As you continue to walk toward Main Street, hang a right onto Easy Street:

by Suzanne Daub
There’s a particular kind of person who can’t walk past a crooked painting without straightening it. Robert Foster is that person: the kind who notices the tilt of a frame in a crowded restaurant, who sees not just walls but canvases waiting for the right art to complete a room’s story.
After more than a quarter century as a vital part of Nantucket’s art scene and 15 years operating his gallery at 8 India Street, Robert Foster is closing his doors to open infinite possibilities as a mobile Art Purveyor.
Foster has spent more than 30 years in the art field, the last 27 of them on Nantucket. At the end of 2025, he’s embarking on what he calls a “reinvigorating transformation”—closing his gallery space to offer a service that will bring art into homes and businesses in a more fluid, personal, and convenient way.
“This will be fun,” Foster says, with passion and enthusiasm. “It will be magical to be part of choosing the art, hanging it, and seeing it in its new home. There’s nothing like actually being there for it.”
Robert Foster Fine Art will remain open at 8 India Street through Nantucket’s Stroll weekend and a bit beyond, with a 25% off moving sale running from the day after Thanksgiving through the Monday after Stroll. But this is not an ending—it’s an evolution into what Foster believes is a more meaningful way to connect art, artists, and collectors.
Foster’s pivot reflects a broader shift in how art lovers now discover and acquire pieces. While galleries once served as the primary gateway to the art world, today’s collectors increasingly purchase directly from artists or through online channels. Rather than fight this trend, Foster is embracing it with a business model that adds what digital transactions cannot provide: expertise, presence, and an unerring aesthetic. He has a deep sense of place and position, and he is a connoisseur of local island talent.

All right, folks, grab a seat and let me tell you a strange tale. It’s a typical Nantucket tale, no doubt about it. And it involves squid, as more than a few great island tales do.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning in October a couple of years ago. I was standing at the top of the steps of Summer Street Church before the service. A young woman, impeccably dressed, approached me and asked, “Hey, you’re the fishing guy, right?” Well, yeah, I guess I am, amongst other things. I cautiously confirmed my fishing guy status, wondering where this conversation was going next. I was promptly hit with a question that I never saw coming. “Do you want some squid? I have about 25 pounds to give away.”
Wait, what? Church, a lady in a stylish sun hat and her Sunday best, and a significant amount of squid? I had to know what this was all about. My new friend introduced herself as Jocelyn Wong. If you don’t know her, well, I’m here to say that you should make the effort as Jocelyn is an absolute hoot! She told me that her friend Jeremy had invited her to go squid fishing a couple of nights earlier and they caught a bunch of the “…elongated, fast-swimming cephalopod mollusks with eight arms and two long tentacles, typically able to change color” (thanks to Microsoft Bing for this definition). Jocelyn confessed that she was having so much fun playing squid games that her catch far exceeded her need. With this being Nantucket, Jocelyn was able to parcel out her excess squid catch for both culinary and bait purposes in fairly short order. I still chuckle about how taken aback I was to be asked such a question at church by such a lovely lady!
Truth be told, I should know that lovely ladies enjoy squidding (a Nantucket verb if there ever was one). For years, the wallpaper on my cellphone was a picture of my lovely daughters, KD and Anna, squidding on the Lisa Lynn, their aunt and uncle’s fishing boat. The picture was from June of 2013. That meant that KD was 15 and Anna was 12 when the picture was taken. To this day, my daughters enjoy recalling their (too few) squidding adventures. KD told me, “I loved squidding. It’s low-commitment fishing. The squid do a dance when you lift them up!”
Ah yes, the squid certainly do a little boogie-woogie on their way up and out of the water when they’re snagged on what appeared to them to be an easy meal. And this is where the problem lies with squidding. Squid utilize their unique ability to emit a large cloud of dark black ink to help them evade predators. Thus, when a squid is hooked, there’s a good chance that anything in the immediate area will soon get a significant blast of squid ink. And squid ink is very difficult to remove from nearby objects, such as white fiberglass boat hulls. Once the squid ink dries onto such a surface, it’s no fun at all to remove.
The inadvertent inking of boats has led to a lot of signage being posted on the Town Pier that, um, discourages squidding. Understandably so, I must say. I know boat owners who have had a lot of negative experiences with both squid ink splattered on their boats and, even worse, squidders actually boarding the moored vessels when squid fishing (a mostly nocturnal activity). Yes, the few have made a mess for the many.
Early spring and late fall are prime times for squidding, due to the abundance of squid in our harbor and the fact that the majority of the boat slips are empty at those times. I recently geared up and headed down to the docks. The gear was relatively minimal. A quick stop to Nantucket Tackle helped me become the

The idea of “winter landscapes” on Nantucket can sometimes conjure up something dreary. Since we often lack the winter white blanket covering other parts of New England, barren branches and bitter winds can make for a seemingly inhospitable landscape.
Adding a pop of color and some wildlife forage to this landscape is the wonderful winterberry holly.
Winterberry, Ilex verticilata, is a deciduous, native shrub of the edges of bogs and wet places. On Nantucket, it can go underappreciated or undetected throughout most of the year. From Thanksgiving through New Years, however, it is the star of the shrubbery show.
Winterberry is a member of the holly family, but, unlike other members of this family, the winterberry leaves are not pointed or evergreen. The white flowers in June are inconspicuous, and for most of the season you’ll see a dark green shrub with a decent height (generally 6-10 feet).
Once autumn arrives, the story changes. This multi-stemmed shrub is covered with a magnificent display of brightly colored berries (technically drupes) that contrast with the dark leaves. As the season progresses, the foliage colors up to a yellowish color and drops leaving the naked branches to display the red berries in their full glory. That’s when the scarlet berries pop out in a muted late fall/winter landscape. These small, fire engine-red clusters of berries are showstoppers among the surrounding barren twigs and branches.
Around Nantucket, look for the brilliant red berries when driving or walking past marshy areas in particular. These plants naturally occur in forested wetlands as well as along the banks of ponds or other freshwater. As some say, these plants like “their feet wet,” meaning their roots adjacent to water. Winterberry still does well in well-drained soils, so keep it in mind as a landscape plant.
I once heard winterberry called a “living bird feeder,” and I can see why. When the berries first appear (in late summer) they are hard and unpalatable to wildlife, especially among the bountiful buffet offered by other late-summer plants. The berries take a while to soften up, so they are usually passed over by migratory birds passing through in late summer.

That’s why the berries last long into winter—just in time for our resident birds. By the time the berries soften, the birds are ready for their winter feasts. At this point, resident birds have already eaten the other more palatable fruits. Winterberry helps keep them going through the winter. Because of their high visibility in the winter landscape, the winterberry berries are easy for birds to spot. Often you will find several species of birds congregating on a winterberry bush for a feast. In fact, more than forty known species of North American birds rely on these berries as a part of their food source, including American Robins, Gray Catbirds, and Cedar Waxwings.
Deer may eat the berries too, as do squirrels, mice, and rabbits. The plant itself is generally considered deer-resistant, but, like many things, the deer find a way to have a taste. The shrubs can often be found in fountain shapes, as the deer browse the tips of lower branches. The shrubs end up much fuller at the top, where they have grown beyond the deer’s reach.
Winterberry is unique in that the fruits do not drop to the ground after they become ripe, they hang on to the stem and persist for weeks to months. Even under freeze and thaw cycles, the berries hang on. For this reason, they are called “persistent” fruits. Other shrubs with winter-persistent fruits include viburnum, crabapples, bayberry, hawthorns, and sumac.
Winterberry makes a great landscape plant both for the beauty and the wildlife benefit. It’s a win-win-win. First you get attractive greenery during the growing seasons, then a showy flush of berries around the holidays, and, finally, you get to enjoy all the birds that will be attracted to its berries later during the winter season. Planting winterberries is a good way to feed the birds in winter without filling the feeder. Think of all of the songbirds you can attract to the yard.
If considering planting in your own landscape, know that winterberry plants

ward a Gouin Village capital campaign to build employee housing and a new physical therapy space on hospital-owned land off Vesper Lane.
“We would like to thank the Nantucket community and beyond for your support in 2025, which allowed us to make the largest gift ever to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital,” said Mary Casey, Hospital Thrift Shop Executive Director.
Last year, the Thrift Shop donated $625,000, which allowed Nantucket Cottage Hospital to purchase a new bone density scanner, mammography system, and ultrasound equipment. These new devices have brought significant benefits to patients, notably doubling the hospital’s capacity for scheduling mammograms and ultrasounds.
“This year, we saw more donations than in the past which kept our inventory well stocked with treasures for all of our shoppers,” said Casey. “Thank you for your generosity which directly impacts our annual gift to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital"

Wrapping up its 96th year, the Hospital Thrift Shop presented a check this November to Nantucket Cottage Hospital totaling $660,000.
The Hospital Thrift Shop has donated more than $8 million to the hospital since its founding in 1929, when a group of dedicated volunteers came together to provide affordable clothes and household goods to our island community. Its first gift to the hospital that year was $603.
“The Thrift Shop continues to be a shining example of how community generosity transforms care on Nantucket,” said Amy Lee, president of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “Every donation, every purchase, and every volunteer hour directly supports our mission by helping us expand vital spaces like Physical Therapy and strengthen housing for our dedicated staff.”
This year’s donation of $660,000 is the most ever. The donation will go to-

Many have contributed to the success of the Hospital Thrift Shop, which is open from mid-May through mid-October: residents who donate gently used items, shoppers who get great deals, numerous volunteers who devote substantial time and energy, and a small staff who run the daily operation of this thriving organization.
“Our commitment to Nantucket’s community, and the community’s commitment to the shop, is evidenced by the generosity of our donors, by the diligence and dedication of our volunteers and staff, and by the enthusiasm of our shoppers,” said Pam Leinbach, president of the Thrift Shop Board of Directors. “As we approach our centennial, the Thrift Shop will continue its proud devotion to Nantucket’s residents and visitors by providing affordable goods and by donating the proceeds earned to NCH, to help care for both.”
It’s a tradition that continues to generate great returns for the community by providing affordable goods and for the hospital by providing ongoing financial support that will benefit Nantucket patients into the future.
“We are deeply grateful for the Thrift Shop’s unwavering commitment, which

proud owner of a couple of Yozuri squid jigs. These jigs are about two-and-a-half inches long. The jigs don’t have hooks on them: instead, they have something that resembles a tiny basket of sharpened metal pieces. The squid see the jig floating like an unsuspecting minnow. The squid approach the jig from below. The squid’s tentacles reach out and grab the jig and become impaled on the needle-like metal basket.
“It’s an easy way to get kids to get a bite, and it’s very visual, unlike the typical salt water fishing that we do.” Rafael Osona had posted some pictures of a recent squidding adventure with his two boys, Rafael and Sterling, along with four of their buddies. “We were just taking the opportunity to go have fun and enjoy the Nantucket stuff we love so much. It’s a shoulder season activity for us. We enjoy eating the squid and the kids still enjoy using squid for bait (scup and stripers) so it’s a great opportunity to stock up on food, bait, and having fun doing it!”
Oh, by the way—there’s a fantastic new late season fishing tournament that was put together this year: The Big Bass Brawl. This tournament is for the hardy late-season fishers. It ran from October 24 to November 17. Anglers would submit pictures of their three biggest striped bass (measured by length). This tournament was developed by Bobby King, an avid beach fisher, along with Matt Peel. Nice work, guys! The inaugural tournament winner was our squidding buddy Rafael Osona. He had himself a night in late October, catching his three winning fish in about a half hour of striper madness! Dr. Greg Chotkowski, another beach fishing madman, caught the last beach striped bass of the year on November 10. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Bobby and Matt for finding a way to get folks bundled up, off the couch, and out onto the beaches!
Now, let’s get back to squidding. Squidding is a lot of fun, it’s great for kids, and it provides the main ingredient for a wonderful meal. And it may be the coolest first date activity on Nantucket. Just sayin’…

are dioecious, meaning that individual plants may be male or female. Only the female plants produce berries. The male plants supply the pollen to fertilize the female’s flowers so that berries are produced. Unless plants are in bloom or have berries, it is not possible to tell males from females. When in bloom, the female flowers have tiny, green immature berries in the center while the males have fluffy, yellow, pollen-bearing anthers. So, if you plant these in your yard, be sure to have at least a few males to pollinate the female, berry-bearing plants. Those who find little or no berry production may not have a male pollinator plant. Now that it’s the holiday season, winterberry shines among the dull grays of

our island. The red baubles of the berries are like nature’s holiday decorations. That’s what makes them so attractive for tablescapes and other household decor.
If you do decide to decorate with winterberry this season and are planning to clip your own, please follow the general rules of foraging. First of all, make sure you have permission from the landowners. Each island environmental organization has different policies and practices regarding foraging on their properties, so ask before you go. Take only what you will use, leave enough for the remaining population to easily recover—no need to decimate a plant! Do as little damage to the wild plants as possible when foraging. To use a sprig of winterberry, there is no need to kill a whole plant. When done with the decor, discard branches outside where birds and other wildlife can still enjoy what’s left of the berries.
It is important to note that although winterberry is an abundant source of food for wildlife, the berries are poisonous and extremely toxic to humans if consumed.
Enjoy nature’s bounty this season! See you on the trails…

“I have one client with mobility issues who, instead of traveling, now purchases from me art that she sees on my Instagram,” Foster explains. “She calls me, I discuss it with her, and then ship it to her.” It’s an arrangement that combines the convenience of online browsing with the trust and knowledge of a decades-long relationship.
But Foster’s reinvention as an Art Purveyor goes far beyond remote transactions. His mobile services will bring the gallery experience—and more—directly into clients’ homes and businesses, offering a comprehensive suite of services that includes art sales, representation, consulting, curating, placement, and delivery. He will even assist with de-acquisitioning of art that no longer serves a client’s space or style.
Interior designers have long known what homeowners often discover too late: sourcing and placing artwork is one of the most challenging aspects of finishing a space. “More than one has told me that one of the hardest things in interior design is the art,” Foster notes, reflecting on his years of collaboration with island designers.
His new model addresses this challenge with a methodical yet intuitive approach. First, he visits the home to view the space. Then he takes time to get to know both the physical environment and the homeowners themselves: their tastes, their lifestyle, how they use each room. With this understanding, he makes recommendations on how to display existing artwork and suggests new pieces that would enhance the space. Finally, he hangs the art himself, ensuring every piece is positioned precisely where it belongs.
It’s a combination of curator and consultant, dealer and installer—roles that might seem disparate but that Foster, with his decades of experience, weaves together seamlessly. He knows how to handle art, how to hang it, how to display it. These aren’t minor skills; they’re the difference between art that transforms a space and art that simply occupies a wall.
“I did it this year for a couple of clients,” Foster says of his early experiences as an Art Purveyor. “Delivered the art, brought it into the house, helped them decide position...It makes it much easier for the buyer to make decisions.”
Foster’s transition from brick-and-mortar to mobile doesn’t mean he will abandoning a gallery’s role of supporting artists. If anything, it deepens those connec-

tions. He’ll continue representing both on-island and off-island artists: acting as the crucial link between creators and collectors. His deep experience in the field gives him unique insights from both perspectives. He has often shared his impressions and practical wisdom with artists as an informal advisor: making recommendations to artists from a buyer’s perspective about framing trends, how to prepare artwork for hanging, and details that can make the difference between a sale and a pass. “It’s the kind of business acumen that only comes from years of watching what works and what doesn’t, what clients respond to and what leaves them cold,” Foster explained.
For homeowners, Foster offers a direct connection to island artists. Rather than serving as a gatekeeper, he’s become a facilitator, introducing clients to the creators whose work might be perfect for their space. With Nantucket’s vibrant artist community, these connections can transform a home’s ambiance and enhance a collector’s relationship with the island.
What animates Foster most about this new chapter isn’t the business model, it’s the intimacy of the experience. Where a traditional gallery creates distance between dealer, artist, and buyer, his role as an Art Purveyor collapses those boundaries. Foster gets to be present for the moment when a piece finds its home, when the perfect piece of art completes a room, and when a collector discovers an artist whose work speaks to something they didn’t know they were seeking.
“This business model fits well with the way that art aficionados now purchase their art,” he acknowledges. But it adds something that digital transactions can never provide: the human element, the expertise, the eye that notices when a painting is slightly askew and knows exactly how to make it right.
For art lovers, Foster’s transformation means losing a familiar gallery but gaining a trusted guide who comes to them, who understands their spaces and their tastes, who can navigate the island’s rich artistic landscape on their behalf. It’s a trade that reflects how we now live—less tethered to physical locations, more connected through personal relationships.
His new business model is “still evolving”—for an Art Guy who’s spent three decades perfecting his craft, this evolution isn’t an end, it’s a new beginning.

Nantucket is widely known for its festivals: we celebrate daffodils in April, wine and food in May, books and screenwriters in June, comedy, gardens, yoga, and dance the rest of the summer. Just when we think the season is over, the Nantucket Historical Association lights up their Whaling Museum with their Festival of Wreaths followed by their Festival of Trees.
The Festival of Wreaths Preview Party and Silent Auction Kickoff is Monday, November 24, from 5 to 7 pm and is the Nantucket Historical Association’s (NHA) first celebration of the holiday season. Tickets to the preview party are $120 ($75 for NHA members) at nha.org or by calling 508-228-1894.
Opening to the public on Tuesday, November 25, the annual Festival of Wreaths features an array of about 80 unique and beautiful wreaths handcrafted by local residents, businesspeople, organization members, and schoolchildren on display during the week of Thanksgiving. Wreaths of many sizes made from a wide variety of materials are featured. From traditionally decorated greens to unconventional materials, all of the Festival of Wreaths entries capture the creativity of Nantucketers.
Visitors may bid on their favorite wreaths in a silent auction to benefit the NHA's year-round outreach efforts. This year, there will again be an online component to the Festival of Wreaths, so those not on-island can view the wreaths and bid. The online Festival of Wreaths goes live November 25: click the link at nha.org.
This festival is closed Thanksgiving Day, but reopens on Friday, November 28 through Saturday, November 29, 10 am to 4 pm. Entry is through the Peter Foulger building to the left of the Whaling Museum entrance.
This display in the Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street is free to the community, so attendees may visit and revisit favorite wreaths to increase their bids and their chances of winning. Winning bids will be announced on the last day of the Festival of Wreaths, Saturday, November 29. Bidders do not need to be present to win.
One week later, on Thursday, December 4, the NHA is hosting a Festival of Trees Preview Party from 6 to 8 pm. At press time, tickets were still available at nha.org, but act quickly as this event always sells out.
Friday, December 5, the NHA’s annual Festival of Trees opens to the public, with the Whaling Museum transformed into a festive winter wonderland for the rest of December. More than 90 trees—modern and traditional, whimsical and serene—trimmed with photographs, symbols, artwork, scrimshaw, and more will be side-by-side with trees made from origami and trees constructed with inventive materials. The creativity always astounds in this festive display.
The NHA’s Festival of Trees began in 1994 as one of several events that celebrated the organization’s centennial anniversary. The event was held at various NHA properties over the years, and permanently moved to the Whaling Museum after the museum’s 2005 renovation. With so many tree and creative designs every year, it is one of the most anticipated events of the island’s holiday season.
Admission to the Festival of Trees from 10 am to 4 pm Monday through Saturday (plus Stroll Sunday, December 7) is with the regular admission fee to the museum. On December 9 and 11, the NHA is inviting island residents to special Community Nights from 5 to 7 pm with music and performances amongst the trees, free of charge.
The Festival of Trees will be closed Thursday, December 25, for Christmas Day and will reopen on Friday, December 26.
