Meet The Candidates Night

There were several questions from resi dents regarding specific reported instances of car theft, homelessness and a knife threat on the LIRR. One resident noted that the catch and release bail reform policy prevents people who may have mental illness and ad diction from ever seeing a judge and getting the help that they need. And, without proba tion, there is no way to monitor offenders.

The South Merrick Community Civic As sociation hosted their annual Meet the Candidates Night on Thursday October 27, 2022 at the Merrick Golf Clubhouse. Both democrat and republican candidates vying to serve our area in the NYS Assembly, NYS Senate and US Congress were invited to speak in order to convince us why they de serve our vote.

Each candidate was allowed to speak for a timed 8 minutes without interruption fol lowed by a few minutes of Q&A. The incum bent had the opportunity to choose to speak first or last. If there were no incumbent, the winner of a coin flip would determine the or der.

The evening began with candidates run ning for the 14th Assembly District. Incum bent Dave McDonough (R) offered for his opponent Dustin Ginsberg (D) to address the crowd of residents first. Ginsberg, who grew up in Merrick, said that he loves this community. When he was asked about crime and bail reform Ginsberg said, “I do not support Brooks opinion on bail reform. There should be more police and discretion belongs to the judges.”

Dave McDonough (R), current Assembly man for the 14th District, assumed office in 2013 and is running for re-election. He told the community members that he and his of fice staff follow the modo of “Help someone

today.” McDonough said that his office had over 500 calls a day from people that needed help getting Covid unemployment benefits. He also said that he is, “always willing to work across party lines to get done what is best for his constituents.”

Next up was Senator John Books (D), in cumbent for the 5th Senatorial District. He attended the meeting via zoom, as a safe measure, since one of his staff mem bers recently came down with Covid. There were several questions for Brooks regarding catch and release bail reform policies. Brooks said, “I did not support bail reform but voted for it because it was bundled with important state aid that was

Steve Rhoads (R), the current Nassau County Legislator, District 19 is running against Brooks for the 5th Senatorial District seat. Roads said, “I am running for State Senate to cut taxes on gas and commuting and to repeal pro-criminal policies like cash less bail that frees killers and dangerous thugs from jail. Public safety is on the ballot this Election Day.”

Anthony D’Esposito (R) and Laura Gillen (D) are competing for the 4th Congressional District seat. D’Esposito said, “I would like the handcuffs taken off the police and put them back on the criminals.” Crime, open boarders and the cost of living are of top pri ority.

Although Laura Gillen was planning on participating, she was not able to arrive in time to due to the heavy schedule candidates have prior to Election Day.

How to Create the Perfect Charcuterie Board for Your Holiday Party

Are you hosting a holiday party and looking for a simple way to impress your guests?

The Texas Roadhouse Butcher Shop is sharing steps for building an eye-catching and mouth-watering charcuterie board that will add color, flavor and variety to your holiday table.

1. Grab a platter or surface to display your charcuterie. Anything will work, even a simple cutting board. Just be sure to choose a size that you can fill completely.

2. Use dishes or ramekins of mis matched sizes, shapes and colors to hold dressings, toppings and sauces. This will keep your board clean and add fun visual details to the display.

3. Include two to four cheeses of con trasting flavors and textures to please all palates, and to complement other elements of the board. The varieties you select should represent these basic categories: hard cheese, (such as Char donnay Bellavitano) soft cheese, (such as brie) and blue cheese (such as French Roquefort).

4. While a traditional charcuterie board typically sticks with cured meats, the holiday season is the perfect occa sion for adding depth and richness to your feast with grilled meats, such as fi let, sliced into strips. Those from Texas Roadhouse Butcher Shop are lean, fla vorful, and melt in your mouth, making them a natural choice for a hearty holi day spread. Whether you are firing up the grill or preparing on a cooktop, al low any cooked meats to rest well be

fore adding them to your board.

5. No charcuterie board is complete without some crunch. Add two to three options like pita crackers, crusty breads or toasted baguettes that will stand up to the weight of your meats and chees es.

6. Now, add some brightness and sweetness to your board. Fresh fruits like blueberries, strawberries and green grapes, and preserves such as peach pepper jam, will add contrast to rich, salty meats and cheeses. Don’t forget seasonal sweets and treats like soft pep permints, peanut brittle, chocolate dipped pretzels and candied nuts.

7. You’ll want your charcuterie board to look as if it’s overflowing. So, as you’re building it out, start with the largest elements like the cheeses and meats first, followed by smaller items like crackers, fresh produce and sweets. Fill in any holes with sprigs of aromatic rosemary for trimming, along with ad ditional portions of the smaller items. The various elements of the board should pair well together, so it’s okay if they touch.

For additional hosting tips, or to shop for seasonal gifts and your holiday spread, visit trbutchershop.com. For 15% off your order, use the promo code PARTY15.

To wow your guests and their tastebuds, take your charcuterie board to the next level with seasonal treats, grilled meats and a cornucopia of sweet and savory flavors. ~ StatePoint

Using Family Volunteer Day to Deepen Children’s Civic Engagement

November 19, 2022 is Family Volunteer Day, a global day of service that em powers families to work together to support their com munities. Increas ingly, parents of young children are placing a larger fo cus on civic en gagement and giv ing back, and this annual event is a great way for your family to get started or strengthen your involvement.

Need some guidance? The following actions draw upon Points of Light’s Civic Circle, a framework that helps people understand the many facets of civic engagement and provides an op portunity to show children the variety of ways they can support causes they care about this Family Volunteer Day. Combine these ideas to engage your whole family, strengthen your com munity and amplify your efforts:

1. Volunteer. Hands-on action is al ways an impactful way to get involved, especially on Family Volunteer Day. Whether you find time to volunteer at a local organization or use one of Points of Light’s DIY project guides, there are plenty of options for families of all ages and abilities. Consider proj ects that focus on issue areas that chil dren can easily understand and get in volved with, such as food insecurity, animal welfare and climate change.

2. Donate. Most organizations need financial support to continue their op erations and deliver on their missions. Having a family fundraiser can be a great way to support an organization or cause. Whether you run a lemon ade stand, plan a virtual fundraiser, sell friendship bracelets or do some thing else creative, activities like these help youth learn planning skills and the value of supporting organizations financially.

3. Purchase Power. With the holiday season quickly approaching, gift giv ing is on many people’s minds. Have

young people help you select gifts from small local businesses or BI POC- or women-owned businesses. You can also find and support com panies that give back – either with a percentage of proceeds or by working sustainably.

4. Listen and Learn. A critical ele ment of civic engagement is listening to and learning from the community you hope to serve. Before taking ac tion, learn about what’s really needed. If you can’t talk to those directly im pacted, ask a local nonprofit organiza tion if they have suggestions or more information. You can also read books, listen to podcasts or watch documen taries about the causes you wish to support.

5. Use Your Voice. Helping kids find their voice is important because they can use it to harness their power in bringing awareness to important causes. Kids can share information by telling friends and family what they learned over a dinner, sharing a re port at school, or providing informa tion for others with an action item to take.

If you’re looking for tactical ideas, Points of Light’s website has fami ly-friendly toolkits for youth of all ag es that incorporates some of these el ements. Visit www.pointsoflight.org/ familyvolunteerday/ to find a project that’s right for you.

Family Volunteer Day can be just a starting point. Taking action and un derstanding the impact of your work can lead to a lifetime of civic engage
