The Municipal Health Services (MHS) of the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) collaborated in an environmental awareness drive for World Environment Day. As part of our ongoing commitment to protect the public’s health and the environment, MHS participated in an effort to promote environmental responsibility in the Witzenberg region.
Our Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) in Ceres joined a local partnership initiative aimed at tackling environmental challenges, particularly the impact of illegal dumping in and around the town of Ceres. Illegal dumping is more than just an eyesore – it also contributes to the spread of diseases, creates breeding ground for pests and vermin, and places a significant financial and operational burden on municipal resources.
In response, the Ceres’ly Clean, Ceres’ly Green initiative was launched. This is a community-driven environmental project focused on raising awareness around environmental care and
promoting clean, healthy living spaces.
The initiative hosted its first community outreach in April – a clean-up campaign along the Dwarsriver. The momentum continued on 5 June 2025 when our EHPs and partners marked World Environment Day under the global theme of ‘Recycling’.
A community open day was organised, where about 80 residents from across Witzenberg visited the local municipality’s material recovery facility. This educational site visit helped raise awareness about sustainable waste practices.
The success of the event was made possible through collaboration with key local stakeholders, including the Witzenberg Municipality, Friends of the Museum, Ceres Tourism, and the Ceres Business Initiative.
World Environmental Day initiatives took place in other parts of our district too. Our EHPs in Drakenstein visited Butterfly House in Paarl where they led an engaging and interactive session with 89 children – sparking awareness around recycling, the importance of trees, and the essential practice of hand washing.
The Municipal Health Services continues to play a critical role in managing environmental risks by assessing and addressing the physical, chemical, and biological factors that impact community wellbeing. On this World Environment Day, we reaffirmed our commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment for all.

The CWDM believes that developing our youth to become skilled leaders will help our district grow and realise our vision of a unified Cape Winelands, excelling in sustainable development. One opportunity to achieve this is through an agreement with the organisation Landesverband Kinder- und Jugenderholungszentrum Sachsen-Anhalt e.V. (KiEZ) in Germany. Established in 1999, KiEZ aims to enhance democracy by developing youth leadership skills and fostering culturing understanding.
The learners and their three tour chaperones will be hosted in picturesque Gernrode, together with youth
groups from other countries. Their tour itinerary includes visits to various institutions, government bodies and attractions, as well as participating in numerous teambuilding games and exercises that contribute to international relationship building among the youth. One highlight on the itinerary each year is the exhibition at a ‘Motto Show’ where the learners will showcase South Africa, its traditions and culture through trinkets and samples of unique goods. Combined with presentations through music, song and dance, our intrepid travellers will present South Africa’s diverse cultures to the world.
The agreement between KiEZ and the CWDM aims to encourage tolerance and understanding between different cultures, develop individual leadership skills, broaden opinion, and enhance their sense of responsibility for their immediate environment and the world. This reflects the CWDM’s commitment to building a sustainable economy for the future.

Senior citizens from across the Cape Winelands District were buzzing with energy and excitement as they gathered at the Dal Josafat Athletics Stadium in Paarl on Thursday 22 May 2025 for the District Golden Games.
After a few days of rainy weather, the sun made a welcome appearance, which set the tone for a beautiful day ahead. The stand was filled with senior citizens – laughing, cheering, singing! It reminded us of high school interschool days, but this time it was seasoned legends participating.
These champs are ready to bring the heat and take their energy to the next level at the National Golden Games. This once again proves that age is just a number —and you’re never too old to compete, celebrate and be part of something amazing.
