Greetings Lakeside, As I write this article enjoying the unseasonably cool August weather, I can only think about the hurting people in Texas who are losing their homes and their lives to the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Harvey. They say it is a 400 or 500 year flood. This reminds us of the power of nature. I am always shocked when people ask the question “How can God do this to people?” I simply remind you that we worship a loving and caring God, and God does NOT do this to people. There are rules of nature that have been in place since the beginning of time, and when certain weather patterns collide, thankfully only once in 400+ years, this is the result. I do know that our God is hurting with these people and standing by them. It is my prayer that most have evacuated to dryer areas and that those who could not are being helped by emergency personnel. I also believe that God is a part of the heroics that we have seen in this emergency.

I know that as we watch the unfolding drama happening in Texas, we feel helpless to do anything. However, prayer is far from doing nothing to support these people. God does hear our prayers! It also remains important that we keep things going in our country by doing our jobs and caring while the rebuilding begins. I will keep you informed of any opportunities that might present themselves through the church for you to lend aid. However, we will begin this Sunday to accept financial donations to UMCOR for Hurricane Harvey. We will collect this over several Sunday’s with the knowledge that there are members out of town for the holiday. There is also a message included in this newsletter from UMCOR on 5 ways you can help. We were filled with joy to welcome Stephen & Jenny Clark to our membership family and Mae Elizabeth to our baptism roll in August. We had a wonderful Blessing of the Backpacks as school began and who can forget all the spectacular talent shared at our Family Sundae Sunday. Thank you to all who participated and/or made ice cream. As we move into September, we will have Heritage Sunday on September 10 that includes recognizing past member Ellie May and current member Dean Hoel. The day will include a baked potato lunch. Christian Education Sunday will be on September 24. Let us begin our fall in a wonderful way as we settle into this season of ministry.

Blessings, Pastor Randy

Please remember that we share our space with others in the community and within the ministries of the church. If you use a space please remember to leave it cleaner than you found it and ready for the next group. No plan is complete until it includes a clean up crew. We have limited staff and resources and we want to be good stewards. Here are some important guidelines...

Did you know that YOU can help keep the cost of Lakeside’s utilities down in the following ways? • Keeping lights off in unused rooms. • Keeping all sanctuary doors completely closed when not in use as it has a separate heat and air system that has been set by a timer.

* Do not leave left over food at the church

• Keeping the parlor room thermostat set to off when not in use and close the door as it also has a separate heat and air system.

* Clean and put away all dishes * Wipe off couter tops, tables & equipment used

• Tu r n i n g t h e t h e r m o s t a t b a c k to the temperature it was set at before you leave the building.

* Launder or shake off tableclothes as needed * Clean up messes or litter on floors as needed * Take the trash out before you leave.

The Trustees greatly appreciate your help!!

There will be a Nurture & Care Luncheon on September 7th at 11:30 am. The luncheon will be held at Oklahoma Station

We are collecting food for Lakeside’s food pantry! All food should be non-perishable, and can be dropped off at the office. There is still a need in this community for food. People still come to the office and ask for food, and often times we don’t have much to give. Thank you for considering donating food to Lakeside’s food pantry!

Our church is growing and we want it to always make a positive impression on our visitors. Whether its on Sunday or during the week. Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

September 18th: SPRC Meeting at 7:00 pm.

We also collect used eyeglasses for Skyline. So bring your old eyeglasses and your friends’ and relatives’ old eyeglasses, and place them in the top right drawer of the west entry credenza.

We are collecting Labels and Box Tops for Education. Please save your UPC Codes now instead of lables!

While we await the response and recovery needs from the aftermath of Harvey, UMCOR suggests there are 5 things you can do: 1. Please continue to pray for those whose lives have been impacted by hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. Please also pray for the Early Response Teams, disaster coordinators, and many volunteers in The Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church, Río Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church and Central Texas Conference who are working tirelessly to provide relief after Harvey. 2. Make relief kits http://www.umcor.org/…/Relief-S…/Relief-Supply-Kits/Cleaning (Cleaning Buckets) 3. Give to UMCOR’s relief and recovery efforts: https://secure3.convio.net/…/SPageNaviga…/umcor_donate.html… 4. Donate only those items requested. 5. Please wait for an invitation to volunteer.

It has been a wonderful summer at Lakeside with many church community activities! The Music Department is gearing up for a great kick-off on the first Wednesday of September and our assistant music director, Ivan Wong, and I are excited to be back in business!

We will begin accepting financial donations to UMCOR for Hurricane Harvey this Sunday, September 3rd. We will collect money over several Sundays so that everyone has the opportunity to give if they should choose to.

We are looking forward to our baked potato fund raising event immediately following the service on Sunday, September 10th, in conjunction with our Heritage Sunday celebrations. This is a very special day that you will not want to miss, so mark your calendars for this special date! Donations are requested toward support of our music department, as there are always items for which we are in need. We have room in our Chancel Choir and in our Bell Choir to add your talent. If you are a beginner or a professional, we have a place for you. Our Christmas cantata has already been chosen and we will begin working on that soon, so come be a part of Lakeside’s wonderful music department! Thank you so much for your support of our music department and your encouragement to Ivan and myself as your music directors! Prayerfully, Aiya Attaway Kelley
