Hurt in an Auto Accident?

Don’t Let Undiagnosed Whiplash Steal Your Quality of Life!

• Motion causes your symptoms, so it makes perfect sense that scanning during motion is more likely to reveal the problem.

The Power of Weight-Bearing Open MRI and Digital Motion X-Rays

Submitted by Washington Open MRI

Whiplash is a common injury that occurs in over 90% of all auto accidents. It happens when the head is suddenly jerked back and forth, which can cause damage to the soft tissues in the neck. Unfortunately, most people (90%+!) who suffer from whiplash don’t even realize it. And for those who do, the diagnosis is often missed or misdiagnosed. This unfortunately leads to long-term, permanent damage and disability with no compensation.

However, there is hope! Thanks to modern medical technology, we now have access to tools like weight-bearing open MRI’s and digital motion x-rays (DMX) that can help detect and diagnose whiplash with greater accuracy.

Weight-bearing open MRI’s are a game-changer because they allow patients to be scanned while standing upright. This means that doctors can get a more accurate picture of what’s going on with the spine, particularly in cases where whiplash has caused damage to the ligaments or other soft tissues. And because the patient is in a natural weight-bearing position, the scan can capture the full range of motion and flexion, which is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

But that’s not all. Weightbearing open MRI’s are also more comfortable for patients. They’re less claustrophobic than traditional MRI machines, and patients can watch TV or even have a loved one in the room with them during the scan.

Digital motion x-rays, or DMX, are another tool that can

help diagnose whiplash. Unlike traditional xrays and MRIs, which are designed to capture images of a patient who is standing still, DMX captures images of the spine in motion. This is important because, as we mentioned earlier, the symptoms of whiplash often present themselves when the patient moves their neck. With DMX, doctors can see the full extent of the damage and now develop a more accurate treatment plan.

The benefits of these technologies cannot be overstated. Not only do they provide a more accurate diagnosis, but they also help doctors develop better treatment plans. This means that patients who suffer from whiplash are more likely to receive the care they need to recover fully and avoid permanent damage.

But here’s the problem: many

people are unaware of these technologies, or they don’t know where to go to receive them. That’s why it’s so important to spread the word. If you or someone you know has been in an auto accident and is experiencing neck pain or other symptoms of whiplash, it’s essential to seek out a healthcare provider who offers weight-bearing open MRI’s and DMX.

Remember, whiplash is a serious injury that can cause longterm, permanent damage. But with the help of modern medical technology, we can improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

So let’s spread the word and encourage everyone to learn more about weight-bearing open MRI’s and DMX. Together, we can make a difference and help more people avoid the permanent impairment caused by whiplash.

Here’s How Eyeglasses Work A Clearer Perspective On Optical Health

Clear and precise vision is a gift that many people enjoy, thanks to eyeglasses. These marvels of optical engineering have been improving people’s lives for centuries. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how eyeglasses work to correct various vision problems and enhance optical health.

The Basics Of Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses are optical devices designed to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. They consist of two main components: lenses and frames.

Lenses: Lenses are the heart of eyeglasses. They come in various types, including convex (for farsightedness), concave (for nearsightedness), and cylindrical (for astigmatism) lenses. These lenses work by bending and focusing light rays so that they converge at a specific point on the retina, providing a clear image. Convex lenses are thicker at the center, while concave lenses are thinner at the center, allowing them to achieve this bending of light.

when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

This is a question I receive often from patients, and it’s also frequently asked on social media. In fact, there is no “right age” to have cosmetic surgery because we all age at different rates and have different ideas of what constitutes aging gracefully. But there is a right time – when we’re ready to fix something that bothers us. There is also a right reason – when there is a need to balance how we look with how we feel.

Our faces send messages that impact us profoundly, both personally and professionally. For example, permanent frown lines can make us look angry when we’re not, undereye bags convey tiredness, and a downturned mouth looks sad. Spider veins and sunspots make our faces look old and weather-beaten. And it’s the same for our bodies. These “error messages” are easily corrected by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon expert using today’s non-surgical technology.

Recent surveys show that more men and women are choosing no-downtime fixes to look good on Zoom as well as in person, to keep their professional edge, and to achieve balance so that how they look truly reflects how they feel. This inner-outer balance is important for both social and workplace interactions.

The most advanced dermatologists and plastic surgeons are doing cutting-edge research, publishing in renowned medical journals, and teaching globally how to combine state-of-the-art non-surgical techniques for the best results with no scarring and little or no recovery. This new, minimally-invasive approach is increasingly popular and, when properly performed, can give long-lasting results. More importantly, it gives natural results so that your face looks refreshed and restored rather than tweaked.

Ultherapy is a revolutionary new ultrasound technology to non-surgically lift your face and tighten your cheeks, jawline, neck

Am I The Right Age For Cosmetic Surgery?

and chest (decolletage). It can also lift and tighten buttocks, knees, arms and other body zones in preparation for summer. eMatrix and eTwo are innovative radiofrequency lasers that stimulate your skin through a unique process called sublative rejuvenation, producing new collagen and elastin to remove wrinkles and scars and tighten your skin.

The Exilis Ultra is another new laser technology that dramatically lifts and tightens the skin on your face and body by creating new collagen and elastin. This naturally lifts your face, including your eyebrows, and contours your body. The secret of Exilis Ultra is focused radiofrequency energy combined with ultrasound. This can simultaneously tighten your skin and remove unwanted fat from the chin, abdomen, arms, legs and other areas. In just a few quick and painless sessions, Exilis Ultra can take inches off your waistline, abdomen, buttocks and other areas, and can also improve cellulite.

The breakthrough Syneron Triniti laser system can rejuvenate all three layers of your skin in one session. The Triniti removes spider veins, sunspots, discolorations and wrinkles, improves prominent pores and tightens your skin. The CO2RE laser dramatically improves wrinkles, pigmentation, enlarged pores, scars and stretch marks for all skin tones from light to dark, and with minimal recovery time. The VBeam Perfecta laser treats birthmarks, rosacea, acne scars, leg veins, blood vessels on the face and body, sunspots, and even warts.

With summer approaching, the focus is also on hair removal. The newest and fastest hair laser is the GentleMax Pro. It is painless and gives rapid results for all areas of the body and face. Hair laser not only liberates you from razors, creams and other temporary hair removal, but can also free you of ingrown hairs and acne.

When expertly injected, the neuromodulators Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin or Daxxify safely smooth frown and worry lines, crow’s feet, and mouth and neck wrinkles, while preserving your normal facial expressions. For anyone who worries about looking unnatural with Botox, the key is to get your treatment from a real expert who understands how to reshape your face and preserve natural expressions rather than the dreaded Botox face-freeze or angry-looking “Dr. Spock”

eyebrows.

Under-eye bags and lines around your mouth disappear, thinning lips can be restored, your jawline and neck lifted and your whole face can be subtly yet dramatically reshaped by new techniques with natural fillers like Voluma, Volbella, Restylane, Juvederm, Belotero, Radiesse and Sculptra. Your own natural fat can be added to replenish stem cells and transform your skin contour and radiance. The key here is to avoid an unnatural “filler face”. There is a world of difference between sophisticated and natural-looking filler techniques and overdone, over-plump lips and cheeks.

A new addition is the so-called “Vampire Facelift”, which combines platelet rich plasma (PRP) with micro needling to harness your body’s own powers of rejuvenation. Scientific research shows that PRP is also an effective way to treat hair loss.

The philosophy of total rejuvenation and better quality of life at all ages has now extended to feminine (vaginal) rejuvenation that can be done nonsurgically with advanced lasers and fillers. Studies show this can have important benefits including relief of mild to moderate stress incontinence (urine leakage when coughing, sneezing etc.), vaginal dryness, and restoring more normal appearance and function in conditions such as LS & A

(lichen sclerosus et atrophicus). For feminine rejuvenation, the CO2RE Intima laser achieves rapid and long-lasting results and has been described as a more comprehensive and long-lasting treatment than non-laser devices like radiofrequency.

The American Board of Medical Specialties recognizes four specialties as having the right knowledge and training to perform cosmetic procedures – dermatology, plastic surgery, oculoplastic surgery and facial plastic surgery. Your dermatologist or plastic surgeon will be most expert if they are engaged in scientific research, direct sessions and teach at the national dermatology and plastic surgery academies, and have publications that can be found under their names on Pubmed at https:// pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

Your doctor should be able to offer you a wide variety of advanced procedures from which to choose, and create a customized plan to address your individual needs. Looking as good as you feel can bring a new appreciation of life, and how important it is to make the most of every day. The author Gertrude Stein wrote that “we are always the same age inside.” With the right technology in the right hands, we can reflect our inner youth and vibrancy, and empower ourselves to live life to the fullest at any age.

Dental Care For Mature Citizens

If you’re a baby boomer, born between 1946 and 1964, there are so many reasons to focus on and improve your oral health. Periodontal (gum) disease risks rise with age and can lead to a host of physical problems. There is no better day than today to get a checkup by a dentist specially trained in knowing the links between your mouth and body health.

Higher Risk Of Periodontal Disease

Boomers grew up in a time of prosperity, education, and opportunity. This generation has a greater need for oral treatment than any other. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 70% of Americans 65 and older have chronic gum disease. Surveys suggest that growing up in a time of plenty may have led to a taste for a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar. This has caused enamel erosion and gingivitis.

Research also shows that boomers can do better to protect their oral health. One survey shows only 40% of older people use mouthwash, 34% brush their teeth only once a day, and 47% say they often skip flossing.

When age-related conditions like arthritis or joint pain make proper brushing and flossing more difficult, it exacerbates the problem further.

Periodontal Disease and Alzheimer’s

Another reason to take care of your mouth as you age is the growing connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease. More than sixmillion Americans over 65 have been diagnosed with this form of dementia, a number projected to more than double by 2050.

A 2019 National Institutes of Health study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease shows the bacteria that cause gingivitis, the earliest form of periodontal disease, are also connected to several forms of dementia. One species of bacteria is believed to migrate from gum infections through the bloodstream and into the brain. There, they release enzymes that can destroy nerve cells, leading to memory loss and Alzheimer’s.

The relationship between dementia and gum disease goes the other way, too: People with memory loss may neglect their oral health and a mild problem may turn into something much more severe.

Research is underway to develop a drug that can block bad bacterial enzymes and slow the progression of dementia. Until then, it is imperative to take extra care of your teeth and gums as you age.

• Brush twice a day, floss once or twice a day, and visit your periodontist for a checkup.

• Cut out sugary foods and beverages. Use the artificial sweetener

xylitol, which is shown to starve harmful bacteria and reduce plaque buildup.

• Dry mouth lowers oral pH, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Talk to us about special alcohol-free oral rinses, lozenges, and other preventive measures.

• Swish with water after eating and consuming sweet and acidic drinks.

• Resolve to adopt a healthier diet and lifestyle for overall good

health. Studies show this alone may lower your risk for Alzheimer’s disease by up to 60%.

Aging does not mean gum disease and related health problems are inevitable. Baby boomers are known for being proactive about health care when they have the right information. Call us today for a no-charge phone consultation to answer any questions you may have. We are happy to do our part and help you improve your oral health in your golden years.

Healthy Mind In a Healthy Body

Submitted by Me Time Healing point of views, our conscious and how powerfully they are affecting our biological system.

Did you know that mind and body are connected? We generally tend to think that mind and body are two different concepts. But they can affect each other positively or negatively.

Mind and Body Are Connected, They Complete Each Other.

When we talk about this connection, we talk about our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, behaviors, our

Have you ever wondered why some of our biological symptoms appear when everything seems great? Our mind can affect our physiological well-being and on the other hand, our psychological well-being can be affected by our physiological wellbeing, like what we eat, how much we sleep, etc. Most of our bodily dysfunctions are derived from our automated thoughts.

Healing Without Borders Is Our Global

Our Body and Mind Should Be In Harmony For the Optimal Health That We Desire.

But how and why are they connected? Our brain, peripheral nervous system, endocrine and immune system, our emotions and all the organs in our body share the same chemical language and through this they are constantly in communication. Let’s think that our body is an organization. A big one! Each organ is a manager of their own system, but they are all connected to a director. If managers and directors lose their

communication somehow, the likelihood of unhealthiness will increase. Because the cause of most of the diseases are the failure of this organization. Without the proper information flow through mind and body the electrical functions fail, and brain can’t operate properly in some areas of the body. Since we talked about the technical part, we can surely talk about how we can find the harmony.

We generally tend to think that mind and body are two different concepts. But they can affect each other positively or negatively.

First, the balance should be established with awareness. We should realize that our body is a vehicle. In order to get this vehicle running, we should invest in it. The more we invest in our body, the more we invest in our mind and vice versa. How to improve your mental health? During an event we hardly recognize what is going on around us, or while we are doing something like driving, cooking, eating, or exercising, the same thing applies. So, to stop for a minute while you are reading this blog and try to recognize everything happening around you. The voices, the colors, the fragrances of the space around you & then focus your attention on your body, assess your body, see if you are feeling any discomfort? This is a small version of an awareness exercise. But if you practice this frequently, in time you’ll learn how your body reacts to certain stimuli around you and how it recognizes patterns of thinking in that specific moment.

Second, take care of yourself. Make time for yourself. If you get too busy to take care of your needs, you might disturb the communication of your body and mind. How to improve your physical health? We need to have some “Me Time” for emotional and physical well-being. You can build your own self-care systems. You can start by asking yourself about your needs and wishes. This doesn’t mean that you are becoming selfish; this means you are positively affecting your mind and body each day!

Treatment for a hiatal hernia

A hiatal hernia is a type of hernia that occurs when the stomach migrates from the abdominal cavity into the chest cavity through the diaphragm. Other organs may also migrate into the chest but most commonly it is the stomach that is involved. The stomach migrates through a natural opening in the diaphragm. The occurrence of a hiatal hernia may be precipitated by a weakness in the diaphragm and by factors that cause high pressure in

TMJ and Vision Disorders

Is There a Connection?

is a connection between TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) and vision, they will say there is not. However, if you really think about it, there can most certainly be a connection. The reason is the articular discs (jaw joint discs) are out of place, and inflammatory reaction sets into the body causing problems. This inflam-

mation can work its way throughout the entire body and will have a negative effect on many systems. Did you know that TMJ disorder correlates with many disease states and even to cancer? One of the overlapping symptoms of oral cancer is jaw pain. Going further, if you have slipped discs in the jaw joints, this might

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

affect the eyes and your vision can be compromised with blurry vision. Another poorly understood aspect of vision disorder can also correlate to distortion of the cranial bones. Research indicates that around 95% of us have bones in the skull that are not in alignment – i.e. they are distorted to some extent. Oftentimes, it is the sphenoid bone that goes right behind the eyes that is not level. When the sphenoid is not level as it should be, this will have the effect of making the eyes uneven which could cause distortion to your vision. If you ever notice that the frames of your glasses – the arm of the eyeglasses for example – are not level when you take your glasses off, it could be due to an uneven sphenoid bone. So now imagine you are walking down the street and your head is tilted to one side. This makes the eyes tilt as well and you can feel dizzy from this experience. Another observation might be that one eye is forward relative to the other due to a different kind of cranial distortion. This means one eye is ahead of the other. This will also cause potential eye problems due to the imbalances.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”

What does a person do about these issues? Well, maybe it’s a simple matter of vision correction: glasses, contacts, Lasik, etc. But what about a way to correct these imbalances? This is where the ALF wire steps in. This little wire is so gentle and ever so lightly levels the bones of the cranium while opening up a bit of the ‘tight’ areas in the skull. The leveling effect will help the bones become even and the eyes respond accordingly. The effect of opening takes pressure off the skull and even the eyes. This might help with vision distortions from the imbalances.

What does all this mean? It is often not as simple as seeing the optometrist and getting vision correction. It might also be logical to discuss with an ALF dentist if the cranial bones have some degree of distortion and if this can be corrected as well! This may not seem to be in the normal realm of what we normally would consider, but when you think about it, it really makes sense!

Weight Loss With Semaglutide

Semaglutide injections are part of a prescription-based, medically supervised weight loss program which also incorporates healthy eating and exercise. Originally prescribed for patients with type 2 diabetes, semaglutide is used to help with weight loss in those who are overweight or obese and also suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.

Semaglutide (known under the brand names Ozempec and Wegovy) targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. It also helps the pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar levels are high, smoothing out the extreme highs and lows that negatively impact hunger and metabolism.

Sixty to 70% of midlife women experience weight gain as they ap -

proach menopause. Unfortunately, throughout perimenopause, the rate of fat gain doubles and lean mass declines. In addition, fat distribution shifts and body composition changes, leading to an increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders, including high blood pressure and obesity.

According to a large doubleblind, placebo-controlled study of semaglutide effectiveness published in New England Journal of Medicine, adults who received semaglutide injections lost an average of 12.4% of their initial body weight compared to individuals who received placebo. Losing 5% to 10% of body weight has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in adult patients with obesity or those who are overweight.

If your weight loss efforts need a boost, consider weekly semaglutide injection therapy.

The older adult demographic is on the rise, presenting unique challenges in healthcare. Managing the health of aging patients can be intricate due to concurrent medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Moreover, the frequent use of prescription medications by older adults heightens their susceptibility to medication errors, drug interactions, and adverse reactions.

The process of delivering home oral healthcare and patient education/ communication can become intricate due to physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments often associated with aging. Dental issues that commonly af-

fect seniors include dry mouth (known as xerostomia), root and coronal caries, and periodontitis.

Notably, a staggering 19% of seniors no longer have any natural teeth, and a Massachusetts survey has unveiled that 34% of seniors experience dental discomfort. Alarmingly, more than half (53%) of seniors grapple with moderate to severe periodontal disease.

Tooth Loss

Seniors who have lost most or all of their teeth often struggle to maintain a balanced diet, as they may avoid fresh fruits and vegetables. Reliance on soft foods can lead to nutritional deficiencies and a decline in overall health. Additionally, these individuals may experience pain, speech difficulties, and feelings of embarrassment and reduced self-esteem, ultimately contributing to social isolation and loneliness.

Medical Considerations

A significant 39% of individuals aged 65 and older report using five or more prescription drugs, a situation that can become more complex when multiple healthcare providers and pharmacies are involved. It is crucial for dentists to regularly review the

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is an enlargement of the joint at the base of the big toe the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. This forces the toe to bend toward the others, causing an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Symptoms

• Development of a firm bump on the outside edge of the foot, at the base of the big toe.

• Redness, swelling or pain at or near the MTP joint.

• Corns or other irritations caused by the overlap of the first and second toes.

• Restricted or painful motion of the big toe.

Podiatric medical attention should be sought at the first indication of pain or discomfort because, left untreated, bunions tend to get larger and more painful, making nonsurgical treatment less of an option.

The primary goal of most early treatment options is to relieve pressure on the bunion and halt the progression of the joint deformity. A podiatric physician may recommend these treatments

Padding & Taping

Padding the bunion minimizes pain and allows the patient to continue a normal, active life. Taping helps keep the foot in a normal position, thus reducing stress and pain.

Anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections are often prescribed to ease the acute pain and Please see “Bunion,” page 61

Normalizing Cannabis For Seniors

In recent years, we have seen senior citizens and older adults among the fastest growing group of cannabis consumers. Potentially, they have the most to gain from easing arthritic pain, to providing better sleep. Our patients report improved cognitive function, increases in appetite where needed, pain management, regardless of source, and many other medical needs.

Having lived through many years of negative stigma associated with cannabis, seniors and older adults often feel more nervous about trying cannabis. Walking into a dispensary for the first time can be overwhelm-

ing. The best dispensaries will be able to answer questions about various forms of consumption and guide patients toward products most appropriate for their needs. Many have printed educational literature, and there are many more resources available via the internet:

https://www.safeaccessnow.org/patient_resources

https://www.aarp.org/health/drugssupplements/info-2020/cannabisuse-increasing-among-seniors/ Traditional medical organizations have been slow to endorse cannabis in large part because Federal law remains unchanged. However, many of these medical institutions have significant research programs. They remain cautious about potential side effects with traditional medicines.

As legalization is increasing, people in their 60’s to those in their 90’s are breaking through the barrier and enjoying first-hand the health benefits of cannabis. In general, cannabis is well tolerated in the adult population. Research is ongoing about medical benefits as well as potential side effects.

Restoring Health and Vitality As the Years Go By

Over the past few years you may have gained unwanted pounds, stopped exercising, have had disrupted sleep, ate badly and drank more than you used to. There are a few basic steps that address the most common issues that get in the way of vitality and aliveness.

You might find your sleep is disrupted, and it is possible that weight

gain has brought about sleep apnea, which is a dangerous condition that causes fatigue, weight gain, and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and hypertension. It is nearly impossible to feel well and to function optimally when sleep is disrupted. Addressing this with a physician can be extremely helpful.

Gastrointestinal problems are also common, including irregular bowel movements and bloating. Two common GI conditions are bacterial and yeast overgrowth, which when recognized can be easily treated. Dietary intolerances are also common and can be addressed with a physician who is able to address them.

Stress can exacerbate or accelerate hormonal deficiencies in men and women particularly when menopause or its male equivalent “andropause” is happening. Bio-identical hormone replacement is an approach where the Please see “Restoring Health,” page 61

Protect Your Back When Lifting

Lifting heavy objects constitutes a routine task in our daily routines, whether it’s relocating furniture, exercising, or undertaking physically demanding occupations. However, safeguarding the well-being of your back is paramount to avert potential injuries. By adhering to a set of vital guidelines and methods, you can ensure your back’s welfare during lifting endeavors.

Pre-Lift Warm-Up and Stretching: Before embarking on

any lifting task, it’s imperative to prime your body through warm-up exercises and stretching. Engage in several minutes of light aerobic activities like brisk walking or cycling to enhance blood circulation and elevate your body temperature. Subsequently, focus on stretching major muscle groups, particularly those in your back, legs, and shoulders. This will bolster your flexibility and diminish the likelihood of muscle strains or sprains.

Maintain Correct Body Mechanics: A cornerstone of safe lifting entails adhering to proper body mechanics. Initiate by positioning yourself close to the object you intend to lift, with your feet at shoulder width for stability. Bend your knees instead of your waist and maintain a straight back as you descend. Employ the strength of your legs, not your back, to execute the lifting motion. Keep the object close to your body, refraining from twisting or jerking movements while lifting or carrying it.

Saunas For Seniors’ Health

Since 1977, AT HOME CARE, INC. has helped thousands of persons enjoy the pleasure and peace of staying at home.

As people age, they encounter various health challenges. Here are the two most prominent health problems for seniors: arthritis and heart disease. Unfortunately, arthritis is a common condition affecting 49.7% of adults over 65. It can lead to pain and a lower quality of life. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among adults over age 65. Here are two most prominent risk factors that contribute to arthritis and heart disease:

• high blood pressure

• high cholesterol

Western medicine traditionally manages these two illnesses using prescribed medications. Yet, the possibility of using an alternative wholistic solution to address these and other health problems has been studied by renowned healthcare organizations and universities with some very intriguing findings.

For instance, based on reports from Harvard Health Publishing (Harvard Medical School of Science), “the use of a steam sauna can indeed have a positive impact on blood pressure. When you’re in a sauna, the high temperatures cause your blood vessels to dilate, leading to a lowering of blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels and reduced inflammation in the body. Nitric oxide production improves”. These chemical processes occur from raising the body temperature with “non-chlorinated steam”.

Are you aware that the illness known as “sitting disease” exists? This disease develops among young

Let’s face it; Essential oils are all the rage these days. Known for their unique healing and therapeutic benefits, essential oils have been used for centuries dating all the way back to 2000 BC. In recent years, the rise of essential oils has taken health care to an entirely new perspective, for uses like aromatherapy, ingestion and personal care. The following oils are the top essential oils for healthy, beautiful, gums and teeth.

Five Reasons To Schedule a Yearly Hearing Exam

If you haven’t had a hearing exam recently, you may be missing out on an opportunity to not only maintain good hearing health, but also overall well-being.

Hearing loss can be gradual and subtle, making it easy to overlook. So if you’ve been skipping your annual hearing exam, you’re potentially missing out on catching changes in your hearing, as well as other health

issues that are related to hearing loss. Here are five compelling reasons to get a hearing test every year:

1. Catch Hearing Loss At Its Onset: Scheduling a hearing exam is an easy step in identifying hearing loss early and allows for prompt intervention. Early detection not only helps in preventing further loss but also ensures that you can continue to enjoy the richness of sounds and conversations in your daily life.

2. Safeguard Your Cognitive Vitality: Hearing loss is not just an isolated issue; it has been linked to cognitive health, with research suggesting that untreated hearing loss can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Regular hearing exams can help detect hearing loss early, potentially mitigating its impact on cognitive functions and overall brain health, thereby preserving your quality of life, mental acuity, and preserv-

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.

An implant is a small titanium screw

that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realisticlooking and functional prosthetic tooth.

You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest

As the world around us shakes off the frosty grip of winter and bursts forth with new life, springtime heralds a period of renewal and rejuvenation. It’s a season of blossoming flowers, vibrant colors, and a palpable sense of awakening. And what better way to align ourselves with this natural rhythm of renewal than through the practice of yoga?

Yoga, an ancient discipline that originated in India, offers a profound opportunity to connect with the changing seasons and harness their energy for our own growth and well-being. As we transition from the dormancy of winter to the vitality of spring, yoga can serve as a powerful tool to awaken our bodies, minds, and spirits.

Physical Renewal

During the winter months, our bodies often become stiff and sluggish from the lack of movement and exposure to colder temperatures. However, as spring unfolds, there is a natural inclination to stretch, move, and embrace the newfound warmth and light. Yoga provides the perfect avenue to awaken our bodies from their winter slumber.

Dynamic yoga practices such as Vinyasa or Power Yoga can invigorate the body, build strength, and increase flexibility. These flowing sequences, synchronized with the breath, encourage us to move with fluidity and grace, mirroring the gentle movements of springtime breezes and swaying blossoms.

Mental Clarity

Alongside the physical benefits, yoga offers profound mental clarity and focus, qualities that are particularly valuable during the transition into spring. Just as the earth awakens from its hibernation, our minds too can emerge from a state of dormancy and embrace newfound clarity and creativity.

Mindfulness practices like meditation and pranayama (breath control) help to calm the mind, cultivate presence, and enhance our ability to appreciate the beauty and vitality of the spring season. By anchoring ourselves in the present moment, we can let go

Awakening the Spirit Embracing Yoga In Springtime

of the mental clutter accumulated during the winter months and approach life with renewed clarity and purpose.

Spiritual Reconnection

In addition to its physical and mental benefits, yoga offers a profound opportunity for spiritual reconnection, inviting us to tap into the deeper rhythms of nature and our own inner wisdom. Springtime, with its themes of rebirth and renewal, provides the perfect backdrop for this spiritual journey.

Through practices such as Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion) or Karma

Yoga (the yoga of selfless action), we can cultivate a deeper sense of connection with the world around us and foster a spirit of gratitude and compassion. Just as spring showers nourish the earth and awaken dormant seeds, our yoga practice can nourish our souls and awaken our innate capacity for love and interconnectedness.

Harmonizing With Nature

Ultimately, the practice of yoga in springtime is about harmonizing with the natural rhythms of the world around us and embracing the transformative energy of the season. As

we flow through our asanas, breathe deeply, and quiet the mind, we align ourselves with the burgeoning life force of spring, allowing it to infuse us with vitality, creativity, and joy.

So, as the days grow longer and the world comes alive with color and vitality, let us embrace the practice of yoga as a means of awakening our bodies, minds, and spirits. In doing so, we not only align ourselves with the beauty and abundance of the spring season but also deepen our connection to the eternal rhythms of nature and the divine within us all.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy has gained recognition not only for its cosmetic applications but also for its therapeutic benefits in improving ocular surface health. This innovative treatment modality uses pulses of light to target various underlying issues affecting the eyes, offering a range of benefits for individuals with conditions such as dry eye syndrome, meibomian gland dysfunction, and certain types of ocular surface inflammation. In this article, we’ll delve into the benefits of IPL for ocular surface health and explore why it has become a valuable tool in the field of eye care.

Understanding Ocular Surface Health

The ocular surface refers to the delicate tissues on the surface of the eye, including the cornea, conjunctiva, and eyelids, which play crucial roles in maintaining clear vision and protecting the eye from external irritants. Conditions that affect the ocular surface can lead to symptoms such as dryness, burning, redness, irritation, blurry vision, and discomfort, significantly impacting one’s quality of life.

How IPL Improves Ocular Surface Health

drome : IPL targets the underlying causes of dry eye by reducing inflammation in the eyelids and surrounding tissues. By improving meibomian gland function and enhancing tear film quality, IPL helps restore proper lubrication to the ocular surface, alleviating dryness and related symptoms.

Management of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): MGD is a common condition characterized by dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which produce the oily component of the tear film. MGD is often found in those who spend a lot of time looking at screens throughout the day as well as contact lens wearers. IPL therapy can unclog blocked meibomian glands, improve gland function, and promote the secretion of healthy oils, leading to a more stable tear film and improved ocular surface comfort.

Reduction of Ocular Surface

Inflammation: IPL’s anti-inflammatory effects are beneficial for various

inflammatory conditions affecting the ocular surface, such as blepharitis, rosacea-associated ocular manifestations, and certain forms of conjunctivitis. By targeting abnormal blood vessels and inflammatory mediators, IPL helps calm inflammation and promote healing of the ocular tissues.

Enhanced Tear Film Stability: A balanced and stable tear film is essential for maintaining a healthy ocular surface and clear vision. IPL therapy contributes to tear film stability by addressing underlying factors that contribute to tear film instability, such as lipid layer deficiency and inflammatory changes.

Advantages of IPL Treatment

1. Non-Invasive and Comfortable: IPL is a non-invasive pro-

cedure that does not require incisions or downtime, making it comfortable for patients. The treatment is well-tolerated, and many individuals experience minimal discomfort during and after the sessions.

2. Comprehensive Treatment Approach: IPL targets multiple aspects of ocular surface health, including inflammation, gland dysfunction, and tear film stability, providing a comprehensive solution for patients with complex eye conditions.

3. Long-lasting Benefits: With a series of IPL treatments, patients often experience long-lasting improvements in ocular surface health, reducing the reliance on supplemental interventions or medications.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy has emerged as a valuable tool for improving ocular surface health and treating a range of conditions affecting the eyes. From addressing dry eye syndrome and meibomian gland dysfunction to managing ocular surface inflammation, IPL offers a non-invasive, comprehensive, and effective treatment approach. As more research continues to support its benefits and clinical applications, IPL remains a promising option for individuals seeking to enhance their ocular comfort and overall eye health. Consulting with an experienced eye care professional can help determine if IPL is suitable for addressing specific ocular surface concerns and optimizing ocular wellness.

Speech therapy is a specialized field for the assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders in individuals of all ages. The primary purpose of speech therapy is to help individuals overcome challenges related to speech and communication skills, enhance language development, maintain vocal health and treat and manage swallowing disorders.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), commonly known as speech therapists, are highly trained professionals who assess and treat a wide range of communication disorders. These disorders stem from a variety of causes including developmental delays, neurological conditions, traumatic brain injuries, stroke, hearing impairment, or genetic syndromes.

Communication is the cornerstone of human interaction, providing for the expression of thoughts, emotions, wants and needs. However, for individuals living with a neurological condition such as Parkinson’s disease, clear communication can be challenging. Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, affects dopamine producing neurons in the brain manifesting a spectrum of motor and non-motor symptoms, affecting speech, cognition, and swallowing.

Parkinson’s disease introduces a host of vocal issues which can compromise the ability to communicate and affect an individual’s quality of life. Speech is often characterized by softness, breathiness, a harsh or gravelly sound, monotone, and diminished clarity due to impaired muscle control and coordination. Cognitive impairments, such as variable attention and memory issues further exacerbate communication challenges. Swallowing difficulties, termed dysphagia, can also emerge, placing the person at risk for aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition.

Enhancing Communication Skills In Parkinson’s Disease

Vocal strengthening is of paramount importance in the management of Parkinson’s disease to equip individuals with the ability to make themselves understood. Flat affect is common. Something as simple as helping people become aware of their facial expression and make a concerted effort to smile can make such a difference in their social interactions. These facial muscles can be developed through exercise

protocols related to vocal strengthening. Smiling invites people in and contributes to social connectedness and overall well-being.

Speech therapists use a number of techniques to improve respiratory support for speech, volume and clarity, in addition to providing cognitive therapy and managing dysphagia.

No two people with Parkinson’s disease are alike. Treatment must

be tailored to accommodate the specific needs and goals of the individual. Exercise and socialization are essential to living successfully with Parkinson’s, not only physical exercise but vocal exercise as well. Through targeted and personalized care, therapists empower individuals to reach their full potential and communicative abilities.

Parkinson’s disease is what people have; it’s not who they are.

Providing communication skills training, including, but not limited to, the therapeutic treatment of speech, cognitive, and swallowing challenges related to stroke, Parkinson’s, and dementia.

OPTICIAN

As manager of McNelly Optical in the Sajak Pavilion, my goal is to set our store apart from other optical outlets through the quality of the customer experience and our attention to detail. Our boutique caters to clients that desire quality eyewear that doesn’t look like everyone else’s. My staff and I will consult one-on-one in frame selection offering advice both in fashion and suitability to the patient’s prescription. We will make recommendations for the best results. As independent opticians, we depend upon our expertise to attract referrals from local eye specialists who often send us their most challenging cases.

I hold a degree in business administration. I completed an opticians apprenticeship and became certified by the American Board of Opticianry in 1978.

I have worked throughout many different areas of the optical industry in both retail and wholesale. I spent 25 years with prominent French frame manufacturer Logo Paris. I also represented the luxury eyewear lines for Cartier and Tag Heuer in the Eastern United States. I returned to my retail roots in 2012 and joined the management team at McNelly Optical Co in 2017.

I am a native Annapolitan with a passion for the sea shore. I am married with 2 adult sons and enjoy traveling.

What were your goals at the beginning of the year? Have you met your goals? Are you moving in the right direction? Is it hard to stay on track?

Losing “stubborn fat” is hard and as you get older – it just gets harder and harder. You might go to the gym five days a week, sweat on the treadmill for an hour, and see maybe a pound or two drop in a month. Is that really worth your time?

Or... imagine going to a medical facility, laying down, spending 35 minutes relaxing, then getting up and finding out you’ve lost two inches around your waist. Which do you prefer? What if you could keep doing that and losing more and more fat until you looked like you did years ago?

If you have any interest in this and how it works when it comes to inch loss, you should stop what you’re doing and call the office for an appointment immediately. This new treatment technology uses a special laser therapy to trick your mitochondria (in your fat cells) to release their fat contents.

If you eat better, drink plenty of water, stay away from sugars, and carbohydrates, this can lead to permanent fat loss without surgery. Here’s a heads up. If you have tried liposuction in the past – you know that when you “regain the weight” it goes to different place(s) – making your body look distorted and then unfortunately, you’re back to where you started, only worse. With this technology we don’t destroy your fat cells. What we do is we simply drain the contents of the fat cells so you lose the inches and look good again.

How Hospice Social Workers Make Everyday Moments That Matter

There are many moving stories about how a hospice social worker helped a patient get married or take that one last trip to the ocean. These are impactful, memory-making moments that go a long way to honor the patient’s final wishes while helping a

family heal after their gone.

But I’m not going to share those kinds of moments.

I’m going to share moments like helping the patient make a phone call to an estranged family member -- or giving them permission to NOT make that phone call. Counseling a daughter whose mother no longer knows who she is due to dementia. These are moments that matter, everyday moments, that are nurtured by a hospice social worker.

Families can be messy. For many, making moments that matter means reconciling grudges or misunderstandings. A social worker might start some conversations with the patient to explore the history of the rift and what the difficulties are. Then, there can be a family meeting where the social worker is a third-party intermediary to guide a talk about giving or asking forgiveness.

The moment that matters here is to give all involved healing before the patient dies and they’ve lost the opportunity. For the patient, this unfinished business could cause extra stress at the end of their life, leaving behind unresolved issues.

Sometimes a patient is not able or willing to reconcile. Then social workers become a support for the family to help them find in some other way the peace they hoped would happen before their person died.

Memory making moments like going to an Orioles game or making a big birthday party happen can be a challenge for social workers that leads to an important moment for everyone. But I’m also helping to make moments that matter each time that I am with a patient who shares how great it is to watch Jeopardy with their family or asks to help them call a long lost relative to say, “I’m sorry.”

Some moments that matter are even simpler. A family asked that I visit their father every week, which I did for three months while he was in our care. On a few visits I had to complete about five minutes of paperwork. The rest of the time was just being there. To listen. To talk. Each week I knew I made a difference. Each week I knew I had made moments that mattered.

Springtime Allergies Exploring Holistic Options For Relief

As the earth awakens from its winter slumber, spring ushers in a symphony of blossoms, warmer temperatures, and outdoor adventures. However, for many children, this season also brings the unwelcome companionship of allergies, casting a shadow on their enjoyment of the great outdoors. While conventional medications offer relief, exploring holistic options can provide children with natural alternatives for managing springtime allergies.

Understanding Spring Allergies

Spring allergies, commonly known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, occur when the immune system reacts to pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. For children sensitive to these allergens, exposure can lead to symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, and coughing. While medications like antihistamines and nasal sprays are effective in alleviating symptoms, some parents seek holistic approaches that address the root cause of allergies.

Holistic Options For Allergy Relief

Proper Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can support the immune system and reduce the severity of allergic reactions. Foods high in vitamin C, such as oranges and strawberries, possess natural antihistamine properties, while omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can help reduce inflammation.

Herbal Remedies: Certain herbs and botanicals have been traditionally

Keeping Our Children Safe

Here are eight things you can do to protect your children from getting injuries:

• Supervise children at all times and intervene when there is inappropriate behavior such as pushing or shoving.

• Make sure playground equipment is age appropriate. Maximum fall height should be five feet for preschool-aged children and seven feet for school aged children.

• Avoid any equipment that has openings that could entrap a child’s head.

• Make sure you can clearly see your children on the playground.

• Remove tripping hazards such as tree stumps, or rocks.

• Avoid playgrounds with asphalt, concrete, grass, and solid surfaces under the equipment. Look for surfaces of hardwood fiber, mulch chips, pea gravel, fine sand or rubber to a depth of at least nine inches.

• Wear appropriate protective gear during sports activities (for example, shin guards for soccer, a hard-shell helmet for baseball or football, body padding for ice hockey, and helmet when on a bike or skateboarding).

Overall, summertime play for children can be great fun. But it’s important to keep in mind prevention strategies and safety tips.

• Swing seats should be made of plastic or rubber. Metal or wood should be avoided.

Compression

A compression fracture is a collapse of a vertebra. It may be due to trauma or due to a weakening of the vertebra (compare with burst fracture). This weakening is seen in patients with osteoporosis or osteogenesis imperfecta, lytic lesions from metastatic or primary tumors, or infection.

Along with back pain, spinal compression fractures can also cause:

• Pain that gets worse when you stand or walk but with some relief when you lie down

• Trouble bending or twisting your body

• Loss of height

• A curved, stooped shape to your spine

Treatments

Treatments include conservative measures such as bracing, NSAIDS and muscle relaxers for 4-6 weeks. Sometimes interventional procedures such as kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty can be considered for early relief.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty, similar to vertebroplasty, is designed to stop the pain caused by a spinal fracture, to stabilize the bone, and to restore some or all of the lost vertebral body height caused

Grateful For the Air We Breathe

As a fertility doctor, I am always looking for ways to help my patients optimize their chances of conception. While medical interventions can be effective in some cases, I always emphasize the importance of adopting a holistic approach that includes taking advantage of the benefits of nature.

Studies have shown that exposure to nature can have a salubrious effect on our overall well being, and this is especially true for those who are trying to conceive. Fresh air, sunlight, and natural environments can all play a vital role

in regulating hormonal imbalances, reducing stress levels, and improving the quality of sperm and eggs.

As a doctor, I am always grateful for the power of nature to heal and rejuvenate our bodies and minds. Whether it’s taking a walk in the park, going for a hike, or simply sitting outside and breathing in the fresh air, these small moments can have a significant impact on my patients’ fertility outcomes.

Therefore, I encourage my patients to appreciate the value of nature in their quest for parenthood. By embracing a healthy, holistic lifestyle and taking care of their bodies, minds, and the environment around them, they can optimize their chances of conception and enjoy the benefits that come with embracing nature.

While medical treatments and procedures are essential, taking advantage of the benefits of nature can significantly impact fertility outcomes. As a doctor, I am always grateful for the power of nature to heal and rejuvenate, and I encourage my patients to embrace it on their journey towards parenthood.

Do you wonder why all the media’s attention is focused on selfligating brackets? Self-ligating (SL) braces have been around for over 20 years and are based on a “low-friction”

Conventional braces use colored elastics or metal ties to secure, or “ligate” the brackets to the archwire thus creating friction or resistance requiring heavier forces to accomplish tooth movement. With the improved efficiency of self-ligating brackets and high tech wires combined with modernized treatment mechanics, there is little to no friction or resistance when utilizing a closing clip or door mechanism to “ligate” the bracket to the wire consequently requiring lighter forces to move teeth.

Schizophrenia Serious, But Treatable

Schizophrenia is a serious, but treatable illness which affects the brain. One person in 100 has this illness. It is a disease that makes it difficult for an individual to tell the difference between real and unreal experiences, to think logically or to have a normal emotional response. Sleeping and remembering may be difficult.

Symptoms usually appear slowly over months, though they may occur suddenly. At times symptoms may be confused with those of other conditions. A person may feel tense, have difficulty concentrating or sleeping. Often there is a tendency to withdraw from activity.

As the illness progresses, symptoms of psychosis appear. These can vary. A person may begin to act or

speak strangely. Hallucinations may develop. A person sees, feels, smells, and hears things that are not really there. There may be physical symptoms, unusual movements or the person may sit or stand in strange positions. Some people become almost motionless, while others may move constantly.

Without proper diagnosis and treatment, symptoms tend to come and go. Getting appropriate treatment can break this cycle. Proper treatment usually can control symptoms just as insulin controls diabetes. Most people can lead productive, satisfying lives.

Like many illnesses, primary treatment is medication and learning to manage the illness. The major medications used are called neuropletic medicines. They work by changing the balance of the chemicals in the brain.

Although these medicines may effectively control symptoms of the illness, they often may create side effects of their own; muscle spasms, restlessness, tremors, grimacing. There are new medications which promise to be more effective and create less side effects.

Structured support can be helpful in assisting the person to regain a stable environment. Psychiatric rehabilitation is one option which serves this func-

10 Summer Bucket List Ideas For 2024

Submitted By Empowered Connections, LLC

1. Make some sun tea. Grab an old glass jar and put it in the sun for no more than four hours. Then make a simple syrup by boiling one cup sugar with one cup water on the stove until the sugar is dissolved and once cooled, add it to said sun tea. DELISH!

2. Find a local live outdoors music event that’s free. Grab some chairs, some water (or bring your sun tea!), some snacks, and head out to enjoy it in the cooler evening hours. Bliss!

3. Go to the beach for the day! Just grab your chair, water, and a good book and perch on the sand for as long as you want. Don’t forget your sunscreen!

4. Make a goal to read one summery beach read that’s just for fun. No self-help books y’all!! Pick an easy read by an author you enjoy and just get lost in the story.

5. Find some fresh local produce and have a meal with all the things you can find. So fresh tomato slices, fresh sweet corn, some watermelon, etc. No one says you gotta have meat with every meal so enjoy the tastes of the season!

6. Start planning your fall garden. Mid-July is the time to start planting your fall beauties. So why not try to grow a couple of things?

7. Go tubing. This is a very popular weekend activity in the south and for good reason cuz it’s so much fun and refreshing! Just grab an inner-tube (make sure it’s a sturdy one) and drop it into a local river or creek and have fun!

8. Go on a wine tasting tour one weekend afternoon. How much fun is that to be driven around by a van driver who takes you to 3-5 wineries? You never know what new wine you may fall in love with!

9. Go explore a new park or hiking

Lower back arthritis, also known as lumbar facet arthropathy, can cause debilitating pain and discomfort, significantly impacting one’s quality of life. However, there are advanced interventional procedures available that can provide long-lasting relief. In this article, we’ll explore the effectiveness of medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation in treating facet arthropathy, helping you regain control over your life.

Understanding Lower Back Arthritis: Lower back arthritis pri-

marily affects the facet joints, which are responsible for providing stability and enabling movement in the spine. Over time, wear and tear, injury, or degenerative conditions can lead to inflammation and pain in these joints, resulting in lower back arthritis.

Medial Branch Blocks: Medial branch blocks are minimally invasive procedures designed to diagnose and treat facet joint pain. During the procedure, a small amount of local anesthetic is injected near the medial branches of the nerves that supply the affected facet joints. This temporarily blocks the pain signals, allowing the pain management specialist to confirm the source of the pain.

Medial branch blocks not only provide diagnostic information but can also offer immediate pain relief, enabling patients to resume their daily activities without discomfort. If the medial branch block provides significant pain relief, it indicates that the

Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis

What Is Osteoporosis?

Bone loss is a natural part of aging in all people. But some people develop a disease called osteoporosis, and for them, bone loss is severe. Bones become fragile and break easily. Fractures can happen almost anywhere in the body, including the spine, hip, leg, pelvis, and wrist.

More women than men develop osteoporosis, but bone health should be a priority for both men and women.

At Risk For Osteoporosis?

Examine your heritage:

• Are you Caucasian or Asian? These two ethnic groups are more likely to develop osteoporosis than are other ethnic groups.

• Are you thin and petite? Because small people, women in particular, have less bone mass to begin with, they are at greater risk for the disease.

• Do you have older relatives who have curvature of the spine (sometimes

called “dowager’s hump”), loss of height, fractures, or chronic back pain? If so, you may have inherited a tendency toward osteoporosis.

Examine your health history:

• Have you passed menopause? In women, estrogen aids in the production of bone mass. At menopause, the amount of estrogen their bodies produce declines sharply.

• Have your menstrual periods stopped? Women who have had a hysterectomy, women who are high-performance athletes, and women who diet excessively or who have an eating disorder may stop having periods. These women have had a hormonal change that can cause bone loss.

• Are you taking medicines that increase the risk of osteoporosis? The most common culprits are steroid medications and high doses of thyroid hormone. Long-term use of these medicines can cause bone loss.

Examine your lifestyle:

Prevent Your Teen Driver From Becoming Another Tragic Statistic

The recent rash of fatal car accidents claiming the lives of teenagers in the Washington Metropolitan area has raised awareness of the dangers associated with teen driving. Advancements in technology such as mobile email and text messaging have added to the lengthy list of dangerous distractions already present with everyday teen

driving. Statistics regarding teen car accidents are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), traffic fatalities are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. Furthermore, The CDC also reports every year about 250,000 teens are injured in car accidents. Coupled with dangers always present with driving during the warm weather and spring season, such as inclement weather and increased alcohol consumption, it is imperative that parents consistently counsel their teens on safe driving. Furthermore, supervising newly licensed teens is paramount, as statistics show crash risk particularly high during the first months of licensure. Here are some suggestions to go over with your teen driver:

• No cell phone usage while operating the vehicle. In fact, the cell phone should be off.

Mold A Growing Problem

Most people are familiar with mold, but few know exactly what it is, what causes it, and the negative effects it can have on a home. Mold is made of tiny fungi particles that feed off organic material. For mold to grow, it needs a food source, a certain temperature, and moisture. When these conditions are present, molds can germinate and colonize. How fast growth occurs depends on the combination of conditions. Spores can germinate after 24-48 hours, and in some cases as few at 12 hours.

Indoor environments offer an ample food supply—drywall, wood, insulation, paper. When these materials become damp or wet, settled spores can become growing molds. This is why mold is such a concern following leaks and flooding. Molds may colonize in 1 to 12 days depending on the type of mold.

The musty odors produced by molds are known by scientists as Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOC’s.) Some MVOC’s produce musty and moldy odors, which result from the chemical changes taking place during the mold life process. Odors from MVOC’s are a sign that mold is actively growing and so may indicate a level of mold contamination requiring remediation.

Mycotoxins, the fungal toxins mold spores release, can cause adverse health effects. The most common symptoms are respiratory issues, congestion, sore throat, difficulty breathing, and skin and eye irritation. The risk of negative health conditions

May is already here; where has the year gone? Have we been present this year, or are we in a trance? Most of us have been in a trance, a state of...whatever. We are finally waking up from the trance we have been in for the past four years or so. COVID,

flu, RSV, and any of the old and new viruses we have been living with or dying from are now in our awareness and concern, and hopefully in the past. It’s a time to plan and set intentions for the year 2024.

It’s a time to eliminate unwanted stuff, spring cleaning physically, mentally, and emotionally. With endings come new beginnings. New beginnings are about being new, being who you want to be, and not what others want you to be. New beginnings have a new exciting energy, a feel-good energy that resonates within your mind, body, and spirit (soul). It’s a time to plant figuratively and physically, a time to plant flowers, fruits, seeds of all types.

Gum Disease Treatment Options

Soft tissue management offers a non-surgical approach to effectively control periodontal disease. It is important to note that while there is no cure for periodontal disease, it can be effectively managed and controlled through appropriate measures.

So, what exactly is soft tissue management? It is a plan designed to eliminate infection in the gums and root surfaces. Your dentist, hygienist, and you will work together to determine the most suitable plan for your needs.

The hygienist will play a crucial role in performing treatments aimed at eliminating infection, providing recommendations to enhance your daily oral hygiene practices, and guiding you towards achieving and maintaining oral health.

One significant aspect of soft tissue

management is root planing, which involves treating the diseased root surfaces located below the gum line. Unlike a routine dental cleaning, which primarily focuses on cleaning teeth above the gum line, root planing specifically targets the removal of tartar and plaque below the gum line, detoxifying the root surfaces affected by the disease.

So, what are the goals your dentist aims to achieve through soft tissue management? They include having gums that are healthy and do not bleed, fresher breath and taste, gums that are not red, swollen, or tender, knowledge on how to maintain good oral hygiene effectively, reduced pocket depths, and control over the progression of periodontal disease.

To ensure the success of this treatment, your dentist relies on your cooperation as the patient. This involves completing the periodontal therapy as prescribed, thoroughly cleaning all tooth surfaces twice a day, and adhering to regular re-care visits. For patients with adult periodontitis, supportive three-month re-care visits are particularly essential for the successful outcome of the therapy.

By participating in soft tissue management and following your dentist’s recommendations, you can effectively control periodontal disease, maintain your oral health, and enjoy the benefits of healthier gums and fresher breath.

How Eyeglasses Correct Vision

Eyeglasses work by altering the way light enters the eyes to compensate for the refractive error. When you have a vision problem, the light entering your eye does not focus correctly on the retina, causing blurry or distorted vision. Eyeglasses modify the path of

incoming light, bending it to match the eye’s natural focusing ability, thus producing a clear image on the retina.

Regular Eye Exams

To ensure that your eyeglasses continue to provide optimal vision correction, it’s crucial to have regular eye exams. Eye health can change over time, and your prescription may need to be adjusted. A qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist can assess your vision and make the necessary adjustments to the prescription for your glasses. Also the fit and adjustment of your glasses should be frequently checked by a qualified optician.

Finding Calm with Acupuncture Reducing Anxiety In Seniors

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing practice that has been used for thousands of years to treat various health conditions, including anxiety. For seniors, acupuncture can be particularly beneficial in managing anxiety due to its gentle, non-invasive nature and its potential to address a range of physical and mental health issues. Here are some ways acupuncture can help seniors with anxiety:

Balancing the body’s energy: Anxiety can result from an imbalance or blockage of Qi. By inserting thin needles into specific acupuncture points, practitioners aim to restore balance and harmony to the body’s energy flow, which can help alleviate anxiety symptoms.

Promoting relaxation: Acupuncture treatment can induce a deep state of relaxation. The needles stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, which can contribute to feelings of well-being and calm.

saunas

adults whose jobs require them to “sit for long periods of time in the same position”. Just think how beneficial a steam sauna can be for seniors.

Now think about what happens with seniors that are sedentary. Their lack of regular movement helps to increase the aches and pain and contributes to keeping their blood pressure high. A Mobile Medi Sauna Service will help to not only reduce their aches and pain but also aid in reducing their high blood pressure and lowering their cholesterol levels.

And here are other health benefits associated with a Medi Sauna program: stress reduction, better muscle movement, reduced anxiety, decreased

Regulating the nervous system: Acupuncture is thought to have an effect on the autonomic nervous system, which is responsible for the “fight or flight” response often triggered by anxiety. Acupuncture can reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and muscle tension.

Supporting sleep: Anxiety can often lead to sleep disturbances, which can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. Acupuncture has been shown to improve sleep quality and help regulate sleep patterns.

Complementing other treatments: Acupuncture can be a valuable adjunct therapy to other treatments for anxiety, such as medication, psychotherapy, and relaxation techniques. The combination of these treatments can enhance their overall effectiveness and provide a more comprehensive.

Reducing stress: Acupuncture has been shown to help reduce stress levels. By targeting specific acupuncture points related to stress regulation, practitioners can help to activate the body’s natural stress-relief mechanisms.

Improving mood: Acupuncture has been found to have a positive effect on mood. The treatment can help stimulate the release of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine.

Enhancing cognitive function: Anxiety can impair cognitive function, and acupuncture has been shown to help improve cognitive abilities, Please see “Reducing Anxiety,” page 60

muscular/joint disorders, increased white blood cell production, reduced muscle tension, blood detoxification, improved sleep and much, much more.

Aging in place, without unnecessary aches and pain, is what every senior hopes to experience. And this becomes possible when we learn what our body needs as we age to offset some of the health issues that crept upon us when we were young adults. Adding this ancient therapy to your healthcare regimen will help to gradually reduce the aches and pains experienced by your loved one but more importantly, it provides them a therapy that works to improve their quality of life as they age in place with you, at home.

Slow Yoga

For Nervous System Resilience

In the hustle and bustle of today’s fast-paced world, where stress and anxiety seem to be constants, finding moments of tranquility and resilience becomes essential for maintaining overall well-being. Amidst various techniques and practices, one age-old method stands out for its profound impact on both body and mind: slow (gentle) yoga. Rooted in ancient wisdom and modern science, slow yoga offers a sanctuary for cultivating nervous system resilience. Through deliberate breathwork, mindful move-

ments, and gentle postures, practitioners can harness the power of their own physiology to navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and grace.

You will learn:

• to manage your individual breathing rate to gain more energy.

• to slow your breathing to reduce pain and manage your emotions.

• to unlearn intrinsic, dysfunctional breathing patterns which can be related to dysfunctional emotional patterns.

• specific breathing in asanas (postures) can shift dysfunctional movement patterns and relieve stress and tension in the body.

• to use asanas to lengthen the breath and stretch the tissues to keep organs healthy.

• to down regulate your nervous system in order to better manage stressful situations.

• novel and fun contralateral movements that change the brain to bring you peace, calm and overall

such as memory, attention, and processing speed. By improving cognitive function, seniors may find it easier to cope with anxiety and manage their symptoms more effectively.

Alleviating physical symptoms: Anxiety can manifest as physical symptoms, such as headaches, muscle tension, and gastrointestinal issues. Acupuncture can help address these physical symptoms by targeting specific acupuncture points related to the affected body systems, which can provide relief and improve overall well-being.

It’s essential for seniors to work with a licensed acupuncturist experienced in treating anxiety and other mental health conditions. The practitioner should perform a thorough assessment of the individual’s needs and develop a personalized treatment plan to maximize the potential benefits of acupuncture for anxiety. It’s also crucial to maintain open communication with the acupuncturist and any other healthcare providers to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Nurturing Emotional Resilience in Children

A Guide For Parents

In today’s fast-paced world, children encounter various stressors that can affect their emotional well-being. As parents, it’s essential to equip our children with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges with resilience. Emotional resilience is a crucial skill that can help children thrive despite adversity. In this article, we’ll explore practical strategies parents can employ to foster emotional resilience in their children.

Understanding Emotional Resilience

Emotional resilience is the ability to adapt and bounce back from difficult situations. It involves developing coping mechanisms, maintaining a positive outlook, and building strong support networks. Children with higher levels of emotional resilience are better equipped to handle stress, manage their emotions, and overcome obstacles effectively.

Encouraging Emotional Expression

Create a safe and supportive environment where your child feels comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. Encourage open communication by actively listening to them without judgment. Let them know that it’s okay to experience a range of emotions and that you’re there to support them through both the good times and the tough ones.

Teaching Problem-Solving Skills

Acupuncture For Rhinitis and Asthma

Acupuncture, originating from ancient Chinese traditions, has garnered substantial attention in Western societies in recent decades. This practice entails delicately inserting fine needles into precise points on the body to stimulate healing responses and restore equilibrium. Over time, acupuncture has demonstrated effectiveness in addressing various ailments, notably rhinitis and asthma.

Rhinitis, a condition characterized by inflammation of nasal passages, manifests through symptoms like conges-

tion, runny nose, sneezing, and itchiness. This ailment encompasses two primary forms: allergic and non-allergic. Allergic rhinitis stems from immune reactions to allergens such as pollen, dust, or animal dander, while non-allergic rhinitis can arise from irritants like smoke, pollution, or strong odors.

Asthma, a chronic respiratory disorder, involves inflammation and constriction of airways, leading to breathing difficulties. Its symptoms encompass coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness, triggered by various factors including allergies, physical activity, cold air, or stress.

Acupuncture’s efficacy in treating both rhinitis and asthma has been established through research. Traditional Chinese medicine attributes these conditions to imbalances in the body’s energy or “qi,” which acupuncture addresses by stimulating specific points to restore balance and facilitate healing.

medical history and current medications of aging patients.

Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)

Dry mouth affects approximately 30% of patients over 65 years old, with this number increasing to 40% among those over 80 years old. This condition can be triggered by more than 400 commonly prescribed medications and can lead to mucositis, cavities, cracked lips, and a fissured tongue. To combat this, it is recommended to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day while limiting alcohol and sugary or caffeinated beverages such as juices, sodas, and coffee.

Dental Insurance Coverage

Surprisingly, half of seniors neglect to visit a dentist, with cost being the primary deterrent. Shockingly, around 70% of seniors lack dental

Hinsurance. Traditional Medicare does not cover routine dental care, and even Medicare Part A offers limited coverage for “medically necessary” dental benefits. Medicare Advantage plans with dental coverage often provide minimal benefits.

Tips For Maintaining and Enhancing Oral Health

• Brush your teeth twice a day using a soft-bristle toothbrush. An electric toothbrush may be advantageous for those with limited mobility.

• Floss daily to clean between your teeth.

• If you wear dentures or partials, remember to clean them daily.

• Opt for tap water, which contains fluoride to help prevent tooth decay.

• Regularly visit a dentist for checkups and dental care.

is often focused on controlling the symptoms. Since the most common symptoms are related to acid reflux then treatment is often aimed at reducing episodes of acid reflux.

General measures involve eliminating any predisposing factors, avoiding spicy foods and other foods that contribute to acid reflux, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, avoiding large meals especially before going to bed, and sleeping with the head propped up on multiple pillows.

Medications used to control acid production in the stomach can manage the symptoms for many patients. Many of these medications are available over the counter while some re-

natural hormonal status and balance of a man or woman is optimized to allow for health and well being in the safest possible way using the lowest effective dose.

The majority of menopause symptoms are due to estrogen deficiency. Treating these symptoms with safe and effective doses of estrogen, progesterone, and in some cases testosterone, can make a big difference in how a woman navigates menopause. Positive results include improvement in sleep, decrease in hot flashes and night sweats, heightened libido and sexual pleasure, and a greater sense of well-being.

Low testosterone levels are fairly common as men enter into their 50s and beyond. This is not just about sexual performance. Men who have low testosterone levels are at a higher risk of dying from many causes than

protEct your Back

Employ Assistive Equipment:

When confronted with particularly heavy or bulky items, contemplate utilizing assistive equipment to mitigate strain on your back. Devices such as dollies, hand trucks, or lifting straps can notably diminish the pressure on your spine and distribute weight more evenly. Whenever feasible, enlist assistance from others to share the lifting burden, particularly for objects surpassing your physical capabilities.

Take Periodic Breaks and Avoid Excessive Strain: Lifting tasks can exact a physical toll, underscoring the importance of pacing oneself

and evading undue strain. If engaged in prolonged lifting activities, intersperse regular breaks for rest and recuperation. Tune into your body’s cues and heed any indications of fatigue or discomfort. Exceeding your limits could precipitate injuries. It’s prudent to take brief respites and execute the task safely rather than risking potential long-term harm to your back.

Emphasizing the safety of your back during lifting endeavors is pivotal in preventing injuries. By incorporating these guidelines, you can safeguard your back and sustain a healthy, pain-free lifestyle.

Surgery is generally reserved for patients that have persistent symptoms unresponsive to general measures or medications. Surgery is aimed at taking the stomach out of the chest cavity and returning the stomach to its natural position in the abdominal cavity. The opening in the diaphragm that allowed the hernia to occur is closed to prevent the stomach from going back into the chest cavity. The stomach is frequently wrapped around the esophagus to help manage symptoms.

are men with normal levels of testosterone. Symptoms and signs of low testosterone are fatigue, loss of muscle mass, low libido, elevated cholesterol. Low testosterone contributes to the development of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. By replacing testosterone to optimal levels a man can experience heightened vitality and well-being.

Another common hormonal issue is hypothyroidism, which is often underdiagnosed and can leave people feeling unwell and sluggish. Like the other issues discussed in this article, not addressing hypothyroidism can make other health issues persist, including sleep problems, fatigue, and ability to function well in life.

If any of the above resonates with you, engage with a physician knowledgeable in addressing these important issues of health.

Here are five tips for keeping your child safe before heading to the pool this summer, as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children younger than five in the United States:

• Swim lessons. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) supports swimming lessons for most children four years and older. The decision to enroll your child in swimming lessons should be based on the child’s developmental readiness.

• Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as “floaties.”

• Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult (preferably one who knows how to swim and perform CPR) should be within arm’s length, providing “touch supervision.”

• Remove all toys from the pool after use so children aren’t tempted to reach for them.

for such options, podiatric surgery may become necessary to relieve pressure and repair the toe joint.

Surgical Options

Several surgical procedures are available. Surgery removes the bony enlargement, restores normal alignment of the joint, and relieves pain.

A simple bunionectomy, in which only the bony prominence is removed, may be used for the less severe deformity. Severe bunions may require a more involved procedure, which includes cutting the bone and realigning the joint.

surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

First, either local or general anesthesia will be administered.

Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

Next, they will insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely,

they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia.

Schedule a consultation with an All-On-Four provider. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

by a compression fracture(s).

During kyphoplasty a small incision is made in the back through which the doctor places a narrow tube. Using fluoroscopy to guide the tube to the correct position, a path is created through the back into the fracture area through the pedicle of the involved vertebrae.

Using fluoroscopy images, the doctor inserts a special balloon through the tube and into the vertebrae and then gently inflates this balloon. As the balloon inflates it elevates the compression of the vertebra and creates a cavity inside the vertebrae, which is filled with a cementlike material called polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). used to alleviate allergy symptoms. Butterbur, for example, is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that can ease nasal congestion and sneezing. Similarly, stinging nettle has been shown to relieve allergy symptoms by inhibiting the release of histamines.

Acupuncture: This ancient Chinese practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to restore balance and promote healing. Some studies suggest that acupuncture may help alleviate allergy symptoms by modulating the immune response and reducing inflammation.

Probiotics: The balance of gut bacteria plays a crucial role in immune function, and probiotics can help maintain a healthy microbial environment. Research indicates that probiotic supplements may reduce the severity of allergy symptoms by modulating the immune system’s response to allergens.

Nasal Irrigation: Saline nasal irrigation, using a neti pot or saline spray, can help flush out allergens and mucus from the nasal passages, providing relief from congestion and irritation. This

The procedure takes about one hour for each vertebra involved. Patients will be observed closely in the recovery room immediately following the kyphoplasty procedure for about 1-3 hours. Patients should not drive until they are given approval by their doctor.

Risks and Side Effects

simple yet effective technique can be safely used in children with allergies.

Holistic Care and Allergy Prevention

In addition to addressing allergy symptoms, holistic approaches focus on strengthening the body’s natural defenses and reducing overall allergic reactivity. Encouraging outdoor play during times of low pollen counts, practicing mindfulness and stress-reducing activities, and ensuring adequate hydration are all integral components of holistic allergy care for children.

Spring allergies need not dampen a child’s enthusiasm for the season’s delights. By exploring holistic options for allergy relief and prevention, parents can empower their children to enjoy the wonders of springtime while fostering overall health and well-being. Whether through dietary modifications, herbal remedies, or mind-body practices, holistic approaches offer natural and effective alternatives for managing spring allergies in children, allowing them to thrive amidst the blooming beauty of the season.

journals such as Allergy and the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine have highlighted acupuncture’s effectiveness in alleviating symptoms of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis. Participants receiving acupuncture reported significant improvements in nasal congestion, runny nose, and itchiness compared to sham treatments.

Similarly, research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology underscores acupuncture’s positive impact on asthma management. Participants receiving acupuncture experienced notable reductions in symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and breathlessness, alongside improvements in lung function.

Hor flooding, have visible or suspected mold growth, or simply want peace of mind regarding the air quality of your home, air sampling by an environmental professional is highly recommended.

Environmental testing is also recommended if you are moving into a new space. This will help determine what the previous tenants left behind, such as allergens or bacteria, as well as help determining how safe the building is for occupancy.

Beyond its therapeutic benefits, acupuncture offers a safe and non-invasive alternative for managing rhinitis and asthma. Unlike medications that may entail side effects or prove ineffective for some individuals, acupuncture boasts minimal adverse effects and can be tailored to each patient’s unique requirements.

Acupuncture emerges as a viable and secure treatment avenue for addressing rhinitis and asthma. If you’re grappling with these conditions and seek a natural, non-invasive solution, acupuncture presents a promising option. It’s advisable to consult with a licensed acupuncturist to explore whether acupuncture aligns with your needs and preferences.

facet joints are the source of the pain, paving the way for further treatment.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Radiofrequency ablation is a highly effective and minimally invasive procedure used to provide long-term pain relief for facet arthropathy. Once the source of the pain is confirmed through medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation can be performed.

During RFA, a specialized needle is inserted near the affected medial branch nerves under fluoroscopic guidance. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered through the needle, heating the nerve tissue and disrupting its ability to transmit pain signals. This procedure provides long-lasting pain relief, often lasting six months to a year or more, allowing patients to experience significant improvements

o

in their quality of life.

At our pain clinic, we specialize in providing innovative and effective solutions for lower back arthritis, including medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablation. Our team of experienced pain management specialists is dedicated to helping you find relief from facet arthropathy, allowing you to reclaim your life from chronic pain.

If you’re tired of living with lower back arthritis and are seeking a lasting solution, contact your doctor to schedule a consultation. A personalized approach to pain management ensures that you receive the care and attention you deserve, helping you achieve optimal outcomes and improved quality of life.

Don’t let lower back arthritis hold you back any longer – take the first step towards pain-free living with our comprehensive treatment options.

stEoporosis

• Smoking is linked to bone loss.

• Calcium helps build and maintain healthy bone mass, and your body needs vitamin D to be able to use the calcium in your diet.

• Alcohol intake can reduce the amounts of calcium and vitamin D in your body.

• People who are confined to bed or who must wear a cast for a long time lose bone mass from lack of use. The same is true for people who do not get enough exercise in their daily lives.

Osteoporosis Is Preventable

Whether your risk of osteoporosis is high or low, lifestyle changes to prevent the disease are good for everyone.

• Eat foods that are high in calcium. Milk and other dairy products, calcium-fortified fruit juice, dark green leafy vegetables, almonds, and salmon are all good sources of calcium.

• Eat foods that help your body absorb the calcium in your diet. Fortified milk and fatty fish are good sources of vitamin D, which your body needs to be able to absorb calcium.

wellbeing.

Slow yoga isn’t just about physical flexibility; it’s a holistic journey towards inner resilience and profound self-awareness. By mastering the art of slowing down, syncing breath with movement, and embracing stillness, individuals can recalibrate their nervous systems, cultivate emotional balance, and thrive in the face of ad-

in decision-making processes and encouraging them to find solutions to their challenges. Break down problems into smaller, more manageable steps, and guide them through brainstorming possible solutions. Encourage creativity and flexibility in their problem-solving approach.

Promoting Healthy Coping Mechanisms

Teach your child healthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress and adversity. Encourage activities such as exercise, mindfulness, and creative expression, which can help reduce anxiety and improve mood. Model positive coping strategies yourself, demonstrating how to manage stress in healthy ways.

Building Resilient Relationships

From pagE 52

• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about taking a calcium supplement. The NIH recommend these levels of calcium intake:

• 1,000 milligrams per day for 25-49-year-old premenopausal women and for 50-64-year-old postmenopausal women who take estrogen.

• 1,500 milligrams per day for 50-64 year-old postmenopausal women not taking estrogen and for all men and women over age 65.

• Make sure you get 30-60 minutes of weight-bearing exercise each week. Talk to your doctor before you begin any exercise program.

• Just 10-15 minutes of sunshine 2-3 times a week provides all the vitamin D needed.

Medications To Prevent and Treat Osteoporosis

Getting exercise and taking calcium and vitamin D are the first steps in osteoporosis prevention. For some people, a medication also may be necessary to help prevent fractures. Your doctor will prescribe the medication.

versity. So, whether you’re seeking relief from chronic stress, pain management, or simply a deeper connection to your body and mind, slow, gentle yoga beckons with its promise of peace, calm, and enduring wellbeing. Embark on this transformative practice, and let it be your steadfast companion on the journey to a more resilient, vibrant life.

Help your child build strong relationships with family members, friends, teachers, and other supportive adults. These connections can provide

a sense of security and belonging, offering valuable support during challenging times. Encourage your child to reach out for help when needed and to offer support to others in return.

Encouraging Growth Mindset

Foster a growth mindset in your child by emphasizing the power of perseverance and effort. Teach them that mistakes are opportunities for learning and growth, rather than failures. Praise their efforts and resilience, rather than focusing solely on outcomes.

By implementing these strategies, parents can play a crucial role in nurturing emotional resilience in their children. By fostering open communication, teaching problem-solving skills, promoting healthy coping mechanisms, building resilient relationships, and encouraging a growth mindset, parents can empower their children to thrive in the face of life’s challenges.

Traditional or conventional braces treatment usually requires removal of healthy teeth, use of palatal expanders, and headgears to make space. This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer, and can leave narrower arches and a smile with a flattened profile.

Faces treated with self-ligation braces are fuller, with a wider natural smile and are achieved with lighter, “biologically-sensible forces” which are more in the lighter, physiologic force ranges of “natural tooth” movement or drift. Teeth tend to drift out of position over a period of time without our sensing or feeling the movement until it is causing dental problems.

• No text messaging or e-mail while driving.

• No drinking and driving. With the legalization of certain amounts of marijuana, you must stress the importance of not allowing anyone in the vehicle to use the drug.

• Limit the number of passengers in the car when your teen is driving to limit distractions. Statistics show teen drivers with teen or young adult passengers increase the risk of accidents. This risk increases with each additional teen or young adult passenger.

• Demand that your teen and all passengers in the car use seatbelts.

• Since most accidents happen after dark and on weekends, limit your teen’s driving during these times.

From pagE 48

Self-ligating braces are considered state-of the-art treatment.

For example, from my experience, treatment with Damon selfligating brackets can be 4-6 months or 20% shorter in time, require fewer appointments, are more comfortable, hygienic and esthetic because it is a smaller bracket.

Variations in bracket designs and materials (metal or clear) distinguish brackets from each other, however, proper diagnosis, treatment planning and excellent clinical skills are still important in producing extraordinary results with beautiful smiles and faces.

From pagE 52

• Always adhere to applicable speed limits and decrease speed during inclement weather.

• Explain the dangers of black ice.

• Never get into a vehicle with another teen that has been drinking or taking drugs.

The attorneys at Alexander & Cleaver have been representing people injured in car accidents for over 45 years. Increasingly, we are representing individuals who are injured in accidents caused by inexperienced teen drivers who are distracted while driving, or under the influence of alcohol. To make this a happy and safe spring and summer, please have a meaningful conversation with your teen drivers about the importance of safe driving.

time. If the clothes require washing first, hot water is best as cold and medium temperature water will not kill ticks.

Examine your gear and pets. Ticks ride into the home on clothing and pets.

Shower soon after being outdoors. Showering within two hours of coming indoors is shown to reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease and may be effective in reducing the risk of other tick-borne diseases.

Conduct a full body check. Use a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body. Check these parts of your body and your child’s body for ticks: Under the arms, in and around the ears, inside belly button, back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs and around your waist.

How Do I Prevent Ticks From Getting On My Pet?

and love yourself for who you are. Imagine what life would be like for you. Imagine, think about, daydream, and even pretend that you are the you that you want to be (not what others think you should be). Imagine, daydream, and even go into a trance about the new possibilities for the year 2024, a year of possibilities.

How to become a new you... Decide who you are and what you want in your new life. Look around; what do you see? Are you headed in the direction of your chosen path? Decide to take the path that leads you into you. Make a conscious decision to become healthier, happier, and more aware. Ask yourself... what makes you happier, healthier, and what do you need

It is suggested that you use a tick preventive product on your dog. Cats are extremely sensitive to a variety of chemicals. Do not apply any tick prevention products to your cats without first asking your veterinarian.

How Do I Prevent Ticks In My Yard?

Clear tall grasses and brush around homes and at the edge of lawns. Place a three foot wide barrier of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas and around patios and play equipment. This will restrict tick migration into recreational areas.

Mow the lawn frequently and keep leaves raked. Stack wood neatly and in a dry area (discourages rodents that ticks feed on). Keep playground equipment, decks, and patios away from yard edges and trees and place them in a sunny location, if possible.

From pagE 54

to do to help you reach your goals? Find your path and then follow the steps to a new you. How to become a new you.... Meditate or just reflect consciously in a quiet place... Focus on your breathing... Listen to your soul.... Ask the Universe to reveal to you what you need for you... Thank the Universe and go on as if it is happening as if the flowers and seeds you planted are budding, sprouting, and growing into you because it is.

Remember that you become what you think about you; you become the seeds (bij) you planted. Therefore, think about what you want, not what you don’t want. You manifest yourself through thinking and believing; your thoughts are the fruits of your seeds.

Our Care for You Is More Than Skin Deep…

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and, together with your hair and nails, the mirror of everything that’s happening internally. After over twenty years as a fellowship-trained, Board Certified dermatologist and as a cosmetic surgeon, I am completely convinced of the positive effects of integrating medical and cosmetic treatments to balance how you look with how you feel. When that balance is missing or has been lost with age, how we look doesn’t represent who we really are inside. Others may assume that an older, stressed or worried appearance means a lack of ideas, energy and creativity. This impacts us both personally and professionally. The greatest joy of my profession is restoring the inner-outer balance for the women and men who consult me. They find it an exhilarating experience to look in the mirror, and love the reflection that’s looking back.

My team and I offer you breakthrough technology, advanced science and true artistry in a warm, compassionate and emotionally intelligent environment. We stay on the cutting edge, serving as national research and training centers - in many cases, the only centers in the mid-Atlantic and East - for expert treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions and state of-the-art techniques including lasers, fillers, Botox, fat grafting, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), chemical peels, liposuction and body contouring and vaginal rejuvenation.

My mission in my North American and global research is to elucidate the scientific basis of new and emerging technologies, and how this science can be applied to achieve the best and safest procedural outcomes. As a Principal Investigator for studies of new technologies, a national and international teacher of dermatologists and plastic surgeons, and one of a handful of experts serving as an advisor and director of advanced medical education programs, I’m confident that you will achieve the best possible results when you entrust your face and body to our hands. As a daily practitioner of yoga, I understand the value of a holistic approach. Above all, my team and I promise to give you straight answers. We’ll steer you through the hype and jargon, and help you restore the inner-outer balance that empowers us in every aspect of our lives.
