Hair Loss? Time To Grow New Hair

Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process, and seeking ways to curb this process is a challenge. There are many products on the market that claim to re-grow hair, but the results are mixed. Some work for some people, and for others, not so well.

Surgically transplanting hair has

come a long way over the past decade - to the point where follicular unit grafting (FUG) is now more widely accepted. It’s not like the old-style plugs people used to get.

These grafts are indistinguishable from your natural hair and are probably more durable than your natural hair in the long run.

While your natural hair still present on the top and front of your scalp may continue to thin or fall out, the

grafted hairs from the sides and back of your head are more likely to be there permanently.

The latest procedure for hair transplantation is follicular unit extraction (FUE), where each hair is harvested and individually placed in a new location on your scalp. By doing this there are no scars to deal with, and the procedure is more tolerable and may even be a little safer.

One of the first FUE devices to

YOU decide.

Virginia Hair Transplant is excited to announce our newest offering, NeoGraft®. NeoGraft® introduces the “state-of-the-art” solution for hair loss. This game changing technology automates the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to give patients more natural looking results with minimal downtime, no linear scaring and no stitches.

• It is the least invasive procedure for hair transplantation

• Patients who receive NeoGraft® feel little to no discomfort

• No stitches or staples are used in the NeoGraft® procedure

• No unsightly linear scar

• No numbness where the donor hair is harvested

• Quick recovery time

• Natural looking results

• Less restrictions on your normal daily activities

• Patients can typically go back to work the next day

• Flexibility for any hair style of your choice, short or long

Washingtonian

be cleared by the FDA for follicular unit harvesting and implantation is the NeoGraft® system, which delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technique in the hair transplant industry.

This system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles, which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. This automated hair transplantation system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only “no touch” implantation technology. It provides exact harvesting and placement, delivering natural looking results. This advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scarring, minimal downtime, and a shorter recovery period. Hair restoration with NeoGraft is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell.

How the Procedure Works:

Step One: Donor Hair Removal

The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone.

Step Two: Separation of the Follicular Units

Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate.

Step Three: Creation of the Recipient Sites

The hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he or she has designed specifically for you.

Step Four: Placement of the Hair Graft

The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. Grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Facelift Vs. Neck Lift

The Two Second Test To Know For Yourself!

One of the most common questions asked by patients is whether

they should opt for a facelift or a neck lift. These two procedures are related, hence the confusion. So, I ask my patients to place their fingers in front of their ears and pull up. If they like how their skin responds, this is a positive facelift sign. Then I ask them to place their fingers below their ears and pull back. If they like how their neck responds, this is the positive neck

lift sign.

Precision Tailoring For a Youthful Look

Ultimately, facelift or neck lift surgery is best understood from the perspective of tailoring. A tailor will remove excess fabric from a loose garment and use a seam for re-stitching. In a facelift, excess facial skin that has

stretched and sags, is removed in front of the ear. A natural contour line, like a seam, is used to close the incision. The utilization of natural contour lines is why facelift incisions are practically undetectable. In a neck lift, excess skin is removed behind the ears, allowing the neck skin to be pulled upwards. This helps re-establish the natural jawline of youth. A neck lift incision is hidden in the hairline behind the ear.

Combining Facelift and Neck Lift For Natural-Looking Results

Some patients desire for both facial rejuvenation and neckline improvement. In this case, a facelift is combined with a neck-lift. We often recommend this approach as we have seen patients from other providers suffer unnatural results when loose facial skin sags over tightened neck skin. Ultimately, there is no discrete anatomical boundary between a facelift and a neck lift. The skin of the face blends with the skin of the neck. Thus, most neck lifts will include a bit of the face and vice versa.

Understanding the Many Terms For Face and Neck Lifts

Despite our simple test for knowing the difference between a facelift and a neck lift, there are many terms for face and neck lift procedures. Some examples include the mini-face lift, short-scar facelift, weekend facelift, SMAS facelift, S-lift, deep plane facelift, full neck lift, and single incision neck lift. Many of these terms overlap, are anatomically vague, and thus can be intentionally confusing.

The key to understanding the various terms for a facelift or neck lift is that the facial and neck skin sit on top of muscles of facial expression. This muscular layer, called the ‘SMAS’ in the face or the ‘platysma’ muscle in the neck, are frequently addressed in facial aesthetic surgery. The platysma muscle can be released to relax turkey gobble neck bands. The platysma muscle can be tightened laterally to improve neck definition. The SMAS can be plicated to improve facial skin. Addressing the platysma or the SMAS is the key to a long-lasting face or neck lift as this decreases the tension on the facial and neck skin.

In conclusion, pull up in front of the ear: facelift. Pull back just below the ear: neck lift. And I hope you have an uplifting day!

Improve Your Health This New Year: Take Care Of Your Teeth

While we know eating right and tossing out the cigarettes are all part of our typical New Year’s resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle, many of us are not aware of the overall health benefits of taking good care of our teeth and gums.

Tooth decay, plaque and periodontal (gum) disease is a health problem that doesn’t normally get a lot of New Year’s resolution attention. In fact, many adults with gum disease are not aware of the diagnosis, symptoms or its lasting effects. Medical evidence concludes that poor oral health, gum disease, cavities, plaque buildup, etc., can contribute to other problems in the body.

The Causes and Symptoms Of Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support your teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis:

• gums become swollen and red due to inflammation

• teeth and gums often bleed while brushing

In the more serious form of periodontal disease — called periodontitis:

• gums pull away from the tooth as infection settles in

• supporting gum tissues are destroyed

• supportive jaw bone can be lost

• your teeth will loosen and eventually fall out

Diagnosing Periodontal Disease

Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the treatment and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease. They are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria as they receive extensive training in these areas during their three additional years of education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.

Make it your New Year’s resolution to take better care of your mouth and teeth.

Brush twice daily: Your mouth is the front line for battling the bacteria.

Floss daily: Your toothbrush can’t reach between your teeth. Daily flossing cleans the spaces between teeth.

Have at least two dental cleanings a year: Your dental hygienist supplements your daily brushing and flossing.

Get a regular annual dental checkup: Preventative dentistry is better for your health.

Visit a periodontist for gum evaluation: All adult patients should

and Gums

have a full periodontal exam with charting accomplished once a year. This provides you and your Dentist with a baseline measurement to record the pocket depth (space between your teeth and gums), the presence of gum disease, gum recession, bleeding, tooth mobility and plaque buildup.

Eat, drink and be wary: The enemy of oral health is the group of natural bacteria that thrive on sugar and dissolve the protective enamel covering the teeth.

Consider a new and stronger smile: Getting dental implants and crowns for missing or broken teeth isn’t a luxury; these problems may leave you with shifting teeth and a vulnerability to gum disease. Improving your dental health and preventing tooth decay can have a large health impact than just a healthy mouth and brighter teeth. Take control of your dental health and make an appointment with an experienced periodontist today.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Affects Your Entire Body

The human body is a truly remarkable thing. It is like a finely tuned machine when it runs well, but when it does not, then it really can mess up your life. The TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is an integral part of whole-body

health for all of us. When the disc within the jaw joint slips off the top of the jawbone (the condyle), it can and will pinch upon nerves and blood vessels in that area. And know that there are a lot of nerves and blood vessels traveling through the TM joints!

Displaced discs create an inflammatory reaction within our skull. This

can often lead to head and neck pain that can travel down and throughout the rest of the body. Osteopath doctors (along with TMJ specialists) are well aware that a slipped disc in the jaw can directly correlate to ACL problems in the knees. It may seem far fetched to some of our dear readers, but it is quite true.

An easier to understand concept is

Typical Dental Office

that if the discs are slipped off the condyles, this will cause an asymmetry to the jaw and it will tip to one side or the other. Then, the neck compensates by tipping as well, and over time this can lead to turning and twisting of the back. The importance of the TM joint cannot be understated. Your entire body depends on this little joint being symmetrical and with the discs in proper position. Otherwise, the whole body is affected.

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”

- D. Thomas

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”

- Susan

When there is a TMJ problem, quite often the neck is also out of alignment. This can contribute to OSA – obstructive sleep apnea – because a twisted neck tightens up the airway and reduces the ability of the body to breathe properly. Then you add on the inflammation in the joints and you end up with a very upset system. By treating the TMJ disorder, this helps to get the joints lined up more symmetrically, helps the discs to get back on the condyle where they belong, and helps the neck to line up better as well. All these can contribute to better sleep and better breathing.

One of the far less discussed aspects of TMJ disorder is a little thing called happiness. That’s right, if you have TMJ disorder you are far more likely to live with pain, lack of sleep, less ability to focus, and a whole host of other problems to deal with. And because of all the health problems associated with TMJ disorder, you are nowhere near as likely to be happy with your life.

As a TMD practitioner, every day of the week people come to the office and tell me how they now have their lives back. They can sleep better, focus better, have less pain and enjoy being with friends and family so much more. By wearing simple little devices in their mouth, they can function and feel better than ever before. This is what TMJ treatment can do for you.

Tips For a Healthy Smile This Holiday Season

times of hardship one can always find something to be thankful for. Since its creation Christmas has been benchmarked with togetherness of friends and family, and also the consumption of good food.

Although this season is a time usually celebrated with an assortment of savory and sweet foods, your oral health does not need to suffer. Below

are a few tips to follow during your holiday meals.

Avoid Constant Grazing –Constant nibbling throughout the day will cause the pH in your mouth to drop and gives a chance for bacteria to flourish. Frequent grazing will not allow your saliva to naturally cleanse your mouth and raise your pH back to healthy levels.

Drink Water With Your Meal – Drinking water and rinsing will allow for the cleansing of food particles that may remain in your teeth until you brush again at night. Increasing water intake is extremely important when consuming salty foods to prevent dry mouth. Drinking water may also raise the pH in your mouth to more healthy levels.

Avoid Dark Colored Foods – If you have been bleaching your teeth your teeth may be more susceptible to uptake of stain from dark colored foods and drinks. Our favorite dishes such as cranberry sauce may be mighty sweet and can also stain your teeth.

Avoid Sticky Foods – Sticky foods such as nuts, raisins, and pies can remain in the grooves of your teeth. If you have to get a taste make sure you rinse or brush afterward.

Bring a Toothbrush – If you are traveling this holiday season you may want to pack a toothbrush and floss with you to your final destination. After all with all of that food who knows when you will feel a nap coming on.

Don’t Forget To Floss – Just because they are called leftovers doesn’t mean food particles should be left behind between your teeth.

Ensuring Healthy Smiles and Sound Sleep For Your Child

Proper breathing during sleep is crucial for the overall well-being of children, yet many parents may not be fully aware of potential issues related to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD), which includes pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

SRBD refer to disturbances in normal breathing patterns during sleep, ranging from common snoring to more severe pauses in breathing known as

apnea events. These interruptions can lead to sleep deprivation and a variety of health complications. In the case of children, untreated SRDB can result in developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges, potentially leading to conditions like allergies, ADD/ADHD, and depression.

Pediatric OSA, a condition where the airway is partially or completely blocked during sleep, is often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids and a lack of tongue space. It differs from adult OSA, as it may manifest alongside behavioral issues and daytime sleepiness in children.

The Importance Of Proper Sleep and Open Airways For Children

During the first 18 months of a child’s life, crucial growth and developmental milestones occur, many of which are related to facial development. Ensuring proper breathing is essential for

8 Ways To Avoid Dry Hair This Winter

As much as we love sweater weather, pumpkin everything and blondes going back to the dark side, there is one thing that the cold weather is not good for and that is keeping our hair healthy and full.

There are several reasons our hair is drier in the winter and I’m here to help solve some of those problems.

First things first, get regular trims every 8-10 weeks. The best way to help prevent further breakage and split ends is to give your hair a fresh blunt edge. This will

keep existing split ends from running up the hair shaft and further damaging the cuticle.

Only use purple shampoo or clarifying shampoos once a month. Both products have purpose for sure but can be exceptionally drying when over used.

Bi-weekly deep conditioning treatments are important. Whether you do them at home or treat yourself in the salon, your hair will certainly thank you for it!

Keratin/protein treatments such as a Brazilian Blowout will also help. These treatments will add that keratin/protein back into the hair and physically seal the cuticle down around it resulting

in shiny, smooth goodness. Treatments also drastically cut down on dry time and frizz.

Wash your hair once or twice a week. When you wash your hair every day, your scalp learns to make more sebum (oil). If you’re currently washing every day, start by taking one wash at a time away so you and your scalp can get used to your new routine and use dry shampoo on your non-wash days.

Make sure to use salon quality products, including shampoo and conditioner. This can not be stressed enough. There is a black market for hair and skin products. Some online retailers will sell you the “same” product for less be-

cause although the packaging is the same, the product is literally watered down.

Use less heat. If you do use hot tools on your hair 1) always use a heat protectant and 2) give your hair a break on down days.

Lastly but certainly not least, use hair oil. If you’re thinking “My hair is too thin, it’ll look greasy!”, don’t worry. Even on fine and/or thin hair you can and should still be using a light oil such as Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil on your mids to ends, never at the root.

Your hair is the crown that you never take off so take care of it as such and it won’t go unnoticed.

As the New Year approaches, many of us focus on self-care, setting resolutions to improve our health and well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, taking care of both internal wellness and external appearance is more important than ever. What if you could do both? Beauty and wellness work best when addressed together in an integrative way.

Integrative wellness nurtures the whole self—body, mind, and spirit. It combines practices that enhance physical health, mental balance, and selfconfidence. Aesthetic services, such as skin treatments and body contouring, can boost confidence in our appearance, while internal health is key to a radiant, rejuvenated look. In the beauty and wellness industry, we find that optimal results are achieved when both aspects are addressed simultaneously.

For example, pairing IV infusions focused on hydration and nutrient replenishment with facial treatments can brighten and rejuvenate your skin. IV infusions deliver essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants directly into the bloodstream, nourishing your body from the inside out. This process boosts energy and mood, creating a glowing foundation on which any skin treatment can build. When the body is healthy and well-nourished, natural skin radiance is easier to achieve.

Integrative wellness also includes supplements and nutrition as tools for enhancing beauty and well-being. A wellness plan, guided by a qualified nutritionist, can include the right nutrients for glowing skin, strong hair, and a balanced body. Omega-3s support skin elasticity, while collagen peptides help maintain a firm, youthful complexion. With a focus on nutrients, we can amplify the effects of aesthetic treatments for a complete transformation—from the inside out.

Aesthetic treatments like laser skin rejuvenation, body contouring, and skin tightening provide the

finishing touches. Skin rejuvenation treatments are most effective when combined with hydration and nutrition, building on your skin’s natural health. Whether reducing signs of aging, addressing pigmentation issues, or contouring the body, these services are most successful when paired with a holistic wellness approach.

This New Year, consider setting health, beauty, and well-being goals that align with an integrative wellness approach. Embracing a lifestyle change that goes beyond surface-level fixes allows you to address the root causes of how you feel and look. TMJ Relief

Effective Solutions To Ease Your Jaw Pain

Understanding TMJ Disorders

TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, refers to pain or discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. This small but powerful hinge is responsible for movements like chewing, talking, and yawning. When something goes wrong—whether from misalignment, stress, or injury—it can lead to persistent pain and limited movement.

A TMJ disorder can be hard to recognize, as the symptoms may seem unrelated at first. However, if you’re experiencing jaw pain or stiffness, frequent headaches, or a clicking sound when you move your jaw, these signs may be pointing to a TMJ issue. Understanding this condition is the first step toward relief.

Symptoms and Daily Impacts

TMJ disorders can show up as a variety of symptoms. Many people feel tenderness in their jaw or around the ears, while others experience headaches, neck pain, or even difficulty chewing. You might hear or feel clicking when you open or close your mouth, or notice your jaw occasionally locks up.

The discomfort isn’t limited to the jaw alone; it often affects overall well-being, making sleep difficult or affecting focus during the day. Some people even experience dizziness or ringing in their ears, making TMJ dis-

Do You Need a Smile Makeover?

There’s so much that can be done these days to improve the appearance of a person’s smile – at any age. From powerful, professional whitening treatments to amazingly realistic porcelain veneers to state-of-the-art dental implants, there’s a wide range of exciting possibilities.

The first step in any smile makeover is a thorough dental examination to make sure that your cosmetic problems really are just that, and not a sign of underlying dental disease. Once your health has been established, your smile can be cosmetically enhanced in a variety of ways.

Modern dentistry offers a wide range of services. These procedures include:

• Cosmetic Bonding

• Crowns and Bridgework

• Dental Implants

• Fillings

• Inlays and Onlays

• Invisalign Clear Aligners

• Orthodontic Treatment

• Porcelain Veneers

• Removable Dentures

• Teeth Whitening

• Tooth-Colored Fillings

• Tooth Decay Prevention It is important to communicate what you don’t like about your smile and how you’d like it to be different.

1. What do you like or dislike about the color, size, shape and spacing of your teeth?

2. Are you pleased with how much your teeth show, both when you smile and when your lips are relaxed?

3. Do you want teeth that are perfectly aligned and a bright “Hollywood White,” or would you prefer a more natural look with slight color, shape and shade variations?

4. Would you like more or less of your gums to show when you smile? It is extremely helpful for you to bring in pictures you have collected – of smiles you like, smiles you don’t like, and/or photos of the way your own smile used to look, if that’s the result you’re aiming for. Now is the time to get started on creating a smile that will make you feel as good as you look.

At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals!

Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. One of our greatest joys is helping patients smile again, especially those who may not have seen a dentist in a while. You’ll be amazed at how the quality of life can change! We strive to create a partnership with you that starts the moment you walk through our door.

Understanding Medicare Coverage For Dental Health

Addressing Issues Below the Gum Line

One significant aspect of Medicare’s coverage for dental services, is the inclusion of certain surgical procedures related to systemic conditions. This means that if an oral issue, such as an infection below the gum line, is contributing to or exacerbating a systemic health condition, Medicare may cover the necessary treatment. For instance, if an untreated dental infection is causing complications for someone with diabetes or cancer, Medicare may provide coverage for the dental services needed to address the infection, thereby helping to manage the individual’s overall health.

It’s important to note that while Medicare’s coverage for dental services has expanded, it still has limitations. Coverage for surgical procedures below the gum line typically falls under Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) or Part B (medical insurance). However, coverage may vary depending on factors such as the specific procedure needed, the individual’s health condition, and whether the treatment is deemed medically necessary. Additionally, Medicare Advantage plans may offer more comprehensive dental coverage compared to traditional Medicare plans.

For seniors and individuals with disabilities, understanding Medicare’s coverage for oral health is crucial for accessing necessary treatment. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help prevent issues below the gum line, but if problems do arise, knowing what Medicare will cover can alleviate financial con-

cerns and ensure timely treatment.

To maximize Medicare benefits for dental service, individuals should stay informed about their coverage options, including any updates or changes to Medicare policies regarding oral health care. Additionally, discussing dental concerns with

healthcare providers and exploring supplemental dental insurance plans can help fill any gaps in coverage and ensure comprehensive care.

In conclusion, Medicare now provides coverage for certain dental services addressing issues below the gum line, such as infections, cysts and fractures, recognizing the significant impact of oral health on overall well-being. By understanding Medicare’s coverage options and staying proactive about dental care, seniors and individuals with disabilities can better manage their dental health and overall quality of life.

KEY TO YOUR CHILD’S

ADVANCEDDENTALTECHNOLOGY MAGICALDENTALEXPERIENCE

Pediatric Dental offices, like Smile Wonders, utilize state of the art technology to make children feel comfortable while receiving top quality and enjoyable dental care. Because of the technology, there is reduced fear and anxiety during dentist visits for kids who haven’t had the opportunity to become familiar with their dentist.

Here are a few tech items to ask about when searching for a Pediatric Dentist for your child:

Laser Dentistry is one of the most advanced dental treatments available today By utilizing laser energy and water, Pediatric Dentists are able to perform a wide range of dental treatments in a comfortable manner for kids. The Waterlaser is very effective in desensitizing teeth during restorative treatment, reducing the need for needles and local anesthetic.

It is also much more gentle than sharp instruments, such as scissors or scalpels, during soft tissue procedures. The Waterlaser’s gentle approach allows for a much easier recovery. Waterlasers help eliminate the fear associated with dental treatment and foster a healthier mindset about oral care.

When it comes to helping you understand your child’s dental diagnosis or treatment, intraoral digital cameras allow you to see exactly what the Pediatric Dentist sees.

These cameras produce instant images of your little one’s teeth. The images can be saved as stills or video. The cameras are designed to be slim and small, so children can easily tolerate having pictures of each tooth taken.

Diagnostic x-rays have long been invaluable to dentistry. The emergence of digital technology within the past decade have made dental x-rays significantly more safe and comfortable.

Digital technology allows the reduction of radiation exposure to patients by as much as 90% over traditional x-rays. In fact, eating 2 bananas can expose a person to more radiation than what is used for 1 dental x-ray.

In addition to how safe digital x-rays are, they save time as pictures are developed quickly. They also provide sharper images that can be enhanced instantly to show detail. Since the images are captured so quickly, tolerating the sensors is often more comfortable for children rather than traditional film.

The best and most child friendly offices have technology that kids and parents are already familiar with, such as TVs or iPad. These help children to feel at ease when entering a dental setting. A play area filled with toys, books, and iPads will excite kids about visiting the office. Child-friendly games and apps can be used to keep kids occupied while they wait for their appointment.

TVs at each operatory chair can be used to play popular TV shows or movies to help distract children from being nervous and bring their attention to something more exciting than a teeth cleaning or filling.

Paperless Charts Our electronic system for storing files allows for fast access to files, improves office efficiency and productivity and ensures that records are never misplaced.

With so many advances in health technology available, be sure to see if your Pediatric Dentist is able to utilize them so your little ones can continue to build happy, healthy oral hygiene habits for life!

Ashburn Children’s Dentistry

About Krystle Dean-Duru

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry. It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult.

I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology. I received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, New York, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board certified, I am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams!

“Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

Washington, DC

Meet Dr. Michael Glickman

Dr. Michael L. Glickman, MD, is a triple board-certified family medicine, lifestyle medicine, and obesity medicine physician who has been practicing since 2013, and founded Revolution Medicine in 2021.

Revolution was born from the idea that there is something missing in the US health care system, which has been designed to treat disease rather than prevent it. Nearly three-quarters of adults are overweight, yet doctors have little time to promote wellness, with limited advice beyond “eat less, exercise more.”

Dr. Glickman’s aim has been to correct this imbalance by creating a holistically tailored program that considers the whole person, mind and body, to promote weight loss, and prevent and reverse chronic disease.

When he’s not taking care of patients, Dr. Glickman spends time with his wife and two children. To stay healthy, Michael weight trains, plays tennis, and cooks nutritious meals. He is a classically trained violinist and enjoys practicing in his free time. Michael graduated from the Florida State University College of Medicine, and completed his residency at VCU-Fairfax Family Practice / INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

Revolution Medicine, Health & Fitness is a membership-based specialty practice on a mission to provide a comprehensive, affordable, and accessible weight loss solution to all, through an innovative technology-driven platform, integrating evidence-based weight loss medicine, a preventive approach to individual health, and personalized nutrition and fitness.

Laura Deter, Sobriety Coach

Meet Laura Deter

Drinking too much is NOT your fault!

Are you tired of lying about your alcohol use?

Are you tired of worrying about making it through the holidays without losing control of your drinking?

Are you tired of wondering if others know you don’t remember what happened the night before?

Are you tired of wondering if you made a fool of yourself or sent an inappropriate text, phone message, or email?

Will someone find out?

Our society pushes alcohol for every occasion - weddings, funerals, births, sporting events, relaxing after work, dealing with stress . . . I know there are more . . . And it’s even worse around the Holidays when we’re around family members who trigger us.

Then - when you are into the habit of drinking often, and you slip down into addiction, . . .

You’re told you have a disease or a moral failure and will have to quit immediately, abstain completely, and attend meetings in church basements for the rest of your life. And you’re powerless.

No wonder you’re keeping your drinking a secret!

I’ve been there - and it’s hard. I’m here to give you hope. I have a better way.

What Does “Drink Responsibly” Mean Anyway

Not being honest with your doctor about alcohol use can be life threatening! You are NOT an alcoholic and you DON’T have to quit immediately or forever.

I’ve been where you are - not at “rock bottom” but knowing that my drinking was harming my life and my relationships.

Less than a year after my last drink, I was able to attend a wedding and not want a drink.

I could go to a Football Game Watching Party at a bar and not be triggered.

I’ve dealt with physical pain from multiple knee surgeries and the emotional pain of losing a parent - without drinking a drop of alcohol.

My husband and friends will tell you that I’m an empathic, highly sensitive and very emotional woman.

I was using alcohol to numb all the hard things in my life that I couldn’t handle. Life still gets hard, AND I KNOW in my gut and head that alcohol WON’T help me get through it.

I love being clear-headed!

Great Smiles Start Here

How Orthodontic Treatment Benefits Adult Patients

Many people seek orthodontic treatment for an attractive smile. However, the benefits of orthodontic treatment go beyond the obvious physical changes of straight teeth.

Malocclusion is the term used by orthodontists for crooked, crowded and protruded teeth. Literally the word means “bad bite.” Untreated malocclusions can lead to speech problems, uneven tooth wear, chewing and periodontal problems.

A bad bite distributes pressure unevenly across the mouth and puts unhealthy forces on the bones that support the teeth and chewing muscles. If left untreated, years of uneven chewing can lead to problems, such as headaches, TMJ syndrome, and face and neck pain.

Crowded teeth are often difficult to brush and floss, while spacing between teeth leads to food impaction. Both conditions make it harder to keep the teeth clean. Over a period of time these problems can lead to tooth decay, gum diseases, bone loss and loss of teeth.

Orthodontic treatment not only aligns the teeth, but it also ensures proper alignment of both the upper and lower jaws. When both jaws fit together in the right way, they eliminate occlusal trauma, function better and improve the patients’ long-term oral health.

The benefits of orthodontic treatment not only include an attractive smile, but also a healthier mouth and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.

Why Are Feet Flat?

The arch of your foot is its main supportive structure. If this arch loses strength, the bony framework begins to collapse, causing your foot to flatten. Like a sagging bridge, the weakness in the middle strains the joints at both ends of your foot.

Causes

There are many causes of flat feet. Some people are born with them. Others acquire flat feet as a result of arthritis, trauma, or musculoskeletal disorders. Overuse or repeated pounding on hard surfaces can also weaken the foots arch.

Symptoms

Discomfort from flat feet often doesn’t appear for years. At some point, pain may be felt and walking may become awkward as increasing strain is put on your feet and calves.

Related Problems

The excess strain from flat feet can cause other foot problems, such as hammertoes, bunions, heel spurs, arch strain, corns, neuromas and sagging joints. Flat feet can also affect other parts of the body, causing fatigue, pain, or stiffness in the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.

Medical History and Physical Exam

To determine the best treatment for your problem, your podiatrist looks at your medical history, such as any medical problems you may have had in the past. He or she asks about the length and frequency of your symptoms, the types of activities you do, and any pain or problems you may have in other parts of your body. Your podiatrist does a complete examination of your foot, including a gait analysis to observe the movement

In the realm of medical science, the field of colon and rectal surgery has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years. These developments have not only revolutionized the way medical professionals diagnose and treat colorectal conditions but have also significantly improved patient outcomes and quality of life. Advanced medical technology has played a pivotal role in these achievements, enhancing the precision and effectiveness of procedures, reducing recovery times, and minimizing post-operative discomfort.

One of the most prominent advancements in colon and rectal surgery is the adoption of minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. Laparoscopy involves making small incisions and inserting a camera and specialized surgical tools to perform the procedure. Robotic-assisted surgery takes this a step further by offering greater precision and dexterity through the use of robotic arms controlled by the surgeon. These techniques lead to smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. Patients experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and can often return to their normal activities sooner.

Imaging technology has also transformed the preoperative phase of colorectal surgeries. High-resolution MRI and CT scans allow surgeons to obtain detailed images of the affected area, helping them plan the procedure with unparalleled accuracy. Three-dimensional modeling and virtual reality systems enable surgeons to practice complex procedures before they step into the operating room, reducing the risk of complications and improving outcomes.

Endoscopy has seen substantial advancements in recent years, with technologies like colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and flexible sigmoidoscopy providing more precise and less invasive ways to detect and diagnose colorectal conditions. These procedures, often performed on an outpatient basis, have become essential tools for early detection and prevention, leading to more effective treatments.

In the realm of therapeutics, new technology has led to groundbreaking

Advancing Colorectal Surgery with CuttingEdge Medical Technology

advancements in the treatment of colorectal cancers. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are being used to combat cancer cells with unprecedented precision, minimizing the harm to healthy tissues. Additionally, advanced surgical instruments and techniques are making it possible to perform complex, organ-preserving surgeries, preserving patients’ quality of life.

Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) is being harnessed to improve decision-making in colorectal surgery. AI algorithms can analyze vast datasets to predict patient outcomes, assist in surgical planning, and identify potential complications early. These AI tools provide valuable insights to surgeons and help optimize treatment plans.

Advanced medical technology is revolutionizing the field of colon and rectal surgery. Minimally invasive tech-

niques, improved imaging, endoscopic procedures, and innovative therapeutic approaches are making these surgeries more effective and less intrusive for patients. The synergy between technology and medical expertise is leading to better outcomes, shorter recovery times, and ultimately, enhanced quality of life for individuals undergoing colorectal surgery. As technology continues to advance, the future holds even more promising possibilities for this critical field of medicine.

What Is CEREC Dentistry?

CEREC stands for “chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics” and is a computer-aided design and manufacturing system for dentists. CEREC combines a camera, computer, and milling instrument into one machine allowing tooth restorations to be created in the dentist office, all within a single visit.

In 1985 Serona launched CEREC, which marked the beginning of digitalization in dentistry.

CEREC crowns are more efficient and technologically advanced and have become the preferred option. While it can take weeks to receive a traditional dental crown, a CEREC crown uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to create crowns in a single appointment. Not only that, but they allow for a better bite and more natural teeth for patients.

CEREC crowns fit perfectly. They look and feel like a real tooth thanks to computer-aided technology.

At your appointment, your dentist will use a small camera to create a 3D digital impression of your mouth. A milling unit is then utilized to create the ceramic crown. The dentist will then paint and glaze each tooth to match the rest of your mouth. Once this is complete, the dentist can bond the tooth into your mouth in a matter of minutes. It’s that quick and easy.

The entire process should only take about two hours. The CEREC crowns are created with advanced accuracy and precision, look and feel like a real tooth, and every step of the process is much more comfortable for the patient.

You won’t need to wear a temporary crown or have uncomfortable impressions of your mouth taken. Plus, you will experience much less post-operative sensitivity. And don’t forget, you only need to schedule a single appointment.

TMJ R elief

order a condition that impacts far more than just the jaw. With proper care, it’s possible to ease these symptoms and get back to enjoying daily life.

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

A range of factors can contribute to TMJ disorders, and for many, the cause is a combination of several elements. For instance, a misaligned bite or jaw can gradually strain the joint over time. Teeth grinding or clenching, often a response to stress, adds pressure to the joint and nearby muscles, especially during sleep when you may be unaware of the tension.

Stress itself can lead to jaw clenching and muscle tension, worsening TMJ pain. For some, arthritis in the jaw joint is the underlying cause, while for others, a previous injury or accident may have created the condition. Each cause requires a personalized approach, making it important to work with a professional who understands TMJ intricacies.

TMJ Treatment Options

For those experiencing TMJ pain, relief is possible through a combination of self-care practices and professional treatment options. At home, applying cold packs can help reduce swelling, while a warm compress may soothe sore muscles. Gentle jaw exercises, recommended by a dental professional, can also improve movement and reduce discomfort.

If pain persists, dentists often recommend custom-made splints or mouthguards to relieve jaw tension. These devices, fitted to your unique bite, protect against nighttime grinding and help realign the jaw. In cases of jaw misalignment, orthodontic treatments like braces or aligners may be needed to correct bite issues, which can relieve TMJ stress.

Physical therapy is another effec-

fRoM page 21

tive option, with stretches and targeted exercises that relax the jaw muscles. For severe or persistent cases, minimally invasive treatments, such as injections to reduce muscle tension, can provide long-lasting relief. Working closely with a knowledgeable dentist can help you find the combination of treatments that best fits your needs.

Preventing TMJ Pain and Protecting Your Joint

Taking steps to prevent or lessen TMJ discomfort can make a difference. Managing stress through regular relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, can reduce the tension that often contributes to TMJ pain. Maintaining good posture, especially while sitting at a desk or looking at a screen, helps avoid putting strain on your neck and jaw.

Avoiding hard or chewy foods, like gum or sticky candy, can further protect the joint from unnecessary pressure. And regular checkups with your dentist ensure that jaw health is monitored, catching any early signs of TMJ issues before they progress. These small lifestyle adjustments support a healthy, pain-free jaw.

The Path tT Relief

Living with TMJ pain doesn’t have to be a permanent condition. With the right treatment approach and preventive care, you can achieve significant relief and regain your comfort. At our office, we specialize in personalized TMJ treatments designed to target your unique needs, from lifestyle adjustments and custom dental devices to therapeutic exercises.

Schedule an appointment with us to take the first step toward managing your TMJ symptoms and improving your quality of life. Together, we’ll work on a plan to help you feel your best and get back to living pain-free.

a child’s health and development, impacting facial features, jaw development, and overall growth. Mouth breathing can set off a chain reaction of issues, altering the growth of the lower and upper jaws, midface, and nasal bones, ultimately affecting the child’s facial balance.

Pediatric Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) and OSA Symptoms

Children with SRDB may present a range of symptoms, including:

• Difficulty falling or staying asleep

• Sleepwalking, night terrors, and other parasomnias

• Excessive daytime sleepiness

• Mouth breathing, dry lips, bad breath

• Dark circles under the eyes

• Tonsil and adenoid problems

• Snoring

• Teeth grinding

• Bed-wetting

• Inner ear infections

• Limited tongue/lip mobility

• Hyperactivity

• Difficulty concentrating

• Selective eating habits

and stability of your legs and feet as you walk.

Testing

If your problem is severe and a bone problem is suspected, x-rays may be needed. If other problems are suspected, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) may be done, which reveals crosssectional images of soft tissue and bone.

Treatment Methods

ing pauses, restlessness, and coughing or choking episodes during sleep. Dentist’s Role

Contrary to conventional belief, pediatric dentists with specialized training are well-equipped to address symptoms related to sleep and airway conditions. The airway, mode of breathing, and malocclusion are closely interconnected and should be addressed early and holistically by dentists. Advanced technology, such as cone beam 3D imaging, allows dentists to effectively diagnose airway issues and guide proper growth and development. Early intervention is essential in guiding proper growth and development.

Convenient at-home sleep study tests are now available to diagnose pediatric sleep apnea and breathing issues. These tests provide comprehensive, accurate data for proper diagnoses.

Treatment goals encompass the elimination of detrimental habits, guiding optimal cranial, jaw, and facial development, preventing dental misalignment, and enhancing airway health and oxygen sufficiency. Various therapies, including oral appliances, myofunctional therapy and positive airway pressure therapy, can effectively alleviate symptoms.

Surgery

If your flat feet cause chronic pain, surgery may be needed to correct the alignment of the bones in your feet, or to support or reinforce the tendon structures in your feet.

What Can I Do About Flat Feet?

If flat feet are diagnosed at an early age, chances are good that nonsurgical treatment, such as strapping, custom shoe inserts (orthotics), or medication can help the problem.

Nonsurgical Care

Strapping – Taping your feet may help by temporarily maintaining the proper position of your feet.

Orthotics – Custom orthotics can readjust the weight bearing position of your feet. Soft, semi-flexible, or rigid inserts may be used, depending on your weight and physical activity.

Medication – You may be given anti-inflammatory medication to temporarily relieve pain caused by flat feet.

To help ease the pain of flat feet, try the following as part of your daily routine. If you have continuing problems, be sure to see your podiatrist. Stretching – To stretch your soles and tendons, try this Lean on something stationary, with one leg in front of the other and both heels flat. Bend the front knee. Hold for 10 seconds. Bend your back knee, bringing the heel up. Hold for 10 seconds. Do this five times with each leg.

Shoes – Be sure your shoes are supportive and comfortable, with enough space in the toe box for toes to wiggle. Women should wear lowheeled shoes, not pumps.

Soaking and Massage – Warmwater soaks or ice massages can help relieve pain. But if you have diabetes or a circulation problem, talk with your podiatrist first.

Upper Arm Liposuction / Upper Arm Lift

Many patients who have been successful in their weight loss journey, once the weight is gone, are disappointed to find that their upper arms do not look the way they expected. Weight loss is a major contributing factor to sagging excess skin on your upper arm. When you gain weight, the skin stretches to accommodate more fat. Unfortunately, skin doesn’t contract as easily as it expands. Loose

skin and remaining pockets of fat on the upper arm are very common after weight loss.

An Arm lift or Upper Arm Liposuction are both surgical procedures that can improve the appearance of your upper arms; however, they have different focuses and approaches.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, will tighten, lift, and smooth the skin and tis-

sues of your arm for a more sleek and sculpted shape. The focus is on removing the excess sagging skin and attached fat to improve both the upper arm size and contour. An arm lift has a longer incision extending from the underarm to the elbow.

Arm Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure for removing pockets of fat from the upper arm. It requires few,

smaller incisions and doesn’t tighten the skin.

In many cases, both procedures are performed together for the best results. An arm lift can be helpful for people who have lost a significant amount of weight and whose skin can’t contract over their smaller arms. Arm liposuction effectively removes fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise.
