Preventive eye care is important to everyone because eye conditions and diseases that can destroy you and your family’s healthy vision can strike at any time in life, from newborn to old age. Read below for suggested guidelines on when you and your family should have your eyes checked. Infants and toddlers should be screened for common eye problems, such as strabismus (crossed eyes) and Amblyopia (lazy eye) during their regular pediatric appointments. Vision testing is recommended for all children starting at around three years of age.
Most children and teenagers have healthy eyes, but they still need to take care of their vision by wearing protective eyewear when playing sports, doing yard work, working with chemicals, or taking part in other activities that could cause an eye injury.
Even young adults and middleaged individuals can be affected by eye problems, so preventive measures should be taken to detect eye diseases early and to protect eye from injury. These individuals should have a complete eye exam at least once between the ages of 20 and 29, at least twice between the ages of 30 and 39 and every two to four years between the ages of 40 and 65.
Seniors over age 65 should have a complete eye exam by their Eye M.D. every one to two years for cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other eye conditions.
The suggested examination guidelines are:
• Ages zero to two: screening during regular pediatric appointments
• Ages three to five: screening every one to two years during regular primary care appointments
• Ages six to 19: schedule examinations as needed
• Ages 20 to 29: one examination
• Ages 30 to 39: two examinations
• Ages 40 to 65: examination every
two to four years
• Ages 65 and over: examination every one to two years
But check with your Eye M.D. to see how often you should have a complete eye exam if any of the following risk factors affect your eyes:
• History of eye injury
• Diabetes
• Family history of eye problems
• African American over age 40
Protecting your eyes from accidents, early detection, and treatment of eye problems are the best ways to keep your healthy vision throughout life. If you and your family are at risk for eye disease or experience any eye problems, visit your Eye M.D. promptly.

Fast Fact #1:
Your eyes use more oxygen than any other tissue in your body.
Fast Fact #2:
Make Healthy Choices. More than 13 million Americans have age-related macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness. Age, smoking, high blood pressure, and exposure to sunlight increase your risk of developing this disease.
Fast Fact #3:
Rest your eyes. Computer vision syndrome symptoms include sore eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. To avoid this syndrome, reduce screen glare and take a five-minute computer break every 20 minutes.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

In dentistry, great care doesn’t come from the dentist alone—it’s the result of a coordinated effort by an entire team. Among the most essential members of that team are clinical assistants. These professionals work behind the scenes and chairside to ensure every visit is smooth, safe, and as comfortable as possible for the patient. Their experience and compassion make a meaningful difference in the quality of care patients receive.
Clinical assistants are often the first to welcome patients into the treatment room, helping to ease anxiety and set a reassuring tone. For children, teens, and adults alike, a calming presence and clear communication go a long way in reducing fear and creating a positive dental experience. An assistant who is both knowledgeable and empathetic can build trust quickly—something that’s especially important in longer or more complex treatments.
Their technical skills are equally vital. From preparing and sterilizing instruments to taking impressions, digital scans, and radiographs, clinical assistants help ensure procedures are accurate and efficient. Their attention to detail supports the dentist in delivering everything from preventive cleanings and fillings to surgical procedures and orthodontic care. When every second counts and precision matters, a trained assistant is indispensable.
Beyond clinical work, these team members also play a key role in
patient education. They teach proper brushing and flossing techniques, answer questions about treatment, and offer guidance on maintaining oral health at home. This kind of education is a powerful tool—it helps patients make informed decisions and reinforces the importance of preventive care.
In practices that offer a range of
services—including orthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric and general dentistry—assistants must be versatile and well-trained. Their ability to anticipate the needs of both the patient and the provider helps create a seamless experience from start to finish. It also allows the dentist to focus fully on diagnosis and treatment, knowing that every other detail is being expertly managed. Ultimately, the presence of skilled, caring clinical assistants elevates every aspect of dental care. Their dedication often goes unnoticed, but their impact is unmistakable—ensuring that each patient receives not just treatment, but thoughtful attention, comfort, and support along the way.

If you’re a baby boomer, born between 1946 and 1964, there are so many reasons to focus on and improve your oral health. Periodontal (gum) disease risks rise with age and can lead to a host of physical problems. There is no better day than today to get a checkup by a dentist specially trained in knowing the links between your mouth and body health.
Boomers grew up in a time of prosperity, education, and opportunity. This generation has a greater need for oral treatment than any other. The Centers for Disease Control reports that 70% of Americans 65 and older have chronic gum disease. Surveys suggest that growing up in a time of plenty may have led to a taste for a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar. This has caused enamel erosion and gingivitis.
Research also shows that boomers can do better to protect their oral health. One survey shows only 40% of older people use
mouthwash, 34% brush their teeth only once a day, and 47% say they often skip flossing.
When age-related conditions like arthritis or joint pain make proper brushing and flossing more difficult, it exacerbates the problem further.
Another reason to take care of your mouth as you age is the growing connection between gum disease and Alzheimer’s disease. More than 6 million Americans over 65
have been diagnosed with this form of dementia, a number projected to more than double by 2050.
A 2019 National Institutes of Health study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease shows the bacteria that cause gingivitis, the earliest form of periodontal disease, are also connected to several forms of dementia. One species of bacteria is believed to migrate from gum infections through the bloodstream and into the brain. There, they release enzymes that can destroy nerve cells, leading to memory loss and Alzheimer’s.
The relationship between dementia and gum disease goes the other way, too: People with memory loss may neglect their oral health and a mild problem may turn into something much more severe.
Our patients mean the world to us (and they love to refer to us as friends and
and
We are deeply committed to help you prevent and treat periodontal (gum) disease, and to enhance your smile to improve your overall health.
Research is underway to develop a drug that can block bad bacterial enzymes and slow the progression of dementia. Until then, it is imperative to take extra care of your teeth and gums as you age.
• Brush twice a day, floss once or twice a day, and visit your periodontist for a checkup.
• Cut out sugary foods and beverages. Use the artificial sweetener xylitol, which is shown to starve harmful bacteria and reduce plaque buildup.
• Dry mouth lowers oral pH, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Talk to us about special alcohol-free oral rinses, lozenges, and other preventive measures.
• Swish with water after eating and consuming sweet and acidic drinks.
• Resolve to adopt a healthier diet and lifestyle for overall good health. Studies show this alone may lower your risk for Alzheimer’s disease by up to 60%.
Aging does not mean gum disease and related health problems are inevitable. Baby boomers are known for being proactive about health care when they have the right information. Call us today for a no-charge phone consultation to answer any questions you may have. We are happy to do our part and help you improve your oral health in your golden years.

Aging, genetics, and environmental factors can cause the skin to lose volume and elasticity, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and hollow areas. Dermal fillers provide a non-surgical solution to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. This minimally invasive treatment offers natural-looking results with little to no downtime.
Dermal fillers are injectable substances that add volume and smooth wrinkles. Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps retain moisture and elasticity. Other types include calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse), poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), each suited for different areas and effects.
Benefits Of Dermal Fillers
• Wrinkle Reduction – Fillers soften fine lines and deep creases, such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
• Volume Restoration – Aging causes volume loss in the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes, which fillers effectively restore.
• Lip Enhancement – Fillers create fuller, more defined lips.
• Jawline & Chin Contouring –They enhance facial symmetry by refining the jawline and chin.
• Hand Rejuvenation – Fillers restore volume to aging hands, reducing wrinkles and visible veins.
The Procedure
The treatment takes about 30 to 45 minutes. A trained provider injects the filler using a fine needle or cannula. A numbing agent may be applied for comfort. Results are immediate, with continued improvement as the filler settles.
When administered by a licensed professional, dermal fillers are safe with minimal risks. Temporary side effects may include mild swelling, redness, and bruising, which usually resolve within a few days. Choosing an experienced injector ensures natural, balanced results.
The longevity of dermal fillers varies. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 6 to 18 months, while collagen-stimulating fillers like Sculptra can last up to two years.
Dermal fillers are ideal for those seeking natural-looking enhancements without surgery. A consulta-
tion with a qualified provider can help determine the best approach based on your facial structure and aesthetic goals.
With dermal fillers, achieving a youthful, refreshed look is easier than ever. Whether restoring volume, smoothing wrinkles, or enhancing features, this treatment provides a safe and effective way to look and feel your best.
By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
It is almost impossible to maintain a nice smile when you are hurting, and especially when that pain comes from TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). When the discs in the jaw joints are out of place, they can and will pinch nerves and blood vessels in the jaw joints. This is a concept that few doctors understand as it was
never taught in school. Such training often requires extensive post-graduate education, and oftentimes that can be very hard to find!
As a patient, you should be aware that there are many ways to treat the TMJ disorder. To figure out which one(s) are right for you, the first step is diagnosing. A proper diagnosis is where it all starts and that means a very good MRI (soft tissue) and CBCT x-ray of the joints. From there, your
course of treatment might include orthotic (non-surgical dental oral appliance treatment), physical therapy, osteopathy, dry needling, acupuncture, massage, and even laser therapy.
Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS
At our office, we most frequently use appliance therapy to make space for the displaced discs to return into the socket. Along with your appliances, we oftentimes do massage or laser therapy. This is a specialty treatment. Our massage therapist incorporates the Fotona laser to achieve good energy deep into the tissues to maximize healing. It quite honestly feels “wonderful” according to our patients.
When a patient wears an orthotic appliance on their lower teeth, this allows the displaced discs the chance to get back into proper position within the socket. This takes time. Most cases the displacements occurred over the course of years and it often takes a year for those discs to go back into place, if they will at all. In the event that they do not go back where they belong, a minor surgery can be done to put them back into the joints. This is called plication.
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”
- Susan
The other appliance that is used is the ALF. This little wire has the ability to open up the palate which makes it easier to breathe. It can also lower a high palatal vault which allows better nasal breathing. When a person breathes through their nose more, this allows for better production of nitric oxide which helps the body to heal better. It also helps level the cranial bones to some extent and thus reduce asymmetry of the skull. This little device really is amazing. Admittedly, it takes years of training to get a handle on it, but it is well worth it.
Ultimately, when a TMD case has healed or improved enough to not need surgery, it is time to finish up so you do not need to wear appliances any longer. This can be accomplished either by orthodontics or prosthodontics. The purpose is to support your jaw joints and the discs in the correct anatomical position. It is important that you understand the mechanism of how this works so choose your provider carefully and do your research! Your smile is worth it.

Staying well hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your oral and overall health.
Although bottled water is commonly perceived as being the “cleaner” alternative to tap water, it is missing one vital component – fluoride. Many experts attribute the recent rise in cavities to be linked to the surge of bottle water consumption.
What Are the Benefits Of Tap Water?
Fluoride can slow the rate at which tooth enamel demineralizes and also encourage remineralization of an area that has the early stages (white spots) of a cavity. According to the American
Dental Association, “studies prove water fluoridation continues to be effective in reducing tooth decay by 20-40%, even in an era with widespread availability of fluoride from other sources, such as fluoride toothpaste.
Fluoridation is one public health program that actually saves money. An individual can have a lifetime of fluoridated water for less than the cost of one dental filling.”
Tap water also contains calcium and magnesium. There have been studies that show that communities
that have tap water containing higher levels of calcium and magnesium have lower death rates since they can help protect against heart disturbances.
Is Tap Water Safe?
Although water fluoridation is safe and beneficial for our oral health, over exposure to fluoride can cause dental fluorosis. Fluorosis in most cases is generally mild, but may cause some whitish spots on the permanent teeth.
For infants who are on formula that already contains fluoride, parents should take caution when reconstituting with fluorinated water. Talk to your pediatrician before altering the diet for your infant. Fluoride toothpaste and rinses should also not be consumed, since it contains a dangerous level of fluoride if ingested in large amounts.
If you are on well water or are unsure of the fluoride levels in your community you may consider getting your water tested. If you have concerns about water quality, contact the Service Authority of your county. Chlorine is a product that is added to water during the filtration process that helps get rid of bacteria. Refrigerating your tap water overnight and using a water filtration system, can help remove impurities and give your tap water a crisp clean taste.
If there is no fluoride in your community water please ask your dentist to determine if your child may be in need of a fluoride supplement.

Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process, and seeking ways to curb this process is a challenge. There are many products on the market that claim to re-grow hair, but the results are mixed. Some work for some people, and for others, not so well.
Surgically transplanting hair has come a long way over the past decade - to the point where follicular unit grafting (FUG) is now more widely accepted. It’s not like the old-style plugs people used to get.
These grafts are indistinguishable from your natural hair and are probably more durable than your natural hair in the long run.
While your natural hair still present on the top and front of your scalp may continue to thin or fall out, the grafted hairs from the sides and back of your head are more likely to be there permanently.
The latest procedure for hair transplantation is follicular unit extraction (FUE), where each hair is harvested and individually placed in a new location on your scalp. By doing this there are no scars to deal with, and the procedure is more tolerable and may even be a little safer.
One of the first FUE devices to be cleared by the FDA for follicular unit harvesting and implantation is the NeoGraft® system, which delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technique in the hair transplant industry.
This system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles, which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. This automated hair transplantation system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only “no touch” implantation technology.
It provides exact harvesting and placement, delivering natural looking results. This advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scar-
ring, minimal downtime, and a shorter recovery period. Hair restoration with NeoGraft is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell.
How the Procedure Works:
Step One: Donor Hair Removal
The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone.
Step Two: Separation of the Follicular Units
Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate.
Step Three: Creation of the Recipient Sites
The hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to
the artistic hair transplant plan he or she has designed specifically for you.
Step Four: Placement of the Hair Graft
The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. Grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results.
Virginia Hair Transplant is excited to announce our newest offering, NeoGraft®. NeoGraft® introduces the “state-of-the-art” solution for hair loss. This game changing technology automates the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to give patients more natural looking results with minimal downtime, no linear scaring and no stitches.

For a Healthy Body
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is more than an oral health issue—it’s a chronic inflammatory condition that affects your overall health. Your dentists office should take a comprehensive approach to periodontal care because managing your gums helps protect more than just your smile—it safeguards your entire well-being.
Periodontal disease starts as gingivitis—red, swollen gums that bleed easily—and can progress to periodontitis, where bone and tooth support structures are damaged. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and contribute to systemic inflammation.
Common Symptoms:
• Bleeding gums
• Red, swollen, or tender gums
• Persistent bad breath
• Receding gums
• Loose or shifting teeth
The Link Between Gum Health and Overall Health
Periodontal disease is linked to serious health conditions:
• Nearly 50% of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease.
• Gum disease doubles the risk of diabetes
• It increases the risk of heart dis-

Choosing the right home care agency for yourself or a loved one is an important decision that requires thoughtful consideration. Not all agencies offer the same level of service or care, and asking the right questions up front can help you avoid costly mistakes and ensure peace of mind. Here’s what to ask before you sign on the dotted line.
1. Are You Licensed, Bonded, and Insured?
Always start with this question. A reputable home care agency should be licensed in your state, carry liability insurance, and bond their caregivers. This protects both the agency and the client in case of an accident or incident.
2. How Do You Screen and Train Your Caregivers?
Ask about background checks, references, certifications, and any ongoing training programs. You want caregivers who are both qualified and compassionate. Some agencies also conduct personality and skills assessments to ensure a good client-caregiver match.
3. What Services Do You Provide?
Not all agencies offer the same level of care. Some focus on nonmedical support like companionship,

By E. Richard Hughes, DDS
Due to the advances in modern medicine, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, people are living considerably longer than they use to. Because tooth loss is directly related to age, an increasing number of adults are missing teeth.
When an adult reaches the age of 65, he or she many times feels an investment in health is less appropriate. A healthy 65 year old woman will live 23 more years 50% of the time and 29 more years 25% of the time. A healthy 65 year old male will live another 20 years 50% of the time and another 27 years 25% of the time.
So from the above, one can see that an investment in their oral health is actually a better investment than a new automobile, that depreciates rapidly after purchase.
Dental implants are 97% successful over ten years. Let’s compare a single tooth replacement with a dental implant verses a three tooth cemented bridge. The estimated life span of a cemented bridge is 50% at 10 years.
Cavities are the most common cause of crown or bridge failure. 15% of the teeth anchoring (abutments) require root canal treatment. Failure of abutment teeth is about eight percent to 12% at 10 years and 30% at 15 years. 80% of teeth adjacent to the sites of missing teeth are with no or minimal fillings.
The potential lifetime cost of a single crown replacement prior to dental implant treatment is at least $9,000 or more. The potential lifetime cost for a three unit fixed (cemented) bridge replacement is at least $19,300 to $22,300. The cost of a single implant, crown and abutment in Northern Virginia is about $2777 to $5000 or more.
So one can see that dental implants are actually a cost effective way to replace missing teeth and maintain their oral health, function and esthetics.
Dental implants are the naturallooking replacement solution missing teeth. Since implants are permanently anchored into the jawbone, this “fixed” cosmetic dentistry solution allows for better chewing than removable dentures.

• Have stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise
• Are close to their ideal weight but want better definition
If you’ve struggled with stubborn fat that won’t go away despite diet and exercise, 360 liposuction might be the ultimate solution for achieving the sculpted body you desire. Unlike traditional liposuction, which focuses on specific areas, 360 liposuction provides a comprehensive, full-body contouring approach to enhance your natural shape from every angle.
360 liposuction, also known as Lipo 360, is an advanced body contouring procedure that targets multiple areas of the midsection, including the:
• Abdomen
• Flanks (love handles)
• Lower back
• Upper back
• Waistline
By addressing fat deposits around the entire torso, this technique creates a more balanced, 360-degree transformation, enhancing the natural curves of the body.
The procedure uses advanced liposuction techniques to gently remove excess fat while sculpting a smoother, more contoured appearance. Depending on your needs, your provider may use:
• Tumescent liposuction (a minimally invasive approach using local anesthesia)
• Laser-assisted liposuction (to help tighten the skin)
• Power-assisted liposuction (for more precise fat removal)
Since 360 liposuction treats multiple areas at once, it creates a dramatic yet natural-looking transformation.
Who Is a Good Candidate For 360 Liposuction?
Ideal candidates for 360 liposuction include individuals who:
• Have good skin elasticity to ensure smooth contouring
• Want a more sculpted waistline, flatter stomach, and toned back
It is not a weight-loss proce-
dure but rather a body sculpting method for those seeking enhanced curves and definition.
Recovery from 360 liposuction is typically quicker than traditional liposuction because modern techniques are less invasive. Patients can expect:
• Mild swelling and bruising for the first few weeks
• Compression garments to help shape the body and reduce swelling
• Visible results within a few weeks, with final results appearing after 3-6 months Most patients return to work within a week, depending on the extent of the procedure.
Dr. Brown’s practice focuses on TMJ, sleep apnea and orthodontics. This allows Dr. Brown and his team to provide individualized, focused care for patients dealing with these specific issues. Every day, his practice helps patients of all ages with facial development, sleep issues, chronic headaches, migraines, neck pain, movement disorders, and much more. His training also includes multiple disciplines involving the cranial bones in the skull, and the discs in the jaw joints. Through treatment, Dr. Brown is able to reduce these symptoms, align cranial bones, avoid extractions, and greatly reduce the need for traditional braces. His expertise allows him to identify issues early on which promotes proper facial development using dental appliances. If there is an internal imbalance, whether an adult or child, the body does not develop or function properly. When the cranial bones are lined up correctly, patients are able to function, sleep and generally live better.
With that in mind, the team at Sleep & TMJ Therapy takes a whole-body approach when treatment planning. They work hand in hand with physical therapists and osteopathic doctors for a better success rate. Dr. Brown is devoted to helping patients of all ages live a symptom free life.

In the United States, 1 in 6 people are over the age of 65—a number that continues to grow rapidly as the baby boomer generation ages (U.S. Census). As this population segment expands, so does the need for comprehensive strategies to address their unique healthcare needs, particularly in dental care.
Maintaining oral health in older adults—especially those living with
dementia, Alzheimer’s, or multiple chronic conditions—can be complex. These patients often require specialized care from dentists trained in geriatric dentistry who possess the patience and experience necessary to manage their specific needs. Many older adults reside in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or live at home under the care of family, and as they lose the ability to care for themselves, oral hygiene often suffers.
Dental care for the elderly significantly differs from the general population. Their extensive medication lists and complex medical histories must be factored into treatment planning. In most cases, conservative treatment is preferred over complex procedures. The length of time a patient can tolerate in the dental chair, their physical and cognitive condition, and the potential risks associated with treatment must all be considered.

Dry eye disease is a common condition that affects between 16 and 49 million Americans. It occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears evaporate too quickly because the meibomian glands in the eyelids are not functioning optimally.
Dry eye syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, certain medications, skin conditions like rosacea and environmental factors. This chronic condition can have a significant impact on your quality of life causing eye irritation, pain, blurry vision, and dry or watery eyes. Untreated, it can even lead to further eye health complications.
Despite these constant detrimental effects on quality of life, many dry
eye sufferers are not aware of their diagnosis or that truly effective treatments exist. Though many patients use artificial tears to provide temporary relief, unfortunately the underlying disease process can continue to progress.
Now, relief is in sight! OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based, non-invasive treatment done in the area below the eyes to manage dry eye. The OptiLight is the first and only Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) instrument that is FDA-approved for dry eye management. The treatment is safe, gentle, and is backed by more than 20 clinical studies.
OptiLight uses precise pulses of light to reduce the inflammation that is typically associated with dry eye disease, improve tear quality, increase meibomian gland functionality and reduce the amount of demodex mites and bacteria living around your eyes. The OptiLight procedure is quick and convenient and there is no downtime required following treatment.
You don’t have to suffer with dry eye discomfort anymore. Dry Eye is a complex, multifactorial disease which can require extensive time for proper
diagnosis and formulating customized treatment plans. Visit your eye doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Thank you for voting us #1 Best Eye Care Provider in NOVA

Many people seek orthodontic treatment for an attractive smile. However, the benefits of orthodontic treatment go beyond the obvious physical changes of straight teeth.
Malocclusion is the technical term used by orthodontists for
crooked, crowded and protruded teeth. Literally the word means “bad bite.” Untreated malocclusions or bad bites can lead to speech problems, uneven tooth wear, chewing and periodontal problems.
A bad bite often distributes pressure unevenly across the mouth and puts unhealthy forces on the bones that support the teeth and chewing muscles. If left untreated, years of uneven chewing and grinding in this pattern can lead to problems, such as headaches, TMJ syndrome, and face and neck pain.

Proper breathing during sleep is crucial for the overall well-being of children, yet many parents may not be fully aware of potential issues related to Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD), which includes pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
SRBD refer to disturbances in normal breathing patterns during sleep, ranging from common snoring to more severe pauses in breathing known as apnea events. These interruptions can lead to sleep deprivation and a variety of health complications. In the case of children, untreated SRDB can result in developmental, behavioral, and emotional challenges, potentially leading to conditions like allergies, ADD/ADHD, and depression.
Pediatric OSA, a condition where the airway is partially or completely blocked during sleep, is often caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids and a
Crowded teeth are often difficult to brush and floss, while spacing between teeth leads to food impaction. Both conditions make it harder to keep the teeth clean. Over a period of time these problems can lead to tooth decay, gum diseases, bone loss and possible loss of teeth.
Orthodontic treatment not only aligns the teeth, but it also ensures
proper alignment of both the upper and lower jaws. When both jaws fit together in the right way, they eliminate occlusal trauma, function better and improve the patients’ long-term oral health.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment not only include an attractive smile, but also a healthier mouth and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.
lack of tongue space. It differs from adult OSA, as it may manifest alongside behavioral issues and daytime sleepiness in children.
During the first 18 months of a child’s life, crucial growth and developmental milestones occur, many of which are related to facial development. Ensuring proper breathing is essential for a child’s health and development, impacting facial features, jaw development, and overall growth. Mouth breathing can set off a chain reaction of issues, altering the growth of the lower and upper jaws, midface, and nasal bones, ultimately affecting the child’s facial balance.
Pediatric Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) and OSA Symptoms
Children with SRDB may present a range of symptoms, including:
• Difficulty falling or staying asleep
• Sleepwalking, night terrors, and other parasomnias
• Excessive daytime sleepiness
• Mouth breathing, dry lips, bad breath
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Tonsil and adenoid problems
• Snoring
• Teeth grinding
• Bed-wetting

Pursuing a career in healthcare can be deeply rewarding, but the cost of education is a significant challenge for many students. Fortunately, a wide range of scholarships are available to support aspiring nurses, doctors, and therapists. These scholarships can help reduce the financial burden and make it easier for students to focus on their training and future careers in service to others.
Nursing students have access to a large number of scholarships, both nationally and locally. The HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program, for example, offers funding in exchange for service in highneed areas. Many state-level nursing associations and hospitals also sponsor scholarships for residents pursuing RN, BSN, or advanced degrees in nursing. Academic merit, financial need, and commitment to working in underserved commu-
nities are common eligibility factors.
Medical education is among the most expensive, but scholarships do exist—especially for students from underrepresented backgrounds or those committed to working in primary care. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program provides full tuition and a living stipend for students who agree to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas after graduation. Many medical schools also offer institutional scholarships based on need or academic excellence, so it’s important to explore options at each individual school.
Aspiring occupational therapists, physical therapists, speechlanguage pathologists, and mental health counselors can also find targeted scholarships. For example, the American Occupational Therapy Foundation and the American
Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation both offer annual awards. Some scholarships are tied to specific graduate programs or geographic areas, while others are open to students nationwide. Many prioritize applicants with a strong record of volunteerism or community involvement.
Start early, and apply broadly. Many scholarships have early deadlines or require essays, transcripts, and recommendation letters. Tailor your applications to show not just academic potential but also a commitment to helping others and contributing to the healthcare profession. Keeping a calendar of deadlines and requirements can help you stay organized throughout the process.
Scholarships can significantly reduce student loan debt and increase access to life-changing careers in healthcare. With persistence and planning, future nurses, doctors, and therapists can find the support they need to succeed.

The medical billing process is evolving, introducing changes that affect both healthcare providers and patients alike. A report by Grand View Research projects that the global medical billing outsourcing market will reach $30.2 billion by 2030, driven by the adoption of advanced technologies and regulatory updates. From new regulations like the No Surprises Act, which aims to protect patients from unexpected medical bills to automated billing systems that improve efficiency, these updates are transforming how medical billing is managed.
For providers, this means staying updated on new billing practices, insurance requirements, and compliance standards to ensure accurate claims and
meal preparation, or light housekeeping, while others can provide skilled nursing or dementia care. Be specific about your needs.
4. How Do You Create a Personalized Care Plan?
Good agencies will tailor a care plan based on the client’s needs, preferences, and physician’s recommendations. Ask how often the plan is reviewed and whether you’ll have input during the process.
5. What Is Your Caregiver Replacement Policy?
It’s important to know what happens if your assigned caregiver isn’t a good fit. Will the agency send someone else quickly? How do they handle emergencies or caregiver absences?
6. How Do You Communicate With Families?
timely reimbursements. For patients, understanding their own responsibilities, such as verifying coverage, reviewing bills, and communicating with their providers, can help prevent confusion and unexpected costs. Staying informed ensures smoother collaboration, improved transparency, and better outcomes for everyone involved in the healthcare journey.
Here are some tips:
Healthcare Providers: Invest in robust billing systems that incorporate automation and AI capabilities. Regular training for staff on these technologies will further enhance accuracy.
Patients: Always review your medical bills thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with your insurance policy to ensure that the charges you see align with your coverage.
Communication is Key: Keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding any billing concerns or discrepancies. Prompt discussions can prevent errors from becoming systemic issues.
Automation and AI are transforming medical billing, creating significant benefits for both healthcare providers and patients. These innovations streamline billing processes, improving speed, accuracy, and efficiency while reducing stress for all involved. By adopting these technologies, healthcare professionals can navigate the complexities of the system with greater ease, allowing them to focus on delivering quality care.
7. What Are Your Rates and Billing Practices?
Get clear information about hourly rates, minimum hour requirements, overtime charges, and billing cycles. Also ask whether they accept longterm care insurance or other payment options.
8. Can You Provide References Or Reviews?
A trustworthy agency should be willing to share client testimonials or provide references. You can also check online reviews and ratings to get a better sense of their reputation.
Asking these key questions can help you choose a home care agency that’s professional, reliable, and a great fit for your family’s needs.
You want regular updates, especially if you’re not nearby. Ask how often they’ll communicate with you, what methods they use (phone, email, portal), and who your point of contact will be.
1. B. How close you sit to the television, low light reading, and not wearing your glasses won’t weaken your vision, reports Prevent Blindness America, a nonprofit eye health group. But studies show that breathing cigarette smoke can indirectly damage your eyes.
2. D. B vitamins reduce your light sensitivity. Take 25 to 50 mg of B1, 25 to 100 mg of B2 and 1000 to 2000 mcg of B12 daily.
3. D. The healthy bacteria L. acidophilus in yogurt combats the bacteria that causes conjunctivitis. Eat 1 1/2 cups of yogurt with active cultures daily.

To help reverse this problem, be sure to get enough potassium (500 mg daily), a mineral that metabolizes fluid. Also, take vitamin B complex (50 mg daily). B vitamins, especially folic acid and B6, are crucial for tear production.
5. D. Spinach contains lutein, a plant pigment that prevents macular degeneration. Each day, eat four to eight ounces of cooked Spinach, or take
Routine cleanings, regular evaluations for infections or new pathology, and maintaining basic oral hygiene are essential. Broken teeth at the gum line may not cause acute pain, making a “watch-and-monitor” approach more appropriate than surgical intervention. Surgical extractions, carry risks such as bone loss, poor healing, and increased susceptibility to complications—especially in patients with conditions like diabetes or those taking medications such as blood thinners and cardiac drugs.
Before performing invasive procedures, physician consultations may be necessary. Temporarily discontinuing medications like anticoagulants for dental surgery can pose significant risks, including strokes. In many cases, the risk of complications may outweigh the benefits of extraction, especially when broken teeth are asymptomatic.
Patients with Alzheimer’s or dementia present additional challenges. They may be unaware of post-treatment numbness, leading to accidental injuries such as biting the tongue or cheeks, which can result in severe bleeding. All potential risks and benefits should be carefully weighed before proceeding with treatment for these patients.
Preventive care remains the cornerstone of geriatric oral health. Cleanings every six months—or more frequently,

6. C. Muscle spasms trigger twitches in your eyelids. For relief, take up to 400 mg of magnesium (a known muscle relaxant) twice daily. If a twitch persists, also take 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily.
7. C. It’s crucial to wear sunglasses between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., even on cloudy or winter days. Look for ones that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.
8. D. Antibiotics, aspirin, and oral contraceptives make your eyes sensitive to light. Wear sunglasses if your medication’s label includes a photosensitization warning.
9. B. Taking the zinc doesn’t cause macular degeneration. A recent study published in the Archives of Ophthalmology reported that high doses of zinc (80 mg daily), taken in addition to vitamin C (500 mg), vitamin E (400 IU), and beta carotene (15 mg), slow its progression.
10. A. A qi, or life energy, deficiency in the liver can cause glaucoma, according to traditional Chinese medicine. The Chinese herbal formula hsaio yao wan improves liver energy.

such as every 3–4 months for those with significant health issues or behavioral challenges—are recommended. Regular removal of plaque and biofilm from below the gum line is critical to preventing bacteria from entering the bloodstream, where it can exacerbate conditions like heart disease or dementia. Studies have linked gum disease with the progression of Alzheimer’s, emphasizing the importance of oral hygiene in overall health.
Dry mouth, a common side effect of many medications used to treat cardiac and blood pressure conditions, increases the risk of tooth decay. Additionally, diabetic patients often suffer from gum disease, making routine dental cleanings even more crucial to minimize tartar buildup and inflammation.
Some dentists now offer mobile services, visiting patients in their homes or care facilities to provide cleanings and limited treatment—a valuable option for patients with mobility or behavioral challenges.
Preventive and conservative dental care is essential in maintaining the oral and overall health of the aging population. Prioritizing early detection of infections, use of fluoride treatments, and minimally invasive procedures helps ensure these patients can maintain a healthy diet, stable weight, and a better quality of life.
