Staff of Yesterday's Island/Today’s Nantucket and of The Insiders Guide to Nantucket: Nantucket.net are delighted to dedicate this issue to the winners of our annual Nantucket Photo Contest and to the many entries we received that deserve honorable mention.

This year’s contest drew an impressive field of more than 975 entries from photographers who showcased their passion for Nantucket's natural beauty and timeless charm.

The 2025 contest once again highlighted what makes Nantucket so photographically compelling, with the majority of submissions featuring the island’s sunsets and the dramatic waves that crash along our pristine shores. From the golden hour glow over Nantucket Sound to the powerful Atlantic swells along the south shore, photographers demonstrated their deep connection to our island’s breathtaking evening skies and ever-changing seascapes.

People from 33 states entered this year’s contest: many entries were from visitors who live all across Massachusetts and a good number were taken by Nantucket residents. In addition to spectacular shots of sunsets and waves, participants sent in lots of photos of hydrangeas in full bloom, of children enjoying the beach, and of four-legged friends (we loved seeing more of Willow, who was featured in the photo that won second place last year). Nantucket photographer Burton “Spruce” Balkind shared with us his great action shot of an island surfer.

Misery Loves Company

A horror show about a sociopath who demands stories be rewritten to her satisfaction is, I daresay, opportune. Onstage now at the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, this new production of Misery is bad to the bone, subtly campy, & crazy good all at once. Indeed, Misery loves company—get your tickets now!

Directed by TWN Artistic Director Justin Cerne, this production of Misery feels spot-on timely. Its bullseye brilliance addresses themes of power and control, celebrity worship, mental illness, and rural isolation. The use of instrumental versions of familiar pop songs and projected typewritten chapter titles also creates an immersive feel for theatergoers.

Set during a blizzard in Silver Creek, Colorado, romance writer Paul Sheldon (Andrew Rein) goes missing when his car careens off a mountain road. The play opens with him lying in bed in his #1 fan’s home with no memory of what happened. Beyond this, Annie Wilkes (Sharon Wheatley) is an erstwhile nurse continued on page 19

Island Hunting Season

A Conservation Tool for More than Just Deer

As fall arrives on our island, we welcome fewer people, crisp fall air, and the start of our hunting seasons. Hunting is a time-honored tradition, part of Nantucket’s cultural heritage just as fishing is. But it is also an important management tool for our conservation organizations and property owners.

I know deer have been on a lot of people’s minds, but before we get to that, it’s important to know that hunting seasons on Nantucket start well before deer season. You may hear gunshots in the distance or see hunter orange on a walk –that’s all part of legal harvest for a number of species on island, not just deer.

Early Canada goose hunting began on September 1, while pheasant and rabbit hunting season opens October 18. There are also special early waterfowl hunts for youth and military (active & veterans) which started September 20.

For our deer seasons, there are different dates depending on the method. Archery deer hunting season begins statewide on October 6. Shogun season is December 1 to 13, and primitive firearms runs December 15 to January 31. Reminder: hunting on Sunday is not permitted anywhere in Massachusetts.

If you are out walking around some of Nantucket’s conservation lands, you may see someone in camo, hunter orange, or holding a bow. Remember to be respectful, not to disturb or impede hunters. I know from multiple hunters on-island that hunter harassment is something they all deal with— hunter harassment is illegal under Massachusetts state law, which prohibits deliberately interfering with the lawful taking of fish and wildlife. The state’s environmental police and local law enforcement are authorized to enforce the law.

The respect goes both ways, but I’ve heard more stories of people unaware of the hunting seasons who are taken off-guard seeing or hearing signs of hunting activity. Here are some things to remember if you are a non-hunter:

~ Know where and when hunting is allowed

~ Wear bright clothes when out on the trails

~ Keep dogs leashed at all times

~ Do not interfere with hunts

Get to The Point!

Never look a gift horse in the mouth. A curious saying, right? Evidently it was semi-common back in once-upon-a-time land for one person to grace a friend or relative with a large, four-legged draft animal. The receiver of such a fine gift would be considered rude if they then examined the teeth of their newly acquired horse to determine the resale value of said beast. It’s good to have some context, right? So, with this cliché in mind, I have decided to avoid digging too hard into the circumstances that led to the recent opening of Great Point to us fishing types. You see, for years now – YEARS!! – the tip of Great Point has been closed to humans. How come, you ask? Well, hard to say exactly why, but the common reason given involved the protection of seals. Presumably, some eggheads in Washington, DC declared with many harumphs, wherefores, and other fancy sounding proclamations that seals were to be protected and Nantucket fishers could go kick rocks. The area was fenced off. Signs from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service were posted threatening dire consequences should anyone dare venture into the now protected area.

The USFWS website paints a picture: “Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge is one of eight refuges that comprise the Eastern Massachusetts National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This remarkable refuge located on the very tip of the CoskataCoatue Peninsula, where the land meets the sea, and the Nantucket sound and At-

lantic Ocean merge. The refuge draws many visitors with some of the best saltwater fishing in the northeast as well as excellent wildlife watching and photography.”

The USFWS website sure makes it seem wonderful, right? But the reality was that no one who wasn’t a fish consuming, webbed claw sporting blubbery mammal could access this “remarkable refuge.” That wonderful saltwater fishing? Yeah, don’t even bother to ask. You couldn’t get any closer than four hundred yards to it. The most pristine fishing spot on our beloved island had been awarded to the seals, who promptly turned it into a giant seal toilet. It was enough to make a guy want to throw large containers of tea into the harbor, I tell ya!

This prohibition lasted for (um, my best guess) about twenty years. Island fishers were stuck in the wilderness like Moses and his crew, longing for the day when they would be allowed to enter the Promised Land. Then, on a recent beautiful mid-September afternoon, word spread throughout the island’s fishing community like a wind-driven wildfire: The Point is open! The real Point! Fishers could now park and hike out to that beautiful place where the Great Point rip meets the land, free from the threat of federal prosecution. My fishing buddies sent a collective text cheer that reverberated across Nantucket: so much winning!

Fall Fun Continues

Most of us who live on Nantucket year-round think of Autumn as “our time”— the weather is glorious, the waters are still warm enough for swimming, restaurant reservations are easier to come by, and we can find parking downtown.

It’s time to exhale after a busy summer season, but there’s still quite a bit of local, small-town fun to enjoy. The Nantucket Island Fair just had another successful weekend mid-September, and this Saturday, September 27, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is hosting their Fall Festival at the Oldest House on Sunset Hill. From 10 am to 1 pm, this free day of family-friendly fun will feature hands-on activities for families, tours of the historic Jethro Coffin House & Garden, lawn games, plus a chance to view the Community Quilt Display and add to the NHA’s community weaving loom.

Visitors are welcome to bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn with live music from 12-1 pm. Parking is limited, but the Oldest House is a short walk or bike ride from town. Rain date is Saturday October 4.

The week of September 29 to October 5 the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce has organized Nantucket Restaurant Week to encourage everyone to dine out and savor local cuisine.

Friday, October 3, the Nantucket Shellfish Association holds its annual Scallopers Ball. Timed for the beginning of family scalloping season, this popular fundraiser with food, drink, music, dancing, and a silent auction celebrates Nantucket's shellfishing heritage and the preservation of our waters. The Artists Association of Nantucket’s 2025 Wet Paint Weekend will be on October 10 to 12. This vibrant, art-filled weekend brings together artists, collectors, and art lovers for pop-up exhibitions, plein air artists painting around town, a community-wide art hop, and a live auction- all free. This year, AAN has named acclaimed painter Joan Albaugh as the 2025 Wet Paint Honoree Artist. Known for her striking and serene seascapes, Albaugh has long been a cherished member of the Nantucket arts community.

All proceeds from Wet Paint Weekend support arts education, year-round gallery exhibitions, and community outreach that fosters the next generation of artists. “Wet Paint is a beautiful reminder of how alive and connected our art colony truly is,” said Robert Frazier, AAN Artistic Director. “It’s more than a fundraiser: it's a triumph of ingenuity, collaboration, and Nantucket itself.”

On Friday, October 17, the NHA is celebrating their 2025 main exhibit, Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket, with a festive 21+ party in their Nantucket Whaling Museum with light bites, drinks, and an exhibit tour. The theme of the evening is Nantucket Fashion, so arrive wearing your Nantucket Reds, whale pants, madras, and Nantucket Looms shawls. Tickets are $50 at nha.org ($35 for members).

Sunday, October 26, from 10 am to 3 pm, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation is holding a Fall Festival and Batacular Bike Race. This free community event at 220 Milestone Road will offer hayrides, kids’ games, a Nanpuppet show, live music, and more. Running alongside the festival is the Batacular Bike Race. Spooky season on-island begins with the Coast Guard Station Brant Point’s infamous haunted house, sponsored by the Cape Cod Chief Petty Officers Association. Those brave enough to venture through the Nautical Nightmare should walk to the USCG station at Brant Point on October 28 from 5 to 9 pm—5 to 6 pm this first night will have no “jump scares.” The Nightmare continues on October 29 and 30 from 6 to 9 pm. This event is open to all ages who dare to participate, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free; the donation of a non-perishable food item for the Nantucket Food Pantry is suggested. Knights of Columbus will be in attendance each night selling fair food. Halloween on Nantucket is for all ages. Main Street will be closed to traffic for the afternoon so that everyone can gather—in full costume—to trick-or-treat, enjoy music, and see neighbors who have been too busy to meet up during the summer. The fun on Main Street usually begins around 3 pm. From 3:30 to 6 pm, the public is encouraged to stop by the Whaling Museum on Broad Street for some candy and to take photos with Tony Sarg’s seamonster balloon “Morton.” Later on the evening of October 31, The Nantucket Dreamland and the Rose & Crown are both hosting Halloween parties with prizes for the best costumes. Looking ahead, the Nantucket Atheneum is already accepting registrations for their Cold Turkey Plunge: the exciting way Nantucket residents & visitors start their Thanksgiving Day every year, helping to raise money to support our island’s public library and the many free programs they offer.

The Exciting Life of Nancy Gardner Prince

“I don’t belong to anyone. I am the daughter of Thomas Gardner of Nantucket.”

Nancy Gardner Prince

In 1850, Nancy Gardener Prince, a Black Nantucket descendant who traveled the world in the 1800s, self-published her life story, which proved so popular that it went through three editions. The autobiography explores her hard upbringing in Massachusetts. Following her marriage to Nero Prince, she lived for several years in St. Petersburg, Russia. She later worked with abolitionists in Boston and made two missionary trips to post-emancipation Jamaica. During her travels, she was threatened by pirates, sailed through a hurricane, and landed in New Orleans, where she witnessed firsthand the evils of trade in enslaved people.

The Nantucket Historical Association is excited to release a new illustrated publication, The Adventures of Nancy Gardner Prince, Written by Herself, with adaptation by Frances Karttunen and illustrations by John Walsh. This book, adapted from the original autobiography that is part of the Nantucket Atheneum collection, tells the authentic story of Nancy Gardner Prince.

“The NHA was thrilled to partner with Fran and John to create an illustrated version of this important Nantucket story. Nancy’s incredible life story was something we wanted to bring to life with original illustrations that will allow us to share her story with a new audience, particularly young adults in our community and beyond,” said Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

The book provides a full account of Mrs. Prince’s adventurous life and her many connections to civil rights and anti-slavery efforts in the 19th century. A “Birographies” section at the end of the book explains the people she interacted with, beginning with her father, Nantucket mariner Thomas Gardner, and running through to famous Bostonians and abolitionists, including the Rev. Thomas Paul, William Lloyd Garrison, and Lucretia Coffin Mott.

The Adventures of Nancy Gardner Prince, Written by Herself is available to purchase in softcover at the Museum Shop on Broad Street, and will soon to be included in the online shop at nantucketmuseumshop.org.

I must say that playing Paul Sheldon looks like torture, so root for him no matter what. In other words, even though he is immobilized the entire play, Rein steps into the role with both feet, mustering all the strength he can. Truly, I believe his part involves physical discomfort and stamina.

By contrast, playing Annie Wilkes presents the opportunity to play a villainess. Her goals, motivations, and conflicts drive the whole story, which again, starts with Paul’s auto accident in a remote location. Wicked Wilkes will only make this horrible situation worse.

Unfortunately for him, Paul’s injuries include compound leg fractures as well as a dislocated right shoulder. He exhibits obvious signs and symptoms of severe pain, which Annie treats with Novril. To be clear, this is not a real medication. Yet she uses it against him to create drug dependency.

Sensing a smidge of stranger danger, Paul adjusts his own reactions to Annie’s emotional dysregulation. As she feeds him, gives him his pills, and empties his urinal, she regales Paul with her deep knowledge of his latest novel’s main character, Misery Chastain. In fact, Misery has had a starring role throughout Paul’s writing career, given the series he’s written around her.

Meanwhile, Annie is heavily invested in what happens next because she has followed both author and main character so closely for so long. Likewise, Paul just wants to know when the roads will re-open and phone service resume so he can call his daughter and his agent.

Annie’s false imprisonment of Paul slowly expands as she provides vague and untrue replies to his main concerns. After he shares his latest draft manuscript with her, things take a dreadful turn.

Why? Because Annie is deranged. She drags an outdoor grill into the room where Paul is trying to recover, only to park it inches from the bed. Then she throws his manuscript on the grill, douses it with lighter fluid, and hands him a matchbox.

Annie forces Paul to torch the book-in-progress because she did not like the ending. Mind you, the story is fictional, but she is hellbent on a fire and fury bedside book burning anyway. Can you say “Stockholm Syndrome”?

She then demands Paul write a new novel to bring Misery back to life. Annie sets him up at a table with a typewriter in the same claustrophobic sleeping space where all the action takes place. Seated in a wheelchair, Paul knows his best hope of getting out alive is appeasing the madwoman who rules the roost.

As anyone who’s seen the film or read the novel knows, things get worse and worse for Paul. For example, one day Sheriff Buster (AL Bundonis) knocks on Annie’s front door asking about Paul. Annie cheerfully dismisses the sheriff, and eventually locks Paul in his room and ties him to the bed.

But Misery is most famous for the hobbling scene, which feels like an apt metaphor in America right now. Though Sheriff Buster later returns, Annie has no interest in the law, either. Sound familiar?

Wheatley, Rein, and Bundonis are all excellent, individually and together. Wheatley is convincing as a woman with axes to grind and a sledgehammer to swing. Similarly, Rein makes you think he is writing the great American novel during the play’s 105 minutes. Finally, Bundonis captures his smaller role with aplomb.

But the insane way Wheatley inhabits Annie Wilkes will stay with me for a long time. I’m sure Kathy Bates would give her seal of approval, too; she’d probably say, “Break a leg.”

Of course the primary source material for Misery comes from the “King of Horror” himself, Stephen King. His 1987 novel of the same name was subsequently adapted by screenwriter William Goldman for the 1990 film. It starred James Caan, Kathy Bates, Richard Farnsworth, Frances Sternhagen, and Lauren Bacall as a literary agent. Bates won an Academy Award for Best Actress. Stephen King has described Misery as an allegorical tale about his cocaine addiction. In real life, he overcame this drug problem when his wife staged an intervention.

Unless you’re writing a book, and even if you are, stage your own intervention from real world toxic culture and check out Misery before it closes early next month.

Island Hunting Season

Much of Nantucket’s open space is open to hunting. As the largest landowner on island, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation has great information on their website about properties where they permit hunting and what to know about hunting their land at nantucketconservation.org/what-we-protect/hunting/. The Nantucket Land Bank posts guidelines for hunting on their 3,000 acres of public land open to hunting at nantucketlandbank.org/properties/hunting-guidelines/.

These lands are open to everyone, so when we share the space, we need to respect each other and the property owners. If you’re not comfortable walking or recreating in areas where there is hunting, know which properties are closed to hunting. The Linda Loring Nature Foundation, for example, is never open to hunting. And there is no hunting anywhere on Sundays.

Even if you are not a hunter, it is recognized as a valuable conservation and management tool. Most of the time, hunting is done responsibly and with safety and respect for the land and for others. By controlling the deer population, hunting can play an important public health role in reducing the incidence of tickborne diseases. This not only has benefits for humans but also for the overall health of the deer herd and our native plant communities. You’ve all heard the rumblings or maybe felt them yourself: “There are just too many deer!” I, myself, have had flower beds, pumpkins, and even potted plants on my front porch pillaged by our neighborhood deer—and I have a dog!

We all know the story of the few deer 100 years ago that started the population we have today. But have we reached capacity now on our tiny island? Are there really more deer here than ever? Or are there just more people to notice?

According to state data, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard have the highest deer densities in the state. Nantucket County is State Deer Management Zone 14. In this zone, the deer density is estimated to be more than 85 deer per square mile. According to the state website, deer densities are thought to be even higher in areas where hunting access is restricted.

On Nantucket, the estimated number of deer ranges from a 2023 estimate of approximately 3,000 deer to recent 2025 estimates by state wildlife biologist, Martin Feehan, suggesting that the population could be as high as 10,000. “A lit-

tle less than half the island is actually hunted each year. Those areas have much lower densities than areas closed to hunting where densities can be expected to be about three to four times higher. From this alone there would be a floor of around 10,000 when you factor in the 800 to 1,000 deer harvested each year plus the un-reported and unrecovered deer,” Feehan said in January 2025.

Without population management, deer become overabundant. In areas with too many deer, habitats can be damaged by over-browsing, and vehicle collisions can increase public safety risks.

Other suggestions for reducing deer herd, like deer birth control, are nonstarters. The amount of time, effort, and money needed to effectively reduce the populations are unfathomable and likely impossible given the amount of open space and the size of the population: more than 90% of females would need to be treated. Why try for a multi-million-dollar unsustainable solution when there is a group of community members who are open to the task of deer reduction? For those who aren’t familiar with deer hunting, in many areas, there are “tag” limits to how many deer can be harvested. With the soaring populations on Nantucket, there is nearly unlimited “antlerless” deer permits, though there are restrictions on the number of buck tags. Harvesting large numbers of female deer is more effective at reducing the reproductive potential of the herd.

Hunting is also a sustainable local food source. I once had an academic advisor who liked to say, “You want to be a conservationist? You want to help native plants? Eat a deer.” I have a freezer full of venison every year. We make our own sausage, jerky, and even dog food. Living off the land this way has multiple benefits to conservation, human health, and public safety. And it’s delicious. One change to hunting regulations this year is an extended hunt into January on Nantucket (and MV). This is a “primitive firearm” hunt, so no shotguns. One concern some Nantucket hunters have with this new season is that it may attract more off-island hunters who have little or no knowledge of huntable areas or relationships with landowners. Local hunters tend to have more respect for the lands, property boundaries, and for burying gut piles. It’s only a few bad apples that don’t respect the lands and other property users who make a bad reputation for all. Time will tell how this hunt goes and if the state deems it successful. Regardless of whether you hunt, we all want the fauna of Nantucket to be healthy: from deer to rabbit, wading ducks to seabirds. We do better when we remember that we are all part of the community. Be courteous to each other and hopefully there will be a few less deer to snack on our gardens.

Hearing this joyous news was one thing, but I just had to see for myself. I took a drive out there the very next morning with my buddy Josh Sandsbury and his uncle Carll who was visiting his hometown with his wonderful wife, Kim. We parked and stepped hesitantly through the new opening in the fence towards the Point. I felt like an East German resident crossing into the previously forbidden West after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was glorious, provided you could ignore the lingering perfume of seal droppings.

Carll is a year or so older than I am: we grew up in the glory days of Nantucket beach fishing. We both remembered the Great Point trips from our childhoods, seeing fishers lined up shoulder to shoulder as they tossed homemade plugs into the rip. Birds would dive, bluefish and bass churned the water, scattering bait in all directions. Dinners were caught. We kids would marvel at the heightened excitement of our fathers as they maneuvered for a spot to cast into the melee. It was an amazing time. I never understood how we allowed those opportunities to be stolen from us with the stroke of a bureaucrat’s pen. Yeah, I’ve carried this resentment for a long, long time.

It was somewhat surreal to once again stand at that magic point where the Great Point rip begins. I briefly imagined the U.S. Marines planting the American flag atop Suribachi. The feeling was victorious in many ways, even if it was a victory that I had not fought for. I decided to simply take the win and savor the moment.

This was a long overdue reunion. An island kid’s legacy returned. A place where new generations can earn their own memories as they fish with their loved ones. Great Point is a treasure that had been stolen. It is ours once again. To whomever made this happen, please accept my deepest gratitude. To those who have never experienced the wonders of fishing at the base of Great Point Rip, get out there! It is a beautiful gift. I have no need to check out the teeth on this particular gift horse.

The Winners Are...

This year, Eric Chrusch of Limerick, PA took first place with his photo overlooking Nantucket town. “We were on day two of our family vacation and decided to take a stroll,” Eric explained, “...walking down Orange Street, I decided to throw my drone up from the sidewalk... When we were finally able to upload the images from the drone, that’s when we saw I had captured the iconic clock tower/church with the stunning background. We knew we had a Nantucket gem of a photo.” Our judges agree!

We couldn’t come to an agreement over who should win second place, so we decided to award this to two entries: the photo of the Berry’s home on Brant Point by Jill Manderfeld of Argyle, Texas and the photo by Nantucket resident Janette Vohs of the two deer daring her to follow them onto private property. We’ve all seen that challenging look from deer foraging in our backyards.

Make sure you don’t miss the fishing while you’re here on Nantucket! The HERBERT T sport fishing boat will take you to where the blues are biting. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. Visit the best beaches on the island at the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.
