Poor circulation may be responsible for causing erectile dysfunction in as much as 50 to 70 percent of men who develop the condition. Now we are happy to add expanded services! Our goal is to extend the healthy lifespan of our patients by using a comprehensive, integrative approach to achieve the most effective results. We believe that Beauty Is a Reflection of Health and Wellness. We want you to be as beautiful on the outside as you are healthy on the inside.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Understanding Kidney Stones Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
By Mara Holton, MD Anne Arundel Urology
Kidney stones are a common and painful condition that affect millions of people worldwide. They occur when certain substances in urine— such as calcium, oxalate, and uric acid—crystallize and stick together, forming hard deposits. These stones can range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball, and depending on their size, they may pass on their own or require medical or surgical treatment.
What Are Kidney Stones?
Kidney stones are solid pieces of material that form in the kidneys when the concentration of certain minerals in your urine becomes too high. The stones may stay in the kidney or travel through the urinary tract, which includes the ureters (the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), the bladder, and the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body).
Types Of Kidney Stones
There are several types of kidney stones, classified based on their
composition:
1. Calcium Stones: The most common type, typically made of calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate. Oxalate is a naturally occurring substance found in some foods.
2. Uric Acid Stones: More common in people who don’t drink enough fluids, have a high-protein diet, or have gout.
3. Struvite Stones : These can form after a urinary tract infection and grow quickly.
4. Cystine Stones: Rare, occurring in
Innovative Treatments
people with a hereditary disorder called cystinuria.
Causes Of Kidney Stones
Kidney stones form when your urine contains more crystal-forming substances than the fluid in your urine can dilute. Risk factors for developing kidney stones include:
• Dehydration: Not drinking enough water can lead to concentrated urine, making it easier for stones to form.
• Diet: A diet high in salt, protein, and sugar can increase your risk. Foods high in oxalates, such as spinach, nuts, and chocolate, can also contribute.
• Family Or Personal History : If someone in your family has had kidney stones, you’re more likely to develop them.
• Medical Conditions : Conditions like gout, hyperparathyroidism, and urinary tract infections can increase your risk.
• Medications: Certain medications, such as diuretics, antacids, or medications for seizures, may increase the likelihood of stone formation.
Symptoms Of Kidney Stones
Symptoms of kidney stones may not be noticeable until the stone begins to move within the kidney or into the ureter. When this happens, symptoms can include:
• Severe Pain: Often in the back or side, below the ribs. The pain may spread to the lower abdomen and groin.
• Painful Urination: You may feel discomfort or a burning sensation when urinating.
• Blood In the Urine: Your urine may appear pink, red, or brown.
• Cloudy or Foul-Smelling Urine: This could indicate an infection.
• Nausea and Vomiting : These symptoms often accompany the pain.
• Frequent Urination: You may feel an urgent need to urinate more often than usual.
• Fevers & Infection : In some cases, stones can be associated with bladder, kidney or even systemic infections such as sepsis.

Improve Your Health This New Year: Take Care Of Your Teeth and Gums
By Karl A. Smith, DDS, MS
While we know eating right and tossing out the cigarettes are all part of our typical New Year’s resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle, many of us are not aware of the overall health benefits of taking good care of our teeth and gums.
Tooth decay, plaque and periodontal (gum) disease is a health problem that doesn’t normally get a lot of New Year’s resolution attention. In fact, many adults with gum disease are not aware of the diagnosis, symptoms or its lasting effects. Medical evidence concludes that poor oral health, gum disease, cavities, plaque buildup, etc., can contribute to other problems in the body.
The Causes and Symptoms Of Gum Disease
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support your teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis:
• gums become swollen and red due to inflammation
• teeth and gums often bleed while brushing
In the more serious form of periodontal disease — called periodontitis:
• gums pull away from the tooth as infection settles in
• supporting gum tissues are destroyed
• supportive jaw bone can be lost
• your teeth will loosen and eventually fall out
Diagnosing Periodontal Disease
Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the treatment and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease. They are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria as they receive extensive training in these areas during their three additional years of education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
Make it your New Year’s resolution to take better care of your mouth and teeth.
Brush twice daily: Your mouth is the front line for battling the bacteria.
Floss daily: Your toothbrush can’t reach between your teeth. Daily flossing cleans the spaces between teeth.
Have at least two dental cleanings a year: Your dental hygienist supplements your daily brushing and flossing.
Get a regular annual dental checkup: Preventative dentistry is better for your health.
Visit a periodontist for gum evaluation: All adult patients should
have a full periodontal exam with charting accomplished once a year. This provides you and your Dentist with a baseline measurement to record the pocket depth (space between your teeth and gums), the presence of gum disease, gum recession, bleeding, tooth mobility and plaque buildup.
Eat, drink and be wary: The enemy of oral health is the group of natural bacteria that thrive on sugar and dissolve the protective enamel covering the teeth.
Consider a new and stronger smile: Getting dental implants and crowns for missing or broken teeth isn’t a luxury; these problems may leave you with shifting teeth and a vulnerability to gum disease. Improving your dental health and preventing tooth decay can have a large health impact than just a healthy mouth and brighter teeth. Take control of your dental health and make an appointment with an experienced periodontist today.

Do You Have Plantar Warts?
By Howard Horowitz, DPM Bowie Foot & Ankle
Warts are one of several soft tissue conditions of the foot that can be quite painful. They are caused by a virus, which generally invades the skin through small or invisible cuts and abrasions. They can appear anywhere on the skin, but technically, only those on the sole are properly called plantar warts.
Identification Problems
Source Of the Virus
The plantar wart is often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground where the virus is lurking. The causative virus thrives in warm, moist environments, making infection a common occurrence in communal bathing facilities. If left untreated, warts can grow and spread. Plantar warts are spread by touching, scratching, or even by contact with skin shed from another wart. The wart may also bleed, another route for spreading.
When plantar warts develop on the weight-bearing areas of the foot – the ball of the foot, or the heel, for example – they can be the source of sharp, burning pain. Pain occurs
Most warts are harmless, even though they may be painful. They are often mistaken for corns or calluses. The wart, however, is a viral infection. It is wise to consult a podiatric physician when any suspicious growth or eruption is detected on the skin of the foot in order to ensure a correct diagnosis.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder Affects Your Entire Body
By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
The human body is a truly remarkable thing. It is like a finely tuned machine when it runs well, but when it does not, then it really can mess up your life. The TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is an integral part of whole-body
health for all of us. When the disc within the jaw joint slips off the top of the jawbone (the condyle), it can and will pinch upon nerves and blood vessels in that area. And know that there are a lot of nerves and blood vessels traveling through the TM joints!
Displaced discs create an inflammatory reaction within our skull. This
can often lead to head and neck pain that can travel down and throughout the rest of the body. Osteopath doctors (along with TMJ specialists) are well aware that a slipped disc in the jaw can directly correlate to ACL problems in the knees. It may seem far fetched to some of our dear readers, but it is quite true.
An easier to understand concept is
Typical Dental Office
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan
that if the discs are slipped off the condyles, this will cause an asymmetry to the jaw and it will tip to one side or the other. Then, the neck compensates by tipping as well, and over time this can lead to turning and twisting of the back. The importance of the TM joint cannot be understated. Your entire body depends on this little joint being symmetrical and with the discs in proper position. Otherwise, the whole body is affected. When there is a TMJ problem, quite often the neck is also out of alignment. This can contribute to OSA – obstructive sleep apnea – because a twisted neck tightens up the airway and reduces the ability of the body to breathe properly. Then you add on the inflammation in the joints and you end up with a very upset system. By treating the TMJ disorder, this helps to get the joints lined up more symmetrically, helps the discs to get back on the condyle where they belong, and helps the neck to line up better as well. All these can contribute to better sleep and better breathing.
One of the far less discussed aspects of TMJ disorder is a little thing called happiness. That’s right, if you have TMJ disorder you are far more likely to live with pain, lack of sleep, less ability to focus, and a whole host of other problems to deal with. And because of all the health problems associated with TMJ disorder, you are nowhere near as likely to be happy with your life.
As a TMD practitioner, every day of the week people come to the office and tell me how they now have their lives back. They can sleep better, focus better, have less pain and enjoy being with friends and family so much more. By wearing simple little devices in their mouth, they can function and feel better than ever before. This is what TMJ treatment can do for you.

GOT GUT ISSUES?
All year round, both peri- and postmenopausal women are more susceptible to anxiety and depression than premenopausal women. With the additional work the holidays bring, the stress can really take a toll on women over 40.
That’s because estrogen plays a major role in how women experience stress, anxiety and depression. In fact, women’s risk for anxiety and depressive disorders is about twice that of men! Those same hormone fluctuations that cause PMS throughout a woman’s menstruating years only get more drastic during menopause, and intensely affect mood and mood disorders.
Two parts of the brain, the amygdala and hippocampus, are particularly sensitive to estrogen fluctuations AND essential to mood regulation. Science has shown that a form of estrogen – estradiol – supports blood flow in the brain. Estradiol also has a positive effect on the development of nerve cells in the brain.
The synthesis of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin is tied to estradiol, and it impacts several other neurotransmitters closely tied to mood, including dopamine (which is linked to depression).
While estrogen fluctuates during perimenopause, it ultimately decreases dramatically. Postmenopausal women have only 10% of the estrogen of their younger, premenopausal selves. This is believed to contribute to the uptick in diagnoses of anxiety and depression in postmenopausal women.
Research shows that replenishing estradiol levels can reinvigorate the brain. Two studies have revealed that postmenopausal women using hormone therapy (HT) have larger hippocampi than non-HT-users and men. Another study demonstrated that women using HT for at least two years had increased blood flow in the brain than the non-HT-users.
So why not stop suffering and give yourself (and your family!) the gift of hormones this holiday season?
A New Foundation For the New Year
As we head towards the end of another difficult year and into the holiday season, there is an opportunity to recalibrate, reverse a trajectory and set new goals and create new habits. Despite the best of intentions, it seems that the pull of our habits often outweighs our commitment to create a foundation of well-being.
So what can you do to accomplish two of the most common health desires, which are to lose weight and just feel better? First thing is to choose
moving in the direction of health.
One of the most powerful avenues available to accomplish both is to go through a detoxification process, a cleansing from the inside out. The western medical model does not deal much with detoxification though almost all other paradigms of health do regard detoxification as important, even critical.
So What Does This Mean From a Western Medical Standpoint?
The human body has a remarkable capacity to produce hormones and other compounds as well as to interact with the environment. Every compound created by the body and what is allowed into the body by the skin, respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract must be dealt with so that the body does not get poisoned by the waste products that are generated by our metabolism.
The world we live in presents us with an ever-increasing burden of poisons, toxins, chemicals, and compounds that the human body has

Obesity is a disease of excess fat deposition throughout the body. It is caused by a complex interaction of genetics, individual metabolism, lifestyle, behavior and environmental factors.
Most individuals that suffer from obesity have a long history of gradual weight gain over many years that has been difficult to manage. The excess weight affects most organ systems of the body over time. Most people know about the common effects such as diabetes and high blood pressure
but there are many other effects.
Cardiovascular disease can manifest as high blood pressure, heart failure, coronary artery disease with chest pains and a risk of early heart attacks, and leg swelling from disorders of the veins.
Respiratory disease is one of the most overlooked problems associated with obesity. Many individuals who are struggling with their weight also struggle with shortness of breath when active. They get winded if they walk long distances, run, or even climb a flight of stairs. Others have problems such as sleep apnea that is often undiagnosed.
There are many metabolic effects such as a predisposition to diabetes mellitus that can be very difficult to control and at times requiring a combination of insulin and tablets. Other metabolic problems include high cholesterol and gout.
The gastrointestinal system can be affected with problems such as heartburn (reflux, GERD), gallbladder disease, and fatty liver disease.

Exploring Stress Management With Medical Marijuana During the Holidays
By Sharron Sample, CEO Dispensary Works
The holiday season is often portrayed as a joyful time, but for many, it can also be a source of stress. From managing holiday shopping to navigating family dynamics, the pressures of the season can quickly become overwhelming. While stress is a normal part of life, chronic stress
can have serious implications on both physical and mental health. In recent years, medical marijuana has emerged as a potential tool for managing stress, offering a natural alternative for individuals seeking relief during this hectic time of year.
Understanding Stress and Its Impact
Stress is the body’s response to challenges or demands, often manifesting as feelings of tension, worry, or anxiety. While occasional stress can be beneficial, motivating us to meet deadlines or handle difficult situations, chronic stress can be harmful. It can lead to various health issues, including heart disease, digestive problems, sleep disorders, and mental health concerns such as anxiety and depression. During the holidays,

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.
Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.
An implant is a small titanium
screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.
You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, longlasting foundation for your new teeth.
Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better

Meet Deborah Mallu, DVM, CVA, MAc
I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian since I was five years old. At 14, I began working in veterinary clinics, and caring for pets has been my lifelong passion. I earned my DVM from The Ohio State University in 1977. After ten years in clinical practice, I sought a new approach to pet health, discovering veterinary acupuncture in 1988, and became certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, opening the door to holistic medicine.
In 1993, I sold my practice and moved to Sedona, AZ, embarking on a spiritual journey where I became a Tibetan Buddhist nun from 2002 to 2023. I believe in the equality of all life and aim to relieve suffering. In 1994, I pursued Energy Healing and completed a self-healing journey.
After volunteering during Hurricane Katrina, I worked with Tara’s Babies Animal Sanctuary and Garuda Aviary Parrot Sanctuary. In 2006, I returned to Maryland, joining Veterinary Holistic Care, and later co-founded Holistic Veterinary Healing in 2013. I earned my Master’s in Human Acupuncture in 2010, treating both hu man and animal patients until 2016, when I dedicated myself to animal care after the passing of my partner, Dr. Kitty Raichura. I am certified in Medical Ozone Therapy and a Fear Free Practitioner. I live in Germantown with my two dogs, Bodhi and Jack, and enjoy time with friends, family, and my pets.
Meet Ying Ngo, DVM, CVA
I’ve always had a passion for medicine, growing up with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). As a child, my dad taught me Gua Sha and acupressure to help with his back pain, sparking my interest in various healing modalities. Though I loved animals, I initially thought medical school was the only path to practice medicine. Before discovering veterinary medicine, I worked in acupuncture clinics, shadowed at hospitals, volunteered with the Red Cross at Walter Reed, and conducted research at UMD and the FDA.
In 2015, I was introduced to Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) by Dr. Allison Marshall, and I immediately knew I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine. After two years of shadowing veterinary acupuncturists and a lab animal medicine clinician, I earned a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 and attended the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM).
I’ve developed a strong interest in integrative medicine, surgery, pathology, and exotics. I also worked in the Clinical Pathology lab and participated in research at VMCVM. In 2020, I began my acupuncture (CVA) training with Chi University and completed my DVM in 2021. My goal is to combine holistic and conventional medicine to provide the best care for animals.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, playing golf, spoiling my pet rat, and performing lion dances with my troupe, Choy Wun, especially during Lunar New Year.
Meet Susan Jones, DVM, CVA
My journey in veterinary medicine began at age 5 when I received a kitten, only to lose her in a tragic accident. This inspired me to pursue a career in saving pets. I attended veterinary summer programs at Tuskegee University and Michigan State, earned my Biology degree from UMBC in 2003, and graduated from TUSVM in 2007.
I worked in Las Vegas for three years, gaining experience in routine care, emergency medicine, surgery, and dentistry. My interest in holistic medicine grew after learning about Osteopathy, which led to various trainings, though I could only apply them in limited ways in general practice.
For the past 10 years, I’ve balanced raising two kids with working in general practice, honing my skills in internal medicine, surgery, and dentistry. Four years ago, I began pursuing my goal of becoming an acupuncturist. I’ve since obtained Level II Reiki attunement and completed advanced training in Food Therapy, Acupuncture, and Herbal Medicine at Chi University. I’m now a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist, with plans to further my certifications in holistic therapies.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing board games with my kids, watching soccer, listening to podcasts, and bingewatching shows with my husband.

Chiropractic Can Help With Stress
By Alicia Kovach, DC Kovach Chiropractic
In today’s fast-paced society, we find ourselves constantly on the move, grappling with the hustle and bustle of life. The burdens of work, family, and financial concerns add to the chaos. Have you ever considered how this relentless stress affects your
well-being?
Stress, whether it manifests physically or mentally, sets off a primal fight-or-flight reaction within us. This response triggers a cascade of physiological changes that affect virtually every corner of our bodies. At the core of this response is the hypothalamus, a brain region that ignites the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Heart rate escalates, blood volume and pressure surge, and blood flow diverts away from digestion and extremities. Our senses sharpen, with vision becoming more acute and hearing more finely tuned. In response to these SNS signals, the adrenal glands release a cocktail of corticoids, including adrenaline, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Such a response is incredibly valu-

Imagine instead your teeth straightening over time, and most people not even aware that you’re undergoing orthodontics. With Invisalign, you live your best life during treatment, and after – it does not have to be one or the other.
How Invisalign Works
The first part of the process calls for a friendly chat and exam with your Invisalign dentist, who will examine your teeth, take x-rays, and talk to you about your smile. Your dentist will want to know what you hope to achieve, and this exam and chat helps determine whether Invisalign is the best option for you. If Invisalign is the right choice, impressions are taken of your smile, and the Invisalign lab uses these models to design your Invisalign clear aligners. Every couple of weeks, you change to a new aligner until you have exhausted the supply, and your new smile is ready for the world. You will be given an accurate estimate of how long you will need Invisalign therapy Following therapy, you are supplied with a custom retainer to remind your teeth that “straight is their new normal.”
The Benefits Of Invisalign
Aside from straight teeth and renewed confidence, Invisalign contributes to better oral health. Brushing and flossing are more productive. A straight bite helps eliminate wear on your teeth that can lead to cavities. During therapy, you can remove your aligners when brushing and flossing, or eating and drinking. This approach contributes to better oral care throughout treatment. With traditional metal braces, you have to work hard to clean around brackets and wires.

Exploring the Benefits Of TeethXpress Implants For Dental Health
Dr. Larry Bryant
TeethXpress implants have revolutionized dental care by offering a comprehensive solution for individuals struggling with missing or failing teeth. Let’s delve into the educational aspects of TeethXpress implants, focusing on their benefits and what to expect from this innovative procedure.
Understanding TeethXpress Implants
TeethXpress implants are a modern dental solution designed to replace missing or damaged teeth with a permanent set of prosthetic teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, TeethXpress implants are securely anchored to the jawbone, providing stability and functionality comparable to natural teeth.
Immediate Results and Lasting Impact
One of the primary advantages of TeethXpress implants is the immediate results they offer. Unlike traditional dental implant procedures that may require multiple visits over an extended period, TeethXpress can often provide a complete set of new teeth in just a few hours. This quick turnaround time allows patients to swiftly regain their ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently.
Improved Dietary Habits and Quality of Life
TeethXpress implants can significantly improve dietary habits and overall quality of life for individuals struggling with compromised dental health. By providing a stable and functional bite, these implants enable patients to enjoy a wide variety of foods without restrictions. Moreover, the aesthetic enhancement provided by TeethXpress implants can boost self-confidence and contribute to a more positive self-image.
Preservation of Jawbone and Long-Term Oral Health
Beyond immediate benefits, TeethXpress implants contribute to longterm oral health by replacing missing teeth and stimulating the jawbone. This helps prevent bone loss and preserves facial structure, reducing the risk of future dental complications. By maintaining optimal oral health, individuals can enjoy improved overall well-being and longevity.
Affordable Access to Dental Implants
Concerns about the cost of dental implants should not deter individuals from considering TeethXpress. While dental insurance may provide partial coverage, alternative payment options such as healthcare installment plans or financing options can make the procedure financially accessible for many individuals. By exploring these options, patients can pursue dental implants without compromising their financial stability.
BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS
Empowering Dental Health with TeethXpress

For those considering TeethXpress implants, consulting with a certified provider is essential. To learn more or schedule a consultation, individuals can contact a TeethXpress provider in their area.
Investing in dental health is investing in overall well-being. With TeethXpress implants, individuals can reclaim their smiles and enjoy the benefits of optimal oral health for years to come.

By Matthew Skancke, MD & Rami Makhoul, MD Metro Colon and Rectal Surgery
In the realm of medical science, the field of colon and rectal surgery has witnessed remarkable advancements in recent years. These developments have not only revolutionized the way medical professionals diagnose and treat colorectal conditions but have also significantly improved patient outcomes and quality of life. Advanced medical technology has played a pivotal role in these achievements, enhancing the precision and effectiveness of procedures, reducing recovery times, and minimizing post-operative discomfort.
One of the most prominent advancements in colon and rectal surgery is the adoption of minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy and robotic-assisted surgery. Laparoscopy involves making small incisions and inserting a camera and specialized surgical tools to perform the procedure. Robotic-assisted surgery takes this a step further by offering greater precision and dexterity through the use of robotic arms controlled by the surgeon. These techniques lead to smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. Patients experience less pain, shorter hospital stays, and can often return to their normal activities sooner.
Imaging technology has also transformed the preoperative phase of colorectal surgeries. High-resolution MRI and CT scans allow surgeons to obtain detailed images of the affected area, helping them plan the procedure with unparalleled accuracy. Three-dimensional modeling and virtual reality systems enable surgeons to practice complex procedures before they step into the operating room, reducing the risk of complications and improving outcomes.
Endoscopy has seen substantial advancements in recent years, with technologies like colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and flexible sigmoidoscopy providing more precise and less invasive ways to detect and diagnose colorectal conditions. These procedures, often performed on an outpatient basis, have become essential tools for early detection and prevention, leading to more effective treatments.
In the realm of therapeutics, new
Advancing Colorectal Surgery with CuttingEdge Medical Technology
technology has led to groundbreaking advancements in the treatment of colorectal cancers. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are being used to combat cancer cells with unprecedented precision, minimizing the harm to healthy tissues. Additionally, advanced surgical instruments and techniques are making it possible to perform complex, organ-preserving surgeries, preserving
patients’ quality of life.
Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) is being harnessed to improve decision-making in colorectal surgery. AI algorithms can analyze vast datasets to predict patient outcomes, assist in surgical planning, and identify potential complications early. These AI tools provide valuable insights to surgeons and help optimize treatment plans.
Advanced medical technology is revolutionizing the field of colon and
rectal surgery. Minimally invasive techniques, improved imaging, endoscopic procedures, and innovative therapeutic approaches are making these surgeries more effective and less intrusive for patients. The synergy between technology and medical expertise is leading to better outcomes, shorter recovery times, and ultimately, enhanced quality of life for individuals undergoing colorectal surgery. As technology continues to advance, the future holds even more promising possibilities for this critical field of medicine.

A Journey of Healing
Elambert Richardson’s journey to founding Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health is a remarkable story of resilience, healing, and dedication to helping others. Richardson’s path began with a profound personal struggle and evolved into creating a sanctuary of well-being that includes innovative treatments like a unique salt cave.
Richardson, once a preschool teacher, faced a debilitating injury that altered the course of her life. Despite extensive physical therapy, her pain persisted,
leading to depression and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Her doctor presented her with a stark choice: find a way to live or succumb to her condition. This critical moment propelled Richardson to seek healing beyond conventional methods.
Richardson shared another poignant aspect of her struggle: the hostile work environment that led to her depression and ultimately, PTSD. She recounts instances of mistreatment, including being ostracized by colleagues and subjected to demeaning messages.
Despite enduring chronic pain and emotional distress, Richardson finds solace in helping others and is embarking on a journey of healing by sharing her story.
A pivotal turning point came with her reading of “The Ministry of Healing,” a book that highlighted the therapeutic power of helping others. This revelation ignited her determination to overcome her depression and explore a career in healthcare. Richardson began volunteering at her children’s school, pursued higher education, and ultimate-

Richardson’s journey was further challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced her business to close for 15 months. During this time, she also contracted the virus, requiring oxygen therapy. Remarkably, this treatment provided significant relief from her chronic pain. “The oxygen was so good. I mean, that was the first thing that, really like, I had no pain,” she recounted.
A Vision Of Wellness
After her recovery, Richardson experienced a life-changing dream that inspired her to create a comprehensive health and wellness center in Calvert County. This vision became Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health, featuring an array of services designed to promote natural health and wellness, including an oxygen bar, hyperbaric chamber, and a signature salt cave.
The salt cave is a central feature of Richardson’s spa. Constructed with real salt bricks, the cave offers a serene environment where visitors can experience the benefits of inhaling medicalgrade salt. These benefits range from improved skin health and respiratory relief to overall relaxation. “It’s good for your skin. If you have eczema, it’s good for different skin conditions. Also your lungs. For me, I have asthma. And after having this, I haven’t had to really carry my inhaler,” Richardson explained.
Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health offers a variety of wellness services, including massage therapy, facials, waxing, oxygen therapy, red light therapy, infrared sauna, and ionic foot baths. This holistic approach addresses both physical and mental well-being, providing a comprehensive healing experience.
Elambert Richardson also hosts a weekly Wellness Wednesday event at the spa. For just $25, attendees can experience the salt cave and participate in free small group health and wellness events. These events, largely led by Jeanette Umstead, a health coach at the spa, focus on Bible-based teachings of the 8 laws of health. These teachings emphasize principles such as a plantbased diet and the importance of rest, believed to contribute to long lifespan and overall well-being when followed.

Top Six Ways To Boost Your Lymphatic System
This Holiday Season
By Kaitlyn Berry Magothy Therapy & Welness
With the holidays fast approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in stress, overindulgence, and inactivity, which can take a toll on your body and more importantly your lymphatic system. Your lymph system is crucial for fighting disease & infection, remove waste products & toxins, and maintain body

In therapy with me, expect a blend of warmth, authenticity, and laughter as foundational elements. Establishing a secure, trusting relationship is my priority, seeing healing emerge through connection. Embracing Dolly Parton’s insight that “laughter through tears is my favorite emotion,” I avoid taking myself too seriously, recognizing that defensiveness hinders growth – a lesson learned through experience and parenting.
Raised by a resilient single mother, I inherited values of strength, perseverance, and compassion. These principles not only shape my therapeutic practice but also form the core of our Betty Center’s ethos. My unique journey from journalism to social work after raising my children led me to obtain my Masters in Social Work at 47. My personality encompasses contrasts—I relish yoga, loud concerts, and the outdoors as much as quiet moments with family, books, and cozy cups of tea. I’m a devoted reader, a passionate Washington football fan, and an adept cook (but not a baker!). Additionally, I indulge in true crime podcasts and Dateline/48 Hours, though that’s our little secret.
In therapy, I specialize in aiding individuals navigating transitions: divorce, empty-nesting, and other major life changes. I believe in a personalized approach, fostering a secure therapeutic relationship where you feel truly heard and understood.

Dr. Washington’s interest in medicine started early as both her parents were in the medical field. Her inspiration is derived from the sacrifice of her parents as well as countless other health care workers that dedicate their careers in service to others. Her specific interests in Cardiology include coronary artery disease and prevention, women’s cardiovascular health, and health disparities. Coronary heart disease or disease of the arteries that supply the heart is highly prevalent in the US with an estimated 20.5 million Americans with the diagnosis 2. Among women, it is often difficult to recognize the signs and symptoms of a heart attack and can often get overlooked1
Dr. Washington looks forward to working with and delivering care to the patients within the southern Maryland area. She truly believes knowledge is power and arming patients with the knowledge and tools necessary to guide them through their journey to better cardiovascular health.

There are many ways of healing. Healing is an awareness that you sense from your inner self (subconscious mind), that tells you that you need to explore what’s happening within yourself internally and consciously. Mind, body, and spirit (the soul) all need healing. The mind tells you what you are experiencing in the given moment. The body reacts as the mind releases the thought. The thought can be positive or negative, and the thought sends the message to the body organs, and then the organs respond to the thought.
Consulting hypnosis – helping everyday normal people with everyday normal problems – can help you with problems or situations by helping the way you interpret the thought and then respond to the thought. The thoughts that bring fear often affect the kidneys, and the thoughts that trigger anger often affect the liver and heart.
There are many ways of healing
The organs reside in the body and mind by way of the body systems. The systems are managed, controlled, balanced, repaired, or healed according to the thoughts you are having about that system and the methods you choose to heal or repair that system.
Often you will hear people say that the doctor can’t seem to find their problem. Whether the doctors find or don’t find the cause of your pain (mental, physical emotional, or spiritual) it is uncomfortable. You simply want relief. You want the doctors to tell you something so that the thought can trigger an emotion in certain organs to heal or not.
Consulting Hypnosis
Consulting hypnosis can help you sort out everyday problems such as the thoughts that surround COVID-19, or your children, spouse, boss, or whomever – the consulting hypnotist can help you sort things out.
Hypnosis helps you to become aware of your state of mind such as your thoughts, feelings, and emotions that can get trapped in the body, in
your organs. A consulting hypnotist helps you to identify the state (fear, anger, sadness, depression, or love) and release it, without the use of drugs or surgery.
Going to see a consulting hypnotist is like going to talk with a friend, a person who has everyday problems too, and who has the tools to teach you how to not just cope but live.
Often our creative imagination in our thoughts helps us to create make-believe situations. But what’s not imagined is the effect it has on your organs and your systems. What is imagined is you feeling whole and complete to go about living your life in the reality that you have healed. What is real and not imagined is going to see a consulting hypnotist, and that it does help.
Aging in Place:
A Guide To Future Planning
Submitted By Right At Home
Are you considering aging in place—staying in your own home rather than moving to a senior residence? While this choice can be ideal, it requires thoughtful planning and a commitment to healthy living.
1. Home Adaptations For Safety
Begin by assessing what changes your home may need. Consider installing grab bars in the bathroom, improving lighting, and eliminating steps for safety. Technology like medical alert systems and smart home devices can enhance convenience.
Plan for the future: Invest in renovations that accommodate potential mobility issues, such as wider doorways and accessible showers. A professional assessment from a home safety specialist can help identify hazards.
2. Financial Planning
Financial readiness is essential for a smooth transition into retirement. Consult a financial advisor to review your savings and potential home expenses. Long-term care insurance can help cover home care costs if needed. Explore government programs: Medicare and Medicaid may assist with aging-related expenses, and veterans should check benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
3. Legal and Health Care Prep
Ensure your legal documents are up to date, including your will and health care directives. Regular medical checkups can help manage chronic conditions, while vaccinations, like the flu shot, are important for overall health.
4. Building a Support Network
Community connections are invaluable for those aging in place. Maintain relationships with family and friends and consider services like meal delivery and transportation assistance.
Research local resources: Community centers often offer social activities and support groups. Senior ride-sharing services or discounted transit options may also be available.
5. Preparing For the Unexpected
Despite the best plans, circumstances can change. Having a contingency plan is crucial. Research local home care agencies and rehabilitation centers in case you need temporary care after a hospital visit.
If aging in place becomes unfeasible, familiarize yourself with local assisted living options. Aging in place successfully requires preparation and flexibility. By adapting your home, securing your finances, and planning for health changes, you can enjoy your later years in comfort.
AI-Assisted Colonoscopies
Submitted By Gastro Center of Maryland
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common and deadly forms of cancer, but it’s also one of the most preventable and treatable if detected early. Colon cancer screening plays a critical role in identifying pre-cancerous polyps before they turn into cancer, allowing for early intervention. Among the recent advancements in this field is the use of AI-assisted colonoscopies, a technology that is revolutionizing the way screenings are performed and interpreted.
The Importance Of Early Detection
The earlier colorectal cancer is detected, the better the outcomes. When found at an early stage, treatment is often less invasive, and the survival rates are significantly higher. Unfortunately, colorectal cancer often presents
no symptoms in its early stages, which makes regular screening vital, especially for individuals over the age of 45 or those with risk factors such as a family history of the disease. Without early screening, polyps can go unnoticed and develop into cancerous tumors over time, making treatment more difficult and the prognosis worse.
How AI Improves Colonoscopies
AI-assisted colonoscopies are designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of traditional colonoscopy procedures. During a colonoscopy, a physician uses a camera to scan the colon for polyps or abnormal growths that could potentially develop into cancer. AI algorithms, integrated into the imaging systems, analyze the live footage in real-time, acting as an extra set of eyes for the doctor. These algorithms can detect polyps as small as a few millimePlease see “Colonoscopies,” page 65
Choosing An Orthodontist
By Jacqueline Brown Bryant DDS, MS, PC
Orthodontists are dentists who receive an extra 2-3 years of specialized education and training beyond dental school to learn the proper way to diagnose, and treat by straightening malalignment of teeth, muscles and jaws to improve function and esthetics.
To aid the process of choosing an orthodontic specialist, here are some very important questions to ask to assure you are seeing the best smile designer expert.
Are you an orthodontist? What
type of orthodontic training did you receive beyond dental school? How much training? What type (weekend or manufacturer’s courses, or 2-3 years of orthodontic education beyond dental school)? Are you a member of the American Association of Orthodontists?
What services do you offer? Do you treat all orthodontic cases or just minor cases? What about complex cases involving compromised teeth and bone? Do you treat adults, children or both? Do you treat periodontal cases? Implant cases? Jaw surgery cases? TMD cases?
Are you utilizing state-of-theart, self-ligating bracket systems, clear, metal, nickle-free and lingual braces, clear aligners and functional appliances for early treatment, space management and growth guidance?
Has your clinical staff had any orthodontic training? Is your administrative staff familiar with insurances and flexible spending/health savings accounts?

Energy Quantum Healing
Energy quantum healing operates on the principle that the body’s innate energy field extends beyond its physical boundaries, connecting with the Earth’s magnetic field and traversing various dimensions within the spiritual realm.
This method focuses on identifying and rectifying congested negative energy, facilitating the restoration of a harmonious flow of positive energy throughout the entire human energy system. By addressing imbalances and disturbances within this system, energy quantum healing aims to integrate the body, mind, and soul in order to foster holistic health and facilitating the healing process. Practitioners believe that resolving energy field disturbances can prevent potential physical manifestations of illness in the future.
Holistic Therapies
Meditation, sound immersion, aura, chakra balancing and healing exert a tangible impact on the body, constituting a form of vibrational medicine that may influence heart
rate, blood pressure, and brain wave patterns. Sound waves, in particular, emit vibrations that are thought to penetrate and interact with the physical body and its major systems, accessing the aura and chakra systems to alleviate spiritual blockages and alleviate tension and stress. Sessions incorporating meditation, sound immersion, and healing techniques have been shown to alleviate physical discomfort in certain individuals, as well as mitigate anxiety and depression, and address emotional imbalances and past traumas.
Keep in mind that these therapies are complementary and should be used in conjunction with conventional medical care.

balances, drugs/alcohol or stress can precipitate attacks, which frequently can be mistaken as heart attacks or breathing problems.
Symptoms often appear suddenly without apparent cause. Racing/ pounding heartbeat, chest pain, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, tingling/numbness in hands, a sense of terror or losing control have been described as symptoms experienced during panic attacks. Typically, attacks last several minutes but can be longer. When someone has repeated episodes or feels great anxiety over the possibility of re-occurring attacks, it is diagnosed as panic disorder.
Approximately three million people have a panic disorder at some time during their lives. Women seem to be affected twice as often as men.
Once a panic attack occurs, irrational fears may develop about the situation and the person may avoid

Chinese Acupuncture For Your Neck Pain
Chinese acupuncture has a rich history spanning over 3,000 years, forming an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Acupuncture entails the delicate insertion of fine needles into specific points on the skin, aiming to induce therapeutic benefits.
The Mechanism Behind Acupuncture
Within the framework of Chinese medicine, acupuncture is rooted in the belief that it acts by clearing the blockages in the flow of energy along pathways known as “meridians.” The underlying theory suggests that when
these energy channels are obstructed, discomfort ensues.
Understanding Neck Pain Origins
The primary causes of neck pain often stem from extended periods of maintaining a fixed posture, leading to increased neck tension. Injuries can also trigger neck pain. Among adults, cervical spinal stenosis, which involves the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck, is a prevalent factor. In the context of Chinese medicine, it is believed that external factors like wind, cold, injuries, or excessive physical activities can disrupt the flow of qi and blood in the neck, ultimately resulting in neck pain.
Notable Symptoms Of Neck Pain
Common symptoms associated with neck pain include the presence of knots, stiffness, or sharp pain in the neck region. This discomfort may radiate to the shoulders, upper back, or arms. In some cases, individuals might also experience headaches, difficulty in head and neck movement, as well as sensations of numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms.

Why You Should See a Board-Certified Pain Physician
By Dr. Anver Khan Chesapeake Spine & Pain
Chronic pain affects millions and can greatly reduce quality of life, particularly when dealing with complex conditions like radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, lumbar or cervical arthritis, and post-laminectomy syndrome. If you’re struggling with ongoing pain, seeking a board-certified pain physician can make a significant difference in your care. Board certification indicates that a physician has completed rigorous training and passed specialized exams in pain management. This extensive
education ensures they’re equipped to understand the nuances of pain syndromes, correctly diagnose the source of your pain, and provide the most effective interventional treatments available.
One common pain condition treated by board-certified pain physicians is radiculopathy, which is often caused by a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root. This compression can lead to radiating pain, weakness, or numbness along the nerve pathway. Interventions like epidural steroid injections can provide relief by reducing inflammation around the nerve root, relieving pain and improving mobility.
For patients with spinal stenosis, a condition where the spinal canal narrows and compresses the nerves, targeted injections can help. Epidural steroid injections are often used to reduce inflammation and create more space around the nerves. Additionally, a minimally invasive procedure called spinal cord stimulation may be recommended, especially in

The Holiday Season and Colds
Submitted by Kensington Pharmacy
Coming down with a cold during the holidays can turn your holiday season into drudgery.
You catch a cold when a virus invades your nose or eyes. You might breathe in airborne droplets, but far more often, you catch a cold by touching a germy surface or having direct contact with a person who has a cold and then touching your nose or eyes.
Your risk of catching a cold is greater when you are indoors most of the time, when the air is dry, and when you have close contact with other people. During the holiday season, people travel in trains, planes, and automobiles and are probably sharing the ride with some of the 200 viruses that cause the common cold.
To Lessen Your Risk
Avoid prolonged close contact with people who have colds. Handshaking, hugging, and sharing meals and good times are so much a part of
the holiday season, exposure to cold viruses is probably inevitable. Keep your hands away from your nose and eyes because cold viruses can live up to three hours on your skin.
Wash your hands, with soap and water, often. Scrub the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails – not just your palms – for a full 15 seconds and rinse well. Dry your hands with a disposable towel, and turn off the faucet using the towel. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Clean your personal items. Cold viruses can live on surfaces (especially nonporous surfaces such as plastic, metal, or glass) for up to 48 hours. Use disinfectant wipes to clean the surfaces you regularly touch this holiday season – your laptop keyboard, your cell phone, your car’s steering wheel.

Hospice and Supportive Care An Additional Layer Of Support For Residents Of Assisted Living Centers
By Colleen Shields Market Development Manager Hospice of the Chesapeake
When a member of your family lives in an assisted living center, you feel safe knowing they have help with their dayto-day life. Someone’s there to help them bathe and get dressed, cook their meals and encourage them to be active.
There’s another layer of support many do not know about. More than likely, someone from their local hospice organization is there, too. For residents living with chronic or life-limiting illness, assisted living centers turn to local hospice and supportive care professionals to provide onsite expert care.
Supportive care practitioners, also known as palliative specialists, visit residents to provide specialized care focused on reducing the symptoms, pain and stress caused by any serious illness. It can be provided alongside curative treatment at any stage. This isn’t only for cancer patients. Supportive care is a perfect partner for people coping with any advanced illness – from congestive heart failure and Parkinson’s to dementia and lung disease.
Hospice care is for residents whose disease progresses to a point where doctors determine a cure is no longer an option, and they likely have less than six months to live. The care shifts to ensuring the patient is as comfortable as possible with a focus on quality of life. A whole team of end-of-life specialists care for the patient in their residence. This is often called the continuum of care. We’re here for the family and the center’s care team as much as we’re here for the patient. That’s why we offer another layer of support to assisted living centers – education. This can be community gatherings at the center to educate their residents and staff on hospice and supportive care. It can also be in-service education on how to care for their residents at end of life.
Another layer of support comes from trained volunteers who often visit assisted living facilities to provide pet therapy, Compassionate Touch, reiki and honor salutes. Sometimes volunteers are there just to visit and be a friend.
All of this comes to the resident onsite – there’s no need to arrange transportation or schedule offsite appointments. The healthcare industry can be overwhelming. Hospice organizations like the not-for-profit I work for go where they are needed to empower residents, their family and the center staff. Our wish is for everyone to understand the choices they have when experiencing advanced illness of any kind. Enhanced Underinsured Coverage
By James A. Cleaver, Esq. Alexander & Cleaver
You’ve just been in a serious motor vehicle crash. Through no fault of your own your car is a total loss and you’ve been seriously injured. Your future is filled with extensive medical treatment and your doctor has taken you out of work. To top it off you’ve just discovered the other driver has “cut rate” insurance. What do you do?
“Underinsured” motorist cover-
age is a claim under your own automobile insurance policy for benefits over and above the limits of the other driver’s coverage. There’s one catch: it’s only available if your policy limits exceed the liability limits of the at fault driver. Otherwise, stated, your insurance company gets a credit for the amount of coverage the other driver’s insurance policy. For years, Maryland prohibited “stacking”, adding the limits of you underinsured coverage to the other driver’s liability coverage.
Effective July 1, 2018, you can purchase what is called “enhanced underinsured motorist coverage”. The effect is to raise your underinsured benefits up to the amount of your liability policy. Otherwise stated, your insurance cannot subtract the amount of the other driver’s liability limits from your underinsured coverage.
Why is this important? In my

Future Fertility A Case For Funding
By Yemi Adesanya-Famuyiwa, MD Montgomery Fertility Center
Cancer Diagnosis and Future Fertility
A cancer diagnosis is arguably one of the most devastating things that can happen in a person’s life. It causes an incredible amount of stress both emotionally, physically, and financially.
What’s even more devastating is to have this diagnosis made in one’s 20s right after their marriage. The diagnosis of cancer and its subsequent treatment can impact future fertility. This leads to
another devastating problem to process at that time – impending future infertility. Infertility has been likened to loss of a loved one. In this case, the loss is of a loved one that has yet to be born. The loss felt is no different than if a live born child had passed away.
The combined pain of a new onset cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment with the potential for future infertility is doubly devastating.
The unfortunate conundrum is that many young cancer patients are now left to financially bear the cost of medical care as well as the cost of fertility preservation. While there are resources sometimes for medical treatment, most resources do not factor in the fact that patients will need multiple doctors’ visits, will need copayments and deductibles met, will need to purchase medications, and pay for transportation to and from care centers. All these factors combined also impacts their ability to work during the time of such treatment. This doubly impacts their financial status because they cannot also work and earn money

Understanding Menopause A Key Phase In Women’s Health
By Ashley Pimperl MSN, CRNP, FNP-C
Oasis Advanced GYN Surgery
Menopause marks a significant transition in a woman’s life, representing the end of her reproductive years. This natural biological process typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average onset around 51. It is defined as the point when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months.
Symptoms and Stages
Menopause is often preceded by perimenopause, a phase that can start several years before the last menstrual period. During perimenopause, women may experience irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and sleep disturbances. These symptoms result from fluctuating hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone. Once a woman reaches menopause, she enters postmenopause. In this phase, many of the symptoms experienced during perimenopause gradually diminish. Cerec: Dental Crowns In One Hour
Submitted by E. Taylor Meiser, DDS
Lighthouse Family Dentistry
Crowns have been made to re-
store decayed and broken down teeth for over 100 years. Most of the time crowns require at least two dental appointments to produce; however, tech-
nology has taken the crown process to the next level. It’s called the CEREC.
The Cerec machine does this entire process in about an hour, saving you that second dental visit and hours of your time.
How It Works
First, the crown is made of 100% porcelain. It is sintered, which means it is put under pressure and heat to make its qualities like that of enamel in hardness and wear. Second, there are no impressions to take and send to the lab. The Cerec crown is made with a CAD/CAM machine. CAD stands for Computer Assisted Design and CAM is for Computer Assisted Manufacture.
With the Cerec blue CAM, a photo is taken of the tooth and brought into the computer.
In the computer the dentist now designs the crown. Next, a block of
E. Taylor Meiser,
porcelain is placed in a milling machine. The dentist then sends the crown design to the milling machine. The Cerec milling machine then takes that block of porcelain and mills out the crown. The milling process takes about 10-15 minutes.
Third, the porcelain crown is removed from the mill. The dentist cements the porcelain crown using a new generation of cements that bonds the tooth to the porcelain. This gives the new restoration additional strength.
Cerec crowns are very natural looking, have a very precise fit, are durable and can be made in one dental visit in about one hour.

Ingrown nails (onychocryptosis) are the most common nail impairment. An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or edges of the nail grows down and into the skin of the toe. Usually, toenails grow straight out. Sometimes, however, nail corners or sides dig painfully into the soft tissue of nail grooves, often leading to irritation, redness, and swelling. The big toe is the most common location for this condition, but other toes can also become affected. Some people are more prone to ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails may be caused by the following:
• Improperly trimmed nails
• Heredity
• Shoe pressure; crowding of toes
• Repeated trauma to the feet from normal activities
The following symptoms may be present with ingrown toenails
• Pain
• Redness and swelling
• Drainage
• Odor
• Prominent skin tissue (proud flesh) If you suspect an infection due to an ingrown toenail, immerse the foot in a warm saltwater soak, or a basin of soapy water, then apply an antiseptic and bandage the area.
People with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or other circulatory disorders must avoid any form of self-treatment and seek podiatric medical care as soon as possible.
Other “do-it-yourself” treatments, including any attempt to remove any part of an infected nail or the use of over-the-counter medications, should be avoided. Nail problems should be evaluated and treated by your podiatrist, who can diagnose the ailment, and then prescribe medication or another appropriate treatment.
When To Visit a Podiatrist
You should see a podiatrist immediately if any drainage or excessive redness is present around the toenail. Also, if a short trial of home treatment has not resulted in improvement of the condition, see your podiatrist. If you have diabetes or

when weight is brought to bear directly on the wart, although pressure on the side of a wart can create equally intense pain.
Tips For Prevention
• Avoid walking barefoot.
• Change shoes and socks daily.
• Keep feet clean and dry.
• Avoid direct contact with warts.
• Do not ignore growths on, or changes in, your skin.
• Visit your podiatric physician as part of your annual health checkup.
Self Treatment
Self-treatment is generally not advisable. Over-the-counter preparations contain acids or chemicals that destroy skin cells, and it takes an expert to destroy abnormal skin cells (warts) without also destroying
surrounding healthy tissue. Those with diabetes or with cardiovascular or circulatory disorder should avoid self-treatment.
Professional Treatment
It is possible that your podiatric physician will prescribe and supervise your use of a wart-removal preparation. More likely, however, removal of warts by a simple surgical procedure, performed under local anesthetic, may be indicated.
Lasers have become a common, effective treatment. A procedure known as CO2 laser cautery is performed under local anesthesia in your podiatrist’s office surgical setting or an outpatient surgery facility. The laser reduces post-treatment scarring and is a safe form for eliminating wart lesions.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?
First, either local or general anesthesia will be administered.
Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.
Next, they will insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely,

Individuals enduring chronic stress are more susceptible to conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and damage to muscle tissue due to ongoing tension and contraction. Their immune response can suffer, nerve irritation may occur, and the healing process from illnesses and injuries can slow down significantly. You might be wondering how chiropractic care fits into this picture.
Chiropractic adjustments are effective at releasing muscle tension, thereby promoting a return to a more harmonious and relaxed state of being. These adjustments also alleviate spinal nerve irritation and enhance
The bones and joints are affected in the vast number of people with obesity. Many people have arthritis with complaints of pain in the knees or hips. Some folks will get severe back pain that limits their daily activities. Others are disabled by the severity of the arthritis.

blood circulation.
In many instances, these changes can be sufficient to coax the brain into turning off the fight-or-flight response, initiating the healing process. A wellaligned and balanced spine plays a pivotal role in effectively managing stress. Moreover, a chiropractor may suggest relaxation techniques and discuss posture and environmental adjustments to aid in the recovery from chronic stress.
It’s crucial to note that chiropractic care cannot magically transform your job into a stress-free haven or make the world a quieter place. However, what it can do is equip you with healthier coping mechanisms for stress, ultimately reducing the risk of physical damage.
If you know someone grappling with stress, it’s worth asking whether they’ve recently sought the support of their chiropractor.
tively affect quality of life. Many people with obesity require multiple medications, require frequent medical care or hospitalizations, they face higher health care costs and tend to have decreased productivity because of their health.
Effective weight management requires a committed, sustainable approach to lifestyle and behaviors that promote weight loss over time. Diets, exercise routines, medications, and surgery are all tools that can be used as a part of a long-term plan for weight management. Effective weight management will help avoid and even reverse many of the health effects of obesity.

hoLi Day season
The saying goes that there’s no cure for the common cold, but even so, you can feel more comfortable – even when you’re far away from home. Your goal is to relieve your symptoms.
Try Natural Ways To Feel Better:
Drink lots of water. Doctors recommend eight glasses a day to keep your nose and throat moist and to loosen congestion. Avoid alcohol and caffeine drinks because they dry out –or dehydrate – your system. A salt-water gargle may soothe your sore throat. Get plenty of rest. If possible, adjust the temperature and humidity of your sleeping area to be moist and warm, but not overheated.
Eat right. No scientific evidence backs the old adage, “Starve a cold; feed a fever.”
Don’t smoke. Smoking can dehydrate your body and make your symptoms worse.
Use over-the-counter medications to treat your symptoms.

Avoid Destructive Habits
Develop healthy routines that can help you lead a healthy life. Avoid unhealthy habits such as alcohol abuse, smoking and drug abuse. Poor eating and exercise habits may lead to heart disease, cancer, and unhealthy weight gain or vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
Exercise Together
Regular exercise can help prevent some diseases, increase your energy level, aid in managing stress and help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. Balanced exercise is important – do aerobic exercise to benefit your cardiovascular system, strength training to improve muscle tone and

macy before you leave home. Some common products that may help include the following:
Saline nasal sprays can fight stuffiness and congestion.
Decongestants and pain relievers may relieve your symptoms, even though they will not shorten the duration of your cold. People sometimes complain of feeling feverish with a cold, but colds and fever don’t usually go together. However, you may run a temperature of 100ºF – enough to slow you down a bit.
Ask the local pharmacist about complementary or alternative treatments such as:
Homeopathic remedies (used within the first 24-48 hours of symptoms) such as zinc lozenges and intranasal zinc gluconate. Recent clinical studies have demonstrated that treatment with intranasal zinc nasal gel is effective in reducing the duration and severity of common cold symptoms within 24-48 hours of symptom onset.

neck pain
Harnessing Acupuncture For Neck Pain Management
Acupuncture serves as a widely recognized approach for addressing neck pain and various musculoskeletal issues, with some compelling evidence to support its efficacy in both short-term and long-term pain relief. An Australian randomized controlled trial sought to compare the effectiveness of acupuncture with simulated acupuncture in individuals dealing with sub-acute and chronic whiplashrelated disorders. The study involved a series of 12 acupuncture sessions over a six-week period, with follow-up assessments at three and six months. The results revealed that those who received genuine electro-acupuncture treatment experienced significantly greater reductions in pain intensity at three and six months, as compared to the sham electro-acupuncture group (Spine, April 2011).
Incorporating Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese medicine encompasses a diverse array of practices, including Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture/moxibustion, among others. The use of Chinese medicine therapies, such as herbal remedies and acupuncture, for managing neck pain, has not only been widespread but also highly effective, extending its reach not just within China but also across Europe.
Navigating Acupuncture Safety
While acupuncture is generally acknowledged as a safe therapeutic method, potential side effects may include dizziness, localized internal bleeding, dermatitis, nerve damage, or occasionally heightened pain—especially when administered by less experienced practitioners. Therefore, the role of a well-trained and seasoned acupuncturist is paramount in ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
panic Disor Ders
similar circumstances i.e., panic while driving over a bridge may lead to a person refusing to drive over any bridge.
According to the National Institutes of Health it is reasonable to believe that there is some biological basis for panic disorder. Theories propose that there may be a malfunction or hypersensitivity in the autonomic nervous system. Initial attacks can be triggered by a physical illness, major life stress or medication side effect. Caffeine or alcohol can also trigger panic symptoms in some people.
Treatment should rule out other somatic illnesses. A combination of medication and a type of therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy often are

Fertility Preservation
Added to this problem is the need for fertility preservation. The unfortunate fact is that most insurance plans do not cover fertility preservation treatment. Depending on the resources of the patient and their socio economic status, if they are even on Medicaid, they will find that Medicaid has no fundings whatsoever for fertility treatment or preservation. Most additional charitable organizations set up to support fertility do not include fertility preservation for cancer patients.
Herein lies the problem. Where are such patients to turn to for help? Fertility clinics can subsidize some of this treat-
successful in treating panic disorder. In treatment, the person is taught ways to decrease anxiety, techniques to refocus attention, or breathing exercises. Exposure to the fearful situation may slowly desensitize the person and relieve symptoms. The use of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications have been shown to help prevent panic attacks or reduce their frequency. With effective treatment there is a good recovery rate, 75-90%, in a relatively short time frame. Having the support of family and friends during treatment can enhance the effectiveness of treatment and decrease anxiety related to the possibility of the panic attacks recurring.

ment, unfortunately there are limiting factors such as payments for independent anesthesia services, payments for medications (which price continues to rise by the day), and payment for FDA required donor screening if those patients choose to freeze their eggs or sperm not knowing if they will need a surrogate in the future. It is almost like a double penalty imposed by the current regulations to have the additional cost of the FDA screening that is uncompensated and unfunded.
I ask therefore where should such patients turn to if traditional charitable fertility organizations will not even cover them?

menopause are also at a higher risk for cardiovascular diseases due to changes in cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Moreover, menopause can affect mental health. The hormonal changes can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Sleep disturbances, common during this period, can further exacerbate these issues.
Management and Treatment
Managing menopausal symptoms often involves lifestyle changes and medical treatments. A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, regular physical activity, and maintaining a healthy weight can help mitigate some of the risks associated with menopause. For hot flashes and night sweats, dressing in layers, keeping the bedroom cool, and practicing relaxation techniques can provide relief.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a medical treatment option
that involves supplementing estrogen and progesterone to alleviate symptoms. However, HRT is not suitable for everyone and can have side effects. It’s essential to discuss the risks and benefits with a healthcare provider.
Non-hormonal treatments, such as antidepressants or medications to prevent bone loss, may also be considered. Additionally, herbal supplements and alternative therapies, like acupuncture, have been used by some women to manage symptoms, though their effectiveness varies.
Menopause is a natural part of aging, bringing both challenges and opportunities for women to focus on their health. Understanding the stages, symptoms, and management options can help women navigate this transition with greater ease and confidence. Regular check-ups and open communication with healthcare providers are crucial in managing menopausal health effectively.

never had to deal with before. The rise in certain cancers and other conditions certainly is a function of poisons and toxins in the environment. Overtime, people become toxic, sometimes in a subtle way, sometimes not so subtle.
Some of the signs and symptoms of being burdened by toxins include fatigue, fogginess, moodiness, lethargy, headaches, difficulty losing weight, achiness, persistent allergic symptoms, and skin rashes. People often experience being newly sensitive to substances like caffeine and alcohol as well as medications and supplements.

The typical 2-4 week detoxification process begins with looking at each person’s current state of health. We must look at the diet and whatever else our bodies are routinely exposed to that may be harmful. Starvation is not necessary for detoxification. It does not have to be uncomfortable (though you may experience your body going through some changes).
Doing this process once or twice a year under medical supervision can make an enormous difference in a person’s sense of well-being and longevity. People report an increase in energy well being and lose nagging aches and pains, headaches, and extra pounds.

The Role Of Medical Marijuana In Stress Relief
Medical marijuana has gained attention for its potential to alleviate stress and anxiety. In states like Maryland, where medical marijuana is legal, patients can obtain a medical marijuana card to access cannabis products designed for therapeutic use. The primary compounds in cannabis, cannabidiol (CBD) and delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), are believed to interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to produce calming effects.
CBD, in particular, has shown promise in reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Research suggests that CBD can increase levels of anandamide, a naturally occurring cannabinoid linked to feelings of well-being, while also influencing serotonin receptors to regulate mood. By doing so, medical marijuana may help individuals manage stress more effectively, providing a sense of calm
without the psychoactive effects associated with THC.
Benefits Beyond Stress Relief
In addition to its stress-relieving properties, medical marijuana may also improve sleep quality. For those who struggle with insomnia or other sleep disorders, the calming effects of cannabis can promote better rest, which is essential for managing stress. Better sleep can lead to improved mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Seeking Guidance For Medical Marijuana Use
If you are considering medical marijuana for stress management, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional. In Southern Maryland, dispensaries offer personalized guidance to help patients find the right strain and product for their needs. Visiting them is the first step toward exploring this natural remedy for stress, especially during the busy holiday season.

advanced cases. This technique involves implanting a small device that sends mild electrical impulses to disrupt pain signals to the brain, providing substantial relief without invasive surgery.
Patients with arthritis, whether in the lumbar or cervical spine, can also benefit greatly from interventional pain management. Arthritis in the spine causes inflammation in the facet joints, leading to chronic pain and stiffness. For these cases, facet joint injections can reduce pain by delivering anti-inflammatory medication directly to the inflamed joint. In cases where pain persists, RFA can be used to disable the nerves around the joint, offering relief that can last several months or even years.

Post-laminectomy syndrome, or failed back surgery syndrome, is another challenging condition that pain physicians treat. It occurs when pain persists after spinal surgery, often due to scar tissue or altered nerve pathways. Spinal cord stimulation or targeted injections around the affected area can provide meaningful relief for patients experiencing this type of pain. By choosing a board-certified pain physician, patients gain access to specialized care that combines precise diagnostics with advanced, minimally invasive therapies. These physicians provide personalized treatment plans that help patients manage pain effectively, improve functionality, and regain control over their lives, making them invaluable resources for anyone struggling with chronic pain.
