s where all the beanies are – but the customer who has come in looking for a beanie is unlikely to buy more than one. In-store displays are our opportunity to sit different items together, building connections through adjacencies that help the customer to find more than the one product they were initially looking for.

The way that we treat our products as retailers signals to the customer how much value that product has. If we take the time to curate our in-store displays and to inspire passers-by with strong product narratives in our windows, then we are showing customers that we care about the positive impact these products can have on their lives – not just the monetary value of the transaction.

I, for one, can’t wait to get back into store and help whip our VM into shape. These long weeks in lockdown have made me really appreciate what I miss, and making sure that the store where I work is a welcoming place for customers to come and connect over our products is something I’m very much looking forward to.

A TALE OF REDISCOVERY

Lockdown Learnings What does a global adventurer do when they can’t adventure globally?

I write this whilst riding my bike... Literally. Dictation-tech is amazing! You see when this global pandemic thing took flight, I panic purchased like everybody else, but I missed the memo about dunny-rolls and ended up with a bike-trainer instead.

Now, more than a year later, with international airports still closed and my allowable daily ‘recreation quota’ maxed out, I figure smashing out stationary miles might help work off an accumulation of Uber-Eats and Pinot Noir induced Covid kilos.

My sudden need to sweat stems from a simple four-word text message from a mate of mine; “We could be on!” accompanied by a screen grab of Qantas’ international flight schedule. It refers to a 2020 pre-pandemic Greenland ski-mountaineering project we pulled the pin on only days before the world shut down, and a renewed hope that maybe it’ll open again soon.

Whilst my present ‘lockdown locks’ might make it look like I’ve just exited the Karakoram, the truth is I’ve hardly left home in over a year. My pre-pandemic life photographing adventurers around the globe came to a sudden halt when SARS-CoV-2 took a hold of the world. A life of international flights every other month and the next exotic location up my sleeve disappeared overnight.

Surprisingly however, lockdowns and health-orders sparked an unexpected side effect from my new localised world. A rediscovery of micro-adventures in my own backyard. Little did I know, I had only scratched the surface of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, a place I have called home for nearly two decades, and so when passport control shut up shop without a whisper of reopening, I enthusiastically launched into a new world of micro-adventures.

The transition wasn’t immediate. Like many, there were plenty of pizza and beer nights as I came to the realisation the freedom for international exploration, as I had known it, may never return. But it was my partner who suggested we go for a walk in the National Park, and then I suggested a kayak, and it all blew-up from there.

Soon we snuck in mini-sailing excursions with my yachtowning adventurous buddies. We discovered secluded beaches and hidden waterways of Broken Bay, West Head and Pittwater. The deep blue waters north of Sydney are a far cry from the tropical waters of the Cook Islands or wildness and isolation of Patagonia’s Magellan Straight, but often our sailing sojourns produced not a soul but us within coo-ee distance. We even took-off up the coast, travelling by wind only, glimpsing dolphins surf the bow wave, to then snorkel colourful reefs before catching dinner on a line and sleeping to the sound of waves lapping the hull. I stuck my head under the tender once, only to come face to face with a super-sized grey nurse shark... man did I levitate back into the tender in a flash.

When health orders kicked up a notch I transitioned to pedal power. My quads certainly felt ‘the-hurt’ caused by weeks of early pandemic blues, but I simultaneously rediscovered old mountain bike trails I hadn’t ridden in decades. Afternoon adventures delivered lung-busting climbs, adrenalin fuelled descents and glowing sunsets over sandstone escarpments with not a house in sight, all whilst only 20 minutes from the local café. I even dusted off the road bike to remind myself what true leg-burn felt like whilst watching my heart rate climb to the sky.... that was a stupid idea but fun all the same. On those long afternoon rides it dawned on me that I didn’t need to be in the Arctic to experience a sunset of solitude.

When East Coast lows collided with our rocky coastline, I turned a blind eye to the snow falling six hours away and instead donned a winter wetsuit to reinvigorate an all too absent passion for surfing. When the lows passed to leave gentle breeze and calm waters, I hauled out an ageing kayak.

The remote deserted beaches of Ku-ring-gai National Park became my destination and my girlfriend and I would skinny dip the calm waters of enclosed rocky bays before battling choppy headwinds home.

And I walked. Boy did I walk. I have never been ‘a walker’... I tend to scope the terrain and assess whether it can be ridden, driven, paddled or run instead. Don’t get me wrong, trekking is a different kettle of fish and in a past life I’ve found myself in the Peruvian Andes and Nepalese Himalayas, but who would have guessed... day walking is rad.

My better-half and I would grab a water bottle only, to head off for a two-hour walk/swim/walk combo. We’d don a daypack to explore a little further afield and bust down snaking trails to sandstone escarpments, cascading waterfalls and oyster strewn bays, all only 10km’s from my home.

My 13-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter joined me to plunge into icy swimming holes whilst Eastern Water Dragons casually lazed on sandstone shelves only metres away. We searched for geocaches, we found crabs and octopus, or lay on beaches of rock, sand or pebble and built shacks of driftwood and boulders, all the while noting Sea Eagles soaring overhead, or the cackle of a Kookaburra in the distance.

What I discovered in lockdown-land was a newfound respect for home. Whilst a four-worded message might have reignited embers for distant adventures, it also dawned on me that I don’t always need a plane ticket, trekking pack, or ice axe to revel in what mother nature provides.

Amongst all the bickering of politicians and authorities patrolling imaginary lines on the ground, we sometimes forget what we have in front of us: The sun, rain, bushland, waterways, parklands and beaches. Maybe for you it’s the warble of magpies, or first dusting of snow in the mountains.

Maybe it’s something different altogether.

For you, just like me, I hope Covid Chaos has been a wakeup.

If we open our eyes, we might just realise our next adventure doesn’t have to be a world away... maybe it’s only five minutes away. I suggest you go and look. You might just be surprised at what you find. Happy micro-adventuring.

Our customer service team is experiencing new challenges every day due to ever-changing issues and expectations that have fluctuated over the past two years. The goal of any customer service team is to create positive engagement.

Responding with helpful answers with or without prior knowledge of the customer and going above and beyond to help resolve any issue is the most rewarding part of the job.

Providing a positive customer experience and putting a smile on a face is what the Zen experience is all about.

Human connection has become paramount to the Zen team. We are there to provide every customer with personal correspondence and never a pre-recorded message to be deciphered, whether it be related to returns and warranties or checking product sizing. Customers can expect a greeting like “How is your day? How are you?” from a caring and empathetic service member dedicated to extending the best possible experience and interaction with every customer.

We continue to receive positive calls from people returning to the great outdoors again, as well as from newcomers to the scene. Receiving positive feedback from a customer regarding our service is always rewarding and appreciated. Our team love the feel-good vibes this feedback brings to the working day. It makes it all worth it.

Our highest goal at Zen has remained the same since day dot, which is to provide the best quality products and service to our customer base. We are always striving to identify and improve areas of concern while continuing to foster our strengths. Every call, email and query is valued. Ensuring a positive experience, no matter the question or reason, and going further than what the customer is expecting is key to achieving our goals.

Being physically separated has affected all aspects of the business and enforced change with our operations and interactions between departments. Despite the challenges, having a good portion of the company working from home has also created opportunities to re-evaluate the way we work.

There is always an opportunity to further develop and make positive changes internally.

As far as customer service is concerned, this has included optimising the layout structure of our internal product knowledge centre and revamping remote access to it, which allows our team to quickly access the right information and brand assets for our customers. We have also introduced productivity apps like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, which allow us to overcome communication barriers, share timely information, or catch up over a friendly chinwag. Checking in and seeing how our co-worker’s day is going is a wonderful way to boost morale and stay connected when we are apart.

We are all looking forward to the day when we can see each other again in person at Zen H.Q. But in the meantime we will continue our devotion to caring for each customer as an individual person and giving the best customer service experience possible.

The evidence is clear - with the rapidly increasing use of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services by both consumers and retailers, now is the perfect time to adopt these payment platforms into your online and real world retail spaces.

If you aren’t already, it’s time to get familiar with omnichannel strategy, to meet consumers where they shop whether on a traditional eCommerce site, via social media, in-person, or on other channels. A cohesive omnichannel strategy connects the proverbial dots between those channels, providing a seamless brand experience for shoppers.

The introduction and quick uptake by Australian consumers of Afterpay and other Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) platforms cannot be ignored and should be a huge consideration for all retailers to complement their omnichannel strategy. You may already offer these BNPL solutions to consumers via your e-commerce or retail locations, and there are many exciting developments happening with these platforms.

More shoppers are opting to ditch credit cards and adopt more flexible payment options that allow them to buy now, pay later. There are many advantages to introducing these platforms in your business and many options when it comes to choosing the platform that is right for your business, Afterpay, Zip Pay and Klarna are a small few that come to mind. Let’s look further into Afterpay as a case study.

If you aren’t offering the opportunity for Buy Now, Pay Later to your consumers, you could be missing out on a large portion of the market. When we look at the stats around Afterpay there are over 13M+ global users, 73% of which are millennials and Gen Z. This is a large section of the market that you could be missing out on.

Beyond the clear consumer preference for BNPL, merchants who integrate them into their omnichannel strategies can better understand their customers and thus build stronger connections via other avenues of their omnichannel approach.

For one, Afterpay gives retail partners a more comprehensive look at their customers’ spending habits, both in-store and online. That customer’s purchases - no matter where they’re made - are all connected to their Afterpay account. On the consumer side, shoppers can see all their purchases on the Afterpay app, as well as track and manage upcoming payments, keeping brands top-of-mind.

Beyond the benefits listed above, merchants offering Afterpay report that 30% or more of their Afterpay shoppers are new to their brand. They also report a 22% increase in cart conversion and average order value increases of up to 40%.

There are operational savings, as well: Afterpay shoppers make less returns, which equals higher monthly sales and less time and money spent on customer service or restocking.

Some retail experts call BNPL “the end of traditional credit cards,” and others note that BNPL is fast becoming the preferred way to pay among millennials. Further, nearly 90% of shoppers ages 22 to 44 are interested in monthly instalment plans. Beyond this growing usage among shoppers, BNPL platforms bring tangible benefits to merchants, including higher average order value (AOV), larger average cart sizes, increased rates of return shopping and more.

In saying that, Afterpay have recently announced the introduction of their new Afterpay Card, a contact-less Mastercard stored on your smartphone which allows customers to tap at any payment terminal in your store and shop with Afterpay. As these platforms evolve and change, consumer expectations will increase - something to consider for your future omnichannel strategy.

A chat with Tim and Ben from Leatherman Championing resilience, persistence and celebrating 38 years of preparedness, living legend Tim Leatherman has not only seen and experienced countless challenges and uncertainties, but has also overcome and conquered them all.

Over a year into the pandemic that threw the world upside down, Leatherman co-founder Tim Leatherman and CEO Ben Rivera spoke with us about Leatherman’s past, present and future.

The perfect storm

Without strong, solid and set foundations, whatever's added only creates further instability. With unyielding values as a testament to the Leatherman brand, consumers and retailers are able to know that whatever product they get, it will have the same foundations as the multi-tools of the past.

“Surprisingly well,” says Tim.“Last year in March when the pandemic hit, when the lockdowns occurred and when unemployment reached 20 or 25%, we thought that was it we will never sell another Leatherman tool. But surprisingly, last year was the third best year in our history. This year we're expecting to be the best in our history.”

“I came to realise that the values which we live by became increasingly relevant.” says Ben. “Whether it's our fair and ethical and caring treatment of people or the responsible way in which we manufacture our products and that they're done so close to home. It became a more important thing – the way that we treated our people and may be part of the reason that our productivity was so high.”

When Covid introduced its impacts and aftermath such as lockdowns, working remotely, supply chain lags and shutting down bricks and mortar stores, many businesses struggled to manoeuvre the new landscape – but not Leatherman.

“I think like most companies in March of 2020, we prepared for the worst. It felt like gloom and doom.” says Ben. “We made adjustments in our business and our expectations. We had expected it to be one of the worst years in the history of our company quite honestly, but we adapted as we learned.”

“Like most people, we have become used to change, and it's turned out that our products and our business philosophy actually became more relevant in 2020 rather than less relevant.” adds Ben. “We're responsibly made in the USA in our own factory. Our supply chain is always close by and our products are perfect for e-commerce. We've learned that when people are working from home and then keeping their sanity by engaging in outdoor activities, a Leatherman tool is more desired and more wanted than ever.”

Just like the USA, Leatherman also defied the crisis in Australia. With an amazing array of places to visit, local tourism bloomed. When travellers were heading into the outdoors, to make sure that they had the right equipment with them, they turned to keeping a Leatherman in their pocket.

“Leatherman is all about preparing people for the unexpected, helping people be self-sufficient – we’re used by people who are working in essential services and who are getting away.

People who are going on an adventure, getting out into the forest or to the beach.” says Ben.

The Leatherman Principles – foundation for success Overcoming the pandemic and staying strong as a market leader for 38 years, Leatherman’s success is not by chance or luck, but their commitment to upholding the Leatherman principles and values.

“Now that I'm getting older, eventually there will be a transition of ownership of the company to the next generation of Leathermans." Says Tim. "I've articulated what I call our four guiding principles, which are to always be the leading company in multi-tools, to make what we sell from our own factory here in Portland, to always be privately held in the Leatherman family and to be a great place to work for committed employees."

Owning the Leatherman story

When asked about how retailers need to evolve to stay ahead of trends and remain relevant, Tim believes that championing the Leatherman story and making it your own is one of the most important factors.

“I think we all know that the most influential person in the sale is the clerk that is talking to the customer.” Says Tim. “You need to train your clerks not only on the features and benefits of each tool, but even more importantly for them to be able to tell a little bit of the story of Leatherman – a little bit of the history of how I spent eight years in the garage developing the original tool, how I was so meticulous and persistent, and that the product philosophy that I adopted during that eight years of trying to create and put the most functions with the highest quality in the smallest space with the least weight - that those four product philosophies still endure to this day.”

“I had a very impactful experience. I was invited to come to one of the shops of a retail chain here in the US and talked to their employees before the store opened,” says Tim. “I came and t told my story and afterwards one of the employees came up and said, “Tim, you never said a word about any single product or any feature or benefit, but what you told us today is far more memorable than anything I've ever heard from anyone else that has ever come to talk to us.“ “I think when you’re the owner of a store, train your clerks to not only tell a little bit about the story of Leatherman, but also a Leatherman “Tool Tale” that the customer can really relate to, and that will make the sale even easier,” says Tim. This doesn't just apply to retailers – Ben credits the stories of Leatherman users as the biggest and most important driving force behind Leatherman’s success and their never-ending pursuit for improvement.

“We’re so lucky that the people who use our products are such fanatics of the brand. They are our strongest advocates.” says Ben. “At one time, the Leatherman reputation was built by word of mouth, literally by people talking to each other, and now there's so much built by word of mouth, with people trading information on platforms like YouTube and Facebook."

“Consumer luck isn't even the right word. We make such a great product that consumers are happy to share stories with one another, and people who view their videos can go onto YouTube and find literally thousands more videos, reviews and ideas for which product is the best, how to use that product and how it was used in somebody’s personal tool tale of a rescue.” continues Ben. “These are all things that have helped us not only build the brand before the Internet became so prevalent, but is also growing it today.”

“I really appreciate all the stories shared with us about how Leatherman tools have saved steps, saved the day or even saved a life,” says Ben, “And we look forward to hearing those stories, because they're very motivational for us to inform our product development, our employees and inspire them to always be pushing the envelope a little further.”

Appreciating whenever Leatherman users share their stories and the amount of credit given to Leatherman, Ben says he always feels a little guilty.“I always feel a little guilty for them, even saying that Leatherman saved the day because I feel like no, it was you guys who saved the day.” Says Ben. “I'm glad we got to be part of the story. So thank you.”

The Leatherman Future

In a constantly changing world, how will Leatherman stay relevant in future?

“I think the values will remain the same. I created the original tool to make my life a little bit easier and hope that it would make the lives of others a little easier too.” says Tim. “Product wise, that philosophy will continue, but I'm sure that the implements in the tool will change as technology evolves. I'm sure lifestyles are going to change. The technologies we use to make things, to fix the products we use - these will change and Leatherman tools will need to evolve to be useful for those technologies.”

“I think Leatherman has to become more relevant to a more diverse and a younger audience than maybe we do today.” adds Ben. “Because preparedness means different things to different people – people who live in cities, people who grew up with technology. Leatherman is going to have to adapt to those like Tim said. I think we can do so while maintaining the values of our company that have made us so successful this year, and that has earned us the admiration from the fans of the product and the brand.”

When asked if he could share any secrets or sneak peeks in regards to what we can look forward to from Leatherman in the future, this is what Ben has to say.

“Just make sure you keep an eye on Zen and the Leatherman homepage in the not too distant future. You might get to see some innovations coming out of Leatherman – and we're pushing the envelope a little further than we ever have before.”

Meet Genevieve and Simon from Mossy Store Situated in Moss Vale and home to local Australian homespuns and international handcrafted goods, Genevieve and Simon from Mossy Store share their retail tales with us in this quarter’s Talking Shop segment.

How it all started

Wanting to get away from the city, Genevieve and Simon made their move from Sydney to Moss Vale 8 years ago.

After restoring and settling in their new Moss Vale home, Simon started making joinery for their kitchen. As time went by, his creations expanded into the indoors and outdoors of the house.

“I think he was really digging it,” says Genevieve, “because one day I found 13 tables in our living room. Anyhow, I thought 022 | ZEN QUARTERLY

13 tables was a bit crazy, but then we had a light bulb moment maybe we should sell this furniture - because at that point all our friends and family had been well provided for.” continued Genevieve.

Both from a design background with a passion for sustainability, the two put their old skills to new use and decided to just give retail a go by themselves. While Simon continued his simple yet durable creations at his shed-turned-workshop at home, Genevieve supported by looking for people and sourcing things

that fit with and complemented his work. This little home that stored Simon’s designs soon attracted other makers that the couple were happy to support, and before too long, Mossy Store was born.

Longevity is not a dead end

There’s more in-store than online

In the face of the pandemic, Mossy Store made a move to go online earlier this year. “We realised we had to do that. Back in June when it (Covid) started to pick up again in Sydney, we were like "we better launch it now", and so we did that.”

Whether it’s Simon’s workshop creations or internationally sourced innovations, everything that lives in Mossy Store is guided by their ethos – heirlooms, not landfill. Focusing on lessening the impact on the environment, they are home to many items that are made to last.

“When it comes to picking what to put in the store, we always go for the best; go for the one we want; something that we will use around here, and whether it would work in this interior.” says Genevieve.“A lot of the things that we decided to put in store are wholeheartedly endorsed.”

With a heavy emphasis on sourcing eco-friendly and durable products, it would be easy to assume doing so puts retailers at a profit loss. So why the focus on retailing items that are made to last forever?

“Well that’s because we care about the planet,” says Simon.

“I mean, we’ve got children and grandchildren. Who’s not going to care about the future for them?”

“We used to think that’s a dead end, because they won’t come back and buy another one,” says Genevieve.“But they actually do – they come back and buy one for their friend’s birthday, or their brother in law, their kids, because they realise the inherent value in things and then we end up selling a lot! ”

But this doesn't mean Mossy Store is shifting their presence completely online. “The way I see the website, it’s to raise awareness that we are actually here and to get people to want to come down and have a look, have a walk in-store.” says Simon. “It’s also great for people who have been in the store that had something to buy to re-access it online.” adds Genevieve.

“We’ve got a beautiful shop, and a lot of people say it’s their favourite store.” says Simon.

So what is Mossy Store’s charm?

“A lot of the things that we sell, we can back up with stories about how we use them, how the company started or who the person is,” says Genevieve. “Pretty much anything in store is going to have a story about it, because it’s not generic.” says Simon. “It’s not just out of containers.” adds Genevieve.

Not only providing a temporary stop for local and international pieces, Mossy Store showcases the origins of the item – from little signs on the side detailing their backstories to learning it from conversations with Genevieve and Simon when they pick up an item.

“People really, really love that,” says Genevieve. “And that is a level of interaction that you get from being in-store that you can’t get from online shopping.”

Since their initial release almost a decade ago, the Leatherman Raptor has become an essential piece of kit for EMTs, first-responders, military medics and other workers who need to respond quickly in a medical emergency.

We gave Simone - an ambulance officer working in rural Victoria - an early sample of the Raptor Response to road-test and review for us: "I was already a big fan of the Raptor, having used the original for the last five years, so was pretty excited to give this new Response model a try!"

"The big difference with this new Raptor is the size. It's smaller, which makes it easier to carry around (I usually keep mine attached to a trouser pocket), however the shears are still the same size, so I was able cut through jeans, a leather motorcycle jacket and other types of cloth with just as much ease as my first Raptor."

The shears are able cut through tough materials, while micro-serrations on the inner blade keep fabrics from slipping and binding.

"The handles are comfortable and easy to grip, and it still gave me the same tools I used with the original Raptor like the ring cutter and oxygen tank wrench, so there wasn't any loss of functionality."

The new “Leaf Point” blade is available in three sizes, all with 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blades. The blade design is perfectly suited for EDC, in that it is less of a drop-point than the Flipper and more optimally suited for general everyday use. The blade angle, in being more downward, is also different to other models as being ideally suited to food preparation and even makes a great steak knife.

CHUNK CHAT Man’s best friend gives us a rundown of his favourite pet products from Nite Ize. >>> My mum started working at Zen before I was around, but since I came along she’s been bringing me home products to try.

I’m still a baby, but I know a good piece of kit when I see it, and Nite Ize knows how to make great products for my furry friends and me.

I’m still doing my best to learn how to be a good boy and get my treats, but sometimes I can’t ignore bad design,

even for a beef chew, and the harness they had me wearing was the worst!

Since we changed to the Nite Ize Rechargeable LED Collar I am zooming through the park. This light up collar is sturdy but comfortable, with a nice metal belt buckle closure so it’s easy to adjust.

This collar has a matching lead and when you turn them on it has to be seen to be believed! I am lit up like a Christmas tree!

That means other dogs can spot me from a mile away and cars too in case I run away.

These products are high-quality, with the added convenience of rechargeability and easy-push button operation. We've been using them for over four weeks and haven't run out of charge yet!

Not only that, whenever we have the lights turned on people ask where we got it, and Mum has to let them know where she works so they can get one too!

Now for my favourite, the GlowStreak Ball. It’s basically magic - when I throw it around the lights turn on. I was given this ball when I still had my puppy teeth and the rubbery texture was great for my teething. It’s even made with these cool ridges and shapes that make it easy for me to grip. I have a bit of a flat face, so I need help with extra grip and this ball has become my favourite. When the flashing lights come on I can’t stay away from this ball, and it’s great that it stays flashing so I can find it when it goes rolling under the furniture.

The GlowStreak ball takes batteries, but they will last for 24 hours’ worth of play time. We sometimes take it to Centennial Park, and if I drop it in the stream it floats back to the top so I can grab it again.

When we arrive at the dog park all the other dogs love to play with it, so I make sure we remember to bring it home with us, but just in case, Mum bought me another for back up.

I can’t wait to see what new products they come up with next!
