Greetings Lakeside, It is very hot outside! Of course that is not a surprise for July and August in Oklahoma. As this newsletter comes out, many children and youth will begin school for the 20172018 school year. Administrators and teachers are preparing for their classes and trying to figure how to survive on less money. It is important that we pray for this school year. I have just finished the summer sermon series about Old Testament Heroes. I hope it was as meaningful to all of you hearing this series as it was for me to prepare the sermons. There are so many to choose from, but I only shared eight heroes. That is why we are having one more day of heroes from the Bible. The sermon on Sunday, Aug. 6, will be created as it goes. I am asking all of you to come that morning with at least one of your Bible Heroes in mind and be ready and willing to share who is your Bible Hero and why. I think this will be a fun and meaningful way to conclude the summer series. Also in August, we will have our annual “Blessing of the Backpacks.” All students, even pre-school students, are encouraged to bring the backpack they will use for school this year to our August 13 worship service. School Administrators and Teachers should also bring their briefcases. During the service we will call them forward and bless the backpacks and school year and give each a gift to remind them that they are loved by the people of Lakeside UMC. We will give Gaye and Scott a vacation from our Wednesday Dinner and Game Night and replace it on Sunday evening, Aug 20, with our first Sundae Sunday Talent Show. I cannot wait to see all the talent that we have in this church. This event is for all ages and we will cheer on everyone who accepts the challenge to perform, young and old alike. All the new banners look great in our sanctuary. Thank you to Megan DeCastro and everyone who donated to add these reminders of our Savior. Our fall ministries are just around the corner and I pray you will find ways to be supportive and helpful in all the ministries we do. It takes all of us to make this church meaningful and vital. Sunday school classes need your help, especially our growing children’s ministries. There will be mission opportunities, family opportunities, and book and Bible Studies. While worship is an integral part of our ministry and family, getting connected to the church in ways other than worship is also essential to the health of this wonderful congregation! Blessings, Pastor Randy

LAKESIDERS HELPING LAKESIDERS

If you have a small project around your house that needs tending to, please fill out one of the Helping Hands cards found in the pews or on the table in the hallway. You may return the card to Pastor Randy or place one of the Prayer boxes located on the Sanctuary walls just before the side exit doors. While some tasks may be too big, no task is too small! Don’t be afraid to ask!

CHHS Freshman Orientation

Capitol Hill High School and Rhonda McGuire would like to thank Lakeside United Methodist Church for all of the cookies made and brought for this event!

There will be a Nurture & Care Luncheon on August 20th at 11:30 am. The luncheon will be held at Macaroni Grill

Who is your bible hero?

On August 6th the congregation will be doing the sermon. You are encouraged to talk about your favorite hero of the Bible, and why that hero is your favorite. Come to church prepared to talk about your favorite Bible hero!

Family Night- Sunday, August 20th at 5:30 P.M. There will be a light supper, homemade ice cream, and a talent show. Everyone (including children and youth) are encouraged to participate in the talent show. You can join with someone and share your talent together. Be a part of the fun-whatever your talent might be! This event will take the place of the regular dinner/game night in August.

We are collecting food for Lakeside’s food pantry! All food should be non-perishable, and can be dropped off at the office. There is still a need in this community for food. People still come to the office and ask for food, and often times we don’t have much to give. Thank you for considering donating food to Lakeside’s food pantry!

Did you know that YOU can help keep the cost of Lakeside’s utilities down in the following ways? • Keeping lights off in unused rooms. • Keeping all sanctuary doors completely closed when not in use as it has a separate heat and air system that has been set by a timer. • Keeping the parlor room thermostat set to off when not in use and close the door as it also has a separate heat and air system. • Tu r n i n g t h e t h e r m o s t a t b a c k to the temperature it was set at before you leave the building.

Please remember that we share our space with others in the community and within the ministries of the church. If you use a space please remember to leave it cleaner than you found it and ready for the next group. No plan is complete until it includes a clean up crew. We have limited staff and resources and we want to be good stewards. Here are some important guidelines... * Do not leave left over food at the church * Clean and put away all dishes * Wipe off couter tops, tables & equipment used * Launder or shake off tableclothes as needed * Clean up messes or litter on floors as needed * Take the trash out before you leave.

The Trustees greatly appreciate your help!!

We are collecting Labels and Box Tops for Education. Please save your UPC Codes now instead of lables!

Our church is growing and we want it to always make a positive impression on our visitors. Whether its on Sunday or during the week. Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

We will be blessing the backpacks on Sunday, August 13th during worship. Students, including pre-school are encouraged to bring their backpacks to church on that Sunday. School administrators and teachers are also asked to bring their briefcases. The congregation will be praying over the backpacks in hopes that the blessings will follow the students to school.

The Hearing Loss Association is hosting an ice cream social on August 5th from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at Lakeside UMC. If you are interested in learning more about hearing loss, you are encouraged to come and meet people and eat ice cream.

There will not be a Wednesday Dinner & Game night in the month of August. Sundae Sunday/ Talent Show is taking place of the regular Wednesday Dinner & Game night.
