A short stroll down Nantucket’s shell-paved Old South Wharf, a jewelry brand with a heartfelt mission has found a perfect home. LOLA®, which stands for “Love One Love All,” has grown from a vacation inspiration to a beloved jewelry company that turns personal stories into meaningful charms and pendants.
The story of LOLA® begins in 2015, during founder and president Lilith Guerrera’s trip to Spain. “While I was on vacation in Spain, I came across a piece of jewelry that I loved,” Guerrera recalls. “It wasn’t only beautiful, but it meant something to me. So I had an idea: what if every pendant I designed could hold a memory or a special message for the person who was wearing it.”

For many of us, Coatue is the sandy stretch we seek out to get away from the rest of Nantucket. Whether by boating across the harbor, kayaking, or traversing the over-sand paths by vehicle, many of us recognize that this place is special. Wild landscapes, nesting bird life, great fishing…it’s a wild place that brings us back in time. Even so, it might also be a place we sometimes take for granted. We might enjoy it for the escape, but how often do you think about how vital this barrier beach is to our island way of life?
The Coatue Wildlife Refuge is a unique and pristine environment which contains more than 395 acres of barrier beach that defines Nantucket Harbor, sheltering it from Nantucket Sound. Collectively, the Coskata-Coatue peninsula is 1,171 acres part of which is Coatue beach. Within the area of Coatue is a diverse mix of habitats, including the barrier beaches and dunes, the marine intertidal, and vegetated uplands. This barrier beach buffers the town and the surrounding infrastructure from intense storms and wave energy. It is the narrow band of vegetated sand that keeps the harbor waters calm and provides protection for our harbor and the land to the south.
When we think of barrier beaches, offshore sand islands sometimes come to mind. These barrier beaches typically run parallel to the shoreline. For most of the US, that means they run north-south. Think of the Outer Banks, NC or Assateague Island, VA. These beaches act as natural barriers, absorbing the energy of waves and storms, thus protecting the mainland and its associated ecosystems.
On Nantucket, our barrier beach is unique in that it runs diagonally west to east, curving northward towards Coskata and Great Point. This orientation is parallel to the two opposing wind directions, the dominant northeast and prevailing southwest, which results in the unique shape of this landform. Anyone drawing a quick sketch of Nantucket (even our kindergarteners at Nantucket Elementary School) includes the tip of Great Point followed by the long peninsula with teeth along the bottom. These “teeth” or points are the cuspate spits of Coatue.
Cuspate spits are curved projections of beach into the enclosed harbor shaped by wind and wave action. The cuspate foreland is the north side of the barrier beach open to the ocean that gets the brunt of the wind and wave action. Coatue’s southern shore has six curved sandy points or “spits.” Viewed from above, they look like a serrated knife or the edges of a scallop shell. The foundation of the Nantucket barrier beach system, including these cuspate spits, was laid more than 20,000 years ago by sand deposits from glaciers.
It has been said that “The sand resembles the rhythm of waves,” and that’s not too far from the truth. The cuspate spits are a product of the interplay between wind, waves, and tidal action. There are three key coastal processes that work together to create and maintain the cuspate spits. The first is an ample supply of sand. The second is the harbor’s long axis alignment with seasonal wind and wave action. The long axis of the harbor is parallel to two opposing wind directions, the dominant northeast and prevailing southwest, causing nearly equal longshore transport of sand in opposite directions.
The third, and perhaps most unique aspect is the “tidal amplitude.” The specific tidal amplitude in Nantucket Harbor—low enough to form barrier beaches but high enough to erode spit tips—is crucial for the creation and maintenance of these formations. This trifecta of conditions maintains the spits at equilibrium. They each depend on the other in a self-organized system.
In his 1975 paper studying Nantucket’s cuspate spits, Peter Rosen described the formation:
“Sediment is eroded from each of the concavities between the cuspate spits and transported to the spit ends, where it is deposited as subaqueous bars. These bars are eroded by the tidal currents, which act as the destructive agent of the cuspate spit-shoreline reorientation process. The tidal currents and opposing longshore drift have resulted in an abrasional shoreline approaching dynamic equilibrium.”
To put it plainly, sand is eroded from the curves and deposited on the points. In contrast, tidal currents flowing in and out of the harbor erode sand from the points and deposit it back into the bends. These opposing forces have been in

American society was simply not prepared for the impact of the movie Jaws when it arrived 50 years ago. Nope, never saw it coming. Producer Steven Spielberg caught lightning in a bottle and just like that Jaws became the highest grossing movie in history (until another Spielberg flick called “Star Wars” showed up in 1977).
I was a 14 year old kid when Jaws hit the big screen at the Dreamland Theater. I remember how obsessed we all were with all things “Jaws.” The cool summer kids would recite the little bit of memorable dialogue: “It’s a tiger shark,” followed by, “A what???” Try as I did, I couldn’t get the cool effect that those guys did. Oh yeah, those fun teenage years…
Being the geek that I have always been, and working near The Hub (delivery boy for Nantucket Pharmacy – riding my bike all around the downtown area, dropping off controlled substances), I read everything I could about the big time shark movie that was filmed just one major island away from my home. There was a quick-to-market book that dished all about the movie: struggles of filming in the Atlantic Ocean with a mechanical shark that was somehow allergic to salt water, visa problems with one of the main cast members (Robert Shaw) and other logistics nightmares. Oddly enough, the book left out the drunken poetry ravings of that same star and the cocaine binges of another (all revealed many years later in an off Broadway production called “The Shark is Broken”). Hey, it was 1975, ok? No internet yet – the struggle was real!
It aggravated me to discover that Peter Benchley, the author of the book adapted for the Jaws screenplay, had envisioned Nantucket as the mythical Amity Island, not our stinking rivals to the northwest! Of course I read Benchley’s book – yikes! There was some racy stuff going on in there that didn’t quite make it to the big screen. Mrs. Brody sneaking around with Matt Hooper? Wowza – that was some crazy stuff for a 14 year old to digest!
Sharks took a beating after this movie came out, of course. Every type of fish with a prominent dorsal fin was being killed for no good reason other than the subconscious sound of the John Williams movie soundtrack (da-DUM, da-DUM!).
Poor Peter Benchley felt guilt about having inadvertently starting this snowball down the hill that turned into sharknado avalanche. Mr. Benchley dedicated a good portion of his life to shark preservation, reminding everyone how vital sharks are to our ecosystem.
So here we are now, 50 years post-Jaws. How’s our relationship with those toothy critters going? I decided to check in with some people who know a lot more than I do about such things. Charter Captain Brian Borgeson has a unique perspective on the shark world. Brian’s charter boat has an elevated control tower that allows him to see a lot more sea life than those at water level. I asked him if he’s seeing more or fewer sharks around this year. He told me, “Guys like me and Mark [Charter Captain Mark Genthner] who sit up high see them all the time. It’s fun to see them. Yeah, we lose some fish to them. Up in the Monomoy area (the shoals off of Chatham, not the village by Polpis), there was one Great White that would be there year after year, ripping our striped bass off the lines. It’s part of the deal.”
I asked Captain Brian how his charter customers reacted. “They love it! The kids go crazy when they get to see a shark. It makes their whole trip. When a shark takes your fish and all you get is the severed head, it’s life changing. When a seal does the same thing, it makes you crazy.”
No argument here, Brian! I got to test this theory last week when my client, Kevin Mahoney, hooked up on a nice bluefish up on Coatue. I ran to place my fishing rod into a holder and was heading to assist him when KA-BOOM! A big explosion of white water, followed by another. Kevin and I watched in amazement as a brown shark chomped down on his bluefish, breaking the line. It happened about 50 feet from the beach. Kevin told me, “I’m not used to catching anything and had only had my first ever catch an hour earlier, so I had nothing to compare it to. I actually thought for a moment that I had caught the shark! This was an unforgettable adventure!” I agree, Kevin and even though it was the same result,

August on Nantucket means beach days, boat rides, and backyard barbecues. But for some food-driven folks, August means one thing—local corn season.
For a few short weeks, freshly picked ears pile high at Moors End and Bartlett’s Farm, and if you’ve spent any time here, you know that Nantucket corn lovers are fiercely loyal. Bartlett’s devotees shop the corn table every time they visit, even if they only meant to stop for coffee, while Moor’s End loyalists swear theirs is the best on the island.
Everyone has their own theory about what makes island-grown corn so delicious. Maybe it’s the salty air, the unique sandy soils, or just the magic of August that makes everything taste better. Whatever the reason, a just-picked ear of Nantucket corn is a thing of perfection. During my years working at Bartlett’s, the tradition was to eat the first ear of the season raw, right there on the loading dock—surrounded by smiling coworkers, silent except for the sound of sweet kernels popping and crunching with each bite.
Traditionalists (like myself) need little more than butter and salt, but recently, I was introduced to a new take that rocked my traditionalist world (and taste buds). At a recent gathering, islander Aishu Mangala shared her mother’s Chili Lime Garlic Butter recipe, and to say it left an impression is a serious

Watching the audience arrive to the breezy courtyard at the Nantucket Performing Arts Center on opening night, I felt happy. A palpable energy permeated the air as director Mark Shanahan rolled up on his bicycle, then mingled with several ticket holders. In the mood for laughter, everyone seemed relaxed and ready for a good time.
Simply put, Theatre People, or the Angel Next Door provides a delightful ending to any day of the week. In fact, Theatre People could kickstart a serious conversation about theater itself, though it surely aims for something else: to provide a reprieve from the outside world. It definitely delivers.

equilibrium for hundreds of years, creating a world-class example of the rare geologic feature that has improved scientists’ understanding of coastal ecology. This formation is so unique that coastal scientists around the world study our six cuspate spits, which are also lauded for being free of development or engineering. A lasting cuspate spit formation is so unusual, it is only found in one other place in the world: in the Chukchi Sea lagoons of northeastern Russia, though these formations differ with the cuspate points pointing northward.
The cuspate spits of Nantucket persist as they are allowed to follow natural patterns and processes. That now begs the question; what if these processes are disrupted? It is speculated that loss or disruption to any part of the process will alter the existence of this rare coastal feature.
The cuspate spits are so unusual, in fact, that in 2024 the Coatue-Coskata complex, which also includes Great Point, was deemed a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. The Nantucket cuspate spit series are considered “globally rare.” Already protected by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Trustees of Reservations, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, this National recognition further protects the habitats and encourages more research and understanding of the geological heritage.
According to the National Park Service, landscapes are chosen for this recognition because of their “outstanding condition, illustrative character, rarity, diversity, and value to science and education.” Having this designation could also help NCF and the Trustees with potential grant funding in the future. With the threat of sea level rise, increased storms, and storm surge, more may need to be done to protect the vital and unique habitats. A potential breach of this system could have devastating consequences for the Town and for our way of life.
Nantucket’s cuspate spits offer a tangible link to our dynamic geological past and continue to play a crucial role in shaping its present and future.
For more information about this unique habitat and the potential threats, check out the 2024 video, Coskata-Coatue: A Refuge on the Edge found online at nantucketconservation.org/what-we-protect/properties/coatue/
Delafield) and the fate of a novel he’s written about his muse, Margot Bell (Emily Fink). Playwrights Charlotte (Jacqueline Antaramian) and Arthur Sanders (Richard R. Henry) hope their adaptation of his novel will translate into Broadway success.
Meanwhile Margot’s affection for a dimwitted baritone Victor Pratt (John Rapson) seeps through the thin walls of a Newport mansion where they have all gathered for the weekend. Leave it to plucky housekeeper Olga (Amy Jo Jackson) to cut through the ensuing hijinks with perfect posture and a dodgy accent.
Like Russian nesting dolls, Theatre People contains parallel stories that unfold in two acts. Oliver’s situation in act one revolves mainly around whether to sign a publishing contract. Since he hasn’t shown his manuscript to Margot, “publish or perish” takes on farcical dimensions.
Indeed, Oliver’s earnest naïveté and smitten typewritten love letter to Margot are oddly refreshing to see and hear. Because Theatre People takes place in the 1940s, there is exactly one copy of his novel: the original. But when he realizes his love is painfully unrequited, Oliver shreds the publishing contract and shoves it down his throat.
Of course, Charlotte and Arthur have everything to lose if Oliver’s manuscript is lost, let alone never produced. Therefore, while Ollie is ingesting the contract, our playwrights grab hold of the novel’s manuscript to protect it from his jaws. Naturally, Ollie is mortified when he understands Margot’s lust for Victor obviates his entire creative effort. Indeed the physical comedy Delafield puts into his whole achy, breaky heart had the entire house howling.
Soon thereafter, Charlotte crafts a plan to salvage the artistic work she and Arthur have already poured into Oliver’s feelings. And nowhere else in the play is witty repartee more alive than between these two stage veterans. Arthur is a realist who cuts to the chase and distrusts happy endings, while Charlotte is a pragmatist who will save the day. Antaramian and Henry ooze skillful chemistry that holds everything together.
Emily Fink’s Margot Bell transforms into a likable person by the second act,
because she is definitely not the angel next door in the first act. The way Fink pulls this off reveals the essence of theater people.
On the other hand, Olga’s observations enhance everyone else’s lines, given how she tries to follow the drama, the comedy, and the absurdity of it all. Her character ultimately comes to appreciate theater people in all their unique glory by the end of the play. And not for nothing, I totally envision Jackson starring in a production of this year’s Tony Award winning best play, “Oh, Mary!”
For his part, Victor Pratt is a lascivious man repeatedly mocked for his lack of intelligence by everyone else on stage. Of course this character seems so familiar in America 2025. And credit to Rapson’s hot take on what this looks and sounds like: foolishness the likes of which we now see everyday.
Theatre People, or the Angel Next Door demonstrates the joyful power of witty repartee, one of my favorite things. It also perfectly reflects the moment we live in, where rewriting reality has become a silly routine. See it for yourself, laugh along with total strangers.
Sarah Wright embraces theater for its live performance art, storytelling, & shared experience.

the wharf and the character of the retail shacks. That’s when the idea of the Love Shack was born.”
The location perfectly captures the brand’s aesthetic. “The retail store fronts on Old South Wharf are old fishing shacks,” Guerrera explains. “Our store is casual, beachy, and reminiscent of those times.” Visitors can find “our entire line of LOLA jewelry and we also have t-shirts, sweatshirts, candles, and other home items that play on the Love Shack name,” according to Brewer.
For a remembrance of a Nantucket weekend, Brewer recommends their most popular local piece: “Most definitely our Nantucket Island pendant, in gold & silver!”
Among LOLA®’s most beloved pieces are their coastal-inspired pendants. “The most iconic design here on the island is our line of Nantucket pendants. We offer the island and a Nantucket basket pendant,” Brewer shares. “But our entire line of coastal pendants such as the oyster shell, sand dollar, and starfish, are also very popular.”
When asked about personally meaningful pieces, both Laura and Lilith have favorites. “I love the daisy pendant,” said Brewer. “The design is reminiscent of my nana.” Guerrera says she cannot pick just one: “I love our new line of tag pendants as well as our original Horseshoe pendant, which brings good luck!” she said.
LOLA® has exciting developments on the horizon. “We have TWO exciting new collections that we will be launching this Fall,” Guerrera revealed. “I can't give you any details yet, but the collections were well-received at the Atlanta market when we showed them to our customers & retail partners.”
As for the future, the possibilities seem endless: “Honestly, the sky is the limit,” said Brewer enthusiastically. “But we will always call our little Love Shack on Old South Wharf our original home.”
In a world where jewelry can often feel impersonal, LOLA® stands out by returning to the fundamental human desire for connection and meaning. Through thoughtfully designed pieces that carry personal stories and heartfelt messages, Guerrera and Brewer have created more than just accessories—they’ve crafted wearable reminders of relationships and moments that matter most.

understatement. I am lover of all things garlicky and buttery so this recipe quickly became part of my regular grilled corn rotation.
“I grew up in Illinois, so there was always corn at the table during the summer,” says Aishu. “My mother used to make this chili lime garlic butter for the corn—definitely flavors inspired by her home country of India. We put garlic and cayenne in everything.”
Aishu’s Mom’s Chili Lime Garlic Butter
2 sticks salted butter, softened 4-5 cloves garlic, minced or crushed in a mortar and pestle
2 tablespoons cayenne powder (adjust to taste if you prefer less spice)
Juice of one lime
Makes enough for 1 dozen ears of corn.
Mix softened butter, minced or crushed garlic, and cayenne in a bowl with a spatula until well incorporated. Whisk in lime juice until smooth. Season with more salt if desired. Grill ears of corn on the cob and then slather with cooled chili butter. Sprinkle with cilantro or chopped basil for color. Enjoy!
Here are two more recipes to try for those wishing to branch out from the traditional.
Mexican Street Corn (Elote)
This beloved street food staple is slathered in creamy, tangy goodness and finished with a sprinkle
of cotija cheese and chili powder. It also makes a great side dish with corn sliced off the cob and mixed with these ingredients.
6 ears corn, husked
½ cup mayonnaise
½ cup sour cream
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ cup crumbled cotija cheese
Juice of one lime
Chopped cilantro for garnish
Grill corn until slightly charred.
Mix mayonnaise, sour cream, and lime juice in a bowl. Slather the mixture onto the hot corn. Sprinkle with chili powder, cotija cheese, and cilantro. Serve immediately and be transported south of the border!
Thai Coconut Grilled Corn
This version brings the tropics to you. Exotic coconut milk and the umami punch of fish sauce are tempered by a pinch of sugar and bright lime juice. Sprinkle with chili flakes or chopped cilantro for a really fresh and delicious twist.
6 ears corn, husked
1 can (13.5 oz) coconut milk
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
Juice of one lime
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) ¼ c chopped cilantro (optional)
Mix coconut milk, fish sauce, sugar, and lime juice in a bowl. Brush the mixture onto the corn before grilling. Grill until slightly charred, brushing with more coconut mixture as it cooks. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes for a touch of heat before serving.

the shark taking the fish was so much cooler than a seal doing the same thing.
A recent post by my childhood friend and fellow beach fisher Chuck Duce showed a nice brown shark that had latched on to Chuck’s striped bass lure as he was fishing on the south shore one night last week. Chuck’s caption read, in part, “That hurt!” I asked Chuck about his experience with sharks while fishing at night. “This was the second shark ever that I caught and got to the beach on light tackle. Every year I usually come across one or two that either take half of my fish or just completely spool me (stripping all the line off of the reel) and send me home cursing. The sharks have been there a lot longer than I have, and they own the house. I’m just grateful that I can enjoy the water and the nighttime with them.” Chuck has always been a wise man.
I asked Chuck what he remembers about the movie Jaws, seeing as we’re almost the same age. He recalled the following: “We were coming back from a Little League game on the Vineyard, and we passed the boat that was towing in the mechanical shark from Jaws. It was in a crate. The movie was one of my favorites, and I don’t think I went out in the water past my waist for a year after that!” Same here, buddy!
How rational is this fear of sharks? Well, not very. Captain Brian told me, “I have clients, people who own houses here, who won’t go in the water. It’s a crazy misguided fear. I tell them that you’re more likely to have a piano land on your head than be at-
tacked by a shark. Sharks are a vital part of the ocean.”
My friend Doug Lindley is a very cool guy. He flies a small Piper Super Cub airplane (check him out on Instagram @44_zulu) that allows him to fly low and
slow for a long time. Doug spots fish for a variety of harpoon boats who are featured on the Discovery Channel show, “Harpoon Hunters.” Doug can fly, communicate with the boats on the radio, and take

Doug told me, “I’ve seen a decline in the number of Great Whites around the Cape and Islands for the past two years. According to the pings from the tagged sharks, they’re moving up to the Gulf of Maine or even as far north as Nova Scotia. Brown sharks are everywhere around the island. At any given time you’ll see a bunch in Great Point rip or on the shoals. I’m also seeing a lot of giant rays everywhere this year. It seems that the seal population has declined a bit in Monomoy and the Nauset area. Maybe they’ve gotten smarter and are staying on the inside bars where the big sharks can’t go. Same thing at Great Point. Not sure if it’s the sharks, but the numbers seem smaller.”
I tend to give sharks of all sorts a good leaving alone. But some of my friends fish for them and quite enjoy catching and releasing sharks. When Tyler O’Brien and his friend Logan Mead were up at Great Point last week, I saw that they were hooked into something big that was giving them a hard time. I watched for a few minutes before moving on in pursuit of bluefish. I asked Tyler the next day what they had landed. He sent me a picture of a monstrous rough tail ray. “It was about six feet across!” Tyler got a great picture of Logan with the behemoth before they safely released it.
Please note the key word mentioned – SAFELY! My friends who fish for sharks take great efforts to ensure that both they and the shark are safe after their interactions. Yes, we’ve all seen the video of the unfortunate guy who was bitten on the lower leg when releasing a brown shark. Lessons learned, right?
Jaws was a great movie in the manner that it made an irrational fear seem rational. As Alfred Hitchcock said about suspense: “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.” So let go of that anticipation and enjoy the wonderful water, folks! You’re not going to end up like little Alex Kintner —there’s my cool Jaws reference...take that, you cool summer kids!

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.
