WELCOME TO 2022 I am writing this from Portland Oregon in the US, on my first business trip to the States since the pandemic began back in 2020.

Being overseas is a surreal but fantastic experience following the last two years we have had, and I am grateful that I'm able to experience overseas travel again!

We are here for some key meetings with brand founders and teams we have been working with for the last two years but have yet had the opportunity to meet in person! While our relationships with our brands have thrived during the last two years, there is no real match to meeting in person and soaking up the vision and mission from the people who created these amazing products - it is truly an invaluable experience.

As we say goodbye to the year that was 2021, I had some time to reflect on milestones we hit as a business. We saw the introduction of new brands to our Zen brand stable and launched countless new products to our catalogue!

2021 brought many unexpected twists and turns, but we have come out the other end stronger than ever.

We started off this year with some changes to our pricing structure across the board for most of our brands, with these changes being on the cards for some time now. MAKING A CHANGE

A Kleaner tomorrow Klean Kanteen is switching to certified 90% post-consumer recycled 18/8 stainless steel!

Klean Kanteen, a family and employee-owned leader in sustainable drinkware and food solutions, is pleased to announce it will make its products with certified 90% post-consumer recycled 18/8 stainless steel starting in 2022.

Founded in 2004 to reduce consumer dependence on single use plastic water bottles, Klean Kanteen has a long track record of environmental stewardship. Klean Kanteen is Climate Neutral Certified, a long-standing Certified B-Corporation, and a 1% For the Planet Member that has donated $3.3 million and counting to organisations dedicated to protecting the environment.

In addition, by remaining a family and employee-owned company, Klean has had the freedom to challenge the status quo and stay true to its principles through innovative solutions.

For example, in 2018, Klean Kanteen unveiled Klean Coat, a safe, chip-resistant, durable powder coat finish responsibly developed with environmental and consumer safety at the core — something that did not previously exist.

Now, by using certified recycled steel instead of virgin steel, Klean Kanteen is extending the life of raw materials and reducing Klean Kanteen’s environmental impact. The switch will result in a 40% reduction in Klean Kanteen’s steel greenhouse gas emissions, a 30% reduction in energy demand, and a 60-80% reduction in ecosystem impacts.

to evaluate the environmental impact of our products, to installing high-efficiency solar panels at our corporate office and purchasing carbon offsets and renewable energy credits, we’ve proven it’s possible to use business as a force for good.

Evolving to use recycled steel was the most impactful next step we could take, and we’re thrilled to partner with Intertek to certify our recycled stainless steel – it wasn’t easy, but the results are worth it.”

Intertek is a third-party quality assurance certifier that will ensure Klean Kanteen maintains above industry safety and quality standards and delivers on its Strong-As-Steel™ guarantee. The Intertek seal will be on all packaging, and a "90% Recycled Steel" icon will be prominently displayed on packaging as well as engraved on each Klean Kanteen product made with certified recycled stainless steel.

Klean Kanteen products made with certified recycled stainless steel will roll out in a phased launch online and in-store. Starting in Autumn 2022, Klean Kanteen will begin manufacturing its TKWide and Straw lines using certified recycled stainless steel. In Winter 2022, the Classic and Vacuum Insulated Classic collections will make the switch.

By 2023, 95% of Klean Kanteen products will be made from certified recycled stainless steel.

Klean Kanteen has consistently been recognised for its dedication to environmental and social issues. Testing the Waters Gearing up for a day of fishing with Dean Thomson We partnered with fishing veteran Dean Thomson, proud Queenslander and the son of a two-time Bass Angler of the Year champion in the ABT bass tournaments, to put our products to the trawling test. Dean reviews and shares his experiences with a range of Zen angling accessories.

When I was growing up, I spent a lot of my younger years fishing with my father. I was so inspired at a young age and fell in love with everything about fishing and what it had to offer. Being outside and one with nature, whether it was in an impoundment fishing for Australian bass, or in the bay targeting saltwater species, it was just meant for me.

Being around and part of the professional fishing industry for the best part of 20 odd years now, I have found that there's always something new to be found in fishing, and nothing in 08 | ZEN MAG

my mind is ever classed as mastered. Fishing in tournaments overseas and in Australia against some of the best anglers in the country, I’m forever looking for that upper hand to make my fishing adventures run more smoothly, or those perks to keep me on the water for as long as I can.

I have been given the opportunity to trial a few great products from Zen and how I can use them in my everyday fishing adventures, and they have all excelled.

This backpack would have to be one of the best fishing accessories I have used in terms of versatility, functionality and comfort. This 100% waterproof bag keeps all my important items bone dry and is the perfect size for land-based fishing. I tested this bag out by loading it up with several tackle boxes and fishing equipment – they all fit perfectly!

This duffel was a perfect choice for my boating as I could store my important items in there to keep them safe and prevent them from getting too wet or even damaged.

The duffel bag could store so many clothes and other items.

Most of my wet weather gear stayed in this bag on my boat for those rainy days, as there is nothing worse than finding your wet weather clothing soaked before you put it on.

Now this amazing multi-tool is a must have for every fisherman. Putting this tool through its paces from using it to unhook fish, fillet fish and then even starting a fire to cook the fish – every single tool on the Leatherman Signal is perfect for outdoor adventures, especially fishing.

Using this tool around salt water held up well – but like anything we use near salt, it should be washed thoroughly to ensure the quality of the tool remains the same. I found that a quick rinse in some fresh water was the most effective way.

Every fisherman that keeps fish to eat knows the importance of a sharp knife, and the Morakniv set was a perfect solution.

Filleting fish can sometimes be the worst part of a fishing adventure, but with the sharp and functional knives from the Morakniv Hunting set, it became one of the most satisfying parts as we were not wasting any part of the fish.

A decent light is a must have when fishing at night. These two Ledlenser products have been perfect – not only for fishing but also everyday use. One of the best features about the H7R Signature headlamp is the Bluetooth control which can be controlled via your phone.

The P2R Core penlight has been super easy to use for fishing at night, setting the boat up and general use. The run times on both of these lights were outstanding, which was one of the best features, as the reliability of having a torch that won't go flat in a short period of time was a plus for me. They can both be charged via USB, which was also another great feature since it allowed us to charge on the run in the car or on the boat.

All in all, the gear that I was equipped with were very easy choices to add into my fishing equipment for everyday use.

SENSORY MARKETING IN RETAIL

Come to your Senses Learn how sensory marketing can help to create a more impactful in-store experience

With many calling the pandemic the destroyer of brick-andmortar stores, the past few years saw many brands shifting their business from offline to online. Facing the impending doom of the pandemic and digitalisation, these desperate times saw the rise of the future of brands and physical retailing – sensory marketing. Through creating brand content that engages with an individual’s five senses: sight, scent, touch, taste and sound, sensory marketing is an increasingly popular method for brands to appeal, create unique and compelling experiences, and enhance brand impressions and associations with their target audiences.

Many studies on sensory marketing have found that different sensory stimulation can evoke different effects. A 2008 study on embodied cognition – the concept that our body sensations can influence our perceptions – found that an individual is more likely to perceive a stranger to have a warm and friendly personality when holding a warm drink, as opposed to meeting someone when holding a cold drink in hand. In the case of sound, studies found that music that is played in a retail setting also has various effects – a 1982 study found that slower ambient music resulted in more purchases as the music decreased the shopping pace of its patrons, where they ended up spending more time in the store. The evidence is clear – through engagement of various senses, brands and retailers can influence one’s perception, reinforce customer loyalty and even boost sales.

However, it is even more important to note that when done incorrectly, sensory marketing can also be a two edged sword – when the consumer perceives the messaging as inconsistent to the brand, or in a sense experience sensory disconfirmation, they would find the brand and product less desirable. An example could be hearing rock music instead of relaxing tunes when entering a spa, or smelling rotisserie chicken in a designer store. It is extremely important for retailers to make sure that the stimulation strategy and brand are cohesive so the wrong narrative will not be evoked.

Apple

When various senses are stimulated together, an emotional response is triggered before one’s cognitive consciousness.

In the case for Apple, their branding has a focus on simplicity, people and lifestyle. This brand aesthetic is reflected in their retail stores: white, bright, clean, spacious with product featured on their walls, the instant impression when walking into an Apple store is that it is contemporary, sleek and high-tech.

With all products on display, shoppers are encouraged to feel and interact with Apple products, converse with the Apple “Genius” employees where they could listen to their personal accounts of user experiences, and are introduced to and immersed in the “Apple Lifestyle”. Apple leverages its brick and mortar stores by creating a multi-sensory experience, forming an offline environment that is consistent with the brand’s message and personality showcased online, ultimately creating a brand reinforcing space that strengthens customer’s perception of the brand.

It’s safe to say that brick and mortar stores have yet to meet their end. It’s time to come to our senses, leverage the edges of our physical retail stores and take your brands and sales to the next level with sensory marketing.

The question is – in treading the fine line between sensory overstimulation and enhancing the shopper’s experience in store, how can retailers leverage the advantages of their brick and mortar stores and appeal or even reinforce their brands with sensory marketing?

Fjällräven

According to a review in 2012 on sensory marketing, the engagement of scent can help evoke emotional and semantic connections with memories and even boost brand perception. With a brand message and mission of gearing up adventurers and helping them fall in love with the outdoors in true Swedish fashion, the Sydney Fjällräven store is decorated with candles that fill the shop with the scent of pine, creating an environment where shoppers find themselves encouraged to go out into nature while surrounded by products that will prepare them for their adventures ahead.

NATURE'S CHOICE

Wool Knows Best

One of the oldest and most functional natural materials Natural materials have always been the preferred choice for Fjällräven when developing products.

Wool, one of the oldest natural materials, is also one of the most functional. A sophisticated natural fibre, it is arguably one of nature’s most technical materials, outperforming many “high-tech” man-made fibres. The properties of wool suit the different needs we normally have for making materials that are used outdoors. Those needs are often keeping the user dry, warm, and comfortable. Wool is excellent at satisfying all of those needs.

Wool is excellent at insulating in cold and wet conditions for two reasons. First, the fibres and yarn are bulky, which traps air.

The second is that wool is hydrophobic on its surface, which means that water does not stick to it. A tightly-woven wool also sheds water to some degree. Furthermore, it can collect water as vapour inside, rather than on its surface like a synthetic.

When it is used as mid layer, the wool acts as a buffer, storing some of the moist air and keeping it away from the user. Since wool stores moisture inside the fibre, away from air, there is no opportunity for bacteria to grow. Wool garments are therefore odour resistant without the need of added chemicals.

Fjällräven wool

Wool is an extremely functional material. It’s warming when cold, cooling when the weather is warm. Odour resistant while at the same time effective at wicking away moisture. In its sheared form it is also renewable and biodegradable.

For these reasons, Fjällräven naturally incorporate wool extensively into the assortment – both in clothes and equipment. Fjällräven sources wool in different ways, always aiming for the highest quality and the lowest impact. The virgin wool used is always mulesing-free but most preferably 100% traceable and ethically produced as well.

Traceable wool

Wool that is traceable to farm level. The farms are certified and regularly inspected with respect to animal welfare, environment, chemical use, land use, social sustainability and fibre quality. The inspections take place every third year and are carried out by an independent third party.

Re-wool

Re-wool is what Fjällräven calls recycled wool. It consists of pre- and post-consumer recycled wool, cutting spill from wool garment producers and worn out garments. The material is washed, sorted by colour, shredded and spun into new yarns.

The result is a richly coloured yarn that is mixed with polyester or polyamide for extra strength.

Recovered Wool

Selected, mulesing-free surplus wool from Swedish sheep farmers’ seasonal sheering – a by-product of the meat industry. Great quality wool that would otherwise mostly have been burned or gone to landfill. Selected and refined into a high quality material, Fjällräven uses it as an insulating fill material in jackets and in a hard-pressed version as an innovative backplate on the Lappland Hike 15 backpack.

How to take care of your wool

Wool is pretty amazing. It keeps you warm on winter expeditions, cool on summer treks and it does all this while resisting dirt and odour. So, in a way, this actually makes wool easy to care for – seeing as it does a lot of the hard work on its own. But with a little extra effort from you, your wool garments really can last a lifetime.

Washing your wool garments

Because of its dirt- and odour-resisting properties, you don’t actually need to wash wool that often. In most cases a good airing outdoors or in a humid environment (like in the bathroom when you shower), should be good enough.

However, if you do notice marks or smells then it is ok to wash wool.

You should first check the washing instructions on the product’s care label, as some wool should never be machinewashed. Secondly, if it’s just a small dirty mark it’s better to hand wash that area, rather than wash the entire garment. Not only does this save energy and resources, but it also helps extend the lifetime of your product.

If it can be machine-washed, use a mild or wool-specific detergent, a low temperature and, if possible, the wool or hand-wash setting on your washing machine. Because wool is made of proteins, ordinary detergents can break down the amino acids in the fibres and remove the wool’s natural lanolin. This makes the fibres weaker and dryer and can eventually cause holes to form in your favourite wool shirt.

If hand washing, don’t leave wool clothing soaking for a long time. Instead, lift it in and out of the water several times then remove excess water with a towel. Do not wring it out.

Reshape the item after washing and lay it flat to dry. Do not tumble dry your wool clothing. This will lead to shrinkage, pilling and a general decline in the quality.

Storing and general maintenance of wool garments

To avoid discolouration, store your wool garments away from direct sunlight. We suggest a clothes cover, or a cardboard box to keep your wool items aired but out of reach from wool-hungry insects and moths. Note that long-term storage on hangers may result in stretching and loss of shape.

Some types of wool may start to pill, especially in certain areas like the sleeves, sides of the body and on the back if you carry a backpack. This is natural and doesn’t affect the garment’s functionality, but nobody wants a scruffy looking wool sweater, so it’s best to remove it regularly with a special device. Simply run the device over the surface of the garment and shave off the bobbling. But don’t push too hard; the device is like a small razor so it could damage the garment if you use too much force.

Riding to Inspire

Travelling across the Apple Isle with OverBoard On a mission to raise awareness and funds for nystagmus with a bike ride around Tasmania, we geared cyclist Mike Larcombe up for his journey. Mike shares with us his Tasmania trip, with a little help from OverBoard.

I was born with congenital nystagmus, a complex visual impairment, characterised by involuntary eye movements, affecting focus and depth perception. I have had it my whole life, but just kind of got on with it.

However, when I found out my nephew was born with it just over 4 years ago, I decided I wanted to do something about it – I set up Walk For Wiggly Eyes (W4WE) and started planning my walk across New Zealand to prove to him and to others that we 014 | ZEN MAG

don't have to let our nystagmus (or any other condition) define who we want to be.

After finishing my walk across New Zealand two years ago, I wanted to do something different. It didn't take long to formulate the idea of riding a bicycle around Tasmania – picturesque, easy to get to, and a sizable challenge in a short time frame. Bring it on Tasmania!

My journey started and ended in the Tasmanian capital Hobart.

Travelling in an anticlockwise direction, I visited Tasmania's iconic sites like Maria Island, Bay of Fires, Cradle Mountain, Lake Rosebury, and Strahan, as well as many secluded and lesser known spots.

Overall, the ride took me 17 days, covering a total of over 1,200km. I particularly enjoyed covering large distances, and still had plenty of time to stop at nice locations and spots throughout the day, with plenty of time to explore.

Going around each corner I was always in anticipation of what would come at the end of the bend, always hoping for a fun downhill but also expecting a gruelling uphill. I got to meet some amazing people on my travels and I got to see some beautiful locations, many that I have never been to before.

For my ride, the legends at Zen were amazing enough to send me a waterproof bike pannier, a Classic waterproof backpack and a waterproof phone case from their OverBoard brand.

Pannier

I used the Pannier to store all my food in and had absolutely no issues with it. It was easy to fill and fit on the back bike frame and kept my gear dry and secure whilst riding, even on some pretty "uneven" roads. Easy to remove from the bike, easy to carry, and easy to unpack...perfect! The reflective strips on the pannier were a massive must as well, making it much easier to be seen on the roads. Plus, the strips' glow looks really cool in the dark when a light is shone on them.

Backpack

The padding on the back of the backpack makes for a more comfortable and less "sweaty" feel than all other dry bags that I've used in the past. The straps were comfy and had ventilation holes, again helping to feel less sweaty. Plus, using a waterproof backpack had its advantages. When it did rain, I didn't have to stop and change anything. All my gear was protected and I could just carry on powering through!

Waterproof Phone Case

The phone case is great. Completely waterproof and very simple to use. I could easily fit my Oppo Ren Z into the case, and secure it inside with the clips. As I was riding in uncharted territories (to me), I was using Google Maps a fair amount, especially around towns and cities. I also love that the case is see through on both sides, so it was easy to use both phone cameras.

I do enjoy listening to music while riding, so it would've been a nice if the case would allow me to connect my headphones to my phone whilst still keeping it protected, but as far as waterproof phone cases go, with ease of phone use, including use of both the front and back cameras, the OverBoard phone case is excellent.

Highlights/Lowlights

Low points of the trip: Maybe on the first day, there was a couple of moments where I thought to myself (and probably out loud) "oh s***! What have I got myself into. I don't know if I can finish this", but that's usual for me on these big challenges, and that's a head game. I also didn't particularly enjoy the last day riding. There wasn't much to see, it was an overcast day and I was ready to just power through and finish.

Riding uphill in some of the stronger winds or having to really pedal downhill because of the winds.

Highlights of the trip: Finishing, but I always say that! Hooning it down some of the winding roads. Summiting Cradle Mountain was so much fun. Canyoning in Dove Lake...just Cradle Mountain National Park as a whole was awesome.

I really enjoyed my time at Tullah and Lake Rosebury, pretty awesome location. Ahhhh, there were so many. Put it this way, there are so many more highlights than low points, that this list could be endless.

Once touted as science fiction not so long ago, Augmented Reality (AR) will soon become the norm for retailers, bringing the in-store experience home for consumers.

The e-commerce market has been experiencing growth for many years now, however the pandemic has made the rate of uptake soar to new heights. This significant increase in online sales has led to development in the digital space. From the introduction of Web3 to the evolution of the metaverse, there are huge changes coming to the way people interact and live in the digital world.

For retailers the past two years have been exceptionally challenging, with the introduction of forced lockdowns, the move away from in-store browsing has led to the need for innovation in retail. There are two ways we can tackle this issue; firstly, by giving the consumer something that is not able to be experienced online, and secondly by finding ways to elevate the online experience. As stores are still experiencing lack of foot traffic, many retailers are turning to the latter, opting to bring the online experience to life from the comfort of the consumers own home with many experts turning to Augmented Reality to make this happen.

Augmented Reality can also address a huge issue that arises with e-commerce purchases, which is the high rate of returns. As realtors compete in the digital marketplace, they often reduce shipping costs for large transactions or comp the cost of shipping altogether for certain purchases. This naturally emboldens consumers to treat their transactions as a trial purchase, with many consumers purchasing with the intent to try the product and then return. This is a huge issue for retailers as it leads to inflated figures and net losses for the business. By implementing AR in the purchasing stage, consumers can evaluate the product at a higher level, giving them the information they need to make a firm purchase.

Augmented Reality can feel like a futuristic and out of reach concept for a small Australian business, but the nature of the digital world means that anyone, anywhere can access technology that once may have been kept for large conglomerates. You may be thinking "what could augmented reality do for my business? What would I use this technology to show?".

The answer is, there really are no limitations, whether you tap into AR technology to render your products in a 3D iteration, bringing a level of detail that was previously unachievable with static imagery, to the creation of a virtual change room, whereby consumers can see a visual rendering of how the product would look on them prior to purchase.

After all, the famous adage ‘innovate or die’ has continued to ring true, with Augmented Reality another step in the right direction.

An American Dream Story

With over three decades of history and many more to come, Nite Ize was not built upon one idea, but from a passion for solving life’s everyday problems.

“I was always anxious about what it was I was going to do since high school,” says Rick. “It wasn't about where I was going to work – it was what I was gonna make. I was planning on making something and I just didn't know what it was, and I think it turned out to be a solution to a problem and essentially, that solution became one of literally hundreds over the 34 years now.”

It all began when Rick took an ordinary experience, came up with an idea and turned it into a solution. “It was a really simple product and I remember it was the very first one,” says Rick.

As an avid fisher at 19, Rick took his favourite flashlight – a Christmas gift from his parents - out at night to fish. “Well, sure enough, we had a small shark on the line, and I remember having the rod in one hand, the gaff in the other, and of course, that light ended up in my mouth, like so many people would try to free their hands intermittently. So the other people on the fishing team and I like to talk. Of course, I opened my mouth and dropped the light in the water.” says Rick.

Returning to the spot the next day and pulling his flashlight out of the water, with a quick pat down and some new batteries, his Christmas gift was working again. “I was always into the details. I was interested in how things worked and I just appreciated quality products and things that really worked right and really lasted.”

Soon after their fishing trip and his new found passion for quality products, Rick had his next adventure planned – a winter ascent of the Grand Teton in Wyoming.

“It was an early 2AM start and there wasn't any moon that night. I remember it was just absolutely pitch dark, even though we had all the snow on the ground, and I had an old incandescent headlamp with the big battery pack,” continued Rick. “And I remembered I had that small flashlight in my pocket and I turned it on. I held it up to the side of my head and I was like 'Wow, this light is so much brighter than this big giant headlamp I have on.'”

As Rick continued his ascent up the mountain, an idea rose as well. “I thought, 'Well, how cool would it be to take this really great flashlight that was so popular at the time and to just turn it into a headlamp.'”

With his idea, Rick quickly moved onto turning what he had envisioned into a physical product. “I befriended a lady from my mount geography class, and I said 'I have this idea, I was wondering if you would be open to help me make it 'cause I don't know how to sew, but I have envisioned what I want to make.'” says Rick. “So is the case for 34 years now, I have

lots of people that helped me figure out how to actually build these things.”

With the help of his fellow classmate, Nite Ize’s very first product was born – simple but effective, the headband solved the problem of how somebody could take a small flashlight like that and turn it into a headlamp.

“So for $5 or $6, I essentially went and showed that product to all the locations where the flashlight was being sold, one store at a time,” says Rick. "From all the outdoor shops to the Army Navy surplus stores, they started to buy them. I started to put together the business plan, and amazingly enough, my family was willing to loan me $1500,” says Rick. “By the time I graduated from school, the headbands had continued to really sell and I told my family after they helped me with my college education that this was it – I was going to go out and sell these headbands for a living.”

“It's not like I ever had a whiteboard in the background and be like well, this is what we're going to create 34 years later,“ adds Rick. “It was all about a compelling solution to solve a problem that people could relate to, and we went out and sold the solution.”

“I really believe in this mentality of innovate or die.” says Rick.

“We were always wanting to do something new, because even though you could have the greatest products at the time and things are going well, we wanted to have more. We wanted to do something that was not just because we could, but because it really made a difference and it had a reason to exist.

I think it's our responsibility as manufacturers and for all of our resellers to make it interesting for the customers, right?”

“So building the brand and having people recognise the brand and then trusting it, I think that's what it is.” says Rick. “Being compelling, to have people be willing to try a product in a completely different category of ours and go 'Wow, we don't know Nite Ize for this category, but since we've had some interesting experiences from other products we've bought from them, we like the way they go about it.'”

Going on 34 years now, Nite Ize’s strategy for staying ahead of the game is by championing innovation.

WIth a diverse range of products as well as retailers and customers of various sizes, Rick contributes Nite Ize’s popularity to trust.

“Finding people that are willing to look for new things and having them try something new is a big deal. There's opportunities for retailers to try new things, and you certainly understand the breadth of those programmes that can help the retailers figure out which products they should give a go, which products that are really successful, and what haven't they tried before that they should” adds Rick. “So I'm always a big fan of asking people to try new products that we stand by.

Obviously we wouldn't be here if things didn't continue to sell.”

“We're very into the details around quality and that's why we have a worry-free guarantee on our products – we really stand behind them.” continues Rick. “That's our intention and that's what we back up and support. “

Putting aside the inventor hat, quality is also another huge proponent for Nite Ize. “Products really need to perform.” says Rick. “They really need to be differentiated and that's around the innovation.

Anybody who knows me knows my backpacks – filled with all our products constantly. They're in my pockets all the time, but that's just sort of a way of life, like we have them with us all the time. So we're committed to making something that really, really works and that people can hopefully go 'Wow. I never really thought about that, but that really is useful.'”

Even after 34 years, Nite Ize has no plans to slow down on creating and improving their collection of products. “You're going to see more of what we've been doing,” says Rick.

“There's been something compelling enough that's allowed us to go into this brand new category which we've created, and that's the fun part – we're working on products two years out from now, and I think I'm more excited about the business now than ever before.”

“I feel like we're really just warming up,” continues Rick. “And everyone at the company is excited about being able to go out and talk about things that we've never made before, so it's great. There'll be a lot of innovation, a lot of new products to come, and that's certainly the driving force around the brand.”

Talking Shop Meet Doron from Homecamp

Aesthetically pleasing from head to toe and on a mission to inspire people to reconnect with nature, Doron Francis from Homecamp shares with us his know-how about running an e-commerce store.

The Homecamp Drive

It all started with Doron and his wife Stephanie, who opted for exploring the Australian outdoors instead of traveling overseas.

“We were saving money for a house, so were doing a lot of camping together and big hiking trips around the country,” says Doron. “We were noticing the differences in ourselves before going camping and then coming back from camping, and we started to really connect camping and being outdoors with health and wellbeing.”

“At the time there didn't seem to be anyone talking about that? I mean, it's quite a popular kind of idea now, but this is like sort of seven years ago,” continues Doron. “So we got really excited 024 | ZEN MAG

about the idea of creating a brand that was built around just getting people out and back into nature. None of the sporting aspects, none of the technical aspects, just getting people out into nature and encouraging them to get the benefits of being out in nature in terms of mental and physical health.”

They didn't stop at motivating people to go out into nature – it was also about reconnecting with themselves. “There are all sorts of skills that you can build which people living in the city have sort of lost: cooking in the open, making camp, cooking on an open fire, just all sorts of basic skills.” says Doron. “It is an element of Homecamp as well, you know, being educational.”

Sustainable through and through

With a passion for the outdoors, Homecamp is equally passionate about longevity – products, brand and the planet.

“The basics of sustainability for the business is that it our products need to be sustainable,” says Doron. “When we set out to do Homecamp, we really just wanted to emphasise making really high quality products and representing brands that we thought were very high quality as well.“ Having collaborated with beach cleanups, the Wilderness Society and environmental protection societies, Homecamp extends its passions for sustainability towards the environment as well.

Unity in Diversity

“It's more about integrating something within the brand that has a local and tangible result for us.” says Doron. “The idea for us is to build a brand that is everlasting, and we just keep banging that drum because that reflects back on the products and ultimately back on our brand as well.”

In an ever-changing climate of shopper demands and trends, Homecamp found a way of keeping their head in the game by being diverse but united – communications and business-wise.

“We really got in there early with Instagram and that was our main communications channel. “says Doron. “A lot of our promotion is really aimed at urbanites, and traditionally a lot of outdoor brands were talking to men almost exclusively, and we sort of reversed that when we started Homecamp. We spend most of our time trying to build our EDM, our newsletter – that's really important to us,” says Doron. “We probably have nearly as many people on our newsletter as we do on Instagram.”

“What we've always done is create the content, work with different photographers, then maybe create a blog post or story, post that story to our newsletter audience, and then use the assets from that in Instagram.” continues Doron. “We put a lot of emphasis in having a certain look to our visual communications.

Our content and visual style are well up there for a small player.“ “We've got our own flavour and our own aesthetic as well with our products and just the look and feel of the brand.” adds Doron. “We've always built in a kind of element of teaching and informing our customers, and sort of bringing them along on the journey with us.”

Featuring many international brands alongside their Homecamp branded products, what is their key to staying competitive in the industry?

“What we try to do is cherry pick the brands that we think reinforce our own brand. Our products are very high quality as well, so it's symbiotic.” says Doron. “We'd love to do every product in every category, but there's no way we can do that so there will always be a mix. As long as the brands are excellent, then the best we can find in that sort suits us.” says Doron.

I can tell you that as a camera operator I’m thankful for any light source I can get my hands on, even if the endless dials and power cords make interfacing with studio lights a chore.

But you don’t have to be a gaffer to light a scene – in fact, I’d wager you do it every day without a second thought.

Picture this: you wake up one early Sunday morning to rays of light peeking through the window blinds. Luckily, the cord which opens the blinds is just within reach from your bed!

Golden beams of sunshine flood into your space, signalling the start of a new day.

"Operating this little box of light is a piece of cake, which leaves your mind free to start thinking outside the box with creative applications" Actually, scratch that – you’ve just decided it’s time for bed.

With the flip of a switch your room plunges into darkness, enveloping your world in the bluish cast of moonlight.

Fancy tech is great, but I believe you shouldn’t need an electrical engineering degree to be able to operate a high quality light. We already use these household devices to bring light into our lives every day, so why can’t it be that simple with the tools we buy?

Atka’s product designers asked the same question. I’ve been testing out their new Lightcube for a few weeks and I think their bright idea holds the answer to our problems. Carried on a keychain attached to my belt loop, the Lightcube has been

following me everywhere I go for the past few weeks. Here are my findings: It’s built like an essential item. Weighing in at 40 grams but constructed sturdily, you’ll have a hard time convincing yourself to leave it at home. Throw it in your bag and you’ll be happy you have it when you need it.

One press of a button: it’s on! One more press takes you to its maximum brightness level of 200 lumens, and another after that activates an SOS sequence. Hold the button to turn the device off. Plug it in via the attached USB or insert your own micro-USB and, once fully charged, you’re good to go for 10 hours of use.

Operating this little box of light is a piece of cake, which leaves your mind free to start thinking outside the box with creative applications.

Walking home from school in the dark is a thing of the past… once students use the included carabiner to hook the Cube onto their school backpack. Car breaks down on a camping trip? You can use the magnetic base to attach the Cube to the hood of your car and check the engine. If you require assistance, switch light modes so you may issue an SOS signal. Looking to vlog the whole saga? Use the variable light feature to find the correct brightness and then point the cube at your subject to wash it with diffuse light.

If solving problems with fun solutions is your thing then the Lightcube is for you. As a gift it will brighten anyone’s day, from technician to teenager. I’ve had a blast testing out the Lightcube and my verdict is it passes with flying colours. You don’t have to be tech savvy to use it, but you’ve made a savvy purchase if you buy it.
