Greetings Lakeside, I am writing this article and looking outside at the wonderful sunshine and temperatures that are 70+ degrees here at the end of January. I don’t know about you, but while I love these warm temperatures, I have to worry about what they mean for our environment. It is not supposed to be 70 degrees in January. Will the cold temperatures catch up to us later or are we seeing major changes in our weather because we have not taken care of our environment. I pray God will take care of this vessel we call earth. Our Leadership and Planning Retreat on January 28 was a success. Over 40 people attended the Saturday morning event that started with breakfast provided by the United Methodist Men. The group played the Quadrilateral Game to learn about being United Methodist. Derek Smith gave a challenging devotion to get us started. We then created a list of “2017 Accomplishments” which is included in this newsletter in a separate article. We talked about some goals for 2017 which included increasing our average attendance with our theme of “Come and See, Go and Tell.” We saw a video on “The E-Word (Evangelism)” and then everyone moved into their committees to plan and set calendar dates. Upon return to the whole group, they printed their dates on a master calendar, shared what they had planned and we closed with a devotional from Henry Bockus and prayer by Pastor Randy. A special moment of the day was the recognition of our Finance Chair, Bob Alexander, for his planning and work that paid off our 2016 apportionments in August of 2016. Bob was presented a plaque. We all look forward to a prosperous and ministry filled year. We start our February with ways to help others. You can buy blankets for Church World Service for $5 in honor of your Valentines and have a Valentines message to give to those special persons. Also, Warm Fuzzies will be appearing on our pews this month as you bring in new stuffed animals. We will love them and pray over them before we hand them over to OKC EMSA who will then give them to the children they pick up who are sick or have been in an accident. At the end of the month, we will begin a Lenten Bible Study on Sunday’s after church. It is going to be another busy month. Have a wonderful month and Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone.

-Pastor Randy

Lakeside UMC Book Club Invitation

WARM FUZZIES

An open invitation to anyone of any age interested in reading interesting and diverse books. Each book discussion is led by a different leader and contributions are made by all. We meet once a month on Monday from 6 to 7 pm in the Lakeside Parlor. We welcome and encourage anyone interested in joining us. Below you will find the reading list and dates for this next session.

The entire month of February, Lakesiders are asked to bring brand new teddy bears and stuffed animals for EMSA to carry in their ambulances so children will have a cuddle toy to accompany them in a time of crisis. The children will get to keep the animals as their own, which is why this is an on-going mission among OKC churches. Each Sunday in February, Lakeside UMC members are asked to bring “Warm Fuzzies”. Our goal this year is 200 Warm Fuzzies. Members will hold and instill love in these animals and prayers for the children, before they are sent on to EMSA. EMSA has asked that, if you are not feeling well or think you may be contagious, please do not hold a Warm Fuzzie that day. Thank you for sharing your love with so many others!

Monday, February 13 – Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay Monday, March 20 – Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline Monday, April 10 – When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi Monday, May 15 – The Blind Man’s Garden by Nadeem Aslam These books can be found in the Metropolitan Libraries or purchased at book stores or on Amazon.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY

During Lent we will offer a Bible study on Sundays after morning worship. We will use Adam Hamilton’s study “24 Hours that Changed the World.” No single event in human history has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. In this study, Hamilton will help you experience and understand the significance of Jesus’ suffering and death. He retraces the day that changed human history as he guides us through the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life in his easy to understand style that speaks to both long time and new Christians. There will be as sign-up sheet on the board behind the sanctuary and a cost of $10 for the book. We will begin on Sunday, Feb. 26.
