“Laser” Cataract Surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye, causing vision loss that cannot be corrected with glasses, contact lenses or corneal refractive surgery like LASIK.

In cataract surgery, the lens inside your eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens, or IOL) to restore clear vision.

The procedure typically is performed on an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay in a hospital or other care facility. Most modern cataract procedures involve the use of a high-frequency ultrasound device that breaks up the cloudy lens into small pieces, which are then gently removed from the eye with suction.

What Is the Femtosecond Laser?

Recently, a number of femtosecond lasers – similar to the lasers used for LASIK – have been approved by the FDA for use in cataract surgery to do the following steps:

• Creating corneal incisions to allow the surgeon access to the lens

• Removing the anterior capsule of the lens

• Fragmenting the cataract (so less phaco energy is required to break it up and remove it)

• Creating peripheral corneal incisions to reduce astigmatism (when needed)

A femtosecond laser can also be used to perform some of the steps of surgery to remove a clear lens or refractive lens exchange (RLE), and to make arcuate incisions in the cornea (AK) to reduce astigmatism. There are benefits and risks associated with the use of the laser, and there may be additional costs.

Lasers vs. Traditional Surgery To Remove the Lens

What Are the Possible Benefits?

Traditionally, the eye surgeon uses blades to create the incisions in the cornea (the front window of the

eye), and other special instruments to create the capsulotomy (the circular incision in the outer layer of the cataract or clear lens). The surgeon also uses a phacoemulsification device that utilizes ultrasound power to break up the lens and remove it from the eye. The femtosecond laser can be used to perform some or all of these steps.

The possible benefits of the laser include the ability to make more precise and consistent incisions in the cornea, a more circular and centered capsulotomy, and to pre-soften the cataract so less ultrasound energy is necessary with the phacoemulsification device.

How Is the Laser Used To Treat Astigmatism?

Patients with astigmatism have several choices for the reduction of astigmatism. Nonsurgical options for astigmatism correction include glasses and contact lenses. Surgical correction of astigmatism can be achieved through a toric intraocular lens, a limbal relaxing incision (LRI) made manually with a blade, or an arcuate incision made with the femtosecond laser (AK). Refractive surgery such as LASIK or PRK can also treat astigmatism. The shape and size of incisions made with the laser may be more precise.

MARYLAND & VIRGINIA Since 1990

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

Maintenance and Protection Of Dental Implants and Natural Teeth

Once a dental implant is in place, maintaining its health and protecting the surrounding natural teeth are essential to ensuring the longevity of the restoration. Proper care routines can prevent complications such as infection, implant failure, and damage to adjacent teeth.

Daily oral hygiene is the cornerstone of implant maintenance. Brushing twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste helps remove plaque and bacteria from the implant site. Electric toothbrushes can be especially effective at reaching areas around the implant and abutment. Additionally, patients should use floss or interdental brushes to clean between the implant and surrounding teeth, as food particles and plaque can accumulate in these areas.

For patients with multiple implants or complex restorations, a water flosser can be a valuable tool for dislodging debris without putting undue pressure on the implant site. Antimicrobial mouth rinses can also reduce bacterial buildup and promote gum health, reducing the risk of peri-implantitis – a condition similar to gum disease that can compromise the implant.

Regular dental checkups are critical for monitoring the condition of the implant and adjacent teeth. During these visits, the dentist will assess the integrity of the implant, examine the gums for signs of infection or recession, and perform professional cleanings to remove plaque that may not be accessible with home care tools. X-rays may also be taken periodically to ensure that the implant remains securely integrated with the bone.

Patients who grind or clench their teeth should consider wearing a custom nightguard to protect both the implant and natural teeth. Excessive pressure from grinding can cause implant components to loosen or fracture, potentially leading to implant failure. A nightguard provides a cushioning effect that absorbs the force and minimizes wear and tear on the implant.

Dietary choices also play a role in implant maintenance. Hard, crunchy foods can exert undue pressure on the implant, increasing the risk of damage. Patients should avoid chewing on ice, hard candies, and other hard objects. Additionally, foods high in sugar and acidic beverages can contribute to plaque buildup and gum inflammation, potentially jeopardizing the implant’s stability.

For smokers, quitting is highly recommended. Smoking not only slows the

healing process after implant surgery but also increases the risk of infection and implant failure. Nicotine restricts blood flow to the gums, impairing the body’s natural ability to fight bacteria and heal after dental procedures.

Protecting natural teeth adjacent to the implant is equally important. Ensuring that these teeth remain healthy and properly aligned can help maintain the implant’s stability. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental exams will

help prevent decay and gum disease, reducing the risk of complications that could affect the implant site. By adhering to a comprehensive care routine and maintaining regular dental appointments, patients can maximize the lifespan of their dental implants while preserving the health of their natural teeth. With proper maintenance, a dental implant can last for decades, providing a reliable, functional, and natural-looking tooth replacement solution.

Dental Implants A Reliable Solution For Missing Teeth

Missing teeth are more than a cosmetic concern—they can significantly affect your oral health, comfort, and confidence. Fortunately, modern dentistry offers a long-lasting and natural-looking solution: dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as an artificial tooth root. Once the bone fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration, a crown, bridge, or denture can be securely attached. This creates a stable replacement that looks, feels, and functions much like a natural tooth.

Why Replacing Missing Teeth Matters

When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins to deteriorate because it no longer receives the stimulation that chewing provides. Over time, this can cause changes in facial structure and lead to shifting of nearby teeth. Missing teeth can also affect speech, chewing ef-

ficiency, and self-esteem. Replacing them with implants helps maintain jawbone integrity, keeps adjacent teeth in place, and restores normal oral function.

Benefits Of Dental Implants

• Natural appearance and feel –Implants closely mimic the look and strength of natural teeth.

• Durability – With proper care, implants can last decades, often a lifetime.

• Bone preservation – Unlike traditional bridges or dentures, implants stimulate the jawbone and prevent bone loss.

• Improved comfort and function – Implants eliminate the slipping or irritation that can occur with removable dentures.

Choosing a dental home is not a decision that should be made in haste. There are a lot of factors to consider. The most important are comfort and trust.

The entire staff at Burke Dental wants to be your home for dental care. We take pride in our profession and aim to provide each patient with individualized, high quality treatment.

We truly do care about our patients as individual people, members of families, and valuable contributors to our community.

We love getting to know our patients and we strive to give them the highest quality care available.

Call today to schedule your appointment with us!

• No impact on neighboring teeth – Unlike bridges, implants do not require grinding down adjacent healthy teeth.

Who Is a Candidate?

Most healthy adults are candidates for implants. Ideal candidates have sufficient bone density and healthy gums to support the implant. Patients with conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, smoking habits, or significant bone loss may need additional evaluation or treatment before implant placement.

The Process

Implant treatment typically involves several stages: consultation and planning, surgical placement of the implant, a healing period for bone integration, and finally, placement of the crown or restoration. The process may take several months, but the outcome is a strong, stable, and permanent tooth replacement.

Conclusion

Dental implants are one of the most advanced and effective solutions for missing teeth. They not only restore your smile but also protect your oral health for the future. If you are considering replacing a missing tooth, ask your dentist whether implants are right for you.

The diagnosis of cancer or tumor

Treating Cancer Of the Spine

of a spine can be a devastating blow to a patient. In addition to the burden of living with the disease, the patients have to live with significant pain and disability. Modern spinal treatments in this field have truly made some remarkable advances, providing dramatic relief to patients and prolonging their lives.

When cancer attacks the spine, it may start at that site (called primary cancer) or may spread there from another part of the body (called meta-

static cancer). Spinal cancer may be discovered in a patient who is already living with cancer (e.g. breast, lung, colon, melanoma) or it may be a new diagnosis. The most common symptom of cancer in the spine is pain. It may be accompanied by weakness or numbness or other neurological problems.

Apply today and grow with a practice that’s making a real difference in patients’ lives.

The first step in dealing with cancer of the spine is an accurate and speedy diagnosis. Once a diagnostic test (CT, MRI, blood tests or biopsy) confirms cancer, the next step is a discussion between the patient and the cancer team about the next steps. A spine specialist is a vital part of this discussion.

The diagnosis of cancer or tumor of a spine can be a devastating blow to a patient.

Whether the cancer started in the spine or spread to the spine from another site, its treatment seeks to achieve similar goals controlling the patient’s pain, making sure that his or her neurological status remains as highly functional as possible and finally removing or stopping the cancerous growth.

A minimally invasive spinal surgery can be a very powerful tool in these situations. By offering patients a small incision and a speedy recovery, these techniques allow other treatments like chemotherapy and radiation to start earlier than previously possible. Another exciting advance in this field is robotic radiosurgery. This allows spine specialists to deliver large doses of radiation to the cancer with surgical precision.

It is important to remember that with a team approach, a patient diagnosed with spinal cancer has significantly better quality of life along with the best treatments.

Cancer and Periodontal Disease

Can a dental exam save your life? Regular dental appointments are strongly encouraged so that your dentist may look for any unhealthy conditions and catch them before they become big problems with even bigger costs.

Loss of teeth and increased cost of dental procedures are not the only reasons to see a dentist today. It is now clear that gum disease should be added to the list of factors that cause unhealthy body conditions. There is an extremely high risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, blood diseases, heart attack, and stroke. With the latest research there is now evidence to add cancer to the list of gum disease related illnesses. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47.2% of adults who are over 30 years of age in the United States have some type of periodontitis. With age, this rate increases, so that 70.1% of U.S. adults over 65 years old have this disease. Dental patients with moderate forms of gum disease have an overall 14% increased risk of developing cancer according to recent studies.

If you have any form of gum disease, even mild gingivitis, the normal act of brushing your teeth or chewing allows bacteria to enter your blood stream. The blood stream then carries the bacteria throughout the body. Studies have also found that gum disease is linked to a higher chance of pancreatic, lung, kidney and blood cancers in both smokers and nonsmokers. There was a 33% increase in the risk of lung cancer.

There was a 50% rise in the chance of kidney cancer and a 38% rise in pancreatic cancer. Blood cancers such as leukemia rose by 30% among men with gum disease. In another study it was found that for each millimeter of bone loss in chronic periodontitis, a serious form of gum disease, there was a four times the increase in head and neck cancer.

Searching for a precise connection goes on and will hopefully one day lead us to a cure but for now it is thought that untreated gum disease can trigger a substantial reduction in the immune response and cause damage to the immune system. This in turn makes it easier for the cancer to grow. It is also possible that the bacteria from the gum disease could be directly causing the cancer themselves. Further studies will be done in the coming months and years.

It is now clear that gum disease should be added to the list of factors that cause unhealthy body conditions.

What can be done today? See a periodontist. A periodontist is a special dentist that can determine your level of periodontal disease and help determine your risk factors. A referral is not required. Patients with a recent cancer diagnosis should see a periodontist prior to starting chemotherapy or radiation. They can help catch and treat these bacteria early to lower your risk in later years. Call a periodontist today and set up a complete periodontal evaluation. It just might save your life.

Cervical Cancer Essentials

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented— and when it’s detected early. Yet many women delay screenings or don’t realize the steps they can take right now to protect their long-term health. Understanding how cervical cancer develops, and how to lower your risk, can make all the difference.

What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer begins in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Most cases are caused by persistent

Optimum Health Begins With Oral Health

infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus spread through intimate contact. While most HPV infections clear on their own, some strains can cause abnormal cell changes that, if left untreated, may progress to cervical cancer over time.

The Power Of Prevention

The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable. Regular Pap tests and HPV screenings allow doctors to detect changes in cervical cells long before they become cancerous. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), women between the ages of 21 and 65 should follow recommended screening guidelines, which may include Pap tests every three years, HPV testing every five years, or a combination of both depending on age and health history. In addition to screening, HPV vaccination remains a key strategy in preventing cervical cancer. Healthcare providers should consistently advocate

Mouth Breathing Why It Matters For Your Health and Smile

Breathing is something most of us do without thinking, yet how we breathe has a significant impact on oral health and overall well-being. While the nose is designed to filter, warm, and humidify air, many people breathe through the mouth, particularly during sleep. Although it may seem harmless, chronic mouth breathing can contribute to dental problems, orthodontic issues, and broader health concerns.

Why Mouth Breathing Happens

Mouth breathing often occurs when nasal passages are blocked by allergies, chronic sinus issues, or enlarged tonsils and adenoids. In some cases, it can develop into a habitual pattern even after the original cause is resolved. To meet the body’s need for oxygen, the mouth takes over when nasal airflow is blocked. While this provides a short-term solution, persistent mouth breathing can create long-term challenges for oral health and overall wellness.

The Oral Health Connection

One of the most immediate effects of mouth breathing is dry mouth. Saliva plays a critical role in washing away bacteria, neutralizing acids, and protecting teeth from decay. Without sufficient saliva, the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath increases. Over time, chronic dryness can make it difficult to maintain a healthy oral environment and may contribute to inflammation.

When Little Smiles Hurt

Toothache Relief and Emergency Care For Kids

pecially distressing because it interferes with eating, sleeping, and overall wellbeing. Children may not always be able to explain what they are feeling, which makes it even more important for parents to understand the causes, symptoms, and steps to take when a toothache arises.

What Causes Toothaches In Children?

As parents, there are few things more difficult than seeing a child in pain. A toothache, while common, can be es-

A toothache in children can stem from many issues. The most common cause is tooth decay, but other factors

include gum infections, tooth fractures, or even food particles trapped between teeth. In some cases, emerging teeth may cause temporary discomfort. While a toothache may seem minor, it should never be ignored. Left untreated, dental pain can lead to more serious conditions, such as abscesses or widespread infections that may affect overall health.

Signs Of a Toothache

Children may not always verbalize their discomfort, so it is important

to watch for warning signs, such as:

• Holding or rubbing the jaw or mouth

• Refusing to eat or drink

• Trouble sleeping or irritability

• Swelling of the cheeks or jaw

• Fever or headaches (in severe cases) If any of these symptoms are present, prompt dental care is essential to relieve pain and identify the cause.

Emergency Dental Care

When a child experiences a toothache, timely professional care is crucial. Pediatric dentists are trained to handle emergencies with compassion and expertise. Treatment often begins with a gentle examination and, if needed, imaging to pinpoint the issue. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve:

• Fillings to restore teeth damaged by cavities

• Pulp therapy or root canal treatment for infected or injured nerves

• Extractions when a tooth cannot be saved

• Antibiotics or other medications if infection is present

The priority in any emergency visit is to alleviate pain while creating a calm, supportive environment for the child.

Preventing Future Toothaches

Although dental pain can occur unexpectedly, parents can help reduce risks by focusing on prevention. Key strategies include:

• Establishing strong oral hygiene habits: Encourage brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day.

• Regular dental visits: Check-ups every six months allow dentists to identify issues early before they become painful.

• Healthy diet choices: Limit sugary snacks and drinks that contribute to cavities, and promote a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and water.

• Protecting teeth during sports: A custom mouthguard can reduce the risk of dental injuries during physical activities.

A child’s smile is one of their greatest assets, and protecting it begins with addressing dental pain promptly and preventing future issues through good habits and regular care. If your child shows signs of a toothache, don’t wait—seek professional dental attention to ensure their comfort and long-term oral health. With the right care, children can return quickly to their routines, free from pain and full of smiles.

The Link Between Obesity and Cancer

Obesity is often associated with conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, but research shows it also plays a significant role in the development of certain cancers. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that being overweight or obese is linked to at least 13 different types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, uterine, kidney, and pancreatic cancers. Understanding this connection is essential for prevention and long-term health.

Obesity creates an internal environment that can encourage cancer growth. Extra body fat increases levels of estrogen, insulin, and growth factors in the body—hormones that, in high amounts, may stimulate cancer cell development. In addition, fat tissue promotes chronic low-grade inflammation, which can damage DNA over time and trigger the onset of cancer.

Another concern is that obesity often contributes to insulin resistance and high blood sugar, both of which may fuel tumor growth. This combination of hormonal changes, inflammation, and metabolic stress creates a setting where cancer is more likely to develop.

While excess weight can increase the risk for many cancers, some are more strongly linked than others. For women, obesity after menopause is a major risk factor for breast and endometrial (uterine) cancers. Colorectal cancer risk also rises with higher body weight, as do cancers of the esophagus, pancreas, liver, kidney, and gallbladder. Importantly, the longer a person lives with obesity, the

The Common Cold and Your Oral Health

cold and flu season. Children in the United States miss about 22 million days of school every year due to the common cold. The average child alone gets between six to twelve colds every year and is two to three times more likely to come down with the flu.

Although children are most susceptible to the cold and flu they easily spread their aliments to their caregivers and schoolmates. When you are

feeling down and out the last thing many people want to do is worry about their teeth. However, a few key tips during those down and sick days can help lead you and your family to a speedy recovery without devastation to your oral cavity.

• Stay Hydrated – Being made mostly of water, it is nature’s cure for a variety of conditions. A stuffy and congested nose may cause

you to breath through your mouth. Excessive mouth breathing can slow saliva production and make our mouths susceptible to harmful bacteria. Drinking water during a cold also thins mucus and prevents dehydration. If your child refuses to drink try soups, sugar-free popcicles or Jello.

• Use Sugar-free Cough Drops –Many cough syrups and cough drops contain excessive amounts of sugar to make them taste great. If you are using sugary cough medicines make sure you rinse the residue off your teeth with water and brush before going to bed. There are xylitol candies and nasal sprays that help fight cavities as well as alleviate sore throat and post nasal drip.

• Minimize Sugar Intake – Refined sugars such as fruit juices and white flour can depress your immune system, which weakens your body’s ability to fight infection on its own.

• Don’t Forget to Brush – When you are sick you tend to take several naps throughout the day. Although you are often more tired do not forget to brush your teeth before lying down. Saliva production decreases when you are sleeping, decreasing the bodies ability to cleanse itself.

• Replace your Toothbrush – Bacteria and viruses can live on your toothbrush for hours or even days on hard surfaces. The last thing you want to do is re-infect yourself after just getting over an ailment. Make sure you do not store your toothbrush next to your family members. This could lead to cross-contamination of the new toothbrush and further spread the illness.

April Toyer, DDS

Dr. Toyer grew up as an “Army brat,” but resided many years in Bowie, Maryland. She attended the University of Virginia and received a degree in Biology and Bioethics in 2003. Dr. Toyer attended dental school at the University of Maryland and took part in the Pediatric Dentistry Clerkship program.

Innovative Treatments For TMJ

There are many innovative approaches used to address maxillary and jaw concerns. The approach is focused more on holistic treatments like Appliance Therapy, Nuebie Machine, Laser Therapy, and Massage Therapy but there is another treatment to help. Whether waiting for treatment effects to happen or adjunctive to current treatment, there is another route which is Botox injections. Our holistic treatment approach is outlined below, the technologies and what one can expect.

The Modified Gelb appliance aims to decompress the tissues of the jaw joint and allow the discs to go back into position. Its purpose is to eliminate adverse loading forces and stabilize both TM joints and reduce the pressure on the nerves and blood vessels within the fossa (jawbone sockets). This helps restore physiological function, decreasing pain, increasing the range of motion, and decreasing joint sounds.

The ALF appliance is a lightweight wire appliance that applies light forces to the maxilla. When the levels of the cranial bones (the sphenoid, mastoids, and occiput) are uneven, this can torque and twist the cranium into an unnatural position causing discomfort to the body. The appliance realigns malpositioned segments of the maxillary complex.

The Neubie is an electrical stimulation device that sends direct current signals precisely to where the pain is being experienced or to the limited movement of the muscle area. The system will “reset” neurological patterns to help “re-teach” the body to the correct optimal state or function. This helps with increasing range of motion, reducing spasms, increasing blood flow, relieving pain, and more.

Laser therapy is the use of photobiomodulation technology. The nonthermal laser results in therapeutic treatment for musculoskeletal injuries,

alleviating pain, and chronic or degenerative conditions. The light source is placed in contact with the skin, resulting in the restoration of normal cell function and enhancement of the body’s healing processes.

Massage Therapy gently works the muscles of the head and neck region to stimulate blood flow and the release of toxins. This allows the muscles to heal faster and provides much-needed relief to sore and tense muscles.

Botox treatment is an adjunctive treatment to our appliance therapy. It is used as a means to relax the tension within the jaw muscles and help alleviate the symptoms of pain. These trigger points are defined as a knot or tightness within the muscle when it fails to relax. This causes irritation with the surrounding nerves and can cause referred pain (pain felt in another part of the body). An advantage is that normal function (speaking, eating, or

swallowing) is unaffected. The procedure is non-surgical, and impairment is not a concern for driving. The procedure begins with a complete review of health history, and the target area is marked.

Our team is here to support you through these steps, ensuring each aspect of your treatment is clear and effective. Always consult your doctor, as some of these treatments are restricted by certain medical conditions.

Pain, Clicking or Popping

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”

Peptide Therapies Precision Medicine With Fewer Side Effects

Peptides have been produced and modified using both chemical and biological methods, together with novel design and delivery strategies. Peptides can often play vital roles in the human body such as hormones, growth factors, neurotransmitters, ion channel ligands, and anti-infectives. Generally, peptides are effective and selective signaling molecules that bind to specific cell surface receptors,

triggering intracellular effects. Additionally, in clinical trials, peptides have shown exceptional safety and tolerability in study subjects, while maintaining high selectivity and potency as well as predictable metabolism.

Current Applications and Future Directions

Therapeutic peptides are a unique class of pharmaceutical agents composed of a series of wellordered amino acids. Research into therapeutic peptides started with fundamental studies of natural human hormones, including insulin, oxytocin, vasopressin, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), and their specific physiological activities in the human body. With the introduction of AI, peptide drug development has entered a new era with advances in structural biology, recombinant biologics, and new synthetic and analytic technologies.

The development of peptide drugs has thus become one of the hottest topics in pharmaceutical research.

Advantages

Therapeutic peptides commonly act as hormones, growth factors, neurotransmitters, antiinflammatory, or anti-aging agents. They bind to cell surface receptors

and trigger intracellular effects with high affinity and specificity, with a similar mode of action to biologics, including therapeutic proteins and antibodies. There are very few side effects to peptides, which puts them on the cutting edge of health care technology—both in their implications and treatment potential.

October Is Breast HEALTH Awareness Month!

Isn’t it time we focus on proactive health instead of outdated, fear-driven strategies? For many Americans, the word cancer feels overwhelming and ever-present, touching someone in our inner circle. Similarly, the word mammogram often carries negative associations — pain, fear, and the anxiety of “what if they find something?”

The good news is that women have options. One of the best breast tests you’ve probably never heard of is thermography. This technology has been used for more than 50 years and offers a safe, affordable, noninvasive screening method. With no compression, no radiation, and no fear, thermography provides valuable information to guide your health choices. The more informed you are, the better the outcome.

For many women, thermography is their preferred go-to screening, used alongside yearly physicals. Others rely on it as their primary breast health tool, sometimes paired with ultrasound or mammography when needed.

What Is Thermography?

Thermography uses infrared imaging to detect changes in temperature, symmetry, stagnant fluid,

Supporting a Loved One Through Cancer Treatment

When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, life changes instantly—for them, and for everyone who loves them. Treatment often requires a team effort, and caregivers play a vital role in helping seniors stay strong, safe, and supported at home.

Be a Steady Presence

A cancer diagnosis can bring fear, confusion, and uncertainty.

Simply being there—listening, reassuring, and providing companionship—can ease the emotional burden. Seniors often feel more confident when they know a caring person is by their side during appointments, treatments, and recovery.

Help Manage Daily Tasks

Cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can leave patients feeling fatigued or nauseous. Everyday responsibilities—cooking, light cleaning, laundry, and personal care—can quickly become overwhelming. Caregivers can step in to help with these tasks, giving seniors the rest they need while ensuring their home remains safe and comfortable.

All-On-4 Dental Implants: A Reason To Smile Again

All-on-Four: One Full Arch Of Teeth, Four Dental Implants

To fully understand this remarkable technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth. Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-on-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

It can be scary to get implants for the first time. Most of that fear is probably due to the uncertainty, so here is the step-by-step process for getting an All-on-Four dental implant.

First, your dentist will want to make sure your comfortable, so either local or general anesthesia will be administered. Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

Next, they will begin the implantation process. This means they will insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards

back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you

Helping Fellow Cancer Survivors Through Therapy and Emotional Healing

Navigating cancer treatment serendipitously led Marissa Gilbert to become a licensed clinical social worker and therapist to support others with the emotional healing she found missing after treatment, and a critical piece of her cancer survivorship journey. This led her to understand the difference between coping and healing and the connective tissue of medical trauma.

Her therapeutic style is personalized and collaborative—meeting people exactly where they are and focusing on progress rather than perfection. She helps clients restore safety in their bodies and rebuild trust in themselves as they heal. She works with clients healing from medical trauma, including cancer, chronic illness and pain. Her work also includes a dual diagnosis focus including addiction and ADHD.

In particular, Marissa specializes in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a proven trauma therapy that helps clients process overwhelming medical experiences like cancer or chronic illness. She helps clients reduce their triggers in medical settings (e.g. anxiety before appointments or scanxiety), rebuild trust in their bodies and experience emotional healing. Marissa practices an integrative approach, also utilizing somatic-based practices and Internal Family Systems-inspired techniques.

In addition to individual sessions, Marissa offers couples and group therapy designed for healthier relationships and rebuilding joy in daily life. Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process, and seeking ways to curb this process is a challenge. There are many products on the market that claim to re-grow hair, but the results are mixed. Some work for some people, and for others, not so well.

Surgically transplanting hair has come a long way over the past decade - to the point where follicular unit grafting (FUG) is now more widely accepted. It’s not like the old-style plugs people used to get.

These grafts are indistinguishable from your natural hair and are probably more durable than your natural hair in the long run.

While your natural hair still present on the top and front of your scalp may continue to thin or fall out, the grafted hairs from the sides and back of your head are more likely to be there permanently.

The latest procedure for hair transplantation is follicular unit extraction (FUE), where each hair is harvested and individually placed in a new location on your scalp. By doing this there are no scars to deal with, and the procedure is more tolerable and may even be a little safer.

One of the first FUE devices to be cleared by the FDA for follicular unit harvesting and implantation is the NeoGraft® system, which delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technique in the hair transplant industry.

This system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles, which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. This automated hair transplantation system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only “no touch” implantation technology.

It provides exact harvesting and placement, delivering natural looking results. This advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scarring, minimal downtime, and a shorter

recovery period. Hair restoration with NeoGraft is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell.

How the Procedure Works:

Step One: Donor Hair Removal

The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone.

Step Two: Separation of the

Follicular Units

Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate.

Step Three:

Creation of the Recipient Sites

Step Four: Placement of the Hair Graft

The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. Grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results.

The hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he or she has designed specifically for you.

ing boney structures, it is highly recommended to start treatment before the face and jaws have finished growing.

By age seven, the six-year molars (adult first molars) and incisors have usually erupted. After the first molars erupt the space available for the front teeth does not increase as a child grows. To the contrary, in most people after the permanent molars erupt, the space available for the front teeth decreases with age.

Early treatment can also regulate the width of the dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth or the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaw.

A majority of children will not require orthodontic procedures until

their teenage years, however an early exam allows the orthodontist to monitor the child’s growth and development and if indicated begin treatment at the most appropriate time.

If your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, schedule an orthodontic consultation appointment. You don’t need to have a referral to see an orthodontist.

Many pro-actively schedule a consultation appointment either as a new patient or to seek a second opinion.

However, you should see your family dentist for professional cleanings and check-ups every six months, or more often if recommended.

Early treatment may prevent serious problems from developing and may make treatment less complicated.

Healthy Smiles and Sleep For Your Child

Proper breathing during sleep is crucial for the overall well-being of children, yet many parents may not be fully aware of potential issues related to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD), which includes pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

blocked during sleep, is often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids and a lack of tongue space. It differs from adult OSA, as it may manifest alongside behavioral issues and daytime sleepiness in children. The Importance Of Proper Sleep and Open Airways

For Children

During the first 18 months of a child’s life, crucial growth and developmental milestones occur, many of which are related to facial development. Ensuring proper breathing is essential for a child’s health and development, impacting facial features, jaw development, and overall growth. Mouth breathing can set off a chain reaction of issues, altering the growth of the lower and upper jaws, midface, and nasal bones, ultimately affecting the child’s facial balance.

SRBD refer to disturbances in normal breathing patterns during sleep, ranging from common snoring to more severe pauses in breathing known as apnea events. These interruptions can lead to sleep deprivation and a variety of health complications. In the case of children, untreated SRDB can result in developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges, potentially leading to conditions like allergies, ADD/ADHD, and depression.

Pediatric OSA, a condition where the airway is partially or completely

Children with SRDB may present a range of symptoms. In the case of pediatric OSA, symptoms may involve snoring, breathing pauses, restlessness, and coughing or choking episodes during sleep.

Contrary to conventional belief, pediatric dentists with specialized training are well-equipped to address symptoms related to sleep and airway conditions. The airway, mode of breathing, and malocclusion are closely interconnected and should be addressed early and holistically by dentists. Advanced technology, such as cone

Oral Cancer: What You Need To Know

Although oral cancer may not get as much attention as some other cancers, it is no less serious. In the United States, oral cancer is responsible for one death every hour. The danger lies in the fact that it is often not detected until it has reached an advanced stage. At that point, the odds of survival decrease significantly—only about six in ten people live beyond five years after diagnosis and treatment.

The good news is that oral cancer can often be caught early. With early detection, the survival rate jumps

to 80% or higher, making regular screenings one of the most powerful tools in saving lives. What many don’t realize is that oral cancer screenings are part of routine dental checkups, which means every visit to the dentist is also an opportunity for prevention.

What Happens During a Screening?

An oral cancer examination is quick, painless, and non-invasive. Dentists look closely at the lining tissues of the mouth, lips, and tongue for small changes or abnormalities. The exam includes both visual and tactile (touch) assessments. Your dentist may check for:

• Red or white patches on oral tissues

• Sores that don’t heal within a few weeks

• Unusual lumps or swellings

If something suspicious is found, your dentist can perform a biopsy— removing a small tissue sample for laboratory testing. This is the only way to confirm a diagnosis, but catching potential warning signs early makes all the difference.

Who Is At Risk?

Oral cancer was once thought of primarily as an older person’s disease, but trends are changing. While those over 40 remain at higher risk, younger adults are the fastest-growing group of patients. The primary reason is the increasing spread of the human papillomavirus (HPV16), a sexually transmitted infection strongly linked to oral cancers.

Other risk factors include:

• Tobacco use (smoking or smokeless tobacco)

• Heavy or long-term alcohol consumption

• Prolonged sun exposure, which increases the risk of lip cancer

• A family history of cancer or genetic predisposition

Even individuals without these risk factors can develop oral cancer, which is why regular screenings are so critical.

Signs To Watch For

While many oral changes are harmless, some can be early signs of cancer. Warning symptoms include:

• Persistent sores in the mouth, lips, or tongue

• Unexplained bleeding or numbness

• Difficulty swallowing or persistent sore throat

• Lumps, thickened tissues, or color changes that don’t resolve within 2–3 weeks

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them—schedule an appointment with your dentist or physician right away.

The Bottom Line

Oral cancer may be life-threatening, but it doesn’t have to be. Regular dental checkups, combined with screenings and patient awareness, provide the best defense. Early detection dramatically improves survival rates and allows for less invasive treatment options.

By staying proactive with your dental care and paying attention to changes in your oral health, you can take meaningful steps toward protecting yourself against this oftenoverlooked disease.

Let me start with something important: I’m not against fluoride.

In fact, I’ve used it every day in my dental practice for almost 30 years—across hospitals, universities, the military, private clinics, and even on Native American reservations. I’ve seen fluoride varnish reverse early cavities, and fluoride toothpaste strengthen enamel in the children who needed it most.

But now, like many health professionals who care deeply about children’s well-being, I’m asking a serious question: Is putting fluoride into everyone’s tap water still the best way to protect our kids’ teeth?

It might have made sense 80 years ago. But with everything we now know— about fluoride, nutrition, modern health risks, and exposure sources—it’s time to take another look.

A Strange Origin: From Industrial Waste To Public Health Policy

Fluoride didn’t enter public water systems because of dentistry. It began as industrial pollution.

In the early 1900s, major corporations like ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America), DuPont, and fertilizer manufacturers were facing lawsuits. Their factories were releasing toxic fluoride gases that damaged crops, sickened livestock, and harmed communities nearby.

Meanwhile, a dentist in Colorado— Dr. Frederick McKay—noted that patients had unusual brown stains on their teeth. Oddly, those teeth were less prone to cavities. By 1931, ALCOA chemist H.V. Churchill found the cause: natural water in some areas contained fluoride—up to 13.7 parts per million (ppm).

Suddenly, fluoride wasn’t just a pollutant. It had a potential upside.

Then came the pivot. In 1939, Dr. Gerald Cox of the Mellon Institute— closely tied to ALCOA—suggested adding fluoride to drinking water to prevent tooth decay. This wasn’t driven by public demand—it served an industrial purpose.

Dr. H. Trendley Dean at the National Institutes of Health later promoted fluoridation. But his research would eventually be criticized for poor design, missing control groups, and cherry-picked data. Investigative journalist Christopher Bryson, in The Fluoride Deception, highlighted how politics and flawed research helped launch a national policy.

In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first U.S. city to fluoridate its water—not with medical-grade fluoride,

It’s Time To Rethink Water Fluoridation

but with an industrial byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing.

The public was never consulted.

What the Science Actually Supports: Topical Fluoride Works Fluoride used on the teeth— in toothpaste or varnish—does work. It reverses early decay, strengthens enamel, and protects against acid attacks. That’s why pediatric dentists like me use it every day.

But swallowed fluoride? That’s a different story.

Drinking fluoride doesn’t do much to prevent cavities between teeth—the most common and hardest kind to reach in children.

Does Water Fluoridation Still Make Sense?

Despite nearly 80 years of water fluoridation, here’s what we see:

• Over 1 in 5 children (ages 6–11) in the U.S. have untreated cavities.

• Countries like Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan don’t fluoridate their water—and yet have similar or better dental health outcomes.

• These countries emphasize topical fluoride, education, and access to care—not mass exposure through drinking water.

Even in affluent communities, interproximal decay—cavities between teeth—is on the rise.Water fluoridation does little to prevent these.

Fluoride Exposure Is Coming From Everywhere

Today’s children are exposed to fluoride from multiple sources:

• Swallowed toothpaste (especially in toddlers)

• Foods and drinks made with fluoridated water

• Tea, processed juices, and infant formula

• Pesticides on produce

• Mechanically processed meats

Depending on diet and behavior:

• Infants may ingest 1.2–1.6 mg/day

• Children: 1.6–2.2 mg/day

• Adults: up to 2.9 mg/day—or more in hot weather or during exercise.

Fluoride is quickly absorbed in the gut, but only partially excreted. In children (with immature kidneys) and in adults with kidney disease, much more fluoride is retained in the body.Over time, it accumulates—in the bones, brain, and pineal gland.

And It’s Not Just Swallowing

– It’s Bathing, Showering, and Washing

Fluoride exposure doesn’t only come through drinking water.

A 1984 study found that up to 64% of water-borne contaminants—including fluoride—can enter the body through the skin during activities like showering, bathing, and hand-washing.

While European health authorities argue that dermal absorption is minimal under typical pH levels, other experts note that repeated exposure through warm

water may increase uptake, especially in vulnerable individuals.

In short, fluoride exposure isn’t limited to what we drink. It touches every part of daily life.

So...Who Oversees The Fluoride That Goes Into Our Water?

Oversight of fluoride in tap water is fragmented—and unclear:

• The EPA sets a maximum contaminant limit (4.0 mg/L), but it doesn’t promote or regulate fluoridation programs.

• The FDA regulates fluoride in toothpaste and supplements—but not in municipal water systems.

• The CDC offers guidelines (currently 0.7 mg/L), but has no enforcement authority—fluoridation decisions are left to local and state agencies.

And the fluoride used? It’s not pharmaceutical-grade. It’s fluorosilicic acid, an industrial waste product captured from fertilizer plant smokestacks.

Federal law doesn’t require each shipment to be tested. Trace levels of arsenic, lead, and radionuclides have occasionally been detected—even if below legal thresholds.

No single agency is fully responsible for its quality or safety.

What About Low-Income Communities?

Supporters often say fluoridation helps poor children. But here’s the reality:

• Baltimore, MD has fluoridated water— and high rates of childhood decay.

• Los Angeles has been fluoridated since 1961—yet low-income areas still face a dental health crisis.

• Detroit and Cleveland, both fluoridated, show similar patterns.

The issue isn’t lack of fluoride. It’s lack of education, prevention, access to care, and nutrition counseling.

The Bigger Picture:

Diet, Development, and Decay

Children today eat softer, more processed foods. They chew less. That affects more than digestion—it changes their faces:

• Smaller jaws

• Narrower dental arches

• Crowded or rotated teeth

• Harder-to-clean spaces between teeth

These structural changes make interproximal cavities more likely—regardless of fluoride.

And yet, policy still centers around fluoridation. We’re missing the forest for the trees.

Who Really Benefits?

• Fertilizer manufacturers — They profit by selling fluorosilicic acid, a byproduct that would otherwise require costly disposal. Turning industrial waste into a revenue stream provides substantial financial benefit.

• Chemical distributors — They buy fluoride compounds at low cost and resell them to municipal water systems at a markup as part of their treatment contracts.

• Public agencies — By promoting fluoridation as a low-cost preventive measure, agencies maintain the appearance of an inexpensive public health policy, even though dental costs have continued to rise.

Importantly, despite common belief, aluminum companies do not profit from municipal water fluoridation. ALCOA, the largest U.S. aluminum producer, sold its fluoride production facility over 70 years ago and no longer benefits from these sales.

Is There a Smarter Approach?

Many countries already know:

• Use fluoride varnish at dental visits

• Apply silver diamine fluoride to stop small cavities

• Offer supervised brushing programs in schools

• Provide parent education on bottle use and nutrition

• Improve access to care for underserved children

These strategies are ethical, efficient, and effective.

Final Thoughts: Awareness First

Fluoride is a fascinating story—part science, part history, and part public policy. What began as an industrial challenge grew into one of the largest public health experiments in history. Along the way, we’ve learned much about fluoride’s benefits, its limitations, and its risks.

This article isn’t meant to demand change or push an agenda. It’s meant to share what we know now—so that parents, communities, and health professionals can have more informed conversations.

A good comparison is antibiotics. When used properly, antibiotics can save lives and prevent suffering. But when they’re given too broadly, too often, or in the wrong way, they can cause harm—such as antibiotic resistance or unintended side effects. Fluoride, too, can be extremely beneficial when used topically and in controlled doses. But applying it universally through drinking water exposes people in ways that may not be necessary or even optimal today.

The truth is layered: fluoride can help, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. By understanding its history, its biology, and the many sources of exposure, we can better place it in context with modern nutrition, preventive care, and overall child health.

Ultimately, the goal is not alarm, but awareness. With knowledge, families can ask better questions, weigh the evidence, and make thoughtful decisions for their children and their communities.

Chemo Brain and Oncology Massage

What

Is “Chemo Brain”?

“Chemo brain,” or cancer-related cognitive impairment, refers to mental fog and cognitive issues that can occur before, during, or after cancer treatment. Despite the name, it’s not just a product of chemotherapy. It can also result from radiation, hormone therapy, surgery, and the stress of living with cancer. Symptoms include:

• Difficulty concentrating: Trouble focusing, multitasking, or following conversations.

• Searching for words: Struggling to recall or using incorrect words.

• Slower thinking: Thinking through complex problems takes more time and effort.

• Mental fatigue: A sense of brain tiredness or even pain.

These symptoms can be frustrating and affect daily life, relationships, and work performance.

What Can You Do?

As common as it is, chemo brain is poorly understood. However, evidence supports three main tools to help:

• Brain training : Keep your mind active with puzzles, riddles, or memory games. Do something different each day.

• Counseling : A skilled counselor can help you track patterns, man-

Hage stressors, and develop coping strategies.

• Connecting mindfully: Find ways to slow down and observe your emotions and the sensations in your body. This might feel especially hard during cancer treatment, so try a few things and see what works. Consider taking a meditation class, practicing yoga or tai chi, or receiving bodywork like reiki or massage.

The Role Of Oncology Massage

Though chemo brain affects thinking, it’s closely tied to physical and emotional health. Stress, fatigue, pain, and sleep issues all play a role— and oncology massage addresses these factors together. Here’s how:

• Reducing Stress: Cancer treatment can put the body in a state of chronic stress, raising cortisol levels that impair focus. Massage helps lower cortisol and increases serotonin and dopamine, enhancing mood and clarity.

• Managing Pain : Pain can cloud thinking. Massage releases endorphins (natural painkillers) and serotonin, helping both pain and digestion. Gentle touch can also relieve nausea.

• Improving Sleep and Reducing Fatigue : Both fatigue and poor sleep are major contributors to chemo brain. Oncology massage can help improve sleep quality, allowing the brain to rest and recharge.

• Improving Focus and Memory : Dopamine helps you maintain focus, and serotonin helps you remember facts and events. Both of these hormones are part of the body’s relaxation response.

Oncology massage is a proactive tool for managing a complex side effect of cancer treatment, which can help you heal as a whole person—physically, emotionally, and cognitively.

inflammation, or vascular activity. These indicators can appear years before other tests detect abnormalities, making it a powerful tool for early awareness and prevention.

Reducing Risk Factors

While some risks, such as genetic predispositions, cannot be eliminated, many lifestyle choices play a role in breast health. Risk-reducing strategies include:

• Avoiding estrogen-based medications when possible

• Reducing sugar, soda, alcohol, and processed carbs

• Adopting an anti-inflammatory diet

• Practicing dry brushing underarms toward the chest

• Using essential oils such as frankincense, lavender, and lemon

Radiation exposure is also preventable, and thermography provides a radiation-free alternative for monitoring breast health.

Orthodontic and Structural Concerns

Mouth breathing can also influence how the jaws and teeth develop. When breathing through the nose, the tongue naturally rests against the roof of the mouth, encouraging the upper jaw to grow wide and balanced. With mouth breathing, the tongue rests lower, which can contribute to narrower arches, crowded teeth, and misalignment.

From page 32

Treatment goals encompass the elimination of detrimental habits, guiding optimal cranial, jaw, and facial development, preventing dental misalignment, and enhancing airway health and oxygen sufficiency. Various therapies, including oral appliances, myofunctional therapy and positive airway pressure therapy, can effectively alleviate symptoms.

Children are particularly susceptible because their facial bones and jaws are still developing. If mouth breathing persists during these critical years, it can interfere with proper growth and significantly increase the likelihood of needing orthodontic treatment later in life.

Whole-Body Effects

The consequences of mouth breathing extend beyond the mouth. Nasal breathing supports optimal oxygen flow and promotes restful sleep, whereas chronic mouth breathing is linked with snoring, restless sleep, and sleep-disordered breathing. These effects can reduce energy, affect con-

centration, and in children, influence growth and behavior.

What

You Can Do

If you or your child consistently mouth breathes, especially during sleep, you should consult your dentist or physician. Determining the underlying cause is essential and may involve addressing allergies, evaluating airway health, or providing orthodontic guidance to support proper jaw development and long-term oral health.

Supporting Healthy Breathing

It is recognized that oral health is deeply connected to overall wellness. Dental offices evaluate how breathing habits impact your smile and your health. By identifying signs of mouth breathing early, they can help reduce the risk of dental problems, guide healthy development in children, and improve quality of life for patients of all ages.

Breathing through the nose is natural, but it does not always come easily. With careful evaluation and appropriate care, we can help restore healthy breathing patterns and protect your smile for the long term.

Reminders and Transportation

Cancer treatments often involve multiple medications and frequent medical visits. A caregiver can keep track of prescriptions, ensure doses aren’t missed, and provide safe transportation to and from appointments. Having someone to take notes during medical visits also helps ensure instructions aren’t forgotten.

activity, which promotes both physical and emotional well-being. Activities like gentle walks, music, or favorite hobbies can lift spirits and provide a sense of normalcy.

Know When To Ask For Help

Being a caregiver is rewarding, but it can also be overwhelming. It’s important to recognize when extra support is needed—whether that means respite care, professional caregiving assistance, or community resources. Help is available, and reaching out ensures both you and your loved one have the care and encouragement you need.

for HPV vaccination among eligible patients (men and women), emphasizing both its proven safety and its effectiveness. Preventing, detecting, and treating cervical cancer are essential elements of comprehensive reproductive healthcare.

Another powerful preventive tool is the HPV vaccine, which is most effective when given before exposure to the virus but can benefit women (and men) well into adulthood. By protecting against the high-risk strains of HPV, the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of cervical cancer.

Signs To Watch For

Cervical cancer may not cause symptoms in its early stages, which is why screenings are so important. As the disease progresses, some women may experience:

• Unusual vaginal bleeding (between periods, after sex, or after menopause)

• Pelvic pain or discomfort

• Pain during intercourse

• Unusual vaginal discharge

If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t delay—schedule an appointment with your gynecologist.

Taking Charge Of Your Health

Cervical cancer doesn’t wait, but the earlier it’s caught, the greater the chance for successful treatment.

Regular checkups, routine screenings, and open conversations with your healthcare provider are key steps in protecting yourself.

Your health is worth prioritizing. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors, ask whether the HPV vaccine is right for you, and stay on schedule with your Pap and HPV screenings. A few proactive steps today can help safeguard your health for years to come.

The encouraging news is that even modest weight loss can make a measurable difference. Research shows that losing 5–10% of body weight can lower levels of harmful hormones and inflammation, improving overall health and reducing cancer risk.

• Regular physical activity: Aim for

Emotional Healing From Medical Trauma

Many assume that once treatment for cancer ends and you have completed physical healing, you are completely recovered. But maybe you are experiencing flashbacks from treatment that is interrupting your sleep. Or you feel dread for the next doctor’s appointment that you will receive bad news again because it has already happened once. This is called medical trauma and is more common and normal than most people realize. Cancer doesn’t just affect your body, it impacts your mind, emotions, relationships and sense of identity.

What is Medical Trauma?

Medical trauma is the psychological and emotional distress from medical care that feels overwhelming or out of your control. It might stem from receiving a cancer diagnosis, enduring unexpected side effects, managing a chronic illness or navigating long hospital stays. For many, the sense of vulnerability and uncertainty can feel just as unsettling as the illness itself. Recognizing that your experience was traumatic can be deeply empowering.

• Routine checkups: Regular screenings can detect cancer early, when treatment is most effective.

Obesity is not just a matter of appearance—it has profound effects on long-term health and cancer risk. By making sustainable lifestyle changes, individuals can lower their risk, improve overall well-being, and take proactive steps toward cancer prevention.

• Anxiety before scans, labs or follow-ups (our friend scanxiety)

• Panic or dread in medical settings even when there for someone else

• Feeling numb, exhausted or emotionally flat

• Trouble trusting doctors or your own body again

• Grief around fertility, body changes, or identity shifts Hypervigilance about every new symptom

Why Emotional Healing Matters

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and it’s not just anxiety or an “overreaction” – it is your nervous system’s natural way of remembering past threats and trying to keep you safe. Ignoring the emotional side of recovery can make long-term healing harder. Stress and avoidance may interfere with follow-up care, while unprocessed memories can drain energy and worsen physical symptoms.

Emotional Healing Tools

• Therapeutic Support: Bottom-up approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) focus on regulating the nervous system and promoting safety and stability to help the mind and body process what happened.

• Mind-Body Practices: Exploring practices like meditation, deep breathing or reiki provide focus on the present moment to reduce anxiety and negative thought cycles.

• Connection: Sharing your story or listening to others that share your story reduces isolation, restores trust and normalizes your grief. Whether you are looking for a group related to fertility or for caregivers there are many options.

Emotional healing is a vital part of recovery and isn’t about “fixing” yourself – it’s about learning how to live meaningfully and gently with what you’ve been through.
