DEAR READERS, In the last edition of the Zachry Advantage, I wrote about the challenges of tight labor markets and the need for our organization to be flexible in how we manage our work and our workforce.

Flexibility is certainly required of our leadership to meet the important needs of our people, and we are testing a number of initiatives that we will share once we see some of the results. I personally believe that this is an area of real strategic importance for every operation and support function in each of our businesses. These innovative ideas and programs will continue, and I look forward to reporting on our efforts and direction in future editions.

Another critical and more immediate way to address tight labor markets is to listen to our people and develop those individuals with the skills and desire to improve. In compiling and reviewing the annual employee engagement surveys results, we found an interesting fact – we have an unusually high number of employees with fewer than two years with our company. The relatively higher number is primarily a result of the broad growth in all our businesses and reflects a bright future full of new people, ideas, energy and opportunity. The growing pains we face may be challenging, but those hurdles are also opportunities for great and necessary progress. Some of the desired technical and leadership skills will be taught formally. We highlight in this issue just a few of our programs aimed at enhancing the strengths of our processes and the skills of our people. We are also continuing the development of many other programs with internal resources, as well as identifying outstanding programs and instruction available outside of our organization.

Dr. Franklin Covey, author of “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” listed as Habit 5 that we should “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” I encourage everyone to periodically review our corporate values and think about whether your actions, and those of people around you, reflect those values. Across several of the values headlines is a consistent belief that people are different, want different things and are capable of different things. As a single organization, our goal is to create an environment that encourages individual identity supported by a predictable and collaborative structure. In other words, to be the best possible organization, we must develop both our individual and group skills.

Simply surviving through these growing pains is not our goal. Thriving among these growing pains will be a result of successfully leveraging our culture by combining these opportunities with the hallmarks of our values through individual care, sensitivity, honesty, respect and a true desire to understand and grow as individuals and as a collective team. I believe in each of you and that the sky is the limit.

PROJECT UPDATES Zachry teams make strides toward project completion on East Coast Zachry teams on the East Coast are busy improving roadways, intersections and bridges to ease traffic in booming communities and to keep drivers safe. From Zachry’s first project awarded in North Carolina at Interstate 40 and Interstate 77, to an urban renewal project on North Carolina Highway 55, to a bridge replacement project on Capital Boulevard in Raleigh, Zachry made impressive strides toward project completion on these East Coast projects.

CAPITAL BOULEVARD Awarded in August 2016 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the Capital Boulevard bridge replacement project in Raleigh, NC, is a $36.9 million bid-build project that entails replacing two “structurally deficient” bridges at two major interchanges in downtown Raleigh. The 0.82-mile project consists of grading, drainage, paving, signing, signals and structures replacement of Bridge #227 on U.S. 70/U.S. 401/NC 50 over Peace Street and Bridge #213 on U.S. 70/NC 50 over U.S. 401.

The updated bridges will give drivers a safer, more reliable entry point into downtown. Expected completion is scheduled for November 2019.

“Capital Boulevard is a major roadway and entry point into downtown Raleigh, which makes this project highly visible,” said Zachry Project Manager Nick Vilaret. “We’re executing this project on time and on budget, while minimizing impact to traffic to keep drivers in the area safe as we make further improvements for them.”

NORTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 55 Awarded in August 2016, North Carolina Highway 55 is on track for completion in 2021. Current project specs include widening the existing roadway, constructing four bridges (including two railroad structures), replacing the existing water, sanitary and storm sewer systems, and work with retaining walls, concrete, traffic signals and asphalt paving. To date, the project has been awarded 15 supplemental change order agreements totaling more than $900,000. Upon completion, the project site will serve as a major north-south artery in Durham, as well as the primary site for a loading and unloading platform for a future rail line that will run from Chapel Hill to Durham.

ZCC started construction on July 24, 2017. To commemorate the new project, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on Sept. 6, 2017.

ZCC’S FIRST NORTH CAROLINA PROJECT COMPLETE - INTERSTATE 40 / INTERSTATE 77 Zachry’s first project in North Carolina was awarded in 2012 for $89 million. The project was to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety at Interstate 40 and Interstate 77. Project specs included 44,000 cubic yards of concrete pavement, 800,000 cubic yards of excavation, ten bridges, 6,500 linear feet of sound wall, and a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at the intersection of I-40 and U.S. Highway 21. A significant change order added a traffic circle to U.S. 21 and a 350-foot-long box culvert for a total project award of $105.3 million. The team faced 186 rain days during the project’s first year and still completed work on time. The team also successfully completed construction under a traffic DDI, which was a first-time accomplishment for all team members. With the exception of some corrections to final road markings, the project was completed in June 2018.

Every month, approximately 70 employees working on the Capital Boulevard project in Raleigh, NC, receive a box filled with local fresh fruits and veggies from The Produce Box Company. Each box contains information about the farmers and where the produce is grown.

WHAT’S NEW AT ZACHRY

TECH CORNER

Stop. Look. Think.

Since March, the Zachry IT Dept. has been training employees on the importance of cybersecurity. It is critical that employees understand that cybercrime doesn’t just happen from a hacker penetrating our network. It happens because employees are not acting as our human firewall. Hackers are actively sending phishing emails that contain links that, if clicked, can cause great harm to our systems at Zachry. IT asks that all employees remember the red flags that were introduced in the cybersecurity email training and not to click on a link or open an attachment without making sure that it is a legitimate email.

Learning Managment System.

Zachry Construction continues to maintain a commitment to ensuring that employees receive the best training and professional development available. In an effort to stay at the industry forefront, a Learning Management System (LMS) was recently implemented as part of the Zachry Academy™ training program. The LMS is a collaborative platform designed to expose employees to industry and companywide best practices via e-learning courses and programs. It is designed with the goal of providing training at one’s own pace, on demand, and from anywhere on any Zachry-connected device. Lynette Garcia, LMS coordinator, serves as the administrator of the software applications utilized for LMS e-learning. In January 2018, LMS launched its first compilation of courses — the Lynette Garcia Project Engineer Program. Currently in the works is a Major Operations Program, as well as a New Hire Program for Home Office, East Coast and Gulf Coast employees. Lynette plans to work with subject matter experts to develop and add training courses related to Operations, Equipment, Safety, IT, and How-to videos for all Construction employees.

Children’s Hunger Fund On July 14, volunteers assembled Food Paks that are distributed across the San Antonio community to those in need.

Quilt Raffle in November The Zachry Quilting Zs will be selling raffle tickets for their 2018 quilt, “South for the Winter.” The money raised purchases supplies to make donation quilts. Last year, 98 quilts were donated to SAMMinistries shelter for children transitioning into new homes.

SIX EMPLOYEES RECEIVE TOP-LEVEL SAFETY AWARDS FROM PRESTIGIOUS MINING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION It’s no secret that Capitol Aggregates’ greatest strengths rest with its people. To ensure that its miners are protected, the company is committed to making safety a top priority in the mines.

This year, six individual employees were recognized by Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association (JAHSA) for their commitment to safety and multiple decades free of injury. Founded in 1916, in honor of the late Joseph A. Holmes, JAHSA is a nonprofit organization that promotes safety in the mining industry, and is composed of representatives from government entities and mining organizations.

“Holmes was the first director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, and his commitment to professionalism in mining is carried out by local chapters of JAHSA to encourage ‘safety first’ – a term he coined,” said Capitol Aggregates Director of Safety and JAHSA Hill Country Chapter President Chuck Ross. “We’re proud of our employees’ commitment to safety, and their decades of professionalism are made evident by their recent recognitions.”

JAHSA honored five Capitol Aggregates employees with the Double-Diamond Award, the highest level of recognition by the organization, for more than 40 years in mining without injury.

Recipients from the Cement Plant include: Randy Arguijo, 40 years Omar Castro, 42 years Mike Labau, 42 years Adolfo Gomez, 43 years Vernon Tschoepe, 43 years The organization also honored Donald Crisp with the Diamond Award, the second highest level of recognition, for 30 years of service without injury. Crisp worked in Medina River and now works at the Poteet Aggregate Plant.

ZACHRY MENTORS YOUNG TALENT TO BRIDGE SHORTAGE OF SKILLED CRAFT WORKERS AND PROFESSIONALS The construction industry is currently experiencing a shortage of skilled craft and professional workers. We must proactively reach out to our future workers in new ways. Zachry Construction Corporation successfully started to reach out for skilled craft workers through our partnership with the Construction Careers Academy. This engineering high school internship program will begin our journey to address the shortage of young professionals.

The Zachry Corp Career Exploration Program for Dreamers is for students who have an interest in engineering and would like to find out what opportunities are available for them in the construction industry. Participants of this eight-week program will explore new ways of collecting, analyzing and distributing the data through research programs that will be used on future projects. We will be leveraging the IoT (Internet of Things) using raspberry pi sensors built by the students using 3D printers. Data capture with Smart Glasses, laser scanners, unmanned aerial vehicles and 360 cameras. Information delivery and collaboration with Bluebeam, augmented reality, mixed reality, enhanced reality and virtual reality. Introduction of processes like mind mapping, task management, team based problem solving, estimating and CPR first aid certification allows the participants to take away skills to assist in school and life.

We completed this program on August 17 and one of the interns started working with our estimating team on Monday August 20, while she is attending UTSA.

“We’re working with young people to expose them to the construction industry as they begin to think about their professional interests and plan their college careers,” said Zachry Corporation Senior HR & Traning Manager Abel Luna. “The benefi t is two-fold: students get hands-on experience to help guide their professional path, and the company decreases the labor gap by training and recruiting interested students.”

ZACHRY’S FIRST COOK-OFF Congratulations to the Capitol Aggregates team for taking first place in the Fajita Cookoff Contest and to the Hospitality team for the Best Salsa! The first Cook-off took place at the Home Office on Friday, May 18. Teams from Capitol, Construction and Hospitality set up in the parking lot and were ready for employees who had saved their appetites for this occasion. Local San Antonio firefighters judged the competition while a local musician and Capitol employee, Rusty Winters, entertained the crowd.

ACT OF KINDNESS SPARKS GRATITUDE Rob Eckert, field engineer on the NC-55 project in Durham, NC, was working with a surveyor when he noticed a plume of smoke on the exit ramp by the bridge. He saw an elderly couple standing at the side of the road and went over to them. Their car was on fire. He noticed they were scared, so he stayed with them to make sure everyone stayed safe while police and the Durham Fire Department dealt with the fire.

The woman, Linda Pandoff, was traveling to New Jersey with her brother so he could receive special medical treatment when their car broke down. Linda was so moved by Rob’s actions, she contacted Zachry. “I wanted to let you know what kind of employee you hired,” said Pandoff. “He stayed with us until the fire was out. He was the only one who stopped to help us. He was kind and patient and made sure we had a ride. He even offered to pay for an Uber ride for us. You hired an outstanding person.”

Katrina is recording the time each task takes for the first girder set over Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) on the California High Speed Rail Project. Each girder was picked from the truck, ducked between the cranes, landed, and temporarily braced on the abutments. Then the cranes repositioned behind the abutments, picked up the girder again and set it into its final position. Each girder is 6’6” tall, 152’ long, and weighs 91 tons.
