She Minds Her Own Business: The Guide to Designing a Life and Business You Love

The Dual Delight of Balancing & Finding Happiness in Two Careers

Being a single mom of twins and running my own business is a full-time job - I've been doing this for a living. For the last couple of years, I have been on a journey to feel at peace with my daily actions, wanting to be genuinely happy at work. Initially, starting in Marketing/PR, I transitioned to interior decorating, founding 'Pigs Can Fly Interiors' in 2008 after leaving my corporate job.

Flashback to 2021, unexpectedly rebuilding my interior decorating business after the pandemic, I realised combining my PR background with my current business could be advantageous. It led to the resurrection of my PR consultancy, VocalCord, allowing me to blend my creative and strategic skills.

According to a Harvard Business Review study, pursuing two careers can be more fulfilling, offering opportunities for skill acquisition and network expansion. It resonated with my experience of merging interior decorating and PR, creating synergies between diverse fields.

Transitioning into discussing the importance of a happy work environment; research highlights the significant role our homes play in overall happiness. The World Happiness Report emphasises the correlation between home satisfaction and life contentment. Moreover, the GoodHome Report underscores the impact of home improvements on happiness levels, challenging the notion that larger homes equate to greater happiness.

Renovating kitchens and bathrooms emerged as a key factor influencing happiness, suggesting that optimising living spaces can significantly enhance well-being. Despite common misconceptions, the size of the home is less critical than the organisation and perception of space.

Incorporating insights from my experiences, such as noticing increased snacking when working from home, adds a personal touch to the discussion. By sharing statistics from the GoodHome study, I highlight the tangible benefits of home renovations in fostering happiness.

Closing with a call to action, I encourage readers to pursue happiness by embracing multiple careers and creating environments they can take pride in. Quoting the late Iris Apfel, "More is more and less is a... bore," I urge individuals to seek fulfillment through diverse career paths and enriching living spaces.

In summary, my journey as a single mom entrepreneur navigating multiple careers underscores the importance of finding happiness at work and home. By integrating diverse skill sets and prioritising home satisfaction, I've discovered a formula for personal and professional fulfillment. It's not just about chasing success; it's about creating a life filled with joy and contentment.

Blossoming Roots: Varity Oliphant's Afro Street Fashion Revolution

08 WMM | Apr/Jun 2024
Fashion

In the diverse city of Johannesburg, a visionary in fashion, Varity Oliphant, challenges norms and creates a unique Afro Street style. As a single woman from Soweto, she has left a mark on the fashion industry. We explore Varity's story, her background, her design philosophy, and the challenges and successes that define her brand.

Varity draws inspiration from her grandmother (whose gift of fashion she inherited), and fashion icon, Olivier Rousteing, the head designer at the House of Balmain. Designing Afro Street fashion, she infuses her creations with African prints and unconventional shapes. Setting her apart from the rest is her careful use of fabric and how each silhouette accentuates individual body types, creating an exceptional blend that reflects her familial roots.

“I love nature, so I would always use those elements in my designs” expresses Varity passionately. Her love for flowers and their colours becomes a muse. From choosing fabrics that match the hues of petals to structuring the shape of the flower into a garment, she brings the vibrancy of nature into her designs, creating a style that feels alive and authentic.

OnememorablemomentinVarity’sjourney occurred when a hand-sewn garment, she made seven years ago, launched her business. A friend, also a model, loved the piece and wore it in an African-themed pageant category, winning Model of the Year.Thismomentbecameapivotalpointin her life.

In today's fashion industry, Varity faces the challenge of South Africans leaning toward Western expectations, pressurising local designers to meet those standards. Unfortunately, local designers, including Varity, often don’t receive enough appreciation for their hard work and creativity. Instead, customers expect local designers to lower their prices, not realising the effort put into crafting distinctive and high-quality designs.

Despite these challenges, Varity has a portfolio filled with achievements. She’s won awards, collaborated with modelling agencies and achieved success at major events. Winning the Best Designer at Mzanzi Fashion Week Spring Collection, earned her a spot on prestigious stages, such as the Walk of Elegance fashion show. Regardless of all the obstacles, this remains one of her proudest moments to date.

Staying motivated in the demanding and fast-paced fashion industry is no challenge for Varity. She keenly embraces the saying, "When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life." With a genuine love for her craft, she considers researching, reading, and constantly seeking ways to improve herself and her business.

Varity'sfutureobjectivesforherfashion brand are ambitious. Her goal is to establish a design manufacturing hub that will outlast her, paving the way to supply products to major retail outlets nationally and internationally.

To aspiring fashion designers, Varity shares valuable advice: "Be consistent with your designs; it might not come when you want, but only the consistent wins." These insights reflect Varity's unwavering dedication to her craft, portraying a fusion of genuine passion, continuous improvement, and ambitious goals for the future.

The Nehanda Nyakasikana Collection

10 WMM | Apr/Jun 2024
Fashion
Celebrating Strength & Beauty:

Fashion designer Beatrice Negonde created the latest collection, Nehanda Nyakasikana, in honour of African Warrior Princess Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana. While Nehanda Charwe Nyakasikana may not have held the title of Princess through royal lineage, her legacy remains one of Zimbabwe's most powerful and influential historical figures.

Her remarkable courage and resilience in confronting adversaries armed with guns and cannons while armed with only a spear served as the primary inspiration behind the creation of this collection in her honour. Beatrice researched the era's clothing, colours, and fabrics to blend history with modern designs.

The hallmark of the Nehanda Nyakasikana collection lies in its asymmetrical designs, a deliberate embrace of women's uniqueness. Negonde's choice of unconventional colours and patterns adds a refreshing twist to each piece, drawing inspiration from historical events, medieval fashion, and even contemporary artists like Shania Twain. This eclectic mix of influences results in garments that defy conventional norms and celebrate individuality.

Crafting each piece in the collection involves a carefulselectionoffabricsandcoloursthatreflect empowerment.Everyelement, fromboldprintsto vibrant hues, is chosen to remind women of their inherent strength and beauty, irrespective of societal standards or expectations.

Throughout the development process, Negonde encountered various challenges, such as researching the stories of African warrior women. However, these hurdles only enriched the collection's narrative, adding depth and authenticity to each garment. Despite the challenges, Negonde remains committed to stayingtruetoherstylewhileexploringnewideas, ensuring that the collection remains innovative and rooted in her artistic vision.

At its core, the Nehanda Nyakasikana collection embodies a message of resilience and selfacceptance. By highlighting the struggles and imperfections faced by women, Negonde aims to inspire others to overcome obstacles and embrace their uniqueness. Collaborating closely with her team, Negonde brings this vision to life, infusing each piece with meaning and purpose.

Looking towards the future, Negonde hopes to see fashion continue evolving, celebrating diversity, and empowering women from all walks oflife.Throughherdesigns, sheseekstochallenge societal norms and inspire self-love for generations, leaving a lasting impact on the fashion industry and beyond.

Clear skin = clear mind: Tackling teenage skin

Adolescence is a time of tremendous growth, selfdiscovery, and, often, some skin-related challenges. “Teenage skin is unique and dynamic, withdistinctcharacteristicsthatrequirespecialisedcare. Plus, the pressure of academics, particularly exam stress, can significantly impact the health and appearance of teenage skin,” explains Ruan Winter, marketing manager for local skincare brand Vitaderm. Here are the ins and outs of teenage skin, the best solutions, and products as well as the effect of stress on the skin.

Teenage skin is different from adult skin in several ways: Hormonal changes – Adolescence triggers a surge in hormones, which can lead to increased sebum (oil) production. This often results in acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Sensitivity and changing – Teenage skin can be both sensitive and ever-changing. It may be prone to redness, dryness, or even flakiness.

Healing and resilience –While teenage skin is more susceptible to damage and inflammation, it also has the remarkable ability to heal and regenerate quickly.

The stress associated with exams can take a toll on both the physical and emotional well-being of teenagers, including their skin. Here's how exam stress can affect the skin:

Hormonal fluctuations – Stress triggers the release of cortisol, a hormone that can stimulate oil glands, leading to increased oil production. This can result in breakouts and acne.

Reduced skincare routine – In times of stress, teenagers may neglect their skincare routine, which can exacerbate existing skin issues or lead to new ones.

Unhealthy lifestyle choices – Stress can lead to unhealthy habits, including poor dietary choices and inadequate sleep. These factors can further contribute to skin problems.

Best solutions & products for skin:teenage

Gentle cleansing

Use a mild, sulphate-free cleanser to remove excess oil and impurities like Vitaderm’s Mild Gel Cleanser. It contains sandalwood, lavender and petitgrain extracts and effectively cleanses even the most sensitive skin without stripping the epidermis. Avoid over-cleansing, as this can strip the skin of its natural oils.

Moisturise

Contrary to popular belief, even oily skin needs moisture. Opt for a lightweight, non-greasy moisturiser to maintain a healthy skin barrier. Vitaderm’s Ultra-Light Moisture Cream contains phyto extracts of sandalwood and orange leaf that provide effective sebum normalising benefits, and chamomile and lavender extracts offer soothing and healing properties.

Sunscreen

Always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect the skin from UV damage, which can exacerbate acne and lead to premature ageing.

Breakout targeted products

Salicylicacidiswell-knownforitsremarkableabilitytoclearcongestionand reduce inflammation. Vitaderm’s Salicylic Spot Treatment also contains Vitamins B3 and E content that help boost micro-circulation and skin healing.

It’s as easy as Vitamin C Research shows that Vitamin C can help protect the skin from many issues, including sunburn, photo ageing, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, sagging, dryness,andanunevenskintone.It’salsoidealforacne-pronecomplexions. Vitaderm’s oil-free Radian-C Serum boosts skin vitality and brightens the complexion. The addition of hyaluronic acid increases skin hydration.

Balanced diet

Encourage a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit the consumption of sugary and processed foods.

Hydration

Drinking plenty of water helps maintain the skin's elasticity and hydration.

Stress management

Help teenagers develop stress management techniques, such as exercise, meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

Adequate sleep

Ensure teenagers get enough sleep. A well-rested body is better equipped to handle stress and maintain healthy skin.

Consult a dermatologist

If skin issues persist, consult a dermatologist for professional advice and tailored treatment options.

Ibelieve these moms perfectly capture the essence of our mission and vision. The women we feature are not defined solely by motherhood but are also successful professionals and role models in their respective fields. The phrase "more than just a mom" emphasises the depth and complexity of their identities beyond motherhood, showcasing their talents, ambitions, and achievements. Overall, it resonates with our mamas and highlights the empowerment and inspiration that WorkingMama Magazine aims to provide to its readers.

How I effectively balance my work and family responsibilities.

Planning, planning, planning! Getting a new business off the ground requires almost singular focus, so things can get tricky when I must balance that with family demands. I'm lucky our boys are past the stage where they need my constant attention, and my husband is very supportive of my work. That said, it does take planning and open communication to ensure we spend enough quality time together as a couple and a family. Being my own boss means I can structure my work around my lifestyle and family commitments.

Like many families, mealtimes are key moments for connecting and catching up, so we prioritise that on weeknights by cooking and eating together. As a Health Coach servicing busy working professionals, I often have to meet with clients in the evening but only keep three evenings a week open, so I'm not missing family dinner time too often.

I've also had to learn how to prioritise my work tasks. I differentiate between essential items that move the business forward and "nice-todo" items. It allows me to structure my day efficiently, focusing on what truly matters within my current capacity. I've learned that accomplishing three crucial tasks is far more beneficial for my business and overall wellbeing than getting overwhelmed by a neverending to-do list.

Setting and maintaining clear boundaries with clients and professional colleagues is also a game changer. Do not email or answer phone calls during family time. Our boys have busy lives, so we try to be very intentional about scheduling family time—whether it's Sunday roast and a competitive game of backgammon or a live game of Rugby. A family selfie is the only time I pull out my cellphone!

Of course, none of this is possible if I don't take care of myself first, so scheduling 'me-time' is essential.Ihaveavarietyofhobbieswhichhelp me unplug and recharge. There's nothing fun about a tired, overworked, and undernourished Mommy, so start by taking care of yourself, and the rest is sure to follow

Tactics I use to help me manage household chores while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Planning

I have certain days that I do certain chores, and I jot this down on a calendar placed in an area in my home where it is visible to myself and my son. I do most of the chores, like laundry, duringtheweek (early morning before leaving for work) so that I don't have much to do on the weekends. I plan to do things like washing windows, maybe once a month, or budget to get a helper to help me with those 'big' chores.

Delegate

I delegate certain chores to my son. Besides teaching him to keep his space tidy, it teaches him responsibility and how we all have a role in a household. He has certain household chores to complete when he gets home from school before he does his homework, socialises, etc. Things like making his bed and packing his laundry are non-negotiable chores he has to complete daily. We have a 'clean as you go' rule in our home.

Time block

I block time out for work and household duties, especially when working from home.

How I carve out more personal time & prioritise selfcare amidst my busy schedule.

We are an extremely busy family of five. Aside from work, our kids' school and sports schedules profoundly impact our lives. It is one of the reasons why I have always made a point of prioritising my selfcare. The old saying rings true: You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Running energises me - an energised mom is a happy mom, a concept I have explained to my sons from a very young age. Being avid sportsmen themselves, they resonate with how good they feel after performing an activity they enjoy.

My children are as familiar with my running schedule as I am with their school and sports routines – which is honoured as Mom's running time. The understanding and acceptance of this means thatmy entire family encourages and reminds me on the days I set out for running; at times, the boys will even remind me that I need it.

Furthermore, when clashes in our schedules arise, and I choose to run instead of doing a drop-off or watching a match, my boys get it, and I don't feel like a bad mom!!

My daughter is learning from her brother very quickly; she runs and joins in when I do prerun yoga and waves goodbye when I leave for my run.

I run because I want to be happy and healthy for my family, and knowing they want that for me, too, makes prioritising me so much easier!

How I Managed the Pressure of Excelling in Both Career & Parenting.

Balancing work, parenting, and marathon running is tough, but I have found some strategies that help me keep things balanced. I workasaSalesAdministratorandhavea13-year-old daughter and a marathon runner.

Here is how I manage the pressure:

Knowing Why I Work

I work to support my family, setting an example by balancing work, family, and sports. I set a positive example for my daughter, demonstrating the importance of hard work, dedication, and responsibility.

Sticking to a Routine

I rise early to go for a run, get back, prepare my daughter for school, and begin my workday. While routine is important, it's also essential to be flexible and adaptable to unexpected changes or disruptions. I learned to adjust my schedule as needed while still maintaining a sense of structure.

Taking Care of Myself and making time for God

I schedule time for myself, like running, ice dips, and relaxing in the sauna. It helps me with my mental healthandhelpsmefocusbetter.Ilovespendingtime in God’s presence, my source of energy.

Getting Help When Needed

I am not afraid to ask for help when things get overwhelming. Using services like meal delivery makes life easier and gives me more time with my family and friends. Hubby is also a master chef and is a great help.

Encouraging Others

Parents feeling overwhelmed should remember to take breaks and ask for help. Your love, dedication, and sacrifices do not go unnoticed. Keep showing up, loving fiercely, and know you are making a difference in your child's life.

Final Thoughts

As my daughter has grown, I've tried to tune into what activities she enjoys and takes pride in. I let that become the area where I made an effort to support her. CO-PARENTING:

Parenting Partnerships

Co-parenting is an essential part of raising a child. It's a process that involves both parents working together to ensure that their child receives the best possible care and support. When it comes to healthy co-parenting, this involves both parents being actively involved in their child's healthcare, including making medical decisions and ensuring that their child receives regular check-ups and necessary treatments. Healthy co-parenting is crucial. Here are some reasons why parents must work together in their child's healthcare:

Better health outcomes:

When both parents are involved in their child's healthcare, there is a higher likelihood that their child will receive proper medical care and attention. It can lead to better health outcomes for the child, including fewer illnesses and better overall health.

Improved communication:

Healthy co-parenting requires good communication between both parents. By working together on their child's healthcare, parents can learn to communicate more effectively, which can help improve their relationship overall.

Increased trust:

When both parents are actively involved in their child's healthcare, it can help build trust between them. Trust is an essential component of co-parenting, and it can help parentsworktogethermoreeffectivelyinotherareasof their child's life.

Shared responsibility:

Healthy co-parenting allows both parents to share the responsibility of their child's healthcare. It can help reduce stress and ensure both parents contribute to their child's well-being.

Furthermore, unhealthy parenting can have a significant and lasting impact on a child's development and wellbeing. Parents play a crucial role in shaping their children's future, and providing them with love, support, and guidance is essential. If you are a parent struggling with unhealthy parenting patterns, seek help and support to improve your parenting skills and provide your child with the care they deserve.

One of the biggest challenges of co-parenting is effective communication and cooperation between the parents. Even if you trust and respect someone, you might still face conflicts when raising a child together. Successful co-parenting demands strong communication, cooperation, and willingness to compromise. Working together is crucial to ensure we meet the child's needs despite the challenges of dealing withdifferentparentingstyles, priorities, andschedules. KHelping a child with Learning Disabilities

idstodayfacesomuchpressureacademically, andit can be hard for them to articulate what they are feeling or struggling with – which can leave parents feeling powerless.

The most common learning disabilities and how parents can help their children cope:

Learningdisabilitiesaredisordersthataffecttheabilityto understand, speak, orreadlanguage, domathematics, and coordinate movements and functions. These setbacks are more common in children than most people realise, with research citing that 1 in 5 children in the USA have a learning disability.

According to Jonathan Hoffenberg, social worker and PACES Manager at The Parent Centre, learning disabilities are genetic, however, other factors play a role such as premature birth, exposure to alcohol, drugs, toxins, or infections during pregnancy. While these disorders are present at birth, most of the time they are only picked up in school.

“There is still a lot we don’t know about learning disorders and their exact causes. Psychology is a relatively new science so as we learn more about the brain, we can increase our understanding of these disabilities,” says Hoffenberg.

He says what’s important to understand is that learning disabilities are not linked to intelligence or motivation. “People who have a learning disability are not “stupid” or “lazy.” Ironically high intelligence can often mask a learning disability.”

Apr/Jun 2024 | WMM 23

Below, Hoffenberg outlines four different learning disorders and their symptoms;

2. Dyscalculia

This affects maths skills. For children with this disorder, it’s difficult for them to understand mathematical concepts and do basic maths problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

4. Auditory and visual processing disorders

Auditory processing disorders affect the processing of sounds. A child's ears may be fine, but the brain struggles to filter and differentiate sounds. A child may confuse the order or source of sounds and may struggle to hear a teacher's voice against background noise. This can present as a language processing disorder where the child struggles to attach meaning to sound groups that make up words and sentences. Individuals with visual processing struggle to interpret letters into language.

1. Dyslexia

This is the most common learning disability: Dyslexia affects reading and language processing skills. Common symptoms include reversing letters, and not being able to break words down. It can affect how we hear, orprocessspokenlanguage.Itaffectsspelling, copying, and reading. Because reading and comprehension are such a vital early part of education Dyslexia can delay speech and reading. This can make children self-conscious and affect self-esteem.

3. Dysgraphia

This is a learning disability that affects a person’s ability to write, whereas Dyslexia is about reading and language processing. Dysgraphia impacts letter spacing, the ability to organise thoughts and ideas into writing, and presents as children with messy and slow handwriting. This difficulty in translating thoughts into writing affects spelling, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as critical thinking and memory.

How Parents can support

ADHD and ADD are not learning disabilities

Hoffenberg notes that whilst bothAttention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) have an impact on learning, just like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can have an impact on learning, these are not strictly classed as learning disabilities. ADD and ADHD are neurological conditions with symptoms of inattention, distractibility, and poor working memory (executive functions).

What makes ADHD/ADD different from learning disabilities is how they are treated. ADHD/ADD can need medication, but it can also be positively impacted by diet, exercise, and mindfulness such as learning meditation, as well as coaching and counselling.

Hoffenberg points out that parents can acknowledge the learning issues their children face while appreciating their differences. “Yes, your child is different, but some differences have benefits. ADHD people can transition through emotions quickly which can mean they are not as affected by negative feelings. Children with a learning disability in one area may have strengths in others, for example, children who struggle to read can be excellent auditory learners.”

TIPS

Address any possible teasing and “othering.” Try to make your child feel unique and valuable for who they are.

Become an advocate for your child. Research how you can practically help them with their disability.

Join a support group, find parents with similar challenges, and seek counselling. Having a child with a learning disability can feel like a burden and cause stress. It can trigger feelings of anger and failure, therefore support and self-care are important.

From Brain Fog to Finding Balance: My Journey with Hypothyroidism

26 WMM | Apr/Jun 2024
Health & Well-being

In conversation with working mama Delica Krause, Client Service & Operations Director at 2Stories content agency and hypothyroidism warrior.

Hypothyroidism, simply put, is when your thyroid gland isn't producing enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in your neck that makes this hormone, kind of like a tiny factory.

This hormone acts like a master switch, controlling how your body uses energy. When you don't have enough of this hormone, your body slows down, leading to tiredness, weight gain, and even feeling forgetful or foggy in the head. Diagnosed with this condition over 11 years ago, Delicia shares her experience.

Can you tell us about when and how you were diagnosed with hypothyroidism?

What initial symptoms led you to seek medical help?

It's been a long journey! I initially went to see my General Practitioner (GP) because I thought I was experiencing early-onset Dementia. I was having the worst brain fog, not being able to remember simple things, conversations or shared memories, which is totally out of character for me, and it was freaking me out.

During my examination, my GP noticed heavy hair growth on the side of my face and suggested I go for blood tests, which showed I had hypothyroidism.

What were the biggest challenges in getting diagnosed and finding the proper medication dosage?

It was a very subtle conversation, and she provided me with a pill and the usual encouragement, saying it 'should' alleviate the symptoms I was experiencing. Mind you, this is a doctor I've been going to for years, a trusted family advisorandIfeltthatwhatshewasprescribingwouldhelp. Now, you don't think about it and go into further detail - I stumbled on how complex my condition was by accident.

And did the pill help?

For the first while, yes. I was taking these meds for about two years, for all intents and purposes. It was fine for the most part, but I still didn't feel well after a while. I had joined this strength training bootcamp and was feeling toned and fabulous. Suddenly, I began experiencing sharp muscular pains in my shoulder region, and I went back to my doctor, assuming I had strained my shoulder.

After receiving topical treatment, I noticed a temporary improvement, but it returned with a vengeance soon after. Eventually, I went for an MRI - it revealed two (2) slipped

discs in my neck, which required more treatment and wearing a neck brace for two months.

I was forced to give up my bootcamp exercises and felt lost and frustrated. At this point, I decided to take matters into my own hands, researching my condition in more detail. It's through this research that I discovered all the other symptoms associated with hypothyroidism and discovered that one of them was stiff joints. I was training under a false assumption that I was doing what was best for my body, but in fact I performed exercises that were not appropriate for my needs.

That sounds excruciating! What was your next move?

Because of my slipped disc, I was forced to give up training and gained weight rapidly. I can't remember the exact date, but I came across this Integrative Doctor on Instagram who I initially consulted, specifically to help with weight loss. She immediately started digging into what was causing my weight gain to address that underlying cause.

She put me on a weight protocol, essentially an elimination diet with specific treatments to help speed upmymetabolism.Wedidanotherroundofbloodtests, which showed that the meds provided by my GP were having no positive effect on treating my hypothyroidism symptoms to an extent, but not the actual condition. I stopped using that medication completely.

So what was the alternative?

A natural thyroid treatment is currently exclusively available through the integrative network, with natural supplements like curcumin to combat inflammation and VitaminBtohelpwithmetabolism.Iwassogladtobeon natural treatment solutions because if I needed to be on meds long-term, I didn't want to be pumping my body of chemicals, especially chemicals that weren’t working.

And the root cause?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when my youngest was about 2-years old. I’ve had a difficult pregnancy, and while no doctor has confirmed this, I suspect that's what triggered everything to begin with.

Did you find any specific dietary or lifestyle changes that helped manage your condition, and how did that impact your symptoms?

I had to get my gut health checked! That meant working through my emotional trauma as well as cutting out certainfoods.Luckily, myhusbandandIenjoyedhealthy lifestyles. I had to cut out gluten completely, which at the time was challenging as gluten-free products weren't that widely available, and I also had to deal with

Apr/Jun 2024 | WMM 27

feeling 'othered' in my community.

What gluten-free food was available was terrible, so it was quite an adjustment, but I love cooking, so it was great to experiment. I can still have dairy in small doses, but gluten makes me very sick. And that meant educating myself and consistently checking food labels for hidden gluten sources. As an example, I was eating sushi and getting sick. I thought it might be the rice itself - but it was the soy sauce - typically made with crushed wheat. Who knew?

At first, I was also shy about asking for gluten-free meals when eating out. I didn't want to be the odd one out or feel like I was being a hassle. Even with lactose, people would say: "Agh, what's gonna happen? A bit of bloating, so what's the big deal?" But this was my health, and I had to start standing up for myself more. Now I don't think twice about it.

Are there specific aspects like energy levels, mood, or sleep that have been affected?

It was at the tail end of the COVID pandemic. My dad surprised us while we were on a family holiday and subsequently found out he had COVID. Myself and a few other family members contracted it. Unfortunately, he passed away due to comorbidities, and the emotional distress of losing my father, combined with a severe case of COVID -19, drove me to the brink of despair. I couldn't sleep at all and was experiencing panic attacks aggravated by the condition.

How are you now?

I didn't feel well at all last year - I was dealing with the loss of my dad and had started a new job, and you know how we are - we want to prove ourselves and push ourselves to the limit. My self-care took a back seat, which was a big mistake. I was still taking my meds, but holistically, I wasn't doing what I needed to do to support the meds. I eventually landed up in hospital with the worst case of tonsilitis - my body's way of saying I needed to refocus and get back on track with my health. I'm happy to say I'm in a much better space now.

Your children were very young when you got diagnosed? Were you open with them? How did the family have to adapt?

We’re a very tight-knit family, and I've always been transparent with the children. I decided not to let my dietary needs impact them, so I cooked them their usual favourites with little tweaks for myself. I also learnt to delegate! Usually, after cooking and supper time, I'd also clean up and do the dishes. That's changed - new year, new rules! Apart from that, we’re all very active and take each day as it comes.

What surprised you most about hypothyroidism?

The realisation that one pill wouldn’t solve the problem. You HAVE to make lifestyle changes. You have to eat right. You have to bemindful of how you move your body. People don’t realise that until they are in the same situation. No one can relate until they’re there.

A big challenge for many working moms is how to manage a chronic condition in the workplace. What was your employer's response?

Luckily, I work with very understanding people. I was upfront with them and told them what I needed based on past experiences. I make sure I check in with how I'm feeling. I take a conscious step back. I know when to back off and not be overly occupied. We also have a hybrid working structure, which gives me more flexibility. Little things like taking 10 minutes to sit outside in the sun alone with a cup of tea before the day gets hectic make such a difference!

I actively try to find time to exercise because I know whatwillhappentomeifIdon't,evenifit'sin-between shuttlingkidstotheirvariousactivities.AlthoughImay notworkouteveryday, evenifIworkouttwiceaweek - I'm still moving my body. Mentally, I can handle a lot, but my body can't, so I've learnt to listen to my body and act accordingly.

It takes a mindset shift. You don't always get it right, and some days are easier than others, but you have to keep trying. Of course, I miss eating a pie or samosa and looking at it, I know it isn't worth it.

Only you can make that shift. Always choose your health.

Have you found any support groups or resources particularly helpful in managing your hypothyroidism and its impact on your daily life?

Not so much physical support groups, but online. I follow people who are of interest to my health. I'm constantlylearning, anditstrialanderror. There’salot of information out there, especially on supplements, andyouhavetosiftthroughtofindoutwhat’srealand what's marketing.

I also happily tell my story to whoever wants to hear it. Initially, I kept my condition secret, but then I realised thattherearesomanypeopleouttherewiththesame problems. Society makes you feel like you are losing the plot, so we don't discuss it. I've discovered that talkingaboutitandsharingwhatI'velearnedhelpsme cope.

28 WMM | Apr/Jun 2024

While I’m learning, I become a support to the next person.

What message would you like to convey to other working mothers who may be experiencing similar symptoms but haven't yet sought medical advice?

The longer you wait, the costlier it becomes financially, physically, andmentally.Gethelpfromadoctorwhouses a holistic approach. It doesn't mean the end of your world. I understand everyone can't afford to go to an Integrative doctor, but you’ll end up spending more money on living an unhealthy lifestyle. Managing your chronic health can be expensive. Do your homework on supplements to avoid wasting money on gimmicky things that don't work. Start where you are, like going for a free walk around your neighborhood - it doesn't have to be a gym.

What are some tips you would offer to women who are struggling with an invisible illness like hypothyroidism?

Don't downplay how you feel, especially to your immediate family, who is often your main support structure. The more you talk about it, the easier it can be.

Also, make small changes based on your family structure and find ways to incorporate your needs without adding extra stress to your day.

You will get better, but it will take time. There are no quick fixes. Concentrate on the primary issue areas and proceed as gradually as possible. Make notes of what makes you feel bad, and start cutting it out bit by bit. People will mean well and give you advice, but take the time to research, find what works for you and give yourself the time to make the changes. Eventually, it will become a lifestyle.

Try and see the small wins instead of focusing on the problem.

If you're experiencing symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, or brain fog, don't wait to seek medical advice. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a world of difference.

Relax. Reflect. Recharge.

The Art of Self-Care

Marco Pierre White (British Chef) once said: “Perfection is simple, small things done perfectly." Self-care should also fall under this ambit, where intentional, constant, incremental improvement is encouraged, leading to better care of self. Another interesting Japanese term noted in The Art of Learning Anew by Bene Lu (2022) is the term - Kaizen - a philosophy of continuous improvement, where one aims to improve and better oneself by just 1% every day.

As women, we constantly and frequently give until we run out. Only then do we realise that we gave more than we should have! There are indicators of such, for instance, lethargy, fatigue, listlessness, moodiness, easily irritated, easily angered, easily frustrated, and easily triggered, etc. Women are nurturers and givers of life (literally and figuratively), and it has proven to be a curse and a blessing.

Curse in the sense that we forget to set boundaries on how far and how much we can give of ourselves. It then leads to burnout, depression, self-deprecation, apology, and so on. We should be setting our boundaries to maintain our emotional and mental-spiritual equilibrium. We often hear that one cannot pour from an empty cup, meaning one cannot give what is no longer there. You cannot give love if you are empty of love. You cannot show kindness, care, sympathy, servitude, and other nurturing traits if you have "used them" all up without replenishing the cup.

The cup, in essence, is your heart, your Being, and your soul! For most women, giving is our “default mode." It's time to reset this default mode and intentionally shift the paradigm to benefit our wellness and Being. 1% of “turning the dial up” a day is more than enough. There is still and always will be so much joy and gratification in giving, and this is where the aspect of Blessings comes in - when we give without expectations, fully and wholeheartedly, when we give with lovewhenweteachwithlove, andwhenweholdoneanother up with love. We open ourselves up to being someone’s blessing. It is nothing out of the ordinary because we are made with love, by love, for love, and from love - that's why it is so natural for women to give.

The trick is to know when giving of ourselves moves from blessing to curse. This shift becomes easily detectable when we understand ourselves holistically.

How do we begin to do that? I hear you ask.

We begin by intentionally taking time to understand ourselves, our boundaries, what makes us tick, who we are behind the mask, and what we are about when all is said and done. Understanding ourselves begins when we practice the principles that govern EQ (Emotional Quotient, also known as Emotional Intelligence). These principles are selfawareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, as stated in Emotional Intelligence by D. Goleman (2006)

To understand and develop these critical attributes, one should explore, beforehand, the 3C’s (Consciousness, Compassion, Connections) Boost your Emotional Intelligence by I. Valks (2022) retrieved from www.poweroftimeoff.com.

Consciousness –when we are fully living in the presence and being aware of the NOW. Constantly reminding ourselves to be calm in the storm and trusting that all will be as it should be. It is achieved through constant re-centering and practicing the Art of Mindfulness, described in The Art of Learning Anew by Bene Lu (2022)

Compassion – being kind to those around us but essentially, being kind to ourselves by taking extra care of our wellbeing and wellness of mind, body, spirit, and soul. By being a little more loving towards ourselves every day, and learning to forgive ourselves from past mistakes and mishaps. By letting go of what was to allow for what is and what is to come.

Connections – We are social beings and we thrive in our interconnectedness with others around us and with ourselves. It is just as critical to connect with your body, mind, spirit, and soul. It is imperative and so crucial to understand the rhythm and vibration frequency of your Being. Self-care is self-love in its purest form and should never, ever be negated.

Renewal: Nurturing Self-Care & Personal Growth in South Africa

As we journey through the maze of balancing career aspirations with the joys of motherhood, the call to renewal resonates more deeply than ever. As a fellow mother of a five-year-old juggling various work commitments, I understand the challenges we face in prioritising self-care and personal growth amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

But in the chaos lies an opportunity for transformation. Imagine carving out moments of tranquility and reflection where you can recharge your spirit and nourish your soul. Picture yourself immersed in the breathtaking beauty of South Africa, surrounded by the soothing sounds of nature, with the freedom to explore new avenues of self-discovery and expression. As a mother, I know how crucial it is to find balance and renewal in our busy lives.

From the majestic Drakensberg Mountains to the idyllic beaches of the Western Cape, South Africa offers countless settings conducive to self-reflection and growth. Awe-inspiring landscapes and rhythmic cycles in nature promote introspection and renewal. Whether it's a solitary hike through the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma or a sunrise yoga session overlooking the rolling hills of Mpumalanga, these moments of communion with the natural world awaken a sense of interconnectedness and inner peace.

Nurturing self-care is not merely a trend; it's a transformative journey that we embark upon to reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. In a society marked by hustle and bustle, it's easy to lose sight of our own needs amidst the clamor of daily life. However, by prioritizing self-care practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and holistic wellness, we cultivate resilience and nourish the roots of our being. In the labyrinth of life, renewal often reveals itself in

unexpected ways, beckoning us to explore new avenues of self-discovery and expression. South Africa's diverse cultural landscape provides a wide range of inspiration and creativity, whether it's through the arts, music, or literature. Engaging in creative pursuits nourishes the soul and also fosters a sense of innovation and exploration. Whether capturing the vibrant colors of a sunset over the Karoo plains through painting or blending the complex rhythms of African beats into a musical composition, these instances of artistic expression act as pathways to personal growth and rejuvenation.

Moreover, as we navigate the complexities of modern existence, it's essential to cultivate resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. In South Africa, a land steeped in a history of triumphs and challenges, the spirit of resilience runs deep within the collective consciousness. Drawing upon the wisdom of our ancestors and the resilience of the natural world, we find the strength to weather life's storms and emerge stronger than before. Through resilience, we embrace change as an opportunity for growth and renewal, harnessing the power of our inner fortitude to navigate life's ever-shifting terrain.

In the heart of South Africa and the beauty and diversity surrounding us, let us embrace renewal as a sacred journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and resilience. Through self-care, personal growth, artistic expression, and collective solidarity, we illuminate the path toward a brighter, more resilient future for all. Join me in answering the call to renewal as we reclaim our power as working mothers and embrace a life of purpose, vitality, and joy. Together, let us illuminate the path toward a brighter, more fulfilling future for ourselves and our loved ones.

How to Budget, Plan for your Trip, & During Trip's Cost Cutting.

It is never too early to start planning and budgeting for your Bucket list trip.

Plan

Moms, get out your map, pen, and notepad and start planning! Choosing between adventure, the beach, food, and shopping is challenging.

Off-peak or during peak periods-holiday seasons?

Once you have chosen when to travel, the next item on your list of priorities is to select the location. Take into consideration - weather. Yes, the weather! It has a significant impact because some places are only accessible via ferries.

Budget

1. I call it a "Kitty." Place money in an envelope for tips, taxis, rail, public bus, lunch and dinner and keep it separate from your shopping money.

2. Cost-cutting: shop at local shops, kiosks, and supermarkets and buy bulk water and cold drinks.

3. Including breakfast at the hotel ensures convenience, saves time, and offers a cost-saving option when prepaid.

4. Explore hotels that offer added value with complimentary meals such as lunch, afternoon tea, or dinner.

5. If money is tight, you may consider visiting low-cost locations like Egypt and Turkey, which both allow free or discounted visas. Then, you can save up for trips to other destinations that require visas.

6. Consider travelling during the shoulder season in Europe, either at the end of May, early June, or September.

7. Explore special deals; sometimes, a 5-star hotel offers discounts that bring the cost down to that of a 4-star hotel.

8. Opt for seat-in-coach transfers instead of private transfers. While shared transfers may take longer to reach your hotel, they are cost-effective.

40 WMM | Apr/Jun 2024
Lifestyle & Leisure

9. Choose all-inclusive packages that include meals and beverages when visiting places like Mauritius, Zanzibar, the Maldives, and Mexico. These packages typically include breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, cocktails, selected house wines, beers, soft beers, cold drinks, juices, and mineral water.

10. Select day tours with lunch and dinner and ensure that all entrance fees are included at the touristic site when pre-booking a day tour.

11. Shop where the Locals shop so you can find great bargains and can negotiate prices.

12. Make a clear distinction between needs and wants when making purchases. It's easy to replace Wants items. Necessities are made use of until they wear out or become unusable.

13. Consider purchasing souvenirs that have practical everyday uses.

14. Walk as much as possible. The best way to explore is to pack in those comfy walking shoes!

15. Streamline your visit. Pre-purchase entry passes for tourist sites such as London and Paris. Opt for city sightseeing buses with a minimum of 2 days, preferably including a complimentary walking tour or boat ride.

16. Some transit airports are destinations in themselves, like Changi in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Atatürk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey. Take the opportunity to explore these airports during your layover.

17. Pack as lightly as possible when you depart, bringing only essential items and toiletries.

18. Pre-purchasing flights with baggage included in the airfare may not be beneficial if the initial flight prices are low, only to incur additional fees for extra bags at the airport upon arrival.

19. Consider buying clothes and shoes during your trip to Turkey, Morocco, Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, or Egypt. Stock up those bags, Mama!

20. Overnight trains offer transportation and accommodation, allowing travellers to immerse themselves in the local culture and engage with locals. An example is the overnight train journey from Chiang Mai to Bangkok or Cairo to Luxor.

21. Book with a travel advisor-we know all the deals-hotels-day tours, we provide advice, add value, and are available in the event of an emergency.

22. Place any available savings in an interest-bearing Savings Account for travel purposes.

23. Last but not least-Book early-at least 11 Months in advance.

Five things that may surprise you about your bond.

Buying a home is a significant purchase and one that will most likely require some form of financial assistance in the form of a bond, also known as a home loan. While this process is standard practice for most buyers who are unable to pay cash for their homes, there are some things about having a bond that may come as a surprise, says Bradd Bendall, interim CEO of BetterBond.

Here are five things that may surprise you about your bond:

1.

The earlier in the month you pay your bond, the less interest you will accumulate. This can help you shave years off your bond repayment over the loan repayment period. “Another trick to save interest is to split your monthly bond instalment,” says Bendall. So, if your bond repayment is R8 000, arrange with the bank to deduct R4 000 on the last day of the month and the balance on the 15th. The full amount will be paid within 30 days, but the interest – which is calculated daily – will be reduced.

2.

If you can pay more than the required monthly instalment on your bond, you take years off your bond repayment period. Also, by paying off the balance sooner, you will reduce your interest over the loan repayment period. On a R2 million bond, at a prime lending rate of 11.75%, a payment of R1 000 extra each month will save R564 586 in interest over the loan period, which will also be shortened by three years from 20 years to 205 months.

3.Don’t cancel your bond once you have paid the full amount. If you keep the bond open, it will still be possible to access funds if needed. Any amount you pay over and above your instalment lies in an access facility and this can be accessed at a later stage, says Bendall. “Many homeowners use their primary residence to access funds so that

they can buy their second property. There is no real benefit in cancelling your bond, unless you are selling the property, or you are absolutely sure that you will not be needing to access funds again. The bank will keep your account open unless instructed otherwise.”

4.

Applying for a joint bond with a partner, family member or friend can make home ownership more accessible. Up to 12 people can apply for a joint bond, says Bendall. “Irrespective of how many people share joint bond ownership on a property, make sure that there is a clear contract in place. This agreement should include information about the sharing of the bond and access to the bond, each person’s financial contribution and who is responsible for managing the property.”

5.Working with a bond originator can mean a more favourable interest which will save you money on your monthly bond payments. “By approaching multiple banks, BetterBond can negotiate an interest rate concession because the banks compete to offer the best deal based on your buyer risk profile.” Currently, BetterBond’s average interest rate concession when applying to four banks is 0.61%. This means that you could pay up to 0.61% less than the interest rate offered by the bank. On a R2 million bond, if the bank offers a prime lending rate of 11.75%, you will pay an interest rate of 10.91%, a saving of R1 153 a month.

It may seem daunting at first, but with expert advice and some insider knowledge, you can navigate the homebuying journey knowing that you are making an informed decision, concludes Bendall.

How to achieve a healthy corporate balance

"For many of us this year has started at an extreme pace and any intentions of introducing new habits have most likely fallen by the wayside", says Nomvula Mnguni, Talent Acquisition Manager atBIZMOD Consulting

“The first step to creating a healthy corporate balance is understanding the difference between operational tasks and strategic objectives in your organisation,” says Mnguni.

Operational tasks are critical daily activities whereas strategic objectives are the overall mission of the organisation that enables it to reach desired objectives.

Working in a deadline-driven environment can be extremely stressful. Having effective tools in place to help plan your day, and manage your workload can help to achieve an allusive work-life balance. “It may take some time to become

consistent in using the tools but power through as the benefits are worth it,” says Mnguni.

She provides the below tips while explaining that by putting in place small changes, we can move towards achieving a healthy corporate balance:

1. Starteachday with a plan. Create a system that prioritisesyour day according to the urgency and importance of tasks. Go through the activities from the previous day and carry over anything you may not have completed.

2. Establish your daily SMART Goals. Specific,Measurable,Achievable,Reali stic, andTimelygoals. By limiting multitasking and dividing your tasks into subtasks you will achieve more throughout the day.

3. Teamwork.

Thisis vital in helping to achieve

operational tasksandhaving the right people to support you is imperative.Putting the correct processesin place that individuals are aware of and required to adhere to, assists in the achievement of operational tasks.

4. Divide tasks into strategic objectives and operational tasks. The guidance of senior management and mentors will help in achieving strategic objectives and implementing and managing performance.

5. Operational tasks are required to achieve strategic objectives andKPIswill create the link by setting daily, weekly, and monthly targets.

6. Utilisetechnology to keep track of your pipeline and quantifiable data so that you can measure achievements and monitor performance.

“These tips will assist in a healthy corporate lifestyle while improving your delivery,” Mnguni concludes.

Ask Coach Canz

Your burning health questions answered.

I keep hearing about self-love and how we need to practice self-care, but what does self-love mean?

Self-love is a matter of deep personal perspective and how it is expressed (self-care) will vary greatly from person to person. That said, self-love isn't about arrogance or vanity. It's about recognising your worth, outside of external achievements or opinions. It's about treating yourself with kindness and respect. It means:

Embracing self-love empowers us to challenge the negative thought patterns that hold us back from making positive changes in our lives. Limiting beliefs or negative self-talkcanstartinchildhoodandfollowusintoadulthood so seek professional help if you feel stuck.

Can hormone imbalance cause depression?

The short answer is yes. Hormones are chemical messengers in your body that hold the power to change how you look, and how you feel and affect your long-term health. Here’s an example…Imagine oestrogen and progesterone (2 major female hormones) are like the conductors in an orchestra, guiding the production of other brain chemicals like serotonin, which helps regulate mood. During menopause, when oestrogen and progesterone levels naturally decline, it can be like the conductors having trouble keeping things in sync. This disruption can affect serotonin production, potentially leading to feelings of sadness, fatigue, and a lack of motivation.

Hormone balance is a key factor for maintaining both emotional and physical health. However, it is very important to remember that many factors influence feelings of depression. If you’re concerned, please speak to a professional who can help you identify the root cause of your feelings and provide appropriate treatment options.
