WELCOME TO THE ZEN QUARTERLY As I write this introduction to our 19th edition of the Zen Magazine, I do so from home as we are experiencing another lockdown for the state of NSW. Although 70% of the Zen team is working from home we are operating at 100% capacity, with our warehouse and warranty teams still in operation and our dedicated staff committed to servicing our loyal retailers Australia-wide.

Our main goal here at Zen is to provide top quality products and service to our customer base, both our retailers and the end consumer, and luckily the world has become very adaptable in these turbulent times.

The increase in spend on outdoor and recreational products was a trend that we saw during the last year and this trend is continuing well into 2021, so while we experience these short lockdowns we hope the industry continues to follow this positive trajectory.

Now that the consumer has their attention caught by the outdoor industry, there is a huge opportunity for all of us in this space to keep this momentum going through awareness of our great products and education on all of the possibilities that can be achieved in the outdoor space. Some of the strategies we have put in place for our brands include an increased presence on social media to keep our name front of mind while everyone is at home and on digital platforms.

We were expecting to be offering our customers the Katadyn range of water sterilisation products this quarter, however due to some last minute complications our distribution contract fell through. It's an unfortunate situation, but we're still looking at possible solutions and if things change we'll be sure to let you all know.

In this edition of the Zen Mag we hope to inspire you with some ideas around Father’s Day specials, the importance of Black Friday offers and a deep dive into the new brand campaign we have rolled out globally for Ledlenser PowerUp! AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM OPINEL The COVID-19 pandemic not only caused a global health crisis - it also created production slowdowns and material shortages worldwide.

This issue was most widely felt in the electronics industry with the semiconductor shortage, however other industries have been affected as well. Our recently acquired knife brand Opinel has seen their business touched by material shortages, which has been further compounded by an increase in

demand for their products. In light of this, they've sent the following statement to their international partners, which we've decided to pass on to you.

At the time of this magazine's release we still have plenty of Opinel stock available, however if you have any questions or concerns regarding Opinel, please contact your Zen sales representative.

Chambéry, June 10th 2021

Dear Partner, We are not looking for excuses. But we do owe you explanations. Yes, we are experienc ing severe delivery difficulties.

Following a drop in production as a result of last year’s first government lockdown, we did not have the data to predict such levels of sustained global demand for Opinel products.

The Opinel company took immediate actions in order to invest and increase our production capacities while following strict sanitary procedures. This has been very challenging as we are asking our staff to work extra hours; especially our workshops for grinding and assembling to work 7 days a week.

We made strong investments in order to improve our organization and production, especially into new machines and in priority for grinding. While our level of production is at its highest ever, this is still not enough to meet our standard service levels and delivery lead times. In spite of all our investmen ts, the positive effects shall occur in 2022.

So far, our production is still impacted by the following challenges:

- Shortage of components: all our subcontractors already announced much longer delays.

This is also including the supply of special components for our production machines.

- Saturated production tools of our own factory as well as those of our subcontractors.

Our order book for 2021 is currently exceeding our production capacities. Therefore, we will keep doing our best to supply our partners with as many products as possible while entertaining a fair and equal distribution.

For your information, we will not prioritize our direct networks (Opinel web shop, Brick & Mortar shop in Annecy, and our US sales branch). Additionally, we have instructed our sales teams to decline or postpone new prospects inquiries in order to focus on our existing partners. Some of those inquiries are potential key customers for Opinel!

We ask our partners, both distributors and retailers to understand this unprecedented situation.

This is a situation of FORCE MAJEURE further described as: “A Party does not hold liable to the other for any delay in performance or non-performance of that Party directly or indirectly caused by reason of force majeure including, but not limited to, industrial disputes, strike, lockouts, riots, mobs, fires, epidemics, pandemics, floods, or other natural disasters, …”

This situation creates a climate of uncertainty around the delivery of your orders. We fully understand this creates frustration for you and your customers.

Please rest assured that our entire staff is committed and mobilized to satisfy you as much

as possible.

CREATING AN ENDURING BRAND

A Light Evolution Ledlenser launches its new PowerUp brand In mid-April, Ledlenser unveiled their new "PowerUp" brand campaign to the global market. This launch was the result of a year's worth of brainstorming ideas, market research, planning, content creation and release strategy talks between Ledlenser H.Q. in Solingen, Germany and Ledlenser USA in Portland, Oregon.

Bobbie Parisi, Marketing Strategist for Ledlenser USA, spoke with us about launching this new campaign and it's importance for the future of the Ledlenser brand.

What were the driving forces/reasons behind this new PowerUp branding for Ledlenser?

Can you give us some insight into the new "PowerUp" branding and why you chose this as the new tagline?

Ledlenser has always been a pioneer in portable lighting since it began way back in 2000. Over the years they've developed bigger and better ways to deliver light - a prime example being the reflector lens behind our Advanced Focus System technology - and when it came to marketing, the focus had always been on our German engineering, unique technologies and superior features. We wanted to create a new brand message that not only spoke to the power and innovative qualities of our lights, but also connected with consumers in an emotional way.

There are three core values that Ledlenser stands for:

What were the key goals you wanted the new branding to achieve when you started planning?

We wanted our new tagline to embody these three core values, be simple yet memorable (e.g McDonalds "I'm loving it" or Nike "Just do it"), to work as a call to action, be consumer focused and also something that wouldn’t change (i.e. not a promotion campaign tag). After work-shopping a lot of potential taglines we unanimously arrived at "PowerUp". We create powerful and reliable products that empower our users to be prepared, to solve problems, feel secure and safe in the unknown or free to go further and explore. It's a really aspirational tagline we think will speak to consumers on a personal level.

There were a numbers of factors we had in mind at the start of our planning that we wanted the new branding to achieve: • • • • •

It had to differentiate Ledlenser from the competition, yet remain relevant with our target consumers Stay true to Ledlenser's core values Inspire commitment, passion and loyalty Have the ability to evolve as the market changed Withstand the test of time

How long did this initial planning take?

It was quite a long and involved process. Planning first began at the start of 2020 between USA and Germany, with the management and marketing teams from both offices deciding on the key goals and discussing different ideas.

It began with a full day meeting over Zoom with the German team, after which we went away and reviewed our notes for a week, then came back again for another full day of discussions.

These meetings went on for about two months, and at one point we had almost a thousand Post-It notes spread across several walls in our office!

We also had other Ledlenser dealers from around the world share their thoughts on the brand campaign, with Australia being a key Ledlenser partner involved in the planning.

What was the response from Ledlenser's global distribution network when you outlined the launch plan?

Once all the creative assets had been finalised and branding guidelines had been put in place we ran a number of global launch meetings with our worldwide distributors, and the response was really positive! All regions were happy to hear that we now had one singular direction moving forward, and this will align the Ledlenser brand around the world.

So now that the new campaign has launched , what feedback have you received from retailers and consumers?

This is an ongoing study, however feedback so far has been excellent, particularly from some of our large retail partners here in the USA such as REI and Home Depot. The campaign is continuing to build momentum, and we're expecting greater consumer engagement and brand recognition as time goes by.

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR STORES?

Hope for Retail During the COVID-19 pandemic

To say that the COVID-19 pandemic was a blow to store owners is a gross understatement. Australiawide we have seen countless retailers, who were already dealing with increased pressure from online sales and big box movers, buckle and fold under the rigid lockdowns imposed by government bodies in order to curb the spread of the virus.

By early June 2021 however, Australia was in a relatively good space COVID-wise, especially when compared to other parts of the world. Our freedom of movement locally was largely unrestricted, and Aussies were free to engage in retail therapy. Unfortunately, in late June the threat of a COVID pandemic reared its ugly head once again, and by early July Sydney was once again back in lockdown. We spoke with Fjällräven store manager James Porter on his experiences from the start of the pandemic until now and his hopes for the future of retail moving forward.

When I began writing this we were open for trade and business was building. Now, as I make these final edits it is from my armchair; the stores are closed and we are in lockdown once again. This uncertainty that has become familiar, these changes that we face blind, all of us closing our doors to one day reopen within a new atmosphere.

We were on our feet, our days in conversation with guests, perhaps without an awareness of what there was to lose.

While being held in place gives us the grace to feel the value of our daily efforts and their reward, and while it invites us with the need to nurture the bonds of our team by finding purpose in the support of one another, when the time finally comes to re-open our doors, it asks us to consider our effect. What will the human element of our landscape contribute? What values do we represent? And what will determine our success?

"The conversations were powerful and there was a genuine offering taking place; they had returned with an essence of kinship. Our stories had intertwined, and through that shared history, our brand now clearly spoke to them in a way that could not be quantified."

During the first lockdown our retail teams held regular Zoom calls, and though it was stilted and seemingly unnerving to begin with, they became a source of community and comfort for many of us. We spoke of frustrations, were thrilled to meet guest pets, talked about the television we were loving and we also took to making art.

Giving ourselves the time to create and share with one another, each week we would present a drawing of an animal that someone had nominated the week before. Becoming a welcome focus and an easy access to conversation, we came together through creativity. It was a valuable act of care and we will no doubt reintroduce the practice once again this time around.

The green light will arrive just as it answered that first lockdown when we were delicate yet thrilled to reconnect and socialise. We were eager to meet the reassurance of success and our teams performed with valour. Our regulars returned and the interactions were noticeably different.

The conversations were powerful and there was a genuine offering taking place; they had returned with an essence of kinship. Our stories had intertwined, and through that shared history, our brand now clearly spoke to them in a way that could not be quantified.

Along with our regulars came a fleet of folks that were new to us. People that had found us through a recently born or rekindled passion, actively tuning into nature in our instance.

These interactions were just as dynamic yet shaped in an entirely different way. You feel a call to explore, perhaps it's an overnight hike in your sights. Your passion builds and you learn the language. You find the right place and are welcomed by someone who speaks that same language and encourages your wonder. These are the exchanges that we have been granted.

If there was a belief that we can thrive in a self-serve environment, or a failure to see the nobility in service, we now know better. Through connection we carry our brand and we become a community, and the more that we allow ourselves to show up with heart as we meet with that shared passion, the more we will grow. Our success lies in relationships.

Every month should be plastic free in my view, but at Take 3 for the Sea we understand everyone is on an individual journey, so starting with Plastic Free July is a great way to both understand the problem and make a difference.

Plastic Free July is a simple but fantastic concept which we are proud to support. The campaign, which has been running since 2011, has helped millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution, directly leading to cleaner oceans and waterways.

At Take 3 we are championing this message each and every day, and believe education and action are key to making a real impact. Since the amazing Amanda Marechal, Roberta Dixon-Valk and Tim Silverwood formed the organisation in 2011 we have made significant steps, educating more than 500,000 young people, removing 30 million pieces

of rubbish and sparking a global movement of more than 150,000 people!

But that is just the start, and our goal by 2025 is to educate more than one million children and remove 50 million pieces of rubbish from our oceans and waterways. This ambition was recently showcased at our inaugural Youth Summit at the Taronga Institute of Science & Learning, where more than 150 young leaders from 25 schools around New South Wales were joined by selected celebrity guests and leaders in the field of conservation to discuss the problems of plastic pollution and potential solutions during two action-packed days. The event proved a huge success and that was in part due to the support of Klean Kanteen and Fjällräven who chose to come on board as official sponsors of the Youth Summit.

Both brands are passionate about the environment and sustainability, and are great examples for the young people and future leaders that attended the Youth Summit. We look forward to a long and productive partnership with both brands as we continue our journey to take action and educate, while also raising awareness of our global movement inspiring change.

But the ocean is so much more than just something we can all enjoy. It is the primary lifesource of our planet, it gives us our oxygen, our weather and drives our climate.

We need to have a healthy ocean for survival on our planet. Too often human beings think of ourselves as separate or above nature. We are inter-connected with all living things as part of the biosphere we call home.

So why do we need to do all this? Put simply, Take 3 exists because we have a plastic pollution crisis in our oceans. Our oceans are literally suffocating due to the plastic pollution and we have to do something about it.

The ocean is an extraordinary place and I don’t think I’ve met anyone who doesn’t love the ocean; whether they swim, surf, sail or just enjoy looking at it.

We need to rethink our role as co-inhabitants and stop thinking about the ocean as a commodity and to start thinking of it as a life force that needs protection.

"So what can we do? People often ask me; what can I do? What can one person do to make a difference? Is there any point if the situation is so dire?

My response is the mantra of Take 3 and the belief that there are simple actions to solve complex problems. The plastic pollution issue is a complex problem, but it can be solved. We can all take action. As individuals we can take three pieces of litter when we visit our local beach or waterway and reduce our reliance on plastic."

As communities we can come together and do beach clean ups and stand together to protect what we hold dearest. Even businesses can come together with Take 3 and join us on a journey to be more sustainable and change the culture within their business.

The only positive thing about the plastic pollution crisis is we can turn the tide. We can make a difference.

So this Plastic Free July you can take action and ditch that takeaway coffee cup, learn how and what to recycle, refuse single-use plastic or simply Take 3 for the Sea whenever you visit your local beach, park or waterway. Together we can be the difference we want to see in the world. Join our global movement today and refuse, reduce, re-use, repair and recycle!

IT'S TIME TO GO OUTSIDE

Camping done right

Adam Denison takes Klymit and Selk'bag into the wild Selk'bag Lite 6g - From indoor to outdoors, there are literally thousands of uses for the Selk'bag. The Selk’Bag Lite 6G is now my go-to sleeping bag for camping season. I have always wondered if the experience of sleeping in a Selk’Bag would really be all that different to a regular sleeping bag.

After having done it, I can attest that the Selk’bag is second to none, I had freedom of movement, but still felt plenty of ‘weight’ to help me feel comfortable and warm throughout the night.

I chose the Lite 6G over the Original as I feel the heat during the night and it worked perfectly, keeping me at the optimal temperature. My wife on the other hand prefers the Original

Selk’Bag as she likes a little more warmth when sleeping.

Being able to walk around the campsite post-dinner was my favourite part - sitting in a camp chair chatting with friends from the comfort of my Selk’bag was great. The removable booties are also a great feature, allowing me to wear my shoes while using the Selk’bag and head off on a night-time adventure searching for possums and wildlife with the kids.

I must admit, getting regular sleeping bags back into their sleeve is not my forté, but the Selk’bag was super simple for me to get packed up, which is bonus as the job of packing up camp the following morning usually lands at my feet.

Klymit Insulated Static V Lite - After using cheaper products in the past and waking up to a half deflated sleeping pad in the middle of the night, I was really keen to try out one of the new Klymit sleeping pads.

The insulated sleeping pad worked amazingly; It was in winter (June) when I went camping and I felt no cold coming through the sleeping pad at all. Even better, the pad was still filled with air when I woke up in the morning! By far the best sleep I've have had while camping.

I used Klymit's USB rechargeable pump (which fits into your pocket) to blow up the sleeping pad. It took around 20-25 seconds to completely fill up with air, which was super-fast.

The pump was also easy to recharge and lasts up to 60 minutes before needing to be recharged again.

Klymit use a “Static V” technology, which helps so much with support in the right areas of your body during the night and keeps you slightly more elevated off the ground, which really helps with comfort while sleeping.

Travelling with a family of four, space is always an issue, but the Klymit Insulated Sleeping pad packs super small (about 20cm long and 13cm wide), which created additional free space when packing for the trip. If you're planning on sleeping out in cold weather, an insulated Klymit pad is an absolute must.

Studies show that in the coming years Black Friday, which originally started as an American-based sales holiday, will become increasingly more important for retail in Australia, and is expected to eventually overtake Boxing Day sales.

The increased interest from the Australian consumer has fuelled the local retail market to get more involved in Black Friday (and Cyber Monday) offers, which has paid off in great dividends.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, sales increased in November 2019 by 0.9 per cent to a record 27.9 billion, more than double what had been expected by economists.

This number is only increasing and as retailers it is a very important day to capture the attention of your consumers.

As we still live in a relatively restricted world for bricks and mortar retail due to COVID-19, retailers can use this to their advantage by increasing their digital presence.

By hosting Black Friday deals online there is the opportunity for huge growth, not only in sales but also in consumer engagement and databases. Engagement and database growth is extremely important, as by having this information you can continue to target and speak to these consumers at other important touchpoints throughout the year. E-mail marketing is a low cost, highly effective strategy to convert prospects to customers and up-sell one time buyers into repeat, loyal consumers.

When we look at Black Friday data from 2019 (via Finder), there is a clear trend in spend by generation. We can see that the younger generations both Y and Z have a higher average spend, and these generations are very much engaged through digital channels. This trend can inform us on other ways we could speak to this consumer throughout the year and build engaged customer databases all year round.

Traditionally, Black Friday was an in-store event, with its counterpart Cyber Monday being the day where consumers could take advantage of sales online. Due to the increase in e-commerce sales around the world however, both events have ultimately merged into one. This gives the opportunity for a brand to be flexible across the whole weekend from Black Friday to Cyber Monday, and you have the opportunity to make it a sale event that works for you. Some brands even make the whole month of November a sale period, however a drawn out sale will likely not yield as impressive results. The opportunity to host storewide sales is always an option, however if you have a selection of products that are of particular interest to consumers it could be a time to target them with a focused sale. It's time to be strategic about your plans, take inventory of your stock, take note of sale trends and whip up a deal that consumers can’t say no to.

A key way to attract these generations is through social media. Although relatively new in the world, more than 40% of digital consumers use social media to research brands and products prior to purchasing. Investing in social media marketing and building your online presence is imperative.

Although you may be investing in Black Friday already, with increased consumer interest and digital spend on the rise it is time to double down on your planning this year.

Our Opinel Opinion Les Essentiels 50's S/S Kitchen Knife Set

Indispensable and inseparable from food preparation, knives are essential tools for good cooking.

While I do take the preparation of my meals seriously, owning a complete knife set is a bit too much for someone who lives by and cooks mostly for herself. I’m not too fussed with my tools to cook – I only own two knives that I bought from the dollar store when I moved out of home.

As long as they did what they were meant to do, it didn’t matter too much to me.

Only knowing that Opinel is a well-known French brand for knives, I was both excited and anxious when I found out I was reviewing their kitchen knife set – excited to see for myself what makes Opinel so loved and anxious whether they would live up to the hype.

So here it is: an honest review of the Opinel Les Essentiels Kitchen Knife Set from a kitchen-minimalist, first-time user.

Featuring three knives and a peeler decorated with a retroesque water resistant varnish, the Opinel Les Essentiels 50s S/S Kitchen Knife Set is designed to make daily cooking tasks much more efficient and enjoyable. And so they did.

I usually start off taking really good care of my tools, but as time goes by I get increasingly careless with them. So here comes one of my favourite attributes of the set – made with alloy steel with the addition of chromium, the knife blades are highly resistant to corrosion and wear, requiring no special maintenance!

With the 50's inspired varnish handles adding much more colour and character than my dollar store knives ever did, it’s time for how the set measured up practicality-wise.

Paring knife A 10cm plain blade, I found it most useful when halving and slicing up avocado, and creating thin shavings off my block of parmesan (being a kitchen-minimalist, I don’t own a cheese grater).

Serrated knife This knife’s serrated edge made cutting anything with a soft centre a lot easier – boiled eggs, tomatoes, zucchini and broccolini. Goodbye ugly squashed cherry tomatoes!

Vegetable Knife A curved bird’s beak blade with a serrated scrape opposite the cutting edge, the vegetable knife was perfect for trimming brussel sprouts and removing blemishes from potatoes.

Peeler An old fashioned peeler, I found myself struggling at the start with it (mostly due to my inexperience with this type of peeler), but after a few tries I was peeling the skin off my sweet potatoes and carrots at the speed of light.

Final Thoughts Although I was initially worried about how I was going to put all the knives to use, it eventually became a no-brainer – I found myself now reaching out for the tools without a second thought.

Lightweight, sharp and fitting perfectly in my hand, every tool was practical and has now found a permanent spot in my kitchen. Darren Rub shares some Tentworld stories As you've probably noticed by now, we've given our Zen Quarterly magazine a whole new look this issue. On top of this re-design, we've come up with some new articles we're hoping to make regular features, starting with Talking Shop, where we interview a staff member from one of our retailers.

What do you love about your job?

In my previous employment I worked in auto parts, and I found that customers were always angry or upset as their vehicles were damaged or had failed. Working in the camping industry has allowed me to work with customers heading on holidays, where everyone is happy as they are planning that great Aussie adventure. Now my job is to help customers make their camping trip memorable, and then I have the joy of them returning to the store with the memories of a great holiday and planning to go again. Hearing their holiday stories makes the job rewarding.

What have you noticed during the last year about retail that has surprised you?

The huge number of new campers out there giving it a go. Given the lock downs and restrictions to travel, many Australians are now traveling around our great country, which is great to see.

The outdoor industry has been one to thrive during COVID, why do you think that is?

There are not that many other holiday options out there and camping is an easily affordable option. Camping can be as simple as you want to make it; a tent and a mattress will do, or can go right up to a great glamping setup. The options are limitless and it all comes down to you.

What makes a good salesperson in your eyes?

Listening is key. Where is the customer going? What will suit that location? Not every product is right for every location. Offer suggestions and give customers ideas on things they have not even thought about. I like to imagine myself there and explain how I would set up and what I do when I'm out.

Small lights, Big power. The new range of K-series rechargeable keychain lights improve on every aspect of the original K4R, with higher brightness, easier recharging and added features. There are three models in the new range - the updated K4R, the K6R and the K6R Safety.

The updated K4R shines with up to 120 lumens of light output, making it significantly brighter than its predecessor, as well as brighter than most smartphone flashlight functions.
