PINK OCTOBER

As you may already know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But, how many of you know that Alexander Penney (previous editor-in-chief of Self magazine), and the late Evelyn Lauder (Estee Lauder) created the pink ribbon symbolizing Breast Cancer Awareness? They launched the Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in 1992 and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCFR) in 1993.

Why was raising awareness a top priority for me? Because in my early twenties, I remember, while in the shower and self-examining my breast, I felt a lump in my left breast. The next day I arrived at the doctor’s office, he discovered lumps in both my breasts. Then, all I could think of was: I’m still so young, and I have a toddler who still needs her mommy to be okay. I had a mammogram scheduled, and my doctor advised me not to panic and to wait for the results as this may not always be cancerous. To my relief, the lumps were non-cancerous, but I know some women might not be lucky as I was. But thank God for the breast cancer awareness campaigns I could act on immediately. Let’s keep raising awareness and wear our ribbons so more women survive.

Read up on our beauty article, where we chat with Monique Piderit, a Registered Dietician, on how our lifestyle and diet impact our hair. And check out Megan Goliath of FEMMOVE- a holistic experience of dance, movement, and coaching methodologies to empower and uplift women of all ages and sizes looking to transform their overall health and well-being. …and so much more

END UP INSPIRED!

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Early Detection Saves Lives

Educating the public on breast cancer symptoms and treatment is crucial in raising awareness and reducing stigma.

There is an increase in breast cancer cases among South African women, and it is one of the most prevalent cancers among women. Although it primarily affects women, it can also affect men. It is crucial to detect breast cancer early to treat it effectively.

Facts about breast cancer

Early detection of the condition can improve treatment and prognosis. When breast cancer is detected early, about 90% of patients live for many years following their diagnosis. Breast self-examinations and mammograms are essential for early detection. When you seek treatment early, you are more likely to have an effective outcome, resulting in less pain and suffering and lowering the risk of death. Public and private healthcare structures in South Africa designated October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” to raise awareness of this debilitating disease across all races and class structures.

“Symptoms of breast cancer

• General pain in or on any part of the breast (although most breast cancers present as lumps without pain).

• Irritated or itchy breasts.

• Presence of a lump in or near the breast or in the underarm area.

• Thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.

A change in the size or shape of the breast

• A dimple or puckering in the skin of the breast makes it look like the skin of an orange

• An inverted nipple (nipple turned inward into the breast)

• Bloody discharge, or scaly, red, or swollen skin on the breast, nipple, or areola (the dark skin around the nipple)

• Changes in how the breast feels (hardness, tenderness, or unusual warmth)

• Skin changes, like swelling, redness, or other visible differences in one or both breasts.”

Risk factors: You have an increased risk of developing breast cancer if you are:

• Are between the ages of 40 and 50

• Have a family history of breast cancer

• Have a history of cancer and have received treatment for it

• Gave birth to your first child after 30 or have never had children

• Menstruated before your teens

• Experienced menopause after the age of 50

• Long-term hormone replacement therapy.

Other possible risk factors for breast cancer include alcohol and tobacco use, obesity, a diet high in fat, and a lack of physical exercise.

How to detect breast cancer:

Self-examination – Every woman needs to examine her breasts and underarms regularly every month to check for any changes to her breasts. Self-examination can help women detect cysts or other benign breast problems between check-ups. If you notice any changes in your breast during self-exams, let your doctor know.

Preventive screening – A mammogram is an X-ray examination of the breast used to detect and diagnose breast ailments, including a tumor that is not big enough to be felt. Even if you feel healthy now, simply being a female and aging places you at risk for breast cancer. Getting checked frequently can put your mind at ease.

Remember, these signs and symptoms may also be caused by numerous conditions other than cancer. It is, therefore, essential to consult a doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

A HOLISTIC EXPERIENCE OF DANCE

MEET MEGAN GOLIATH…

A Pro Dancer, Performer, Teacher, Self-Development Coach, Entrepreneur, and Founder of Femmove. She defines herself, in modern terms, as the quintessential “divine feminine.” The female who shows up consistently to harness her inner beauty and energy by striving to be the best version of herself.

She started dancing at four, a childhood hobby that evolved over many years into an inner journey of the soul and self-discovery. Her fruitful dance experiences included dance competitions, traveling locally and internationally, tv commercials, music videos, working with corporate brands, and the list continues. Her passion for empowering women was inspired by her teaching experience with the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. As a result of her teaching experiences, she realised that women want to be heard, seen, loved, appreciated, and valued.

16Article -

She expresses dance as a universal language, proving that it is a beautiful expression that can ultimately connect us all. Her connection through dance is her safe space – a gateway for freedom of creative expression, a way to deal with real-life challenges, trauma, and self-inflicted pain. Detaching herself from society’s definition of who ‘I should be’; and its ideology of a ‘perfect body’ contributed to her feeling unworthy, resulting in low self-esteem and feeling inadequate.

In the wake of the worldwide pandemic, the entertainment industry was shut down, and losing her job, income, and worldly possessions, Megan felt stuck, unhappy, and without purpose. She awakened by realising how all the programming, conditioning, and trauma kept her from stepping into her true self and power.

This evoked an inner journey of self-discovery and deep healing. Using a holistic approach and an optimistic nature, she took the opportunity to reinvent herself. She harnessed the power of dance and movement to release negative energy and trauma stored in the body.

WHAT IS FEMMOVE, AND WHY WAS IT CREATED?

Femmove is a holistic experience of dance, movement, and coaching methodologies to empower and uplift women of all ages and sizes looking to transform their overall health and well-being. We create an inner experience of your personal and unique self-love journey by honouring, loving, respecting, and celebrating your body to thrive in your authentic self.

Femmove was created for women of all sizes, shapes, and forms to feel empowered and to challenge the idea of a “perfect body” and negative perceptions of themselves. The focus is on breaking free from that limiting mindset and loving ourselves from the inside out through dance, movement, holistic wellness, mindfulness, and coaching methodology. This holistic approach helps us embark on an inner journey; to become the best version of who we are, recognise the limitless potential within ourselves, and transform our lives to fit our purpose. Live Well

You know the saying ‘work smarter, not hard er’, you should take the same approach to life.

In my world, we teach working mamas (and papas and anyone reading this article) to be proactive. We help you care for yourself while you are still healthy: mind and body. In my opinion, medications prescribed are simply for managing symptoms. When I used to get the flu, I already had it; the meds I received only helped me breathe, reduce mucus buildup, and avoid infection.

A supplement is a great way to be proactive about your health - it is a way to ensure that your body gets what it needs from another source other than your daily diet.

Now you will ask me how one knows what supplement to take. Your doctor should be able to provide you with more information on that. According to studies, our bodies require essential sugars called glycans. It allows our cells to communicate effectively so our bodies can function optimally.

I know nobody likes to be sick, especially me. I prefer the natural way of doing things (click the links below). https://www.solutions4health.com.au/histo ry-of-oil-of-oregano/#:~:text=The%20Amazing%20 Hyssop%20of%20the%20Bible%20(Wild%20Oregano)& text=And%20he%20shall%20sprinkle%20upon,Lev%20 14%3A4%2D7

Here are a few FREE ways to be proactive about your health Drink water - I battle with this (I’m sure many can relate). I add essential oils to flavor my water or add a slice of lemon and mint. You can also infuse your water with fruit. https://www.tasteofhome.com/collection/in fused-water-ideas/

Consider movement - stretches morning and night are sufficient to allow blood flow and muscle stimulation that reduces pain.

Do what you love - Why? When you are happy your brain releases serotonin. (Read more here https://www.healthline.com/health/ mental-health/serotonin); which is crucial for your mental health and can help fight anxiety triggers that cause anxiety/depression.

Eat Well - A healthy diet is essential for good health and nutrition. It protects you against chronic non-infectious diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Eating a variety of foods and consuming less salt, sugars, and saturated and industrially produced trans-fats, are essential for a healthy diet.

It may not be easy to incorporate these simple changes into your life but it can make all the difference in starting a journey in proactive health.

I believe that being proactive regarding my health now outweighs the negative experiences I could face if I were careless now and depen dent on the fact that I have medical aid.

I want to live - long and healthy, so Working Mama (papa, and anyone reading this article)are you ready to start your journey?

Technical Travel Hacks.

It’s a while since the pandemic loosened its grip on us. We are motivated more than enough to be out and about.’ Travel safe’ has cemented itself as a top wish list and a breakthrough from the monotony of covid confinement. The primary focus today is Personalized Travelling Preferences and customized health alerts on the place of destination.

Here is a snapshot of unique Technical Hacks that are too good to miss to explore the world again. Planning a travel trip can be effortless and fun-filled with a bit of research and a modified approach to tested tech-savvy apps.

Travel Smooth

The current Flight rates are still 30% higher than usual. With the brutal combination of high rising inflation and travel disruptions, we all are curious to strike a good deal on plane tickets. Apps like GoogleFlights, help us toggle on tracking the prevailing prices and receiving e-mail updates when the airfare plummets so that we can buy tickets at a cheaper rate directly from airlines. We can maximize comfort by choosing the best seats at a more affordable rate through a Web tool called SeatGuru. It will let travelers plug in the Flight numbers and review the aircraft’s detailed seating chart having extra legroom, limited recline and overhead storage.

In the era of frequent cancellations and delays, we can monitor flight status through FlightAware and Flightradar24. Downloading them on cell phones helps us track and monitor real-time information about thousands of aircraft worldwide. LoungeBuddy enables us to locate Lounges with less traffic and more accessible slip-ins.

Ways to organize

During the pandemic, travelers used to churn tourism websites to learn about the thicket of covid restrictions on destinations. Now different genuine apps like JoinSherpa.com, GrouponGetaways, and TripAdvisor help the customers with all details of travel requirements. Organizing travel documents and itineraries are still a hassle since we have to carry additional information than before. A popular app, TripIt, can create a comprehensive itinerary, helpful alerts, hotel bookings, car rentals, and reservations through a distant memory. It creates magic by letting us know the exact flight location, where there’s a delay, and which gate to leave. We can also preserve Digital vaccine records and photographs of the physical vaccine card in our Notes App.

Locate your luggage

With a steep staff shortage, dislocated luggage incidence has become a nightmare. Wireless trackers like Tile and Apple’s AirTag help slip miniature beacons into the baggage to track the approximate location of lost luggage on the map. Even if our luggage is not lost, we get peace of mind knowing precisely where our luggage is.

Say Yes, to Hotel Apps.

To manage hotel reservations, download the hotel’s App if it has one. That is especially important now because many branded hotels let you do the check-in via their App. And the sooner you do, the better your room will be ready. Moreover, if you forget to check in on time due to a flight delay, the hotel may allow the space to some one else, given a no-show.

Happy Journey.

Responsibility for signing surety

Signing surety means you agree to be legally responsible if another person fails to pay a debt or to perform a duty.

Before binding yourself as a surety, one should fully understand the nature and consequences of a suretyship agreement.

Advice if you sign surety.

Make sure you can afford to repay the loan should the borrower fail to pay a repayment. (Otherwise, it can negatively affect your credit rating).

Surety contracts

A surety contract is a legally binding agreement in which the signee accepts responsibility for another individual’s contractual obligations. A co-signer is a party who agrees to pay back a loan when the primary borrower defaults or falls behind.

An individual may sign a surety contract to help a child, family member, or close friend obtain a car loan, start a business, or complete some other high-risk transaction. Many lending situa tions require assisting the borrower in getting a better interest rate.

Surety contracts are intended to minimise the risk to the lender, who would rather not spend money on collection agencies or lawyers to secure repayment of a loan if the borrower defaults.

Anyone requested to co-sign a loan should fully understand their risk should the loan go unpaid.

Understand how your liability for someone else’s loan can hurt your ability to get other credit, even if you are the one to repay the debt (Your credit record will reflect it)

Find out how much money you might owe should the borrower default; since it can include late fees and legal fees.

Ask for written notification if the borrower is late with a payment.

Keep a copy of all loan documents.

Find out more information about how signing surety will affect you and what rights apply to you as the co-signer.

People should be careful of signing suretyship as you are taking responsibility for someone else’s debts. Familiarise yourself with the docu ments which you are signing. You should seek legal advice before taking on such a responsi bility in order to protect yourself.

For more information regarding suretyship, you can contact me at florian.ferris@liblink.co.za
