Nestled in the heart of downtown Nantucket, the Nantucket Atheneum has been a beacon of learning, connection, and community spirit for nearly two centuries, providing access to knowledge in a close-knit island setting. Founded in 1834, our island’s public library has evolved into much more—it’s a vibrant hub that nurtures minds, supports well-being, and fosters a sense of belonging for residents and visitors.
“It’s a place where anyone can walk in and feel like they belong. nSure, we’ve got books—and lots of them—but we’re so much more than that,” explained the Atheneum team. “Some folks come in to read, study, and explore, others bring their kids for storytime or join a workshop...some just want a quiet spot to sit and think. It’s a safe space, a calm space. For a lot of people, it feels like a second home. We’re proud to be a part of people’s everyday lives on the island.”
Today, in addition to the expected content of a public library—books, magazines, newspapers, and internet access—the Nantucket Atheneum continues its tradition of serving our island’s growing diverse population with a range of programs tailored to all ages. “We really do try to have something for everyone.”
For young children, weekly storytimes, crafts, reading support, and music and dance activities lay the foundation for early learning. Teenagers can attend trivia nights, crafts, game nights, and even self-defense classes, encouraging social engagement and skill development. “It’s a great way for them to hang out, try something new, and feel like the library is a space that’s really theirs.”
Adults participate in book clubs, language classes, yoga, mindfulness sessions, author talks, lectures by thought leaders, and more, ensuring the library remains a vital resource for personal growth and lifelong learning.
The library’s commitment to inclusive programming is further evident in groups like the Women’s Support Group led by Lisa Lothian, LCSW, offering a safe space for

In 2017 a trio of dynamic women on Nantucket—Meryl Bralower, Melanie Sablehaus, and Jeanine Borthwick—spearheaded an effort with Nantucket Cottage Hospital to empower island women to take charge of their healthcare.
“Our goal is to empower women to make the right decisions...[we want them] to know what to ask for from doctors,” explained Bralower in a previous interview. “We want women to be their own advocates as well as advocates for their family members,” she added.
Nantucket Island’s only summer event dedicated exclusively to women’s health returns this month when Nantucket Cottage Hospital presents the 8th annual Women+Wellness event on Monday, July 21, from 5 to 7 pm. Admission tickets is free, reservations are required at the Women+Wellness link on NantucketHospital.org — at press time, seats at this event were still available but are expected to fill quickly.
This year’s Women+Wellness event features Dr. Shadi Kourosh, MD, MPH and Suzanne Davis, RD, LDN, CDCES.
Arianne Shadi Kourosh, MD MPH is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a founding director of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Dermatology Division of Community Health and is a board-certified dermatologist. Dr. Kourosh will share insights on the latest trends in skincare and how they contribute to health and longevity.
Suzanne Davis, RD, LDN, CDCES is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, and Clinical Nutrition Manager at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Suzanne manages clinical nutrition in both inpatient and outpatient settings and has worked with thousands of patients in her 27 years at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Davis will dive into the question - "Does being a women increase your risk of developing Pre-Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes?"
This education-focused program is designed to help women make the best decisions they can and to educate the community about resources available at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and its affiliation with the Mass General Brigham healthcare system.

Proving once again the two most beautiful words in the English language are “musical theater,” Million Dollar Quartet opened a charged six-week run at the Theatre Workshop of Nantucket last week. Do. Not. Miss. It.
Elvis fan that I am, easy for me to say. But Million Dollar Quartet depicts one of the most fateful nights in jam session history. Based on the eponymous book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux, the story begins December 4, 1956: the night Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Elvis Presley all find themselves at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee.
Set nearly 70 years ago, MDQ depicts a meteoric event, as several cultural shifts occurred at once. By then, the Golden Age of Television had already superseded the Golden Age of Radio. And a blossoming youth culture in postwar America gave way to distinctly new styles in fashion, music, and social behavior.
To wit, Perkins and Cash were 24 years old, Presley and Lewis just 21 that December night. Onstage however, the actors portraying this youthful group bring ageless vitality to director Hunter Foster’s fresh production. That they also perform all their own music and vocals makes for a high-octane, remarkably entertaining show.
It all begins with the spotlight on Mr. Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records and Sun Studio. Played by Ross Griffin, Phillips affably offers opening context, then switches into full character.
With a clear eye for talent, Mr. Phillips charts the course of the legendary evening as much as everyone else. Meanwhile, Griffin reflects the record producer’s sunny demeanor with brio, reinforced by a dimpled, dapper look.
Of course, the quartet addresses him as “Sir,” while he often calls each of them “Boy.” Their respect for his position and authority is a reminder of midcentury social norms, while his word choice was not uncommon in the Jim Crow era.
Although no one in the quartet is Black, both Perkins and Cash were born into sharecropping families. Not to mention the influence of rhythm and blues
and gospel music on Phillips and the young men. In other words, Phillips uses the word “Boy” to assert a certain power over his musicians. Fame and fortune come with contractual obligations, that’s all.
At the same time, the rockabilly genre Carl Perkins established so well with “Blue Suede Shoes” was still dawning across America. Played by Christopher Wren, who also provides musical direction in this production, Perkins dons a pair of (dark) blue suede shoes. His guitar-strumming leg kicks? Utterly adorable homage to Chuck Berry’s duckwalk.
Naturally, his “See You Later Alligator” is the show’s penultimate tune and by then, I felt I knew Perkins a little bit more.
From the King of Rockabilly to the King of Rock and Roll, along comes Elvis Presley, hip-swiveling, lip-snarling, and owning the stage. Joe Hebel’s Presley has all the King’s swagger and knows just how to grab an Elvis mic to boot.
Arriving at the studio with his girlfriend Dyanne (Mia Massaro), Elvis is as pouty and boyish as the young Elvis probably was. Admittedly, I had momentary flashbacks to the two most recent movies of the Elvis-sphere: 2022s “Elvis” and 2023s “Priscilla.” However, Hebel’s performance snapped me right out it. His high energy and musical focus are pure refreshment.
Speaking of Dyanne, let history show she was no fifth wheel. A supporting character, yes, but one who lends maturity to the boy wonders. Interestingly, while she appears on Elvis’s arm, she seems to have an eye for the Man in Black. Then again, Cash’s smoldering good looks and deep voice could have induced Massaro’s sultry rendition of Peggy Lee’s “Fever.” Bring a small handheld fan for this.
Right on cue, monochrome Mr. Johnny Cash saunters in to Sun Studio and time just stands still. Michael Potter’s clean-cut country music Cash is a study in walking a straight line. He is not alone in figuring out how to disclose important information to Mr. Phillips about his own ambitions either.
Furthermore, synthesizing spirituals and gospel hymns with rockabilly to

by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD Director of Research & Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation
I am spoiled this time of year, lucky to be working out on the Linda Loring Nature Foundation landscape or going out for walks with my dog on one of the various conservation trails around the island. This time of year, mid- to late-July is when the berries are at their peak, and I can easily find a snack while out in the hot summer sun. It’s a fun time to start foraging for your snacks.
Foraging is basically the act of gathering food from the wild. It’s part of our DNA: humans used to forage for survival. For me, now, it’s more about connecting with the place—wherever you may be—and appreciating what’s in season all around you. Here on Nantucket, we have an embarrassment of riches in terms of conservation lands and wild places. Now that it’s mid-summer, we can enjoy nature’s bounty without having to look too hard to find tasty things to gather.
If you are new to the art of foraging, July is the best time to start. It’s peak growing season, which means that many plants are at their best—especially the fruiting varieties. As noted below, we never want to take away from the birds and wildlife who depend on these resources, but right now there are still plenty to go around for most of these bountiful berries.
In and among the grasslands and heathlands of Nantucket, there are a multitude of shrubs that will soon be heavy with fruit. So get out those berry pails, because you are in for a bountiful harvest. Some of the berries below will be familiar: they have become commercial crops. Others may be new. A primary rule of thumb when foraging from the wild is to be sure you know what you are harvesting. Go on a walk with someone who knows, bring an ID book or another way to confirm your find. When in doubt, don’t eat it. With that said, the fruits listed below are generally a good place to start.
The first to come into fruit are lowbush blueberries, ripening early to mid-July. You can find them ripe now along paths and in open heathlands. Low to the ground, these plentiful berries are delicious. My dog especially loves them. These blueberries are generally much smaller than what you would buy fresh in the grocery store, but oh so much sweeter! Lowbush blueberries are one of the most common on Nantucket. With plenty of plants to pick from, you can easily fill a small pail with enough for a pie or a cobbler.
Ripe lowbush means the highbush blueberries will soon follow. As their name implies, highbush are much larger and more dispersed than their shorter counterparts. These are the larger berries more often seen in the produce section. One note about wild highbush blueberries is that, as long-lived shrubs, they sometimes stop fruiting in later years. In cultivation, these shrubs are heavily pruned and often burned periodically to increase fruit production. If you can find some plants in an area of the south coast that has recently been managed, you might be more likely to find some big blues. Keep in mind, these taller blueberry shrubs are often on the edges of wet places, but you’ll have to get to them before the birds feast on them to have any success!
Black huckleberries, my personal favorite, often go underappreciated. The dark purple/black berries are plentiful, as this shrub is one of the most dominant of Nantucket’s native shrubs. Found across the moors, south shore, and heathlands, black huckleberry fruit follow the blueberries around mid- to late-July. They are slightly sweeter than a blueberry, with a similar flavor. The tiny seeds can be eaten (just like a blueberry), but have a little crunch to them that adds texture. These are great berries on top of ice cream, in muffins or pancakes, or just as a snack while rambling in the moors. The plants themselves even look a little like a blueberry. If unsure, turn over a leaf of the plant: huckleberry leaves have a resin that sparkles in the sun. Blueberries don’t. There are other distinguishing features, but this is a good “quick and dirty” ID for a huckleberry.
Ever hear of dewberries? They are what many people refer to as blackberries that grow wild all over Nantucket. All in the same genus (Rubus), dewberries are closely related to blackberries and raspberries. There are multiple species of Rubus growing wild on the island and all are edible. You just need to know which ones are ripe when red and which ones are not ripe until they turn black. I tend to pick sour ones more often than not, but when you get a sweet one warm from the summer sun, all the sour ones seem worth it. The trick is to give the fruit a gentle tug. If it resists, don’t pull harder—that one will be sour. The ripe ones will just fall into your hand. Towards the middle of August, the beach plums finally ripen. The fruit are a dark purple when ripe like the familiar plums found in the store, though smaller. The stone in the center makes it slightly difficult to process, but beach plums make won-

The Board of Trustees of Nantucket Cottage Hospital has elected Bruce A. Percelay as its new chairman. A longtime supporter and former campaign chair, Percelay succeeds Craig Muhlhauser, whose five-year term as chair has concluded. Muhlhauser will continue to serve on the board for a smooth transition.
“Craig’s steady leadership and deep commitment to our mission have left an indelible mark on Nantucket Cottage Hospital,” said Amy Lee, President of Nantucket Cottage Hospital. “We’re fortunate to continue benefiting from his insight as he remains on the board.”
Founded in 1911, NCH is part of the Mass General Brigham network of community hospitals. Percelay was deeply involved in the campaign to build the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital and will help spearhead a new $50 million campaign to raise funds for employee housing. The project is expected to break ground in 2026. “We have benefited tremendously from Bruce’s leadership in the past and are excited that he will now help steer us through both a new campaign and other issues facing the hospital,” said Lee.
Percelay and his wife Elisabeth have two children who were born on Nantucket and have demonstrated their commitment to the hospital by leading the $120 million, three-year campaign, which was the largest private fundraising effort for a community hospital in America.
Percelay indicated, “there is a direct correlation between the quality of care the hospital can provide and the availability of housing for medical personnel. It is essential that the hospital builds sufficient quality housing opportunities to attract and retain the kind of talent we need to deliver the best possible medical care on Nantucket.”
When Chris Bartick first sailed into Nantucket, it felt like more than just a trip—it felt like fate. The artist and founder of luxury fashion brand Respoke was drawn to the island by a feeling he couldn’t explain. “It was like the island was calling me before I understood why,” he says.
What he didn’t realize then was that he wasn’t just discovering a new destination—he was unknowingly returning to his ancestral home.
In 2019, years after that first visit, Bartick sailed back to Nantucket again—this time at the helm of his own boat, looking for a space to open a Respoke store. It was long after Respoke was established at 41 Straight Wharf, through genealogical research, that he discovered his direct connection to Tristram Coffin, one of the original English settlers who led the purchase of Nantucket in 1659 and is considered the island’s patriarch.
“I had no idea I was literally sailing back into my own history,” Bartick says. “When I learned about my family’s deep roots here, it all came full circle. As a designer offering art and fashion to Nantucket’s modern visitors and community, I see myself as a reimagined version of my Coffin ancestors—where they drew from the sea, I draw from the inherent artistry and stories of vintage scarves, reinventing the past into something newly purposeful."

Island people are meant to stay on islands. Them’s the rules. But every now and again, things happen and rules must be broken. This is the tale of a wayward island kid and his recent encounters in a slice of the real world.
For some strange reason, I’ve always had an affinity for Walden Pond, a beautiful expanse located in Concord, MA. Walden Pond is maybe 15 minutes away from Bentley College, now Bentley University (snob appeal much?), my alma mater. This affinity was shared with one Henry David Thoreau, an old dead dude (hat tip to Bill and Ted right there). I’m glad that I had never stumbled into a pop quiz at Bentley that asked me to write a paragraph about the life and times of Henry David Thoreau, because I would have had a tough time conjuring anything up. Um, yeah, he was a trans something or other, right? Yeah, Stevie, you big dummy: Thoreau was a transcendentalist. Do you even know what that means? Nope. Not a clue to this very day. But I do know that he spent a couple of years at Walden Pond in a tiny house (before tiny houses were in vogue), living a minimalist life. No friends, no internet, a wood stove, a bed, and a desk in a place the size of my lawn mower shed. My idea of a minimalist life is living on an island without a Dunkins. Sacrifices must be made, right?
No offense to Mr. Thoreau, but the real reason that I often found myself ditching classes and hanging out at Walden Pond had a lot to do with the comic strip “Doonesbury.” I was addicted to this comic written by Gary Trudeau. Trudeau’s fictional characters lived in some sort of college commune at the also fictional Walden College. True story alert: one drunken Bentley Friday night during my freshman year, my buddy Mark Bradley and I somehow decided that calling Gary Trudeau’s home in Connecticut would be a great idea. We were concerned because one of Trudeau’s most endearing characters, Uncle Duke, had parachuted into Iran to rescue the American hostages and was now missing. This plot line was all consuming for the two of us. Hello operator? Hard to believe, but our favorite author’s phone number was listed in the public registry. I don’t recall much of what Gary Trudeau had to say to us, but I’m fairly certain it involved a strong

create an entirely new sound, Cash’s conscience also struggles to contain his crossover appeal.
On the other hand, Jerry Lee Lewis’s maniacal energy at the piano reminds me the piano is both a string and a percussion instrument. The way Sean McGibbon plays Lewis, the ivory keys are like a prop in an acrobatic vaudeville act. He is a one-man freak show with a twinkle in his eye.
In fact, when Perkins disparagingly compares Lewis to Liberace in the first act, it rolls right off him. Born in the Bayou Country of Louisiana, Lewis was deeply influenced by preachers all his life.
His lip-smacking, tongue-thrusting goofiness aside, Lewis toiled to square the fire-and-brimstone sermons of his youth with exhortations against “temptation, fornication, and damnation.” Lucky for us, one result was “Great Balls of Fire.”
Of course TWN’s Million Dollar Quartet is backed by a million dollar duo: Isaac Foley as Brother Jay on bass and Michael Lucchetti as Fluke on drums. In real life, Brother Jay was Perkins’s sibling. Fluke played mainly with Perkins and Cash throughout his career.
Lucchetti’s tremendous drumstick-twirling fixed my gaze right away; his dexterity will capture your immediate attention, too. Similarly, the intensity of Foley’s non-stop upright bass-playing packs a wallop the entire show, as well.
Million Dollar Quartet offers theater lovers a foottapping, knee-slapping, night-capping great time. The entire cast puts its all into every number. When they’re not singing, they’re zinging, flinging, and clinging to their shared passion for musical expression and personal freedom.
There are tender moments, too, like when each performer discloses a significant personal loss of someone close to him. This conversation hints at their coping styles, resilience, and family support systems. As each adjusts to incredible fame and fortune, they also form a family of musical pioneers and industry stalwarts.
Transforming culture requires enthusiasm, a word that comes from Greek and essentially means “God within.” And the finale of Million Dollar Quartet is an aisle-dancing party that adds fodder to the old saying, “He who sings, prays twice.”
Sarah Wright embraces theater for its live performance art, storytelling, & shared experience.
Million Dollar Quartet is on the TWN stage through August 23. Full shedule and ticket at theatrenantucket.org
women to connect. Men’s Support groups and programs addressing mental health, substance use, and cultural traditions—such as the Club for Russian-speaking residents—highlight the library’s role as a community connector. Weekly discussions, film screenings, and educational sessions help increase awareness about health issues, combat stigma, and foster understanding across diverse populations. Free Narcan, QPR, and Mental Health trainings are also offered at the library.
Atheneum staff is particularly excited about the ALA Small and Rural Communities Grant for 10k that has funded a Mindful Library for patrons with memory disorders. These adapted reading materials will be available in the Atheneum as well as at Sherburne Commons and The Homestead, two of the island’s senior living facilities. This initiative exemplifies how the Atheneum adapts to the evolving needs of its community, ensuring everyone has access to resources that empower them.
When asked how they identify and create programs so very well suited to the interests and needs of our island community, the Atheneum team answered: “We just pay attention. Sometimes, a conversation with a patron can inspire us to create a program or event. Sometimes, a staff member has an idea for a new program, and we simply go with it. We try to stay connected to our community by engaging with patrons of all ages, collaborating with local organizations, and paying attention to both emerging needs and longstanding traditions...At the end of the day, we’re here for you. And that’s what guides us.”
Sustaining library operations requires imagination, collaboration, passion, and significant fundraising efforts. Unlike many public libraries, the Atheneum raises the majority of its annual operating budget. Fundraising efforts like this weekend’s annual Weekend at the Library serve as vital support pillars, raising approximately 75% of the library’s operating budget.
This year, Weekend at the Library begins July 17 with a free “First Look”—staffers will guests on a day-long “look behind the stacks” at treasures from the vault, storytelling, art, dance, music, and history. Thursday ends with a free concert by Curtis on Nantucket performing live from 7 to 8:30 pm.
At 6 pm on Friday, July 18, ticketed guests will welcome journalist and MSNBC
anchor Stephanie Ruhle and author William D. Cohan at a garden cocktail reception, followed by dinner, and a “fireside chat” style conversation between the two thought leaders.
Saturday, July 19, American Soul and R&B artist Allen Stone will perform live in two back-to-back concerts—one at 6 pm and another at 8 pm—weaving together elements of funk, gospel, folk-rock, and soul to create a sound all his own. The concerts will be followed by a summer garden party.
Tickets are selling quickly: reserve your spot today at Friday’s Thought Leader Dinner with Stephanie Ruhle and Saturday’s Concert & Garden Party with Allen Stone at nantucketatheneum.org/weekend-at-thelibrary-2025
"The wonderful thing about Weekend at the Library,” said Director of Development Maggie O'Reilly, “is that we have the opportunity to feature new talent each year, from all categories of entertainment that align with our mission. We have had musicians for the past few years, but next year we may feature an author or other entertainer. The mission of the library is so broad, and this event is designed to reflect the scope of our mission.”
As the library focuses on the future, it’s staff and volunteers are dedicated to community service. By staying adaptable, inclusive, and responsive, the Nantucket Atheneum aims to continue inspiring residents for generations to come. Supporting it through donations, participation, and shared stories ensures the beloved institution remains a vital part of Nantucket’s fabric—a place where everyone can find a home, a voice, and a spark of creativity.
“Libraries, in general, are among the few truly open and welcoming spaces available to everyone. On an island like Nantucket, where we have people of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances, the library brings us together. It’s a place where you don’t have to buy anything, where you’re not judged, where you can learn, connect, or just be. The Atheneum is more than a library—it’s part of what makes Nantucket feel like home.
“We want our library to keep inspiring people, encouraging them, and helping them grow. We hope our doors are always open, free and welcoming to everyone on the island, all ages, all backgrounds. That’s what the Atheneum is about, and we hope that never changes.”
derful jams and jellies. While still a common native, beach plums are less plentiful than some of the other species mentioned. Because of that, dedicated beach plum foragers stake out their favorite shrubs early in the season and regularly check on their progress. There is also a golden variety found sporadically around Nantucket with warm yellow fruit that is even scarcer. A good beach plum spot is like a good fishing spot, you only share the location with people you love, and you still may need to blindfold them.
Rose hips are also ripe for the picking in August, though usually only the true aficionados go for the hips. Not technically berries, rose hips are the fruit of rose plant. Only the large rose hips from Rosa rugosa (beach rose) are big enough for foraging. The flesh can be eaten without eating the core (like an apple). The hips are high in vitamin C, but not very tasty eaten in the field. Dedicated fans make jelly or jam with the fruit, and it’s fun to try a taste while you’re out for a swim.
September brings ripening fox grape. You’ll know when they’re ripe because you’ll often smell them before you see them. With four big seeds in each grape, they take a bit to chew, but they are sweeter than any store-bought grape. A batch of jelly is a good fall project and a prized possession when given as a gift. I like to enjoy them more as a trail-side treat. Maybe I’m a little too lazy to languish in the kitchen making jelly, but I applaud all who do.
So get out there and have a feast! Or maybe just a taste. But remember these things before you go...
~ Pick only what you are able to use. The birds and animals are also depending on the berry bounty, and we don’t want to over-harvest this resource.
~ Make sure you have permission to pick in your location of choice. Don’t go picking on private property!
~ Remember that most of the conservation land on Nantucket is private property. That said, most conservation properties are open to the public and are fine with a little berry picking for personal use. Be respectful, don’t make new trails, and don’t over-harvest.
~ Know the hazards. Poison ivy grows all over the island often hiding in plain sight. Make sure your berry patch is PI free before picking.
What are your favorite plants to forage? We’ll cover more options as the seasons change. Happy foraging!
The Coffin family legacy on Nantucket runs deep, especially through the sea. Tristram Coffin’s descendants became ship owners, captains, and mariners. One of them, Abraham Coffin, was born on Nantucket in 1750, the son of schoolmaster Benjamin Coffin, who was lost at sea between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
During a whaling voyage in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Abraham and his cousin Davis were asked by their ship’s captain to falsely claim that whale oil acquired from another ship was their own in order to secure a higher bounty. As devout Quakers, they refused. The captain retaliated by putting them ashore on a remote stretch of the Gaspé Peninsula, where Abraham would eventually settle in a cove called L’Anse-aux-Cousins.
There, he met and married Hannah Ascah, a 16-year-old local girl and the daughter of Richard Ascah, a former British Army officer who had been granted land in the region after his service with the Royal Americans regiment. That unlikely exile led to the creation of the Canadian branch of the Coffin family.
Among Abraham and Hannah’s descendants was Rachel Jane Hackett, born in 1853 in Quebec. Her granddaughter, Alice Bartick—Chris Bartick’s grandmother—was raised by Rachel after her mother died when Alice was just four years old. The artistic spirit clearly ran through the generations: Rachel’s daughter Mary Philomene Barry, born in New Hampshire, was a visual artist, holding a doctorate from Boston College, whose legacy of creativity continues in Bartick’s multidisciplinary work today.
Bartick is best known as the founder of Respoke, the brand that transforms vintage designer scarves—think Hermès, Pucci, Ferragamo—into handcrafted espadrilles and other wearable art. At its heart, Respoke is a celebration of reinvention, individuality, and story.
“Respoke is about honoring what already exists and giving it new life,” Bartick explains. “It’s not just fashion—it’s memory, movement, identity.”
That philosophy resonates even more deeply now that Bartick knows his continued on page 23

family’s story: one of adaptation, migration, and resilience. From Abraham’s principled stand to Alice’s reinvention after loss, the theme is clear—nothing is ever truly lost, only transformed.
The Island Was Always Calling
When Bartick learned that his ancestor Abraham Coffin appears on one of Nantucket’s oldest family trees—alongside relatives like Lucretia Coffin Mott and Martha Coffin Wright, both prominent suffragists with the Underground Railroad—it added yet another layer to his connection with the island.
“I didn’t know any of this when I first sailed in,” he says. “But I felt like I belonged here. That feeling came before the facts.”
Nantucket, once a distant dream, has become both a creative home and a personal anchor.
“Whether it’s an iconic vintage scarf turned into something new, or a forgotten family story rediscovered,” Bartick says, “it all reminds me that things don’t end—they evolve. And sometimes, they bring you right back to where you started.”
Respoke is open daily in-season at 41 Straight Wharf • Respoke.com

there’s a large subculture that meets at Walden Pond for distance swimming in the morning. The average distance swimmer seemed to be a tad bit older than me. I didn’t bother to ask if they were into transcendentalism – it was assumed. Polite greetings carried the day.
The next thing I saw was a game warden. In a strange way, I was glad to see this warden as I was a duly licensed freshwater fisher in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, something that I had never had to be previously. The reason is that the freshwater ponds in Nantucket were somehow exempted from Massachusetts regulations when New York transferred the ownership of the island to Massachusetts. Imagine my disappointment when I got a polite “good morning” and a nod instead of a request to see my freshly printed fishing license!
I made my way across the street and down the trails towards the pond, accompanied by maybe twenty swimmers. I was glad to be fishing somewhere I didn’t need to be on the watch for seals and sharks, but it was apparent that swimmers might be an issue. We shuffled past a large construction site. A significant project was being undertaken to rebuild a bathhouse. The original, built in 1948, was being replaced with one that was ADA compliant. The construction was very incongruent with the natural beauty of the preserve. I get it, but somewhere, on the wood line, the ghost of H.D. Thoreau was glaring his disapproval.
The water in Walden Pond is so very clear. Can I say gin clear? Sorry if that comes off like a Dashiell Hammett ripoff, but I’m here to tell you that you could see the bottom thirty feet away! The shallows were filled with minnows and beautiful little bluegill. The minnows did the pedicure thing to my feet as I waded around. It was a little weird, but I have to say I didn’t hate it.
I had a couple of ideas as to how best attack the pond, but I saw a chance to gain some local knowledge floating nearby. A man in a perfectly laid out fishing kayak was pedaling past me. I asked for some guidance and Bill Eicher was kind enough to help. “Throw a Ned rig! I just caught a 15-inch smallmouth!” Bill gave me some hints as to where a shore-based fisher might find the most success. I had that feeling that I get when I’m out on Great Point and I meet someone new to the area. It’s a universal thing. Transcendentalists believe in the inherent goodness of people. Based on my fortuitous meeting with Mr. Eicher, I would have to agree.
I danced on the learning curve. I lost a couple of lures to the rocks that cover a good portion of Walden Pond’s bottom. I added about 50 yards of 6 lb . fluorocarbon line to my spinning reel to eliminate spooking the fish with my braided backing line. I tried a variety of bass fishing techniques: throwing a chatter bait, the Ned rig (as Eicher suggested), a shaky head rig, and, finally, a drop shot rig. When the drop shot rig didn’t produce with a minnow-style bait attached, I changed it out for a long, skinny plastic worm. That got the job done—a feisty little smallmouth bass grabbed it and gave a good account of itself. After a quick photo op, it was released back to the beautiful water. I felt like the king of Walden Pond. The ghost of Thoreau gave me a golf clap as I headed back to my car. There’s a beautiful healing quality to large bodies of water. My time at Walden Pond helped me transcend the uncertainty of my college years. It certainly helped me keep my stuff together during a difficult week. I am grateful. Having said all that, I can’t wait to get back to my island to chase blues and stripers. See you all soon!

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
