An Island Collaboration to Ignite Curiosity and Inspire Learning

The Nantucket Atheneum is expanding its educational offerings with the launch of The Pass(port) Program, a new initiative offering free museum and experiential passes to library patrons. Library cardholders — both year-round residents and visitors — can borrow passes for complimentary admission to select island museums and Nantucket locations of note.

Each pass admits 4 to 6 people free of charge and is available for a one-time checkout per family per year at the library. Only one pass may be checked out at a time. Quantities are limited and available first-come, first-served. Because the passes are for single-day use and cannot be renewed, patrons are encouraged to visit the Atheneum early to fully enjoy their experiences.

Cardholders should return the passes on or before the due date and in good condition for others to use. Passes should be returned to the library desk in person: do not return passes in the book drop.

This program aims to ignite curiosity, inspire learning, and ensure greater access to Nantucket’s rich cultural offerings. “Our goal is to make art, history, and education more accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstance,” said Lisa Lothian, Head of Outreach Services. “We are deeply grateful to our partners who share our vision for equity and community enrichment.”

This collaborative effort is made possible through the generosity and cooperation of local museums and organizations. Maria Mitchell Association, Egan Maritime Institute, and the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge are the founding members of this initiative. Each is committed to enhancing public access to their exhibits and experiences. The Atheneum believes that supporting shared knowledge strengthens the entire island community.

Any Nantucket Atheneum library cardholder may check out one of The Pass(port) Program passes for a day. Library cards are free to all who apply in person or at nantucket-atheneum.clamsnet.org/MyAccount/eCARD.

A Mix of Imagination and Craftsmanship

In our town known for its historic authenticity and vibrant arts scene, The Gallery at Four India is hosting a captivating exhibit of exceptional craftsmanship featuring imaginative Steampunk sculptures of renowned artist Bruce Rosenbaum. This exhibit offers a look into a fantastical and ornate universe not often seen in Nantucket galleries.

Few artists have captured the emotional essence of this art movement as masterfully as Bruce Rosenbaum, often called the "Steampunk Guru." Rosenbaum has transformed Steampunk from costume play into high art and functional design. The fantasy elements of his intricate sculptural pieces give them a definite WOW factor.

What sets Rosenbaum apart is his deep respect for both historical authenticity and modern utility. He sources genuine antique components, often spending months hunting for the perfect brass fittings or mechanical elements. This commitment to authenticity gives his work an emotional weight that modern fabrication cannot match—each piece carries the patina and history of its components.

Steampunk art captured the imagination of Kathleen Knight, art expert, collector, and owner of Gallery at Four India: “Ten years ago I brought the work of Bruce Rosenbaum to my gallery after seeing his mechanical whale at The Nantucket Hotel. I was so interested in knowing more about the artist and contacted him for a visit to his studio. That was the most amazing visit!” she explained. Rosenbaum’s home was “total Steampunk...he was living in the past of the Industrial Era with gas lamps, coal stoves, furnishings—even his attire was Victorian… it was a trip to the past.

“Soon after my visit, I attended his museum show at the Springfield Museum. It was the most exciting exhibition of time machines …hundreds of steampunk artists attended dressed in top hats, eye binoculars, Victorian clothing... I was continued on page 13

Time to Catch a Striper

I recently received a phone call from Mark Bradley, one of my dearest college buddies. He was in Florida, enjoying the glorious sunshine, when he found himself trying to explain to his golfing friends about the importance of catching the first striped bass of the year on Nantucket. Needless to say, the subtle nuances of this event were lost on his fellow snowbirds. This led to Mark calling me to make sure that he had a working knowledge of this matter.

I had to think about this for a moment. Why, exactly, is this first fish such a big deal? An enlightened thought soon warmed up my low-wattage brain, saying this: it signifies the end of winter. Not false spring, like some loopy flower that decides to pop up way too early. No, that first fish is a clear sign that the dreary winter is gone and things are going to get better.

Rafael Osona had a similar thought ten years ago and decided to build a fishing tournament around the concept. Thus, the Spring Sea Run fishing tournament was born. Rafael and his fellow fishing buddy Lonell Rodgers took off running with a great idea.

“We wanted to get the guys out of their winter dens, stop hibernating and get out on the beach getting after the fish,” Rafael told me. The tournament website ( Springsearunopener.com ) elaborates on this thought:

“This tournament is all about getting back outside and enjoying the best of what Nantucket has to offer while raising money for a local nonprofit organization.”

Having an ambitious plan was one thing. Making it successful took a lot of effort. Raf and Lonell got busy. Rafael rounded up sponsors. Lonell designed the logo, a takeoff on Paul Revere announcing “The stripers are coming!” Both guys spread the word throughout the dormant fishing community.

“The first year for me was really exciting because you wanted to be the first to get a bass at any size! Just making sure they had the sea lice!!” Lonell told me.

Sea lice? What’s up with that? According to WebMD, sea lice are “…tiny marine creatures, specifically small crustaceans known as copepods, that are ectoparasites primarily affecting fish.” The importance of sea lice in the context of

Call of the Osprey

A familiar sight along the harbor and around our many ponds, Ospreys are a common site as they dive for fish across the island. Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) are iconic on-island, a part of our maritime community. Also known as Fish Hawks, they are abundant on Nantucket this time of year, having migrated back this way in late March. While these majestic birds of prey are now a fixture of early spring and summer on the island, that was not always the case.

Today Ospreys can be found in all 50 states, but they are still a species in recovery. Like many birds of prey in our region, during the early 1950s-70s their numbers were suffering in large part to DDT and other pesticides. This pesticide was widely used throughout the U.S. and could bioaccumulate through the food chain and be stored in the fatty tissue of the bird. In New England and along the Atlantic Coast, the breeding population of Ospreys was reduced to just 10% of pre-DDT levels. In 1973, DDT was finally banned and legislation was passed protecting these birds. Since then, Osprey populations have rebounded due to various conservation efforts.

On Nantucket, the first recorded Osprey nest was found in 1979, and the population has grown every year since. Thanks to the work of researchers—especially the Maria Mitchell Association’s Dr. Robert Kennedy—we have valuable data on Nantucket’s Osprey population from 1979 to 2015. Since then, there hasn’t been a full survey of nests across the island, but lots of anecdotal observations.

You may recognize the nesting platforms of the Osprey found throughout the island. Just look at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) logo! For decades, it was “if you build it, they will come,” with birds quickly occupying newly constructed nest platforms. Beyond the platforms, Osprey have now expanded to a variety of nesting sites, including old trees (their original preference), rooftops, radio tower poles, and even beach dunes.

On my own nature walks and field trips on the LLNF property, people regularly ask about the Osprey. The two most popular questions: 1) How many Ospreys are there on island, and 2) if we keep building nest platforms will there just be more?

Celebrating 80 Years

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN), celebrated with a full year of programming including free educational workshops, a historic gala, the presentation of a lifetime achievement award, and a special three-week exhibition of pieces from our Permanent Collection in our downtown Big Gallery.

Robert Frazier, Artistic Director, shares AAN’s humble origins: “AAN was born out of necessity. The blossoming art colony of the 1920s and 30s faced a crisis when the lone exhibition gallery closed in 1943. The Artists Association of Nantucket was formed by artists and dedicated patrons in 1945 when the new association transformed an abandoned whaling-era warehouse on Straight Wharf (now the Big Gallery) into a new gallery space.”

Since then, AAN has showcased fine art in a range from projects by schoolaged students to exceptional works by professionals. The association has developed a museum-quality collection of historical island art, built and expanded its educational reach with the construction of the Visual Arts Center, and provided a kick start for many generations of artists.

Tracey Sears, Executive Director, invites the community to join the celebration: “From art talks and Sidewalk Art Shows to one-day workshops and a Permanent Collection exhibition, we’ve got something for everyone. We hope you will join us in our celebration of 80 years of local color on Nantucket.”

“We are so excited to celebrate AAN’s 80th anniversary, especially as it coincides with the opening of our new gallery space at 8 Federal Street,” shares Laurie Champion, Board President. “Right in the center of town, it’s hard to miss the colorful excitement of Nantucket’s artistic community.”

The mission of the Artists Association of Nantucket is to foster the visual arts on Nantucket. We create a vibrant arts community by promoting, supporting, and encouraging the work of Nantucket artists, providing educational programs in the arts, and preserving a legacy of Nantucket art.

To learn more about the AAN, visit the website at nantucketarts.org or follow our Instagram @ackartists. For information about AAN’s 2025 carefully crafted programs, call 508-228-0722.

hooked on bringing the art to my gallery. It was a mind-blowing exhibit, as most of the art back in 2014 was traditional painting. I can remember people wondering what the heck was I doing?” Knight reminisced.

“After many years, Bruce wandered back to my gallery last summer as he was visiting with Niles Parker at The Nantucket Whaling Museum to discuss a possible Steampunk installation in the museum for the near future. I invited him to bring back Steampunk to my gallery, and this season I have three unique sculptures to reintroduce the artist and the movement of Steampunk.

Rosenbaum has described Steampunk Art as an integration of history, art, and technology, with a sense of fantasy to tie it together. “It’s a sort of ‘what if’ — what if there had been modern technology during the Victorian Age…it’s about fusing the two periods.”

On Nantucket, where so many of the homes are historic and designed for coastal charm, a Steampunk accent can add a provocative touch. There's an emotional warmth to these pieces that stems from their tactile nature and obvious craftsmanship. It’s an aesthetic that evokes a sense of wonder and possibility that modern technology often obscures: where contemporary devices hide their complexity behind smooth screens and seamless cases, Steampunk art displays its inner workings.

define Steampunk aesthetics complement both traditional and modern color palettes. These pieces work beautifully against deep jewel tones, rich woods, and even stark white walls where they can serve as sculptural statements with character and craftsmanship—focal points that tell a story and spark conversation. And in the hands of masters like Bruce Rosenbaum, steampowered dreams become tangible realities with beauty, function, and story.

As May blossoms into June, art lovers can see works by a variety of new artists in the Gallery at Four India, including Sherre Wilson Lilegren, Robert Frazier, Barbara Bailey-Porter, David Aiazzi, Walter Horak, and Mauro Puccitelli. These creatives join the more than seven dozen painters, sculptors, photographers, glass artists, and craftpeople who exhibit regularly in Gallery at Four India.

The Gallery at Four India began in 1989 as a place where Knight could exhibit her collecting interests and to showcase artworks ahead of the curve. As Kathleen Knight says “I have had the pleasure of showcasing artworks from the Hudson River School, American Impressionist, Modernism, Abstract, Post War, Pop Art, Contemporary Fine Art Glass, and there is more to discover and exhibit.”

Watch for announcements of upcoming exhibits on GalleryatFourIndia.com and follow Kathleen @thegallerynantucket.

A new program launched this spring will help us try to answer those questions with real data, not just educational guessing. The Nantucket Osprey Watch Program is an exciting new community science effort led by the Linda Loring Nature Foundation to study and support the island’s Osprey population. This project relies on the help of community m embers to observe, document, and raise awareness for the Ospreys that nest across Nantucket. The project is the brainchild of LLNF’s Master Bird Bander, Libby Buck, who said that the motivation for starting the project began with the Massachusetts Osprey Working Group.

“The Massachusetts Osprey Working Group asked me to help create a census for the island since Nantucket’s Osprey population has not been well documented in recent years. I saw this as a great opportunity to turn it into a community science project, something that would involve people from across the island and allow everyone to contribute observations and be part of the research. Every summer, people fall in love with the Ospreys here, and now we have a way for those observations to come together as shared data,” said Buck.

The project began with a basic “call to arms” and public outreach. A kick-off meeting introduced the project and answered questions. The recording can be watched at llnf.org/virtualprograms/v/osprey-watch-info-2025. The great volunteer response shows how much our community really does love Ospreys.

So what does reporting on Osprey involve? It’s actually pretty easy, and even just one report provides valuable data. Volunteers are invited to “adopt a nest” and report activity once a week via a simple online form. You can even enter photos of what you’re seeing. There is a lot of great background info and educational materials on the website and mentorship from Buck and her team. Buck has tried to make it as easy as possible by allowing people to submit observations using forms at llnf.org/nantucket-osprey-watch Once submitted, the map updates to show the most recent activity.

Buck notes that the first goal for the 2025 season is to find and confirm all the nests across Nantucket. In coming years, bigger questions can be explored, such as how to attract more Ospreys, why certain nest poles are successful while others are not, and what Ospreys are really looking for when they choose a nest site. These are questions we can only answer together with more time and data.

The project establishes a baseline, and all of the information collected will be sent annually to the state working group. It also allows us on Nantucket to compare seasons and trends with other monitoring projects around Massachusetts. This project is about building a stronger understanding of our local population and being part of something larger across the region.

As of this writing, the project has confirmed 48 nest sites across the island, and that number continues to increase each week. Of those, 41 are active, 35 are in the incubation stage (sitting on eggs), and 3 are still in the nest-building phase. Click on any of the nest locations on the map on the website (indicated by stars) and you can see the latest activity report plus comments from observers. Of the 48 total nests, 33 are on constructed Osprey poles and 13 are in trees, which is

especially exciting to see. There is also one nest on a chimney and another on a radio tower. Buck said she has been pleasantly surprised by how many are choosing trees. It shows how adaptable Ospreys can be when they find the right conditions. The mix of nesting types is something she is paying close attention to as she and her team continue gathering reports. On-island, hatching could start any day now. If you are watching a nest, you might not see the chicks at first, but you will notice a shift in adult behavior. The male will be flying out for fish more frequently, and the female will stay closer, tearing food for the chicks. They will also become quite noisy and frantic. It is an exciting time to watch!

When asked for some highlights of the project so far, Buck emphasized that the volunteer turnout has been fantastic. In terms of the birds themselves, some interesting preliminary observations have already come out of this work. No Nantucket nests are on navigational buoys or on any high buildings or structures downtown. That stands out since many other coastal towns often have Ospreys nesting on buoys or on tall man-made structures, but that is not the case here. Instead, there seems to be a strong preference for the west end of the island. Buck speculates that that may be due to the abundance of fish in that area, especially herring and white perch, which are key food sources for our Nantucket Osprey during nesting season.

Researchers are also paying close attention to the platforms that are not currently being used. If possible, adding sticks to create a “starter” nest might help encourage Ospreys to adopt those locations. Male Ospreys are very focused on finding or creating the perfect nest, and if they see a platform that already looks well-built, they are much more likely to move in and complete it. It is a simple action that could make a

big difference in future nesting success.

At the end of this season, Buck plans to put together an annual report that will be available to everyone. It will include a summary of the data collected, observations from the field, and insights gained. She is excited to share the full picture of what has been such a successful start to the Nantucket Osprey Watch.

Anyone can get involved even this far into the season. Participants do not have to commit to monitoring a specific nest all season, though that is helpful if you have the time to dedicate. Every single report adds to our understanding of the Osprey population on-island. All the forms and information are available at llnf.org/nantucket-osprey-watch. As Buck said, “We are always excited to welcome new participants, no matter your level of experience. I believe there are more nests out there that haven’t been discovered yet and more help is welcome!

“This has been a great season so far, and I have to thank all the volunteers who have helped me along the way. Without their help, we would not have such detailed records or be able to find so many nests. This season has already far surpassed my expectations, and I truly cannot thank them enough,” Libby Buck says of the volunteer observers who have flocked to her project.

Time to Catch a Striper

from page 5

the tournament was that only migratory striped bass would have the sea lice present on them, thus signifying that they were not holdover fish that are sometimes caught in our local ponds.

The inaugural Spring Sea Run opener had about 30 fishers hitting the beach. Nick Gault got things started by catching the first striper on April 25. The buzz among the fishing community was significant. This first tournament was a smashing success.

So who won, you ask? Well, ultimately, it was the Nantucket community. Again, from the Sea Run website: “The inaugural season of the Spring Sea Run Opener found great success in raising money for charity with the generosity of our local sponsors and devoted volunteers. At the conclusion of the tournament Michael O'Neil was selected as the event winner and chose Boston MedFlight as the winning not-for-profit-organization. Boston MedFlight received $1,250, which was accumulated through registration fees, merchandise sales, and donations. This funding was enough to fuel their helicopter and purchase a pilot's flight suit. It was truly a memorable inaugural season, and it gives us great hope for growth in the season to come!”

The winner was selected? Yes, as in Mike’s name was pulled out of a hat. This tournament doesn’t take itself too seriously, folks. Every angler who submits a fish is awarded a point. Catch a keeper-sized fish and you earn a second point. Every fisher who earns points is awarded an entry into the overall drawing. The angler whose name is selected has the honor of choosing the local charitable organization to receive the tournament proceeds. I would estimate that this humble tournament has awarded more than $35,000 to date to a wide variety of worthy charities. Last year, the group sent $3,000 to PASCON and the Marla Ceely Lamb fund, an organization that helps to cover the cost of travel for Nantucket residents traveling for cancer treatment. Amazing!

Make no mistake – this tournament is still competitive! A three-person team event was added several years ago, and that really heated things up. My team, the Irredeemable Irrelevants, has lived up to our name for six consecutive years. Womp, womp, womp…. The 2024 team champions were The Dream Team, made up of Tammy King, Cody Peterson, and James Hatton – yikes, what a lineup!

Rafael told me that the big push this year is to get more junior fishers on the board. “Juniors don’t have to sign up, just submit a fish – we’re going to extend the tournament deadline to get ten juniors submitting fish!” The junior award is named after the late Dan Kelliher, a Nantucket elementary school teacher who taught so many of us the basics of surf casting. Mr. Kelliher was the best, and I love that he is remembered in this fashion. Junior fishers (under age 18) don’t have to sign up in advance. Just get a picture of your striper on a fish measuring tape and submit it!

So how long does this tournament run? Until the first bluefish is caught, of course. An awards ceremony is held in the parking lot of one of the local beaches. It’s one of my favorite Nantucket events. The camaraderie is amazing, as is the good natured ribbing among contestants. “Put that crew in a room to talk politics, and they’d be at each other’s throats. Put them all in a room and talk about fishing, and it works.” Rafael is right on the money with that assessment.

It took a long time this year, but our first striper was finally caught on May 15, much later than usual. The first keeper-sized fish was caught three days later by Greg Chotkowski. The green flag has dropped, folks. Get out of your caves and onto the beaches! And please take a kid fishing – you’ll change their lives. Thank you Rafael, Lonell, and Star Rivard for this great event!

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
