Sports Eye Safety

From major league stadiums to small-town courts, America’s favorite pastimes make great memories for many. But for more than 42,000 athletes, those memories are ruined by eye injuries, the vast majority of which were preventable.

Injuries range from abrasions of the cornea and bruises of the eyelids to internal eye injuries, such as retinal detachments and internal bleeding. Many of these injuries lead to vision loss and permanent blindness.

The thousands of eye injuries each year aren’t only from basketball, baseball, football and hockey. Soccer, tennis, golf and water sports are also dangerous to the eyes. Each activity has its own specific protective eyewear, so when selecting eyewear make sure it is appropriate for your sport.

Today’s athletes can choose from various types of sturdy, lightweight and effective eyewear. When properly fitted, eyewear does not hinder performance and can prevent 90% of sports eye injuries.

So when participating in sports, be sure to:

• Select protective eyewear that is appropriate for the sport

• Be sure eyewear has polycarbonate lenses or shields

• Have eyewear properly fitted by an eye care professional Eye Safety For Children

Accidents resulting in eye injuries can happen to anyone. More than half of all eye injuries occur in people under the age of 25. Of the 100,000 eye injuries that occur annually, 40% occur during sports or recreational activities.

In the 5-14 age group, baseball is the number one cause of sports-related injuries. In the 15-24 age group, basketball is the most common cause of eye injuries, with injuries caused by contact with fingers and elbows. Perhaps the most startling statistic is that 90% of all eye injuries could be prevented.

It is important for parents to familiarize themselves with potentially dangerous situations at home and in school and to insist that their children use protective eyewear when participating in sports or other hazardous activities.

Eye Safety At Home and In the Yard

To provide the safest environment for your children, select games and toys that are appropriate for their age and responsibility level.

Provide adequate supervision and instruction when your children handle potentially dangerous items, such as pencils, scissors, forks and penknives. Be aware that even common household items such as paper clips, bungee cords, wire coat hangers, rubber bands and

fishhooks can cause serious eye injury. Avoid projectile toys such as darts, bows and arrows, and missile firing toys. Do not allow your children to play with non-powder rifles, pellet guns or BB guns. They are extremely dangerous and have been reclassified as firearms and removed from toy departments.

Keep all chemicals and sprays such as sink cleaners or oven cleaners, out of reach of small children. Do not allow children to ignite fireworks or stand near others who are doing so. All fireworks are potentially dangerous for children of all ages.

Do not allow children in the yard while a lawn mower is in use. Stones and debris thrown from moving blades can cause severe eye injuries.

Demonstrate the use of appropriate protective eyewear to children by always wearing protective eyewear yourself while using power tools, rotary mowers, line lawn trimmers, or while hammering. Children will learn by your example.

Whatever your game, whatever your age, you need to protect your eyes. See your eye care professional today for appropriate protective eyewear.

When an Injury Does Occur

It is always best to have an ophthalmologist examine the eyes as soon as possible when an injury does occur. The seriousness of an eye injury may not be immediately obvious.

Jacqueline D. Griffiths M.D. earned her undergraduate degree at Yale and her medical degree from the University of Michigan. Her Ophthalmology residency was completed at Georgetown University Medical Center.

Dr. Griffiths has been in private practice since 1994. She started her own practice and laser center, NewView Laser EyeTM in 1999 where she serves as the Medical Director. NewView’s Mission is to provide Excellence in Ophthalmologic services by giving personalized attention to every patient.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

The Role Of the Dentist, Orthodontist, and Oral Surgeon In Dental Implants

2

Dental implant procedures are complex and require the expertise of multiple dental professionals, each contributing their unique skills to achieve a successful and long-lasting result.

The general dentist typically serves as the primary point of contact. They initiate the diagnostic process, evaluate overall oral health, and determine whether the patient is a candidate for implants. The general dentist also handles initial care such as extractions, treatment of decay, or periodontal therapy. Once the need for collaboration is identified, the dentist coordinates referrals to the appropriate specialists.

An orthodontist may be involved early in the planning process, particularly if teeth have shifted into the space of a missing tooth or if bite alignment needs correction. Strategic tooth movement is often essential before implant placement, especially since implants, once placed, are immovable. Orthodontists use tools like braces or clear aligners to create optimal spacing and alignment, not just for aesthetics, but also to ensure the long-term success of the implant.

The oral surgeon is responsible for the surgical phase of treatment. This includes placing the titanium implant post into the jawbone with precision, sometimes performing additional procedures such as bone grafting or sinus lifts when necessary. Their goal is to ensure a solid foundation for the future res-

toration while minimizing surgical risk and promoting proper healing.

In some cases, the oral surgeon may also consult with a periodontist to manage the health and shape of the gum tissue surrounding the implant. This is especially important in patients with a history of gum disease or when aesthetics are a priority in the smile zone.

Once the foundation is secure, the general dentist may work with a prosthodontist to design and place the final restoration—typically a crown, bridge, or denture. Prosthodontists specialize in restoring function and appearance with highprecision prosthetic teeth.

While collaboration between providers was introduced in the

first article, this second part highlights the distinct roles each professional plays during the process. The timing and sequence of care matter, and it’s often the general dentist who coordinates this multidisciplinary effort to ensure that every stage of treatment is integrated, efficient, and tailored to the patient’s needs.

Women’s Teeth and Gums

A smile is the first impression that communicates a woman’s happiness and confidence; if you wish to keep your winning smile out in front, you will want to take special care of what’s behind it – your periodontal (gum) health.

Periodontal health is connected to a woman’s overall health. As your health care needs change throughout your life, during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, your oral care needs may change.

Hormonal fluctuations during these times may affect your gum tissue and the underlying bone that support your teeth. These changes may increase your susceptibility to periodontal disease and require you to take special care of your oral health.

Gum Care During Puberty

When a young woman enters puberty, the production of sex hormones, such as progesterone and estrogen increase. Studies show that these elevated hormone levels may cause gum sensitivity and lead to a greater reaction to any irritation, including food particles and plaque. During this time, the gums can become swollen, turn red, and may feel tender.

Menstruation and Gingivitis

During menstruation, some women may experience gingivitis. This condition may cause gingival (gum) bleeding, redness or swelling of the gums, sores on the inside of the lip and cheek, a slight burning sensation or gum discomfort. It is important to maintain good oral health during these hormonal fluctuations. However, in some cases, periodontal treatment and antimicrobial agents may be recommended to ensure that your periodontal health is at its best.

Pregnancy and Gum Disease

If you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant, you need to know that your periodontal health can affect your pregnancy and ultimately the health of your baby. Studies have shown that any infection, including gum infection during pregnancy, may put you at a significant risk of delivering a preterm, low birth weight baby.

If you are already pregnant and have been diagnosed with periodontal disease by your general dentist, a simple non-surgical procedure called scaling and root planning performed by an experienced periodontist may significantly reduce your chances of complications.

Medications Including Oral Contraceptives

Birth control pills may make you susceptible to oral health con-

Synthetic hormones in the oral contraceptives are designed to mimic pregnancy and may cause your gums to turn red, bleed, and swell.

Also some commonly prescribed medications such as antidepressants and certain heart medications may cause dry mouth, increased plaque build-up and enlarged gum tissue. These conditions frequently result in bacterial infections under the gum line causing bleeding gums and bad breath. Make an appoint-

ment and speak with your periodontist if you are experiencing these symptoms.

Your Changing Body During Menopause

During menopause or postmenopause, you may notice a change in the way your mouth looks or feels. You may, for example, experience discomfort including pain, burning sensations in the gums tissue, mouth sores or apthous ulcers, and altered tastes. Saliva substitutes are available from your periodontist to help

lessen the effects of a “dry” mouth that many women experience. Postmenopausal women may significantly reduce tooth loss by controlling their periodontal disease, especially if diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Diligent at-home oral hygiene, professional cleanings, and periodontal evaluations are an essential part of your overall health care.

Make an appointment for a periodontal evaluation with an experienced periodontist today.

Our patients mean the world to us (and they love to refer to us as friends and family). My team works together to ensure your visit is enjoyable, and that your treatment is gentle and pain-free. We are deeply committed to help you prevent and treat periodontal (gum) disease, and to enhance your smile to improve your overall health.

Ensuring Healthy Smiles and Sound Sleep For Your Child

Proper breathing during sleep is crucial for the overall well-being of children, yet many parents may not be fully aware of potential issues related to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD), which includes pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

SRBD refer to disturbances in normal breathing patterns during sleep, ranging from common snoring to more severe pauses in breathing known as

apnea events. These interruptions can lead to sleep deprivation and a variety of health complications. In the case of children, untreated SRDB can result in developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges, potentially leading to conditions like allergies, ADD/ADHD, and depression.

Pediatric OSA, a condition where the airway is partially or completely blocked during sleep, is often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids and a lack of tongue space. It differs from adult OSA, as it may manifest alongside behavioral issues and daytime sleepiness in children.

The Importance Of Proper Sleep and Open Airways For Children

During the first 18 months of a child’s life, crucial growth and developmental milestones occur, many of which are related to facial development. Ensuring proper breathing is

Why Sleep Matters More For Women

The Overlooked Key To Health and Wellness

Sleep is not just a time to rest— it’s a critical pillar of health, especially for women. From hormone regulation to immune support, quality sleep plays a profound role in nearly every aspect of a woman’s well-being.

Hormonal Balance

One of the most important benefits of sleep for women lies in hor-

monal health. During sleep, the body regulates hormones like cortisol, insulin, and those related to the menstrual cycle. Inadequate sleep can disrupt this balance, potentially worsening PMS symptoms, affecting fertility, and contributing to weight gain.

Mental Health and Mood

Women are more likely than men to experience anxiety and depression, both of which are closely linked to poor sleep. Regular, restorative sleep helps regulate mood and lowers stress levels. It also supports cognitive functions like memory, decision-making, and concentration—key components for women juggling multiple roles at work and home.

Sleep has a direct impact on metabolism. Lack of sleep can in -

TMD From a Woman’s Perspective

Believe it or not, most of the research out there shows that women are more prone to TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders) issues than men. There are a few theories on this that might be interesting to investigate. First of all, women are regarded as generally being more sensitive than men and even more nurturing. This

might explain why they would feel more pain or be more aware if there is a problem with the body. And being the nurturer in the family means being more aware of not only their own pain, but the pain of others. Maybe this is why the new patients that we see are mostly women.

Another factor with women experiencing more TMD is that the disease process known as EDS (Ehler Danlos

Syndrome) is far more common in women than men. In fact, the most common subtype of EDS (hEDS- hypermobile EDS) shows that 90% of the patients are women. This number is staggering. And with the more common forms of EDS, it turns out that the prevalence is roughly 70% women and only 30% men have it. Again, this is a remarkable difference that exists in a disease process that greatly affects

Jaw Pain, Clicking or Popping

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

TMD. With EDS the ligaments and joints are all looser than they should be so the discs on top of the jaw bones (the condyles) are far more likely to slip off or become displaced. So along with joint laxity, the EDS patient has to contend with a much higher risk of developing TMD problems. According to many of the doctors who treat EDS, joint laxity is a much more common disorder (disease) than previously thought and is far more prevalent amongst our people than anyone really realizes. What this means for the TMD patient is that they have another problem to contend with potentially and a higher need for treatment exists. Maybe this is why so many people are hurting, have displaced discs, and are not all that aware of the problem? Many people show up at the doctor’s office not really sure why they are aching, have headaches, jaw pain, neck pain, or even tremors when all along it’s a TMD problem that can and should be dealt with.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”

- D. Thomas

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Women also have the added problem as they age, their estrogen levels begin to drop. During menopause the lower levels of estrogen predispose the jaw joints to degenerate and this can increase alveolar bone loss. The bone loss means the structure of the jaw joint is breaking down which will mean the disc can slip off the condyle more readily and TMD issues begin to take place: headaches, neck pain, etc. Regardless of the situation, it does seem that women are more prone to TMD problems and should have a proper professional diagnose their condition and treat it before it becomes more complicated and even more painful. Seek out a doctor who treats the TMD problem on a daily basis and take charge of your life!

Does My Child Really Need Dental X-rays?

It might be shocking to realize that children often need dental X-rays more often than adults. Your child is constantly growing and changing, and they are often more susceptible to tooth decay than adults. The enamel on childrens’ teeth is generally thinner allowing decay to spread more

rapidly than on adult teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that X-rays are preformed every six months to a year or more depending on their risk for tooth decay.

What Is the Purpose Of X-rays On Children?

Many parents are frustrated that their dentist reports that their child now has cavities, but at their previ-

ous check up they were cavity free. Cavities can form rapidly on children, however the absence of X-rays at a previous visit due to age or behavior may be the cause for the initial under diagnosis. Most parents are shocked to find that their child has cavities because they regularly brush twice a day and limit high consumption of sugars in their child’s diet.

Many parents admit that they

have not yet begun flossing due to either lack of child cooperation or failure to realize the importance of flossing at such a young age. X-rays can detect cavities that form in the areas between your child’s teeth that may not be seen on visible inspection. Once cavities are visually seen on areas between the teeth, these areas may be quite large, and actually approach the nerve of the tooth requiring more extensive treatment.

Eruption patterns of teeth can also be diagnosed with X-rays. Many children have delayed or advanced eruption patterns, or may even have permanent teeth that are missing or developing in an incorrect location. Early detection of these occurrences may help determine if early intervention or orthodontic treatment may be necessary. Many of these problems are more difficult to treat after the growth process is complete.

Children are known to being highly active and unfortunately prone to injury. Most commonly the upper front teeth take the brunt of the abuse and can suffer from root fracture, tooth displacement, color change, and mobility. Your child’s dentist may elect to take regular X-rays of this area to determine if any damage has occurred to the baby teeth or the permanent teeth underneath.

Are X-rays Safe?

Radiation is all around us, from microwaves, to airplanes, and even from the sun. With the amount of radiation we are exposed to with daily activities, the radiation from dental films is very negligible. Different dental offices have different forms of X-ray technology and therefore different levels of radiation from their equipment.

Digital X-rays offer the lowest form of radiation to patients, in some cases up to 80% lower than the traditional films most adults had as children. All dental offices are required to have routine inspections of their X-rays equipment by their state. It is also required that a lead apron be placed on your child for additional protection.

The Truth About Bunions

Do you think you inherited your bunion from your grandmother?

Or maybe you blame those tight, pointy shoes? It turns out, neither is quite true. While your grandmother’s bunion may seem like a genetic handme-down, what you actually inherited is her foot structure. That foot structure — if left unaddressed — leads to a bunion over time.

Here’s how it works: Different types of feet are prone to different problems. In the case of a bunion, the culprit is often a condition called

forefoot varus. This means the front of the foot is angled in relation to the heel. People with forefoot varus often have flat arches as well. Over time, as the foot twists to compensate for this misalignment and make contact with the ground, angular forces push the big toe in the opposite direction, step after step. This repeated motion creates the classic bunion.

But here’s the good news: Bunions aren’t inevitable. By correcting your foot mechanics, you can prevent — or even partially reverse — a bunion.

Correcting Foot Mechanics: The Key To Bunion Prevention

The secret to healthy foot mechanics is simple: Bring the earth to your foot, not the other way around. Instead of forcing your foot to twist and adapt to uneven ground, you fill the gap between your foot and the ground. Custom orthotics or insoles are the most effective way to achieve this.

Precision matters, and the more accurate the orthotic, the better it

Edentulous means lacking teeth. The complete loss of teeth (edentulism) due to gum disease and tooth decay can have severe consequences on your health. Complete dentures are an unacceptable substitute for natural teeth due to slippage, discomfort and inefficient chewing. Dental implants for endetulous patients are typically the best solution.

Edentulism is a complex condition due to the interaction between the disease and aspects that do not depend on the disease itself, such as biologic and patient factors. Edentulism presents socioeconomic problems to the worldwide health care systems.

Edentulous means lacking teeth.

How Does Edentualism Impact One’s Health?

Numerous studies have proved that the absence of teeth can impact the systemic health of patients in the following ways:

• Patients may reduce consumption of fruits and vegetables, fiber and carotene and they may increase the consumption of foods rich in cholesterol and saturated fats. This may lead to cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, stroke, aortic valve sclerosis and coronary problems.

• There may be an increase in gastric and duodenal ulcers, pancreatic tumors, upper gastrointestinal tract tumors and kidney problems due to the lack of antioxidants that control the inflammatory cascade.

• There is an increased risk of insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes, due to the increases fat and long chain carbohydrate consumption.

• People may decrease daily physical and social activity.

• People may develop sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea.

Diet appears to play a decisive role in the relationship between edentulism and general health. There

are studies that report a significant decrease in blood concentrations in vitamins A, C, folate and beta carotene in edentulous versus those with teeth. It is abundantly clear that a compromised or absent dentition has consequences, such as the restriction on the choice of foods, choking on food, poor digestion, alteration of taste, change in chewing efficiency, discomfort and premature facial aging. The selfimage issues associated with edentulism

adversely impact on ones socialization.

Studies show that 39% of the elderly edentulous patients cannot eat the food they want, 29% report a decrease in satisfaction from food and 14% avoid eating with other people.

Dental implant treatment can tremendously improve all the abovementioned issues.

Promoting Independence In Aging

How Caregivers Can Help Seniors Thrive At Home

Aging brings challenges, but it doesn’t have to mean a loss of independence. For many seniors, the ability to remain at home and retain control over their daily lives is central to maintaining dignity, confidence, and quality of life. Caregivers play a key role in supporting this independence while ensuring safety and well-being.

Foster a Safe, Adaptable Environment

Creating a home environment that balances independence and safety is essential. Simple modifications—grab bars in the bathroom, non-slip rugs, improved lighting— can reduce the risk of falls and accidents. Encouraging seniors to participate in decisions about these changes helps them feel in control rather than restricted.

Encourage Participation In Daily Activities

Even if a senior needs assistance, encouraging involvement in routine activities helps maintain motor skills and self-esteem. For example, a caregiver might invite a senior to help with meal preparation, light housekeeping, or selecting clothes for the day. These small tasks promote au-

Unlocking the Jaw How MRI Helps Diagnose TMJ Disorders

Jaw pain, clicking, or difficulty opening and closing the mouth can be signs of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. These issues affect the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull and can lead to chronic discomfort if left untreated. Because the joint involves both bone and soft tissue, getting an accurate diagnosis is essential. This is where MRI technology plays an important role.

Understanding TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders can have many underlying causes. Sometimes it stems from injury or arthritis. Other times it may be related to teeth grinding, muscle tension, or a misaligned bite. Common symptoms include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and clicking or popping sounds when the jaw moves. In more advanced cases, it can become difficult to eat or speak comfortably.

Pinpointing the source of the problem requires more than a visual exam or basic imaging. That is because many TMJ conditions involve soft tissues such as the disc that cushions the joint and the surrounding muscles and ligaments. These cannot be clearly seen with standard x-rays.

How MRI Provides a Clearer View MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, offers one of the most detailed ways to evaluate soft tissues. While x-rays and CT scans focus on the bones, MRI uses magnetic fields to create high-resolution images of

Considering Neck Lift Surgery?

Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin!

A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.

Neck Lift Surgery Can:

Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat

Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)

Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.

In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.

Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

Foot health is often overlooked, yet it plays a vital role in overall wellness—especially for women. Whether balancing work, family, or fitness, women put tremendous demands on their feet daily. From high heels to hormonal shifts, women face unique challenges that can lead to longterm foot issues if not properly addressed.

Common Foot Concerns For Women

Women are more likely than men to experience certain foot conditions, including bunions, plantar fasciitis, hammertoes, and neuromas. Poorly fitting shoes— especially those with narrow toe boxes or high heels—are often to blame. Pregnancy and menopause can also impact foot health, causing changes in foot size, arch height, and fluid retention, which can result in discomfort and swelling.

Choosing the Right Footwear

One of the most effective ways to promote foot health is by choosing supportive, properly fitting shoes. Look for options with:

• A wide toe box to avoid cramping toes

• Arch support for better alignment and shock absorption

• Cushioned soles to reduce pressure on joints

• Low to moderate heels to avoid strain on the ball of the foot

While stylish shoes are tempting, alternating them with supportive footwear can help prevent long-term damage.

Daily Foot Care Routine

Caring for your feet doesn’t require a spa day—just a few simple steps each day:

• Wash and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections

• Moisturize daily to prevent dry,

Women and Foot Care Steps Toward Lifelong Comfort

cracked skin

• Trim nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails

• Inspect feet regularly for any changes, swelling, or sores— particularly important for women with diabetes

When To See a Specialist

Persistent pain, swelling, numbness, or changes in the appearance of your feet or nails should never be ignored. Podia-

trists specialize in diagnosing and treating foot and ankle issues and can provide custom orthotics, physical therapy, or minimally invasive treatments as needed.

Staying Active, Pain-Free Exercise is essential for overall health, but it can take a toll on your feet if you’re not careful. Invest in good-quality athletic shoes tailored to your activity and foot type, and don’t skip stretching— especially your calves and arches.

and Health

The Bottom Line Foot health is essential for mobility, independence, and quality of life. By taking proactive steps to care for your feet— starting with proper footwear, a daily care routine, and regular checkups—you can prevent many common foot problems and keep moving with confidence and comfort for years to come. Prioritizing your feet means prioritizing your health.

Straighter Teeth With Invisalign

We live in a society that places great emphasis on first impressions, and a smile often plays a key role in how we are perceived. A smile filled with beautifully aligned teeth is more likely to create a favorable impression than one with crooked or misaligned teeth. In recent years, many people have turned to Invisalign as a modern and discreet method to achieve a more attractive smile.

Invisalign is a product manufactured and marketed by Align Technology, Inc., a company founded in 1997. The technology received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Ad -

ministration (FDA) in 1998 and has since become a popular alternative to traditional metal braces. One of the appealing aspects of Invisalign is that the treatment is often covered by dental insurance, similarly to conventional orthodontic care.

The Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners or trays that are custom-made for each patient. These trays must be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day to be effective. Like braces, Invisalign aligners gradually move the teeth into their desired positions by applying gentle, consistent pressure. Each set of aligners is typically worn for two to four weeks before switching to the next set in the series.

In addition to being nearly invisible, Invisalign aligners offer several advantages over traditional braces. They are generally more comfortable to wear because there are no metal wires or brackets that can cause irritation inside the mouth. The trays can be easily removed during meals, which allows for greater flexibility and eliminates the problem of food

getting trapped in braces. They can also be removed for brushing, flossing, or special occasions, making oral hygiene more convenient.

The first step in starting Invisalign treatment is to consult with an orthodontist or dentist who is certified to provide it. If you are deemed a suitable candidate, impressions or digital scans of your teeth will be taken and sent to Align Technology. A 3D model of your teeth, known as a Clin-Check, is created to show how your teeth will

gradually move throughout the course of treatment. Once the treatment plan is approved, a series of custom aligners is manufactured.

While Invisalign is a great option for many, it is not suitable for every dental case. A consultation with a certified Invisalign provider will help determine if it is the right choice for you. With dedication and proper use, Invisalign can help you achieve the beautiful, confident smile you’ve always wanted.

essential for a child’s health and development, impacting facial features, jaw development, and overall growth. Mouth breathing can set off a chain reaction of issues, altering the growth of the lower and upper jaws, midface, and nasal bones, ultimately affecting the child’s facial balance.

Pediatric Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) and OSA Symptoms

Children with SRDB may present a range of symptoms, including:

• Difficulty falling or staying asleep

• Sleepwalking, night terrors, and other parasomnias

• Excessive daytime sleepiness

• Mouth breathing, dry lips, bad breath

• Dark circles under the eyes

• Tonsil and adenoid problems

• Snoring

• Teeth grinding

• Bed-wetting

• Inner ear infections

• Limited tongue/lip mobility

• Hyperactivity

• Difficulty concentrating

• Selective eating habits

• Bedwetting

In the case of pediatric OSA, symptoms may involve snoring, breathing pauses, restlessness, and

coughing or choking episodes during sleep.

Dentist’s Role

Contrary to conventional belief, pediatric dentists with specialized training are well-equipped to address symptoms related to sleep and airway conditions. The airway, mode of breathing, and malocclusion are closely interconnected and should be addressed early and holistically by dentists. Advanced technology, such as cone beam 3D imaging, allows dentists to effectively diagnose airway issues and guide proper growth and development. Early intervention is essential in guiding proper growth and development.

Convenient at-home sleep study tests are now available to diagnose pediatric sleep apnea and breathing issues. These tests provide comprehensive, accurate data for proper diagnoses.

Treatment goals encompass the elimination of detrimental habits, guiding optimal cranial, jaw, and facial development, preventing dental misalignment, and enhancing airway health and oxygen sufficiency. Various therapies, including oral appliances, myofunctional therapy and positive airway pressure therapy, can effectively alleviate symptoms.

tonomy and a sense of purpose. Support Mobility and Physical Activity

Maintaining physical strength and flexibility is key to preserving independence. Caregivers can gently encourage movement, whether through supervised exercise, short walks, or stretching routines appropriate for the individual’s abilities. Remaining active not only supports mobility but also benefits overall health and mood.

Promote Cognitive Engagement

Independence isn’t just physical—it’s mental as well. Encouraging seniors to stay mentally active with reading, puzzles, hobbies, or conversation helps keep their minds sharp. Involvement in planning outings or managing personal tasks, like orga-

crease hunger hormones (ghrelin) and decrease satiety hormones (leptin), making overeating more likely. For women trying to manage weight, getting enough quality sleep can support healthier eating habits and improve the body’s ability to burn fat.

Immune Function and Disease Prevention

A strong immune system starts with sleep. Women who consistently get less than 7 hours of sleep per night are more susceptible to illnesses and chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders. Sleep helps the body fight off infections and reduce inflammation.

Beauty and Skin Health

The phrase “beauty sleep” isn’t just a cliché. During deep sleep, the body repairs and regenerates skin cells. Collagen production increases, helping to reduce wrinkles and main-

tain skin elasticity. Proper sleep can result in brighter, healthier skin and fewer breakouts.

Reproductive Health and Aging

Women going through menopause or pregnancy may experience disrupted sleep due to hormonal changes. Prioritizing sleep during these times is essential for easing symptoms like hot flashes, fatigue, and mood swings. Over time, consistent sleep also supports healthy aging and cognitive resilience.

Final Thoughts

Prioritizing sleep isn’t a luxury— it’s a necessity. Women should aim for 7–9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night and address sleep disturbances early. Whether you’re managing stress, balancing hormones, or pursuing weight loss, sleep may be the most powerful (and free) tool in your health arsenal.

Respect Personal Choices and Routines

Wherever possible, caregivers should respect a senior’s preferences about meals, daily schedules, and personal habits. Routine provides comfort, and preserving the rhythms of daily life helps seniors feel secure and self-reliant.

For family members, it’s important to remember that supporting independence doesn’t mean doing everything alone. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, professional home care services are available to provide the right balance of assistance and independence—helping your loved one continue living safely, comfortably, and confidently at home.

MRI is especially valuable when diagnosing internal derangements, which occur when the disc shifts out of place. This is a common cause of jaw locking, clicking, or chronic discomfort during everyday jaw movement.

Why an Accurate Diagnosis Matters

When a TMJ disorder is diagnosed with MRI, treatment can be far more targeted. Rather than relying on general approaches, providers can tailor care to the specific issue at hand. This might involve a custom bite appliance, physical therapy, or minimally invasive procedures designed to relieve pressure and realign the joint. MRI also helps rule out

other conditions that might mimic TMJ symptoms, which is important for building the right treatment plan from the beginning.

Technology-Driven Approach

Dentists believe that exceptional outcomes begin with precision. For patients experiencing jaw discomfort or symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, we may recommend advanced imaging such as MRI to get a complete picture of what is happening beneath the surface. This allows us to design personalized care plans that address the root cause and support long-term comfort.

If you are dealing with persistent jaw pain, headaches, or difficulty chewing, MRI can provide answers that lead to true relief. With the right tools and a thoughtful approach, we help patients move beyond symptoms and into lasting solutions.

2. Casting Your Feet: Using a special technique, we cast your feet in the optimal “sub-talar neutral” position, ensuring your orthotic starts with the perfect alignment.

3. Fabrication: The cast and our detailed instructions are sent to a lab, where your orthotic is custom fabricated using a model of your foot.
