DEAR READERS,
“My Philosophy”
I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon if I can. I seek opportunity – not security. I will refuse to be a kept citizen, to be humbled and dulled by having my state and nation look after me. I want to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed – never to be numbered among those weak and timid souls who have known neither victory nor defeat. I know that happiness can come only from the inside through hard constructive work and sincere positive thinking. I know that the so-called pleasures of the moment should not be confused with a state of happiness. I know that I can get a measure of inner satisfaction from any job if I intelligently plan and courageously execute it. I know that, if I put forth every iota of strength that I possess – physical, mental, spiritual – toward the accomplishment of a worthwhile task, ere I fall exhausted by the wayside, the Unseen Hand will reach out to pull me through. Yes, I want to live dangerously, plan my procedures on the basis of calculated risks, to resolve the problems of everyday living into a measure of inner peace. I know that if I know how to do all this, I will know how to live, and if I know how to live, I will know how to die.
This letter is the final Dear Readers message of our company’s first century. The next message you receive from me, at the end of September, will mark the beginning of our second century. Nothing is more appropriate than to let my grandfather have the honor of the last message of our first century.
His words still set the tone and attitude for how we approach every challenge every day. We put our heads down and do the work. We find satisfaction in doing a tough job well, taking care of our families and friends, making lives better for others and having a little fun with outstanding people by our side.
I honor all the wonderful women and men who have made our company what we are today. Whether they were our team members, spouses, parents or children, their collective efforts and support have ensured our success.
The theme for the recent annual meeting of Zachry Construction was “One Company. One Culture. One Century.” I believe my grandfather would be proud of us, and especially of our culture. Our core values drive our decisions and our actions. Those values are the summation of our first century and the foundation for our next one.
We are a company of dreamers and builders. We are ready to take on every challenge to become “One Company. One Culture. Two Centuries.”

EMPOWERING WOMEN’S SUCCESS
How do we make women feel seen and help them find a sense of community in a male-dominated industry? According to Katy Adams , operations analytics manager of Capitol Aggregates, Inc., Zachry Women Breaking Ground (ZWBG) handles that challenge one initiative at a time.
During Women in Construction Week, Zachry Corporation’s Employee Resource Group organized various events aimed at promoting support and development for its members and the company at large. From hosting member meetings, to holding networking and community outreach events, the team sought out a number of angles to empower change.
A highlight of the week was a corporate webinar featuring both male and female members sharing their experiences and insights. It was inspiring to hear heartfelt stories from individuals representing diverse roles within the industry on why they are members of ZWBG and why the mission of the group is important to them.
Adams noted another area that stands out as being especially impactful: fostering the next generation of women in construction. By engaging students in local schools through hands-on activities and educational sessions, the group strives to spark interest in careers in STEM fields and to pave the way for future leaders. As Adams put it, “If you can see it, you can be it.”

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE AT CAPITOL AGGREGATES
Capitol Aggregates rolled out a new blend in their ECO-MENT line of cement products in May according to Mike Wallace, VP of sales and marketing.
The new blend was created to be a sustainable alternative that can produce more cement without increasing CO 2 emissions. During the development of the new cement, everyone across Zachry’s different organizations got to join in on brainstorming names for the blend with 54 team members pitching in 122 ideas. Rachael Ashton, Zachry Construction project engineer on the White Oak Bayou project, developed the winning name, DuroPozz.
With the recent completion of a second bulk fuel storage tank, the team at Capitol Aggregates laid the foundation for a future that is rooted in equal parts sustainability and efficiency.
According to VP of Aggregates Scotty Gerbes, “We built these facilities with the future in mind. These operations are expected to grow and expand over the years, so it’s great for us in the long-term — we should not have to come back and re-do any of the work, add anything else or worry about tearing them down to rebuilding them.”
Another spotlight on Capitol’s efforts toward sustainability can be seen with the recent construction of three water tanks at the company’s Poteet plant location. Plant Manager Justin Bradley explained, “Many plants use settling ponds to filter out solids from

process water for reuse. Some materials are lighter and carry through these ponds, which can lead to sending dirty water back to your plant or using clean water from city or well supply. These tanks combined with our settling ponds allow us to minimize the amount of freshwater supplemented into the operation.”
Each of these projects reinforces the idea that building sustainability — and sustaining success — remain top of mind for the team at Capitol.

UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITY: ZACHRY HOTELS’ NEW VISA PROGRAM
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the hospitality industry to adapt quickly. But the team at Hilton Palacio del Rio wanted to think bigger aiming to make an impact that extended far beyond the hotel’s grounds. They found exactly that when its new visa program was created.
With restrictions on international travel and rapidly fluctuating workforce dynamics becoming increasingly common, the H-2B visa program emerged as a beacon of hope offering a streamlined pathway to recruit skilled workers from Mexico.
The visa program began last year when Marie Surls, executive director of human resources, along with other stakeholders recognized the potential of the H-2B visa program for sourcing talent to fill crucial roles within the organization.
Another key team member involved was Norma Gutierrez, assistant director of human resources at Hilton Palacio del Rio. As Gutierrez recalled the many challenges encountered along the way, what stood out most to her was the resilience of the team at Hilton Palacio del Rio.

From securing housing arrangements for temporary staff to sorting through the logistics of visa reapplications, every step presented its own set of challenges. Yet the team’s determination to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce ultimately helped them overcome these obstacles.
Highlighting the program’s impact right from the start, Gutierrez shared the experiences of seven Mexican women employed under temporary visas through the program. Team members went above and beyond to ensure their holistic well-being — doing everything from facilitating housing accommodations and donating furnishings to assisting with paperwork difficulties. Ultimately, these efforts made it feel that much smoother for the women to transition to a new country — and career.

SAFETY ZONE
At Zachry, safety is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring personal and project safety. During Construction Safety Week from May 6 to May 10, 2024, we took significant steps to enhance safety at every job site. The week began with a comprehensive safety meeting on Monday, May 6, focusing on critical topics like “Value Every Voice” and “Speak Up/Listen Up” (SULU), and our commitment extended to tailored safety sessions conducted by foremen throughout the week. Through collective or segmented safety assessments, we reinforced our dedication to safety at every level creating a positive and secure work environment for all.

NEW PROJECTS UPDATE
U.S. 74 — Haywood County Bridges
Operations are underway on a groundbreaking project that will see Zachry Construction constructing three new bridges along U.S. Highway 74 in Waynesville, North Carolina. According to Kevin Allen, regional manager, this project will serve as a prime opportunity that can lay the groundwork for future developments.
“This project is a big opportunity to help us get a foot in the door in this part of the region. Our goal is to use this project to build relationships and gain some momentum to help win future projects that we are tracking.” – Kevin Allen
Valued at $42 million and set to be completed by early 2027, the project’s main goal is addressing critical infrastructure needs. In the meantime, as Ryan Buckley, senior project manager, put it, “One of our major challenges will be quickly working through temporary technical designs, which will then unlock concurrent work of project phases.”
Sewer Lift Station Project
In partnership with the Cibolo Creek Municipal Authority, the Zachry Underground and Utility Services (ZUUS) team is currently constructing a new sewer lift station and laying a new sewer line to address the needs of recent growth in the area and the inadequacy of the existing lift station. According to Jack Miller, project manager and estimator, the biggest challenge for this project lies in designing a precise layout for the sewer line to work around several unforeseen obstructions. The anticipated completion timeline is March 2025. Another notable project that is underway is focused on the team lowering a recycled water line for the Randolph Air Force Base to allow for road widening. That project was completed in early May.
Connecting Roads Across Texas
Legacy Drive in Prosper, Texas, is getting a long-awaited extension to improve access from U.S. Highway 380 to the downtown area. Valued at more than $9 million, the project will extend the existing road to open access from Prairie Street to First Street where traffic is currently forced to cut through neighborhoods and school zones. Aside from the logistical hurdles of projects, one of the biggest challenges for the team is simply working around the weather. As Project Manager Ian Stephenson said, “It’s difficult trying to embank in the rainy part of the year, because each rain event can shut down trucking for days.”
Zachry was recently awarded another large-scale project valued at $54 million to connect two existing sections of Panther Creek Parkway in Frisco, Texas. The 18-month-long project will create a continuous 10-inch concrete roadway that crosses over a railroad and creek improving infrastructure to increase mobility in the area and provide access to the new Universal Studios development at the corner of Panther Creek Parkway and Dallas North Tollway. Project Manager Daniel Schaale noted the biggest hurdle for construction is the tight timeframe with the team’s window to work restricted between October and December due to railroad limitations.
ZACHRY’S ANNUAL MEETING RECAP
Zachry Construction Corporation recently held its annual meeting where team members from across the company came together for three days of inspiration and camaraderie as they reflected on the successes of the past year while also looking ahead at what is to come. The theme for this year’s annual meeting was “The Power of One: Company, Culture, Century” as a nod to the company’s centennial milestone.
As Megan Medina, director of talent management and Zachry Annual Meeting chair, said, “It’s an opportunity to slow down and take a moment to really appreciate all the hard work that everybody puts in throughout the year — and to honor people who have gone above and beyond.”
Day one kicked things off with a big bang. Deputy Regional Manager and Zachry Annual Meeting Co-Chair Tyler Farella spoke about the excitement that corporate coaching firm Afterburner brought to the meeting with its Top Gun-inspired approach to strategic planning. Through mission execution workshops, the team had fun while developing a better understanding of how to work together in furthering the company’s goals as well as their own.
Another highlight of the event was the annual Awards Ceremony where team members who went above and beyond their duties were recognized for their hard work and dedication. This year’s ceremony saw Gary Doty receive the first-ever H.B. Zachry Legacy of Leadership Award — spotlighting his 39-year tenure with the company from starting as a welder and working his way up to his current position as a VP. “Congratulations to Gary Doty on his 39-year career,” said Travis Mross, executive vice president.

Bringing things to a close was keynote speaker — and U.S. military veteran — Patrick Nelson’s message on why safety should always be top priority. Sharing his unique perspective, his story reinforced the real-world impact made when each individual understands their role in ensuring the safety of the group.
Reflecting on the event, Medina and Farella emphasized the significance of this year’s meeting in fostering a shared sense of purpose among team members. By bringing people together from different areas and providing opportunities for engaging collaboration, this year’s meeting was a start-to-finish success in strengthening Zachry’s already tight-knit culture.

CRUCIGRAMA DE VERANO
Acercándonos al cierre disfrutamos el mensaje del discurso del veterano militar de EE.UU. Patrick Nelson sobre por qué la seguridad siempre debe ser la mayor prioridad. Compartiendo su perspectiva única, su historia reforzó el impacto que se genera en el mundo real cuando cada persona comprende su rol en resguardar la seguridad del grupo.
Reflejándose en el evento, Medina y Farella enfatizaron la importancia de la reunión de este año en fomentar un sentido de propósito compartido entre los miembros del equipo. Reuniendo a personas de diferentes áreas y dando oportunidades de colaboración interesantes, la reunión de este año fue un éxito de principio a fin al fortalecer la cultura ya muy unida de Zachry.

RESUMEN DE LA REUNIÓN ANUAL DE ZACHRY
Zachry Construction Corporation recientemente realizó su reunión anual donde miembros del equipo de toda la empresa se reunieron en tres días de inspiración y camaradería reflejándose en los éxitos del último año mientras también miran hacia el futuro en lo que está por venir. El tema de la reunión anual de este año fue "El Poder del Uno: Una Empresa, Una Cultura, Un Siglo" como reconocimiento al centenario de la empresa.
Como dijo Megan Medina, directora de gestión de talentos y presidente de la Reunión Anual de Zachry: "Es una oportunidad para desacelerar y tomarse un momento para realmente apreciar el gran trabajo que ponen todos durante el año - y para homenajear a las personas que han hecho más de lo esperado".
El día comenzó con un big bang. La Gerente Regional Adjunta y Copresidente de la Reunión Anual de Zachry,Tyler Farella, habló
sobre el entusiasmo que trajo la empresa de entrenamiento corporativo Afterburner a la reunión con su modelo de planificación estratégica inspirado en Top Gun. Mediante talleres de ejecución de misiones, el equipo se divirtió mientras desarrollaba un mejor entendimiento de cómo trabajar en conjunto para alcanzar los objetivos de la empresa y también los propios.
Otro destacado del evento fue la Ceremonia anual de Entrega de Premios donde los miembros del equipo que hicieron más de lo previsto fueron reconocidos por su gran trabajo y dedicación. La ceremonia de este año vio a Gary Doty recibir el primer H.B. de la historia. Premio al Legado de Liderazgo de Zachry — enfocándose en su mandato de 39 años en la empresa desde sus inicios como soldador y trabajando, subiendo de rango, hasta su puesto actual como vicepresidente. “Felicitaciones a Gary Doty por su carrera de 39 años” dijo Travis Mross, vicepresidente ejecutivo.

NUEVO ACTUALIZACIÓN DE PROYECTOS
U.S. 74 — Puentes en el Condado de Haywood
Se están llevando a cabo operaciones en un proyecto innovado que verá a Zachry Construction construir tres puentes nuevos a lo largo de U.S. Highway 74 en Waynesville, Carolina del Norte. Según Kevin Allen, gerente regional, este proyecto servirá como una excelente oportunidad que podrá sentar las bases para futuros desarrollos.
"Este proyecto es una gran oportunidad que nos ayudará a dar el primer paso de entrada a esta parte de la región.
Nuestro objetivo es utilizar este proyecto para formar relaciones y ganar algo de impulso que ayude a ganar futuros proyectos que estamos siguiendo". – Kevin Allen
Valuado en $42 millones y previsto para ser completado a principios de 2027, el objetivo principal del proyecto es tratar las necesidades críticas de la infraestructura. Mientras tanto, como dijo Ryan Buckley, gerente sénior del proyecto: "Uno de nuestros mayores desafíos será trabajar rápido en diseños técnicos temporales que liberen el trabajo simultáneo en las fases del proyecto”.
Proyecto de Estación de Bombeo de Drenaje
Conjuntamente con la Autoridad Municipal de Cibolo Creek, el equipo de Zachry Underground and Utility Services (ZUUS) actualmente está construyendo una nueva estación de bombeo de drenaje y está colocando una nueva línea de desagüe para tratar las necesidades del reciente crecimiento en el área y la insuficiencia de la estación de bombeo existente. Según Jack Miller, gerente del proyecto y tasador, el mayor desafío para este proyecto se encuentra en diseñar un plano preciso para que la línea de desagüe funcione entorno a varias obstrucciones imprevistas. El plazo previsto para completarlo es marzo de 2025. Otro proyecto notable que se encuentra en proceso se enfoca en que el equipo baje una línea de agua reciclada para la Base de la Fuerza Aérea de Randolph que permita el ensanchamiento de la carretera. Ese proyecto se completó a principios de mayo.
Conectando Caminos En Todo Texas
En Legacy Drive en Prosper, Texas, se está realizando una extensión muy esperada para mejorar el acceso desde U.S. Highway 380 hasta el centro. Valuado en más de $9 millones, el proyecto extenderá el camino existente para abrir acceso desde Prairie Street hasta First Street, donde el tránsito actualmente está forzado a atravesar barrios y zonas de escuelas. Además de las dificultades logísticas de los proyectos, uno de los mayores desafíos para el equipo es simplemente trabajar dependiendo de las condiciones climáticas. Como dijo el Gerente del Proyecto Ian Stephenson: "Es difícil tratar de embarcarse en la temporada de lluvias del año, porque cada evento de lluvia puede cortar el transporte de camiones por días".
Zachry recientemente recibió otro proyecto de gran escala valuado en $54 millones, para conectar dos secciones existentes de Panther Creek Parkway en Frisco, Texas. El proyecto de 18 meses de duración creará una carretera de concreto de 10 pulgadas continuo que cruza por un ferrocarril y un arroyo, mejorando la infraestructura para mejorar la movilidad en el área y proporcionar acceso al nuevo desarrollo de Universal Studios en la esquina de Panther Creek Parkway y Dallas North Tollway. El Gerente del Proyecto Daniel Schaale destacó que la mayor dificultad para la construcción es el plazo ajustado con el tiempo que tiene el equipo para trabajar de forma restringida entre octubre y diciembre, debido a las limitaciones del ferrocarril.

ABRIÉNDONOS A LAS OPORTUNIDADES: NUEVO PROGRAMA DE VISAS DE ZACHRY HOTELS
La pandemia del COVID-19 forzó a la industria hotelera a adaptarse rápidamente. Pero el equipo de Hilton Palacio del Rio quiso pensar más en grande, apuntando a tener un impacto que se extendiera más allá de la propiedad del hotel. Y lo encontraron cuando se creó el nuevo programa de visas.
Con las restricciones en los viajes internacionales y siendo cada vez más comunes las rápidamente fluctuantes dinámicas de las fuerzas de trabajo, el programa H-2B visa surgió como un rayo de esperanza, ofreciendo una vía de acceso optimizada para contratar a trabajadores capacitados de México.
El programa de visas comenzó el año pasado, cuando Marie Surls, directora ejecutiva de recursos humanos, junto con otros participantes, reconocieron el potencial del programa H-2B visa para adquirir talentos y cubrir roles cruciales dentro de la organización.
Otra miembro del equipo clave involucrada fue Norma Gutiérrez, directora asistente de recursos humanos en Hilton Palacio del Rio. Mientras Gutiérrez recordaba los varios desafíos encontrados en el camino, lo que más se destacó fue la resiliencia del equipo de Hilton Palacio del Rio.

Desde cerrar acuerdos de vivienda para el personal temporal hasta organizar la logística de las nuevas solicitudes de visas, cada paso presenta su propio conjunto de desafíos. Aún así, la determinación del equipo en armar una fuerza de trabajo más diversa e inclusiva finalmente los ayudó a superar estos obstáculos.
Destacando el impacto del programa desde el principio, Gutiérrez compartió las experiencias de siete mujeres mexicanas empleadas con visas temporales a través del programa. Los miembros temporales del equipo hicieron más de lo esperado por asegurar su bienestar holístico - haciendo de todo, desde facilitar acomodaciones de vivienda y donando muebles, hasta ayudar con las dificultades de la documentación. Finalmente, estos esfuerzos hicieron que se sintiera mucho más fácil que las mujeres pudieran realizar la transición a un nuevo país - y a una nueva carrera laboral.

CONSTRUYENDO UN FUTURO SUSTENTABLE EN CAPITOL AGGREGATES
Capitol Aggregates desplegó una nueva combinación en su línea de productos de cemento ECO-MENT en mayo, según Mike Wallace, vicepresidente de ventas y marketing.
La nueva combinación fue creada para que sea una alternativa sustentable que pueda producir más cemento sin aumentar las emisiones de CO2. Durante el desarrollo del nuevo cemento, todas las personas de diferentes organizaciones de Zachry llegaron a participar en una lluvia de ideas para ponerle nombre a la combinación, donde 54 miembros del equipo presentaron 122 ideas. Rachael Ashton, ingeniera de proyectos de Zachry Construction en el proyecto White Oak Bayou, desarrolló el nombre ganador, DuroPozz.
Habiendo completado recientemente un segundo tanque de almacenamiento de combustible a granel, el equipo de Capitol Aggregates asentó las bases para un futuro enraizado por partes iguales en la sustentabilidad y en la eficiencia.
Según el Vicepresidente de Aggregates, Scotty Gerbes, “Construimos estas instalaciones pensando en el futuro. Se espera que estas operaciones crezcan y se amplíen con el correr de los años y es por eso que es algo grandiosos para nosotros a largo plazo - no tendríamos que volver y rehacer ningún trabajo, agregar nada ni preocuparnos por tener que sacarlo para volver a construirlo".
Otro destacado de los esfuerzos de Capitol para la sustentabilidad puede observarse en la reciente construcción de tres tanques de agua en las instalaciones de la planta de Pottet de la empresa. El Gerente de la Planta, Justin Bradley, explicó que “Muchas plantas

utilizan piscinas de decantación para filtrar los sólidos del agua del proceso, para volver a usarla. Algunos materiales son más livianos y llegan a estas piscinas, pudiendo hacer que se vuelva a enviar suciedad a su planta o teniendo que usar agua limpia de la ciudad o del suministro de un pozo. Estos tanques, combinados con nuestras piscinas de decantación, nos permiten minimizar la cantidad de agua potable suplementada en la operación".
Cada uno de estos proyectos refuerza la idea de que construir sustentabilidad - mantener el éxito - continúan siendo prioridades para el equipo en Capitol.

EMPODERANDO EL ÉXITO DE LAS MUJERES
¿Cómo hacemos que las mujeres se sientan vistas y cómo las ayudamos a que encuentren un sentido de comunidad en una industria dominada por hombres? Según Katy Adams, gerente de analíticas de las operaciones de Capitol Aggregates, Inc., Zachry Women Breaking Ground (ZWBG) maneja estos desafíos tratando una iniciativa por vez.
Durante la Semana de las Mujeres en la Construcción, el Grupo de Recursos para Empleados de Zachry Corporation organizó varios eventos orientados a promover el apoyo y el desarrollo de sus miembros y de la empresa en general. Desde organizar reuniones con los miembros hasta mantener una red y eventos de alcance a la comunidad, el equipo buscó una variedad de ángulos para impulsar el cambio.
Un destacado de la semana fue un seminario virtual corporativo con miembros tanto hombres como mujeres compartiendo sus experiencias y sus perspectivas. Fue inspirador escuchar historias emotivas de personas que representan diversos roles en la industria sobre cómo son miembros de ZWBG y por qué es importante para ellas la misión del grupo.
Adams destacó otra área que es especialmente impactante: fomentar la siguiente generación de mujeres en la construcción. Haciendo participar a estudiantes de las escuelas locales con actividades prácticas y sesiones educativas, el grupo se esmera por encender el interés en las carreras del área de STEM y pavimentar el camino para los futuros líderes. Como lo mencionó Adamas: "Si puedes verlo, puedes serlo".

Yo no elijo ser un hombre común. Es mi derecho no ser común si puedo. Busco oportunidades - no protección. Me niego a ser un ciudadano mantenido, humillado y apagado por hacer que mi estado y mi país se ocupen de mí. Deseo soñar y construir, fallar y triunfar - nunca ser uno más entre esas almas débiles y tímidas que no han conocido ni la victoria ni la derrota. Sé que la felicidad únicamente puede llegar desde el interior, con un trabajo constructivo y un pensamiento positivo sincero. Sé que los supuestos placeres del momento no deberían ser confundidos con un estado de felicidad. Sé que puedo obtener una medida de satisfacción interior en cualquier trabajo si lo planifico de forma inteligente y lo ejecuto con ánimo. Sé que si pongo cada pequeña parte de fuerza que poseo, tanto física como mental y espiritualmente, en lograr realizar una tarea que realmente valga la pena, antes de caer agotado a mitad de camino, una Mano Oculta se extenderá y me empujará para que pueda continuar. Sí, quiero vivir arriesgadamente, planificar mis procedimientos considerando los riesgos calculados, resolver los problemas de la vida cotidiana con una medida de paz interior. Sé que si aprendo a hacer todo esto, sabré cómo vivir y si sé cómo vivir, sabré cómo morir.
Esta carta es el último mensaje para los Queridos Lectores del primer siglo de nuestra empresa. El siguiente mensaje que reciban de mí, a fines de septiembre, marcará el comienzo de nuestro segundo siglo. Nada podría ser más apropiado que dejar que mi abuelo tenga el honor de dar el último mensaje de nuestro primer siglo.
Sus palabras establecerán el tono y la actitud de cómo abordaremos cada desafío cada día. Agachamos la cabeza y realizamos el trabajo. Encontramos satisfacción en hacer bien un trabajo difícil, cuidando a nuestras familias y amigos, haciendo que la vida sea mejor para los demás y divirtiéndonos un poco con gente maravillosa a nuestro lado.
Respeto a todas las maravillosas mujeres y hombres que han hecho que nuestra empresa sea lo que somos hoy. Ya sean los miembros de nuestro equipo, sus esposos y esposas, sus padres o sus hijos, sus esfuerzos colectivos y su apoyo han asegurado nuestro éxito.
El tema de la reciente reunión anual de Zachry Construction fue “Una Empresa. Una Cultura. Un Siglo". Creo que mi abuelo estaría orgulloso de nosotros y especialmente de nuestra cultura. Nuestros valores centrales impulsan nuestras decisiones y nuestras acciones. Esos valores son la sumatoria de nuestro primer siglo y son la base del próximo.
Somos una empresa de soñadores y constructores. Estamos listos para abordar cada desafío y convertirnos en "Una Empresa. Una Cultura. Dos Siglos".
