WORKING MAMA 8Article -

As women we know the cliché saying “ as women we wear so many caps ” , we wear the wife cap, the career cap, the supporter cap, the mother cap with so many more caps as individuals, but very few of us remember to wear the cap of selflove in the form of body and beauty

Let’s jump into hygiene tips, let us not judge with so many caps it is easy to miss out on a few things:

Now that you ’ ve done some introspection, let’s jump into my first ever beauty article for working mamas, and like with any other work of art we require a clean canvas : ) This month we jump into the beauty of hygiene as we hear our mothers say “Bo blink onder stink”, if you are not familiar with this Afrikaans term it’s basically a term used when someone is always ready to shine but technically didn’t really take a bath.

With Women having a natural instinct of caring for all those they love; we forget the need to feel good about ourselves Let’s be honest as a mother this instinct doubles no triples and we forget that our kids look up to us too. As working moms, we put food on the table financially and literally, we put clothing on their backs and think that is all they require With that said I would like to introduce you to two myths. Firstly, the myth that girls end up like their mothers and myth two, boys choose partners like their mothers Being very deliberate I want you to think, do I want my daughter to end up like me and do I want my son to end up with someone like me? Now that you have thought about all your characteristics, your morals, etc , I want you to think do I want to be a representation in terms of hygiene, dress code and how I represent myself physically? Tough one hay.

Is your beauty one of your caps?

is typically celebrated by South Africans with a cookout known as a braai. Some call it Shisa Nyama or Ukosa, while others call it a braai, but no matter the occasion, nothing can outdo gathering around a fire to cook a meal. Numerous celebrations are organized all around the nation, and some people dress in traditional clothing.

History of Heritage Day

All communities are built on their living heritage, which serves as a vital source of identity and continuity. Cultural tradition, oral history, performance, ritual, skills, indigenous knowledge system, and a holistic view of nature, society, and interpersonal interactions are all examples of aspects of living legacy.

Travel Canvas. 2021. What is Heritage Day and Why Do We Celebrate It. Available at: https://africantravelcanvas.com (Accessed 19 September 2022)

Although there was a media effort to get the event designated as National Braai Day in 2005 to honour the custom of having barbecues in the backyard, Heritage Day is still the name given to the occasion.

Shaka Day, a day set aside to honour the Zulu King of Shaka, was previously known as the 24th of September in South Africa. He was credited with creating the Zulu nation by bringing the Zulu tribe together. South Africans would visit his grave annually to pay tribute to him. A request to reaffirm the day as a legal holiday was turned down in 1995. The majority Zulu party Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) objected, but it was ultimately decided that the day was necessary and would be named “Heritage Day.”

When they grew up in an atmosphere where direct communication of emotions and being assertive is frowned upon, they found it difficult to voice opinions directly. They become conditioned to feel they must always be agreeable to be accepted.

But they were not; you know they were not.

Passive aggression is a pattern of indirectly expressing negative feelings and hostility through sarcasm and resentment. There’s a disconnect between what such people say and do. It is a behavioral illusion and can affect any relationships, reduce healthy social interaction, and hamper performance in the workplace. If you’re struggling with passive-aggressive behavior - or you think your loved one is — try to find out why it happens and how to deal with them.

1. Help them recognize their feelings. First, bring attention to whatever they said in the wrong way. You may ask, ‘Can you repeat what you just said? Did I hear you correctly? It will challenge them nicely to re-notice their words and actions. But make sure to be within your boundary. The point isn’t to make them feel guilty but to give them a chance to understand their feelings.

If you face such behavior in your close circle, you need to do the following:

Psychologist Holly Richmond, in her book Reclaiming Pleasure, explains that such behavior can stem from childhood teachings to please others and avoid conflict. Thus, they use nicely presented words while being subversive in order to get what they want.

3. Encourage them to be more open Open and mutual discussion about their feelings helps them to reassess their needs. You can say, ‘It’s confusing dear when you tell me you are fine, but your face looks angry. It makes me uncomfortable when I don’t know how you’re feeling or what you need.’

Communicating indirectly, giving the silent treatment, and stubborn look to unnerve others.

The bottom line is –It’s frustrating to be on the receiving end of passive aggression. End of the day, healthy relationships (romantic or not) are all about open and honest communication. When passive aggression occurs- don’t be ashamed to call upon professional help. And if it persists with no sign of improvement, they’re probably not someone you can handle in your life.

Kash Parker FinancialFitnessForWomen

Questions we asked a Mom Entrepreneur

Kash Parker is the Founder and CEO of Financial Fitness for Women (Pty) Ltd an online financial empowerment membership and platform for women, the first of its kind in South Africa. The vision is to educate women about personal finance, how to form healthy relationships with money and build generational wealth. The membership provides resources for both entrepreneurs and career women. The element of community and accountability is what makes this membership particularly impactful – as the subject of money is still somewhat taboo and can make one feel isolated. With 14 years of experience within the private banking industry and personally having been through exceptionally tough financial times, Kash has a story behind the brand, which women find very relatable. Kash is a firm advocate of diversity and inclusion, especially for women of color in South Africa. She is a firm believer in the power of positive thinking and attracting abundance and continuously serves her audience with impactful and powerful money management strategies to empower women to build generational wealth and break generational financial curses.

What is your biggest strength when it comes to running your business?

Saying no to having a steady income in the form of a 9-5 job, and going all in with my business! I am trusting the process.

I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart. Starting up businesses and side hustles while holding down a 9-5 job. I battled to find my true calling for many years. I have a financial services background and experienced financial difficulties due to a divorce and bad money habits. I wanted to tell my story of how I started over and rebuilt my life. My passion is teaching women how to not make the same mistakes I did, to value themselves, start a business and side hustle to build financial freedom, and break generational curses. I love seeing other women win!

What(Mompreneur)doyoudo, and why did you choose it?

Women are doing it all!

Dividing my time so that all areas of my life are nourished and cared for. Work-life balance is key.

I try to include my daughter in my business as far as possible. She sits in on Zoom meetings and attends events when it’s okay to do so. I want her to know that Financial Fitness for Women is a part of who I am as a woman. I am more than just a mother.

It’s okay to rewrite your money story. We are all worthy and capable of abundance.

How do you balance motherhood and business?

What is your biggest growth point when it comes to running your business?

As a business owner and mom, what are the challenges you face?

I am an empath and can connect with people on an authentic level.

It is becoming more common for women to launch exciting new businesses - and to juggle the demands of being entrepreneurs and their equally demanding roles as mothers. The fact that women, and especially moms like Kash Parker, are hardwired to multitask is no surprise.

WORKING MAMA 18Article -

So, one day work got “boring” again, and I started questioning myself - “Do I want to carry on living in this rat race?”

My happiness: “Once I reach the success I want in my career, I will take care of everything else and be happy.” My happiness was always in the future and based on achieving “success” in my career first.

I have! All my life.

I had a fierce drive to prove what I could do, even in an industry dominated by men, and I succeeded.

I left my corporate job to start my own business (something I’d never imagined I could do!). I met and married my life and business partner. I moved to sunny Cape Town, where I can enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. All of this happened in less than a year!

What did this cost me?

My relationships. We cannot be more connected to other people than we’re to ourselves, and I felt disconnected from myself. I always felt my emotions got in the way of being focused and achieving my goals. I was terrified of emotional intimacy and vulnerability.

Have you ever told yourself, “I will be happy when...”?

As a high-achiever, my greatest pleasure came from my career and accomplishments, so all I did was work and study.

My health. When life got busy, self-care was the first thing I dropped. Unlike my successful career, my personal life didn’t bring me any recognition or awards.

It is a significant barrier to entry for women with less access to capital and fewer assets than men. It can be difficult for women to get a loan to start a business. Most women don’t have collateral to stand as surety in the finance application. It means that even when female entrepreneurs come up with great business plans, excellent credit records, and even impressive cash flow, they are still hindered by a process that favors their male counterparts.

Challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in South Africa.

The corporate space in South Africa is mainly dominated by men means women have fewer advantages. The biggest challenge for women entrepreneurs is to get their voices heard and their capabilities taken seriously. If you look at the start-up ecosystem today, the member of funded start-ups with women founders is still lower than that of men.

By Florian Ferris

These are the main challenges we face as female entrepreneurs:

Many women in South Africa are uneducated and unskilled. Because of this operating a business is a challenge that is unlikely to be overcome anytime soon. Women should source for empowerment programs that offer training in various areas, helping women to educate and empower themselves.

1. Lack of access to finance

There is a strong belief and expectation that the woman will be the parent who raises the children while the man works. Women, in general, are more afraid of failure than men, and we tend to overthink every situation and think of the worst that could happen. In most cases, women lack confidence. Confidence and mindset are imperative in business. The more self-belief and resilience you have, the more confidence you will feel to stand up to societal biases and move beyond them.

2. Gender discrimination

September Issue 19Article -

3. Lack of training and education

-Have a clear business plan

-Keep your eyes firmly on your finance

5. Lack of role models and mentorship

WORKING MAMA 20Article -

-Invest in other women when you’re able to do so

4. Networking

Female entrepreneurs can make it. All we need to do is focus on our dreams, have perseverance, focus on the positive, and learn from our failures instead of giving up.

It is more difficult for a woman to build her network in male-dominated communities. However, there is a rise in networks in South Africa for women to find role models and support through connections and organizations. Find the ones that best fit your goals and start networking.

For female entrepreneurs to be successful in any society, they must have access to quality mentorship. Women entrepreneurs usually lack the level of moral support that they need to prevent their businesses from failing under the weight of challenges.

Here is a bit of encouragement from successful female entrepreneurs.

- and lastly, DREAM BIG.

-Open the door yourself, meaning you don’t wait for an invitation to participate

Here I am, just over a year later, standing STRONG with all the hope and faith that this brand will be successful.

View Cleopatra’s birthplace in Alexandria on a day or 2-night visit. Let me take you back to The Jewel of the Nile, a movie by Katherine Turner and Michael Douglas. Cruise the Nile on a 3, 5, or 7-night from Luxor to Aswan or Luxor back to Luxor. Moms, you and your children will enjoy all the meals onboard and a hot air balloon (depending on itinerary) to book. Enjoy a Nile view room and take a dip in the pool onboard the floating vessel in the afternoon after enjoying an excursion to Abu Simbel for the day. Have a refreshing cold juice onboard. There are many tourist sites on a Nile cruise; Karnak Temple, Souq of Luxor, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Kom Ombo, etc.

End your Egyptian Odyssey with a five-night stay or more in Sharm El Sheikh. The kids will enjoy snorkeling straight from the beach while you relax on your beach lounger. Participate in a half a day All Terrain Vehicle Safari tour. Visit the famous Blue Hotel and snorkel in the National Park, plus lunch is served on this tour. For the rest of your stay at the resort, play tennis with the kids, volleyball, and badminton. There are kids’ clubs at selected resorts in Sharm El Sheikh. Mamma, do not forget about a 2-hour relaxing massage. Now is your time to do it. What about Dad? Well, Mom and Dad can dive or laze around the pool. There is no rush- you have time. Mamas hire a babysitter for younger kids and explore Sharm El Sheikh at night, where the shopping continues and Nightlife. We recommend a minimum of 12 to 15 nights in Egypt, a combination of the city of Cairo, cruising The Nile, and then relaxing in the Red Sea. The Red Sea has some of the best diving and snorkeling spots.

There are many other areas in Egypt to traverse. We will keep that for next time. Plan your vacation in advance and save. Travel to Egypt! nights

An easy-to-reach country, with direct overnight flights from Or Tambo. Spend at least three nights in Cairo, enjoy a full-day tour, visit the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, and enjoy a camel ride. Shop till your legs can’t anymore, Egyptian cotton clothes and sheets, suits that tailors can sew in a day, bags, clothes dates, etc. At night, enjoy a sound and light show near the Pyramids. Remember, our ZAR stretches far.

Wellness - Your most important investment against year-end fatigue!

There are just a few months until the end of the year, and I want to ask you one thing.

I committed to exercising a few times a week (walking; stretching - movement is exercise).

When you purchase a vehicle, you insure it; and service it at intervals. When it requires fuel, you make sure to fuel up, and when that engine light comes on, you take your vehicle in for an assessment and have it repaired. You can drive the vehicle for many years with minimal issues when you maintain it well.

I have been on a journey over the past year that has taught me one thing. Invest in yourselfyour wellness, self-care, introspection, fueling your mind, body, and spirit to become the best version of yourself.

I recently joined another MLM, leaders in glyconutritional technology, and I can see how this technology will be in demand in time to come. We are simply not getting better; we are always sick, always taking medications to manage our symptoms when we should be investing in fixing the cause.

For those who have followed my journey, you will know that I started using essential oils and building my business around the usage of essential oils to assist in managing health and wellness and your emotional well-being. The new acquisition is one I am excited about, and here is why.

I have invested in only focusing on what I CAN control (emotional well-being), and I will share this with you all.

Contact me at angela@angoils.co.za or WhatsApp 072 746 7832 and let me help you on your journey to optimal health. www.angoils.co.za

Your body is your vehicle - you travel everywhere with it; it is in daily use, yet we skimp on the ‘maintenance’ we need. When our check-engine lights come on, we keep going in the hopes that the light will go away, and then we break down, and our cost to repair is phenomenal and sometimes catastrophic.

I invested in using essential oils as a less toxic alternative to treating everyday ailments (like sinus, exhaustion, mental fatigue, hygiene, and pain).

What have you done this year to invest in your WELLNESS?

I have invested in fueling my body with the nutrients it needs to stay alert and heal from the inside.

What have I done this year to invest in my wellness?

I hope you will see the value- in doing something different before the year-end hits. It is never too late to start- start small.

How has writing this book changed your life?

The modern Indian couple stands on an interesting cusp of two worlds. Even as their roots lie in our longstanding culture’s ancient wisdom and traditions, they are simultaneously embracing the future of modern living. In the book Row, Row Your Boat, Couple Therapists, and Marriage Mentors Sophia Philips and Roopak Nedumpilly speak of their journey as a couple navigating these dual worlds and share the insights they have gathered along the route. Early in their marriage, they realized their relationship was like a boat- sailing through turbulent waters and sometimes through gentle, calm waves. In each of these varied moments, it was by paying attention to the little things and the details that they rediscovered each other and grew together to navigate the oceans. Through their lively and refreshingly honest anecdotes of marital fiascos and repair attempts, they take the modern Indian on a selfreflective journey. It makes the reader examine their marriage and helps them row better – together.

What inspired you to write this book? The seed of writing this book, was planted when two of our mentors, Prof. Sunil Handa (IIM- A) and Prof. Suresh Bhagavatula (IIM-B), insisted that we compile our journey and the insights we have gathered along the way – our ‘woe to wow’ story. We are grateful to them for nudging us to go beyond our comfort zone.
