NHA Community Day

This Wednesday, August 6, from 9 am to 12 noon, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is hosting a special Summer of Seams Community Day at Children's Beach, when all ages can participate in a tradition of community connection that is part of the tapestry of life on Nantucket.

The fun includes hands-on crafts, activities, and demonstrations that tie into and add an interactive aspect to the NHA’s main 2025 exhibit “Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket.” And at this event, the public can get a first look at the Community Quilt project that was part of the exhibit. At 11 am, a community fashion show will be held on the Children’s Beach bandstand.

This community gathering is the second time that the NHA has offered a free and family-friendly interpretation of its major exhibit. This year, the Community Day is designed to create a bridge between Nantucket's rich textile heritage and contemporary community engagement.

“Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket” presents a fascinating journey through our island’s history and culture, showcasing more than 150 objects garments and textiles that span centuries of Nantucket life. The variety of garments reveals details about how islanders lived, worked, and celebrated across different social classes and time periods, including items from practical work clothing worn by whalers and their families to elaborate formal wear that reflected the island’s prosperity during the height of the whaling era. The collection includes pieces that demonstrate the global connections fostered by Nantucket's maritime trade, with fabrics and styles that arrived from distant ports, as well as locally-made items that reflect the island's unique cultural identity.

Through careful conservation and thoughtful display, these textile treasures illuminate stories of craftsmanship, fashion, economics, and social change that might otherwise remain hidden behind the seams of history. The exhibition continues through November 2 in the Nantucket Whaling Museum.

Rain date for the NHA’s Summer of Seams Community Day at Children’s Beach is Thursday, August 7.

A New Chapter in the Island Theatre Scene

Early this spring, a board member from the Nantucket Performing Arts Center (NPAC) approached director Mark Shanahan during intermission of Theatre People, or The Angel Next Door in the Westport Country Playhouse, and the conversations and collaborations that followed brought this theater production to our island in record time. “He came to me and said ‘I think this would be great on Nantucket,’” Shanahan recalls. What typically takes a year to plan became a summer reality, part of an new chapter in Nantucket’s theater scene.

For the Nantucket production, Shanahan brought his original design team but recast entirely with seasoned professionals. “The cast are all Broadway veterans and tv and film regulars...you’ll probably recognize some,” he said. “It’s always a pleasure to re-explore a play... this time I have a different cast, so I’ve made some changes. It’s great to see how different actors react to a play”

“What still surprises me is how often the most powerful moments in a production come from something completely unplanned. You try to prepare as best you can before you start, but then in rehearsal, someone tries something new, or a mistake turns into something brilliant. And suddenly, there’s the unexpected laugh you didn’t know would be there, or that moment that makes the audience hold its breath. If you stay open to those discoveries, they often become the heart of the show — the moments audiences remember long after they leave the theatre. We’ve found a lot of heart in Theatre People. A lot of laughter- and a lot of sweet, tender moments, too.”

Casting this play by Paul Slade Smith correctly, Shanahan commented was key: “The first thing is get a fantastic cast that love what they do and can land every joke without overplaying it. They must play it as it matters to them. This play has to keep moving quickly and not let the audience get ahead of it. The entrances and exits must happen lightning-fast. Timing is everything in landing the comedy and letting the audience enjoy it.”

The production is on the NPAC stage August 1-14. “Theatre People, or The Angel

A Perfect Escape from Reality

After “musical theater,” the second most beautiful words in the English language are “90 minutes, no intermission.” Thanks to the third production in the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s current season, Buyer & Cellar offers audiences a perfect escape from reality. Think of it like this: “memorabilia, light the corners of my mind.”

If you marvel at one-person shows as I do, you are in for a theatrical treat: Robbie Simpson’s tour-de-force about a singular woman working through lots of stuff underneath her barn. Set in the windowless basement of a certain diva’s domicile, Buyer & Cellar evokes the 7-1/2 floor in “Being John Malkovich” because both are portals into the psyches of famous actors.

Some background...the singular woman in question is none other than Barbra Streisand. Inspired by her 2010 coffee table book “My Passion for Design,” playwright Jonathan Tolis honed his comedic chops after reading a particular passage in Streisand’s first book. While the tome tackles taste writ large, the chapter about a re-created shopping mall in her basement grabbed his attention.

Buyer & Cellar takes place in Malibu. Sam Transleau’s scenic design and Katy Feldhahn’s set dressing capture the subterranean set well, clearing space for viewers to use their imagination while Simpson engages multiple characters in conversation. Likewise, Stephen Petrilli’s lighting prowess subtly shifts time here, sequencing the plot by propelling things forward. In other words, TWN’s passion for design and visual style adds to the play’s light and breezy vibe.

From the start, Simpson takes center-stage as struggling actor Alex More, issuing several disclaimers about what audiences are about to see. For example, Alex disclaims any connection between Tolis’s play and journalism. “The premise is preposterous,” he says. “This is a work of fiction,” he reminds us. And he will not impersonate Streisand as much as he will inhabit her, homing in on her obsessive compulsive tendencies with awe and bemusement.

Of course, Streisand’s legendary perfectionism is no doubt a key ingredient to her success. But Alex has just been let go from the Happiest Place on Earth after an angry outburst involving a churro while he was the Mayor of Toontown. When one door closes, another one opens.

Telling this exact story to his boyfriend Barry, Alex embodies several other characters, including Vincent from HR at Disneyland and Barbra’s assistant Sharon. The former helps him land a new gig, while the latter acts as gruff gatekeeper to the greatest star, helping Alex navigate his new position. But what exactly does this odd job entail?

Of his new assignment, Alex knows “it’s near the ocean with rich people.” But when he learns he’ll be working on site in Streisand’s basement, Alex also isn’t sure what to expect.

He dutifully admires Streisand’s doll collection, antique furniture, costumes, and candy shop. Still he is supposed to curate her prized possessions, despite The Lady Herself having done so already. Hired perhaps more for his availability to indulge her passion projects, Alex mostly imagines meeting Barbra, though he is constantly thwarted by Sharon instead.

Then it happens; Streisand appears. She saunters down the cellar staircase and makes her entrance exactly the way you’d picture it: perfect hair, perfect nails, dolled up in a Donna Karan number designed by her fashionable friend.

Oozing insane aloofness, but also warmth and humor, Streisand eyes one of her own dolls—then asks Alex how much it is. Thus begins an absurd yet touching sequence where the two earnestly connect in this reality-based imaginary world.

As they haggle, I couldn’t help but think of the final scene in “Citizen Kane,” when Charles Foster Kane famously utters his last word and we realize what “Rosebud” symbolizes. From Xanadu to Malibu, a priceless cinematic thread connects the two.

After Alex and Barbra’s initial meeting, the two reconvene to discuss the sale of her antique doll. Again, Streisand already owns it and it is truly not for sale. But their banter belies something of far greater value: human connection. This is the stuff of healthy relationships over frozen coffee yogurt with sprinkles.

I always love conversational theater and film, where the main event is dialogue. Watching one man play himself, his boyfriend, a friend in HR, an assistant to a celebrity star, the Queen of the Divas, and her husband James Brolin, this is a feel-good theatrical feat refreshed for the moment.

As it turns out, Barbra Streisand is now 83 years old. Living history, she

It’s Hammer Time

Great white sharks get all the publicity. Especially this summer with the 50th Anniversary of Jaws, great whites are having a moment. But there are other sharks in the sea, and we’re starting to see more of them than ever. One group in particular—hammerhead sharks—are becoming more of a regular summer visitor than an anomaly.

Back in the summer of 2022, hammerhead sharks were seen several times in the shores of Nantucket causing multiple beach closures. Recently, on July 13, half a dozen hammerhead sharks were seen in waters just off of Cuttyhunk. Last week, hammerheads were seen south of Nantucket and off of Falmouth. In fact, in the past several years, hammerheads have been seen coming closer into shore throughout southern New England. One was even seen off the coast of Maine in waters once considered to be inhospitable to these more tropical species.

The increase in local sightings has coincided with increases in water temperatures. And it’s not just hammerheads that are being seen: blacktip sharks, bull sharks, and spinner sharks are also expanding their ranges as the southern waters become less hospitable.

Hammerhead sharks, of which there are many species, are more typically found in warmer, tropical-like waters. With the gulf stream extending further north, hammerheads are being seen with increased frequency along our coast where, previously, it would have been too cold. Unlike great white sharks, hammerheads and other warm water species like bull and tiger sharks cannot regulate their body temperatures by generating heat. Cold water shuts them down. The warmer water is extending their range.

Water temperatures in the Gulf of Maine, including the water around Nantucket, are warming at a faster rate than any other body of water in the Atlantic.

For Nantucket, the Gulf Stream typically brings warmer waters to our southern shoreline. As the waters further south become too warm, the prey species move northwards and so do the predators. With food and favorable conditions, the hammerhead sharks and others may become a more frequent sight. This is potentially the beginning of a range shift for these species.

The hammerhead we are typically seeing is the smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena). Sporting a wide and smooth cephalophoil or “hammerhead” this seasonal migrant is the second largest of the hammerheads, growing up to 12 feet in length. Preferring shallow waters less than 65 ft., smooth hammerheads live close to shore over continental shelves and inshore waters such as bays and estuaries. Smooth hammerheads are also the most tolerant of temperate waters. They are more likely to be seen sometime from July through September. Nantucket waters have always been at about the northern limit for their range. However, with warming waters, we’re seeing more and more hammerheads come into our shallows to feed.

Of course, it’s not just the water temperatures. As a top predator, sharks, including the hammerheads, follow the food. For smooth hammerheads, that means squid, smaller sharks, and bony fish. As the prey move, so do the sharks. For hammerheads in particular, they follow the fish close to shore and force them into the shallows. That’s how we can get those great images of hammerheads from drone footage or spotter planes: shallow clear water and the distinctive silhouette of the hammerhead shark.

Despite the increase is sightings, smooth hammerheads are not aggressive sharks. There is little danger to people from these relatively docile sharks. We should treat them more with respect than fear. Smooth hammerheads are a protected species. In the US, smooth hammerhead sharks are grouped with large coastal species, a group that biologists consider being most vulnerable to overfishing. The species is caught in gillnets, longlines, and as bycatch in driftnet fisheries. Due to their high fin ray count, they and other hammerheads are among the most desired species in the Asian shark fin market. The ICUN currently lists them as “Vulnerable.”

One purported reason for the recent increase in shark sightings is that there are more sharks due to conservation efforts. Many scientists believe there are

Celebrating 235 Years of Saving Lives

Egan Maritime Institute invites the public to join in commemorating the 235th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 4 to 5 pm at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.

This free, family-friendly event honors the proud history and ongoing service of the U.S. Coast Guard. All are welcome, with special recognition given to active-duty and retired Coast Guard members and their families.

August 4 marks the official birthday of the United States Coast Guard, established in 1790 when Alexander Hamilton founded the Revenue Cutter Service. Originally tasked with enforcing tariffs and preventing smuggling, the service evolved over time and merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to form the modern Coast Guard.

Nantucket is home to U.S. Coast Guard Station Brant Point, whose crew plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of islanders and mariners throughout the year. From conducting search and rescue operations to maintaining navigational aids and responding to offshore emergencies.

The Egan Maritime Institute and Coast Guard Station Brant Point share a longstanding relationship; a partnership grounded in mutual respect and a shared commitment to maritime heritage and safety. Through collaborative programs, educational outreach, and community engagement, Egan proudly supports the service members who protect Nantucket’s shores.

In addition, Nantucket is fortunate to have many U.S. Coast Guard veterans from Station Brant Point living in our year-round community. These veterans are an essential part of the island’s fabric, and we are honored to recognize their service during this celebration.

All are invited to enjoy complimentary museum admission, light refreshments, and a community gathering in tribute to the Coast Guard’s 235 years of service. To learn more about this event and others, visit eganmaritime.org.

Thanking Those Who Help along the Way

Teachers are a special breed. They are vital to our society and far too often underappreciated (and underpaid). As in so many things in my life, I remember those who treated me well...and those who didn’t. In fairness, I also remember the ones that I didn’t appreciate enough at the time. I truly regret the times that I acted poorly for those who simply wanted to make me a better person. My two daughters have both grown up to become teachers and I couldn’t be any prouder. It is a noble profession.

One of my favorite teachers of all time was Mr. Dan Kelliher, teacher of science classes for the students of Academy Hill School fourth and fifth graders in the early 1970s and then a middle school teacher in the 80s and 90s. Mr. Kelliher seemed impossibly tall to our class full of ten and eleven year olds. He had installed a couple of window mounted bird feeders in the back of our third floor classroom and taught us to recognize the variety of birds that stopped by for a meal. Mr. Kelliher’s greatest passion, however, was taking interested students out onto the green surfaced playground to teach us how to cast a surf rod.

Dan brought out a surf rod of about eight feet in length, equipped with a green-and-white Penn 704 spinning reel. The reel was spooled with 20 lb. test monofilament line. A tennis ball with an eye hook screwed into it served as our lure. Mr. Kelliher gave us the confidence and know-how we needed to get after the bluefish and bass. He taught us to put three fingers under the bottom of the reel, leaving the thumb and forefinger free. Pick up the line with your index finger, reach up with your left hand and flip the shiny chrome bail over, bring the rod back behind you (“Always look back before you cast so you don’t hook someone!”) and then step as you snap the rod forward, releasing the line from your finger as you do. Try as I might, I could never quite reach the fence at the far end

Reviving a Beloved Island Landmark

Along the Washington Street side of the building at 16 Main (the current location of the island’s Ralph Lauren store) is one of downtown Nantucket’s most popular spots to be photographed: the Compass Rose Mural.

Many visitors stop to read the various locations and remark on their distances from Nantucket. They wonder how the cities and islands were chosen for the mural. And a few astute observers smile when they find the misspelling.

The compass rose has appeared on nautical charts and maps since the 1300s. The term "rose" comes from the figure's compass points resembling the petals of the flower. Originally, it was used to indicate the directions of the winds (then known as a “wind rose”). It evolved to show cardinal directions: the main compass points of north, south, east, and west. Beyond its practical applications, the compass rose has taken on symbolic meanings in various cultures. It represents guidance, exploration, and the spirit of adventure. It’s often used decoratively in art, jewelry, apparel, and tattoos.

Nantucket’s Compass Rose was designed by photographer and entrepreneur H. Marshall Gardiner, who, in the 1930s, commissioned Walter Ayers (which explains the intentional misspelling) to paint the mural on the side of his gift shop named Gardiner’s Corner.

H. Marshall Gardiner arrived on Nantucket in 1910. He is widely known for his depictions of our community, the island’s natural beauty, and life on Nantucket and for his use of the gelatin dry plate method of photography, quite modern for his time. His hand-colored postcards and photographs are widely collected: one of his most recognized image is of the Rainbow Fleet rounding Brant Point. Gardiner first opened his photography and gift business on Federal Street and later moved it to 16 Main Street.

He designed the mural in 1936, based on the compass rose used by mariners

A New Chapter in Island Theatre

Next Door seems tailor-made for Nantucket audiences...it’s perfect for a Nantucket summer night,” Shanahan commented, “an old-fashioned comedy with a quick pace: sweet and genteel and smart and witty and very funny. It’s about eccentrically funny Broadway types at a seaside hotel.” The play’s setting and themes resonate deeply with the island experience. “Audiences on-island can relate to a weekend of romance and misunderstandings,” Shanahan added. “The set is elegant—they’ll want to move in and live there, and the costumes are great! In many ways, it feels more Nantucket than anything.”

The intimate setting of NPAC’s stage enhances the production’s appeal. Shanahan explained: “the intimacy of the Nantucket Performing Arts Center theater is great — it always has been — when we have actors of this caliber, and they are right there with you, and they are having this much fun... it feels like you're sitting right there in the room with them.”

Actor, director, and playwright Mark Shanahan is not new to Nantucket or to Nantucket theater. “I’ve been coming here since I was two. Our family has a home here, and I feel lucky to be here,” he explained. “My involvement in island theater goes back decades to my work in college with the Actor’s Theatre when it was at the Methodist Church and the Gordon Folger Hotel...In recent years, I worked at the White Heron Theatre, directing Private Lives, Hound of the Baskervilles, Dial M for Murder, The 39 Steps, See Monsters of the Deep, which I also directed for the NHA at the Whaling Museum last year.”

Shanahan has appeared on and off Broadway and has worked at many regional stages across the country and abroad. During the pandemic, he adapted and directed stories from Blue Baillett's book Nantucket Ghosts, 44 True Accounts for a fabulous series called White Heron Radio Theatre’s Ghost Light Series.

Plays he has written include A Sherlock Carol, a New York Times Critic’s Pick that was performed off-Broadway and in London and beyond. And his adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, written in conjunction with the Christie estate, has been produced across the US and overseas.

NPAC acquired the theater property at 5 North Water Street in April of 2025 with the goal of transforming it into a year-round performing arts campus. According to

A New Chapter in Island Theatre

summer resident Chris Bierly, “We look forward to developing the Nantucket Performing Arts Center as a home for Nantucket’s rich arts scene...We aspire to be a great partner to island arts and cultural organizations, to develop and stage high quality theatrical productions, and to be a hub of creativity and connection for generations to come.”

In this, its inaugural season, NPAC and ACK Theatre Company, its resident theatre company, has presented What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck, A Night for Swifties, and the Stand Up & Learn Kid’s Comedy Showcase. Theatre People, or The Angel Next Door opens this week, and on August 19, Seth Meyers will grace the NPAC stage for a night of stand-up.

As a member of NPAC's artistic advisory committee, Shanahan sees the August production he is directing as part of a larger vision: “I’m so pleased it happened... that it will still be a theater,” he said.

“Some of us [on the advisory committee] have deep ties to the theater, and we have careers in the theater. We are all very close, and we are all very excited to continue to plant the seeds to make NPAC grow,” Shanahan explains. “I'm already excited to think about what plays I can bring here.”

Shanahan also highlighted the island's flourishing and cooperative arts scene. “I want people to recognize that the arts are flourishing here on-island. There are so many great arts organizations: Theatre Workshop, The Dreamland... and there's the Book Festival, the Film Festival, the Comedy Festival... arts and creativity thrive here! It’s our hope that NPAC and ACK Theatre Company will be a part of it.”

In turbulent times, Shanahan sees theater’s role as essential. “Theatre People offers something fundamental: a reminder of why we gather in theaters, why we tell stories, and why we need the promise that things will get better...When the world is so crazy and so troubling: this is what we really need right now...to sit in an audience and laugh together and enjoy an evening. The cast talks about how a good play can really move people, and why we need happy endings... [happy endings are] a promise that things will get better.”

Mark Shanahan hopes for his audiences are straightforward: “I want them to laugh. I want them to have a great time. They’re in good hands with good actors...and laughter is such good medicine.”

Indeed, Simpson’s Streisand is the whole reason to see Buyer & Cellar. I also firmly believe she would find his portrayal respectfully spot-on. Who knows?

After so many years of “Coffee Talk” skits on SNL, she finally showed up to surprise Mike Myers, Madonna, and Roseanne Barr when they were spoofing her cult fandom. Maybe she’ll swoop in to Nantucket just to see Simpson’s fabulous performance, too. If you’ve seen her in “Carpool Karaoke” with James Corden, could happen.

Sarah Wright embraces theater for its live performance art, storytelling, & shared experience.

more sharks around Nantucket in the last 5 years partly because the populations are recovering after an 80% decimation from being overfished in decades past.

While shark populations are still considered critical globally, marine biologists are beginning to see the effects of effective fisheries management, which is then leading to population increases across a number of species that provide food for sharks.

John Chisholm, adjunct scientist at the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabat Center for Ocean Life, is interested to hear about shark sightings. He has studied sharks for more than 40 years and is using community science to keep track of shark sightings. Hammerheads and others are the subject of research projects with some efforts to tag individuals. But community science uses the “on the water” community to collect the data. By collecting sighting info from those already on the water, recreational, commercial, and charter boats, researchers are gaining insight into potential range expansion of many species.

To submit sightings to John Chisholm, you can tag him on Instagram @ma_sharks or send an email to masssharks@gmail.com.

Dan also taught us a couple of fishing knots that I still use all the time. We learned both the Palomer knot and the improved clinch knot (seven times around!). Mr. Kelliher was a significant part of our lives during those formative years.

I wondered if anyone else recalled the fishing lessons at Academy Hill? The obvious way to get the answer was to put it out on Facebook, so I did. My post said, “All right, Nantucket peeps - who remembers being taught how to cast by Dan Kelliher when we were attending Academy Hill School? Please let me know what your memories of that are!”

The results were absolute gold!

From Jay Starr, owner/captain of Starrfish Charters: “Absolutely! Fifth grade, Academy Hill. Remember his saltwater fish tank in the classroom?”

From Andy Lowell: “The Palomar knot - he taught us how to tie our fishing line to the leader. He put up the homemade weather station in front of the school. We checked the rain gauge, temperature, and humidity, among other weather related data. He gave us a drop of mercury in a jar to shake and watch it cling back together. We got to take it home. He kept students engaged and interested. No one ever got out of line in his class, he had a commanding presence. He also smoked a lot of cigarettes.”

From John Correia: “I remember Jim Haley caught a bass on one of those trips. He would be a good one to get the story from.”

From Jim Haley: “Yes, like anyone who was taught to cast by Dan, we started out casting in the playground of Academy Hill School with a tennis ball attached to the leader. Once we were good enough he would take us in small groups to Brant Point by the lighthouse to try the real thing. Sure enough on my trip I caught a small striper! I realized it was a small one as I got older and got the bigger ones but at the time I thought it was pretty huge! Man, I still remember that awesome feeling. First striper I ever caught!”

This, from Chris Roberts, was one of my favorites: “He also had rods to lend.

I caught a good sized striper at Brant Point on it. Had to bring it home on my Sting Ray bicycle!”

I reached out to Kathleen Potter Kelliher, Dan’s wife of 36 years. Kathleen told me, “Dan was in the U.S. Army, stationed in Chattanooga, TN. The folks

in the town where he was living weren’t too hospitable to the Army guys, so when Dan moved to Nantucket, he always made it a priority to make the Coasties (U.S. Coast Guard service members) feel at home. He was made an honorary Coastie by Admiral Linnon!” She told me that Dan came to Nantucket on a work study program through the UMass School of Agriculture. Dan took a job working at the (then) Nantucket Boys Club. He enjoyed it so much that he went to Bridgewater State University to obtain his teaching degree. “Dan taught here for 28 years. He still loved the farm work, so he spent his summers mowing large meadows and fields on an old Farm All tractor. He did the roads for the town, too.”

Dr. Matt Roberts and his friend, David Buckley, appreciated the teaching of Dan Kelliher so much that they co-sponsor the Dan Kelliher Award, presented to the winning junior fisher every year in the Spring Sea Run Opener tournament. Dr. Matt told me this: “We loved Spider Dan! When we met him in 6th Grade we knew he was the real deal! The sea stories, the fish he had caught, the fish he had lost, and the D1 basketball stories from UMass just blew us all away. He had that old school balance of wisdom, reality and the ability not to take crap from the students or administration.

He was running the safe boating program in the middle school and after a week with him in science class that’s all we wanted for enrichment class. He took us on field trips with the Coast Guard to drop continued on page 23

buoys in the tender, and he handed me my first state of Mass. license when I passed the safe boating test. I believe that he was the big push at the Angler’s Club with all the kids divisions for the tournaments through the 80s and 90s. Whenever we were at Great Point as kids, I felt like he was ever-present with a fishing rod in his hand. He had the experience and reached a point where all he wanted to do was teach and pass on his love, his passion for the chase and the hookup!”

From David Buckley: “One of my favorite stories was him bringing us down to the creeks after school and having us drag a net to catch fish to stock the fish tanks. Do you remember the final test he gave us? He told us beforehand how Ted Williams hit a home run in his final at-bat at Fenway and how Ted wanted to go out on top. Everyone crushed that test!”

Dan passed away in January of 2022. I was glad to have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Kelliher while I was visiting at Our Island Home several years ago. I’m grateful to have had that opportunity to tell him that he was always one of my favorite teachers and to thank him again for teaching me to cast. I honor him every time I instruct a fishing client on the fine art of surf casting. Thank you, Spider Dan!

One of my friends who jumped into the chat about Dan Kelliher was Howie Crocker, a Nantucket High School classmate of mine who I haven’t seen in far too long. Howie’s mother, Carol Crocker, was a teacher in our school system as well. Mrs. Crocker remains one of the most beautiful people that I was ever blessed to come into contact with. No, Mrs. Crocker never taught me anything about fishing. But she taught me a lot about life. About right and wrong. And about kindness. Mrs. Crocker always pointed us in the right direction, like the best teachers do. So thank you, Carol Crocker, for all you did for me and so many others. And thank you, Dan Kelliher, for getting so many of us out there on the beaches!

Don’t ever hesitate to thank those who have helped you along the way. And be on the lookout for opportunities to teach our youngsters to be better in whatever way you can. Dan Kelliher and Carol Crocker sure did. And we’re all better for it.

Steve “Tuna” Tornovish is a Nantucket native who has spent his life fishing from the beaches of his beloved island. He loves to introduce clients to the joy of fishing with his Nantucket Island Fishing Adventures: stevetuna.com

and navigators, and he included on it destinations of personal significance, such as Mackinac Island, Bermuda, and Daytona Beach. According to some reports, other locations on the mural were inspired by chats Gardiner had with George Grant about his voyages in the Pacific. Grant’s mother, Nancy, was among the few Nantucket women who accompanied their husbands on whaling trips, and George was born in a port in the Pacific. He worked on Nantucket whaleships from a young age, and when he returned to our island, George Grant went on to become one of the first curators at the Nantucket Whaling Museum.

The compass rose portion of the mural originally, and now again, commemmorates Gardiner’s shop. From the late 1960s through 2003—the years that Nantucket Looms occupied 16 Main Street—a wooden compass rose sign commemorating the Looms was placed in the center, over Gardiner’s Corner. That sign still hangs in the current location of The Looms, at 51 Main Street.

In the fall of 2006, Ralph Lauren (the shop currently at 16 Main Street) partnered with the Nantucket Historical Association to restore the mural. And this July, Nantucket’s Compass Rose mural received a much-needed touch-up by Painting Conservator Cindy Schwarz: perfect timing for summer photos.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
