Old-Fashioned Fun at the Nantucket Fair

As summer draws to a close and autumn begins to paint our island landscape, one September tradition marks the changing of the seasons: the Nantucket Island Fair. This community gathering brings together residents and visitors for a weekend of old-fashioned entertainment, local flavor, and island camaraderie.

The fair is being held this year on September 13 and 14 from 10 am to 4 pm each day at Tom Nevers Field, along the south shore of Nantucket. The wide open space there provides plenty of room for plenty of fun (and parking). Fair admission for a carload is $30; fairgoers who bike or walk to the fair pay $15 each. Volunteers who help set up, run, and take down the fair are admitted free of charge. Anyone interested in helping can sign up by sending an email to nantucketislandfairvolunteers@gmail.com

Community gatherings and fairs have long been part of Nantucket's social fabric, reflecting our island’s tight-knit community spirit. The first Nantucket Island Fair was held in the mid-1800s in the Nantucket Atheneum to celebrate the harvest and strengthen the island’s agricultural economy. Arie L. Kopelman Honored by NHA

The Nantucket Historical Association is proud to honor Arie L. Kopelman with the official naming of the Whaling Museum’s Scrimshaw and Decorative Arts Gallery, Arie L. Kopelman Gallery, in his honor. Kopelman’s passion for decorative arts and Nantucket history, as well as his tremendous support of the Nantucket Historical Association over his lifetime, all culminated in this fitting honor in his remembrance.

“Early last fall, Arie and I spent considerable time talking about his passion for the NHA and a gift that he and his wife, Coco, were considering. As we reached an understanding, with no detail left to chance, the Arie L. Kopelman Gallery came to be. He envisioned it to be the permanent home to the finest examples of Nantucket Decorative Arts, including scrimshaw, weathervanes, trade signs, and, of course, his beloved Windsor chairs displayed side by side,” said Past NHA Board of Trustees President Annabelle Fowlkes. “It was an absolute pleasure and an honor to know him as a friend and fellow board President. I am so glad that he knew this vision would come to life, and I only wish he were here to celebrate with us... His passion, commitment, leadership, and generosity to the NHA are missed, but will now be memorialized in the museum he helped build.”

Fishing After the Storm

Hurricanes make for wonderful metaphors but lousy forecasts. Hurricane Erin came a’ creeping up the east coast and ruined a lot of late August plans. Number one on my list was the Derby Day fishing event, wisely cancelled out of an abundance of caution. High winds, rip currants, and huge ocean swells are not conducive to a great family beach day. On the bright side, some of the surfing pictures and videos that came from the southern shores of Nantucket are flatout amazing. The good with the bad, right?

Storm systems tend to get my little pea of a brain wandering. I spent altogether too much time this past week pondering what hurricane songs are the best. I always loved Bob Dylan’s The Hurricane, a song about Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, the middleweight boxer and convicted triple murderer. Did he do it? Was he railroaded by a racist justice system? Does this song even involve weather? Lots of debate, for sure, but certainly a fantastic Dylan song. Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season by Jimmy Buffett floats whimsically along, a long-time favorite of mine; Rock You Like a Hurricane by the Scorpions – meh. Never was much of a hair band guy. Hurricane by Band of Heathens, written by the great Levon Helm about a storm bearing down on New Orleans, has a foreboding darkness that I can’t resist, and Hurricane by Luke Combs is Country’s best storm offering by far – well written, catchy and country cool. But the best of them all has to be Neil Young’s Like a Hurricane. Oh, that haunting guitar riff! And that line about the calm in her eyes...yessir, I get so blown away by this song!

Alright, enough of that. What’s going on with our beaches due to Erin? As suspected, the massive storm surge closed Great Point down for a time. The Trustees of Reservations posted this update on Friday, August 22: “The Refuge will remain closed to the public on Saturday, 8/23 and Sunday, 8/24, due to costal erosion along the east-facing beach and flooding on the Refuge access trail caused by Hurricane Erin. This closure will give staff time to address storm-related conditions and ensure a safe reopening.” This notice was updated on August 24 to include closure to vehicles on August 25, stating “High tide inundation continues along our east-facing shoreline. There is no driving corridor. The erosion has caused a slope that is difficult to drive. These conditions present safety concerns for visitors and threaten the health of the barrier beach ecosystem.” [Text CCWRTTOR to (888)313-1761 for real time beach updates.]

The Trustees staff does a great job of keeping their patrons informed. Gotta love that, right? So what’s happening in Madaket, you ask? Um, yeah, tough to say. I’ve heard through my fishing grapevine that it’s closed for now [as of press date]. That isn’t unexpected; maybe the Town will let us know. Maybe not. I guess the best we can do for now is park out by The Crooked House and enjoy the lovely view of the wind farm until further notice.

Historically, our eastern and westernmost points tend to take a drubbing in hurricanes. Let’s travel back in time to late September of 1961 to revisit Hurricane Esther. Esther was pretty much a direct hit on Nantucket. It opened a channel between the tip of Smith’s Point in Madaket and the rest of Nantucket, thus forming Esther’s Island. That became the new normal for the next 25 or so years, until the wayward island made its amends with Nantucket and rejoined us. I recall fishing at Smith’s Point, casting towards Esther’s Island. The expanse between the two places then seemed to have been similar to the distance currently between Tuckernuck and the new (old) tip of Smith’s Point. It’s hard to envision the give and take of nature could change the landscape that much in such a short time but there it is!

As for Great Point, that skinny peninsula has been adjusted by Mother Nature from time to time as well. Amy Jenness, writing for the September 8, 2016 edition of Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket, reported the following: “Hurricane Bob approached the island in late August 1991. Bob was one of the smallest storms in area size, yet was one of the most intense to hit southern New England since 1938. Bob brought a tidal surge that was 10 feet above normal and several Cape Cod weather watchers reported unofficial gusts of 150 mph.

Two months later, on October 30, the most destructive storm ever to hit Nantucket landed. It has no official name, but has been called the “No Name Storm” and “The Perfect Storm.” It began as a nor’easter and evolved into a hurricane.”

Yikes! The No Name Storm even turned the tip of Great Point into an island for about five months. Jenness added, “At one point the gap between Great Point and Nantucket was a quarter mile wide and six feet deep. Shifting sands eventually filled it and reconnected it to the island.”

Island Drought Calls for Water Conservation

Summer on Nantucket is coming to an end. Usually at this time of year I try to hold on to summer. Phenologically, September is still part of the growing season, and it’s peak time for many of our wildflowers. That’s what I usually say. This year, however, is a bit different. We’re starting to see fall colors in August (!), plants going dormant earlier than usual, and some things withering before our eyes—more typical late fall activity.

What’s going on? We’re seeing and feeling the impact of our sustained drought.

We first discussed the drought on-island back in June, when the Level 1 drought was first declared. Nantucket County, including Nantucket main island, Tuckernuck, and Muskeget, has now been in a Level 1 drought since June of this year. Technically it is a “low level drought,” but it has been sustained for two months, so the effects on our habits are more pronounced. Interestingly, our sister island of Martha’s Vineyard is at normal conditions and has been for some time, while the Cape Cod region is still under Level 2 or “significant drought” conditions.

What does that mean for Nantucket?

Drought is a lack of cumulative conditions over time. Not only is the vegetation dry and crispy, but when we look at the data, we see well below normal rainfall. That, coupled with higher-than-normal summer temperatures, have led to the drought declaration.

From a practical and human stand point, it has meant water use restrictions and limitations for those on Town water. After months of drought conditions, it can mean depleted water supplies. Groundwater, freshwater wetlands, and ponds are significantly lower than normal. We can restrict water use like lawn watering and shorter showers, but what about our open space? How are our ecosystems experiencing these conditions?

Foundation

At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF), we record precipitation as part of two national programs: CoCoRaHS (the Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network) and we serve as a COOP Station for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). You can see a summary of our CoCoRaHS data at dex.cocorahs.org/stations/MA-NT-1/precip-summary. For this past summer, June was only at 23% of the 30-year norm, July at 31%, and August 35%. We will see what September brings, but much of the impact has already been felt by our vegetation.

What you might see when going on a walk in open space is bright fall colors. But it’s still summer…yes, the huckleberry, low-bush blueberry, and poison ivy have all started to go into premature dormancy—first turning red then brown. Similarly, many of our fall asters and goldenrods have bolted and turned brown: withered. It seems like many of these plants may not flower this season, instead deciding to conserve valuable resources. Our native species growing in sandy soils are used to limited water resources, but continued drought stress can inhibit photosynthesis which can lead to stunted plant growth or lower reproduction. One year of this kind of stress might not have a great effect on overall populations, but if this trend continues, we could see some deleterious effects on plant populations. Stressed plants are also weakened and, thus, are more susceptible to disease and opportunistic pests.

Drought can also lead to more soil erosion because the lack of water stresses plants, reducing vegetative cover and weakening the soil’s ability to resist wind and water. Dry soils can be eroded through wind. When soils are so dry, they can have a more difficult time absorbing water when it does fall. We need sustained precipitation to fully moisturize the soil.

Widows’ Walks

As you walk through the streets of Nantucket you will see surrounding the chimneys of several houses seven- to eight-foot wooden platforms with wooden railings. These platforms are often called “widows’ walks”—a term which conjures up images of women in long skirts and bonnets gazing forlornly toward the harbor. You can picture them drawing their shawls tightly about their shoulders and bracing themselves against the wind as they search the horizon for a sail that might bring a beloved husband home safely after years at sea.

As romantic and appealing as this image may be, the roofwalks, as they are properly called, had more practical purposes. They were places of observation, but they were primarily used by sailors, not by their wives. And, while wives (and other family members) may have occasionally used these platforms to see if a loved-one’s ship had returned, widows had little reason to do that.

Houses built on Nantucket during the 18th century had few windows, but from the roof captains could see which ships were arriving and departing, and they determine how the preparations for their next voyages were progressing.

Historian and author E.K. Godfrey in 1882 explained that earlier that century, during the height of the whaling era on Nantucket, roofwalks were common. Before that, most people had gained access to their roofs by a trapdoor called a “scuttle” next to the chimney, which was also used by chimney sweeps and for greater ease in extinguishing chimney fires.

According to Godfrey, the walks first appeared on the homes of the “well-todo,” who found the scuttle cramped for even one person to observe the town. A walk provided ample room for the whole household to observe the town’s activity from the roof if they so desired.

Many of the walks were constructed during the 1700s; in later centuries cupolas became more fashionable and were built instead. As the whaling industry of Nantucket declined, many of the walks fell into disrepair and were removed.

fruits, and “fancy articles,” along with about 60 animals at a nearby empty lot. Entertainment included performances by the Nantucket Brass Band and rides in a whaleboat mounted on wheels. The fair “proved so popular that it was held open for two additional days.”

This year, the Nantucket Island Fair’s schedule is packed with activities that appeal to all ages. At press time, organizers were still finalizing the schedule. According to nantucketislandfair.com, activities on both fair days include Ray’s Barnyard, a scavenger hunt, disc golf demonstrations, scarecrow building, and a dunk tank. Games and contests will also be held both days: sack races, skillet toss, eggand-spoon race, watermelon eating contests, hot pepper eating contests, and cupcake eating contests.

In the Community Tent, fairgoers will be able to stroll around Gertrude’s Farm Stand to view the contest winners (baked goods, canned goods, and Tar Roof Cake), community exhibitors, and local artisans. On Saturday, Mary Malavase will host Daffodils-a-Plenty from 11 am to 1 pm, and on Sunday at 1 pm Anne Maury will be demonstrating flower arranging.

Ticket will be sold to the Kids’ Corner, with activities designed specifically for younger fairgoers such as a tie-dye booth, pumpkin painting, face painting, pumpkin ring toss, fish bowl pong, can knock down games, and the ever-popular “ducky pluck.”

NanPuppets will offer a show Saturday at 11:15 am, and on both days local music groups will provide a soundtrack to the festivities. On Sunday at 10 am, register four-legged friends may be registered for the Cold Noses Dog Show that will be held at 12 noon.

The Nantucket Island Fair offers an opportunity for island residents and visitors to enjoy the warmth, character, and timeless appeal that make Nantucket a special place. As the organizers note, it’s about “making memories”—and in the community setting of Tom Nevers Field, with the Atlantic Ocean nearby and the island community gathered together, those memories are sure to be treasured for years to come.

The Nantucket Island Fair operates as a charitable fund of the Community Foundation for Nantucket.

Arie L. Kopelman (1938-2024) was a devoted lifelong summer resident of Nantucket and a passionate steward of American history and culture. His deep commitment to the island’s heritage was most notably reflected in his tenure as President of the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) from 2000 to 2003, the Whaling Museum building committee from 2000 to 2005, the acquisitions committee for 10 years, and alongside his beloved wife Coco, Friends of the NHA members for over 25 years.

Outside of his professional life, the world of American antiques and preservation was Kopelman’s other true passion. As NHA President, Kopelman led the ambitious and successful campaign to revitalize the Nantucket Whaling Museum, a project he considered the “crown jewel” in its fleet of properties. Rallying a coalition of like-minded summer residents, he spearheaded the $24.5 million fundraising effort that enabled a complete renovation of the museum. It reopened to the public in 2005 as a state-of-the-art tribute to the island’s maritime legacy. Beyond his leadership at the NHA, Arie was an avid collector, and served for more than 25 years as Chairman of the Winter Antiques Show in New York, where his vision and guidance were instrumental in cementing the show’s celebrated focus on American decorative arts.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, the Arie L. Kopelman Gallery celebrates his enduring love for Americana—especially scrimshaw, weathervanes, and important historic antiques—and honors a legacy rooted in beauty, craftsmanship, and an abiding reverence for the past. The Nantucket Historical Association thanks the Kopelman family for their gracious support in Arie’s honor and invites visitors to enjoy this newly named gallery space, open during Whaling Museum hours (daily from 10 am to 5 pm through Oct. 13; then Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm): learn more at NHA.org.

Fishing After the Storm

for songs! And me worrying about the storms in our lives isn’t going to change much at all. The ultimate answer is that we all have to have faith. Yes, indeed. And yet, one important question remained: where could I go fishing in this postErin mess?

Modern technology came to my rescue. My buddy Dave Small hit me up, reporting that there was no room available on the north shore on that Saturday afternoon. The beach was packed with folks grabbing at one of the last weekends of the summer. I’m not sure if that beach still has the “rich dude area” blocked off or not, and it hurts my heart to ask. Dave’s report also indicated that no fish were being caught, so I crossed that spot off the dwindling list. Shortly thereafter, I received a text from my niece, Meri Lepore. She told me that her eight-yearold son Henry had caught a huge striped bass at Point O’ Breakers. That was what I wanted to hear! I threw a couple of fishing rods into my truck and headed that way.

Henry and his dad Matt Peele were having the best day ever (that’s a Spongebob reference for a lot of you). Henry gave me a big hug and told me excitedly about his fish. “I didn’t think I could reel it in! It was so strong!” Matt told me that he had thrown a bottom rig out for Henry, hoping to perhaps catch a dogfish. A big ol’ striper had found the hunk of squid to be irresistible. Henry saw the line screaming off the reel, set the drag and hooked the fish. It was a beauty, fitting just into the slot size. Henry had caught dinner and he couldn’t have been more proud!

Matt and Henry were exactly what I needed on that post-Erin Saturday. I didn’t take a single cast. I didn’t need to. Sharing a little time with Matt and Henry reminded me that storms will pass and life will return to normal. It was just what I needed. Who knows, maybe there’s a song in there somewhere.

Don’t Call Them Widows’ Walks

Calling the platforms “widows’ walks” evidently began on the mainland. An article from the Boston Transcript from the 1920s states that “widows’ walk” is a “city term.” It also states that “the old people, the people who know and love Nantucket better than the passing vacationists, still cling to the walk whenever they have occasion to use the word.”

It is a peculiar term since widows had the least use for walks of anyone. In his 1925 opening address to the Nantucket Historical Association, President William F. Macy strongly protested against the growing use of the terms “widows’ walks” or “captains’ walks” or any other “modifications of the original name for the platforms on the roofs of many Nantucket houses. As all good Nantucketers know, they are just plain ‘walks,’ and were never called anything else until quite recently.” Macy then appealed to everyone at the meeting to “make a point of correcting anyone who called them otherwise.”

So, call them “walks” or call them “roofwalks,” but please, don’t call them “widows’ walks.”

Our wetlands are also feeling the effect. When ponds and wetlands are drawn down, it also concentrates the remaining water which can become stagnant. Stagnant water deteriorates water quality. This summer has also had record high temperatures. Warm, stagnant water is a breeding ground for algal blooms leading to multiple harmful algal blooms (HABs) this summer as reported by the Town of Nantucket and collaborating organizations (nantucket-ma.civilspace.io/en/projects/harmful-algal-blooms-monitoring-program).

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The reduced water levels have opened up one unique habitat that is typically under water. Pond draw-down has enabled our coastal plain pond-shore habitat to showcase its seed bank. The coastal plain pond-shore is a globally rare, fragile habitat characterized by unique herbaceous plants that thrive on sandy, acidic, and groundwater-fed ponds whose water levels fluctuate seasonally, revealing exposed pond-shores in late summer. These ephemeral shorelines are critical for a high concentration of state and globally rare plants and animals. The Slender Marsh Pink (Sabatia campanulata) is one such plant that is listed as Endangered in the Commonwealth and visible in decent numbers this year during draw-down. We celebrate the ephemeral species having their day, but moving forward, water conservation will be the key.

So what to do?

~ Adhere to watering restrictions laid out by Nantucket Town and the state

~ Conserve indoor water use voluntarily, even if on well water

~ Be fire-safe in the out of doors

~ Plant drought-resistant and native species

Longer-term droughts will need additional considerations, but this is a good place to start.

Droughts have always been a part of natural climate cycles; however, humandriven climate change exacerbates their severity. Rising temperatures increase evaporative demand, which means the atmosphere pulls more moisture from water bodies, soil, and plants. This phenomenon transforms moderate droughts into severe ones. Recent studies have shown that warming trends make droughts last longer, cover larger areas, and cause more significant environmental harm. So we should expect more drought conditions and the accompanying water restrictions in the future.

Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. The HERBERT T is fully licensed and insured and is fully equipped electronically. While you’re on Nantucket, do as the islanders do - catch some blues! $150 per person (minimum of 2 people). Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.
