Uniting Community with New Exhibit & Project

On May 23, the Nantucket Historical Association launches its 2025 main exhibition, Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket, in the Nantucket Whaling Museum. Showcasing over 150 remarkable pieces from the NHA’s costume and textile collections, this exhibit brings to life the craft, culture, and identity woven into Nantucket’s history, telling stories across centuries.

“So many aspects of island history can be explored through textiles and clothing,” said Michael Harrison, NHA Chief Curator and Obed Macy Research Chair. “The NHA is excited to present visitors with a rare look at some of the most intriguing objects in our collection—the clothing and textiles that people created and used on Nantucket in the past.”

On view through November 2, Behind the Seams features clothing, accessories, household textiles, and tools for sewing and textile production from the NHA’s 2,000-piece costume and textile collections. Rarely seen objects, assembled from more than two centuries of clothing and textiles on Nantucket, will illustrate the skill and artistry of island makers and stories of life on our island.

Exhibition themes will explore textile production and trade—from raw materials to finished garments—as well as the relationships, communities, identities, and values revealed by textile objects created and used by Nantucketers. Clothing brands that reflect the summer resort and products from the island’s robust craft revival movement extend the themes of making and meaning into the twentieth century. The exhibition highlights the persistence of sustainable practices, demonstrating how islanders have cared for and valued clothing and textiles. Together, the themes of making, meaning, and sustainability will reflect Nantucket’s history as a seaport, its shift from a whaling economy to a summer resort, and the legacy of the island’s talented textile practitioners.

Behind the Seams is the first major exhibition of objects from the NHA’s cos-

Between Blossom and Stone

Beneath the boughs where lilacs lean,

The garden wakes in gold and green.

Soft tendrils twist, the light’s embrace, A dance of life in time and space.

The table’s set with fruits and wine, A feast where smiles spread like vine.

Sweet berries burst, the glasses gleam, An ephemeral joy, a summer dream.

Yet into the wood, where shadows stay, A lone oak bows, the branches sway.

The earth holds names in the hardened clay,

A hush of love that will not fray.

Lupin laughs where poppies sleep, Their roots run silent, dark and deep.

But petals, bright, like torches burn, A blossom for those who won’t return.

So here we stand, between the two,

Where roses rise and echoes strew.

To taste, to toast, to touch the past,

To plant a love that still holds fast.

For gardens grow in grief and glee,

A braid of loss and revelry.

Between the blossom and the stone, We find the space to call our own.

As the long, sun-drenched days of late spring stretch across Nantucket, the island hums with the energy of change. The wind, softer now, carries the scent of salt and lilac, the ocean glints under a sapphire sky, and the islanders and visitors alike turn their attention to two distinct yet intertwined celebrations: the indulgence of the Nantucket Wine & Food Festival and the solemn reflection of Memorial Day. These twin pillars of the season, one brimming with the joy of taste and tradition, the other steeped in the quiet reverence of remembrance, ask us to embrace life’s beautiful contradictions. How do we balance celebration with honoring the past? Perhaps, as with all things on this storied island, the answer lies in the land itself. Our gardens, whether brimming with heirloom vegetables or wild with native blooms, are a reflection of this delicate dance, offering us both sustenance and symbolism, abundance and solace.

Spring’s grand finale is here, and in the kitchen garden the season’s generosity is on full display. This is a time of reward, when the tender work of early spring planting unfurls into vibrant greens, crisp radishes, and fragrant herbs. The first strawberries, blushing and sweet, hint at the decadence of continued on page 16

Stocking and then Stalking Trout

My wife and I were able to sneak away for a short trip to Florida last week and boy oh boy did we need it! Life can be a lot at times, and a vacation, even a short vacation, is really important to allow you to reset and get prepared for the next chapter. Yet even as we were lounging in the Sunshine State, I felt a lingering feeling that I was missing something important back on Nantucket. A quick perusal through Instagram and Facebook revealed that my premonition was correct. There was some big stuff going on in the world of Nantucket fishing and yes, indeed, I was missing out.

FOMO – the fear of missing out. It’s actually a diagnosed psychological disorder. Who knew? And man, did I ever have a bad case of it when I saw what was being posted. The Nantucket Anglers Club was hosting a Trout Fishing Derby at Maxcey’s Pond and Washing Pond, and I wasn’t there. So it turns out that my fears were completely rational. Hard to believe!

“Jeff (Allen) had invited us to Tammy King’s talk about saltwater fishing at the Anglers Club and my girls saw the flyer there. I took a picture of it. The original date had been rained out so they had rescheduled for May 4. And the girls had also heard about this at their Scout meetings. We had to go!” Julia Heise doesn’t have FOMO because she’s always on her game and, therefore, doesn’t miss out! Julia rounded up her daughters Abby (6-years-old) and Evelyn (8-yearsold) and her husband Jameson and headed to Maxcey’s Pond on that recent Sunday morning.

“We parked in the public lot and walked down to where everyone was. Matt Roberts was there, helping everyone. He got fishing rods for the kids. They had bait – nightcrawlers, meal worms, and live minnows. Matt showed us how to hook them.”

Ok, so there’s a lot to unpack here. First of all, where did the trout come from? The answer to that question led me to Joe Tormay (cover photo). Joe is an amaz-

Will Brood XIV Miss the Boat to Nantucket?

You may have been hearing some buzzzzz about cicadas in our regional news outlets lately. Throughout the state, people are preparing for an onslaught of insects. Why, when, and where?

Well, first the “what”: the emergence of Cicada Brood XIV begins this month and has got many people either bracing for a swarm or looking up cicada recipes. This is one of the few periodic cicada broods known from Massachusetts. But what does that mean for us here on Nantucket? And what even is a “brood” anyway?

Let’s start with cicadas in general. Cicadas are a group of insects related to leafhoppers, treehoppers, spittlebugs, and aphids. There are many different species (9 have been documented in Massachusetts). The most common in our area, the dog-day cicada, emerges every one or two years. But since their emergence isn’t synched with other cicadas, some will emerge every year. Other species are periodic with all individuals synched. All periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year are known collectively as a single “brood.” Scientists have identified each brood and designated it with a Roman numeral. They are well-tracked by scientists and cicada enthusiasts who keep watch. The University of Connecticut maintains a brood database for the northeast ( cicadas.uconn.edu/broods ). There is a wealth of historic and present-day information on cicadas in our region.

Each brood has its own unique range, population size, and emergence cycle. There are 15 different periodic broods in North America, two of which occur in New England. The hot topic around here is the emergence of brood XIV. This periodic brood has a 17-year cycle. So the upcoming emergence of brood XIV was last seen in 2008. As of this writing, they have already emerged in Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Brood XIV is also expected to emerge this spring in Georgia, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

tume and textile collection since completion in 2018 of a major inventory funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This cataloging and rehousing project ensured the long-term preservation of the NHA’s textile collection while increasing access and visibility for research and display. New insights revealed by the inventory are now being realized in Behind the Seams.

“The NHA’s textile collection is a significant one, critically important as a gateway for research into better understanding Nantucket’s history and changing culture. The multi-year effort to catalogue and better care for this collection has led to this point, and we are excited to share this work with our members and the public,” said Niles Parker, Gosnell Executive Director of the NHA.

The guest curator for the exhibition is Jennifer Nieling, an independent costume and textile specialist whose association with the NHA goes back to 2015, when she inventoried the menswear collection and mounted the first of many costumes for NHA exhibition projects. In 2017 and 2018, she led the IMLS-funded collection inventory. A graduate of Boston University and the Fashion & Textile Studies master’s program at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Nieling now specializes in costume mounting and display. She continues to pursue independent research and has published on the history of Nantucket Looms and weaver Andy Oates. On May 20, Nieling will be giving a free lecture entitled The Making and Meanings of the Behind the Seams Exhibition at 5:30 pm in the Nantucket Whaling Museum.

The NHA has organized a special Community Quilt project to correspond with Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket. This project invites Nantucket community members to contribute a panel to a conceptual quilt. A celebratory display of works of art will be revealed at the NHA’s Community Day, slated for Monday, August 4. Additional Community Quilt panel contributions and displays will continue into the fall at NHA programs and events and conclude with an exhibition celebration in October that will include an auction of the Community Quilt panels.

Contributors, including individuals, organizations, and businesses are invited to interpret what the Nantucket community means to them. All art mediums are welcome, from fabric to paint and more, with the NHA providing an 8”x8” wood diamond panel to each contributor for their artwork. To sign up and arrange to pickup a panel at Create, 8 Amelia Drive (who has generously donated materials), and to review rules and instructions, visit nha.org/community-quilt-project. Participants must be on-island to pick up and return their finished quilt panels before July 1, 2025.

In addition to community member contributions, the NHA will be hosting Community Quilt projects at many of their programs and events to provide community members with an opportunity to view panel-making in action.

“There is a long-standing history of community quilt-making that our exhibition touches on and that we have examples of in our collection, so we are excited to spearhead the creation of a piece of work that can be in this same spirit and showcase the story of the Nantucket community today,” said Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

Textiles have long been made by and for communities to express social connection and reflect local identity. From the mid-19th century “album quilts” or “friendship quilts” with their distinctive signatures to embroidered crazy quilts with whimsical designs, many quilts commemorate friendships and community gatherings and are themselves products of communal work. The NHA collection holds many examples of these meaningful pieces, some of which will be displayed in the exhibition Behind the Seams

Additional lectures, programs, and special events to support the exhibition will feature talks by scholars and artists; scheduled loom weaving demonstrations will be provided by local practitioners; and a range of family-friendly textile crafts will be offered in the children’s Discovery Center. Special community programs and events will be offered, including textile-focused Mindful Memories and NHA on the Road programs, as well as Decorative Arts workshops at the 1800 House. Visit NHA.org for upcoming details on these and other programs.

Stocking and then Stalking Trout

from page 5

ing guy who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. Joe and Nick Whitbeck were searching for striped bass off of Monomoy Island last October when they came upon a man in his 70s clinging to the hull of his capsized boat. The man had been there for about an hour. Joe reverted to his U.S. Coast Guard training and they were able to rescue the man. Yeah, that’s just Joe doing Joe stuff.

So Joe, how did the trout end up on Nantucket? “It was during COVID in 2020, in early spring before the stripers show up. I thought that it would be really fun to catch trout here. They’re such predatory feeders – it would be nice to have a little different fishery! I grew up in Connecticut, and the ponds were always stocked with trout in the spring. I was talking with my buddy Mike (Thureson, another Connecticut transplant) and we got to thinking that there’s got to be a way to stock trout on Nantucket. Massachusetts does trout stocking all around the state but not here.”

Joe did some research. He learned that a crazy situation exists here on Nantucket. While we are a part of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the ponds were not given to Massachusetts when the island left the purview of New York many moons ago. The good news is that freshwater fishing licenses are not required here. The bad news? Yeah, no fish stocking by the Mass. Fish and Game department. “Seeing all the trout stockings got me thinking, hey, why can’t WE stock it? The ponds belong to the Nantucket people, right?”

Joe discovered that the Nantucket Anglers Club had stocked trout into Maxcey’s Pond and Washing Pond in the early 2000s. Jimmy Ellis had been one of the main players in those earlier efforts. Joe picked Jimmy’s brain and learned a lot about what worked and what had not. “Trout need good deep and clean water that stays colder. Washing Pond and

Maxcey’s Pond worked. We raised donations from the public. Cam and Corey Gammill helped out a lot. We raised about $6,000 in no time. Jimmy also told us that rainbow and brown trout would do better than brook trout because they could stand a little warmer water temperatures.”

Joe was off and running. “I had to get in touch with the guy who issues the stocking permits for Mass. He was very helpful.” The Anglers Club crew had funding, they had the blessing of the regulating authorities and now they needed one final, critical element: Trout.

“This is our sixth year doing the stocking. We originally got trout from a guy who had a hatchery on the Cape, but a family of otters decimated his farm. He lost 5,000 trout in about two weeks! Now we work with Gilbert’s Trout Hatchery in Plymouth, MA. Great people. Arlene is the best!”

Joe shared pictures from the trout stocking events. Because the stocking truck couldn’t pull down to the island ponds, the Anglers Club members formed bucket brigades to dump approximately 800 rainbow and brown trout into the two ponds. Keith Mansfield has been involved with the stocking days, working with his son Owen, currently a Nantucket High School freshman. Keith told me, “It’s all about the kids. Joe has been such a big asset for them, and

Between Blossom and Stone

from

summer just ahead. Each morning, the garden greets the day with something new to offer, a steady rhythm of growth and giving.

Food, at its best, is an act of connection, a bridge between earth and table, past and present. In the kitchen garden, this connection comes alive. Asparagus spears, once mere whispers poking through the soil, now stand tall, ready for roasting, grilling, or shaving raw into a bright salad. Mint, wild with exuberance, begs to be muddled into cocktails, steeped in tea or leading the orchestra as the conductor of curry. The season’s first strawberries taste like a memory, a reminder of childhood summers, of fingers stained red from picking, of sugarsprinkled shortcakes eaten on a sun-warmed porch. They pair effortlessly with the festivities of the moment, starring in tarts, tossed into salads, or served simply in a flute of chilled rosé. Even in the midst of plenty, the wise gardener is always looking ahead. With summer’s heat on the horizon, now is the time to plant the crops that will carry us forward: tomatoes, their vines eager to climb; peppers, promising bursts of spice and sweetness; basil, the fragrant companion that turns any meal into a masterpiece. This is the rhythm of the garden and of life itself— harvesting the gifts of the present while tending to the future.

In a place like Nantucket, where history lingers in every salt-weathered shingle and cobblestone street, the past is never far from the present. Memorial Day invites us to honor those who came before, to reflect on the sacrifices made, the stories told and untold. Food, too, can be an act of remembrance. Heirloom vegetables, passed down through generations, hold the flavors of history. A wellloved family recipe, perhaps a humble clam chowder, rich with tradition, becomes more than just sustenance—it becomes a tribute. As we gather for Memorial Day meals, let us weave this reverence into our feasts. Let us toast not only to the season’s bounty but to the hands that have worked the soil before us, the lives that have shaped our present.

As May deepens into June, the garden transitions. Early bloomers bow out, their petals returning to the earth, making way for the next wave of color. This is the time for thoughtful tending, cutting back spent blooms, pulling weeds that threaten to overtake the wild natives, and preparing the soil for summer’s heat.

unfolds, one wilder, quieter, yet no less meaningful. The native garden, a tapestry of island flora, thrives in its own rhythm, unbothered by trends or the demands of harvest. This is a place of deep-rooted wisdom, a landscape that has witnessed centuries of shifting tides and changing hands. Blue flag iris unfurls its violet banners along pond edges, a regal presence in the landscape. Wild lupine, with its spires of lavender and blue, draws in pollinators, a symphony of buzzing gratitude. Baptisia, the humble yet hardy indigo plant, bursts into bloom, a reminder that beauty often thrives in resilience.

Memorial Day calls for quiet moments, for places of pause. The native garden offers these naturally: a shaded bench beneath an Eastern Redbud, a winding path lined with Carex and wild Geranium, a small patch of earth where a loved one’s favorite flower returns year after year. In these spaces, moments become memories and remembrance takes root. We gather not only in cemeteries and at monuments but in the landscapes that hold meaning, in the gardens where stories are sung by the birds and hummed by the bees. Life is, at its core, a balancing act, a dance between joy and grief, past and present, abundance and loss.

On Nantucket, where the ocean itself mirrors the constant ebb and flow of time, we are reminded that both celebration and reflection are essential. There is no contradiction in raising a glass of wine while holding space for remembrance. Just as the garden thrives on both sun and shade, we, too, are shaped by both the light and the losses in our lives. A garden party can coexist with a moment of silence. A feast can be infused with gratitude. This is the gift of the season, the ability to hold both joy and reverence in the same hands, to celebrate while honoring, to remember while living fully.

As we move through this late spring, let us gather with intention. Let us share meals that nourish not only our bodies but our souls. Let us cook with heirloom ingredients, drink wines that tell stories, and plant flowers that will bloom for those who come after us. Let us embrace this season in all its fullness, the flavors, the flowers, the laughter, the quiet.

The gardens of Nantucket, whether filled with tomatoes and basil or wild with native grasses, teach us how to navigate this delicate balance. They remind us to savor the fleeting, to honor the lasting, and to trust in the cycles that carry us forward. As the long days stretch toward summer, let us walk through our gardens with gratitude. Let us taste the sweetness of the season and remember those who made it possible. Let us celebrate, and let us honor.

Beyond the cultivated rows of the kitchen garden, another kind of beauty

Because, in the end, this is what it means to be truly alive.

they all love and respect him with all outdoor activities. Owen really looks up to him.”

All of these efforts led to this wonderful and relatively warm event held on Sunday, May 4. A lot of work still remained to be done. That’s where guys like Homer Ray IV, Keith Mansfield, Matt Roberts, and others stepped up. “We try to hold the trout tournament in April, but it’s always subject to weather. We really got it done this year—such a great turnout. Got to get the next generation out there!” Homer Ray was excited. He fishes with his two sons every chance that he gets. “We’ve been working with the Scouts as well. Most of the kids who showed up were Scouts. Each level of Scouts have a merit badge related to fishing. This event is just a great way to introduce kids to the sport.”

“We had a nice picnic after the fishing was done at 11:00. The best numbers in years! A great turnout. Close to 25 kids fishing. Only two trout were caught, both by a kid from an off-island scout troop. He got a nice 18-inch rainbow, almost two pounds! He got one

out of Washing Pond and one out of Maxcey’s. He’s a member of the Falmouth Scout Troop that was here for disc golf merit badge event. He was an avid fisherman, 12- or 13-years-old. He won a fishing rod! The second place winner received a tackle box loaded with gear, and the third place prize was a nice minnow trap and stuff. All in all, there were prizes for six kids who caught a fish. This is open for any kid on the island! Five different species of fish were caught.”

Yeah, I really missed out. Oh well, maybe next year! But the best news is that the boys and girls of Nantucket don’t have to miss out, thanks to great people like Joe, Homer, Matt, and Keith who generously give their time through great organizations like the scouting programs or the Nantucket Anglers Club.

To take some of the edge off of my FOMO, I ventured out to Maxcey’s Pond yesterday afternoon. I tossed a Red Devil spoon in the pouring rain and BOOM! Yes, folks, I reeled in a beautiful rainbow trout. And that’s how you cure FOMO!

Will Brood XIV Miss the Boat to Nantucket?

Historical dates for brood XIV in Massachusetts include appearances over the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s in Barnstable, Dennis, Falmouth, Bourne, Plymouth and a handful of other nearby towns. Brood XIV was recorded in 1624 by Massachusetts Governor Bradford. It may be the only one to occur in Massachusetts.

For Massachusetts, you can check out an iNaturalist Live Map for emergence sitings of Brood XIV. The reports right now are of the emerging nymphs. When the magic year arrives for these cicadas, the nymph digs to the surface, normally during the night, crawls up a tree trunk, and anchors itself with its claws. The skin of the back then splits, and the winged adult emerges and seeks its preferred habitat. While the adults only have a lifespan of three to four weeks above ground, when we notice them the most, the male cicadas make their presence known with buzzing sounds to attract mates. Females then lay eggs in trees, and by the end of the summer, the nymphs will hatch and burrow underground, feeding off roots until they emerge again in 2042.

How do they know when to come out of their burrows? Published literature suggests that periodical cicadas keep track of time by using an internal “counter” that keeps track of annual cycles. When their annual cycle is up, cicadas can gauge the temperature to figure out when to emerge from the soil.

According to cicadamania.com, the brood XIV cicadas emerge when the soil 8 inches beneath the ground surface reaches approximately 64°F. A warm rain will often trigger an emergence.

Unfortunately for us, Brood XIV never makes it out to Nantucket. They typically prefer mesic forested landscapes, of which we have little here. Even the Cape populations are unusual for their sandy soils.

On-island, we primarily have four species of cicadas; the Northern Dog-day Cicada (Neotibicen canicularis), the Swamp Cicada (Neotibicen tibicen), Common Lyric Cicada (Neotibicen lyricen ssp. Lyricen), and the Southern Dusky-winged Cicada (Neotibicen tibicen ssp. Australis). You can see examples of all of these on iNaturalist (www.inaturalist.org).

The most common, dog-days cicadas, got their name because of their loud calls late in the dog-days of summer. When you think of a hot, August day out in the moors of Nantucket, the calling cicadas are the soundtrack you’re hearing.

Scientists have found that their song varies in pitch and intensity based on temperature cues. Cicadas like heat and do their most spirited singing during the hotter hours of a summer day in a roughly 24-hour cycle. A cicada’s high-pitched song not only attracts females (and other males who join in the cacophony) but it also repels birds. In some cases the din is enough to throw off avian communication and disrupt their group hunting behavior.

For a species so influenced by temperature, climate change is likely having impacts, especially on cicada emergence patterns, potentially leading to earlier and more unpredictable emergences. Warmer winters and earlier springs could trigger cicadas to emerge before their usual time, or even shorten their typical emergence cycle.

So, should we be worried about these emerging cicadas? Friend or foe? I vote for friend. Cicadas do not kill trees and are around for such a short time that any damage they cause is short-lived. They don’t carry diseases and aren’t harmful to wildlife. In fact, their presence is a boon to anything that will eat them, including many bird species. There is even a predator known as the cicada killer. This big black and yellow parasitic wasp catches and paralyzes cicadas before dragging them down into an underground burrow where it will serve as food for the larva. The only real “harm” cicadas inflict is their sometimes-deafening sound. We hear it over the whole island in summer, but it doesn’t mean cicadas are everywhere. The males are rubbing their legs together calling for females who can be more than a mile away. Thus, the extremely loud sounds as the male cicada tries to let his presence be known.

I like thinking of these newly emerging cicadas like living time-capsules. If only we could interview one about what life was like in 2008. Would they be shocked about what things are like today? Well, they may be disappointed in habitat changes or reduced food availability. Too bad they don’t make it out to the islands where habitat is plentiful. Who knows, a few may make the ferry after all.

Swamp cicada by L. Buck

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
