a letter from Dr. David Vinson As a struggling math student about to give up, I was encouraged by the magic of four words from a teacher, “I believe in you!” Don’t get me wrong, my challenge with Algebra continued, but with someone in my corner to encourage me, my heart filled with hope and optimism. These past few years have provided many tests to our belief in ourselves and each other. I am so proud of our Wylie ISD family for facing every challenge with the same hope and optimism that encouraged me to believe that tomorrow can be better than today. Wylie ISD is a premier school district among Texas and national academic elite based on every student performance measurement. As one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas, hundreds of new families join ours every year, seeking the exceptional and values-driven educational experience we provide students. In a recent student poll of

grades 5-12 students, 94% expressed that their teacher cares about them as a person. Statistics like these are evidence of our belief in ourselves and each other. We believe in our Wylie ISD family and realize that together, the brightest days are ahead. New and returning families – welcome to the 2022-23 school year! This year will be the best in our history. Why? Because we believe, the Wylie Way! Follow Me: My NEW Facebook Page: David Vinson, Ph.D. Superintendent - Wylie ISD Kid Brag Page Instagram: @vinsonraiders

Wylie ISD is proud to offer quality transportation for our community. Bus routes will go live Aug. 1 on wylieisd. net/busroutes. Families are encouraged to check their routes and schedules as they may have changed from the previous year.

Find important information here regarding bus transportation in Wylie ISD. For any questions, please contact the Transportation Department at 972-429-2300. All elementary students will receive colored wrist bands that match their bus routes. Students in K-2 are required to have a parent, guardian or older sibling at the stop to take them home. If a parent or guardian feels their child can walk home unattended, they must send an email stating they give permission. This note will be attached to the child’s route. In the event there is no parent, guardian or older sibling at the stop and no note is attached to the student’s information, the child is returned to the campus.

HERE COMES THE BUS APP: Here Comes the Bus is an easy-to-use website and mobile device app that enables parents to view the real-time location of their child’s school bus on a computer, tablet or smartphone. Email alerts and push notifications help parents send their students to the bus stop at just the right time. This application can be viewed on any smartphone by entering the student’s ID and an account number provided by the school district. Getting started is easy! Visit the Here Comes the Bus website and use the Wylie ISD District Code: 29273. Create your parent account using the same email address that is in Skyward Family Access and you are done. Your bus-riding students will automatically be associated with your account so you can track their bus.

INELIGIBLE BUS ZONES Students who live within two miles of their designated campuses are not eligible for transportation. See below for neighborhoods that may be affected. DISTRICT TRANSFERS For information regarding district transfer guidelines and policies, visit wylieisd.net/ transfers.

ATTENDANCE AT-A-GLANCE Below you will find a quick overview of the Wylie ISD School Attendance/Absence Policies, but it is highly recommended that parents review the Student Handbook located on the Wylie ISD website. The district’s Attendance Policy can be found in the Student Handbook. 1. When a student returns from an absence, the student must bring a parent signed note to the attendance office that describes the reason for the absence or the parent may enter the reason for the absence in Skyward Family Access. After three school days, the absence will be considered unexcused if a note has not been received by the school office. 2. If your child leaves during the day for a doctor or dentist appointment, a doctor’s note must be submitted to the school attendance office within three days of the absence in order for the absence on the day of the appointment to be considered “medical.” 3. If a student is absent for more than five (5) consecutive days because of a personal illness, upon return to school the student must bring a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school. 4. Should the student develop a questionable pattern of absences, the principal or attendance committee may require a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s absence from school in order to determine whether the absence or absences will be excused or unexcused. Attendance notes are processed as quickly as possible after they are submitted. As a courtesy, a parent may receive an automated phone call from the district in regard to the absence on the day of the absence.

2022-23 Back-to-School Guide |17

PROMOTION & RETENTION A student will be promoted only on the basis of academic achievement or demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter of the course or grade level, the recommendation of the student’s teacher, and the score received on any criterion-referenced or state-mandated assessment.

KINDERGARTEN-GRADE 3 A parent may request in writing that a student repeat kindergarten, or grade 1, 2, or 3. Before granting the request, the campus will convene a retention committee to meet and discuss the request, and will invite the parent to participate.

Failure to Perform Satisfactorily on STAAR Reading or Math If a student in grades 3-8 does not perform satisfactorily on the state assessment, the campus will provide accelerated instruction for a student, designed by the accelerated learning committee (ALC). The district will document the educational plan in writing and provide a copy to the student’s parents. Parents may request that the campus consider assigning the student to a particular classroom teacher in the applicable subject area, if more than one classroom teacher is available.
