At Zen, for a few years, we’ve been developing out our business plan to manage territories outside Australia and New Zealand. We opened our New Zealand company several years ago and in 2021 opened the doors to our first Asian venture, based in Singapore.

As brands and their global distribution changes, so must we all. The title of one of my favourite books, “What got you there, won’t take you there” illustrates it perfectly. We must be constantly evolving and adapting to the changes going on around us. Be that opening a website for your store, a social media channel, a podcast, new creative advertising. It is clear that if we stay stagnant, we will drown.

Our commitment to you is we have put massive orders in with our major brands to secure the most inventory possible, so you are able to provide your consumers the items they want. While much of that inventory is impeded or not yet here, our planning for 2nd half and beyond indicates a healthy supply of stock.

Vision into 2030 Our roadmap for the future of Zen in the Asia Pacific region

Zen Managing Director David Yates discusses our plans for expansion into APAC, bringing new and exciting brands to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and beyond.

At Zen we’re constantly forward thinking and because of this we have seen significant growth, within our team, the brands we manage, and our operations. Many of our loyal customers have been dealing with Zen for many years, and we are excited to take you into the future of the business with us.

Over the last few years, we have introduced a range of different initiatives to bring our business into the future including this magazine you are currently reading, ZenStream and our digital ordering platform ZenPort. Into the future we will be developing new ideas across continents and markets.

At Zen we think of ourselves as more than just distribution and fulfilment, we are a brand management hub for the Asia-Pacific region, creating solutions for big brands looking to grow through distribution, sales, and marketing. We develop consumer demand through our extensive wholesale and distribution network, working closely with all channels to deliver solution and values for consumers.

The core of the Zen business has always been simple and is centralised around three core pillars: people, process, and products. This will remain true. It’s these pillars that have empowered Zen over many years to grow into what it is today.

At Zen we have a saying, and that is 2022 is the year of inventory. With delays along the supply chain from material sourcing all the way to shipping, we have seen huge delays in our supply, but we have committed to combating these delays as best as possible.

This year we have invested heavily into inventory to make sure we have the stock to supply our retailers. This investment has been high, but making sure our stock is available and on the retail floor is of utmost priority, as you may have guessed it's those with inventory who will win. To combat limited supply we have bought into additional lines and bought deep into accessories with the hope that this will give retailers more options to fill any gap on the shelf.

Facilitating trade, allowing businesses to connect with one another across borders and creating interdependencies internationally, supply chains are the conduits for businesses.

Once allowing brands to extend their reach globally in order to maximise production and profits, this convenience has now become a weakness – we are in challenging times. With world events causing delays in shipping, factories being shut down and productions ceased, a lot of businesses are starting to find their shelves and inventory empty, and many products out of stock.

Going out of stock might not seem like a big problem, “we’re just making less sales until stock comes back, we are not losing too much revenue!”, a study by IHL Group found that going out of stock costs vendors $984 billion per year globally. and the damage does not stop there – from failure to engage with consumers, dissatisfied customers, increased operational costs to a drop in customer loyalty and damage to brand reputation, going out of stock is more than just losing a couple of sales.

With an understanding of how damaging being understocked can be for businesses, we at Zen have taken a top-level planning and logistics investment in our buying to ensure inventory for our channels and retailers.

Believing that being prepared with exceeding numbers of stock is better than empty shelves and being understocked, National Brand Manager Carlos Carneiro explains Zen’s inventory management philosophy and strategy with us.

“To put it simply, our strategy was that we bought a lot of stock.” says Carlos. “Making predictions on trends from the past few years, we believe that there will be a shortage of inventory and the current uncertainty on production in China will impact retail in Australia,” says Carlos.

“China has continuously shut down major production regions as it attempts to shut out COVID. Retailers need to take this into account and make sure they have adequate stock on hand so as to not have a situation where they are waiting on stock, with their shelves empty or online store being out of stock.

By planning ahead, we have stock readily available for our vendors, and are able to minimise freight and logistics issues.”

However, empty inventories and going out of stock are not the only reasons why retailers should stock up now, as Carlos continues.

“Because of current world events, there is huge economic pressure which will cause an inflation rise and prices will go up. What we’re hearing from suppliers is that there might be a mid-year price increase.” says Carlos. “If you don’t order now, the prices will go up and that will lead to more pressure. If you have cash flow now, put yourself in the best position to have stock now and not have to pay more later. This way when it comes to key selling periods, you won’t have to worry about missed opportunities as the consumer will continue to buy.” says Carlos.

“If you have nothing now, the global issues that you have no control over are just going to affect you.”

“We are not waiting for orders from our stockists,” continues Carlos. “Get ahead of the game, plan stock, plan sales and maximise your ability to stock up now – we are ahead of the game and we believe you should be too.”

Safer Hands-Free A look at the range of Steelie in-car phone mounting systems from Nite Ize

Over the last 25 or so years, the piece of technology that has probably seen the most evolution is the mobile phone. What was once a simple device that only made phone calls and sent texts is now an extraordinarily powerful computer that fits in the palm of your hand. It can be used as a television, jukebox, gaming system, GPS device and connection to friends, family, colleagues and business partners. For most people in the developed world, it is an essential EDC piece of tech that needs to be readily accessible at all times, however, being able to easily access and control your phone while driving can still prove to be a tricky proposition.

Road rules for mobile phone use are not the same in every Australian State and Territory. One key law they all share is that a driver may only use the phone to make or receive a phone call (other than a text message, video message, email or similar communication which is not allowed) if the body of the phone is secured in a mounting affixed to the vehicle while being used. A number of states have even introduced mobile phone detection cameras to catch drivers flaunting the rules, with heavy fines and loss of licence points given to law breakers.

For these reasons alone, a Steelie system from Nite Ize is a great addition to any vehicle. Later models include the Steelie Plus range, which provided a stronger magnetic connection for larger devices; the Orbiter system, which swapped the magnetic phone socket on the back of the phone for a low-profile metal plate; the Orbiter Plus system for Apple MagSafe iPhones; the FreeMount system, which utilises a bracket with magnetic socket to hold the phone and connect to the ball mount, and the Steelie

Squeeze range, which uses a bracket with spring-loaded clamp arms to hold the phone.

Nite Ize is set to expand their range of phone mounting system even further this quarter with the arrival of the new Squeeze Universal range. The range works exactly like the Steelie Squeeze range, except it does away with the magnetic component. The phone is attached to a bracket with strong, spring-loaded clamp arms and a ball socket on the back. The bracket then attaches to a ball mount located on the vehicle’s dash or air-vent. Like the Steelie systems, the Squeeze Universal range provides smooth tilting and rotation of the phone, while the easy-to-use Squeeze arms allow quick and easy attachment and detachment of the phone.

Amidst the COVID-19 precautions in recent years, we’ve seen a dramatic shift in terms of customer and brand exchange; we’ve all had to adapt by the times and by each other. COVID has changed how we communicate: from in-person to across screens, it’s only natural for people to navigate their way back to that.

At Zen and for many businesses, it has been a trying few years, but we move forward – trusting ourselves, our standards and our customers to continue the journey with us. We will not compromise how the consumers reach us. We will be there.

In-store experiences have changed and while foot traffic is experienced in precautionary tones now, lest we forget the driving matter – people miss people; they miss a connection deeper than one that is through a screen. While almost all product information is available online, we still find that sales conversion is ultimately on us, our brand culture and in-store experience. Thanks to global convergence, we often find that similar products or copies are being sold and so, conversion and differentiation lies in the experience that your brand offers.

Maximising sales through consistent and personalised email campaigns. Statista prompts that 49% of consumers are happy to receive promotional emails from the brands they love on a weekly basis. Drive income through in-store experience and human connection. In recent years, we have continuously adapted, and customer experience has been at the forefront of our changes. From face-to-face, to digital then to face-to-mask – it’s been different. Ensure your business is following the recommended social distancing policy and that your customers feel safe – keep in mind that people still connect best with people vis-à-vis. Starting from a simple "Hello" and asking about their day: people appreciate the company, and it speaks greatly for brand representation in these socially distanced times.

Brand authority

Build trust and brand authority with your target market.

Product quality is no longer the sole factor of purchase consideration, it includes brand vision and value. In an age of direct access to information comparison to competitors, conversion is left to brand trust. There’s a direct correlation between customer's trust of you and their willingness to spend on your brand. More than just sales, it’s about whether they can see themselves as part of your brand journey and cycle.

Utilising the digital scape

Understand, utilise and maximise digital and social modern approaches. Less doorknocking and more liking, following and sharing. It’s connection for the new age and we need to keep up with its instantaneous and dynamic nature. The reach is vast, connecting you to your micro, meso and macro customers at the click of a button and tap of a phone. Being present on these platforms and using them properly can be the stepping stones of brand authority and maximum sales opportunity.

Sometimes keeping it simple and real does the job. The new shift in consumer movement is all about personability and trust in your brand values. By staying authentic and in tune with your customers, you’ll be able to confidently own the sales floor and boost your sales revenue.

After a chaotic couple of years, it looks like we can get ready to pack our bags and book a flight to the Land of the Long White Cloud once more! From the middle of April 2022, fully vaccinated Australian citizens and permanent residents will be able to enter New Zealand without needing to self-isolate or go into quarantine.

Zen is an ever evolving business, and New Zealand plays a major role in our vision of becoming one of the premium APAC solution providers for prestige and lifestyle brands. We already have retail partners established and boots on the ground in the form of our Country Manager, Guy Richardson. Despite the challenges of the last two years, Guy has still been able to achieve great wins with brands such as Fjällräven, Nite Ize, Rite in the Rain and many others.

So how have the last two years impacted hospitality and outdoor retail markets in NZ, and how important is the reopening of the NZ travel bubble? Guy shares his learnings and experiences from the past two years and expectations for the future of Zen in New Zealand.

So how did Zen NZ and our brands fare during this time?

According to Guy, there were both expected and unexpected results that sprung from the lockdown. “We saw a slowdown in sales within key outdoor destinations such as Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wanaka, which was pretty much a guarantee but definitely wasn't as large as I expected it to be. This was probably in part due to the government and Tourism New Zealand’s “Try Something New” campaign, which urged locals to go out and experience all the wondrous destinations our country has to offer.” said Guy. “The rise in domestic tourism on the back of this campaign was a huge boon to hospitality and outdoor retail, and helped to mitigate the lack of international visitors. Areas we saw growth were with hardware retailers and dozens of SME businesses, as home DIY and hobbies really took off while people were locked down at home.”

“When COVID first hit, everyone was locked down at home and the country became a ghost town.” recalls Guy. “Businesses closed across the country, apart from essential services. Worst hit were the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are such an important part of our economy. Humble Beginnings

Carrying over 30 years of experience, knowledge and insights in the hunting and outdoor industry, Marc identified a gap in the South African market – a demand for affordable but quality, functional and sturdy everyday carry knives. Marc quickly took on the challenge and got to work.

In a mere one and a half years, the first Honey Badger models were born: the Claw, Hook and Flipper, all featured in three different sizes. Making their debut at the HuntEx expo in Johannesburg, South Africa in April 2016, Honey Badger has since grown to become more than just a passion project, but a brand loved and trusted around the world.

Marc originally designed Honey Badger Knives primarily for the South African market and cash-strapped SA consumers with a terrible exchange rate (1 US $ = 15 SA Rand).

“We strove to create well designed, easy to use and affordable one-handed knives in proven steels and handle materials,” says Marc, “And while these knives succeeded almost instantly in SA, what really surprised us was how very quickly they also succeeded in other international markets such as North America.”

2022 marks the fifth year since Honey Badger first entered the EDC market and their popularity has grown each year, with almost no signs of slowing down.

“Our sales were up quite massively in previous years, so we optimistically budgeted for a 20% increase in 2021. However, our growth for the year ending Feb 28th 2022 was an amazing 86% up on the previous year.” says Marc.

Home to a great range of knives with superb value, service and availability of sizes, Marc attributes Honey Badger’s success in recent years to answering the market’s demands.

“I believe all knife sales were at least slightly upward,” says Marc. “With COVID, kitchen knives in particular went up greatly in global sales, as many people cooked at home more.

A lot of people also turned to camping and new hobbies in their leisure time, so outdoor knife usage also went up.”

When it comes to product development, Honey Badger Knives is always watching and listening to the market.

“There is a market for knives made from exquisite and high tech materials, and we also see that consumers everywhere are highly focused on quality knives that represent very good value for money. Despite zero failures or breakages with our handles, both consumers and peers ask when we will release knives with machined G10 slabs.”

"Accordingly, we are now also releasing seven different coloured machined G10 handles (Black, Jade, Blue, Green, White, Pink and Camo) in three different sizes (Small, Medium & Large). As our knives can be fully disassembled, these G10 handles will be primarily offered as accessory items for dealers or users to self-fit. Buy the model and size of choice in one of six FRN colours, and customise it in G10 if desired."

Just like the mammal, Honey Badger Knives are predators – always observing, adapting, and on the prowl for their next opportunity.

Bridging the gap and taking it further, Honey Badger prides themselves in their perfect blend of quality, functionality and fun at competitive prices.

“Our core concepts were in focusing efforts on superb FRN handle design in three different sizes and a very good ball bearing flipper action.” says Marc. “While light and of slim width, our knives are incredibly tough and resilient, hold very impressive blade lengths relative to their size and weight, and feature an incredibly smooth almost frictionless opening and closing action. Very few knives ever achieve such an immaculate action.”

Despite a faultless track record and performance in their initial handle designs, Honey Badger has just redone all the tooling for new handle moulds in three sizes and six colours.

“We were asked, 'Why change something that worked perfectly and has never had any criticism?'” says Marc. “The simple answer is: Over five years, we had learnt enough to know how to do better, like slightly smaller honey-combs for better grip and a few minor cosmetic changes. We are simply striving for handle perfection going forward.”
