f you pay taxes on property in Nassau County you have the right to appeal the property’s annual assessment. If you disagree with the most recent assessed value of your home as indicated on the 2023-2024 tentative notice of assessment you can file an application for correction by Monday, May 2, 2022. The Assessment Review Commission (ARC) will review your application. Kaleidoscope Gem & Mineral Show On Saturday, April 9th from 10am to 5pm and Sunday and April 10th from 10am to 4:30pm, the Gem & Mineral Show will be at the Freeport Recreation Center located at 130 E Merrick Rd in Freeport. Robert gives back to the community by offering an internship program to the local high school students providing guidance in developing rudimentary Autocad skills, basic drafting knowledge and professional office ethics. Robert is also a longtime supporter of St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital and the American Heart Association. Robert Alweis, PE, PC licensed professional engineer in NY, CT, NC and OH. Chatterton Fourth Graders Construct KIND Wall

ourth graders in Karin Frongillo’s class are really getting into their school work. They recently created a colorful KIND wall in the Chatterton School main hallway, where students can insert themselves as the “I” in KIND. The bulletin board came about after a monthlong celebration of kindness.

Student Success at LI Science & Engineering Fair Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District is proud to announce the achievements of three of its students at the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair. Chris Prainito of John F. Kennedy High School earned first place in the LISEF for his project, “Development of a Polydiacetylene-Based Paper Biosensor for Naked-Eye Detection of COVID-19 in Saliva.” The 12th grader will be traveling to Georgia May 7-13 to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair. Kennedy’s Michelle Brown, 12th grade, earned an honorable mention medal for her project, “The Concurrent Effects of Metformin and Dietary Restriction on Parkinson’s Disease in a Drosophila melanogaster Mode.” Sanford H. Kennedy REACH Team Named National Finalists The John F. Kennedy High School ITEEA REACH (International Technology and Engineering Educators Association) team received their poster award after being named finalists in the competition. This is the highest award the district has ever won in this national competition. They were challenged to create an adaptive and assistive device. They created a Thermal Kinetic Therapeutic Glove to help individuals with Raynaud’s Disease. The team won a STEM Grant, a gift card and STEM supplies. The REACH Challenge is an impactful Adaptive and Assistive Technology design thinking project for middle school, high school and college STEM programs. Teachers are provided a toolkit

Landscaping Tips for Instant Curb Appeal

ne of the best ways to achieve instant curb appeal, according to the experts, is to effectively layer shrubs, plants and flowers in your front yard. Doing so can create a cohesive visual experience that naturally guides visitors to the front door. Landscape designer Doug Scott describes plant layering in art terms: “Just like in a painting, you need to have a background, a middle ground and a foreground. Each layer serves a purpose, and there’s no more important place for them to be on full display than your home’s entrance.” To help homeowners understand the purpose of plant layering and identify the best types of plants for each layer, Scott has joined forces with Exmark, a leading manufacturer of commercial mowers and equipment for landscape professionals and serious DIY-ers. Here they break it down for you: 1. Background: The background layer should consist of taller evergreen shrubs to ensure that no matter what’s in front of them, you and your visitors will always have something green to look at. This layer provides a cohesive backdrop and a bit of living color in every season. 2. Middle Ground: Here’s where to step it down a notch in height and add interesting shapes, colors or stripes that provide contrast against the darker green of the background layer. Herbaceous perennials, like lavender, are a good choice for this purpose. 3. Foreground: Finally, the foreground layer should help transition the planting beds to your lawn space or sidewalk, and should therefore be lower than the back two layers. It’s also where you can keep things fresh and get your hands dirty throughout the year by changing out annuals with the seasons. Or, if you want a lower-maintenance entrance, you can choose smaller perennials, evergreens or creeping ground covers. Use the foreground layer as an opportunity

to add pops of color at ground level and draw attention to your home’s entrance. Scott lays out a few other important tips to keep in mind: • Choose plants consistent with your home’s style. For instance, if you have a craftsman home, you should probably skip tropical plants. Or, if your home is more minimalist, avoid an overabundance of different plants. • Don’t obstruct views of your front door from the street with plants. Likewise, visitors shouldn’t have to maneuver around plants as they make their way down the sidewalk. Neither is convenient or welcoming, so you’ll either need to keep pruning plants to size, or choose plants that won’t overgrow their space without a ton of pruning. • To make your entrance “the star” it should be, the plant material in the rest of your front yard shouldn’t be distracting. Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting Earns Excellence Award

he Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting program in the Central High School District has been named a 2022 Student Television Network Broadcast Excellence Award winner. The Broadcast Excellence award honors a select number of schools across the nation for their “student-produced programs that meet a standard of excellence. Programs are evaluated holistically based on one show entry, as well as the program’s website and social media channels.” “This award is STN’s highest honor as it recognizes not only the contributions of a select few students who may have worked on a single project, but instead celebrates the contributions of every member of the program,” explained Program Director Stu Stein. “It is quite remarkable that in only our sixth year in existence, BMB has joined 13 programs from across the country including pe-

rennial powerhouses like Carlsbad High School in San Diego and Christopher Columbus High School in Miami in winning this award.” This recognition is born from the hard work, passion, and dedication of current crop of amazing broadcasters who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to take all of the broadcasts from the weekly (Morning Announcements, Midweek Update and This Week at BMB) monthly (Talkin’ Cookies, Sports Talk and Film Festival) and live event coverage to a previously unimaginable level, he explained. “Getting to this point so quickly would not have been possible without the contributions of our first few classes and the work they did to get us to this point,” added Stein. “In just the short

Grind 6 lbs. of white fish then grind a small carrot and onion. Mixed it well. For every pound you add one egg. Each time you add an egg you mix well with the spoon. Intermittently add 1/2 cup of cold water. Keep mixing. Add about 2 tablespoons of Matzo Meal. The more you mix it in the less you need. Then add sugar, white pepper and salt to taste. Fill pot about 1/4 - 1/2 full of water. Add fish heads and some bones to the water. Slice an onion and two carrots cut on the diagonal. Add some salt, white pepper and sugar to the water. Make the fish patties oval then put them in the boiling water and cook about 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Delicious!!!

Add onions to the drippings in the skillet. Saute over medium heat until onions start to brown. Stir in garlic, and cook for 2 or 3 more minutes. Pour over the brisket in the Dutch oven. Empty one package of dry instant onion soup mix over the browned onions and meat. Arrange all of the apricots on top of the soup mix. Surround meat with carrots and potatoes then add water. Pour enough water around outside of meat, not on top, to cover the sides of brisket. Cover. Bake at 325 degrees F for 1 hour. Check liquid, if dish is starting to look dry, add a bit more water around the meat. Cover, and cook another hour. Remove lid, and stir apricots into gravy. Leave uncovered and cook for another hour. Stir gravy again and add more water if the gravy is too thick. Meat should be tender. If needed, bake for an additional 1/2 hour. cut across grain to serve. Brisket with Apricots Syndi Goldman-Reibman

6 pounds of Beef Brisket 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 4 onions chopped 2 lb. carrots 4 potatoes 2 (1 once) package dry onion soup mix 1 lb. dried apricots diced In a large heavy skillet, heat oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot, brown the beef on all sides. After searing, rub with onion soup mix then place meat in a large Dutch oven with a lid.

3 eggs ½ cup vegetable oil 1 cup sugar 3 Tablespoons water 2 cups chocolate chips ¼ teaspoon salt 1 cup matzo meal 1 cup matzo cake meal Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a bowl, beat eggs and sugar until lemon colored. Stir in oil and water. In another bowl, combine salt, matzo meal and cake meal. Then add in chocolate chips. Let the batter stand for 10-15 minutes. Grease cookie sheets (I use parchment paper instead). Divide batter into portions. Form into strips about 12” long and 1 ½ inches wide. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Brown lamb in olive oil in Dutch oven for 4 minutes each side and remove from pan. Saute 1 chopped onion, 2 cut carrots and 3 minced garlic cloves in same Dutch oven. Add in 2 tablespoons tomato paste, can of tomato sauce, 3 cups beef broth, 2 sprigs rosemary and salt & pepper. Put lamb back in pan. Cook about 2 -2 1/2 hrs at 350 degrees. Meat should fall off bone! Serve over rice, mashed potatoes, polenta

1 1/2 cups butter softened 2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 5 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp salt Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla and mix until combines. Add flour, baking powder and salt. Mix until combined. Roll dough out onto floured surface and cut into desired shapes. Bake at 350 degrees until light brown

10 Doctor-Recommended Ways to Improve Your Overall Health

hile investing in your health and wellness can sound like an overwhelming goal, doctors say that there are easy, tangible steps you can take to feel your best and better protect your health. “It is always the right time to consider your personal goals, and how you can make positive health choices,” says American Medical Association (AMA) president, Gerald E. Make sure your family is up-todate on their vaccines, including the annual influenza vaccine for everyone age six months or older and the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone age five and older. Learn your risk for type 2 diabetes by taking a simple online 2-minute self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. Steps you take now can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. 3. Be more physically active. Adults should do at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity. 4. Know your blood pressure numbers. If you are taking prescription opioids, follow your doctor’s instructions, store them safely to prevent diversion or misuse, and properly dispose of any leftover medication. 10. Manage stress.
