The block party at the African Meeting House, 29 York Street, runs from 11 am to 3 pm and will include music, a documentary screening, games, arts & crafts, food, and more. Juneteenth, known by some as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Specifically, it marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and all remaining enslaved people were free—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
The Proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." Although the Emancipation Proclamation itself did not end slavery in our nation, after January 1, 1863, every advance of federal troops expanded the domain of freedom. Also, the Proclamation announced the acceptance of black men into the Union Army and Navy, “enabling the liberated to become liberators.” By the end of the Civil War, nearly 200,000 black soldiers and sailors had fought for their freedom with the Union.
By the time the news reached Galveston on that 19th of June, delivered by Major General Gordon Granger, the ratification process of the 13th Amendment (abolishing slavery) was already underway.
The first Juneteenth celebrations occurred in 1866 among the formerly enslaved. Since then, festivities have included gatherings of family members, reading the Emancipation Proclamation, barbecues, singing spirituals, and dancing. In 2020, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts joined 46 other states and the District of Columbia in officially recognizing Juneteenth's historical and present-day significance.
This Thursday’s event is hosted by the Town of Nantucket’s Culture & Tourism Department, Museum of African American History Boston|Nantucket (MAAH), Nantucket Chamber of Commerce, and the Nantucket Historical Association. “Juneteenth is a day of celebration that honors the numerous emancipation days around the country. We are honored to partner with the Town, Chamber of Commerce, and the Nantucket Historical Association for a unifying
Theater Workshop of Nantucket has opened their 69th season with a riotously funny, fast-paced farce about a romantic rendezvous gone awry. The Cottage is a satirical exploration of fidelity and identity, lampooning romantic entanglements and questioning societal expectations, with a feminist wink at traditional gender roles.
TWN calls their production “a deliciously naughty night, ” and with their talented cast, impeccable direction, and flawless production, The Cottage is an evening of fun that will keep you smiling.
The Cottage is playing in Bennett Hall at 62 Centre Street through June 21. Tickets to all Theatre Workshop productions and their summer gala featuring RAIN, visit TheatreNantucket.org.

Nantucket oysters have earned their reputation as some of the best in the world—a claim backed by diners from New York to Europe who return to the island year after year. But what many oyster lovers don’t realize is that these briny delicacies are doing more than just delighting palates.
From filtering water to protecting salt marshes from erosion to enhancing biodiversity, oysters play a vital role in coastal ecosystems. And on an island like Nantucket, where people have been living off the water for at least 3,000 years, that role is becoming increasingly important as sea levels rise and climate patterns shift.
Most people know that oysters filter water—and they do, at an extraordinary rate. According to Town of Nantucket assistant biologist Griffin Harkins, a single oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of seawater per day.
Tara Riley, Shellfish and Aquatic Resources Manager for the Town of Nantucket, noted a drop in levels of nitrogen loading in the head of the harbor, where about 60 acres of oyster farms operate.
Sean Fitzgibbon of Devil’s Creek Oysters said Wauwinet Bay, where his 10acre lease is located, “has never been cleaner than at the peak of summer when we’ve got all the oysters up here filtering.”
But oysters do more than clean the water.
“Coastal resilience has become a big topic in the last six or seven years,” said Dr. Jen Karberg, Director of Research and Partnerships at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. “Particularly because we're an island, so we're seeing the impacts of climate change so directly,” she said, “and we’re trying to figure out how we can use nature-enhanced, existing natural solutions to make Nantucket more capable of responding to change in the future.”
In 2021, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, with support from Brant Point Hatchery, built the first intertidal oyster reef in Massachusetts, located in

“It’s in his blood.”
“He comes by it naturally.”
How many times do we hear someone say things like this? I’m guessing that these are common refrains if you’re hanging out around the University of Texas football field, watching young Arch Manning warming up. Arch, projected to be one of college football’s better quarterbacks this season, is the son of Cooper Manning. Cooper was a football player at one time as well, destined to play for Ole Miss, but a diagnosis of spinal stenosis caused Cooper to leave the game. Cooper went on to have a successful career as an entrepreneur, a slight variation of the quarterback business.
Cooper Manning does have a couple of younger brothers, of course. They’re named Payton and Eli. Rumor has it that they were pretty good at the quarterback position as well. It’s in their blood, you see. They came by it naturally. Their father is Archie Manning, perhaps the most famous quarterback ever at Ole Miss and the second player selected in the 1971 NFL draft. Archie went on to have himself quite a career, playing for the New Orleans Saints for 11 years, followed by a couple of years in both Houston and Minnesota. Yes, Arch Manning has strong bloodlines. I wouldn’t bet against him being a top NFL quarterback in a few years.
Fishing is in Victor Boucher’s blood. He comes by it naturally. And wow, does he catch some big fish! Victor caught, measured, and released a 46-inch monster striped bass on May 26. To put this fish in context, here’s what Rafael Osona posted on the Spring Sea Run Opener Facebook page: “Victor is always setting the bar high, but last night he landed a tournament record 46” striped bass. Additionally it may be the longest/largest beach-based striper landed in the last TWO DECADES.” Yikes! And believe me, Rafael would know, as he is one of the main cogs in the Nantucket beach fishing scene (and he caught a monster 45inch fish in 2020).
Of course Vic’s fishing accomplishments are more than just that one big fish.

As June settles into true summer, the flora of Nantucket really comes alive. The beach roses scent the air along the dunes, our yellow thistles open for pollinators, and the golden heathers carpet the moors. This past week, while enjoying the early summer splendor, another blossom caught my eye: small clusters of whitish-green, each flower only ¼-inch in size. The delicate five-petal flowers aren’t showy or brightly colored, but they are pleasant, gently draping in small clusters. These flowers, however, aren’t the kind to put in an arrangement or bouquet. These deadly beauties actually belong to the poison ivy plant.
Poison ivy, Toxicodendron radicans, is a native woody plant prevalent across Nantucket Island. The old adage “leaves of three, let it be” is a good thing to remember for identifying the plant. While other innocuous native plants have clusters of three leaves, it may be best to avoid all “leaves of three” if you’re not sure. Unlike some plants in the blackberry family with three leaves, poison ivy does not have thorns and generally has smooth leaf edges, though sometimes it is “variable toothed.” That basically means it does what it wants when it wants.
As the name implies, it is “toxic” or “poisonous” to the touch for many of the public—85% of people report they are allergic to poison ivy, but they are actually allergic to urushiol, the rash-causing oil produced by the plant. I am personally jealous of the other 15%. I am so allergic to it that I have learned to pay special attention to its habits—the various morphs it exhibits, habitat niches it likes to occupy, and its overall seasonality. One winter, when I thought I was free of it, I failed to wear gloves while digging up some invasive plants. I learned my lesson that “evil never sleeps.” Little did I know that the poison ivy roots lurked in the soil, too, and I ended up with very swollen fingers. Apparently, all parts of the continued on page 22

For 2025, the Nantucket Historical Association’s annual summer fundraiser celebrating the rich tradition of Nantucket lightship baskets has an added flavor: a bourbon tasting alongside the bubbly, craft cocktails, and light bites.
Formerly the annual Baskets & Bubbly is now Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon and will feature exciting new additions that honor both weavers and collectors. Collector Max Berry will be specially recognized for his outstanding support and dedication to preserving this iconic island craft. In addition, the event will also have an exclusive showcase of other distinguished basket collectors displaying their treasured pieces.
This year, the highly anticipated Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon auction features a curated selection of exceptional works from today’s most talented artisans—plus select collaborations with other skilled craftspeople. The auction started online this week at nha.org, featuring unique and stunning items, including an exquisite Nantucket Tree Top Angel woven by Janet Carreau with carvings by artisan Scott Marks, a Footed Nantucket Basket Bowl by Bill Sayle that will look gorgeous on any table, a Scrimshaw Ivory Pendant hand-etched by artist David Lazarus, a Whale Bone Scallop Shell Choker by Paul Johnson, a Nantucket Lightship Basket Champagne Bucket perfect for island parties. Follow on Instagram @basketsbubblesbourbon to see more auction items highlighted daily
The Nantucket lightship basket has a long history on our island. During the early 1800s, they were practical for storage and used as carrying baskets in homes, stores, and workshops. As the island transitioned to a tourist economy in the 1860s, the baskets became a popular keepsake of an island visit. The Nantucket Historical Association is committed to preserving the iconic Nantucket lightship basket craft by enhancing the permanent lightship basket collection, displaying exhibitions, and teaching children and adults the art form. The Nantucket Lightship Basket Fund at the NHA is used solely to carry out this mission and share the history of Nantucket Lightship baskets.
The 2025 Baskets, Bubbles, & Bourbon over 21 event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Friday, June 27 in the beautiful garden of the Hadwen House, 96 Main Street. Tickets are available now (while they last) at nha.org.

Egan Maritime Institute invites the public to attend the season’s first Foghorn Speaker Series event, Fishing for Food and Money, this Wednesday, June 25 from 5:30 to 7 pm in the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.
The evening will feature a panel discussion that expands on the themes explored in the Museum’s featured 2025 exhibit From Hard Times to Boom Times, which traces the transformation of Nantucket’s waterfront—developed as a working harbor supporting a robust whaling and fishing economy—to its present role as a vibrant, tourism-based hub.
While the exhibit highlights the broader economic and cultural shifts along the waterfront, our Foghorn Speaker Series dives deeper into the personal stories that bring this history to life.
Five panelists will speak of their history and expertise. Carl Sjolund is a longtime commercial fisherman with decades of experience navigating Nantucket’s waters and inspiring the next generation in the fishing industry. Ginger
Andrews, owner and restorer of the island’s last working scalloping shanty, preserving a vital piece of local history is well-versed about the past. Jeff Allen, artist and owner of FishStix, where he combines functional design, intricate artistry, and local knowledge to craft custom fishing rods, can address the current fishery. Tammy King, surfcasting instructor behind Fish Girl Guides, commercial scalloper, and an advocate who fosters a community of women fishers will add her perspective to the panel. And Corey Gammill, owner of Bill Fisher Tackle and Bill Fisher Outings, has a mission to keep Nantucket’s fishing culture alive—maintaining it as both a trusted source for gear and a hub for local knowledge, storytelling, and community.
Tobias Glidden, a descendant of Charles S. Glidden, a U.S. Life-Saving Surfman and founder of Nantucket’s first fish market, will moderate the panel discussion.
Together, the panelists will reflect on the changes they’ve witnessed, how they’ve adapted, and why they continue to work in the fishing industry despite its challenges.
“This discussion offers a unique window into the lived experiences behind an evolving industry,” said Egan Maritime’s Executive Director, Carlisle Jensen. “It honors the role of local stories in preserving the island’s waterfront history and maritime legacy.”
The panel is free for members. Non-members pay regular museum admission, ranging from $7 to $15. Visit eganmaritime.org for details and to register.
day of history and celebration,” said Dr. Noelle Trent, President & CEO of the Museum of African American History (MAAH).
“These events promise to be informative and engaging,” said Shantaw Bloise-Murphy, Director of Culture & Tourism for the Town of Nantucket. “As a community, we have the opportunity to acknowledge the journey and achievements of African Americans and come together in celebration. We look forward to a day of fun, learning, and civic engagement.”
Starting at 11 am, local musician Kezia Duarte will play the saxophone. From 11:30 am to 12:10 pm the documentary Nantucket's Historic Coloured Cemetery: Stories Told by Nantucketers will be screened. Following the documentary, SheShe Fogo will perform.
From noon till 3 pm, the block party will continue with food, games, arts and crafts, live music by Latulippe and E-Cliff and the Swing Dogs, and a marketplace.
This Juneteenth event is rain or shine. Due to very limited parking close to the African Meeting House at 29 York Street, participants may consider walking from downtown or taking the NRTA’s free mid-island bus that leaves from the Greenhound Building on Washington Street every 30 minutes.

He currently holds the record for the biggest striper caught in the Inshore Classic tournament with a 43½-inch bass. He’s won three big fish awards in tournaments. Victor modestly told me, “A lot of it was luck. A lot of variables came together for me.” Yes, Vic, perhaps there was some good fortune that helped you along the way but as the great golfer Gary Player once said, “The more I practice, the luckier I get.” Victor fishes hard.
“My dad Paul started me fishing the ponds as a wee child, catching slimy pickerel. Going out in his jon boat in the water tower pond—one of my favorite memories! I caught a big pickerel when I was 7 or 8, throwing a rooster tail (an old school freshwater fishing lure with feathers and a spinning blade). I’ve been throwing them forever!”
Young Victor was hooked! “I remember going out a couple nights puppy-dogging my dad up and down the beach. I didn’t catch a lot but he did and it was really cool. It lit the spark for me—out in the dark, the headlamps would come on and it looks like a plane landing.”
So how did Victor develop into such a dominant force in the fishing community? I asked Victor’s dad, Paul Boucher. He summed it up very quickly: “It’s easy. Genetics. Tracy’s family (Victor’s mom), the Reeds, are famous for catching big fish. The legacy of the Reed family fishing this harbor goes back more than 100 years!” Paul sent me two pictures of Barbara (Reith) Reed and her son Andy near the Brant Point rocks holding striped bass

Polpis Harbor. Designed to protect a vulnerable salt marsh from erosion, the reef is constructed from interlocking “oyster castles”: square blocks made of a calcium-rich concrete that young oysters readily attach to. “They’re like ecologist LEGOs,” said Karberg. “So you stack them on top of each other, and those carved-out areas on the top will interlock and create a stable structure.”
selves improve water quality and increase habitat biodiversity. Karberg said the reef is already helping the marsh grow and attracting more marine life such as fish and crabs.
Even better: the reef is built to adapt.
“If sea level continues to rise, those reefs will rise with it,” Harkins said. That’s good news for homeowners along Polpis Harbor, where flooding and shoreline erosion are growing concerns. With hard infrastructure like bulkheads increasingly difficult to permit, nature-based solutions like oyster reefs offer a promising alternative.
After installation, the Brant Point Hatchery provided seed oysters to populate this intertidal oyster reef. Since then, it has become self-sustaining, with oysters naturally growing and stacking on top of one another. The reef serves two purposes: the castle structure breaks up wave energy, reducing erosion and allowing the salt marsh to expand, while the oysters them-
“We’re really looking at applying shellfish to different types of restoration projects,” said Riley, who established the Brant Point Shellfish Hatchery in 2009. Today it is still one of the few municipal shellfish hatcheries in the country that focuses solely on enhancing and restoring local shellfish populations in town waters. Each season, the hatchery produces millions of bay scallop, oyster, and quahog larvae.
Beyond restoration, oysters have become a livelihood and a signature island flavor. The island is now home to five active oyster farms, though the industry’s roots here are relatively young.
It began in the early 1970s when President Richard Nixon signed the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), which funded publicservice job training across the country in an effort to counteract the nationwide economic recession. Nantucket locals proposed a soon-to-be budding aquaculture industry as a way to diversify the construction-heavy local economy. According to Egan Maritime Institute, Rob Garrison and Martin Ceeley secured Nantucket’s first oyster farm lease in 1983, planting the seed for what would become a cen-
tral piece of the island’s economic and cultural identity.
Today, the process starts at an off-island commercial hatchery, where adult oysters are induced to spawn in controlled tanks. The fertilized eggs grow into microscopic larvae, and once they reach about two millimeters in size—roughly the size of a pepper flake—they are sold to farms, where they will continue growing until they reach maturity about two years later.
“You get them spread into your bags and cages and, as they start to grow, it’ll take probably two years at least for a two millimeter seed to turn into a three inch adult oyster,” said Fitzgibbon, who also co-owns Hang Ten Raw Bar.
Nantucket farmers purchase the seed from hatcheries around New England, and that’s when their work begins.
After a couple of months, the oysters outgrow their initial bags and must be redistributed to give them room to grow. “They double or triple in size, so you need to separate them into more bags so they can keep growing efficiently,” said Emil Bender, owner of Pocomo Meadow Farm and the other half of the duo behind Hang Ten Raw Bar.
He learned the rhythm early on, working on his dad’s oyster farm in high school. “Every year when I came back from college for the summers I'd work for him, and then I would reinvest half my money that I made back into the farm, into buying oyster seed,” he explained. “And after four summers of doing that, I had invested so much time and thought into it, I came home and started doing that full time with my dad and trying to expand it.”
Farms use different techniques: bottom culture (on the seafloor) and off-bottom culture (in floating cages anchored to the bottom). Bender, who uses off-
bottom culture, says the constant tumbling from waves and wind produces a better-looking, more uniform oyster.
Despite the island’s small size, demand for Nantucket oysters is booming. “The vast majority of all the oysters farmed collectively on Nantucket are eaten on Nantucket,” said Fitzgibbon.
General Manager of Glidden’s Island Seafood, Jeffrey Long, agrees that demand is increasing: “I ordered 4,000 oysters yesterday, and I'm down to 1,200 today,” he said. He added that local oysters are what people come looking for. “I think people in particular want Nantucket oysters when they come here,” said Long. “That's the question we get with oysters: are these local?”
Fitzgibbon attributes the distinctive flavor of a Nantucket oyster to the island’s unique geographic position 30 miles out to sea. “We’re surrounded by the most pure, flowing, open ocean, Atlantic currents that you can imagine,” he explained. The result is a distinct merroir—the marine equivalent of terroir in wine —shaped by salinity, water temperature, vegetation, and farming methods. “We’re in full-strength seawater, right around 33 parts per thousand,” said Harkins. “They’re growing in deep water and harbor water a pretty good distance away from any freshwater input, so what you’re left with is this really briny, salty oyster.”
Matt Herr of Grey Lady Oyster said that Nantucket oysters, especially those raised at the surface, have a uniquely clean and crisp flavor. “That’s the cool thing about oysters—they take on the essence of where they’re growing,” said Bender, who operates the only shallow-water farm on Nantucket.
In addition to taste, Nantucket’s colder waters provide a health benefit that distinguishes its oysters

that clearly weigh in excess of 50 pounds. I’m guessing that the pictures were taken in the early 1970s. “My son Victor is named after Victor Reed Sr., his great grandfather. He was the caretaker for the Cox estate on Brant Point for years. Fishing was always a huge part of their lives. Things were different in the 50s, 60s and 70s—local people lived off the bounty of the island.”
I’ve done some work at the Cox estate. The Reed family is loved very much, as evidenced by a picture of Vic Reed Sr. that hangs in the kitchen. Vic Reed Jr. is now the caretaker for the estate. I called him and he and his wife Maureen were kind enough to share some time with me.
“My dad told us that he could smell the fish. He’d say that the bass were in when the wild cherry trees blossomed.” Yes, Vic Sr. knew when and where to be if you wanted to catch big striped bass. “He would tell us to not bother going out until the last half hour of the outgoing tide. And as for Great Point, you have to fish the tide change.”
Vic Jr., Maureen, and I went back in time for an hour at their kitchen table. We talked about what we remembered from the Nantucket that we grew up in. The Sandpiper restaurant—I thought it was on the corner of Main and Federal streets. Nope, it was down on Main Street, the second storefront from Federal. What about The Skipper? Yes, Henry Fee ran that down on Steamboat Wharf. Did they really have singing waiters and waitresses? Yup. The Opera House? Gwen Gaillard ran that and it was the place that movie stars would pop into, right? Yes it was.
“My dad had lobster traps all over. So did Maureen and me. We supplied the North Shore restaurant: Bob Ruley’s place. When my dad died, he wanted his ashes spread everywhere that he had set his lobster traps. We ran out of ashes before we ran out of places!”
Vic Jr. backed up Paul’s assessment about Nantucket folk living off of the island’s bounty. “By the time I was 12, I couldn’t eat another clam! I had developed some sort of seafood allergy. These days I can eat scallops, but that’s about it. We were always eating fish, deer, pheasant, rabbit. We lived on King Street in
‘Sconset. My dad would row off of Sankaty and fill a dory with fish. He’d go out with the outgoing tide and come back on the incoming. We would haul the fish off the beach and to the truck on sleds. My dad would blow this old foghorn that he had. That let the neighbors know that he had fresh fish. People would come running! He also sold fish on Main Street.”
Vic Jr. joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He admitted that his admiration for the Coast Guardsmen that he had met during his time as a kid helping out at the Cox estate (adjacent to the USCG base on Brant Point) was a big factor. “I was hoping to get stationed on the Coast Guard freighters in the Pacific. Instead, I got assigned to the Group Islands: Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket! I spent two years stationed in my own home town. Finally I got transferred to Point Judith, RI.”
“And that’s where he met me,” Maureen piped in. Vic agreed that she was the catch of a lifetime!
Vic and Maureen showed me some more absolutely amazing family photos. One that made my head spin had been taken by Larry Cronin. He had gone with Vic Sr. to First Point on Coatue for a fishing trip. Mr. Cronin’s note on the photo reads, “Vic and the bass. First Point, Late 80’s.” The picture shows Vic Sr. hooked onto a huge striper while two fish that I would reasonably estimate to be 50 plus pounds were stacked on the beach behind him. Wow. Just wow!
Another photo shows Vic Sr., Barbara and a very young Andy Reed each dragging similarly sized fish off the beach at Brant Point. We estimated that this picture was taken during the early 1970s.
So yes, Victor Boucher comes by it naturally. It’s definitely in his blood. And he’s keeping things going by taking his daughter Bailey, four years old, and his son, Benny, almost two, out fishing every chance that he can. “Bailey reeled in her own striper and will win a junior prize at the Spring Sea Run Opener awards. In a few weeks, we’re going to dig sand fleas at Great Point and use them for bait to try to catch stripers in the surf.” I bet that they do. It’s in their blood. It comes to them naturally. To paraphrase the great Hank Williams Jr., if Vic goes fishing all night long, it’s just a family tradition.
(Thanks to the Reed and Boucher families for the amazing pictures!)

from those farmed in warmer waters. “You have to worry about a lot of different types of illnesses down south because of the extended period of time that they're exposed to warm water,” said Riley, who grew up in Atlanta, Georgia.
On Sunday, June 8, Nantucket celebrated its fourth annual OysterFest. The event, hosted by the Nantucket Shellfish Association and Cisco Brewers, celebrates the island’s prized oysters and the people who farm them. This year, all five farms donated oysters for a special collaboration: a Nantucket Oyster Beer, brewed by Cisco’s lead brewer Silas Gilbert.
“This beer is a tribute to all the hard work Nantucket oyster farmers take on year-round during all seasons on this beautiful island we call home,” Nantucket Shellfish Association wrote in a recent Facebook post.
Among the 5 participating farms, a total of 11,000 oysters were shucked and slurped, according to Bender.
Riley said she would like to see more public events to introduce people to the importance of shellfish. “I would love to see some other events…to make that connection between the importance of water quality and a luxury seafood,” she said.
When looking to the future of aquaculture on Nantucket, Fitzgibbon sees opportunity not just for expanding the industry, but for deepening its connection to the environment. “I think it's one of the best things we could be doing, as far as producing a close-to-home food source, and at the same time treating our harbor more like a garden and taking care of it, instead of just relying on wild caught,” he said. “No one's growing clams. I would love to do that.”
Farming oysters on Nantucket comes with its challenges, too.
“It’s a labor of love,” said Herr. “There are a million ways to make more money on Nantucket than growing oysters.”
But when the labor pays off and a plump, shiny oyster raised from a tiny seed is served raw on the half shell, the reward is worth it. “If you put in the time and you create a product that you're proud of, people really seem to gravitate towards it,” said Herr. “And the fact that you can be in the environment that you thrive in is all the better.”
poison ivy plant can produce urushiol.
Poison ivy is a plant I love to hate and hate to love. Instead of continually cursing the plant for my allergy, I am working on my poison ivy appreciation, for this native plant is an important part of our native flora.
I marvel at its ability to morph into many plant forms. As a woody vine, it climbs and encircles trees, as can be seen along the edge of the Nantucket State Forest. It can appear herbaceous, growing among the low bush blueberries and wildflowers at the edge of paths. Each stem seems to know how tall to grow to mimic the surrounding plants. It can be shrubby in nature, growing in and among the bayberries and huckleberries and growing no more than hip height. Making sure to cover all of its bases, I have even seen poison ivy looking like a tree, though this has been exclusively in marshes.
While I hate to admit it, there are more reasons to admire this shape-shifter. In addition to being a master of disguise, poison ivy may be the super plant of the future. Researchers have found that poison ivy responds extremely well to elevated CO2 levels as predicted with future climate change. You think that would be the case for all plants with more CO2. However, poison ivy has been shown to be more adept at reacting quickly to excess CO2, growing 149 percent faster than poison ivy grown without elevated CO2. These elevated carbon dioxide levels are creating bigger, stronger poison ivy plants that produce more urushiol. The urushiol isn’t just more plentiful, it was also more potent. Great!
There has also been some research, though limited, on the phenology, or timing, of poison ivy leaf-out and flowering. In our region, poison ivy may be leafing out earlier, meaning that the poison ivy is around longer in the year, so there is more opportunity for exposure.
Poison ivy fruits are plentiful in late summer and early fall. Birds love the poison ivy berry, which is high in lipids, providing much needed fat calories for fall migration. These berries are also an important food source for other wildlife like white-tailed deer. Deer will even graze on the twigs and leaves. Lucky for them that deer, birds, and other Nantucket fauna (including dogs) are not allergic
And if all of this wasn’t enough, poison ivy can be really useful for restoration projects and can be considered a nature-based tool for erosion control. It is considered an early successional plant, meaning it often grows in disturbed areas and can help stabilize soil and provide cover for other plants to establish. It thrives in disturbed landscapes, places where not many things will grow. You can see it near beaches, which are constantly getting beaten by coastal storms. You’ll see it along roadsides or abandoned lots, which are disturbed by other forces. In a few of our restoration spots at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, poison ivy was the first native plant to colonize a disturbed site after removing non-native invasive species. Removing my own bias, this plant is considered a success given the other ecosystem services it provides.
It’s hard for me not to admire a plant like Poison Ivy, even if we have a lovehate relationship. It can seemingly shape-shift to blend in with its surroundings in a way that other plants cannot. It has the ability to colonize disturbed areas and be a pioneer species stabilizing soil and re-vegetating barren areas. And it is one of the few plants that can capitalize on the mess we’ve made with climate change. Poison Ivy can grow earlier, bigger, taller, and stronger in light of elevated CO2 and increased temperatures. So, if we’re mad about it, it’s our own fault.
We’ve created a monster.

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
