This Welcome Home Reception in AAN’s Federal Gallery will be held on Friday, April 25 from 5 to 7pm. The ceremony will begin with a ribbon cutting at 4:30 pm, followed by refreshments and light bites.
“It has been our goal for some time to have one highly-visible flagship gallery in downtown Nantucket,” shared Tracey Sears, AAN Executive Director. This gallery will host a year-round schedule of rotating member shows, artist demonstrations and lectures, and special events. Artistic Director Robert Frazier explains that after renovation, this new location will also feature “increased square footage and a more sophisticated and modern space to display art, offering easy pick-up and drop-off for our artists.”
“As the Artists Association celebrates its 80th anniversary, we are thrilled to build a landmark in the town of Nantucket, our legacy to serve the community for generations to come,” Laurie Champion, Board President, says. “This is an exciting milestone for AAN, and Daffodil Weekend marks the beginning of an action-packed season to come.”
The Federal Gallery is replacing the AAN’s Washington Street gallery and will display a range of works, including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, mixed media, ceramics, and photography.
In addition to this new space, AAN will continue to operate their Big Gallery, upstairs in the Thomas Macy Warehouse at 12 Straight Wharf. From April 25 through May 12, Mellow Yellow, a show depicting signs of spring in shades of yellow, will be exhibited in Big Gallery.
AAN also offers classes and workshops. Tuesday mornings through May 20, they offer a free Family Drop-In session from 10 to 11 am. During this one-hour workshop, kids age 2 to 5 years will build creative skill and confidence in the company of their trusted adults by playing with a variety of materials. AAN also offer one-week Art Camps for children from ages 4-9. Registration for camp sessions and for adult classes is now open at NantucketArts.org

In March of 2011, country singer Trace Adkins released a song called, “She Thinks We’re Just Fishing,” a song written by Casey Beathard, Monty Criswell, and Ed Hill. The song ended up being a top 10 hit for Adkins. More importantly, it welded an immediate bond with so many fathers who related instantly to the song’s video of Adkins fishing with his daughter Trinity, who appeared to be about six years old at the time. My daughters were 14- and 11-years-old when that this song was released. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the song played loudly in my head every time my girls and I hit the ponds or the beaches. A quick YouTube search for this song results in an endless collection of heartwarming father-child fishing videos. It’s a beautiful rabbit hole to fall into, unless you’re trying to complete an article on deadline day. And here we are…
I don’t think that the vast majority of people truly understand the importance of fishing. At the risk of devolving this into a trite “If you know, you know” conversation, let me try to fill in some blanks for those of you who don’t know. Or, better yet, let me encourage you to ask one of your knowledgeable fishing friends to take you out fishing just once. I suspect that the connection will be made!
My buddy Tyler O’Brien posted a great picture on Facebook recently. It was his daughter Natalie on her 17th birthday. Natalie was wearing her waders and a thick sweatshirt, holding her spinning rod, prepared to fish the North Head of the Hummock Pond in a howling wind. Yesterday he posted a picture of the 11 different fishing awards that he and Natalie won in 2024. To paraphrase the last line of the Adkins song, they ain’t only fishing. That father-daughter team shares a bond that was built over hours on so many different shorelines and in every kind of weather, and it’s simply beautiful.
I have a quote hanging on my wall from the Texas poet and musician Ray Wylie Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard’s sage words are included in a little drawing that he did for me to celebrate a sobriety anniversary. His artwork serves to remind me that on the days where my gratitude is higher than my expectations, well, I’ll have a pretty good day. So true, Ray Wylie! So on days like today when I’m dragging, I know that it’s time to get busy on my gratitude list. To start off, I’m extremely continued on page 10

As spring weather finally begins to grace us here on Nantucket, we begin to look for our favorite signs of spring; cherry blossoms, daffodil blooms, spring peeper chorus, osprey returning, and…eels! That’s right, the annual spring migration of young eels is upon us, heralding the start of spring for the island.
The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is a catadromous eel, meaning Atlantic eels spend most of their lives in freshwater or brackish tidal environments, found along the Atlantic coast. They only return to the ocean to spawn and then die. Their unique life cycle, spawning in the Sargasso Sea and migrating through both freshwater and saltwater, has also fueled both fascination and mystery surrounding their origins and behavior. For thousands of years, the origin of the eel and how and where it reproduces bedeviled a long list of thinkers and scientists. Parts of this life cycle (like what exactly happens in the Sargasso Sea) are still a mystery.
We know eels begin life as an egg with the odds of survival decidedly stacked against them. They hatch into willow leaf–shaped larvae (leptocephalus). Through a combination of natural forces, including currents and propulsion, the larvae slowly make their way to coastal waters. Those that survive their ocean journey transform into small, translucent glass eels several inches long. In the spring, glass eels migrate from the sea and enter brooks, streams, and ponds to feed and grow. We don’t often think of Nantucket as having rivers or streams but our estuaries, where the saltwater meets freshwater, serve that same function.
Upon reaching fresh water, the eel larvae gradually develop pigment and are known as “elvers.” After a few more
Linda Loring Nature Foundation
color changes, they reach their final stage as full-grown adults with greenish, yellowish-brown or black-gray bodies with a white bellies and rounded tails. This is the stage most people think of when you say “eel.” Adult eels can live in fresh or brackish water from 5 to 20 years, consuming invertebrates, fishes, and carrion before they reach maturity and respond to a natural signal that it is time to breed. Mature eels, called neshaw by the Wampanoags, physically transform in preparation for their return to the ocean. Their eyes and pectoral fins enlarge, and they become black on the top and silver on the bottom. At this point they return to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and to die.
Eels have long been a part of the Nantucket tradition. They were part of the natural bounty for the Native Americans that first inhabited Nantucket, the Wampanoag. Later, English colonists relied on eels as an important part of their diet. During eel migrations, a series of nets called weirs were constructed in waterways like Madaket Ditch to trap the eels. In fact, Madaket Ditch was dug by Wampanoag and early colonists in an effort to increase fish runs like shad, herring, and eels. The Wampanoag shared their knowledge of these fish with the colonists. In winter, specially designed spears like barbed tridents were thrust through holes in the ice to catch dormant eels when fresh fish was hard to come by.
Fishing for eels has waned in recent decades and fewer people want to eat local eels. Today eels are primarily caught to be used as bait for larger target species. It’s illegal to harvest glass eels in Massachusetts, but fishing for adult eels (bigger than 9 inches) is permitted with a valid license.

I began my dream with weary hands, on borrowed time, on shifting sands. Each stone I stacked, the wind unmade, each step I climbed, the road betrayed.
The dream I bore was never mine, but roots entwined in oak and vine.
And when I stumbled, near defeat, it was their hands that found my feet.
Through trials deep and darkened skies, it’s love that lifts, that fortifies. With hearts aligned, with strength renewed, we rise as many, not as few.
So now I build, no longer lone, on solid ground, on love well-sown. For dreams rise stronger, sure and true, when lifted up by more than you.
It’s ironic to me that when the clocks move forward in March, people say, “spring ahead.” As if longer days mean we’re suddenly moving forward, making progress, gaining time. But in my world, more daylight only means more to do: more grass to cut, more beds to prep, more pruning, more planting, more catching up before the season overtakes me. Dethatch the lawn before the bulbs push through. Prune the red-stem dogwoods before they leaf out. Rake the beds before the daffodils get too tall. I make lists, I make plans, but the days have their own rhythm. The hours slip past, the sun lingers longer, and still, I fall behind.
But maybe falling behind isn’t failure. Maybe it’s just the way of things.
Because the daffodils will bloom and laugh whether or not I cleared last year’s leaves. The dogwoods will swell and burst into color even if I never lifted my pruners. And the crocuses, they are the best reminder of all. They arrive unapologetically, pushing up through thatch and mess, through neglect and delay, and still, they shine. They don’t care about perfection. They don’t care about timelines. They simply grow.
We do what we can, when we can. We prioritize. If I know I want peas in the ground, I make time to plant them. If I can’t decide which variety of lettuce to sow, I wait until next week, the seeds will still sprout just as well. We move with the season, not against it. We make do.
Nantucket is more than an island. It is a rhythm, a breath, a place where the land and sea hold stories in their windswept embrace. The roses climbing over gray shingles, the hedges standing like sentinels along winding roads, the saltpruned landscapes bending but never breaking under the ocean’s pull. This is a place of quiet endurance, shaped by hands that work the soil, trim the hedges, and rake the paths that welcome summer’s return.
I’ve spent my life in these gardens, learning their language, tending to the

rank in the past year. “Tim is a model Scout, just a really good Scout the whole way through. He would listen and then apply what you told him. Then he went on to teach the younger guys what they needed to know. For five years, one kid couldn’t get the fishing merit badge. Tim said, ‘We’re going out tonight.’ And that was that. Tim would simply ask, ‘what do you need me to do?’ That’s his attitude. He had to kick it into high gear to get to Eagle. He’s a real respectful guy.”
Tim traveled with the Zinzer family back to Regina Zinzer’s home country of Brazil. Of course
Tim had to check out the fishing in this new environment. Jason told me, “When we finally got to the farm, Tim immediately had to go to the fishing store. Tim is testing the line, looking at all the gear, figuring it all out. Took him an hour but when they got to the river he caught fish! We went with the fishing guide. Tim caught a 24-inch golden dorado, the king of the river, on his first cast. That’s the one that everyone targets! He caught all five species that day! The next day, Tim and Ben tell me that they’re going out to catch an alligator. Call an hour later – “yeah, we got one!”
Tim has recently taken up fly tying. He jumped into some online classes hosted by fly tying expert Jack Larizadeh. Tim dove into this art with a passion. “I love it - it’s pure imagination!” The normally shy Eagle Scout has posted some cool videos of himself tying up a variety of flies at his fly tying bench (follow Tim on Instagram @timsullivan_23).
Tim likes to stay busy. He worked last summer for the Nantucket Harbormaster: “I ran the Headhunter pump-out boat.” He also served as the first mate on the charter fishing vessel Topspin. Tim is excited about his future at Mass. Maritime and whatever the future holds.
Jason Zinzer sums Tim up as follows: “Tim is a highly adaptable kid. Whatever situation he’s in, he perseveres. He’ll be good whatever he ends up.” No arguments here! Go get ‘em, Tim! And remember –it’s never just about fishing.

landscapes that make Nantucket feel timeless. I know their seasons, their struggles, their small victories. And I know the people who care for them, my crew, my friends, my neighbors.
Some have been here for generations, their roots as deep as the oldest swamp oaks. Others came from far away, drawn to the promise of hard work and a life built with their own two hands. Gardeners, painters, housecleaners, carpenters, artists, nurses...people whose work is woven into the fabric of this island. Without them, the roses would climb unchecked, the hedges would lose their shape, the cobblestones would sit heavy beneath a layer of dust.
But for many of us, the cost of calling Nantucket home is slipping beyond reach.
Rent at Richmond’s Meadows I and II apartments has jumped 20-30% in a single year. Families are doubling up. Workers are commuting from off-island. Some are leaving altogether.
The same hands that plant, paint, clean, and build—the hands that make Nantucket feel like home—are being forced out of it. And it’s not just rent. Everything has become more expensive: materials, fuel, wages. As costs rise, so must the rates for the services that keep Nantucket’s homes and gardens pristine. But there’s a limit to what people will pay. I see it already, some cutting back on maintenance, some choosing the cheapest labor available, regardless of experience or care. And I wonder, what happens when the very things that make Nantucket extraordinary begin to unravel, one small cut at a time?
But I refuse to believe this is the end of the story. Because if there’s one thing I know, it’s that Nantucket is built on resilience. We are a community that finds a way. We patch what’s broken. We stretch what’s left. We share what we can.
The fisherman mends his net instead of buying a new one. The carpenter saves good wood from an old job to fix a neighbor’s fence. The gardener repurposes bricks for a new border rather than tossing them aside.
We make do.
And we can do the same when it comes to keeping our workers, our people,
our community, here. We can create solutions that honor both Nantucket’s history and its future.
Accessory Dwelling Units can provide housing for year-round workers without disrupting the island’s charm. Inclusionary zoning can ensure that new developments set aside affordable housing. Programs like ACK-Now’s Lease to Locals are already turning short-term rentals into long-term homes. Homeowners, business owners, policymakers, we all have a role to play in prioritizing year-round stability over seasonal profit.
This isn’t about changing Nantucket. It’s about preserving what makes it real. The landscapes, the traditions, the community. The feeling of knowing your gardener’s name. Of trusting your house painter. Of seeing familiar faces at the market instead of an endless rotation of strangers.
Nantucket thrives when its people thrive. I look at the gardens I tend, the clients I’ve worked with for years, the employees I consider family, and I know one thing to be true, this island is worth fighting for. The challenges are great, but so is the spirit of this place.
The work we do is never perfect, never finished, never fully caught up. That’s the nature of gardens, and that’s the nature of life. There is always more to do, always something we didn’t get to, always a list of things that should have been done yesterday. But still, the gardens grow.
Still, the daffodils bloom.
Still, the crocuses shine.
Still, the island holds us, and we find a way forward.
Still, we make do.
And that’s what gives me hope.
Because if there’s one thing I know, it’s that we will always find a way to grow.
