Introducing Kids to the Power of Words

The magic of storytelling returns to Children’s Beach this Saturday, August 23 as the Nantucket Book Foundation hosts its second annual Children’s Book Day. Building on the success of the inaugural event held last September, this year’s event continues the mission of fostering literacy and igniting a lifelong love of reading in island youngsters.

The concept for Children’s Book Day originated with Shantaw Bloise-Murphy, director of Culture and Tourism on Nantucket, who drew inspiration from attending the Brooklyn Children’s Museum Book Fest for Kids. “I grew up in a household where reading was crucial,” Bloise-Murphy explained. “I developed a love for

Lead Gift & Naming of New AAN Gallery

Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) has announced a transformational lead gift by the Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson Foundation, the Atlantic Foundation, and the India Blake Johnson Foundation towards the purchase and renovation of AAN’s new gallery at 8 Federal Street. In recognition of this generous support, the gallery will be named the “Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery.”

“This is a milestone moment for the Artists Association,” said Laurie Champion, AAN Board President. “The Johnson family’s belief in the power of art has turned vision into reality. Their support ensures that our mission will thrive for generations to come.”

AAN purchased 8 Federal Street in March of 2025 and has hosted rotating exhibitions since April. The current exhibit is 10x10, a special annual exhibit open to all artists in the community featuring artworks that measure exactly 10 inches by 10 inches.

“This property offers an opportunity to expand and remodel, so we plan to create a gallery with increased square footage, and a more sophisticated and modern space for our artists,” says Robert Frazier, Artistic Director. “The Johnson family’s lead gift will successfully launch our campaign to create the best gallery possible for our Artist Members and the Nantucket community.”

The naming of the new gallery honors the legacy of Cecelia Joyce and Seward Johnson, whose commitment to the arts has long enriched Nantucket’s cultural landscape.

“As we celebrate 80 years of AAN, this exciting new chapter reflects our continued commitment to the island and its artists,” said Tracey Sears, Executive Director. “We invite everyone to be part of this moment: to help build a permanent, inspiring home for Nantucket’s vibrant visual arts community.”

The newly named Cecelia Joyce & Seward Johnson Gallery at 8 Federal Street will serve as a cornerstone for AAN’s more than 300 Artist Members and the public for years to come.

Note to the Blues: the Derby Is August 23

The signs are everywhere. Shorter days, football teams getting ready, the August Blues fishing tournament in full swing—yup, this summer is slipping away like a Don Henley song. So when I found myself with an open afternoon last week I decided to get out to the beach and see if maybe I could actually participate in the tournament by catching a bluefish. Seems reasonable, right?

I soon found myself on Great Point, my happy place. Nothing doing on the outside (eastern) edge. Not much happening at the point itself. I headed for Coatue. Tammy King, my fellow guide and one of the absolute best beach fishers around, was there with a couple of clients. “Fish are busting right there!” Tammy was so excited that it took a moment to process what she was saying. I pulled well past Tammy’s truck and her clients.

I quickly saw what she was referring to—terns were over some fish maybe 25 yards offshore. My favorite fishing rod was rigged up with a shiny metal lure (please note that my lure choices this time of year are basic: either an Island X 180 Hellfire or something shiny and metal). I casted just ahead of the birds and got that hunk of metal moving quickly. BANG! A big crash of water, followed by the sound of line getting ripped off of my ree—fish on! Only this thing didn’t seem like a bluefish at all. Nope, definitely a bonito.

For the next ninety or so minutes, it was all about those crazy bonito. Fast, aggressive, and fun to catch, the bones were everywhere, and they were chewing! Yes, I had a blast catching these speed demons. It was the kind of day that I’ll be thinking of during the long winter: a memory that will fill me with hope that the warm summer months will once again be back, along with the fish. But there was a nagging disappointment as well—where are the bluefish?

It's been a strange fishing season, folks. The bluefish have been very sporadic around the island’s beaches. They’ve been particularly scarce in this month of August, a month somewhat dedicated to them! The blues that I’ve caught with my fishing clients have been pretty darn big, for the most part. That’s certainly exciting. One fish in particular measured 37 inches! That would have been the big fish for the tournament. Alas, it was caught in the last few days of July by one of my clients (he was justifiably thrilled). But no awesome Tedy Bruschi autographed Patriots jersey for him or for me. But there’s still time, right?

I am privileged to fish with the coolest kids in the world. This week’s crew included Finn, Cubby, and Andrew. My goal on each trip was to put them on some bluefish so that they could be automatically entered into the August Blues tournament’s junior division. I failed in the bluefish mission. They each caught bonito and, judging by their smiles, they couldn’t have been happier. And don’t get me wrong: I was happy as well. There was just that nagging feeling that I had failed each of them by not finding those August Blues for them, try as I might!

I needed something to pick up my fishing spirit, and it magically appeared on my text thread with the August Blues group. On Saturday, August 23, the tournament is holding the first ever August Blues Derby Day. This event will be held at Point ‘O Breakers Beach, located at the end of South Shore Road. It’s an ambitious plan, for sure, but one with worthy goals.

“The main emphasis of the Derby is to get juniors on the beach and participating in the August Blues tournament. We created the family team prize so the juniors can participate as part of their team and contribute to winning a prize. We picked the 23rd because it is one of the last Saturdays before the holiday weekend and when the kids start school. The Derby is a great reason to get families together on the beach.” Dr. Greg Chotkowski, tournament director, is excited about the Derby Day events. “We will have casting games for accuracy and potentially for the longest cast, if the wind cooperates! And there will be food, of course!”

Food, you say? Well ok, I know where I’ll be fishing on Saturday, 8/23! “We will start at 6 am with coffee and bagels. Then we’ll be grilling burgers and hot dogs throughout the day. We have had generous donations to support this event. From porta-potties, a tent, tables, food, and a generous cash donation by Hal Beacham to cover incidentals—this is going to be great!”

Dr. Greg has every right to be excited about the Derby Day. It’s dedicated to the next generation of fishers, and it’s about a very worthy cause: supporting the research to end Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The August Blues tournament is in its third year. The competition is fun and high-level. The current leaderboard shows that a mere two inches separate the top three leaders for the beach divi-

Island Risks of Lone Star Ticks & Alpha Gal

I first encountered lone star ticks on Tuckernuck Island in 2015. I had one adult female hitchhike back to Nantucket on me. At the time, it was only the second report from Nantucket with many more known from Tuckernuck. Of course, it was just a matter of time before Nantucket, and all of its available habitat, became the next place for lone star ticks to populate. Since then, lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) have established and become dominant in parts of Nantucket starting in the western end and are now found throughout the island. And, yes, they are found all the way to the eastern end.

The lone star tick is one example of a “climate refugees”: a term used to describe species whose ranges are expanding due to changing climate. Traditionally from south-eastern, south-central, and mid-Atlantic states, their distribution has been expanding. A warming climate is making larger swaths of the northern U.S. more hospitable to lone star ticks, which can now be found as far west as Colorado and Wyoming and as far north as Maine.

Lone star ticks are notable (and named) for the distinctive white dot on their reddish-brown bodies, which is only found on adult females. The adult males have white dots or streaks on the outer edges of their bodies. Nymphs are smaller and distinguished by reddish-brown bodies and fast speed. Yes, they will “run” up your clothes upon contact.

Lone star ticks are known to be more aggressive than black-legged ticks actively “hunting” down a host instead of passively hoping one walks by since they are attracted to carbon dioxide (basically us breathing out).

What are we to do?

I have a high exposure rate to ticks due to my job working outdoors in the field and off trail conducting research. Tromping around the grasses, shrubs, swamps, and other unmanaged habitats of Nantucket puts me, and others in our profession, at a higher risk of exposure. Here is some of what we do to minimize tick bites:

The first, and best, line of defense is prevention. Keeping trails mowed and

staying on paths is a good first step. We wear closed-toed shoes and long pants at all times. However, staying on mowed trails isn’t always possible when conducting research or managing habitat. At work, I treat my field pants (the ones I wear out in the brush everyday), socks, shoes, and hat with permethrin. I know that choice isn’t for everyone, but it is one I am personally comfortable with. I spray the outside of my field clothes with permethrin while I am not wearing them and let them dry in the sun. Supposedly, the permethrin will be effective for more than 40 washes. I generally reapply every couple of weeks.

It’s also important to check periodically throughout the day for ticks and pull them off clothing right away. For tiny ticks – the nymphs– I recommend a heavyduty lint roller. Duct tape also works. At the end of a work day (or time in the field), wash clothes immediately. A hot dryer will also kill ticks. Don’t leave them to linger in the clothes hamper.

The real question everyone asks is what do I do once I’ve been bitten by a tick? I will preface this by saying you should, of course, consult a medical professional. For black-legged ticks (formerly called “deer ticks”), if you find them biting you, you have to get their whole body off/out of you ASAP. If the tick was on you less than 24 hours, generally you are fine.

Lone star ticks are a different entity. Unlike other ticks, their long mandible means that their bites can feel like a little sting. Like other ticks, they go for moisture, so they bite in places like armpits, back of the knees, waistbands, and other nether-regions. The difference in a lone star tick bite is that they can bite and keep going. They don’t always burrow in. That’s great because they don’t stay, but it also means one tick can bite multiple times. And they are itchy!

The good news about lone star ticks is that overall, they have a much lower infection rate for tick-borne diseases. According to our state website at mass.gov/info-details/tick-borne-disease-prevention, “Lone star ticks are not a significant source of human illness in Massachusetts at this time but are capable

Poetry Festival Returns

Without art, we are not Nantucket.

But how could we understand that without poetry?

Poetry shows us there is beauty in the mundane. We are making poetry, even if we aren't writing anything. Poetry tells us there is so much more than what is in front of us. The everyday is art. The nail gun is a paintbrush, is a keyboard, is a pencil— just like the fishing rod, the loom, the harpoon. Poetry remembers the whaling ships, the dark oil or blood slick on the deck, the documentary of it all. The feeling of the paper, the rope, the pen, the dough. Poetry says: I have always been here. Poetry says: don't forget about me. Poetry says: but you can only see me if you look.

Farewell Poetry Festival was started on a whim, from a conversation between Annye Camara and I at the Atheneum help desk in June 2024. Annye mentioned she’d always wanted to put together a poetry festival on Nantucket. I said, let’s do it. I had been looking for a summer project, and putting on a poetry event seemed a worthy use of my summer.

The 2024 season headlined Gregory Orr, and was thrown together in less than a month and a half. It was more successful than I thought it would be. More people showed up than we had seats for, and I received emails for weeks after from audience members, telling me how much they had loved the event, and how badly they wanted it to return the following year. I hadn’t been planning to do another season; I didn’t even know if I'd be on the island again, or if I’d be living in Boston after school ended.

As April came around, I was missing Nantucket, and I was missing the festival. I felt like I had really accomplished something, and I couldn't just leave it as a one-off. I began planning season 2. Here we are...

Events will begin on Friday, August 22, with an opening reading at 56 Centre Street, 5pm, followed by a social reception to welcome the festival.

On Saturday morning, August 23, Audre Lorde Award winning poet and environmentalist, Elizabeth Bradfield, will teach a Poetry & Nature workshop on

Take the Nantucket Limerick Challenge

This famous series of limericks was discovered in a June 14, 1924 edition of a Nantucket newspaper. It all began when the Princeton Tiger revived the then well-known limerick printed below and the Chicago Tribune answered witht he second limerick. The New York Exchange went one step further with the third rhyme, and the Pawtucket Times took over from there. We invite you to add to the trio’s adventures. Decades ago, Yesterday’s Island encouraged readers to continue the saga. This year, because of repeated requests, we again challenge our readers to write their own ”chapters.“ (Limericks have five lines that follow the rhythm in the examples below.) Email the limericks to us at nantucketnews@gmail.com; we will be pleased to share them with our readers in print and online.

There once was a man from Nantucket, Who kept all of his cash in a bucket, But his daughter, named Nan, Ran away with a man, And as for the bucket, Nantucket.

—Princeton Tiger

But he followed the pair to Pawtucket, The man and the girl with the bucket; And he said to the man, He was welcome to Nan, But as for the bucket, Pawtucket.

—Chicago Tribune

Then the pair followed Pa to Manhasset, Where he still held the cash as an asset, But Nant and the man Stole the money and ran, And as for the bucket, Manhasset.

Introducing Kids to the Power of Words

books, falling in love with characters, and feeling a part of something else. My love of reading has transferred to my son, and watching his love of literature develop made me want to bring this to all children here on Nantucket.”

The first Children’s Book Day in 2024 was strategically timed for between National Read a Book Day and International Literacy Day, transforming Children’s Beach into a haven for young book lovers and aspiring readers aged 2 to 9. The event’s success laid the groundwork for this year’s expanded celebration.

The second annual Children's Book Day kicks off at 10 am with a welcome ceremony, followed by a performance by returning favorite G Pa Rhymes (Gary Wakstein). The packed morning schedule is a carefully curated lineup of activities designed to celebrate “the transformative power of words for our youngest bookworms.”

Multiple authors will read from their works, giving children the opportunity to experience the magic of storytelling firsthand. Saturday’s roster of authors includes Lisa Perron, Natikka Jones, Megan Litwin, Bobbi McPeak, and Lucia Arno Benson, alongside returning participants G Pa Rhymes and Barbara Tibbetts of The LOOK Book series.

The entertainment lineup includes the Magic Mark Show, Nanpuppets, and a special appearance by Wendy Rouillard and Barnaby Bear.

Children’s Book Day 2025 will conclude with interactive activities starting shortly after noon. Children can do a specially designed Children’s Book Day Scavenger Hunt, meet with authors, play lawn games, and participate in craft activities that encourage children to explore their artistic talents while connecting with the stories they heard.

With its combination of entertainment, education, and community engagement, Children’s Book Day has established itself as more than just an event: it’s become a celebration of the fundamental role that literacy plays in childhood development and community building. When our island comes together around the shared value of literacy, the impact extends far beyond a single day at the beach, creating ripples that will influence young readers for years to come.

Island Risks of Lone Star Ticks

from page 7

of spreading tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI),” however, the prevalence of these infections is much lower.

The other aspect of lone star ticks that is not to be taken lightly is that these ticks can cause Alpha-gal syndrome. Alpha-gal syndrome (or AGS) is what is commonly called the “meat allergy.” Getting bitten by a lone star tick doesn’t immediately make you allergic to meat. Everyone reacts differently, and it’s a combination of genetics, how many bites you get, how long the tick remains. Alpha-gal stands for galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose, a sugar that’s found in red meat, including pork and beef, as well as in certain animal products, such as milk and gelatin. It’s also found in the saliva of lone star ticks. When some people are bitten by the lone star tick, their immune system reacts to the alpha-gal, and then the next time they eat red meat, their antibodies produced in response to the tick bite go overboard and cause a hyperactive immune response. So, alphagal syndrome is a both tick-borne condition and a food allergy.

This is a new and emerging issue and, as such, it’s a new area of research. AGS was only formally recognized in the medical community in 2009. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t here and already affecting Nantucketers. A recent article in a Martha’s Vineyard publication stated hundreds of cases on AGS on that island, sparking interest in how many were found on Nantucket. When we asked the Nantucket Cottage Hospital for their data, they said that during the past year plus (January 2024 thru April 2025), only three tests were given and of those, only one came back positive. That is shocking to me since I personally know six people who have tested positive and shared the info with me. And if the results on Nantucket are anything like Martha’s Vineyard (I suspect they will be), we should be ready for an exponential increase in AGS.

One conservation colleague who spoke to me about their experience with AGS said that at the time of diagnosis (2021) there was little information or support. The internet was a black hole of scary information that was difficult to navigate. In fact, the alpha-gal diagnosis was given after a litany of other tests couldn’t explain their symptoms. Even then, there were no resources or assis-

continued on page 20

As with many allergies, the actual severity of the allergy is very individualized. People who suffer from AGS may experience wide ranging symptoms, including hives or itchy rash; nausea or vomiting; heartburn or indigestion; diarrhea; cough; shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, throat, tongue, or eye lids; dizziness or faintness; or severe stomach pain. Symptoms commonly appear 2-6 hours after eating food or other exposure to products containing alpha-gal.

The people I know on Nantucket who have the alpha-gal syndrome have described experiencing debilitating gastric distress after eating meat (usually about 6 hours), swollen lips and mouth, and/or hive-like rashes. None has gone into anaphylactic shock, but all have changed their diets to stop eating red meat and other mammal products. Some people can still have dairy, while others find they have a reaction to it. The important thing to remember if you think you have these symptoms is to check with your health care professional.

When I asked what advice you would give someone who just found out that they have AGS, my colleague said this, “Take a breath. Give yourself grace.” There could be a grieving period for the life previously led, but there is now support to the changing lifestyle. Navigating things like eating out can be awkward and tricky. But there are many meat-free options available.

For one colleague with AGS, the Instagram @twoalphagals has become a community support. Started by Candice Matthis and Debbie Nichols after they were both diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome in 2019, the site provides a community of support for those living with AGS. In addition to sharing knowledge, it provides connection and support for those having to make lifestyle changes. As they state, they help people “navigate the alpha-gal lifestyle.” The two alphagals also advocate for AGS-safe food labels and started the Alpha Gal Foundation to help share information. After speaking with people I know who have AGS, this can be a lifeline when the other options offer scare-tactics and misinformation.

One piece of good news is that, for some people, the alpha-gal syndrome can lessen and even disappear over time. The one colleague diagnosed in 2021 has since tested their tolerance and is now AGS symptom free. It’s not a free pass, however. Their focus is now avoiding getting bitten again. As we said before, prevention is the key.

It looks like on Nantucket we’ll be living with lone star ticks for the foreseeable future. Knowing the risks and taking steps towards prevention is important. We can all still go outside and enjoy nature.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
