Funniest Weekend on Nantucket

The annual Nantucket Comedy Festival brings top comedic talent to Nantucket for three days of laughter on July 10, 11, and 12.

The 2025 festival opens at the Dreamland Theater on Thursday at 7 pm with a beloved tradition: an evening spotlighting incredibly funny female comedians. This year’s Women’s Night of Comedy features nationally headliners Ariel Elias, Gina Brillon, and Mia Jackson. This hilarious event is a high-energy start to the festival every year.

As a major fundraiser for Stand Up & Learn™ (SUL)—a year-round educational program that teaches kids life skills through comedy—the festival is proud to highlight young performers. On Friday, July 11 at 4 pm, the talented SUL Kids take over the brand-new Nantucket Performing Arts Center stage for a free, family-friendly show showcasing the comedic skills they’ve developed.

Later that evening, at 6 pm in the Dreamland, Nantucket Comedy Festival stars hail from north of the border, bringing the sharp wit and perspective that make Canadian comedians beloved around the world. This wildly funny evening will shine a spotlight on the humor that makes Canada uniquely funny. O Canada! Comedy is a fresh addition to the Fest with an all-star lineup including Aaron Berg, Ian Bagg, and Ophira Eisenberg.

The laughs keep going at the Friday Night After Party at Cisco Brewers from 8 to 10 pm. Mingle with comedians, hear outrageous behind-the-scenes stories from the road, and enjoy bonus performances from festival favorites and a few surprise guests.

On Saturday night, July 12 at 7 PM, it’s the comedy showdown of the summer as top comedians from Boston and New York go head-to-head during SmACKdown, the final event of the 2025 Nantucket Comedy Festival. Emceed by hometown comedian Brian Glowacki, the punches will be kept funny and (mostly) above the belt as these two legendary cities battle for bragging rights. The lineup includes Drew Dunn, Jon Fisch, and Juston McKinney batting for Boston against Big Apple comedians Brian Scott McFadden, Paul Ollinger, and Ted Alexandro.

Nantucket Comedy Festival shows sell out every year, so buy your tickets to the shows and the after party now at NantucketComedy.com/attend. And sign up for the NCF Newsletter to be the first to know about NCF events and activities, comedians, Stand Up and Learn shows.

Nantucket by Design Public Pop-Ups

Nantucket by Design, an annual event presented by the Nantucket Historical Association, celebrates Nantucket's design heritage, intertwining modern style with island history through talks, panels, master classes, and social gatherings.

This year, the five-day experience includes free pop-up events at various historic properties, along with special events also open to the public hosted by Nantucket by Design partners.

Three very special NHA Decorative Arts Demonstrations are being hosted by Nantucket by Design partner Eleish Van Breems Home at their waterfront location, 14 Easy Street. Stop by at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 15, for a demonstration of the art of basket weaving, a Nantucket tradition that weaves together history, art, and iconic island style. On July 16 at 2 pm, all are welcomed to a textile demonstration of traditional hand-blocked fabric. And at 2 pm on July 17, NHA Decorative Arts team will demonstrate the art of the shell in Sailors Valentines.

From July 14 to 17, day-long events will be held at three historic NHA properties. At the Hadwen House, 96 Main Street, relax in style with Handy & Dalliare and enjoy lite bites with Island Kitchen—two of Nantucket’s icons of event style and leaders in entertainment—along with Tillett Textiles.

At the NHA’s beautiful Greater Light, 8 Howard Street, from 10 am to 5 pm July 15 to 18, an exploration of luxury handcrafts will be held where guests can shop beautiful finds from heritage brands and local artisans. In addition, four engaging workshops will be offered by Alpha Kilo, presented with Joe Waroquier HOME, as they launch their inaugural Work/Shop Nantucket. To RSVP for the workshops, visit alphakilo.com/workshop.

At the NHA’s 1800 House at 4 Mill Street, visitors can step into Porte + Hall’s elevated collection of indoor and outdoor mats, with a selection of Pennoyer Newman planters and home decor from Nina Liddle Design, in a lush garden setting. For more details on these open events and on the Nantucket by Design experience, visit NantucketbyDesign.com. You might even find a last-minute ticket or two to some of the sensational panels being presented during the 2025 event.

Generations of Farming Island Fresh Flavors

For many Nantucketers, summer doesn’t officially start until that first bite of Bartlett’s sweet corn, so fresh you can eat it raw—and if you ask the Bartlett family, that’s exactly how they prefer it.

Corn season is just around the corner, with Bartlett’s signature sweet corn expected to be ready for harvest by midJuly: one of the busiest times of year on Nantucket’s oldest and largest farm.

“The freshness, the sweetness, it’s unmatchable,” said Keegan Bartlett, Sales and Promotions Manager at the farm.

Head grower and sixth generation farmer Dave Bartlett, who has worked on the farm since he was six, credits the corn’s especially sweet flavor to Nantucket’s unique geographic position and coastal climate. “All of our produce has a distinct flavor, as opposed to anything that you're going to buy at a supermarket or from off island,” he explained, “We're sitting 30 miles out to sea and with the fog and the salt air … it just picks up that sweeter taste.”

Sweet corn isn’t the only thing growing at Bartlett’s. Tomatoes begin ripening in late May and last through September, alongside cut flowers, peppers, melons, and other summer staples that round out the season and stock the shelves inside the farm’s market.

Bartlett’s Farm has been a proud, family-run operation for seven generations, dating back to the early 1800s, when William Bartlett first settled on Nantucket.

What began as a modest subsistence farm has blossomed into Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm, an island institution since its incorporation in 1843. Today, it remains a pillar of the Nantucket community, providing fresh, locally-grown produce and using sustainable farming practices that honor its rich heritage.

Bartlett’s is also leading the way in organic and sustainable agriculture. It’s currently the only farm on Nantucket with certified organic and GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certified fields and is in the process of transitioning the rest of its acreage—a project Dave has helped lead.

Although not yet 100% certified organic due to the complexity and cost of the process, Bartlett’s prioritizes organic and regenerative methods across its entire operation.

“It doesn't matter if we're producing it conventionally or organically. We have 60, 70 years of institutional knowledge and have been growing on our land for the last 180 years,” said Dave. “So we take care of our soils, we take care of our environment, and, for us, that's sustainable.”

Bartlett’s environmental values extend beyond the soil. The farm’s commitment to renewable energy began in the early 1980s when it first partnered with a wind energy company to explore turbine development on the farm. Although federal tax cuts halted the project, the idea stuck. Today, the seven acres of solar panels on the farm’s property offset 100% of the farm’s energy needs while avoiding the emission of 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide per year, according to the farm’s website. Excess power gets sent back to the grid.

The farm’s approach blends generations of passed-down knowledge with modern science and up-to-date agricultural research, said Keegan.

Beyond farming, Bartlett’s is woven into island life. From churches and schools to the farm truck on Main Street, the farm has long been part of the island’s social and economic fabric. “To have local suppliers, local vendors, local people that you get to see at the football game on Friday—I think that's really important,” said Keegan.

Going Out after Togs

Not to divulge big secrets, but when I’m not taking people out beach fishing, I spend some time working with my buddy Mike Ramos. Mike is a master plumber. He often needs a hand while turning on / closing down houses for the seasons. I have a blast working with Mike, playing the role of “plumber’s monkey.” And a real fine monkey I am, if I do say so myself!

Back in late April of this year I was actively engaged in monkey business when I received a call from our buddy Josh Sandsbury. Josh, also a master plumber, had decided that the beautiful and unseasonably warm April day was the perfect day for cutting out of work a bit early to do some tautog fishing. Josh said, “I’m at the Children’s Beach dock with the Whaler ready to launch. I’ve got all the fishing gear. Where are you?” Well, at that moment, I was in the second floor master bathroom of a house that was built back when wigs and wooden teeth were in vogue, putting a toilet back together. Yeah, fishing sounded like a good idea, but I had to finish the job. We agreed that Josh would head out to the end of the Jetties and hit me back up if he was having any luck.

I was intrigued by the idea of catching tautog. They weren’t a species that was frequently targeted by Nantucket anglers, and I had never caught one. That had to change. I also knew that my friend Dr. Frank O’Conner was absolutely obsessed with tog fishing. Frank had spent many years in Newport while in the Navy, and the rocky areas of the Narragansett Bay and Newport harbor were perfect territory for chasing after these tasty blackfish. When you need answers, you ask smart friends, right? Dr. O’Conner did not disappoint:

“Tautog are caught wherever there is structure like rocks, jetties, piers, and wrecks. The usual bait is green crabs, as the tog feed on crabs with a thick jaw and primitive teeth. From a boat, you anchor unless you have an electric motor with GPS that can keep you in the same spot. The tautog nibble with a subtle bite, and you need to let them bite a little before setting the hook. The big boys will often bite once and pretty much set the hook. Tog are muscular and compact fish that will take you into the rocks when hooked. Lots of broken lines if you’re not quick enough or if you tangle in the structure. Fishing is pretty much done by bouncing a heavy jig with bait attached off the bottom. I use a double hook with a weight in the middle, but it’s also common to use a colored weighted single hook. Green crabs are the best bait. I pull the front claws off of the crab and cut the crab body in half. You can fish a whole crab but you won’t get as many bites. However, whole crabs tend to land bigger fish.”

Josh and I had been discussing the possibility of tautog fishing for a couple of weeks. Josh had set some traps in the hope of catching some green crabs. He was marginally successful but did not catch enough for a full fishing trip. We reached out to guys that had experience around the island. Kevin Ramos told us that he did well with heavy gauge tautog jigs baited with shrimp. Nantucket Tackle had the jigs and Stop and Shop had the shrimp. Josh and I figured we were in business!

This entire tautog fishing adventure had a significant plumbing connection. Josh and I had first heard about tautog being around Nantucket from Tyler O’Brien when Tyler was helping us out at Plumber’s Supply. Tyler had caught some off of the docks in the early spring. And Kevin Ramos is a Nantucket firefighter and also a plumber. So it seemed quite natural that Josh would steal me away from the wild world of plumbing to go chase tautog.

“Steven,” (yeah, Josh is the only person out there who calls me Steven) “are you done with that house yet? I’ve caught three tog already, and two are keepers! I’ll swing back and pick you up at the dock. Grab another bag of shrimp.”

That was all the motivation I needed. Mike and I finished double-checking that the house was in good order. He agreed to drop me off in town. We tried to talk Mike into fishing but he had a previous engagement scheduled. He was kind enough to lend me his sweatshirt (thanks, Mike), and I bombed into the downtown supermarket, bought a two-pound bag of frozen shrimp and hiked over to Old North Wharf. Josh was there, as promised. I hopped into his 17-foot Boston Whaler and we headed for the Jetties.

Secrets of the Ditch

The Madaket Ditch...it doesn’t have a very sexy name, but it is one of the most fascinating and vital parts of the western end of our island. For something so essential to the water quality of Long Pond, it is an often-missed feature of the landscape. Most islanders and visitors have never even seen it.

This is actually a story of landscape legacy effects, how alterations to the land can still be seen 350 years later. It starts with two groups of people altering the landscape to sustain themselves. And what was human-created centuries ago is now part of the island’s cultural heritage.

The Madaket Ditch is a human-created tidal creek that runs east-west, connecting Long Pond on the east side to Hither Creek on the western end. The Ditch is about a mile long and is mostly straight, though there are a few hitches and meanders along the way.

50,000 More for the 50th Anniversary

Nantucket is famous for its millions of gorgeous daffodils that bloom across our island from late March through May and for the Nantucket Daffodil Festival held year during the last weekend in April to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Now through August, the Nantucket Garden Club is holding a raffle to raise funds to plant 50,000 more daffodil bulbs this autumn for the festival’s 50th anniversary in 2026. Club members are working with the Town of Nantucket to find appropriate locations for the mass plantings.

According to club member Mary Malavase, one of our island’s daffodil experts and a daffodil show judge here and at other shows around the country, this new planting will continue and stay true to Jean MacAusland’s vision. MacAusland started the Nantucket Daffodil Festival in 1974, to beautify our island and give Nantucket a spring boost. Then president of the Nantucket Garden Club, and a seasonal resident of the island since 1951, MacAusland chose daffodils because “they have long life and because deer and rabbits don’t eat them...It took her a few years to plant her goal of a million bulbs,” Malavase reminisced.

Because daffodils require a period of cold temperatures (a chilling period) to trigger their flowering cycle, the bulbs purchased from this Nantucket Garden Club Planting Fund will be put in the ground in November to bloom next spring. Raffle tickets are just $10 each, and the prize is a beautiful 18" x 15" framed original oil painted by island artist G. S. Hill. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn on August 20, 2025. Raffle tickets are for sale now (cash or local check only) at the G.S Hill Gallery, 40 Straight Wharf.

Million Dollar Quartet on TWN Stage

Get ready to shake, rattle, and roll as Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents the electrifying musical Million Dollar Quartet, running through August 23. This powerhouse production brings to life one of the most legendary jam sessions in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Set on a memorable day in 1956, it tells the true story of a once-in-a-lifetime meeting between Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins at Sun Records in Memphis. What started as a chance encounter became a night that changed music history.

This is not just a jukebox musical: it’s a living, breathing concert. The actors are phenomenal musicians, and they’re playing every note live. It's like witnessing the birth of rock ‘n’ roll right in front of your eyes—no backing tracks, no trick, just raw, undeniable talent and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll.

Seth Meyers to Perform

Comedian and writer Seth Meyers will be performing live on Nantucket Tuesday, August 19 at the Nantucket Performing Arts Center (NPAC) in two special stand-up comedy performances. Tickets for the 6 pm and the 8:30 pm shows are available at NantucketPerformingArts.org or by calling 508-680-0003.

“When we started Nantucket Performing Arts Center—which somehow feels like both five years and five minutes ago—we chose the name intentionally,” said NPAC Executive Director Drew Kowalkowski. “While our initial programming has been focused on theater, our vision is to present the full breath of the performing arts to audiences on Nantucket, bringing world-class artists to the island while becoming a year-round resource for the island community. We’re proud to bring one of the most acclaimed voices in comedy to our intimate stage this summer.”

Seth Meyers is an Emmy Award-winning writer, New York Times bestselling author, and host of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” since 2014.

Meyers began his TV career with “Saturday Night Live” in 2001 where he was a cast member for 13 seasons. He served as head writer for 9 seasons and “Weekend Update” anchor for 8. He has released two critically acclaimed stand-up specials to date: “Lobby Baby” (Netflix) and “Seth Meyers: Dad Man Walking” (HBO/Max.) In all, Meyers has garnered 33 Emmy nominations for his work in television.

In addition to his onscreen success, Meyers is a New York Times bestselling author, having published his first picture book “I’m Not Scared, You’re Scared,” in 2022. He currently co-hosts two podcasts: “Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers,” alongside his brother Josh Meyers and “The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast,” with Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.

Meyers performs stand-up to sold out crowds across the country and coheadlines a monthly residency with John Oliver at New York’s Beacon Theatre.

NPAC is Nantucket’s newest destination for the arts. The newly-formed nonprofit organization acquired the property that was formerly home to the White Heron Theatre in April of this year. Previously-announced programmingincludes the plays “What the Constitution Means to Me (now running through July 17) and Theatre People (August 1-14) and the concert “A Night For Swifties” (July 9-11). The organization is approximately halfway through a $12 million capital campaign to purchase the property, preserve it as a space for the performing arts, renovate it to accommodate a wider range of events and community uses, and ensure its operation for years to come, including year-round programming and partnerships with other local arts organizations.

Generations of Farming

eration Bartlett, emphasized the importance of keeping the farm in the family. “It ensures that we keep the land doing what it’s always been doing: farming using sustainable practices and feeding the community,” he said.

Bartlett’s also works to reduce food waste by donating excess produce to the Nantucket Food Pantry, giving away fruits, vegetables, and unsold goods that are still fresh and safe to eat.

For Dave, farming is a lifestyle. “I love what I do. You have to love farming,” he said. “It's incredibly hard. It's incredibly unpredictable, the weather, the wildlife, disease, everything.”

Throughout the summer, Bartlett’s invites visitors out into the fields to take part in pick-your-own tours, where they can gather their own bouquets of seasonal flowers and harvest fresh vegetables straight from the soil—a hands-on glimpse into the daily rhythm of island farming.

As the farm evolves with new organic certifications and renewable energy, its core values remain the same: growing food with care, stewarding the land, and feeding the island it’s called home for generations.

“Simply said, we want to do things that are good for the island and each other.”

Bartlett’s Farm Flower Tours begin on July 16, and their Veggie Tours start on July 17. Tickets are available at BartlettsFarm.com. Private tours for up to 30 guests can also be arranged. Bartlett’s Farm Market is open daily from 8 am to 7 pm in-season. Their Garden Center is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm.

Going Out after Togs

from page 7

Josh filled me in as we motored out. “These things are great bait stealers. Keep in contact with the jig. When you hit them to set the hook, you’ve got to get them up quickly or they’ll break your line off in the rocks.”

Per usual, Josh had given me good advice. I missed the first couple of bites but finally hooked and boated my first ever tautog. It didn’t quite measure 16 inches, the requirement to keep a tog, so after a quick photo op it was returned to the ocean. Wow, those fish are strong! And slimy. Yeah, tautog are about the slimiest fish that I’ve ever encountered. The next bite was very close to the rocks, and the fish broke me off. “You’ve got to be quicker than that, Steven!”

Josh and I had a blast for about an hour, catching another half dozen fish. Josh kept three to cook and all others were released. As we headed back to the dock, we saw a boat anchored near the western jetty with a dive flag flying. Josh guessed that it may be his friend Matt, who often spearfishes for tog.

A couple of days later, Josh took his nine-year-old daughter Avery down to the docks to see if they could catch some tog off of Straight Wharf, just as Tyler had. They were successful, and Avery had a wonderful time with her dad.

I’m grateful to Josh for introducing me to this fantastic new species. It’s easy to see how tog fishing has become a favorite of so many fishers. Josh reported that the fish was as good to eat as he’d ever had, all the more reason to want to get back after them. Dr. O’Conner told me that the fall tautog fishing is the best. Can’t wait to find out!

Secrets of the Ditch

The Madaket Ditch and the connection to Long Pond changed the system from a freshwater pond to a brackish, tidally influenced body of water. The anadromous fish migrate into these waters in the spring to spawn (shad, alewives). The catadromous fish (American eels) migrate the opposite direction, heading out to sea to spawn. Madaket Ditch has turned the Long Pond watershed into one of the true estuaries of Nantucket Island.

So where did the Madaket Ditch come from and who built it? According to town records, in 1659, an agreement was struck between the English settlers and the native Wampanoag. Of course, we know who wrote the history, so we must take this with a grain of historic salt. According to a document with the Nan-

tucket Registry of Deeds (later translated by Elizabeth Little in 1986), the agreement was struck between the two parties to dig a “trench to drain the Long Pond.” This trench would serve two purposes: for fishing and for the creation of a salt meadow. The work was to be divided equally between the “English Inhabitants” and the Wampanoag, and they would split the spoils that resulted from their work with one caveat: “So long as they (presumably the Wampanoag) attended the weir carefully and honestly.”

The fishing weirs were a series of framed nets that crisscrossed the ditch to capture the running migratory fish. This method was adopted from the Wampanoag methods. In fact, the Wampanoag had shared knowledge of the life cycles of eels and alewives with the newly arrived English settlers. Once dug, the ditch would bring more fish further inland, thus creating more fishing habitat and increasing the resource.

The ditch was dug in 1665, six years after the original agreement was struck. What I haven’t found in my (limited) research so far is anything about how the ditch was actually dug. Did the two groups start on opposite sides and work towards each other? Did they start in the middle and work towards the respective water bodies? Was it truly collaborative with mixed work crews? Who was in charge? How was the start and end point decided? At this point, there are almost more questions than answers.

What we do know is that it was a success. Or, at least, the original goals were achieved. Fish weirs were constructed, and fish were caught. The salt marsh habitat (i.e. the desired salt meadow) was ex-

panded and salt hay (the saltmarsh grasses) was harvested for sheep fodder. However, the success was limited, at least for the Wampanoag. In 1676 the property rights along the ditch were transferred to the proprietors (the English leaders), and fishing rights were taken from Wampanoag. But the Madaket Ditch continued to be productive.

Over time, the Madaket Ditch remained an important fishing source for islanders. In 1841, the Town widened the ditch and set fishing regulations. In the late 1800s a committee was formed, and the Lond Pond and Madaket Ditch Report was submitted by the Committee at the Annual Town Meeting in 1882. The report stated that the Ditch had become clogged. After a lengthy discussion, the question was raised about whether the Town of Nantucket allocated the necessary funds to clear it. Also discussed was the issue of ownership of Nantucket ponds. That story is for another day, but this article by historian Frances Karttunen written for the Nantucket Historical Association details some of the legalities nha.org/research/nantucket-history/history-topics/what-was-the-hot-topic-fornantucket-government-in-1882 .

Well into the twentieth century, harvesting of herring and eels was conducted by dip net and eel spear along the banks of the Ditch. There are many tales of island families ice fishing for eels in winter in Hitcher Creek or points along the Madaket Ditch. Herring are now protected with a moratorium in place on their harvest, but the Ditch remains active.

In the intervening decades, Madaket Ditch has been dredged, widened, and expanded via offshoot trenches. While there is no current plan for dredging the Ditch, there have been some recent calls to do so. The Nantucket Coastal Resiliency Plan (adopted by the Town in 2021) calls for raising of Madaket Road, potentially increasing culverts, and overall ecological restoration to the are—a plan that could also involve improvements to the Ditch.

Today, the Madaket Ditch is one of Nantucket’s only true functioning estuaries. It functions like a tidal creek, connecting Madaket Harbor and Hither Creek all the way to Long Pond. The narrow, sometimes meandering channel still brings

saltwater into Long Pond with each tide and flushes water out on the outgoing tide, thus flushing Long Pond at regular intervals four times a day. The ditch now runs through approximately 50 acres of functioning salt marsh, which serve as a nutrient sink for the pond. The marsh intercepts an appreciable amount of nutrients before they reach the creek and the harbor. It is estimated that it takes 76 days for the whole of Long Pond to turn over completely via tidal exchange. Without the Ditch, many wonder what the water quality of Long Pond would be like. Other Nantucket ponds, Sesachacha and Hummock, are episodically opened to the ocean manually. Long Pond is our only Great Pond that is connected to the ocean consistently—a true estuary.

At a time when salt marshes are prized for their ability to filter water and to protect uplands from storm surge and other impacts of climate change, how can we say that the long-ago alteration of habitat is a negative?

In 2023, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation initiated a project to look at the tidal flow of the Long Pond watershed. That study is on-going, but more people caring about and investigating this estuary is always a plus. The Town of Nantucket takes regular water quality samples from the estuary, and the full report looking at trends over the years can be found here on the Town’s website: manantucket.civicplus.com/723/Harbors-Ponds. The Nantucket Conservation Foundation included the Madaket Ditch in their American Eel study (2024-present) involving community members in learning more about our cultural heritage, the water bodies, and the eels.

Access to Madaket Ditch is somewhat limited. Much of the land surrounding the Ditch is private with conservation easements, thus protecting the integrity of the ditch. Sections are owned by various conservation organizations including the Town, Nantucket Land Bank, and the Madaket Conservation Association. The Land Bank properties towards Hither Creek are the public’s best bet for getting to the Ditch.

This spring, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, in collaboration with the Nantucket Land Bank, ran several public programs about the Ditch, its ecology and history. Every single field trip filled to capacity, suggesting that people are interested in this unique aspect of island life. We hope to run more of these field trips in the fall of 2025.

It’s on my personal summer bucket list to navigate the Ditch via kayak. I’ll certainly record the journey when I do.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
