Honoring Artist G.S. Hill

For nearly half a century, artist G. S. Hill has captured the essence and spirit of Nantucket in his paintings, documenting island life in beautifully textured and precise works that let viewers feel the wind in the sails and smell the salt air. His work is in exhibitions and collections around the world. And his contributions to our island extend far beyond his canvases.

This year, as the Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) celebrates its 80th anniversary, the organization is honoring Hill with their Lifetime Achievement Award at a special dinner on July 31. He’s only the second artist in AAN’s history to receive this prestigious recognition.

“I'm overwhelmed: it’s the Artists Association’s 80th anniversary, and I’m 80 this year,” reflected Hill during a recent interview. The lifetime achievement award came as a surprise to this modest artist. “I feel so honored,” he said simply,

Inspired by Sea & Sky

In her waterfront studio on Easy Street, Nantucket, jewelry designer Susan Lister Locke transforms precious metals and gemstones into timeless pieces that capture the eternal beauty of the sea and sky and reflect the stories of those who wear them. In her gem-lined playground, she makes jewelry to be worn, loved, and lived in.

“My inspiration is the ocean and the sky and the gems...I’ve lived by the ocean my entire life, and every day the sky is different—fierce or mellow, cloudless, colorful, it’s ever-changing,” she explained during a recent interview. Nantucket-born and now worn globally, this talented designer marries rich color with bold texture, transforming gold, precious and semi-precious stones, and pearls into pieces inspired by nature, meaningful moments, and the people

Swim to Fight Cancer

This Saturday, July 26, island resident Natalie Thompson will put on her familiar Swim Across America - Nantucket swim cap and dive off Jetties Beach into Nantucket Sound for a four-mile open-water course, all to make waves to fight cancer. Thompson has been a participant of the Swim Across AmericaNantucket swim every year since the swim started in 2013. She has worked every job at the swim: setup crew, safety kayaker, “angel” swimmer, and, for the past five events, she has been a four-mile swimmer. This year’s swim is different though, and Natalie’s strokes will carry a deeper weight. This year Natalie swims in memory of her father, who passed away from stage 4 renal cancer in June 2024. She also swims in gratitude for the health of her wife Cassie, who also battled cancer with a diagnosis of ocular melanoma in 2019.

Natalie first joined Swim Across America - Nantucket to honor her grandmother, who fought breast cancer. As the years went by, Natalie remained involved, not just because she loved to swim, but because cancer hit too close to home with Cassie’s and then her dad’s diagnosis.

“June 2019 changed why I swim for the rest of my life. My wife was diagnosed with ocular melanoma at 33-years-old. We had two young boys at the time, and suddenly, we were facing cancer head-on,” shared Natalie. “Eight hours after Cassie was first diagnosed we attended a Swim Across America event, and I knew we had a support system like no other. No one at the event knew of her diagnosis, but I left having hope that we would make it through it all. That was the first summer I participated in the 4-mile swim, and it was even more impactful having my wife as my kayaker.”

Natalie also noted that, “Having Swim Across America – Nantucket gear or wearing a Swim Across America t-shirt is a badge of honor on this island. We swim for our family, friends, and neighbors we see every day, so we can make their fight easier. My dad’s chemotherapy infusions and Cassie’s follow-up care were able to be done on-island because of money this event raises. Four-miles in the water is the least I can do to keep that lifeline open.”

The July 26 swim marks the 13th annual swim for Swim Across America –Nantucket. Swim options range from a fun Kids Splash for ages six to 11, to quarter-, half-, and one-mile swims, a two-by-two-mile relay, and the headline four-mile swim. A virtual “SAA My Way” option lets supporters participate virtually from anywhere in the world. Proceeds fund oncology services at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and Palliative and Supportive Care of Nantucket, and support glioblastoma research at Mass General Cancer Center in Boston: programs that allow many patients to stay close to home while receiving worldclass treatment. Since 2013, Swim Across America - Nantucket has raised more than $5.5 million for its local beneficiaries—money that is raised locally stays local.

Pioneers Species You Don’t Want Colonizing

In our society we tend to idealize and idolize pioneers. Think of those intrepid travelers who went west in the mid-1800s. Or those who explored somewhere for the first time. It takes a certain character to be the first to do something: not only spunk, but grit and determination. If you’re the first to settle in a new area, you have to figure out space, resources, safety. How are you going to survive? We admire these qualities in people who start from scratch, find new territory, put a flag on the moon.

But what about plants?

Pioneer species are typically organisms that are the first to colonize or utilize an area after a disturbance. Think of the first plants to spring up after a hurricane, a tornado, or a burn that sweeps through a forest. Pioneer species, in terms of plants, are the first to colonize barren or disturbed environments, paving the way for the establishment of other species in ecological succession. They are crucial for initiating soil development and creating a more habitable environment for later successional species. It’s a chance for new growth—a resetting of the ecological calendar.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot since the recent construction at the Polpis Road-Milestone intersection. I drive by there frequently between dog walks and trips to Moors End Farm. In the 2 months or so since construction ended, the bike path/road edge had changed from loose dirt to a lush green: amazing given our current drought conditions!

But what is this green? Pioneer species! The most prominent of which is a plant that is actually much reviled: Datura stramonium or Bittersweet Nightshade.

Datura stramonium is the Latin name for a plant that goes by many aliases. Someone once told me that anything with a lot of common names has been used for lots of things by lots of people. That is certainly the case for our Datura or jimsonweed, as it is commonly called in our region. It is believed to have originated in the Americas, but is now found around the world. Common names for Datura stramonium vary by region and include thornapple, moon flower, hell’s bells, devil’s trumpet, devil’s weed, tolguacha, Jamestown weed, stinkweed, lo-

coweed, pricklyburr, false castor oil plant, and devil’s cucumber. For now, I will refer to it as jimsonweed.

Jimsonweed is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), the same family as tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, tobacco, and peppers, among others. It is highly variable in looks, as if it morphs to suit its surrounding or perhaps to be in disguise. The stem is stout, erect, leafy, smooth, and pale yellow-green to reddish purple in color. The stem forks off repeatedly into branches and each fork forms a leaf and a single, erect flower. The leaves are smooth and toothed, sometimes undulating, sometimes lobed. The upper surface of the leaves is a darker green, and the bottom is a light green. There is enough variability in the leaves that they have sometimes thought to have been different species only to prove themselves to all be Datura stramonium

Datura generally flowers throughout the summer, so you’ll see it now. The fragrant flowers are trumpet-shaped and white to creamy or violet. During the day, the flowers are sort of rolled up. The flowers open at night (hence the name “moon flower”), emitting a pleasant fragrance, and are fed upon by nocturnal moths, specifically Sphinx moths. Don’t be fooled by the fragrant flower, though. When crushed, the leaves are stinky: smelling sort of like feet. This is a deterrent for most animals, which is why there is little herbivory of this plant.

Flowers are followed by rounded fruits that are walnut-sized capsules covered with sharp spines at maturity. The capsules split open when ripe to release the numerous flattened tan or brown seeds that are similar in appearance to the seeds of a bell pepper. The plants tend to self-seed and can become invasive. The seeds remain viable in the soil for years.

All of this sounds pleasant or at least benign so far. But not only is this plant not native and invasive in some areas, it is also quite toxic. And like many things that are actually poisonous, it also has medicinal uses.

All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids,

August Is for Blues

Heather Unruh has won a lot of awards over the years. Four Emmy awards for her journalism and the Clarion Award for women in communication. How about the Gracie Allen Award from the group American Women in Radio and Television? Yup, she won that as well. But which award is displayed prominently in the family room of her Nantucket home, you ask? Of course it’s her first place framed August Blues—Nantucket Champion print that she won last year.

“It is my absolute favorite! Walking up to get it at the awards ceremony in front of all of those anglers—it was a little scary!” Can’t fool me, Heather: you don’t scare easily. And you absolutely crushed the competition last tournament. Heather Unruh was dominant in the boat fishing division in a way much like Mike Tyson was dominant in the heavyweight division from 1985 to 1990. She knocked out the other anglers and won both the Triple Strike boat prize and the largest boat-caught bluefish. Her closest competitor in both categories was her husband, Hal Beacham. Heather was unstoppable. Her 38-inch bluefish was the biggest entry in the competition by far.

“When I pulled in the 38-inch blue, we turned on the music and danced! I had read an article where a commercial fishing guy had said that he could bring his clients out fishing and it could be anybody’s tournament. It put some fear in me. We fished until the very end!”

I asked Heather if she was ready to defend her title. “I had shoulder surgery four months ago. A total clean-out. It hurt! The recovery time ends right around the tournament start date. I’m channeling all my energy for this!” I sure wouldn’t bet against Heather repeating as champion. Hal could certainly sneak into contention. After all, Hal finished second in last year’s boating division. “It was a team thing. One drives, one fishes. Hal had an uncanny ability to put me in the right spot. But there’s so much more to this than a fishing tournament.”

Heather is so right. The August Blues tournament, coming into its third year, honors our own August “Augie” Chotkowski, a young man who’s fought the battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy for all of his 29 years. The emphasis is always on the fun in this tournament, but the cause that gave rise to it is very serious. Proceeds from the August Blues tournament help fund Parents Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). From parentprojectmd.org: “Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy fights to end Duchenne. We accelerate research, raise our voices to impact policy, demand optimal care for every single family, and strive to ensure access to approved therapies.”

So let’s discuss the awesome framed fish print that the tournament winners take home. The prints are created by Nantucket artist Peter Van Dingstee, who uses the Japanese style of Gyotaku. That’s the art where actual fish are used to create images on delicate rice paper. Per Pete’s website: “Gyo translates to ‘fish’ and ‘taku means ‘stone rubbing’ in Japanese.” They’re unique, they’re beautiful, and they’re worthy of a place of prominence for the champion who receives one. Peter is all in for August Blues. “I first met Greg (Dr. Greg Chotkowski) and Augie back when I was running the soda fountain on Main Street. Augie and his sister (Honor) used to come in. Over the years, I’ve seen the physical decline in Augie but there’s been no decline in his spirit!” Peter understands physical challenges and is all about supporting those who face difficult battles. “I’ve had two heart attacks and have been on five MedFlights out of here. I’m still blessed to

Free Workshop with Printmaker Bee Shay

Stitching in the company of others is relaxing, and the process becomes a natural meditation, contributing to one’s well-being.

The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) is hosting free workshops on Stitching a Meditation Journal with Bee Shay for adults.

Drop-in classes are held at AAN’s Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive from 6:30-8:30 pm on Tuesday evenings through August 19. Materials are provided, although participants are invited to bring in any additional materials they would like to use or incorporate into their work. Participants may attend a single session or every week.

No stitching experience is necessary to take the workshop. Using recycled textiles, students will create a journal, and then utilize various materials, including found objects such as beads, buttons, trims, and lace in their journals. Bee will teach diverse stitching techniques, both traditional (Kantha, boro, and embroidery) as well as nontraditional contemporary methods, as well as techniques and treatments to change the fabric of the pages themselves both before and after being bound.

Bee Shay has been a printmaker for more than 30 years and has been a longstanding member, instructor and board member of the Nature Printing Society, an international non-profit group whose mission is to teach the love and respect of the natural world through art, with outreach programs into public and private schools and groups all over the world. She is a nationally recognized instructor who decided to stop traveling to focus on her island community.

“Bee is a knowledgeable, talented, and generous teacher, and we are excited to be able to provide this special class to the Nantucket community free of charge, ” commented AAN Education Director Elizabeth Buccino.

“it was unexpected.”

Hill's Lifetime Achievement Award honors not just his artistic excellence, but also his unwavering commitment to giving back to Nantucket. His volunteer work spans decades and has touched countless lives, particularly children. Every July 4th celebration on Nantucket, you’ll find him face-painting for youngsters, transforming small faces into works of art. He has also taught art to children, and he consistently volunteers his time at the August Boston Pops on Nantucket concerts that benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

G.S. Hill is one of the island’s most generous donors of artwork for charitable causes. His paintings have raised tens of thousands of dollars a year for an impressive array of Nantucket organizations, including the Garden Club, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Nantucket High School, The Homestead, Small Friends on Nantucket, the Nantucket Book Foundation, PASCON's Dreamcatcher Auction, and MedFlight. His contributions extend to the AAN Gala, Nantucket Wine Festival, December Delight, the Grand Slam Tournament for Cystic Fibrosis, NiSHA, Nantucket Golf Club, The Lighthouse School, and the Nantucket Historical Association's Baskets & Bubbly and Festival of Wreaths events.

Greg and Judi Hills’ connection to Nantucket began on a fog-shrouded night in 1978, when they first arrived on a late ferry. After settling in at the Jared Coffin House, they took a walk to the end of the wharf, where they discovered The Harbour Gallery “lit up with one of Greg's paintings in the window—a painting of a ship coming out of the fog.” They looked at each other and said, “wouldn't it be great someday to have a gallery here?... we had no clue [during that visit] that we’d own the gallery the next year.”

Reflecting on his long relationship with Nantucket, Hill expressed amazement at the passage of time: “"I can’t believe we’ve been on-island for 46 years! Nantucket has been so good to us, so we try to give back,” he commented.

As an artist, he’s drawn to the sea and the island’s light, early morning or late at night, and misty days. “I love painting on the wharves…the skyline…I never get tired of painting Nantucket.”

who wear them. From iconic signet rings to custom, oneof-a-kind creations, her work reimagines timeless jewelry through a lens of personal expression and everyday elegance.

Browsing through her gallery at 28 Easy Street, clients see a variety of styles and a range of prices. “I started out doing a lot of sculptural designs,” she explained, “and I’ve moved toward more organic designs.” Her work captures the essence of coastal living while remaining sophisticated enough for any venue. Her rings, pendants, earrings, and bracelets are designed to integrate seamlessly into their owners’ lives. Whether it’s a pair of earrings that transition from boardroom to dinner party, or a bracelet that becomes a daily talisman, each piece is crafted to be both beautiful and functional.

Lister Locke’s custom creations range from reimagined family signet rings that honor ancestral traditions while embracing contemporary aesthetics to entirely original pieces that celebrate life’s pivotal moments. She works with different metals and an extensive palette of precious and semi-precious stones, selecting each gem not just for its beauty but for its ability to convey emotion and meaning.

“I have very high-quality gems—I use my gems as paints...I let them talk to me,” she explained as she displayed a breathtakingly beautiful ring she created around a rare Paraiba Tourmaline that shimmered with luminous color deep as a tropical sea. “Tourmaline is not rare,” she explained, “but this one is: there are only two lines in the world. It’s important to be open to options, not just traditional [stones]...I love emeralds and rubies and diamonds, but a gem should first and foremost speak to a person. They should wear the jewelry, it should not wear them!”

Susan Lister Locke's approach to jewelry design is deeply collaborative, rooted in the belief that the finest pieces emerge from understanding not just what a client wants, but who they are. Her process begins with conversation— listening to stories, discovering passions, and uncovering the moments that have shaped her clients’ lives. This intimate approach allows her to create custom pieces that become more than accessories: they become tangible expressions of identity and memory.

“I get to know my clients’ tastes,” Lister Locke explains, “and I design to match their skin tone, hair color, eye color...I can source gems that clients want if I don’t have the

Swim to Fight Cancer

Event co-directors Jill Roethke and Jim Pignato said the swim’s impact is woven into daily island life. “When someone here has a cancer diagnosis, they know they can now get treated right here on the island,” Jill Roethke said. “Natalie and her family’s story shows how our community rallies so no one fights solo.” Her two sons, now 11 and 9, have grown up handing out towels at the finish line and cheering as their mother emerges from the water.

“It’s a special moment every year when they watch me finish,” Natalie said. “They know I swim for their grampie and their mom.”

Nationally, Swim Across America has generated more than $100 million for cancer research since its founding 1987 and has helped fund clinical trials that contributed to FDA-approved immunotherapies such as Keytruda, Opdivo, Yervoy and Tecentriq. Recently, Swim Across America was one of the funders of the breakthrough clinical trials at Memorial Sloan Kettering that showed immunotherapy alone could successfully treat certain types of cancer. Swim Across America also recently announced two first-of-its-kind gene editing innovation grants, awarded to Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute that supports the work of novel gene and base editing techniques used in advanced cancer research, including targeted therapies, immunotherapies and cellular therapies, with the hope that these grants accelerate better, safer and more effective treatments. The nonprofit now supports more than 60 research projects each year and has 10 named Swim Across America Labs at major institutions.

Swimmers, boaters, land volunteers, and donors can join or support the Nantucket event at swimacrossamerica.org/nantucket. “We’re a community on a little island making sure cancer patients spend their precious time with loved ones instead of traveling for care,” Natalie noted. “Every stroke on July 26 will move us closer to a day when no family has to make that journey at all.”

size or shape or cut they desire—I’ll order in a selection they can choose from...I work really hard to make pieces that are unique: copying people doesn’t interest me at all. I want [my jewelry] to be pretty, and I want it to be worn...it’s wearable with a fancy dress or with a t-shirt. A box gets no joy out of them.”

It’s important to Lister Locke that she educates her clients, and she’s not shy about redirecting them to pieces that are better suited to their desires and their goals. “I want my clients to be part of the process—I’d rather have an informed client who understands what they are buying... it’s part of the relationship: integrity is very important to me.”

One of Lister Locke’s valued services lies in her talent to transform inherited jewelry pieces that carry sentimental weight but are outdated in design. Rather than allowing these treasures to languish in the back of drawers and jewelry boxes, she works with clients to honor both the original significance and their contemporary vision with an approach that is respectful and innovative. She carefully assesses each piece of estate jewelry, identifying which elements hold the most meaning—whether it’s a particular gemstone, an engraved detail, or the gold itself—and incorporates these elements into fresh, modern designs. This process allows families to continue wearing and celebrating their heritage while ensuring the pieces remain relevant for lifestyles of today.

In her gallery was a stunning necklace of cameos and baroque pearls that she had recently reimagined for a client. “A woman came in with a pile of jewelry

in dated settings she had recently inherited,” Susan explained, “I took them apart and the pieces had new life... they retained the sentiment of the past, but now they’re wearable.”

While Lister Locke's pieces are undoubtedly special, they are designed to be worn and enjoyed regularly rather than reserved for occasions. Her philosophy of “everyday elegance” means creating jewelry substantial enough to serve as statement pieces while remaining comfortable and practical for daily wear.

What sets Lister Locke apart in the world of jewelry design is her commitment to creating pieces that will endure not just in terms of physical durability, but in emotional resonance. Her attention to detail, from the initial concept through the final polish, ensures that each piece meets the highest standards of craftsmanship while remaining true to its intended purpose.

Susan Lister Locke offers something increasingly rare in today’s marketplace: the opportunity to own pieces that are not just beautiful objects, but meaningful expressions of personal history, natural wonder, and artistic vision.

Through her unique blend of technical skill, artistic vision, and deep understanding of what makes jewelry truly meaningful, Lister Locke has established herself as more than a designer—she is a curator of memories, a translator of emotions, and a creator of future heirlooms that honor both the beauty of the natural world and the stories of the people who wear them.

though the toxicity varies from plant to plant. These chemicals can cause serious adverse effects, including death. But the plant doesn’t want to get you despite what the devil will lead you to believe. These chemical production responses present in Datura function as a natural defense for the plant against dangers like herbivory and various plant pathogens. All that being said, I would suggest just staying away from jimsonweed.

Despite serious safety concerns, people have used jimsonweed to treat asthma, cough, flu, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. It’s also known to cause hallucinations. The name Jimsonweed supposedly comes from Jamestown, Virginia in the 1700s, where soldiers in the English colony of Virginia reportedly consumed the plant and spent eleven days in altered mental states. Jimsonweed poisoning occurs when someone sucks the juice or eats the seeds from this plant. You can also be poisoned by drinking tea made from the leaves. The psychotropic and medicinal properties of jimsonweed can turn toxic and even deadly with small differences in the amount of plant ingested.

Some Native American stories support that Datura stramonium (aka Devil’s weed) was planted by Lucifer himself, in a night with full moon, in order to take revenge on people.

Whether you call it thorny apple or the devil’s cucumber, I advise just staying away. If you want to see for yourself, however, jimsonweed is common on Nantucket. It’s easily found in areas with freshly disturbed soil and along roadside in piles of loose dirt. It is especially prevalent after some disturbance. For now, you can see it on the Milestone bike path near the turn for Polpis Road.

I have gotten several questions over the years about the jimsonweed and what we should do about it. Maybe the Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) could have a work crew pull it all out? Well, my response has been usually to let it be, and it will sort itself out. That might seem counterintuitive advice given that I actively remove non-native invasive species and am the co-Chair of the IPSC

committee. However, in this case, it’s a matter of triage.

We started this article talking about pioneer species, of which jimsonweed is one. But we haven’t yet discussed what happens after initial colonization. In plants, those early colonizers, the pioneers, are later outcompeted. Natural succession takes place in which those disturbed habitats are colonized by other species which can crowd and shade out early colonists. We’ve seen it again and again with jimsonweed: wait long enough and the problem takes care of itself.

Of course, if it’s a plot of land you care about and manage (maybe your own home), you can intervene to speed the process up. Be sure to wear gloves when pulling. Try to remove the taproot. And try to manage prior to the seed pods ripening. Keeping all of that in mind will lead to a higher rate of success.

Other things to keep in mind: jimsonweed seeds last in the soil for years. In one experiment, over 91% of seeds buried at 22 inches survived more than 39 years! Disturbance can always bring it back. If you are initiating a project in your yard, try to ensure that clean fill is used. Jimsonweed seeds, and other invaders, can be a contaminant in unfiltered fill which can exacerbate the problem. Good news is that jimsonweed is somewhat sensitive to drought and so our recent dry conditions may affect them. And they are frost-sensitive, so here’s hoping for a good cold snap in the fall to halt growth and reproduction.

August Is for Blues

be able to create my art. This is a great tournament: I love the energy and am proud to support it! I’m changing up the print a little this year just in case we have a repeat champion.”

Repeating as a champion is easier said than done, right? Well, to be sure, I spoke with a guy who would know a lot about this. As a new member of the Nantucket beach fishing community, he won the 2024 Triple Strike beach prize. He earned this championship by fishing long hours, hunting for the strangely elusive bluefish. This guy fished hard. He told me, “I only live one way. I apply it to everything I do.” The results certainly bore this out. He walked out to the farthest reaches of Great Point and Smith’s Point. He fought through the thick red weed at Low Beach. He saw the sun rising as he fished Point O’ Breakers. Yeah, that’s what champions do. And this fisher knows what being a champion is all about. After all, he was the captain of three New England Patriots Super Bowl winning teams. Congratulations to Tedy Bruschi, the 2024 Triple Strike beach champion!

“Well, we (the New England Patriots) didn’t repeat after our first win (the 2001 Super Bowl victory over the Rams) but we got it in 2003 and 2004. I’d love to repeat but I know that there’s going to be some fierce competition.” I asked Tedy who he thought might make a strong run for the title in 2025. “My son Dante wants to beat me. He’s going to go at it hard!”

Tedy Bruschi has his championship Gyotaku bluefish print hanging over his fishing bench in his garage. “My wife loves it and wanted to hang it in the house but this is where I go before every fishing trip to get my mind prepared. I’ve also got the lure that I used to catch those three big fish hanging with it!”

Tedy is an ardent supporter of the August Blues tournament, so much so that a major tournament prize has been dubbed “The Bru-fish Award”. This award is presented to the fisher who submits the longest bluefish caught from the beach. The 2025 winner will receive a white New England Patriots Tedy Bruschi #54 jersey, signed by the former captain. (Please note: I’m going to be attending the November 9th game in Tampa Bay when our beloved Patriots play the Buccaneers, and I’d look great in a white Bruschi #54 jersey. Just sayin’…)

continued on page 23

Last year’s winner of the Bru-fish award was the awesome Nathan Skerritt. After seeing the announcement last year that a red signed Bruschi jersey would be the prize, Nate had posted on his Instagram page, “I will fight tooth and nail to win this! Tooth and nail!” And he did. Nathan’s 35-inch entry held up and his dream came true. I’m here to tell you, folks, Nate Skerritt is one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet on the beach or anywhere, for that matter. His story is amazing and his passion for life is unmatched. It was wonderful to see him holding the Bru-fish award at last year’s ceremony.

As for this year? “My goal is to make everyone out there cower! No prisoners! I’m throwing everything to try to win the Triple Strike championship!”

I asked Nathan if he ever wears his jersey. “I don’t, but every time that my brother in law Derek is here I remind him of the time Tedy saw him lose a fish. Derek is a total fan-boy. Seeing him lose that fish in the wash as Tedy was driving by is almost better than winning the jersey!” Ouch!

This tournament is a great time for a great cause. I asked Greg Chotkowski and Rick Ramos, the tournament directors, about what new events were coming for 2025. “We’re working hard to get more kids and families to participate. Juniors (age 17 and under) are automatically entered into the tournament with a submission and are eligible for any of the prizes in the junior category. New this year will be our Derby Day, held on Saturday, August 23. This is an island-wide event but we’re setting up home base at Point O’ Breakers (off of South Shore Road). We’re reaching out to the Boys and Girls Club, to the Scouts and are hoping to get a lot of kids fishing. There will be separate Derby Day prizes. We’ll have the grill going as well. This event will go from 6 am to 6 pm.”

I have it on good authority that a certain Nantucket beach fishing guide will be donating a new junior sized rod and reel combo to a Junior beach fishing winner, so let’s get those kids out fishing! I also know that the memories made when fishing with your family and friends last forever. Take a kid fishing and change that kid’s life for the better! To commemorate Hill's lifetime achievement, AAN has produced a special calendar running from July 2025 to June 2026, featuring G.S. Hill's paintings as framable prints. The calendars are available at both the AAN and at G.S. Hill Gallery, offering art lovers a year-long celebration of his work.

As part of AAN’s 80th anniversary celebrations, the organization will display pieces from its permanent collection in their Big Gallery at 12 Straight Wharf, featuring works by Hill—some donated by the artist himself, others contributed by his devoted patrons over the years.

What sets the Artists Association of Nantucket apart, according to Hill, is its depth and community focus. Having been a member of artist associations in Lahina and in Seal Beach, Southern California, he praises the AAN’s comprehensive offerings—classes, workshops, galleries, and year-round programming—noting they serve both artists and the broader island community.

When asked about what he plans to do for the next 80 years, Hill’s answer was characteristically straightforward and passionate: “Paint.” At 80, his enthusiasm for his craft remains undiminished. “I still love painting— I'm so fortunate—I love what I do,” he shared. Currently, he’s working on a series of Rainbow Fleet paintings, continuing his lifelong depiction of Nantucket's maritime character.

In a year when both artist and AAN celebrate eight decades of contribution to the arts, G.S. Hill’s recognition feels not just well-deserved, but also perfectly timed—a celebration of the enduring power of art to transform both creator and community.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
