Anna Pino and Candice Edye have been in business together since 2014, but their story goes back to 2008. This is when their company, Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre Lighthouse , was formed. Originally, Lighthouse was set up as a public private partnership to assist Canberra businesses to achieve their growth potential, but in 2014 this partnership came to an end. Anna and Candice, who were employees of the company at the time, decided to purchase the company and it became fully independent.

where the partners challenge each other to be the best they can be they respect each other s different skills and they provide different perspectives on issues. Problems often arise in a partnership if one partner thinks they are doing more than the other or when the contributions each brings to the partnership are not equally valued.

Lesson learned Choose a business partner that shares your values and commitment, but who challenges you to be better.

Now, Lighthouse offers a number of innovative support programs to assist those with dreams of owning and running a business to achieve their goals. One of these programs is the ACT Microcredit Loan Program, a 3 way partnership between the ACT Government, Westpac Institutional Bank and Lighthouse. This program provides mentoring, low and no interest loans to eligible individuals. The program has seen people start and grow a diverse range of businesses from technology companies, to creative, health, professional and personal services businesses.

Anna and Candice share 8 of the life and business lessons they have learned from being in business themselves as well as the many businesses they have supported over the years.

2 Many people are reluctant to start a business because they feel that they don t have a unique idea. Your idea does not have to be original, in fact during the COVID 19 lockdown Anna and Candice point out that some of the ACT Microcredit clients that fared the best were traditional small businesses that provided essential services such as garden maintenance.

Many of the most successful business are based on building on something that already exists. The phone, car, computers, retail and hospitality.

Everything you ever wanted to know you could probably find in a book. Anna and Candice started the Lighthouse Business Book Club, a free peer discussion group for people in business earlier this year. The book club encourages people to find the time to invest in continuous learning and share the practical applications of different ideas by learning from each other.

Lesson learned Find your passion, focus on it and learn as much as you can about it. Risk comes from not knowing what you re doing.

Lesson learned You don t have to be a high tech company to be successful, just have a competitive advantage. This can be as simple as providing goods or services at either a lower price or in a more desirable fashion than your competitors.

Life and business will always have challenges, whether it s COVID 19 or something else. Many businesses literally survive from month to month with no buffer to deal with unexpected challenges. One strategy that can help you build a buffer is once you have made a sale, put the profit in a separate bank account. Pay your expenses from the remainder. This will very quickly give you information on whether your pricing structure and business model need a re think.

Lesson learned Live below your means, build a buffer and you will find it easier to bounce back after setbacks.

Being able to effectively communicate is a very important skill to develop both in business and in your private life. Getting your message across succinctly and being able to establish a connection with your audience is at the centre of any marketing strategy. At the very least you need to work out What is your story What makes your product or service different How does it improve the lives of your customers There are many avenues and channels that you can use to tell your story such as websites, social media, public speaking and more.

If you re paying a team of staff you ve no doubt heard of Single Touch Payroll, we first learnt this term back in 2018 and were checking the payroll software we were using was compliant.

Put simply, Single Touch Payroll is a report that goes between your payroll system and the ATO each pay, and it shares some data with them about what your employee has been paid.

The Government s plan was always to introduce this scheme in phases and the second phase will be introduced from 1 January 2022.

Phase 2 of Single Touch Payroll will simply capture more information in that report including Tax File Number Declaration you will no longer need to submit these forms separately to the ATO. Termination reasons when paying someone when they leave you Employment basis are they Full Time, Part Time, Casual etc.

Payment categories the types of payments you pay your employees will be further categorised to include salary packaging, working holiday makers, lump sum payments and more.

I The good news is your payroll software will do all the hard work for you. All you need to do is adjust your settings to ensure your STP reports are updated.

Even better news, some software companies have been granted a deferral so if you re a user of these systems you have a little more time to get up to date MYOB users can take advantage of their deferral until 1 January 2023.

Xero users can take advantage of their deferral until 31 December 2022.

But why not take this time as a chance to review the data in your payroll system and ensure everything is up to date ahead of the new year, such as Employee contact details emergency contact person.

Well, I bet you haven t thought of social media marketing this way before. I bet you didn t think that all the content and engagement on your social media pages could actually be worth some Does this create a bit of a game changer for you now regarding your viewpoint on social media If you were already a fan of social media, does this sweeten it even more But how is it worth money, you might ask Well, let me show you.

With Social Media Marketing, you can make people aware of your brand, products or services without them having even entered your store office. Then, you can actually collect data that will help you build warm audiences and determine which clients are likely more interested in your brand so that you can drive them to the point of conversion.

There is another side of social media that many people

My situation where someone else stole my IP is not usual in business, but it certainly is unusual in the health services sector.

As women I think sometimes we can be a little too trusting and open with people when we should be more aware that our ethics are not always the same as others. As a young entrepreneur, I think I was more guarded with my ideas and for me, I felt that this guarded approach had hindered my opportunity to partner with others to grow my business ideas. So I was trying to be more open.

Mostly, this award recognises that despite all of the challenges, what I have created in this technology is the opportunity for more people to be able to access effective trauma therapy no matter where they are in the world.

This is a great achievement and this award recognises the challenges that we overcame to get there.

In the next two years I will be transitioning this technology platform into a DIY service for clients to be able to get access to effective therapy, in their own time and at a reasonable cost. I want to ensure that all humans that experience community based trauma, be that bushfires or floods or any other natural disaster, will be able to access this platform to immediately reduce the impact of the traumatic event and ensure that these people can minimise the likelihood of developing a traumatic injury.

inspiration that fuels our businesses beginning, we soon discover we don t always have the capacity to keep investing the same amount of time and energy as we did at the start.

As our business takes on a life of its own, it keeps going and growing and so do we, sometimes for years without a break.

One of the key areas I see way too often in my mentoring and coaching clients is the old too much time in the business and not enough time on it .

People come with a long list of things they want to develop or plans they ve been dying to implement. They tell me they want to create just one more project and then they ll have a break .

They want to rip into the tasks and get results, and in business we all know we need to get results.

But often this rushing is a practice based on bad habits. Often there s a scarcity story running beneath the rush, one that says if we rest, we ll fall behind . or worse.

The truth is, as business owners, it s vital we rest and reconnect with ourselves and our inner vision for who we are and what we want to develop. It s vital we take time out and re assess our path and personal lives as we move our work life forward.

Summer holiday season is here Whether you are actually camping or just spending a lot of time outdoors including at the beach essential oils really come in handy for safe, effective first aid and well being support.

Make your own safe product

To repel insects such as mosquitoes, biting flies and fleas, apply this natural insect repellent as described below. You can use any combination of oils, as long as it stays within about 50 drops of oils. Other great oils for repelling insects include Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, and Rosemary.

50 drops essential oils I use Citronella, Tea

15ml bottle clove oil 280 drops

Tree, Lemon Eucalyptus and Lavender.

5ml cinnamon bark oil 80 drops

4 tablespoons carrier oil

cardamom oil 30 drops detergent Mix clove oil, cinnamon bark oil and cardamom oil in 400ml spray bottle with water and few drops of detergent, shake well and coat paths and walkways around outside and entrance of your tent or holiday cabin.

Best tip A drop of Cardamom Oil on cuffs of jeans on sneakers will deter nearby snakes when bushwalking. They move away from Cardamom because of the aroma.

This simple sunscreen helps protect and moisturize the skin. For fairer skin, use more essential oils for darker skin use less.

Blend the essential oils, then add the carrier oil in a dark glass bottle or jar. Rub the oils on skin by dabbing it on your wrists, behind your ears, inside your elbows, behind your knees, and around your ankles. Reapply after an hour or after swimming, exercise, etc. You can try adding some Aloe Vera gel to change the consistency of the oil and make it more spreadable.

You can also make this into a spray by substituting the carrier oil with either witch hazel or alcohol. Mix the essential oils with the witch hazel or alcohol and add to a 125ml glass spray bottle.Then top off with distilled water.

Shake well before use.

If you do get a sunburn, apply this soothing salve for instant, cooling relief.

20 drops essential oils I use Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Peppermint.

great here 1 1 2 tablespoons aloe vera gel Blend the essential oils, then add the carrier oil. Add the oil blend to the Aloe Vera gel in a clean dark glass jar. Apply generously to the affected areas. If making larger batches, it can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

If it s heat wave hot I have a hard, lunch sized cooler with a cold pack just for the oils when I am traveling or camping and know they may be left in the car or outside in the heat. The cold pack will keep them at a decent temp for 2 3 days depending on how much the cooler is left opened.

Achieving a sustainable health goal begins with self care and compassion and this requires presence. You must be present in your body to heal or to shape shift. Tune in to that voice inside, not the judge or gremlins who tell you you re not worthy, I mean further in, your inner voice that is being drowned out by those gremlins.

As much as we may need advice, education and support to achieve our health goals, it is also an inside job, one that requires listening to your intuition. To practice self care, it is important to know what you really need. This requires stillness, paying attention and listening to your body and your wise inner voice.

Self care today might be sleeping more, it might be getting up early and going for a walk, it might be eating more protein or drinking more water. It also could be sipping on a hot chocolate and filling in your journal or cancelling a meeting or arranging a catch up with a friend. If you tune into your needs, you will know what self care looks like for you at the time.

Many people disconnect from their body due to pain or trauma which is completely understandable and usually appropriate at the time, however this strategy does not usually serve us long term. If this is a real struggle for you, seek help from a mental health professional to support re connecting in a safe way for you.

It is really common to embark on a health goal from a negative place, disconnecting and hating yourself to health does not work you won t get healthier if only you abuse yourself enough. In fact, that puts your body into stress chemistry, which will ultimately work against your goals. The relationship you have with your body is the longest relationship you will ever have, it is a good idea to get to know your body and begin to have a healthy relationship with you. For many, if not all of us, this is a work in progress throughout of lives.

One of the hardest but most powerful and rewarding things you can do is to show up for yourself. Many of us have shown up for everyone else and said yes to everyone except ourselves. Now it is your turn, and when you step into yourself, you will automatically give permission for those around you to do the same.
