Behind the Seams Quilt Project & Events

As part of the Nantucket Historical Association’s 2025 featured exhibition, Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket, they have invited Nantucket community members to contribute a panel to a conceptual quilt. A celebratory display of the works of art will be revealed at the NHA’s Community Day, planned for August.

“There is a long-standing history of community quilt-making that our exhibition touches on and that we have examples of in our collection,” explained Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director. “So we are excited to spearhead the creation of a piece of work that can be in this same spirit and showcase the story of the Nantucket community today.”

Details on how to participate in the Community Quilt project, can be found on nha.org/community-quilt-project—but don’t delay: panels are due by July 1.

Behind the Seams: Clothing and Textiles on Nantucket is on display in the Nantucket Whaling Museum on Broad Street, with more than 150 objects from the NHA’s costume and textile collections that tell stories of making, meaning, and island identity from across Nantucket history.

“So many aspects of island history can be explored through textiles and clothing,” said Michael Harrison, NHA Chief Curator and Obed Macy Research Chair. “The NHA is excited to present visitors with a rare look at some of the most intriguing objects in our collection—the clothing and textiles that people created and used on Nantucket in the past.”

On view through November 2, Behind the Seams features clothing, accessories, household textiles, and tools for sewing and textile production from the NHA’s 2,000-piece costume and textile collections. Rarely seen objects, assembled from more than two centuries of clothing and textiles on Nantucket, demonstrate the skill and artistry of island makers and reveal the stories that clothing and textiles can tell.

Exhibition themes explore textile production and trade—from raw materials to finished garments—as well as the relationships, communities, identities, and

What’s New ON N ANTUCKET

New Way to Explore Nantucket History

In May, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) launched a new podcast titled The Nantucket Gam to explore a wide breadth of Nantucket history, reach a broader audience, and connect the island’s history to present-day island life. Listeners can enjoy a different interpretive style of Nantucket history that is conversational rather than a traditional museum experience.

“We are very excited to launch The Nantucket Gam after much discussion and consideration. Our Research Library and visitor services staff has researched and planned extensively to get this off the ground and we are eager for our members and new audiences to listen in,” said Niles Parker, NHA Gosnell Executive Director.

The podcast name—Nantucket Gam—was inspired by what islanders called a social meeting or informal conversation among whalers at sea. Each episode follows a particular theme, consisting of about 20 minutes of storytelling and conversation around the topic, followed by a guest offering present-day information about the theme. The most recent episode “Free in the Sea” examines the 1977 Secession Movement with Senator Dylan Fernandes adding perspective.

Free Rides to Nantucket Cottage Hospital

In response to a request from the social workers at Nantucket Cottage Hospital and some island residents, the Nantucket Regional Transit Authority (NRTA) has added a stop to their Mid-Island and Miacomet Loop routes directly in front of the portico at the main entrance of the hospital.

“Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s new onsite bus stop now offers a free, convenient, and year-round transportation option for both patients and staff,” said Amy Lee, hospital president and COO. “By encouraging riders to use public transit, the [NRTA] stop eases pressure on the hospital’s limited parking spaces and supports smoother traffic flow along our busy summer roads. This addition demonstrates our commitment to sustainable mobility solutions that benefit the entire island community.”

In addition to the new stop at the hospital for those two routes, the NRTA has also adjusted some stops to better serve the public. The outbound stop at Orange Street and Landmark House has been moved to Orange Street and Dave Street. The Atlantic Avenue and Prospect Street stop has been relocated to Vesper Lane and Surfside Road. Thanks to support from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, passengers ride for free on NRTA busses during 2025. nantuckethospital.org • 508-825-8100

Marine Science for Students

Maria Mitchell Association, in collaboration with Great Harbor Yacht Club Foundation (GHYCF), the Nantucket Shellfish Association (NSA), and the Town of Nantucket Natural Resources Department Brant Point Shellfish Hatchery (ToN BPSH), is offering a two-week Marine Science Research and Mentoring Program for students grades eight through twelve.

This immersive, hands-on research experience is centered on Nantucket's iconic bay scallops. Students will explore ecology, fisheries policy, economics, chemistry, and mechanics. They’ll take part in every stage of the histology lab process. The program culminates in a group lab presentation, along with individual presentations on mentored research topics.

This student-driven work contributes to a larger phenology study on the health and spawning potential of our Harbor's wild bay scallop population. Instituted in 2016 by Dr. Valerie Hall, this program offers a unique blend of professional guidance, scientific exploration, and academic career development. Some scholarships are available for Nantucket students.

As of press date, there are spots left for students in the following sessions:

• Session III: June 30 - July 11 • Session III: July 14 - July 25

Sharing Talent and Inspiration

Artists Association of Nantucket’s first artist talk in their 2025 Summer Series will be held this Monday, June 30, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in AAN’s new Federal Gallery at 8 Federal Street. Sherre Wilson-Liljegren, painter/photographer/mixed media artist and lifelong AAN member, will talk about her process and her inspiration, and she’ll answer questions and converse with guests.

Through the season, a dynamic lineup of visiting artist-instructors will be featured in this Summer Series. These professional artists will talk about their creative process, practice, and inspirations while sharing examples of their work. The talks provide guests with an opportunity to gain insight into an artist’s work and learn about the artistic process. Artist Talks are scheduled on Mondays from 5:30-6:30 pm and take place at either the Federal Gallery or in the Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive.

The next artist talk will feature abstract realism painter Anthony Padula on Monday, July 14; and on Monday, July 28, painter and draughtsman Dean Fisher will present. Later in the summer, at the Visual Arts Center, contemporary painter Nancy Colella will give a talk on Monday, August 11, while textile artist and printmaker Lisa Sartori will speak on Monday, September 8.

The Artists Association of Nantucket hosts visiting artist teachers at their Visual Arts Center at 24 Amelia Drive in the Kaaren and Charles Hale Resident Apartment. Thanks to the Hales’ generosity, the residence enables AAN to bring a variety of interesting and innovative teachers to our island to inspire the Nantucket community. AAN’s Nantucket Artists in Residence (AIR) program hosts both funded and paid artist residencies and provides visiting artists the opportunity to participate in our year-round art community. Artists are invited to reflect, restore, and revitalize their art practice as they explore Nantucket’s natural beauty and engage with our island artists.

To learn more about AAN’s upcoming Artist Talks, as well as the organization’s summer studio and ceramic classes, residencies and events, visit nantucketarts.org and follow on Instagram @ackartists.

Water, Water, Everywhere, But...

Last week, Nantucket was placed under a Level 1 drought by the Massachusetts Drought Management Task Force, prompting mandatory restrictions on outdoor water use. Then, over last weekend, we learned that the town’s primary water pump suffered a mechanical failure, leaving the island’s water storage tank at “critically low” levels. The ensuing water use ban has included all non-essential water use, and applies only to properties connected to the municipal water system.

As an island surrounded by water, we don’t often think about our limited freshwater systems. How prone are we, on Nantucket, to these drought conditions?

While the Northeast is generally considered a moist region, droughts, including “flash droughts,” are not uncommon. Massachusetts actively manages drought conditions through a Drought Management Plan and monitors conditions using various indices. As recently as November of 2024, most of Massachusetts was under a Level 3—Critical Drought designation, but the Cape and Islands were exempt from that distinction. At that time, the drought was driven by unprecedented low rainfall over several months, which led to dried streambeds, critically low groundwater levels, and environmental challenges that affect ecosystems, water supplies, and fire safety. Nantucket was exempt at that time, but, as evidenced by our recent designation, we are not immune.

Low rainfall is one of the primary initial causes of drought. To help us understand precipitation patterns on Nantucket and how they fit into the bigger regional and national pictures, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF) became a precipitation center for the island, monitoring multiple aspects of our precipitation with different and complementary projects. Since May of 2014, we’ve been

Curtain Goes Up in New Island Theater

The curtain goes up July 3 on the debut season of ACK Theatre Company, Nantucket Performing Arts Center’s new professional theater company in residence, with What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck.

Nantucket Performing Arts Center (NPAC) is Nantucket’s newest destination for the arts. The nonprofit acquired the theater building at 5 North Water Street earlier this year and is transforming it into a year-round hub for performance, artistic collaboration, and community gatherings. “NPAC is preparing to raise the curtain on a new era for the performing arts on Nantucket,” said Executive Director Drew Kowalkowski, who brings 15 years of experience in Broadway and nonprofit leadership and who serves as producer for the theater company.

ACK Theatre Company builds on Nantucket’s reputation as a summer home for great theatre by creating productions that entertain, inspire, and reflect the power of live performance. “ACK Theatre Company is the perfect way to launch this next chapter—serving our community with exceptional theatre and collaboration across the island’s vibrant arts scene,” said Kowalkowski.

Playwright Heidi Schreck’s boundary-breaking play, What the Constitution Means to Me, breathes new life into the U.S.Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans. As a teenager, Schreck paid for college by winning constitutional debate competitions across the country. In this powerful and deeply personal piece, she steps into the role of her 15-year-old self to reexamine the founding document—not as an abstract ideal, but as something that has shaped and sometimes failed women in her family across four generations. Blending memoir, history, and civic dialogue, the play invites audiences to consider how the Constitution affects our lives. Originally performed by Schreck herself, the play was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and ran for over 200 performances on Broadway.

In NPAC’s production, acclaimed actor Nina Hellman takes on the role of Heidi, bringing emotional depth and personal resonance to the piece. Hellman’s

values revealed by textile objects created and used by Nantucketers. Clothing brands that reflect the summer resort and products from the island’s robust craft revival movement extend the themes of making and meaning into the twentieth century. Behind the Seams highlights the persistence of sustainable practices, demonstrating how islanders have cared for and valued clothing and textiles. Together, the themes of making, meaning, and sustainability reflect Nantucket’s history as a seaport, its shift from a whaling economy to a summer resort, and the legacy of the island’s talented textile practitioners.

The NHA is offer an exciting slate of gallery activities and public programs, special events, and workshops to support the exhibition. This Wednesday, July 2, artist and activist Diana Weymar will give a free talk at Greater Light, 8 Howard Street on Interwoven Stories.

On July 7, the NHA Decorative Arts program will offer a workshop in Shibori, a Japanese dyeing technique with indigo. Every Monday afternoon in July, a Decorative Arts Needlepoint Sampler class will be held.

In the Discovery Center, hands-on family programming includes a Family Tactile Talk Monday through Thursday at 10:15 am, followed by a craft participants make and take home.

For details and registration in these and the many other special programs offered by the Nantucket Historical Association, visit the What’s On section at nha.org. Additional Community Quilt panel contributions and displays will continue into the fall at NHA programs and events and conclude with an exhibition finale celebration in October that will include an auction of the Community Quilt panels. taking daily precipitation measurements as part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). This community science network was started by the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University in 1998. The strength of this data set lies with hundreds of monitors collecting data with the same exact rain gauge using the same set of standard protocols in all 50 states. The data collected are then publicly available for anyone to use via their interactive website. Aside from curious citizens, the data are used by the National Weather Service, other meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, insurance adjusters, and the USDA, among others.

Many of us have had the experience of talking to someone in Madaket where it’s raining and being in town where the streets are still dry. The more rain stations, the better! With the CoCoRaHS program, anyone can establish a gauge. There are currently 10 CoCoRaHS stations on the island, though not all regularly record precipitation. You can check out summary info for the LLNF station here: dex.cocorahs.org/stations/MA-NT-1 .

LLNF also collects daily precipitation data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as part of their Cooperative Weather Observer (COOP) program. LLNF became an official climate site in 2017 when we became a COOP station. Through the COOP program, more than 10,000 volunteers take daily weather observations at National Parks, seashores, mountaintops, and farms as well as in urban and suburban areas.

The COOP program is the nation’s largest and

oldest weather network. It was established in 1891 to formalize the collection of meteorological observations and record climate conditions in the United

States based on the ideas of Thomas Jefferson. Because the network’s observers have generated consistent long-term historical climate data, the network has established an instrumental record of climate. Climatic atlases for the country are based on decades of observations from COOP observers. These data are invaluable in learning more about the floods, droughts, heat and cold waves affecting us all. COOP data plays a critical role in efforts to recognize and evaluate the extent of human impacts on climate from local to global scales. The LLNF COOP site adds to this historic data set and help create more accurate weather predictions for the island.

Of course, drought is more than just lack of rainfall. And what does it mean to “recharge” our public water supply?

Nantucket’s sole source aquifer is where we get all our freshwater; both the public water system and private wells. This glacial aquifer relies on rainfall filtering through the island’s sandy soil. The aquifer is abundant but not unlimited. Private wells draw from the aquifer, but so does the Wannacomet Water Company, Nantucket’s public water provider. Which draws on the aquifer from five wells. According to the Town’s website, two wells pump groundwater from a shallow aquifer at about 75 feet, while the remaining three wells pump groundwater from a deeper aquifer at about 150 feet. The Siasconset Water Department (also part of the public water supply) serves a small portion on the eastern end of the island drawing from two wells in that area.

The level one drought conditions alone wouldn’t be a huge cause for alarm regarding the aquifer. With the water pump issues being exacerbated by the drought conditions, we all need to work together to conserve our precious water resources. There are, of course, mandatory restrictions prohibiting “non-essential” water use (nantucket-ma.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1366). There are also recommendations for water conservation like delaying laundry and dishwasher loads or taking shorter showers. At the time of this writing, the pump has been fixed, but we know this problem isn’t going away anytime soon.

Droughts have always been a part of natural climate cycles; however, humandriven climate change exacerbates their severity. Rising temperatures increase evaporative demand, which means the atmosphere pulls more moisture from water bodies, soil, and plants. This phenomenon transforms moderate droughts into severe ones. Recent studies have shown that warming trends make droughts last longer, cover larger areas, and cause more significant environmental harm. So we should expect more drought conditions and the accompanying water restrictions in the future.

Fishing with the Coach

you know if you disappointed him. That’s all it took: the profound respect we all had for Earl would make us get back in line. Matt gave me those same vibes.

So what does a high school bass fishing coach do? Matt told me that some of his more important jobs involved logistics and keeping everyone safe. “We have anywhere from five to ten boats on the water, depending on the year. We usually start the year with about 35 to 45 students interested in fishing. About 20 to 25 of them show up for the meetings in the first few weeks. There will be around 15 guys who are really fired up about it and are wanting to fish as much as possible, and have the skill set to be competitive.” Yikes—ten sleek, high-powered bass fishing boats on a lake, operated by kids who are 14 to 18 years old—what could possibly go wrong?

Matt laughs and says that he’s been blessed to have very high character team members. “We have had some incredible young men on the Team over the years. We have been fortunate to win our Regional Tournament four times over the years (there’s four regions in Kentucky and ours is the biggest). We have had two particularly talented and dedicated anglers these past four years and they have won it three times!”

Matt explained that the kids tend to understand the significant responsibilities that they have when they’re on the water. They also understand that their families have made a significant investment in boats and related equipment (bass boats properly set up usually start around $30,000, not that I’m looking, of course). Thus, the team members understand that they need to pay significant attention when they’re on the water.

“I was very fortunate this past season to have a great bunch of seniors. They’re on the water a lot more than I have been recently so a lot of times I let them help coach the younger kids in group discussions. Four of my graduating seniors are going to join their college fishing teams next year, with three of them going to Western Kentucky and the fourth to a college in Alabama.”

Matt explained that he’s ready to help any and all students learn about freshwater bass fishing. “The first thing that we do is work on casting. Freshwater bass fishing requires proficiency with both the baitcasting rig and spinning gear.

The next thing that we teach is how to break down a lake. Understanding structure is a key to bass fishing.”

I decided to put Matt to the test. My freshwater adventures in Florida have helped me understand the need for employing the baitcasting setup in order to gently pitch a fishing lure into an area where a fish might be hiding, waiting to ambush an unsuspecting food source. Of course, my pathetic attempts to quietly land a lure close to a downed tree limb or other promising structure often sounded like I was throwing bricks into the water. Matt helped me out as we waited out a tide change at Point O’Breakers last summer. Of course I had brought my underutilized baitcasting rod and reel to the beach. Coach Matt eagerly worked with me: “The key is to keep the bait low to the water during the whole cast. Just get comfortable with the pendulum of the lure. Keep your elbow close to your side and get the pendulum to accelerate as it’s going out. The momentum needs to all be forward, all in one motion.” Matt’s pitching motion was beautifully fluid. Mine looked like a guy falling out of a tree. Thanks to Matt’s

good coaching, I am much smoother now. I still refer to the instructional video I took of Matt last summer!

Coach Yarborough is a fishing madman. His mom’s Nantucket house is on Quince Street, so Matt and his daughter Emma (16) and son Ted (14) have been walking down to Brant Point to fish for scup. Matt adapted some freshwater bass fishing techniques to Nantucket scup fishing and the results were great. Matt and I laughed at how it doesn’t matter what we’re catching, as long as we’re fishing!

I was treated to a Great Point fishing trip with Matt, Emma, and Ted this week. The wind was howling at maybe 25 knots at the Point, but the Yarborough crew were not deterred. We eventually moved to the eastern edge of Great Point. Although the fish were not cooperative, Matt and I witnessed a Great White shark breaching offshore, an absolute WOW moment!

Matt Yarborough is a fascinating guy for reasons that don’t involve fishing. His teaching includes guitar classes, percussion, keyboard and a class called Advanced Instrumental Music, aka Rock Band. Matt also teaches a digital music composition class using the GarageBand app. He plays in a variety of bands, most significantly playing trombone in a 70s cover band called Caribou

“One of my former music students is Ian Abel. He’s going to blow up real soon. He’s a great guy and a good friend.” Hmmmm… That name was familiar. I searched for Ian Abel on Spotify and listened to his most popular song listed called “Home.” I recognized it immediately from the Sirius XM Outlaw Country music station! Yeah, Matt, I’m with you about Mr. Abel—he’s about to launch into the stratosphere!

And why wouldn’t Ian Abel excel? Like the graduating high school students who will represent their respective colleges next year, he had good coaching. And good coaching builds excellent fundamentals. These young men were all blessed to be coached by Matt Yarborough. I was glad to get to fish with him again and can’t wait to do it again next year!

Matt’s daughter took the Brant Point photo of her dad holding the scup with the Lynx in the background. Also, the students pictured with Matt in the fishing photos have granted permission for the pictures to be used in this publication.

Next week, Nantucket Performing Arts Center will present A Night for Swifties, a new concert event celebrating the music of Taylor Swift, for five performances only on July 9, 10, and 11. The concert production features a company of Broadway vocalists and musicians, joined by special guest performers from the Nantucket community.

The concert is conceived, arranged, and directed by Drew Wutke, a New Yorkbased music director, pianist, and producer whose wide-ranging credits include work with Tony Award winner André De Shields, Broadway stars Kelli O’Hara and Tituss Burgess, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Michael R. Jackson. Wutke served as music director for MCC Theater’s celebrated Miscast Gala for several seasons and has worked extensively in theatre, cabaret, and television. “A Night for Swifties” was originally produced for Westport Country Playhouse, where it quickly sold out to enthusiastic Swifties of all ages.

“A Night for Swifties” will feature reimagined arrangements of songs from across Swift’s nearly two-decade career, including selections from albums such as Fearless, 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, and Midnights. The concert aims to reflect the diversity and emotional depth of Swift’s songwriting, performed by a cast drawn from both stage and screen.

“We’re excited to bring something joyful and contemporary to NPAC this summer,” said NPAC Executive Director Drew Kowalkowski. “Taylor Swift’s music has had a profound cultural impact, and this concert allows us to explore that through the lens of live performance and open our space to a wider variety of performances, beyond the plays we have slated for our inaugural summer.”

On August 1, Theatre People, or The Angel Next Door by Paul Slade Smith opens, directed by Nantucket favorite Mark Shanahan. Set in a glamorous Newport mansion in 1948, this fast-paced screwball comedy blends romantic chaos and backstage antics with classic flair. Featuring a weekend of misadventures among two scheming playwrights, a pair of unruly actors, a novice novelist, and a no-nonsense housekeeper, Theatre People is a love letter to the glorious madness of the stage.

They sure don’t make them like ‘Theatre People’ anymore!” says Shanahan. “It’s fast, funny, and full of heart—just what summer on Nantucket calls for.”

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
