Wrinkles may come with age, but so does wisdom. Whether your eye
lids are carrying excess skin, or your wrinkles have taken over your forehead, or your smile is outlined with parentheses, there are a number of procedures available to improve your look and feel.
Consult with your doctor to determine what products and procedures are best for the look you want to achieve. Such procedures can be surgical and non-surgical.

As we age, the delicate skin around the eyes can appear puffy or saggy. Eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken, and the normal deposits of protective fat around the eye bulge.
The surgical procedure to remove excess eyelid tissues (skin, muscle, or fat) is called blepharoplasty. Ophthalmologists are trained to perform this procedure during their medical residency.
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. The surgery is performed for either cosmetic or functional reasons. Sometimes excess upper eyelid tissue obstructs the upper visual field or can weigh down the eyelid and produce tired-feeling eyes. Most often, people choose blepharoplasty to improve their appearance by making the area around their eyes firmer. When blepharoplasty is performed to improve vision, rather than for cosmetic reasons only, it may be covered by insurance.
Botox and Xeomin
Did you know that ophthalmologists have been using botulinum toxin (Botox) since its experimental trials began in Florida in 1986? In 1989 the FDA approval signaled the use of botulinum toxin as a safe and effective treatment for use in the eyelids, eyebrows, and facial muscles for certain medical conditions. Ophthalmologists actually discovered its wrinkle reducing effects.
Both products are non-surgical FDA approved treatments that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown lines in the forehead, between the brows, and the “crow’s feet” on the side of the eyes in men and women ages 18 to 65.
Radiesse, Juvederm (Voluma & XC), Belotero
We live in exciting times when it comes to the science of beauty. Injectable fillers can replace the lost collagen and volume, giving us the full cheeks and firm skin of youth.
That’s something all those expensive creams, lotions, and serums just can’t deliver. In fact, it was ophthalmologists that discovered and reported one side effect of Lumigan – it increased eye lash length, while also darkening and thickening.

Jacqueline D. Griffiths M.D. earned her undergraduate degree at Yale and her medical degree from the University of Michigan. Her Ophthalmology residency was completed at Georgetown University Medical Center.
Dr. Griffiths has been in private practice since 1994. She started her own practice and laser center, NewView Laser EyeTM in 1999 where she serves as the Medical Director. NewView’s Mission is to provide Excellence in Ophthalmologic services by giving personalized attention to every patient.
Dr. Griffiths is Board Certified and began performing laser vision correction practically from its inception in this country. She has performed thousands of cases and participated with the CRS-USA LASIK trials to get the LASIK procedure approved by the FDA.
In addition to offering Custom LASIK and PRK, NewView offers Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery, Multifocal IOLs, annual eye exams, glaucoma and diabetic screening exams, and cosmetic services including Botox, Restylane, Radiesse, Juvederm, and eyelid surgery. NewView Optical offers affordable high quality frames and lenses for the entire family (ages 5 and older).
Dr. Griffiths is the former Ophthalmology Section Chief of Reston Hospital Department of Surgery, the former Chief of Ophthalmology for the Reston Ambulatory Surgical Center in Reston, VA as well as Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg, VA, Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Washington National Eye Center and others.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

A bright, aligned smile is more than a cosmetic goal — it’s a key to better oral health, enhanced self-esteem, and an improved quality of life. Thanks to advances in orthodontics, more people are discovering that it’s never too late to invest in a confident smile.
Why Orthodontics Matters –Beyond Aesthetics
While straightening crooked teeth is often what first comes to mind, orthodontic treatment offers deeper health advantages. Misaligned teeth and bites can trap food and plaque in hard-to-reach areas, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. An improper bite can also place undue stress on certain teeth, accelerating wear and tear, or contribute to jaw discomfort and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.
By aligning teeth and jaws properly, orthodontics helps distribute bite forces evenly, making chewing more efficient and reducing long-term damage. Moreover, mounting evidence links oral health with overall health — chronic gum disease can elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes complications, and other conditions. Correcting orthodontic issues supports not only a healthier mouth but potentially a healthier body as well.
Orthodontics For Adults: It Really Works
A common misconception is that orthodontics is only for children and teens. In truth, healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age because the biological processes of bone remodeling continue throughout life. While adult bone turnover is slower than in youth, modern treatment strategies, patient compliance, and improved appliance options make treatment highly effective for adults.
Today, about one in three orthodontic patients is an adult. Many adults also favor discreet treatment options — clear aligners, ceramic brackets, or lingual braces — that fit into professional and social lives without drawing attention.
Mental Health and Confidence Gains
The benefits of orthodontic treatment
extend beyond oral health and into mental well-being. Studies show that orthodontic treatment is associated with improved self-image, reduced anxiety about dental appearance, and greater confidence. A straighter smile can boost self-esteem in social interactions, professional settings, and personal relationships — transforming not just your teeth but your outlook on life.
What To Expect:
The Path To a Confident Smile
• Consultation & Planning. Your
orthodontist examines your teeth and jaws using X-rays, photos, and digital scans to create a personalized treatment plan.
• Active Treatment. You’ll wear braces, aligners, or other appliances for a period that typically ranges from 12 to 24 months, depending on complexity.
• Retention. After your teeth are aligned, retainers help maintain their new positions.
• Maintenance. Good oral hygiene,
regular dental checkups, and retainer use ensure lasting results.
Orthodontics is a powerful tool that can reshape more than your smile — it can reshape your confidence, health, and self-image. Whether you’re a teen, in your midlife, or beyond, modern techniques make it possible to achieve a radiant, healthy smile. A confident smile is a step toward a confident life — and with the right care, it’s never too late to take that step.

For individuals who have lost most or all of their teeth, the thought of lengthy, multiple-stage implant procedures can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, advances in implant dentistry now make it possible to restore a full, confident smile—often
in just one visit. Known as sameday dental implants or full mouth reconstruction with immediate denture delivery, this modern approach allows patients to walk out with a beautiful, functional set of teeth the very same day.
Same-day implant systems combine surgical precision with state-of-the-art digital planning.

Using 3D imaging and computerguided design, the dentist creates a detailed surgical map of the patient’s mouth. This technology ensures that each implant post is positioned with the utmost accuracy for long-term stability and comfort. Once the implants are placed, a custom-designed temporary denture is secured immediately, providing both function and

aesthetics right away.
At Burke Dental, we believe great dentistry goes beyond healthy teeth — it’s about trust, comfort, and confidence in your care. Here’s why families across Burke, Fairfax, and Springfield, VA choose Dr. Farzin Ghanavati and his team for their dental needs:
Top-Rated Dentist in Burke, VA – Hundreds of 5-star reviews from happy patients reflect our commitment to excellence, honesty, and gentle care.

Personalized, Honest Care – No pressure, no upselling — just clear communication, customized treatment, and genuine concern for your oral health.
Comfortable, Modern Environment – Relax in our clean, high-tech office designed for your comfort and peace of mind.

Traditional full mouth implant procedures typically require several surgeries and healing phases, stretching over months. With sameday implants, patients can avoid multiple visits, temporary toothlessness, and extended recovery periods. The process is less invasive, resulting in less post-operative swelling, discomfort, and downtime. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how natural their new smile feels and how quickly they can return to normal activities.
These advanced implant systems are designed to restore not only the look of natural teeth but also the ability to chew, speak, and smile with confidence. The results are both immediate and life-changing—allowing patients to enjoy meals, socialize, and even take photos without hesitation. In short, same-day implants make it possible to regain oral health and self-confidence without months of waiting.
Considering Full Mouth Reconstruction?
If you have missing or damaged teeth and want to explore a faster, more comfortable path to restoration, talk to a qualified implant dentist about same-day implant options. A thorough evaluation will determine whether this approach is right for you. With today’s technology, your new smile could be just one appointment away.

Your smile is more than just teeth — it’s how you greet the world. Whether you’re tired of covering your mouth in photos, hiding stained or crooked teeth, or feeling discomfort when you chew, Smiles International can help you take back your confidence and restore a radiant, youthful smile.

Hair loss can be a very emotional experience. In addition to the stress of hair loss, for females, many feel they are suffering through hair loss alone.
For many women losing their hair can be shocking, embarrassing and distressing. The emotional strain of hair loss can be unhealthy, not to mention traumatic in one’s day-to-day life.
According to the American Association of Dermatology (AAD), hair loss for women is common.
The facts:
• 30 million American women are affected by hereditary hair loss.
• Women actually make up 40% of American hair loss sufferers.
• In quality-of-life studies, women experiencing hair loss reported a higher incidence of behavior that interfered with their daily lives including a significant loss of selfesteem, being introverted, feeling less attractive and tense feelings in public places.
• The average person loses 50 to 100 hairs per day.
“The reality is, women suffering from hair loss are not alone and do not need to suffer in silence any longer.”
The reality is, women suffering from hair loss are not alone and do not need to suffer in silence any longer. The advanced NeoGraft® technology has allowed skilled physicians to conduct follicular unit extraction (FUE) with an advanced automated system that ensures precision, consistency and natural looking results.
The NeoGraft procedure is a discrete, minimally-invasive hair restoration solution. There is no linear scaring which allows patients the flexibility of any hair style, short or long.
On average, recovery times are
quick and there are few activity restrictions following the procedure. A certified NeoGraft provider will be able to assess your specific needs in your initial consultation and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
How the Procedure Works:
Step One: Donor Hair Removal. The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed
to resist testosterone.
Step Two: Separation Of the Follicular Units. Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate.
Step Three: Creation Of the Recipient Sites. Recipient sites are then created in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan designed specifically for you.
Step Four: Placement Of the Hair Graft. The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. G rafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results. So, if you are losing, or have lost, hair and want a great solution to replace it or thicken your hair, now is the time to look into NeoGraft.

Virginia Hair Transplant is excited to announce our newest offering, NeoGraft®. NeoGraft® introduces the “state-of-the-art” solution for hair loss. This game changing technology automates the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to give patients more natural looking results with minimal downtime, no linear scarring and no stitches.
• It is the least invasive procedure for hair transplantation
• Patients who receive NeoGraft® feel little to no discomfort
• No stitches or staples are used in the NeoGraft® procedure
• No unsightly linear scar
• No numbness where the donor hair is harvested
• Quick recovery time
• Natural looking results
• Less restrictions on your normal daily activities
• Patients can typically go back to work the next day
• Flexibility for any hair style of your choice, short or long

A healthy airway is essential to a child’s growth, development, and dental health. When breathing patterns are disrupted—especially by chronic mouth breathing—the effects extend far beyond snoring or poor sleep. They can influence how a child’s face develops, how teeth align, and even their risk for tooth decay.
How Mouth Breathing Affects Oral Health
Mouth breathing occurs when a child cannot breathe comfortably through the nose, often due to allergies, enlarged tonsils or adenoids, or structural nasal issues. Constant airflow through the mouth dries out protective saliva, allowing harmful bacteria to thrive. This environment increases the risk of cavities and gum inflammation, as saliva’s natural ability to wash away food particles and
neutralize acids is reduced.
Children who habitually breathe through their mouths may also have bad breath, dry lips, and more frequent sore throats—all early signs that something may be wrong with the airway.
The Link Between Airway and Facial Growth
Chronic mouth breathing doesn’t just affect the teeth—it can reshape

a child’s face. When a child’s mouth remains open during growth years, the tongue sits low instead of resting against the roof of the mouth, where it normally helps widen the palate and guide jaw development. The result can be a narrow upper jaw, crowding of teeth, an elongated face, and even an underdeveloped chin. These structural changes can lead to bite problems and, later in life, may contribute to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discomfort or obstructive sleep apnea.
The Role Of Pediatric Airway Assessment
Early airway assessment by a pediatric dentist or ENT specialist can prevent long-term complications. Through a combination of visual evaluation, patient history, and sometimes imaging, professionals can identify signs of restricted nasal breathing or airway collapse. Addressing the root cause—whether through allergy management, orthodontic expansion, or referral to a specialist—can restore proper breathing and promote balanced growth.
with kids (even the anxious ones!), we’re
smile at a time.
For growing children, intervention at the right time can mean the difference between needing extensive orthodontic work later or maintaining a naturally aligned, healthy smile.
Supporting Healthy Development
Parents can watch for early warning signs such as snoring, restless sleep, chronic congestion, daytime fatigue, or the habit of sleeping with the mouth open. If these are present, an airway evaluation is a simple but powerful step toward improving overall health.
Proper breathing fuels healthy sleep, supports immune function, and helps children grow strong and confident. By identifying and addressing airway issues early, pediatric dentists and healthcare providers can protect not only a child’s smile—but their entire well-being.

Holistic care looks at the whole person—body, mind, and environment—rather than isolated symptoms. For many women, this approach is especially useful because hormonal shifts, stress, sleep, nutrition, gut health, and inflammation often interact in ways that standard symptomby-symptom care can miss. Here’s how a thoughtful, evidence-informed holistic plan typically comes together.
Start with a root-cause lens. Instead of asking only “What will relieve this symptom?”, holistic care asks “Why is this happening now?”
Common contributors include nutrient gaps, chronic stress and high cortisol, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause/menopause transitions, gut dysbiosis, low-grade inflammation, and environmental triggers (e.g., allergens, irritants, or poor sleep hygiene). Clarifying root factors helps you target changes that last.
Use testing judiciously. Labs can be helpful when they change decisions or track progress. Depending on your history, a clinician may consider:
• Metabolic markers (fasting glucose/insulin, lipids, A1C)
• Thyroid panel (TSH, free T4/T3; sometimes antibodies)
• Iron studies and B-vitamins if fatigue is prominent
• Inflammatory markers (e.g., hs-CRP)
• Selective evaluation for food intolerances or celiac disease when warranted
Testing should complement— not replace—clinical history, physical exam, and lifestyle assessment.
Prioritize lifestyle and nutrition. Foundational habits move the needle more than any single supplement. Center meals on protein, colorful produce, fiber, and healthy fats; limit ultra-processed foods and added sugars to improve energy, weight regulation, and hormonal balance. Aim for 7–9 hours of consistent sleep, regular physical
activity that blends aerobic work with strength training, and daily stress-recovery practices (breathwork, walking outside, journaling, or mindfulness). Small, repeatable steps beat drastic overhauls.
Support hormone and gut balance. The gut and liver help process estrogens; fiber-rich foods (beans, vegetables, whole grains) and adequate hydration support healthy elimination. Strength training and a protein-forward diet help with midlife muscle maintenance and insulin sensitivity, which can reduce hot flashes and weight gain. For menstrual concerns, tracking cycles alongside mood, sleep, and nutrition often reveals patterns you can modify.
Be supplement-savvy. Supplements can fill gaps but should be targeted, safe, and time-limited. Common considerations include vitamin D (if low), magnesium glycinate for sleep or muscle tension, omega-3s for triglycerides and inflammation, and iron only when deficiency is confirmed. Quality, dose, drug–nutrient interactions, and your specific labs matter; more is not better.
Mind–body care is medical care. Stress chemistry affects blood sugar, thyroid conversion, gut motility, and sleep. Brief, daily practices (10 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or a quiet walk) mea-
surably shift the nervous system and can improve pain, digestion, and mood.
Build a personalized plan. Bring a clear health timeline, medication/supplement list, and your top three goals to appointments. Ask which lifestyle steps to start first, which labs are most useful, how progress will be measured, and when to follow up. Holistic women’s health is not about chasing every test or pill – it’s about aligning daily habits, targeted therapies, and thoughtful monitoring so you feel and stay well over time.

By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
When your Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs) are healthy and happy, you are too. This joint is perhaps one of the most important joints in the human body.
It allows us to eat, speak, laugh, yawn, and tends to be working all day
long. For this reason, it is more readily damaged than many other joints. Even if you are an athlete whose body is moving and exercising for most of the day, your jaw joints are moving as well. This can lend them to damage and this leads to inflammation that can affect your entire body. This does not include contact sports.
Because of the delegate nature of

the joints structure, the TMJs happen to be one of the most misunderstood joints in the human body. Most doctors would tell you that medical or dental school did mostly a cursory discussion of this very important joint. Yet when it is not working properly, it can wreak havoc with your entire body. This might seem far-fetched, but there are many cases in which a displaced TMJ disc can affect

other parts of the body not just typical headaches, jaw pain or neck pain. The pinched nerves or blood vessels can affect the knee, the shoulder, the hip, and even the arch of the foot. Our office has seen these cases on so many occasions that it is no longer any oddity when the patient reports running is an option again. The reason is because the TM joints are well supported.
When a person has a TMJ problem, it is absolutely critical to diagnose the problem with an MRI. Unfortunately, most radiologists would admit that they have little to no experience in reading an MRI of the jaw joints. This is why you must seek a dentist or MD who has the radiologist with the expertise to read the images from the MRI. Our radiologist at the imaging center has the ability to identify disc degeneration which is a critical component in deciding how to treat the person.
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”
- Susan

The next factor is something called ‘condylar angulation’ which means how the top of the jaw bones is angled relative to each other. The next diagnostic item needed is the CBCT x-ray. This is critical to diagnosis. With the MRI and the CBCT x-ray information, it becomes easier to identify the problems and treat them accordingly. This is the key to success: properly identify the displacement and prepare for proper treatment.
It is amazing when you see the progression of someone who has suffered from TMJ disorder for many years and now function with a smile once again. Our office has countless cases of people who went from being disabled to being back to work and feeling themselves again. The before and after photos that are done clearly show how the head is straighter, the neck is aligned, the eyes and face are brighter, and the person can now smile!
Their Gorgeous Smile is there because of the now Gorgeous Healthy TM Joints!

Many infants and toddlers are using thumb sucking as a method of self-comfort and self-consoling. As the child evolves thumb sucking may
be used for more advanced soothing needs from tiredness, sickness, fear, or even boredom.
What Are the Consequences?
The frequency and the force exerted during the behavior have the most impact on long-term damage. If your child is a vigorous or frequent thumb sucker you may need to curb the habit as early as age three or four.
This may cause a gap to develop between the upper and lower teeth called an open bite. This is not just a dental problem, but results in reshaping of the jaws as well. Once this open bite is formed a tongue thrust may occur, which will continue to alter the alignment of the teeth once thumb sucking has stopped.
The alteration of the tongue muscles can lead to problems mak-

ing speech sounds like “s” and “th”. Though these baby teeth will fall out, the permanent teeth will often follow the pathway of the jaw misalignment and may give an appearance of forwardly positioned or “buck” front teeth.
Provide motivation for your child to break the habit. Review subjects such as spreading germs, tooth position, speech and teasing from peers. Find a book or show where your child’s favorite or child friendly character talks about the habit.
A daily sticker chart, or positive reward system can also help. Set small goals at first due to your child’s habit frequency. Set a big reward for the 2-4 week mark that your child will be excited to work towards. Remember to give verbal praise several times a day. Over-the-counter products can be used as well, including bad tasting nail polish, plastic thumb devices, finger covers, gloves, ace bandages at the elbow to prevent arm bending, and an alternative comforting object such as a blanket or toy.
Attempt to determine if your child has a stressor or underlying anxiety. This will be a difficult process for your child if they are not ready. Inform all childcare providers and family members of your process so they can receive consistent reinforcement when they are not in your care.
If there is no success after prolonged intervention feel free to reach out to a pediatric dental office to discuss your child’s risk for altered tooth alignment and the possible need for an orthodontic appliance.

Dr. Toyer grew up as an “Army brat,” but resided many years in Bowie, Maryland. She attended the University of Virginia and received a degree in Biology and Bioethics in 2003. Dr. Toyer attended dental school at the University of Maryland and took part in the Pediatric Dentistry Clerkship program.

Healthy skin is more than a reflection of beauty—it’s an important part of overall health and comfort. As we age, skin naturally loses elasticity and moisture, becoming thinner and more fragile. Small changes in daily care can make a big difference in keeping the skin of older adults healthy, hydrated, and resilient.
Hydration Is the Foundation
Dehydration is one of the leading causes of dry, itchy, or flaky skin in seniors. Encourage regular fluid intake throughout the day, even if thirst is reduced. Water, herbal tea, and hydrating foods such as fruit and soup can help. Moisturizing immediately after bathing—while the skin is still slightly damp—helps seal in moisture and restore the skin’s natural barrier. Fragrance-free creams or ointments tend to work better than thin lotions.
Gentle Cleansing and Bathing
Hot water and harsh soaps strip natural oils from the skin, worsening dryness. Older adults should bathe with warm water using mild, pHbalanced cleansers designed for sensitive skin. Limiting baths or showers to every other day can also help prevent irritation. Caregivers can assist with bathing safely and ensure the bathroom environment is warm and

Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented—and when it’s detected early. Yet many women delay screenings or don’t realize the steps they can take right now to protect their long-term health. Understanding how cervical cancer develops, and how to lower your risk, can make all the difference.
Cervical cancer begins in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Most cases are caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus spread through intimate contact. While most HPV infections clear on their own, some strains can cause abnormal cell changes that, if left untreated, may progress to cervical cancer over time.
The good news is that cervical cancer is highly preventable. Regular Pap tests and HPV screenings allow doctors to detect changes in cervical cells long before they become cancerous. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), women between the ages of 21 and 65 should follow recommended screening guidelines, which may include Pap tests every three years, HPV testing every five years, or a combination of both depending on age and health history. In addition to screening, HPV vaccination remains a key strategy in preventing cervical
cancer. Healthcare providers should consistently advocate for HPV vaccination among eligible patients (men and women), emphasizing both its proven safety and its effectiveness. Preventing, detecting, and treating cervical cancer are essential elements of comprehensive reproductive healthcare.
Another powerful preventive tool is the HPV vaccine, which is most effective when given before exposure to the virus but can benefit women (and men) well into adulthood. By protecting against the high-risk strains of HPV, the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer may not cause symptoms in its early stages, which is why screenings are so important. As the disease progresses, some women may experience:
• Unusual vaginal bleeding (between periods, after sex, or after menopause)
• Pelvic pain or discomfort
• Pain during intercourse
• Unusual vaginal discharge
If you notice any of these symptoms, don’t delay—schedule an appointment with your gynecologist.
Cervical cancer doesn’t wait, but the earlier it’s caught, the greater the chance for successful treatment. Regular checkups, routine screenings, and open conversations with your healthcare provider are key steps in protecting yourself.
Your health is worth prioritizing. Talk to your doctor about your risk factors, ask whether the HPV vaccine is right for you, and stay on schedule with your Pap and HPV screenings. A few proactive steps today can help safeguard your health for years to come.

Your saliva holds valuable information about what is happening inside your mouth. Dentists use advanced saliva testing through Bristle and OralDNA to detect hidden oral health issues before they become serious. This science-based approach allows us to provide more personalized care and improve outcomes for your oral and overall health.
Why Saliva Testing Matters
A traditional dental exam gives important insights, but it cannot always reveal which bacteria are contributing to gum disease, decay, or inflammation. Saliva testing gives us a deeper look. It identifies the types and levels of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms present in your mouth, helping your dentist understand what is driving disease.
Bristle analyzes the full oral microbiome, identifying both beneficial and harmful bacteria that influence your oral and systemic health. OralDNA focuses on detecting bacterial species linked to periodontal disease and inflammation. Together, these tools help us move from treating symptoms to identifying and addressing root causes.
How It Works
Saliva testing is simple and completely noninvasive. You provide a small saliva sample, which is analyzed in a specialized lab. The lab identifies

You can’t grow new teeth, but dental implants offer the next best thing if you’ve lost a tooth. A dental implant looks like a tiny screw and replaces the roots of a tooth. During a minor surgical procedure, your dentist creates a small opening in your jawbone and places the implant inside. Over the course of several months, the implant fuses to the bone, providing a secure foundation for the crown that will be placed on top of it. In some cases, you may receive a temporary crown the same day you receive your implant.
you have more than one tooth missing, implants provide an ideal replacement mechanism. You don’t even need one implant for every missing tooth. Instead, implant teeth can act as supports for fixed bridgework. For example, if you are missing three teeth in a row, we can place two implants, one on either side of the gap, and a crown in between that has no implant underneath. That way, you won’t need to use any of your remaining natural teeth as bridge supports, which could weaken them and make them more susceptible to decay.
Replace All Teeth Permanently – Implants can support an entire arch of upper or lower replacement teeth that are fixed into the mouth and are never removed. Sometimes the new teeth can be supported by as few as four implants. It’s comparable to the structure of a table, which only needs four legs to hold it up. In cases where jawbone density and volume have deteriorated, five or six implants might be needed to support a row of 10-12 teeth. Dental implant replacement teeth protect your jawbone, won’t slip, and should last a lifetime.
Aren’t Implants Expensive? –Please see “Dental Implants,” page 39

At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. If you are considering or were considering dental implants, you may be interested in what I have to say.
Some of you may have been told that you will need bone or sinus grafting and find the time or expense required unacceptable. Rest assured there are other alternatives to expensive and extensive bone and sinus grafting, such as blade dental implants.
Some of you may have been told that you will need bone or sinus grafting and find the time or expense required unacceptable.
I testified along with Dr. Ralph A. Roberts of Rio Dell, CA, before the Dental Products Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee for the United States Food and Drug Administration, Docket No. FDA2012-N-0677, Blade Endosseous Dental Implants.
The committee deliberated, voted and reclassified the blade form dental implants from a Class III to a Class II medical device. This means that blade forms are in the same classification as root form dental implants.
The blade form implants take advantage of horizontal bone in thin and shallow jaws, where as the root form requires sufficient vertical height and width of bone, thus there very well may be no need for bone grafting
with the associated time, expense and discomfort.
A ramus blade implant that is used to rehabilitate the lower jaw with the implant and a fixed bridge.
The bridge is cemented to the ramus blade implant and forward teeth or implant and does not come out.
This is a tremendous dental rescue for those that are wearing and suffering from lower partial dentures.

1. Even in cases having only a few front teeth, the lower arch can be completely retrained by utilizing implants.
2. This implant is designed to fit into the dense base of the mandible, and will provide a strong, stable abutment for your bridge.
3. Fixed bridgework will be connected to your teeth and the post of the implant.
4. The tissue will form a cuff around the implanted part, like that of normal dentitions. Your usual dental care is all that is required to maintain healthy oral hygiene.
1. Have You Lost One or More of Your Teeth?
2. Are You Embarrassed by Your Smile or Missing Teeth?
3. Are You Tired of the Daily Hassles of Denture Wear?
4. Do You Have Bone Loss Where Teeth Were Pulled?
5. Do You Have Pain of Discomfort When Chewing?
Dental Implants Replace Missing Teeth for Young and Old. Nearly Everyone Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants AND There are Hardly Any Medical Problems and Prevent You from Having Dental Implant Treatments.

The Dental Spa concept was written about on the front page of the Business section of the Washington Post in May 2007 for the unique services that it gives.
The Dental Spa is not only known for its tranquil environment and anti-anxiety atmosphere, but it is a state of the art modernized facility. It is where Feng Sui and technology comes together. When visiting our office, you will be greeted with sights, sounds, smells, taste and the feel of natural elements. But the operation of the facility does include many of the latest technology devices known in dentistry today to diagnose and treat our patients.
When you hear the word “orthodontics,” what comes to mind? Probably a young teenager whose teeth are covered by a latticework of metal. There are indeed many orthodontic patients who fit that description. However, there now exists an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces: Invisalign® clear aligners.
• Improved Oral Hygiene
• A Discreet Look

Navigating cancer treatment serendipitously led Marissa Gilbert to become a licensed clinical social worker and therapist to support others with the emotional healing she found missing after treatment, and a critical piece of her cancer survivorship journey. This led her to understand the difference between coping and healing and the connective tissue of medical trauma.
Her therapeutic style is personalized and collaborative—meeting people exactly where they are and focusing on progress rather than perfection. She helps clients restore safety in their bodies and rebuild trust in themselves as they heal. She works with clients healing from medical trauma, including cancer, chronic illness and pain. Her work also includes a dual diagnosis focus including addiction and ADHD.
In particular, Marissa specializes in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a proven trauma therapy that helps clients process overwhelming medical experiences like cancer or chronic illness. She helps clients reduce their triggers in medical settings (e.g. anxiety before appointments or scanxiety), rebuild trust in their bodies and experience emotional healing. Marissa practices an integrative approach, also utilizing somatic-based practices and Internal Family Systems-inspired techniques.
In addition to individual sessions, Marissa offers couples and group therapy designed for healthier relationships and rebuilding joy in daily life. She also provides EMDR intensive therapy options for those who wish to process trauma more quickly through extended sessions. Above all, recognizing life is messy and healing is not linear, Marissa is committed to helping people find peace in their bodies, clarity in their minds and connection to themselves and others. She recently launched her own practice Friedman Gilbert Therapy and is licensed in Virginia and Texas. You can also work with her or find other like-minded therapists for children and adults through Think Happy Live Healthy in Northern Virginia. Marissa has two mini labradoodles and you may find one popping up to join sessions, he promises full confidentiality.
Many assume that once treatment for cancer ends and you have completed physical healing, you are completely recovered. But maybe you are experiencing flashbacks from treatment that is interrupting your sleep. Or you feel dread for the next doctor’s appointment that you will receive bad news again because it has already happened once. This is called medical trauma and is more common and normal than most people realize. Cancer doesn’t just affect your body, it impacts your mind, emotions, relationships and sense of identity.
What is Medical Trauma?
Medical trauma is the psychological and emotional distress from medical care that feels overwhelming or out of your control. It might stem from receiving a cancer diagnosis, enduring unexpected side effects, managing a chronic illness or navigating long hospital stays. For many, the sense of vulnerability and uncertainty can feel just as unsettling as the illness itself. Recognizing that your experience was traumatic can be deeply empowering.
How It Shows Up
• Anxiety before scans, labs or follow-ups (our friend scanxiety)
• Panic or dread in medical settings even when there for someone else
• Feeling numb, exhausted or emotionally flat
• Trouble trusting doctors or your own body again
• Grief around fertility, body changes, or identity shifts Hypervigilance about every new symptom
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone – and it’s not just anxiety or an “overreaction” – it is your nervous system’s natural way of remembering past threats and trying to keep you safe. Ignoring the emotional side of recovery can make long-term healing harder. Stress and avoidance may interfere with follow-up care, while unprocessed memories can drain energy and worsen physical symptoms.
Emotional Healing Tools
• Therapeutic Support: Bottomup approaches such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) focus on regulating the nervous system and promoting safety and stability to help the mind and body process what happened.
• Mind-Body Practices: Exploring practices like meditation, deep breathing or reiki provide focus on the present moment to reduce anxiety and negative thought cycles.
• Connection: Sharing your story or listening to others that share your story reduces isolation, restores trust and normalizes your grief. Whether you are looking for a group related to fertility or for caregivers there are many options.
Emotional healing is a vital part of recovery and isn’t about “fixing” yourself – it’s about learning how to live meaningfully and gently with what you’ve been through.

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry.
It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult.
I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology. I received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, New York, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board certified, I am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams!
“Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru pursues pediatric dentistry with a passion rooted in her fascinating personal story.
For Doctor Lynda, the pathway to dentistry started during her own childhood experience with a dentist’s impact in her native Nigeria. As the eldest of nine children (including seven brothers), she witnessed a total transformation in the health of one of her little brothers after his aches and pains were totally resolved under the care of a well-trained dentist. As a result of this transformative experience, young Lynda determined to extend that kind of care to others as her life’s calling. She went on to earn her dentistry degree from the University of Benin, her General Practice residency from Howard University Hospital, her Pediatric Dentistry Specialty Training from Children’s National Medical Center, Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and her Fellowship Laser Certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry.
Doctor Lynda has undertaken much continuing education in Orthodontic training and is a fellow of the United States Dental Institute and a member of the prestigious Gnathos education group in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds a certification in Oral Myology from the International Association of Oral Myology (IAOM). She has completed levels 1 and 2 of the Advanced Light force functionals (ALF) therapy, ALF Interface Academy Foundations, Genesis, and other courses.
Doctor Lynda is part of an Integrative team of healthcare providers seeking to deliver optimal health to our pediatric population by education, awareness, and collaborative care. She also has a special interest in treatment that focuses on infants’ breastfeeding and prevention of sleep apnea in children.
She is a member of numerous professional and civic associations and provides tens of thousands of dollars in pro bono screenings and procedures along with other community service in Northern Virginia every year.

Dr. Wright earned her undergraduate degree in 1990 from Boston College in Biology. In 1994, she completed her graduate studies at Boston University. Her studies continued in Washington, DC at Howard University. There, she completed the Advanced Education Program in General Dentistry in 1996. Dr. Wright began her dental career in private practice, then ventured into Public and School-Based Health Centers from 1997-2002. In 2001, she re-entered the private practice arena. After seven years as an associate, Dr. Wright decided to create the Wright Smile Center of Woodbridge.
Dr. Wright is a current member of the Old Dominion Dental Society where she served as both Vice President and President from 2019-2024. The organization is the oldest organization of dentists of African American descent based in Richmond, Virginia.
Her mission is to motivate patients who seek quality dental treatment in a comfortable, friendly and modern environment. Her focus is to educate and excite patients about dental health and improve their overall appearance and wellness.
She is currently partnering with other local dentists and a nonprofit organization to provide care to immigrants from various countries.
Dr. Wright and her husband are the proud parents of one son. She enjoys cooking, traveling, crafts, singing, and encouraging others.

Your smile is one of the first characteristics noticed by others and it is never too late to create a beautiful and
balanced smile. A smile with beautifully aligned teeth will definitely make a better first impression.
Over the past several years adult orthodontic therapy has increased in popularity. Oral health awareness, longer life expectancy and higher quality of life play into this trend. A study conducted in March, 2010 by Michigan’s Wayne State University, concluded that people with bigger smiles may actually live longer.
Adults want and expect to pre -

serve their natural teeth and maintaining what we have has become more important than ever. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, from 1994 to 2004 there was a 37% increase in adult patients, and the percentage keeps increasing. Some famous adult orthodontic patients who improved their smiles include Tom Cruise, Kelly Brook, Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldburg, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Nicolas Cage, Venus Williams, Cher and the list goes on.
Tom Cruise got his braces when he was 40 years old and filming Minority Report. Check out his smile in Rain Man or The Firm and compare to post-braces Tom in Valkyrie or Tropical Thunder.
The biological process involved in tooth movement is the same in both adults and children. As long as the periodontium (supporting bone and
gums) is healthy, teeth will respond to orthodontic treatment. With all the recent innovative advancements in orthodontics, wearing braces has never been easier.
The newer appliances greatly reduce discomfort, decrease the frequency of visits and shorten treatment time. Adults have many treatment options available now. Modern metal braces are smaller in size, less visible and more hygienic.
Aesthetic clear braces and lingual braces are another very popular option. Some patients may even be candidates for treatment with Invisalign.

Proper breathing during sleep is crucial for the overall well-being of children, yet many parents may not be fully aware of potential issues related to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD), which includes pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
SRBD refer to disturbances in normal breathing patterns during sleep, ranging from common snoring to more severe pauses in breathing known as apnea events. These interruptions can lead to sleep deprivation and a variety of health complications. In the case of children, untreated SRDB can result in developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges, potentially leading to conditions like allergies, ADD/ADHD, and depression.
Pediatric OSA, a condition where the airway is partially or completely
During the first 18 months of a child’s life, crucial growth and developmental milestones occur, many of which are related to facial development. Ensuring proper breathing is essential for a child’s health and development, impacting facial features, jaw development, and overall growth. Mouth breathing can set off a chain reaction of issues, altering the growth of the lower and upper jaws, midface, and nasal bones, ultimately affecting the child’s facial balance.
Children with SRDB may present a range of symptoms. In the case of pediatric OSA, symptoms may involve snoring, breathing pauses, restlessness, and coughing or choking episodes during sleep.
Contrary to conventional belief, pediatric dentists with specialized training are well-equipped to address symptoms related to sleep and airway conditions. The airway, mode of breathing, and malocclusion are closely interconnected and should be addressed early and holistically by dentists. Advanced technology, such as cone

The prevalence of chronic pelvic pain syndrome is 9%, effecting millions of women and men. Although this is a common problem it can take years and many doctor’s visits to be
physical therapists understand the many faces of pelvic pain and provide effective conservative treatments that provide relief for those suffering with pelvic pain.
Pelvic pain can present itself as pain with sexual intercourse, bladder and bowel pain, killer pain associated with menstrual periods, pelvic girdle, groin, vaginal, rectal and perineal pain.
There are multiple sources of pelvic pain. It can originate from the pelvic or abdominal organs, muscles, joints, fascia, spine, and hips.
Pelvic pain can lead to muscle spasms in the pelvic floor muscles.
and tight or the opposite can occur, the pelvic floor muscles can become weak. Both non-relaxing and weak pelvic floor muscles can be a major contributor of pelvic pain.
Here’s a list of the most common diagnoses associated with pelvic pain:
• Dyspareunia: This is pain associated with vaginal penetration during sexual intercourse. It often occurs after pregnancy at three months postpartum or it can be associated with endometriosis, menopause, and other conditions.
• Interstitial Cystitis: Also known as painful bladder syndrome, this is defined as chronic pelvic pain

(lasting greater than 6 months), pressure or discomfort perceived to be related to the urinary bladder and accompanied by at least one other urinary symptom such as increased urinary urge or frequency.
• Levator Ani Syndrome: When the levator ani deep muscles don’t relax, constant or frequent pain in the rectum or anus is experienced.
• Vulvodynia: This is pain or discomfort at the vulva lasting greater than three months that usually presents as burning pain.
• Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: The function of pelvic floor muscles is to support the pelvic organs, prevent incontinence, allow for ease of defecation and urination and they provide a sexual function. Pelvic floor dysfunction can cause constipation, painful sexual intercourse, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary frequency, chronic pelvic pain and both urinary and fecal incontinence.
• Endometriosis: This is a common condition that causes chronic pelvic and/or abdominal pain and very painful periods. One in 10 women suffer from this condition however most women see eight doctors over 10 years before getting diagnosed. This is a complex condition and the symptoms vary.
• Vaginismus: This is instantaneous and involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles in anticipation of vaginal penetration causing the inability to participate in sexual intercourse.
A pelvic health physical therapist will provide a thorough subjective and objective evaluation and develop a treatment program specific to your problems and goals. Treatments may include one or more of the following:
• Manual therapy – internal and external techniques
• Visceral mobilization
• Therapeutic Exercises
• Neuro-muscular reeducation
• Specific functional training
• EMG biofeedback
• Electric stimulation
Many women and men with chronic pelvic floor problems have never been treated by a pelvic health physical therapist. Don’t suffer in silence – contact a provider who has experience treating these conditions and get the help you need.

Sun Protection All Year Long
Even limited sun exposure can cause damage to aging skin. Seniors should use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors and reapply it every two hours if spending time in direct sunlight. Protective clothing—such as long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses—offers an additional layer of safety.
Monitor Skin For Changes
Older skin heals more slowly, so small wounds or sores deserve close attention. Caregivers should watch for redness, bruising, new growths, or sores that don’t heal. Early detection of skin cancers such as melanoma,
basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma greatly improves treatment outcomes.
Comfort and Confidence Through Care
Skin care isn’t only about physical comfort—it also affects selfesteem and emotional well-being. Helping an older adult maintain a soothing skincare routine can be both nurturing and confidence-boosting.
For family members who find skincare routines challenging or time-consuming, professional home care assistance can help. Trained caregivers can provide gentle bathing, moisturizing, and observation for early signs of skin issues—helping seniors stay healthy, comfortable, and confident as they age gracefully.
The initial costs of dental implants may seem high when compared to the cost of bridges and dentures, but it’s important to consider the lifetime costs of each tooth replacement option. With proper care, your implant will last your entire life, while bridges and dentures may need to be replaced several times. Dental implants offer several benefits that other replacement options don’t, including:
• No Jawbone Loss – Your teeth roots constantly stimulate your jawbone and keep it strong. When you lose
a tooth, the bone underneath begins to recede. Since dental implants take the place of your roots, you don’t have to worry about jawbone loss.
• Better Chewing – If you choose dentures to replace lost teeth, you may not be able to eat certain hard foods. Eating isn’t a problem with dental implants.
• Easy Care – You’ll care for your implants the same way you do your natural teeth. Infections are rare if you practice good oral hygiene.
microorganisms present and measures your risk for various oral conditions. When results return, your dentist will review your personalized report and use the findings to:
• Design a treatment plan that targets harmful bacteria while supporting healthy balance
• Monitor your progress and track how your oral health changes over time
• Detect early warning signs before they develop into more serious issues
Many oral diseases begin quietly. Saliva testing helps identify risks before symptoms appear, allowing preventive action.
Since your dentist knows which bacteria are involved, your dentist can create a treatment plan tailored to your needs rather than a one-size-fitsall approach.
Your dentist can repeat the test periodically to track your microbiome and ensure your oral environment
stays balanced and healthy.
Whole-Body Health
Research continues to show that oral bacteria influence the rest of the body. Inflammation and bacterial imbalance are linked to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and systemic inflammation. Understanding your oral microbiome helps protect your overall wellness.
When
If you experience persistent gum bleeding, bad breath, chronic inflammation, or recurring dental problems, you should consult your dentist about saliva testing. Identifying bacterial imbalances early can help prevent complications and support your long-term health.
Oral health is connected to wholebody health. By incorporating saliva testing through Bristle and OralDNA into our periodontal care, your dentist can identify concerns earlier, personalize treatment, and help our patients achieve healthier, more sustainable results.
Your saliva tells a story about your health. With the right insight and care, your dentist can use that information to protect your smile and support your well-being for years to come.
beam 3D imaging, allows dentists to effectively diagnose airway issues and guide proper growth and development. Early intervention is essential in guiding proper growth and development.
Convenient at-home sleep study tests are now available to diagnose pediatric sleep apnea and breathing issues. These tests provide comprehensive, accurate data for proper diagnoses.

Treatment goals encompass the elimination of detrimental habits, guiding optimal cranial, jaw, and facial development, preventing dental misalignment, and enhancing airway health and oxygen sufficiency. Various therapies, including oral appliances, myofunctional therapy and positive airway pressure therapy, can effectively alleviate symptoms.

Let me start with something important: I’m not against fluoride.
In fact, I’ve used it every day in my dental practice for almost 30 years—across hospitals, universities, the military, private clinics, and even on Native American reservations. I’ve seen fluoride varnish reverse early cavities, and fluoride toothpaste strengthen enamel in the children who needed it most.
But now, like many health professionals who care deeply about children’s well-being, I’m asking a serious question: Is putting fluoride into everyone’s tap water still the best way to protect our kids’ teeth?
It might have made sense 80 years ago. But with everything we now know— about fluoride, nutrition, modern health risks, and exposure sources—it’s time to take another look.
A Strange Origin: From Industrial Waste To Public Health Policy
Fluoride didn’t enter public water systems because of dentistry. It began as industrial pollution.
In the early 1900s, major corporations like ALCOA (Aluminum Company of America), DuPont, and fertilizer manufacturers were facing lawsuits. Their factories were releasing toxic fluoride gases that damaged crops, sickened livestock, and harmed communities nearby.
Meanwhile, a dentist in Colorado— Dr. Frederick McKay—noted that patients had unusual brown stains on their teeth. Oddly, those teeth were less prone to cavities. By 1931, ALCOA chemist H.V. Churchill found the cause: natural water in some areas contained fluoride—up to 13.7 parts per million (ppm).
Suddenly, fluoride wasn’t just a pollutant. It had a potential upside.
Then came the pivot. In 1939, Dr. Gerald Cox of the Mellon Institute— closely tied to ALCOA—suggested adding fluoride to drinking water to prevent tooth decay. This wasn’t driven by public demand—it served an industrial purpose.
Dr. H. Trendley Dean at the National Institutes of Health later promoted fluoridation. But his research would eventually be criticized for poor design, missing control groups, and cherry-picked data. Investigative journalist Christopher Bryson, in The Fluoride Deception, highlighted how politics and flawed research helped launch a national policy.
In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first U.S. city to fluoridate its water—not with medical-grade fluoride,
but with an industrial byproduct of fertilizer manufacturing.
The public was never consulted. What the Science Actually Supports: Topical Fluoride Works Fluoride used on the teeth— in toothpaste or varnish—does work. It reverses early decay, strengthens enamel, and protects against acid attacks. That’s why pediatric dentists like me use it every day.
But swallowed fluoride? That’s a different story.
Drinking fluoride doesn’t do much to prevent cavities between teeth—the most common and hardest kind to reach in children.
Does Water Fluoridation Still Make Sense?
Despite nearly 80 years of water fluoridation, here’s what we see:
• Over 1 in 5 children (ages 6–11) in the U.S. have untreated cavities.
• Countries like Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan don’t fluoridate their water—and yet have similar or better dental health outcomes.
• These countries emphasize topical fluoride, education, and access to care—not mass exposure through drinking water.
Even in affluent communities, interproximal decay—cavities between teeth— is on the rise.Water fluoridation does little to prevent these.
Fluoride Exposure Is Coming From Everywhere
Today’s children are exposed to fluoride from multiple sources:
• Swallowed toothpaste (especially in toddlers)
• Foods and drinks made with fluoridated water
• Tea, processed juices, and infant formula
• Pesticides on produce
• Mechanically processed meats
Depending on diet and behavior:
• Infants may ingest 1.2–1.6 mg/day
• Children: 1.6–2.2 mg/day
• Adults: up to 2.9 mg/day—or more in hot weather or during exercise.
Fluoride is quickly absorbed in the gut, but only partially excreted. In children (with immature kidneys) and in adults with kidney disease, much more fluoride is retained in the body.Over time, it accumulates—in the bones, brain, and pineal gland.
And It’s Not Just Swallowing
– It’s Bathing, Showering, and Washing
Fluoride exposure doesn’t only come through drinking water.
A 1984 study found that up to 64% of water-borne contaminants—including fluoride—can enter the body through the skin during activities like showering, bathing, and hand-washing.
While European health authorities argue that dermal absorption is minimal under typical pH levels, other experts note that repeated exposure through warm water
may increase uptake, especially in vulnerable individuals.
In short, fluoride exposure isn’t limited to what we drink. It touches every part of daily life.
So...Who Oversees The Fluoride That Goes Into Our Water?
Oversight of fluoride in tap water is fragmented—and unclear:
• The EPA sets a maximum contaminant limit (4.0 mg/L), but it doesn’t promote or regulate fluoridation programs.
• The FDA regulates fluoride in toothpaste and supplements—but not in municipal water systems.
• The CDC offers guidelines (currently 0.7 mg/L), but has no enforcement authority—fluoridation decisions are left to local and state agencies.
And the fluoride used? It’s not pharmaceutical-grade. It’s fluorosilicic acid, an industrial waste product captured from fertilizer plant smokestacks.
Federal law doesn’t require each shipment to be tested. Trace levels of arsenic, lead, and radionuclides have occasionally been detected—even if below legal thresholds.
No single agency is fully responsible for its quality or safety.
What About Low-Income Communities?
Supporters often say fluoridation helps poor children. But here’s the reality:
• Baltimore, MD has fluoridated water— and high rates of childhood decay.
• Los Angeles has been fluoridated since 1961—yet low-income areas still face a dental health crisis.
• Detroit and Cleveland, both fluoridated, show similar patterns.
The issue isn’t lack of fluoride. It’s lack of education, prevention, access to care, and nutrition counseling.
The Bigger Picture:
Diet, Development, and Decay
Children today eat softer, more processed foods. They chew less. That affects more than digestion—it changes their faces:
• Smaller jaws
• Narrower dental arches
• Crowded or rotated teeth
• Harder-to-clean spaces between teeth
These structural changes make interproximal cavities more likely—regardless of fluoride.
And yet, policy still centers around fluoridation. We’re missing the forest for the trees.
Who Really Benefits?
• Fertilizer manufacturers — They profit by selling fluorosilicic acid, a byproduct that would otherwise require costly disposal. Turning industrial waste into a revenue stream provides substantial financial benefit.
• Chemical distributors — They buy fluoride compounds at low cost and resell them to municipal water systems at a markup as part of their treatment contracts.
• Public agencies — By promoting fluoridation as a low-cost preventive measure, agencies maintain the appearance of an inexpensive public health policy, even though dental costs have continued to rise.
Importantly, despite common belief, aluminum companies do not profit from municipal water fluoridation. ALCOA, the largest U.S. aluminum producer, sold its fluoride production facility over 70 years ago and no longer benefits from these sales.
Is There a Smarter Approach?
Many countries already know:
• Use fluoride varnish at dental visits
• Apply silver diamine fluoride to stop small cavities
• Offer supervised brushing programs in schools
• Provide parent education on bottle use and nutrition
• Improve access to care for underserved children
These strategies are ethical, efficient, and effective.
Final Thoughts: Awareness First
Fluoride is a fascinating story—part science, part history, and part public policy. What began as an industrial challenge grew into one of the largest public health experiments in history. Along the way, we’ve learned much about fluoride’s benefits, its limitations, and its risks.
This article isn’t meant to demand change or push an agenda. It’s meant to share what we know now—so that parents, communities, and health professionals can have more informed conversations.
A good comparison is antibiotics. When used properly, antibiotics can save lives and prevent suffering. But when they’re given too broadly, too often, or in the wrong way, they can cause harm—such as antibiotic resistance or unintended side effects. Fluoride, too, can be extremely beneficial when used topically and in controlled doses. But applying it universally through drinking water exposes people in ways that may not be necessary or even optimal today.
The truth is layered: fluoride can help, but it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. By understanding its history, its biology, and the many sources of exposure, we can better place it in context with modern nutrition, preventive care, and overall child health.
Ultimately, the goal is not alarm, but awareness. With knowledge, families can ask better questions, weigh the evidence, and make thoughtful decisions for their children and their communities.
