WELCOME BACK HELLO OCTOBER. STILL IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC, BUT NOW GETTING WARMER. I HAVE NO IDEA IF ANYONE READS THIS PART OF THE ZEN MAGAZINE, BUT WOULD BE HAPPY TO HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU DO (DAVID@ZENIMPORTS.COM.AU) AND GET SOME SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT MORE WE CAN DO TO HELP MAKE THIS MAGAZINE BETTER. It definitely feels like we’ve got a handle on the current business environment, although with a large degree of caution. We are still pushing forward to better the business operations, services and products.

This particular issue is hotly anticipated due to the release of the all-new Ledlenser P & H Series lights, which is the largest release in Ledlenser history. Not only did Ledlenser pioneer the LED revolution, they have continued to invest, evolve, improve and grow the lighting category globally. Inside, you will find the three categories of products specifically named Core, Work and Signature. These three categories will cover all functions the consumer is looking for and include incredible new technology developments from Ledlenser.

Throughout the COVID-19 times we’ve seen constant shuffling and changes to how brands are doing business. In some cases how they can improve business in Australia, which directly leads to the introduction of Rite in the Rain and Klymit. Rite in the Rain is the global leader in waterproof paper, with their HQ in one of the rainiest parts of the world - Tacoma, Washington, USA. Klymit - one of the leaders in inflatable camping and outdoor equipment - has been under-represented here in Australia and we’re very excited to take the brand where it rightfully belongs. We’ve continued to see immense interest in ZenStream, which gives quick and concise product information which can be shared with your team for training purposes. The feedback we’re getting is encouraging as we make the virtual shift to sales calls. “Thank you, I found the ZenStream a perfect way to learn about Rite in the Rain without impacting my time on the shop floor, thanks again!” - is one statement I was sent from our sales team.

We continue to be amazed at the impact that can be had when corporate businesses like Zen, meet and partner with impact enterprise. Social Foundry and Zen (Gold Partner) continue to work side by side in delivering impact that goes beyond business and helps to transform the lives of young Australians and communities.

As a social enterprise we work alongside young people with limited opportunities. We operate in two industry channels being Hospitality and Construction; providing work-skills training, and life skills mentoring. We have a goal to see community transformation across regional Australia through the lives of these young people. And, in the case of our mission and vision, hard times across our country and around the world only present far more need.

These hard times have touched us all. From devastating fires and significant youth budget cuts at a state and federal government level, to COVID-19 and widespread lockdowns for months here in Victoria - there has never been a time in living memory that we have faced such a challenge at social, economic and community levels. Social Foundry exists to grow community and impact the very lives of disadvantaged young people even amidst these hard times, so we’re committed to work through and continue in our impact pathway. As it is, every challenge brings opportunities, but we won’t lie - the wide-spread effect at a ground roots level is huge. 2020 has been a hard year!

‘Hard’ has no doubt been a word thrown around by many of us I’m sure. The pinch of 2020 has been felt at every level of our societies. For many of our trainees who are far more exposed to social and economic disadvantage, this has been a very

difficult season, but we have continued to remain open and remain focussed on pushing towards our mission and vision.

Even amidst adversity, it is very exciting to be considering sustainable growth pathways to widen our reach and ultimately increase our impact. However, as a not-for-profit we are held to a higher standard, so we are careful to scale with integrity, consultation and care. This scaling and growth wouldn’t even be possible however without the generous social impact partnership with Zen. The opportunity inside of impact partnership is huge.

To date our partnership has enabled us to fully launch our Constructive Trades channel to the market. What is Social Foundry Constructive Trades? In September 2018, the Victorian State Government pledged and launched the Social Procurement Framework which seeks to enable departments and agencies to deliver greater benefits from their procurement spend. The policy harnesses the Government’s buying power to increase the value of goods, services and construction by delivering social and sustainable outcomes that benefit all Victorians.

We are very excited to announce that Social Foundry is a finalist (to be awarded at the end of August 2020) in the Social Traders Awards, which recognises and celebrates leaders in social procurement – social enterprises, businesses and Government - here in Australia and is a prestigious achievement in the social impact space.

Initiatives like this simply wouldn’t be possible without Gold Partners like Zen who have continued their support of us even during these hard times. We were excited to partner in this good work providing social outcomes for disadvantaged and marginalised young Australians, so we launched our newest commercial channel - Social Foundry (SOFO) Constructive Trades.

SOFO Constructive Trades seeks to leverage Government Infrastructure projects, the Social Procurement framework and Commercial Construction Developments to provide projects that impart training in work-skills and life skills for disadvantaged young Australians. Our primary area of business is the design, construction and delivery of repurposed shipping containers to service the construction industry. Amongst other projects, and custom builds to any specification, we specialise in providing fully contained and site-secure site offices, first-aid rooms, server rooms and the like. If you can dream it, we’ll build it inside a shipping container.

Our Social Foundry Constructive Trades channel pulls together our values by offering young people belonging, purpose and respect, whilst providing them training in construction related work-skills: carpentry, electrical and plumbing. All this is tied together in our life-skills stream where we empower these young people to not only survive but to thrive in their working lives as they contribute to the wider community.

The innovative Flex Sealing Technology ensures that the electronic parts of the lamp head are completely sealed off to protect against the penetration of water and dust – and this is done while maintaining the Advanced Focus System. The focus can be used even if the light is briefly submerged up to a water depth of one metre.

By combining different LEDs and lenses, lamps with Fusion Beam have a unique, application-optimised illumination. REVIEW BUSHCRAFT SURVIVAL INSTRUCTOR GORDON DEDMAN SHARE HIS EXPERIENCES AND THOUGHTS ON THE RANGE OF DURABLE AND INNOVATIVE ALL-WEATHER WRITING PRODUCTS FROM RITE IN THE RAIN. When out on the trail navigating during a multi-day hike, leading a canoe expedition in inclement weather, or studying various forms of flora and fauna in a damp bushland environment, it’s important to have a reliable way of recording important information no matter the weather and conditions.

I regularly spend lengthy periods of time outdoors, either on a remote patrol with NORFORCE (Australian Army), teaching on my own bushcraft survival courses, taking notes in the field on plants, trees and natural navigation or being a student myself, studying under other survival and bushcraft instructors around the world.

Being able to record information and take notes when you need to navigate and plan routes or keep a personal journal is something that every serious outdoorsman needs to do, and in order to do that you need something to record that information on.

Regular notepads just aren't made for outdoor use. They rip and tear easily, can’t be written on in the rain and get wet and soggy. Your notepad or journal needs to be kept on your person, and even if you put your notepad in a zip lock bag water somehow seems to find its way in there, especially when you are active, turning your valuable notes into a mushy, unreadable mess. You need a notepad that is robust, durable, weatherproof and can be written on in the rain.

For anyone who needs to keep their written notes from being damaged by bad weather or wet conditions, I highly recommend you use Rite in the Rain.

Gordon Dedman is the founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia (BSA), an outdoor bushcraft survival school dedicated to teaching genuine and authentic modern and traditional outdoor living skills through carefully designed educational courses.

Gordon is a former member of the Australian Army 1st Commando Regiment and is presently a survival instructor in NORFORCE, an Australian Army Reserve Regional Force Surveillance Unit (RFSU). NORFORCE conducts patrols in the remote areas of Northern Australia, working closely with Aboriginal communities.

Gordon has trained at and completed numerous Survival and Bushcraft courses and certifications worldwide at schools run by Paul Kirtley, Ray Mears, Dave Canterbury, Lofty Wiseman and Bob Cooper. From the Source's Mouth TAKE A STEP INSIDE THE BRAND

Born in the backcountry of the Wasatch Mountains, Klymit has been challenging the conventional approach to outdoor gear since 2007. Based in Kaysville, Utah, their mission is to improve the outdoor sleeping experience, making it as comfortable as being in your own bed at home.

Klymit's team of engineers design and test all of their gear in the picturesque deserts and mountains of Utah to ensure everything is durable, high-quality, value driven and most importantly, comfortable.

Their range of sleeping pads cater for all types of outdoor adventure, from ultralight, compact designs for minimalist backcountry treks to insulated double-person pads for family camping trips.

Cory Tholl, President and CEO of Klymit, was kind enough to speak with us about the brand's origins, product development processes and more...

What can you tell us about the origins of the Klymit brand? How did the company get started?

While at university our founder had an idea to use Argon gas to insulate a jacket. After winning some business plan competitions he launched the company with the intent of offering Argon gas as an insulation.

Our intent was to become experts at Argon gas in inflatable jackets, gloves, boots, etc. To enable that technology we developed a very unique capability to design inflatable products. Just after we launched our inflatable vests we came up with a minimalistic camping pad concept that gained great traction.

Eventually we fully pivoted away from apparel and insulation and put our design capabilities and love of the outdoors to use in the inflatable sleeping pad market.

What’s your role at the company? What duties do you perform and what are the most challenging and favourite parts of your role?

I originally joined the founding team in 2008 to head up product development. In 2011 I became President and CEO. Through the years I’ve take on all responsibilities and many focuses but now we have great teams that 022 [ ZEN QUARTERLY ]

oversee Sales, Marketing, R&D, Operations and Finance.

I spend a fair amount of time on all aspects of the business as I like to be in the weeds as much as possible, providing vision and establishing processes and systems that will enable growth takes time and resources.

My first love is still in the research, development and design of products so I try to get involved there as much as possible. I also directly oversee international sales in Europe and Australia/NZ. I love the versatility my position offers but giving up ownership and empowering others to get the job done is easier said than done.

What separates Klymit from other sleeping pad brands on the market? What are they key benefits and selling points of your products?

I believe the foundation of our design approach is what makes us different and better. We really believe and invest into a design – build – test – fail – iterate methodology which, in the end, produces a better product. We invented a machine that allows us to design inflatable products on the computer and then weld them in-house to test concepts in a matter of hours.

Because of our approach our products are very comfortable, easy to use, reliable and cost effective.

Inflation products properly designed and manufactured are wonderful because they’re very lightweight and compact down tightly.

Our Static V line has grown tremendously over the years because we have models that are the ‘go to pad’ whether you are a first time camper or an elite backpacker. The V shape provides quick and easy inflation, support where you need it so you don’t touch the ground even when side sleeping, limited airflow and deep welds that increase warmth, and durable,reliable welds. Also, keep an eye open for the new Klymaloft pads. They will take the market by storm because of their unparalleled comfort.

Tell us about performance testing your products. What kind of stresses/tests do you put them through?

All of our pads and pillows are inflated for 24 hours at the factory. In the development phase and periodic production testing includes weight bearing loads that are applied over long durations to test impact load failures as well as how a weld will hold under pressure over long durations of time. We run our pads through thousands of roll cycles to assure fabric and welds meet our standards. In addition to these tests we like to get creative with extreme testing and yes, I’ll admit we’ve tied products to the back of a truck for a severe drag test.

As important as these lab and field tests are, nothing compares to the testing our beta teams put product through to get real feedback from first time users.

Social media and influencers play a big role in marketing these days. Who are some of your major influencers and how did you initiate a working relationship with them?

Our biggest influencers include Viktoria Haack, Ross Bernards, Jaclyn Tanemura, and Adam Combs to name a few. All of our best influencer working relationships have developed organically. Influencers have either reached out to our brand directly, or we reach out to them if we think they are a good fit for the brand. How would you suggest effectively marketing/selling the Static V/Pillow XL in-store? What are your store merchandising recommendations?

Successes at retail has been accomplished this year by the simplification of shelf presentation.

Focusing on high volume product, specifically the Static V and Pillow X Large, has helped to exceed sell through expectations for many retailers. A 4 piece PDQ has a minimal entry cost and allows retailers to sell our top 2 SKUs in an effective manner. It’s a great way to test the water and expand from there.

What’s the most interesting story/feedback you’ve received from a consumer about a Klymit sleeping pad.

One that comes to mind is this beast of a wilderness firefighter that had been using our Static V for years. He had over 300 nights sleeping on the pad fighting fires.

He brought the pad into our office and we couldn’t believe how filthy it was. He couldn’t stop talking about how much he loved the pad because he could inflate and deflate it so quickly and it helped him to get sleep in such critical situations. We gave him a new pad and had him sign his pad so we could put it on our wall of fame.

The pad still brings a nice smell of campfire to the office.

Because of the unique nature of our pad design, retailers that demo an inflated pad will find that customers naturally gravitate to the product and want to learn more. Nothing can compensate for touching, feeling, and laying on the product. In every new market we enter we find that a grassroots groundswell starts to build via word of mouth as customers use and discuss the product.

Your headquarters are based in Kaysville, Utah, just north of Salt Lake City and close to the Wasatch mountain range.

What do you love most about your local area and what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

All of our products are influenced by and tested in the Wasatch mountains. Within 45 minutes I can be from my home to hiking in the mountains, waterskiing on a lake, riding ATVs on some sand dunes, or skiing the slopes. The variety of outdoor activity in Utah inspires us to do what we do. As a husband and father of 5 kids most of my spare time is consumed with my kids sports, backpacking with the family and our family's favourite past-time is spending the day on the boat at the lake. WATER ACQUISITION AND PURIFICATION Gordon Dedman - founder of Bushcraft Survival Australia - shares his experience and advice on procuring and treating water in an outdoor environment...

n this issue we will be looking at the importance of water in an outdoor environment, water intake and dehydration, the five water contaminants and a few different methods of purifying it to make it safe to drink. We will also look at why having a metal container as part of your kit is so important.

Water Intake The rule of 3’s tells us that after first aid (3 minutes without air) and shelter (3 hours without shelter) the next priority for survival is water (3 days without water).

On average, the human body can only last for up to 3 days without water, however in hot and humid environments like northern Australia it can be much less!

In a temperate environment the human body will use up to 2-3 litres of water per day just in normal bodily functions (not doing anything) and 3-5 litres per day in a hotter climate.

If you were moderately active in a temperate environment you would need to drink 3-5 litres per day, and up to 10 litres in hotter climates. Your clothing and exertion levels will also affect your water requirements.

If you are low on water it is a common misconception that you need to sip your water in order to conserve it. This is NOT the case. If you only have a finite amount of water and you sip it over long periods, your vital organs including your brain will not get the water they require. The loss of just 2 litres of body fluid without replacing it will impair your ability to think clearly and perform simple tasks by as much as 25%.

Conserve your sweat, not your water. Do not sip water, drink it in 200-250ml amounts! The water is much more valuable in your body than in your water bottle!

Dehydration If you are reasonably hydrated, you should be producing at least 1 litre of clear to straw coloured urine per day. The more dehydrated you are, the darker the urine colour and the output less.

Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. By the time you are thirsty you are already dehydrated, so drink before you get thirsty. Other causes of dehydration include: the environment, moisture loss through perspiration and breathing (2-3 litres per day can be lost this way), vomiting and diarrhoea and failing to drink enough.

Signs and symptoms of Dehydration Thirst, headaches, dizziness, tingling in limbs, irritability, reduced urine and saliva output, dark urine, reduced good decision making, muscular aches and pains, nausea. If these symptoms are left unchecked, they can further deteriorate and lead to heat exhaustion then in turn to heat stroke which is a life-threatening condition.

Avoiding Dehydration Drink enough (200-250ml at a time), avoid extra strong diuretics such as espresso coffee (normal strength tea and coffee are OK in moderation), carry sufficient water and a means of purification, fill up when you wake up, have adequate salt in your food, take advantage of all good water sources.

Water Collection Methods There are various ways of collecting water, each requiring some form of receptacle or sponge to collect it or soak it up. These include various sized water bottles, containers and cups to collect water from obvious sources such as rivers, streams and water holes. Plastic sheets, garbage bags or tarps to collect runoff from rainwater and cloth or clothing to be stuck into hard to access holes or cracks to soak up water which in turn can be wrung out into a container. Cloth can also be used to collect early morning dew from vegetation and smooth surfaces.

If you don’t have a receptacle or method to soak water up you are going to have to find or produce something from nature, which requires some ingenuity and also can be quite time consuming.

Once you have collected your water, you now need to make it safe to drink. All water sources should be considered as polluted.

Input vs Output It is also important to note that when you are low on water you do not want to exert more energy and water loss through perspiration than you need to in order to obtain water.

Some methods of obtaining water, such as the “Solar or Desert Still” which is well documented in many survival books, is in my opinion is one of the most ineffective methods of obtaining water as you use up more water constructing the apparatus than you get back from it. [ ZEN QUARTERLY ] 077

The 5 Water Contaminants There are 5 contaminants that pollute water you need to know about in order to make your water safe to drink: Turbidity – cloudy, thick or muddy suspended particulate matter such as sand, mud, silt or other decomposing organic material. This must be removed first through filtering for all water purification methods to be able to work. Even if there are no pathogenic (disease causing) organisms in the water, turbid water can still irritate your stomach.

Parasites – are organisms that live in or on another organism. They can be either single cell organisms such as protozoa and cysts or multicellular organisms such as worms. Protozoa are free living organisms capable of motion that cause disease in humans and other animals. Eg. Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

Bacteria – much smaller than parasites, bacteria are a large group of single celled organisms that are widely distributed in the soil, water, in the air or in the tissues of plants and animals. Some bacteria cause disease while others don’t. The ones that do produce a wide range of infections, some of which are potentially lethal. Eg. Typhoid Fever.

Viruses – a virus is a sub-microscopic infectious agent (not a cell) that replicates only inside the living cells of an organism.

Smaller still than bacteria, viruses infect all types of life forms including animals, plants and other microorganisms.

E.g. Hepatitis A, Polio, travellers diarrhoea and viruses in the water from poor sanitation.

Chemical Pollutants – pesticides and heavy metals from man-made polluting sources such as mining and agriculture.

Filtration and Purification

Once you have collected your water you need to know how to filter it and purify it in order to make it safe for consumption. There are many methods and gadgets on the market that either filter or purify your water, and with some products both. Not all methods treat everything, some treat some pollutants but not others and vice versa, so you need to know what you are dealing with.

The main water treatment methods are: Coarse Filtration, Microfiltration, Chemical Sterilisation, Ultraviolet Sterilisation, Boiling and Activated Carbon.

Coarse Filtration/Pre-filtering Coarse filtration using a Milbank bag, bandanna or piece of thick cloth removes turbidity and sediment and is the first stage in treatment for all methods. Coarse filtration potentially reduces the load of pathogenic organisms if attached to dirt, particulates etc, however it does not filter out even the largest pathogenic organisms directly. Coarse filtration is needed to make water clear so that chemical methods work more efficiently.

Microfiltration Microfiltration using a ceramic filter, pump or gravity system removes larger pathogenic organisms such as protozoa without having to resort to heat. It is not as effective for smaller bacteria and viruses.

Chemical Sterilisation Chemical sterilisation methods such as chlorine, iodine and chlorine dioxide have various pro’s and con’s: Chlorine: pH sensitive, temperature sensitive, deactivates bacteria and viruses but needs clear water, does NOT kill protozoan cysts, inexpensive, no contraindications.

Iodine: works on turbid water, will kill most protozoa (not as effective on cryptosporidium) in addition to bacteria and viruses, limited shelf life, contraindications (don’t use longer than 28 days, don’t use if you have thyroid problems or are pregnant).

Chlorine Dioxide: somewhat sensitive to turbid water, kills ALL pathogenic organisms, unstable in solution and needs to be mixed prior to use as per instructions, needs to be used within allotted period of time, expensive.

Potassium Permanganate: Potassium permanganate (Condy's Crystals) is widely used in the chemical industry as a strong oxidizing agent and is also used as a medication for dermatitis, for cleaning wounds, general disinfection and treating water (used in wells to control iron bacteria and other biological growth). It also keeps well water's taste and smell under control). Place 4-5 crystals only per litre until the water is a very clear light pink, then wait 30 mins. PP is on the World Health Organisation Model List of Essential Medicines. Sensitive to temperature extremes, performs best between 10-22 degrees celsius. Poisonous and irritates the skin.

Ultraviolet (UV) Light Ultraviolet light devices (e.g. Steripen) can safely purify clear water and eliminate up to 99% of water born pathogens including protozoa, bacteria and viruses. Water must be filtered and clear for these methods to work.

Any electronic device is also subject to battery life and breakage in the field.

Activated Carbon Activated carbon filters are the only way of getting rid of most chemical pollutants in water. They remove pesticides, herbicides and many other toxic chemicals such as dioxin, benzene and styrene. AC does not remove all chemicals or smaller pathogenic organisms. Activated carbon also removes tannins and phenols which improves taste and smell. It also removes chlorine so use AC first!

Boiling Boiling water is the simplest and most reliable way of making water safe to drink. Boiling kills all pathogenic organisms but does not remove chemicals. A rolling boil for 1 minute at sea level is all that is needed to make water safe to drink. Water boils at a lower temperature the higher you go in elevation so boil for an extra minute for every 2000ft.

The only drawback of boiling is that it requires fuel and time.

Having a metal container and nesting cup as part of your kit so that you can boil water is essential. Klean Kanteen make a good variety of stainless steel water bottles. Get the single walled variety, not the insulated bottles or you will burn a hole in it. Another option is an army water bottle and metal cups canteen that fits onto the bottom.

If you don’t have a metal container, you will have to make a vessel in nature that can hold water and allow you to boil water using hot rocks (hot rock boiling).
