a letter from Dr. Vinson

Welcome Back!

It’s that time again, when our kiddos trade swimsuits for school clothes and prepare to learn, the Wylie Way! Fine arts, athletics, JROTC and many other groups have already reported, and words cannot describe the joy we feel to see them back to school in what could be the most “normal” environment since February of 2020. Wylie ISD is prepared to welcome everyone back with new classrooms, desks, chairs and buses. As construction wraps up on seven different campuses, more than 150 new staff members are being introduced to the Wylie Way and teachers are busy setting up their classrooms. Our attention to health and safety also remains a priority, and we are ready to safely receive our students. Kids love memes, and I believe the one below accurately describes Wylie ISD’s current status. Our health and safety protocols will be continuously evaluated with data from state, county and local agencies to guide our pathway back to school. The biggest reason for our success last year was

great communication and collaboration between our families and the schools. This is our school, and keeping our kids healthy and safe is most effective when this partnership between school and home thrives! As with the We cannot wait start of any new school year, to get this school especially one year started and where there help each other are so many new families, thrive, the Wylie we know how Way! important it is to provide simple reminders of how everything is supposed to work. That is why we have created a backto-school guide to answer your most frequently asked questions. This guide also highlights changes, schedules, and who to call for support and guidance as the new school year approaches. Welcome back, we cannot wait to get this school year started and help each other thrive, the Wylie Way!

portation

Wylie ISD is proud to offer quality transportation for our community. Bus routes went live Aug. 1 on www.wylieisd.net/busroutes. Check routes and schedules as they may have changed from last year.

Here Comes the Bus app Here Comes the Bus is an easy-to-use website and mobile device app that enables parents to view the real-time location of their child’s school bus on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Email alerts and push notifications help parents send their students to the bus stop at just the right time. This application can be viewed on any smartphone by entering the student’s ID and an account number provided by the school district.

OL BUS

Getting started is easy! Visit the Here Comes the Bus website and use the Wylie ISD District Code: 29273. Attendance At-A-Glance Below you will find a quick overview of the School Attendance/ Absence Policies, but it is highly recommended that parents review the Student Handbook located on the website. The district’s Attendance Policy can be found starting on page 35 of the Student Handbook. 1. When a student returns from an absence, the student must bring a parent signed note to the attendance office that describes the reason for the absence or the parent may enter the reason for the absence in Skyward Parent Access. After three school days, the absence will be considered unexcused if a note has not been received by the school office. 2. If your child leaves during the day for a doctor or dentist appointment, a doctor’s note must be submitted to the school attendance office within three days of the absence in order for the absence on the day of the appointment to be considered “medical.”

After three school days, the absence will be considered unexcused if a note has not been received by the school office.

3. If a student is absent for more than five consecutive days because of a personal illness, upon return to school the student must bring a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school.

P lease excuse David from school yesterday. He was at a dr.’s appointment.

4. Should the student develop a questionable pattern of absences, the principal or attendance committee may require a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s absence from school to determine whether the absence or absences will be excused or unexcused. Attendance notes are processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted. As a courtesy, a parent may receive an automated phone call from the district in regard to the absence on the day of the absence.

2021-2022 Back-to-School Guide |13

Student ID Grades 6-12

For families with students in grades 6-12, student IDs will look a little different this school year. Senate Bill 279 requires school districts to print the contact information for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Crisis Text Line and allows school districts to print the contact information for a local suicide prevention hotline, on all student ID cards for students in grades six and higher. Our student ID programming has been updated to include this information.

Connect to PTA

Wylie ISD Council of PTAs will have information to join PTA at Backto-School events. For more information, contact Council President, Monica Munoz at president@ptawyliecouncil.com. Wylie ISD PTAs are excited to start a new and exciting year. The new membership year starts Aug. 1. They look forward to continuing to give each Wylie ISD student a voice in Austin and within the local community. The only way to do that is with your support! PTA is not an exclusive club defined by any one person. PTA members are a vibrant group of people from all walks of life, representing the diversity within the Wylie community. You can PTA because everyone can PTA! We can’t wait to see you, and help make the 2021-2022 school year the best.

Family Resource Center

Joley Martin, District Family Liaison, works to connect families with a variety of community resources to meet their needs. For more information, contact Joley at joley.martin@wylieisd.net or call 972-4292996. Wylie Way Outfitters Standardized dress reduces the gap between the families who can afford more expensive clothes and families who struggle to make ends meet. Some families have difficulty providing these essentials. To help, the Wylie ISD District PTA established Wylie Way Outfitters as a way to dress every student who needs clothes to start the new year. Wylie Way Outfitters’ goal is that every student is dressed to impress the first day of school. Families, if you have a need, please let your campus counselor know.

Volunteering and Pre-check Wylie ISD is committed to providing a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors. If you plan to participate as a volunteer or to obtain a pre-check ID, please click here to complete an online volunteer background check.

Pre-Check Information In Wylie ISD, it’s important to us that parents and families join their students for special school programs and celebrations. To help manage the large number of parents who attend school events during the day, Wylie ISD has implemented a TSA-style pre-screen system. Our goal is to reduce lines and wait times on these days. Wylie ISD Pre-Check ID cards are available for parents of students at all grade levels. For more information, please click here.

Guidance & Counseling Services Students and families face a variety of stressors and unforeseen circumstances every day. Maybe your family will never be in need of one of these resources, but it is possible a friend might be. The Wylie ISD Guidance and Counseling Department is available for you. Click here for additional resources.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions (CASEL 2019). Wylie ISD’s commitment to excellence does not just begin and end in academic success for all students. As a district, we will foster social and emotional health that builds positive relationships and encourages responsible decision-making.

Chromebook Program Wylie ISD will continue its 1:1 Chromebook take home program for the 2021-22 school year. Each student in grades 5-12 at the intermediate, junior high and high school campuses will receive a Chromebook to be used both at school and at home for the entire school year. At the completion of the school year, students will turn in their Chromebook where they will be cleaned, updated and checked for necessary repairs. At the high schools, students will receive the same Chromebook from year to year. For additional information, please click here. Chromebook Helpful Resources
