Clavin Eliminates Dozens of “Take Home” Government Vehicles,

By Removing Expensive “Perk,” Town Projected to Save $616K Leading up to his election as Hempstead Town Supervisor, Don Clavin made a public promise to eliminate many “take home” town vehicles in an effort to generate significant savings the long term.

Surrounded by dozens of vehicles that were formerly used by staffers to commute to and from work, Clavin announced that he is committed to reducing the costly practice as part of his agenda to make Hempstead Town’s government more cost effective and efficient. Joining Clavin at the press conference was Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., and Town Clerk Kate Murray.

The keys to over 40 cars and trucks have been turned in as the first phase of his administration’s new policy, which will drastically curtail the use of takehome vehicles by Hempstead’s municipal managers. The staffers who were assigned these vehicles had previously

been authorized to drive them from their home to work and vice versa, in addition to utilizing them during the workday.

“I’m pleased to terminate the use of dozens of vehicles for commuting purposes by government employees,” Clavin said. “While I recognize the need for using certain government vehicles

during work hours, my priorities include reducing the cost of government services for taxpayers in our township.

Accordingly, I am drastically curtailing the use of take-home vehicles, which will offer real taxpayer savings.”

Clavin unveiled details of his plan for the take-home cars, in an effort to save money and enhance government effi-

ciency and accountability. The Supervisor’s agenda includes: In an effort to enhance governmental efficiency, consolidating 19 of the 40 rescinded “take-home” cars into departmental “pool” vehicles.

• These cars would be accessible only to authorized employees during work hours or emergency situations. The “pool” vehicles will be stationed at designated town facilities. By pooling vehicles, the town is projected to save $154,000 over five years.

• Selling or repurposing the remaining 21 “take home” vehicles in an effort to generate a projected savings of $462,000.

• By taking these steps to eliminate all take-home cars, the town is projected to save $616,000 over five years.

“By removing many of the town’s ‘take-home’ vehicles from the road, we’re also eliminating a major burden on our taxpayers,” Clavin said.

Savings realized through the elimination of take-home vehicles are comprised of several different factors. Re[CONT. ON PAGE 3]

Nassau County Parties Announce 2020 Slate

The Nassau Democrats and Republicans held Designating Conventions for the 2020 slate of candidates.

Long Island Republican leaders are backing Andrew Garbarino as their candidate to run for 2nd Congressional District seat vacated by Peter King.

Nassau Republican Chairman Joseph Cairo said, ”Andrew Garbarino has the credentials, experience and priorities to be the next congressman in the second district.” And “his Islip base is very much a swing area" in the congressional district. Garbrino has been the Assemblyman representing the 7th District since 2012. Mike LiPetri, Republican Assemblyman from District 9, will be challenging Garbarino in the primary.

Meanwhile, the Nassau Democrats nominated former Babylon Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon to vie for the 2nd Congressional District seat hoping turn the seat from red to blue.

duction of fuel costs, wear-and-tear on vehicles, reduced maintenance and repair costs, reduction of liability risks which result in settlement of accident claims are among the areas of cost savings. Additionally, Clavin pointed out that the town will realize revenues through the sale of some of the unneeded cars, SUVs and trucks that will no longer be used for take-home and onthe-job tasks.

The elimination of “take-home” cars represents another promise kept by Clavin in his first month in office as Hempstead Town Supervisor. On “Day 1,” in office, Clavin achieved his goal of to slashing the Supervisor’s office payroll in half. Clavin’s Supervisor’s staff will total $900,000 in salaries, which is

Senator John Brooks (D) representing District 8 is serving his second term, and will be challenged by Nicholas La Lota designated by the Nassau and Suffolk Republican and Conservative Committees to be their candidate for NYS Senate (SD-8). $1 million less than the previous Supervisor’s bloated $1.9 million in budgeted salaries for 2020.

A comprehensive review of all vehicles within the town’s fleet will be ongoing, including an assessment of usage and necessity. Combining the $1 million savings in the Supervisor’s budget and his successful start to the elimination of take-home town cars, Clavin intends on investing that money into quality-of-life initiatives, such as roadway repairs and improvements.

“The message is plain and simple,” stated Clavin. “Government must operate more efficiently and cost effectively, and I am committed to efforts such as this, which will offer genuine taxpayer savings to residents of America’s largest township.”

Caring and Sharing As I reflect on events covered in this issue of Your NewsMag I’m reminded of how special our community is to live, work and play. Today, it is common to travel far and wide for eduction and exploration providing opportunities to pick a new place to call home.

But it’s fairly common for those that grew up here to find their way back home to Merrick and Bellmore. Perhaps its because of the good nature and caring spirit shown by our teachers, business owners and community members.

Teachers and administrators in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District participated in the “Faculty Follies” to raise money for the district Community Cupboard. They put personal time and effort towards giving back to our community and showing the students the importance of volunteerism and helping families. Families responded to the teachers in kind, by filling the auditorium and cheering them on while watching fabulous performances by the talented staff.

Our business community chamber members work tirelessly to bring family fun and memorable holiday event to our towns. Each year Merrick and Bellmore chambers celebrate the installation of new board members and hold award ceremonies recognizing business and community members that have gone an extra mile to make a difference. Find out who was selected as this years honorees and remember to shop locally to support those that make our community special.

Lifelong Merrick-Bellmore residents Matt and Sheila Kuschner have always been a perfect match.

From their first blind date to a happy life together, nobody could have guessed that Sheila would wind up donating a lifesaving kidney to her husband Matt.

They share their story with Your NewsMag readers in hopes that others will consider kidney donation.

We have a wonderful community but one of the

burdens of living here are the high taxes and wondering where those dollars are being applied. New Town Supervisor, Donald X. Clavin is keeping true to his promise and cutting expensive perks like take home government vehicles and excessive payroll expenses to put tax dollars towards improving the quality of life for Town of Hempstead residents.

A Perfect Match Matt and Sheila Kuschner met on an old-fashioned blind date that was arranged by family members in 1986. Although they are both Kennedy alums, Matt graduated high school three years before Sheila graduated. The two did not know each other upon meeting and despite wishful thinking; no one could have known how great a match these two would truly be.

Reflecting on his memory of their first date in the 1980’s, Matt shared with Your News Mag, that the two enjoyed dinner followed by drinks at Aspens, a popular bar which was a frequented destination at that time on Merrick Road near Mill Pond. That date was the beginning of a love story that today, is even stronger than ever. Matt and Sheila married and like many others who grew up in the Merricks and Bellmores, they settled in the area buying a house and raising a family here. They remained active Kennedy alumni and lived a self-described wonderful life with friends and family in the neighborhood in which they share lifelong memories.

Then, about three and a half years ago, they were confronted with devastating news. Matt was diagnosed with chronic stage 4-kidney disease. He was living with only 25% kidney function. Hoping to avoid dialysis Matt followed doctors’ orders in an effort to keep his hypertension and kidney function under control.

Yet, this May his kidney function was at a dangerous low of 13% and his search for a lifesaving kidney began. A team of dedicated staff at New York-Presbyterian/ Columbia University Medical Center helped Matt and Sheila understand the procedure and the process of searching for and finding a donor. Upon discovering that she could be a potential donor, Sheila underwent a wide range of tests to determine her eligibility and to ensure she was healthy enough to endure the subsequent surgery. As some hoped, but could never have known to what extent, Sheila was a perfect match for Matt!

Sheila was able to give her husband a life-sustaining gift, her kidney.

On January 15, 2020 the couple underwent the kidney transplant procedure.

They are now home, feeling well and on their way to an expected full recovery.

Sheila told Your NewsMag that she was thankful to be a match for her husband.

Therefore, she wanted to share her experience with laparoscopic nephrectomy kidney donation and recovery in an effort to encourage others to donate a lifesaving kidney to someone anxiously awaiting a match.

Sheila and Matt continue to write their happily every after love story as they look forward to many more wonderful years together. Sheila plans to return to her position in April as a kindergarten teacher at H.D Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick. Matt is a retired chiropractor on temporary leave from his current position at Traveler’s Insurance in Melville.

Many love matches today result from apps and algorithms, but for Matt and Sheila, their perfect match is a testament to old- fashioned human instinct and modern science.

Calhoun’s Reza Aziz Advances To Final Round Of Poetry Out Loud Reza Aziz, a junior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, participated in the regional competition of Poetry Out Loud at Nassau Community College on Feb. 7, earning first place in the entire competition.

The winning poem he recited was “Prayer Rug” by Agha Shahid Ali. Calhoun student Sara Antin also competed at the regional competition. English teachers Irene Ritaccio and Catherine Arresto helped both students prepare for this highly competitive event.

It was Ritaccio who encouraged Reza to start participating in the competition three years ago.

“She was always very supportive, as well as my English teacher, Sal Salerno,” Reza added.

Reza won an award and gift card and will be competing in the state fi-

nals at FIT University in Manhattan on March 7 for a potential $1,000 grant and $500 for the school.

The Avocado Lesson How to design a kitchen now that will be long- lasting

By Randi Satnick Spring is typically the season when new homeowners and others plan the renovation of their kitchen spaces. So, now would be the time to consider what has worked in the past, what remains current and what new ideas and materials won’t become the avocado lesson of tomorrow. Some of us lived through the avocado era and saw the error of our ways. Others were told of the ghastly visual and yet, others unearthed it when peeling away layers of an older kitchen in need of resurrection. The avocado design trend began in the 60’s and lasted into the 70’s.

While not a bad run for a trend, it is the type of mistake kitchen designers of today vow to avoid.

In fact, a well-seasoned designer of any space deciphers between trends that will make a long-lasting mark and those that will be fleeting. When designing a kitchen of today, one should already be thinking of tomorrow. The investment in a new kitchen is too high and the stakes too great to be pigeon-holed into an era or to make an error in judgment. With kitchen renovations ranging from $25,000 to $75,000 and more it is smart to think long term.

Technology for smart kitchens of the

future will seemingly evolve faster than boiling water in an instant hot pot. Appliance World notes, “From your dishwasher texting you when a cycle is complete to your phone being programmed to preheat your oven before you get home, smart appliances are here and only becoming more prevalent.” The trend toward ease and acces-

However, what will remain much the same are kitchen staples such as cabinets, countertops and backsplashes. It is the finishes of these utilitarian items that will determine style and longevity.

“Even with the popularity of the white kitchen, “veteran interior designer Patricia Salcedo of III View Design, explains, “I like to mix it up for my clients. I avoid the pitfall of the cookie-cutter kitchen or the kitchen that will look dated in a few years because materials are specific to a trending color, shape or style.” Salcedo knows for instance that there are many whites from which to choose a painted cabinet. Perhaps you don’t choose the whitest or brightest. Salcedo mixes metals in her finish choices, again, so a space doesn’t become dated when a selection is no longer the finish of the day. Cambria, a large manufacturer of quartz products often used for countertops and backsplashes, continually introduces new style options. To com-

memorate the 20th anniversary of Cambria, new introductions bridge the gap between trending designs and timeless options. One such quartz surface brings warm veining as an answer to the cool grays of Carrera marble that are still popular. Carrera marble also gets an overhaul in another selection that breaks up the long, sleek veining into a mosaic design.

While trends are fun and make designing with the fresh and new difficult to resist, like avocado, trends get stale and can spoil a space that should look great for years to come. Patricia Salcedo of III View Design, suggests incorporating trends that can easily be changed. Salcedo recommends upholstery, accessories or paint as a vehicle for trendy design concepts. Trends like avocado turn into avocado toast; they will eventually disappear. So, while the personalization of a kitchen for both function and design are key to customer satisfaction, Salcedo cautions to keep timelessness in mind when selecting finishes. The lesson learned should be about creating something to sizzle on the stove or around the table, not something that’s bound to fizzle out.

10 Doctor-Recommended Tips Mental Health Wellness Week for Improved Overall Health Four in 10 adults in the U.S. have two or more chronic diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While certain conditions and risk factors are beyond one’s control, there is no shortage of lifestyle choices you can make for improved health.

“It’s always the right time to consider your personal goals and how you can make positive health choices,” says American Medical Association (AMA) President Patrice A. Harris, M.D. “The good news is that there are a few easy steps you can take that will set you on the right track.”

To get you started, the AMA is offering 10 wellness tips: 1. Steps you take now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk by taking the self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org.

2. Be more physically active. Adults should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

3. Visit LowerYourHBP.org to better understand blood pressure numbers and take necessary steps to get high blood pressure – also known as hypertension -- under control. Doing so will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

4. Reduce your intake of processed foods, especially those with added sodium and sugar. Eat less red meat and processed meats, and add more plantbased foods, such as olive oil, nuts and seeds to your diet. Also reduce your consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and drink more water instead.

Drinking sugary beverages -- even 100% fruit juices -- is associated with a higher all-cause mortality risk, a new study published in JAMA Network Open suggests.

5. If your health care professional determines that you need antibiotics, take

6. If consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink daily for women and two drinks daily for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

Students at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District recently spent time with trained and certified therapy dogs thanks to the nonprofit organization Therapy Dogs Long Island on Feb. 12.

In collaboration with Kennedy's Wellness Week, a Goldendoodle named Kheiron and his handler visited for a student "stress buster" where students were able to sit with, pet, and hold the dog for stress relief and mood improvement. Some of the other activities that students participated in during Wellness Wednesday included, mandala coloring, yoga and make your own stress ball.

“Studies show that dogs can help to improve mental and physical well-being, relieve anxiety, and improve learning and empathy,” said library media specialist Kristen Mogavero, a co-organizer of the event, along with math chair David Prince.

“This experience hit on all of the senses to initiate destressing,” added Prince.

“I am very grateful for the support of the administration in bringing the therapy dogs into school and being open minded towards opportunities that benefit our students,” added Mogavero.

Throughout the rest of the week, each grade level was able to participate in assemblies, including Cyber Safety and Social Media Use for ninth graders, Substance Abuse and Brain Development for tenth graders, Teen Mental Health and Coping Skills for eleventh graders and What to Expect in College for 12th graders.

Tips For Relieving Joint Pain The health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 30 minutes of exercise at least five times per week. However, high-impact exercises like running and weight training can lead to joint pain, especially if you have a joint condition.

The good news is that smart exercises with low impact can alleviate joint pain and deliver the same health benefits.

Here are a few tips to consider:

KEEP MOVING

Trying to protect your joints by not moving actually does more harm than good. Regular exercise can actually help joint pain and ease symptoms of chronic joint conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Faculty Follies To Raise Funds For Community Cupboard The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District annual faculty variety show, “The Faculty Follies” was an exciting night of entertainment and a fundraising events for the district’s food bank, the Community Cupboard .

The evening featured live performances by teachers representing each of the six schools as well as central & building administration. Students from the district’s Ambassador Program served as the emcees for the show. The Follies, now in its fourth year, included over 50 faculty members with everything from live music to comedy and dancing.
