Des vacances au coeur de la légende de l’Eiger

D

epuis le temps qu’on parcourt les domaines skiables des Alpes, on est ravi de revenir dans l’Oberland bernois ennobli par les magnifiques montagnes suisses.

C’est assez étonnant de constater que nombre de skieurs expérimentés, habitant dans les principales villes du pays (Zurich, Genève, Bâle) n’ont jamais eu l’idée de passer des vacances ici. Un lieu pourtant rendu célèbre par les montagnes de l’Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau et la légendaire descente du Lauberhorn !

Si vous en faites partie, un bon conseil, commencez à planifier votre voyage parce que pour tout passionné de tourisme en montagne, cet endroit est immanquable.

Grindelwald et Wengen sont les deux points de chute principaux.

D’un côté Grindelwald, urbaine et vivante. De l’autre Wengen, intime et montagnarde. A vous de choisir ou bien de répartir votre séjour entre les deux. (A notre avis c’est le plus intéressant à faire).

Holidays at the heart of the Eiger Legend

C

onsidering how long we’ve been exploring ski areas in the Alps, we are delighted to return to the Bernese Highlands which are embellished by the magnificent Swiss mountains.

It’s pretty amazing to see that many experienced skiers living in the country’s main cities (Zurich, Geneva, Basel) have never thought of spending their holidays here. It is nevertheless a region famous for its mountains, such as the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau and the legendary Lauberhorn downhill run!

If you’re one of those people, here’s a good tip : start planning your trip because this spot is a must-visit for any enthusiast of mountain tourism.

Grindelwald and Wengen are the two principal places to stay.

On one side, we have Grindelwald which is urban and lively. On the other, there’s Wengen, which is cosy and alpine.

It’s up to you, or you can divide your stay between both. (In our opinion, this is the most appealing option).

Hôtel Aspen (Grindelwald) Un hôtel comme on les aime, alliant chaleur montagnarde et design.

Il se trouve à quelques kilomètres du village, directement sur les pistes, mais la route qui vous y amène est parfaitement dégagée et en prime un service de navette est disponible.

Les chambres offrent toutes une vue imprenable sur les montagnes environnantes. Elles sont décorées avec goût et matériaux nobles (pierre, cuir et bois).

On dispose en plus d’un très bel espace bien-être, avec une zone nudiste. Ce qui est habituel dans la culture germanique, mais peut surprendre les non initiés !

A noter le grand jacuzzi extérieur jouissant d’une vue splendide... On adore.

Le restaurant vaut également le détour. (cf. Où manger).

The hotel is located a few kilometres from the village, right on the slopes, but the road leading you there is completely clear and, as a bonus, a shuttle service is available.

All the rooms provide a clear view over the surrounding mountains.

They are decorated with taste and high-quality materials (stone, leather and wood).

In addition, there is a really lovely well-being area with a nudist zone.

This is standard in German culture but might come as a surprise to the uninitiated!

Note that the large outdoor Jacuzzi enjoys a splendid view… We love it.

Joli établissement à vocation familiale, à la décoration intérieure traditionnelle, simple, sans surcharges. Comme c’est souvent le cas en Suisse allemande, deux lits single accolés font office de lit deux places. Certes, ce n’est

pas le rêve pour un voyage de noces !

L’hôtel est géré avec le sourire par Caroline Ogi... fille du charismatique ex conseiller fédéral Adolf Ogi. Le restaurant 1903 est aussi de qualité. (cf. Où manger).

This pretty hotel is family-orientated and has simple traditional interior design with no excesses. As is often the case in German-speaking Switzerland, two single beds beside each other serve as a double bed. For sure, this isn’t exactly ideal for a honeymoon !

The hotel is managed with a smile by Caroline Ogi… daughter of the charismatic ex-federal councillor Adolf Ogi. Restaurant 1903 is also first-rate. (cf. Where to eat).

Il est véritablement fait pour les amoureux de montagne et de quiétude.

C’est en quittant la Kleine Sheidegge en direction de Wengen, sur la piste qui longe le chemin de fer que vous le trouverez, loin du village et à 1900m. Ce lieu date de 1865.

Il est hors du temps et fait face aux parois Nord de l’Eiger.

Les parties communes et les chambres ont conservé l’atmosphère d’antan. C’est quasi féerique. Même si vous n’y logez pas, allez y faire un tour. Cela vaut le coup d’œil.

Here, we’ve discovered a real little gem. The hotel is truly perfect for people who love the mountains and tranquillity.

As you leave Kleine Scheidegg for Wengen, you’ll come to the hotel on the track running alongside the railway line, far from the village and at 1,900m. altitude. The hotel dates from 1865. It is timeless and is opposite the Eiger’s north face.

The communal areas and rooms have retained an atmosphere of yesteryear. It’s almost otherworldly. Even if you’re not staying there, go and check it out anyway. It’s worth a lookaround. The restaurant is excellent too. (cf. Where to eat).

Les plats sont basés sur la tradition locale, c’est-à-dire des viandes préparées sans

recherche particulière, mais goûteuses à souhait. (C’est parfois mieux ainsi !).

You’ll find this traditionally-decorated restaurant in the centre of the village. It is frequented by a cosmopolitan clientele.

Dishes are based on local tradition, that is to say, meat prepared without any particular fastidiousness, but which is incredibly flavoursome. (Sometimes, it’s better that way !)

Situé pratiquement à l’arrivée de la piste de Lauberhorn (bien pratique), cet établissement mérite une visite pendant votre séjour pour la qualité de ses mets traditionnels et son service souriant.

This restaurant is located almost at Lauberhorn’s downhill finish point (very useful) and is worth visiting during your stay due to the excellence of its traditional dishes and service which comes with a smile.

Chez Meyers Hôtel Regina - Wengen On ne peut pas passer à côté tant cet hôtel de style victorien datant de 1894 domine le village. A l’intérieur on est transporté dans une époque où le tourisme d ‘hiver était réservé à l’élite aristocratique.

La salle est lumineuse. Vous êtes fin prêts pour une expérience gustative menée de main de maître par le chef Mickaël Cochet (ancien disciple de Marc Veyrat). Les plats sont travaillés avec subtilité, et subliment la fine fleur des produits régionaux.

Cuisson parfaite des viandes bien évidemment.

You can’t miss this Victorian-style hotel dating back to 1894 as it really dominates the village. Inside, you are transported back to an era when winter tourism was reserved for the aristocratic élite.

The dining room is nice and bright. You’re good and ready for a gourmet experience Cochet (a former student of Marc Veyrat).

The meals are prepared with subtlety and enhance the finest regional produce.

Naturally, the meat is cooked to perfection.

LÜTSCHENTAL ’il n’y avait qu’une seule piste à faire (et à refaire ), c’est bien le mythique Lauberhorn. Une descente légendaire de la coupe du monde que tout athlète a un

jour rêvé de remporter.

En partant de la maisonette au départ (photo obligatoire !), vous descendez une piste technique mais accesible si vous l’affrontez avec calme.

Il y a 1200m de denivelé que les stars du circuit blanc avalent en 2’30 mais qu’un bon skieur, sans se presser, mettra 20 mn à descendre. De quoi vivre un moment magique. Et un beau défi !

Fabuleusement impressionnant, le fameux passage sous le pont du train... On se rend compte qu’il est incroyablement étroit et quand on pense qu’en compétition il est pris à 120km /h, là pas le droit à l’erreur !

L’arrivée à Wengen se fait directement dans le stade, avec les cabines des télévisions toujours en place. Belles sensations !

Du côté Grindelwald, plusieurs pistes rouges descendent de la Kleine Sheidegg Scheidegg jusqu’en bas du village.

Précision importante pour les hôtes de l’hôtel Aspen, il faut bien repérer la piste qui part de Männlichen. A ce propos, le téléphérique qui dessert cette piste meriterait bien une rénovation.

There’s 1,200m. of difference in height which skiing stars of the slopes devour in 2 minutes thirty seconds. However, a good skier who’s not in a hurry will take around 20 minutes to ski down, guaranteeing a magical experience… and a real challenge!

What’s so amazingly awe-inspiring is the notorious passage under the railway bridge. You realise just how incredibly narrow it is and when you consider that skiers go through here at 120 km/h in a race, there’s no room for error !

From the Grindelwald side, there are several red runs descending the Kleine Scheidegg going down to the bottom of village.

An important note for guests staying at Hotel Aspen : you need to pinpoint the slope which starts at Männlichen. Whilst on this topic, the INTERLAKEN WEST INTERLAKEN cable car slope could do with renovation.

n ne vient pas en ces lieux pour l’ambiance et la vie nocturne debridée mais le village n’est pas exempt de spots sympathiques pour se détendre et boire un verre.

Chaleureux et décontractés, le Tipi bar (Kleine Scheidegg) ou le Rancher (piste 22), et le plus stylé, le bar extérieur de l’hôtel Aspen.

A Wengen tout le monde s’arrête au bar proche de l’école de ski ou au Tanne Bar. A Grindelwald, en soirée, on se dirigera vers l’Espresso bar (Spinne Hôtel ) ou au Gepsi (Eiger Hôtel ) qui offre aussi un magnifique cigar lounge.

Côté clubs, The Mescalero (Spinne Hôtel). Mais comme dans toute station de ski, en dehors des vacances scolaires et du week-end vous risquez de vous sentir un peu seuls sur le dance floor !

In Wengen, everyone stops by at the bar near the skiing school or the Tanne Bar. In the evening in Grindelwald, you can head for the Espresso Bar (Hotel Spinne) or the Gepsi (Eiger Hotel) which also provides a superb cigar lounge.

As for clubs, there’s the Mescalero (Hotel Spinne). But as in any ski resort, outside of school holidays and the weekend, you might feel a little bit alone on the dancefloor !

ncontournable mais cher (à peu près 100 chf /80 euros), la montée en train par le chemin de fer le plus haut d’Europe jusqu’au Jungfraujoch à 3454m. On le surnomme «le toit de l’Europe «. Là-haut la vue est époustouflante les jours de beau temps.Quant à nous, nous sommes tombés sur un jour de tempête. ..et c’était tout aussi spectaculaire.

Sur place on peut visiter le musée, le palais des glaces, et envoyer une carte postale avec LE timbre de ce lieu unique.

train ride on the highest railway in Europe up to Jungfraujoch at 3454m. is a ‘must’ although expensive (around 100 Chf / 80 Euros). The mountain is nicknamed “The Roof of Europe.” Up there, the view is breathtaking on fine days. As for us, we went on a stormy day… and it was equally spectacular!

Locally, you can visit the museum, the Ice Palace, and send a postcard with this unique place’s postage stamp.

Le SUV à l’accent italien

C

es derniers temps des marques de prestige telles que Jaguar, Bentley et Maserati se sont lancées dans le marché en pleine expansion des Sport Utility Vehicles de luxe. Disons-le franchement, le design de Maserati est celui qui nous a le plus séduits.

La ligne est splendide et la calandre avant spectaculaire avec son trident central étincelant. Cette voiture à la stature imposante, ne fait pas moins de cinq mètres et pèse 2200kg. Mais elle réussit le tour de force de rester majestueuse et racée.

A L’INTÉRIEUR On retrouve bien sûr la noblesse des matériaux qui sont la marque des berlines et GT de la maison. Et la Levante n’a rien à envier aux stars allemandes.

La sellerie est de toute beauté tout comme l’insert en fibre de carbone. Quelques éléments en plastique cachés du regard ne déparent en rien la beauté et l’harmonie de l’ensemble. Elle offre amplitude et grand confort pour quatre personnes, et bien évidemment le grand « touch screen » central aisément maniable assure la qualité multimedia à laquelle on peut s’attendre. A noter, Maserati s’est associé à Ermenegildo Zegna, l’une des principales marques de prêt-à-porter de luxe pour hommes dans le monde, qui se marie à merveille avec son style !

SENSATIONS DE CONDUITE L’impression extérieure de sportivité, dans le DNA de Maserati, se confirme au volant avec une précision et une sensation de tenue de route qui ressemblent plus à ceux d’une berline que d’un SUV. Nous avons pu tester le V6 Diesel (275CV), qui n’apas tout à fait la même qualité d’accélération et de réactivité que la version essence avec ses 475 CV. C’est celle-ci que l’on vous conseille vous l’aurez compris.

La boîte de vitesse automatique à 8 rapports est rapide et fluide. La Levante n’est certes pas faite pour des raids dans le désert mais, grâce à ses amortisseurs hydrauliques, et se débrouille très bien en dehors des sentiers battus. Une belle réussite pour une première !

Lately, prestigious brands, such as Jaguar, Bentley and Maserati have ventured into the booming luxury Sport Utility Vehicles market.

Let’s be frank. We found the design of the Maserati to be the most appealing. It has splendid lines and the front radiator grill with its sparkling

central trident is spectacular. This car of impressive stature measures no less than five metres and weighs in at 2,200 kg. However, somehow it manages the amazing feat of remaining majestic and streamlined.

INTERIORS Obviously, we see that the materials used are top-class which is the hallmark of saloon cars and GTs made by the firm. The Levante is every bit as good as the German stars of the car industry. The upholstery is exquisite as is the carbon fibre insert. Some plastic components hidden out of sight do not mar the beauty and harmony of the overall look in any way. The car provides space and great comfort for four people. Naturally, the large central touchscreen is easy to use and offers the sort of high quality multimedia facilities you’d expect. Something worth noting is that Maserati has joined forces with Ermenegildo Zegna, one of the leading luxury ready-to-wear menswear brands in the world. The two blend their styles wonderfully!

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE The exterior impression of sportiness, which is in Maserati’s DNA, is confirmed at the wheel with the precise road holding which feels more like a saloon car than an SUV. We tested the V6 Diesel version (275 bhp) which doesn’t quite have the same calibre of acceleration and responsiveness as the petrol version with 475 bhp. This latter is the one we would recommend to you, as you’d imagine. The 8-speed automatic gearbox is swift and smooth. The Levante is certainly not made for treks into the desert, but it does very well off the beaten track thanks to its hydraulic shock absorbers.

Il était une fois en amérique...

E

n Europe, la Cadillac évoque invariablement la longue berline qui sillonne les routes dans les films hollywoodiens, et pour certains la fameuse Cadillac du « Corniaud », qui faisait rêver le Français moyen. Aujourd’hui, ce design a un peu vieilli et le concept de grosse cylindrée, peu écologique, est

associé à une forte consommation d’essence. Mais l’entreprise de Detroit n’a pas dit son dernier mot. Malgré un réseau relativement limité de revendeurs européens, elle sort un SUV qui fraye son chemin parmi les rois du genre que sont les Allemands et les Japonais. Et le résultat est encourageant.

Une structure forcément massive, mais une silhouette qui au final nous séduit par sa ligne dynamique et stylisée, notamment grâce aux somptueux phares avant, en forme de boomerang, et à la sensation d’affinement que les lignes latérales qui courent jusqu’au bout des portes arrière donnent.

A L’INTÉRIEUR On comprend en pénétrant à l’intérieur de l’habitacle, que le constructeur a joué la carte du raffinement, de l’espace, et des finitions parfaites et que cela saura séduire les clients les plus exigeants. Le cuir et la fibre de carbone se marient à merveille et l’assise est extrêmement confortable. Il est à noter que le modèle que nous avons essayé, avec son toit en verre qui éclaire l’espace intérieur, ajoute une touche d’éclat à l’ensemble.L’écran central de navigation et de divertissement offre un audio magnifique pour les mélomanes. Par ailleurs, selon nous, le graphisme du navigateur est perfectible.

SENSATIONS DE CONDUITE Le V6 3,6 L ne brille certes pas par la vitesse de son accélération mais une fois une certaine vitesse acquise, on resent la qualité de sa tenue de route.

C’est probablement un stigmate de son pedigree américain, où on conduit souvent « peinard » sur de larges autoroutes ! La consommation n’a rien de modérée comme on pouvait s’en douter, mais un effort est fait dans le sens d’une économie à la pompe, avec la désactivation temporaire des cylindres à régime constant et la coupure à l’arrêt.

n Europe, the Cadillac invariably conjures up the long saloon car which roams the roads in Hollywood movies; and for some the famous Cadillac in the French-Italian comedy film, “The Sucker,” which was the stuff of dreams for the average French person. Today, that design has dated somewhat

and the concept of a huge, eco-unfriendly engine is now associated with heavy petrol consumption. However, the Detroit firm hasn’t had its last say.

Despite a relatively limited network of European dealers, it’s bringing out an SUV which is blazing its trail amongst the German and Japanese leaders in the market segment. And the result is encouraging.It certainly has a massive structure but we end up being drawn to its silhouette due to its dynamic and stylised lines and gorgeous boomerang-shaped headlights in particular. There’s also the sense of streamlining given by lateral lines running past the back doors to the rear of the car.

INTERIORS As soon as we get into the cockpit, we can see that the manufacturer has played the card of sophistication, space, and perfect fit and finish. This will appeal to even the most demanding customers. Leather and carbon fibre combine marvellously and the seats are extremely comfortable. It should be noted that the model we tried out has a glass roof which brightens up the interior area, adding a touch of sparkle to everything. The central navigation and entertainment screen provides fantastic audio quality for music lovers. However, in our opinion, the sat nav’s graphics could be improved.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE The V6 3.6 L is certainly not exceptional for acceleration but once you’ve reached a certain speed, you can feel its excellent road holding.

This is probably as a result of its American pedigree. In the States, people often drive down big highways in comfort and ease ! There’s nothing restrained about its petrol consumption as you might have guessed, but they have made an effort at fuel economy with the Auto Stop-Start feature when stopped in traffic; and Active Fuel Management which temporarily deactivates some engine cylinders when running at constant revs.

Il y a du vrai biensûr, mais séjourner dans cette station, c’est expérimenter bien plus que cela.

Pour commencer un domaine skiable spectaculaire tant par la qualité de ses installations, que par la variété et la longueur des pistes.

Nous qui avons tourné dans presque toutes les stations d’Europe, classons ce domaine, relié aux Trois Vallées, dans notre top five.

Et si vous pouvez vous le permettre, vous trouverez ici des hôtels extraordinaires et des restaurants super étoilés qui réjouiront les plus fins gastronomes. Mais rassurez-vous, même un budget plus léger vous permettra d’accéder à de charmants hébergements et restaurants abordables, avec un bon rapport qualité/prix.

La station se déploie autour de cinq villages : Saint-Bon-Tarentaise (chef-lieu communal), Courchevel Le Praz (Courchevel 1300 avant 2011), Courchevel Village (anciennement Courchevel 1550), Courchevel Moriond (l’ancien Courchevel 1650) et enfin Courchevel (ancien Courchevel 1850).

La règle est que les tarifs montent avec l’altitude jusqu’à Courchevel tout court, centre nerveux du domaine. Sachant que tous les villages sont parfaitement reliés aux pistes, il ne vous reste plus qu’à choisir ce qui vous convient le mieux.

Un point à préciser est que Courchevel a été bâti après la seconde guerre mondiale. Ce n’est donc pas à l’atmosphère d’un petit village savoyard qu’il faut s’attendre. Mais une fois installé, on ressent la pulsation d’un haut-lieu des passionnés de sports d’hiver. L’essayer c’est l’adorer !

There’s truth in this, of course, but staying at this resort means experiencing a lot more than that.

To start with, there’s a ski area which is spectacular due both to its excellent facilities and the variety and length of its slopes. We have toured practically every European resort and we rank this ski area, linked with Trois Vallées, in our Top Five.

Also, if you can afford it, you’ll find some incredible hotels and fantastic “starred” restaurants here which will delight the most discerning of gourmets.

However, rest assured, even with a lower budget you’ll still be able to stay in lovely accommodation and eat at affordable restaurants, which provide good value-for-money.

The resort spreads out over five villages: Saint-Bon-Tarentaise (capital of the district), Courchevel Le Praz (called Courchevel 1300 before 2011), Courchevel Village (formerly Courchevel 1550), Courchevel Moriond (the former Courchevel 1650) and finally Courchevel (the former Courchevel 1850).

The rule is that prices rise with altitude until you get to the single name, Courchevel, the area’s nerve centre. Remember that all the villages enjoy excellent links to the slopes, so all you need do is choose the one that suits you best.

One thing to point out is that Courchevel was built after the Second World War. So, you shouldn’t expect the atmosphere of a small Savoyard village. However, once you’re settled in, you can feel the pulse of this hot spot for winter sports enthusiasts.

It takes its name from the wood “mélèze” (larch) which is omnipresent in the lobby and the simple, bright rooms. It would seem that the aroma from this tree aids relaxation... We’ll let you try it out. The spa, renovated in 2017, is a real success.

Les Neiges discutablement l’un des établissements les plus élégants de la station. Son originalité tient à sa touche métropolitaine. As a newcomer to Courchevel’s collection of luxury hotels, Les Neiges is indisputably one of the resort’s most elegant establishments. Its originality lies in its metropolitan style. Lamps which are out-of-the-ordinary in Alpine interior design, lend the communal areas a sort of “urban chic” vibe. There’s no doubt that this would appeal to a young, city-dwelling clientele who enjoy this “electricity.”

Next to the altiport, you’ll find those most suitable for beginner to intermediate skiers.

For those who are proficient at skiing, you can go to the top of the Saulire cable car run and from there you can ski over to Méribel and come back down taking the run of the same name to the village, without taking a ski lift. A delight !

From that place, there’s also the starting point of one of the trickiest black runs in the Alps : Le Grand Couloir. This is strictly for truly excellent skiers, especially when the snow is hard. Big thrills guaranteed !

Le front de neige est plein de bars très vivants le soir venu et naturellement l’option la plus cosy et élégante des bars des hôtels de luxe est toujours une garantie de qualité. Plus vivant, spécialement après dîner, La Mangeoire, toujours très fréquenté à la nuit tombée, surtout pour boire un verre et si vous n’avez pas de problèmes de budget.

Dans un autre registre le Schuss Café est un endroit au décor chaleureux et sympathique où venir manger quelques tapas au coucher du soleil. Vous pouvez aussi y dîner et vous régaler avec d’excellents hamburgers.

Si le ski n’est pas votre activité prioritaire, vous pourrez continuer votre nuit à L’Arc, la discothèque la plus courue (anciennement Les Caves, rendez-vous du tout-Courchevel).

Mais le Kameha est sans doute l’un des plus étonnants qu’il nous ait été donné de découvrir et la chance d’y séjourner fut une expérience hors du commun.

Situé dans la périphérie dynamique de Zürich (Glattpark), proche de l’aéroport de Kloten mais un peu moins du centre-ville, le Kameha vaut la peine d’être connu, ne serait-ce que pour y prendre un verre ou dîner.

ver the past few years, we’ve had the chance to visit hundreds of hotels across Europe.

However, the Kameha is without doubt one of the most amazing hotels we have ever come across and staying there was an extraordinary experience.

The Kameha is located in the buzzing outskirts of Zürich (Glattpark), near Kloten Airport and slightly further away from the city centre. It is worth knowing about, if only to go there for a drink or dinner.

ife is Grand. Dès que vous arrivez à proximité de ce bâtiment inclassable, sa façade vous accroche avec cette devise qui s’accorde avec son style mi siège bancaire mi fondation futuriste. Fascination, curiosité, tout vous pousse à y entrer.

Kameha ne se veut pas -et il n l’est pas!-un hôtel comme les autres. C’est un voyage plein de surprises qui vous attendent au tournant. On le doit au designer Marcel Wanders qui a réalisé un coup de maître.

Dès l’entrée, dans le hall, le regard est attiré par de grandes cloches stylisées (on est bien en Suisse !)... et le grand escalier.

On trouvera au même niveau un grand bar et un « Smoker’s Lounge » très chic .

Le Kameha offre aussi deux restaurants, que nous n’avons pas pu tester pour vous mais il y a de bonnes chances qu’ils soient au diapason. L’Unico, aux saveurs italiennes, et le You, étoilé Michelin, axé cuisine inventive française.

This is in harmony with its architectural style which lies halfway between a bank headquarters and a futuristic foundation. Fascination, curiosity… everything impels you to go in.

The Kameha doesn’t claim to be a hotel like any other – and it isn’t! It is a journey full of surprises which await you around every corner. This is all down to the designer, Marcel Wanders, who has really pulled off a master stroke.

In the entrance lobby, your attention is drawn to the large stylised bells (we’re definitely in Switzerland!)… and the grand staircase.

This is also where you’ll find a large bar and an extremely chic Smoker’s Lounge.

The Kameha has two restaurants which we weren’t able to try out for you but there’s every chance that they’ll be in keeping with the hotel. There is L’Unico which offers Italian flavours, and the Michelin-starred You, which focuses on inventive French cuisine.

Mais ce sont les onze Suites qui sortent véritablement de l’ordinaire et valent le détour. Chacune d’elles possède un thème et vous emmène dans son univers.

Diva Suite, Gentleman Suite (avec une table roulette casino remplaçant la table classique), Workout Suite (dédiée au sportifs) avec tapis de course et haltères à votre disposition... jusqu’à arriver à la Space Suite ... directement inspirée des films de science- fiction. Et ainsi de suite...

Pour parfaire le tout, un spa vous attend au dernier étage pour terminer la journée dans le bien-être et le délassement après une journée de shopping ou de business dans Zürich « downtown » !

The 245 rooms are uncluttered, elegant, and flawless with excellent bed-linen. However, the eleven Suites are the ones which really stand out and are worth the detour. Each one has a theme and transports you into its realm.

Dans cette atmosphère, chaque jour en fin d’après-midi un concert est donné (entre 16 h et 18 h) avec vins et sélection de fromages offerts aux clients. Le déjeuner est copieux et préparé avec des produits de qualité.

As soon as you go through the front door, you immediately feel as if you’ve stepped into a relaxing bath with, amazingly enough, Iberian fragrances… Indeed, the area formed by the bar and breakfast space is a lovely patio completely covered by a large glass roof so the sky is an integral part of your meal experience, whatever the temperature.

In the hall, you’ll see straightaway that the hotel’s dominating theme is music. You’ll see a magnificent, uniquely-shaped piano and, on the marble floor, a depiction of a keyboard.

In this musical ambience, there is a concert every day towards the end of the afternoon (between 4 and 6 p.m.) with wine and a selection of cheese provided to guests. Dinner is hearty and prepared with high-quality produce.

udapest has to be one of our favourite capital cities, divided in two by the Danube with the old historic town (Buda) on one side, and the more modern and festive part on the other side (Pest). Both are well worth several days of exploration.

To do this, the ideal thing is to stay in a hotel in the centre, preferably on the Pest side if you want to feel the beating heart of nightlife in the Hungarian capital, by going out in the evening on foot.

laine, c’est un peu comme ces gâteaux faits maison, qui ne sont pas les plus appétissants au premier coup d’œil mais qui s’avèrent délicieux.

Alors voilà, notre première impression de cette station de Haute-Savoie a été plutôt mitigée, car sa construction volontairement bétonnée surprend à première vue et, finalement, quelques jours plus tard, nous avons commencé à apprécier de plus en plus les lieux et notre opinion a complètement changé.

Parfois, il faut savoir passer le cap des apparences pour savourer ce qui mérite de l’être…

Pour vous situer, Flaine fait partie du domaine du Grand Massif, étendu et varié avec 146 km de pistes.

Ce massif bénéficie d’un formidable enneigement malgré une altitude au sommet relativement faible (2500m) ce qui permet une longue saison pour le domaine skiable.

Et ce qui nous a vraiment enchantés, c’est l’absence totale de véhicules au centre. On se promène à pied en oubliant pour un temps la routine du trafic, en osmose avec la nature.

Pour se vider la tête et se ressourcer, « what else ? ».

So, there you have it – our first impression of this resort in Haute Savoie is fairly luke-warm because the way it’s been built deliberately in concrete comes as a surprise at first. However, a few days later, we began to appreciate the place more and before long our opinion changed completely.

Sometimes, you have to get over appearances to enjoy something which is merit-worthy…

To give you an idea of where it is, Flaine is part of the vast and varied Grand Massif ski area with 146 km of slopes.

The massif has fantastic snow cover despite a relatively low peak altitude of 2,500m. This means the ski area has a long season.

And what really enchanted us was the total absence of vehicles in the centre of the resort. For a time, you walk around in harmony with nature forgetting the usual traffic. You might ask yourself, ‘what could be better to empty your head and recharge your batteries ?’.

Hôtel Terminal Neige - Totem Le choix était restreint mais nous avons déniché un petit bijou. Là encore, les abords sont austères et bétonnés, mais entrez donc. Le design créatif et dynamique, insérant habilement des éléments vintage seventies n’a rien de banal.Et en prime, le hall, le restaurant et le lounge sont baignés de lumière grâce à une grande baie vitrée.

La déco des chambres est minimaliste mais chaleureuse. Des murs parés de street art, des meubles en châtaignier, des tissus aux couleurs vives. Une atmosphère très agréable à vivre.

Un conseil. Dans la mesure du possible, réservez plutôt une chambre catégorie club pour un espace plus confortable.

Quant au loft de 150m2, non seulement son prix est très raisonnable comparé à ce qu’il coûterait dans d’autres stations, surtout hors de la très haute saison, mais c’est aussi un lieu idéal pour fêter un anniversaire, un mariage, ou tout évènement qui le mérite.

De plus, une équipe particulièrement sympathique et disponible vous accueille, et le responsable du magasin ski est compétent.

Bonus. Un espace bien-être avec une petite piscine extérieure chauffée, idéale pour se détendre après une journée de ski.

There was a limited choice but we unearthed a little gem. Here, once again, the surrounding area is austere and made from concrete - but just go in ! The creative, dynamic design, which skilfully incorporates vintage Seventies’ elements, is anything but ordinary. And, as a bonus, the hall, restaurant and lounge are bathed in light thanks to a large picture window.

The rooms’ interior decoration is minimalist but warm. The walls are adorned with “street art,” the furniture is made from chestnut, and fabrics are in bright colours. All this makes it a very pleasant place to be.

A tip: insofar as it is possible, try to book rooms in the Club category which offer more comfort and space.

As for the 150 square metre Loft, not only is it very reasonably priced compared to similar accommodation at other resorts, especially outside peak season, but it’s also the ideal place to celebrate a birthday, wedding or any other fitting occasion.

What’s more, a particularly nice, on-hand team welcomes you, and the manager of the ski shop is well-informed.

A bonus is the well-being area which has a small outdoor heated pool perfect for relaxing after a day skiing.

e domaine de Flaine, comme on l’a dit, est vaste et varié, adapté à tous les niveaux de ski.

Pour les skieurs chevronnés, il y a les rouges Faust et Amandine. Ces deux pistes partent du sommet pour arriver jusqu’en bas, avec un dénivelé de 900 mètres. Sur l’Amandine, attention à la deuxième partie lorsque l’enneigement est faible. En fin de journée, on peut trouver dans la descente des pierres et de belles bosses !

Quant aux skieurs moins sportifs, ils auront le choix entre la bleue Cristal ou la Serpentine (à gauche sur le plan), qui les amènera tranquillement au départ du DMC (télécabine) des Grandes Platières.

Petit inconvénient. La DMC est la principale télécabine du domaine pour grimper au sommet, et la plupart des skieurs l’empruntent en début de journée. Les temps d’attente peuvent alors paraître longs pour les impatients.

he Flaine ski area is, as we said, vast, varied and suitable for all levels of skiing expertise.

For seasoned skiers, there are the red Faust and Almandine runs. These two slopes begin at the summit and end right at the bottom with a difference in altitude of 500 metres. On the Almandine run, watch out for the second half when there is light snow cover. At the end of the day, you might find stones and some nice bumps on the slope!

When it comes to less sporty skiers, they can choose between the blue Cristal and Serpentine runs (on the left of the map). These will take them down at a leisurely pace to the Grandes Platières DMC (cable car) base station.

One small drawback: the DMC is the main cable car in the ski area to take you up to the summit and most skiers take it at the beginning of the day. Waiting times might seem rather protracted for the more impatient of you.

Val d’Isère, with its village at the bottom of the slopes at 1,800 m. and its ski area which exceeds 3,000 m. in altitude, enjoys ideal snow cover until spring. This is already a good reason to go there for your last ski descents of the season.

For example, the type who says, if I put on a helmet, it’s not because I’m mundane; it’s because I take risks! For women who like to retain their glamour on the slopes with their silky hair blowing in the wind, protecting their head in black plastic armour has been more of a constraining process. It’s a bit like a bathing cap at the swimming pool, isn’t it? Manufacturers have come to understand the issues involved and developed the product accordingly from being a solely protective item to creating astonishing, sophisticated aesthetics, using high-quality materials, such as carbon fibre and leather. When a helmet becomes an appearance-transforming accessory, price is the consequence. Base prices are pretty high but over several years the investment’s worth it. While it’s true that leading manufacturers have made an effort with appearance (Utex, POC, Oakley, etc.), certain brands deserve to be in the spotlight.

Families who live in all corners of the world or who travel a lot, often feel the need to come together in a welcoming place which is like a delightful, cosy, luxury home. This alternative to the family house rejuvenates the ambience and sets the scene for some great times to cherish.

Le Grand-Bornand (F) Le Chalet 1864, situé dans l’adorable petite station de Grand Bornand en Haute-Savoie, est de ces lieux. Idéal pour se retrouver dans une ambiance détendue.

On le découvre au fin fond d’une petite vallée à environ dix minutes en voiture du centre du village. De quoi se sentir loin de toute agitation, et proche de la paix qu’apporte la montagne. En hiver, un 4X4 sera obligatoire pour y parvenir, mais une fois sur place, vous disposerez d’un chauffeur privé qui vous amènera le matin au pied des pistes, puis vous ramènera.

Le Chalet 1864, avec ses six chambres, dont une suite très spacieuse, se veut aussi un hôtel de charme, facilement privatisable par une (grande) famille ou un groupe d’amis. Une certaine indépendance pourra être très appréciable, car le chalet est réparti sur trois bâtiments.

Chalet 1864, which is located in the adorable small resort of Grand Bornand in Haute-Savoie, is one of these places. It’s perfect for getting together in a relaxed atmosphere.

You’ll find it right at the bottom of a little valley around ten minutes’ drive from the village centre. This will make you feel far from all hustle and bustle and close to the peace and quiet of the mountains. In winter, a 4x4 is required to get there but once you arrive, you’ll have a private chauffeur who’ll take you to the foot of the slopes in the morning and then bring you back later on.

With its six bedrooms including a very spacious suite, Chalet 1864 is also intended to be a boutique hotel, which can easily be privately hired by a (large) family or a group of friends. A certain degree of independence can be highly useful because the chalet is spread out over three buildings.

The suite is the centrepiece of the whole complex with its 110 square metres, consisting of two bedrooms and a vast living room provided with a fireplace and a balcony as you would quite rightly expect. This is the place where people get together in a setting of sculptural raw timber, combining beauty, cosiness and simplicity. This is perhaps what one would call natural charm which can be found in every detail for that matter.

This is the icing on the cake. Set high up and accessed by a stone track, the farm’s former stables have been converted into this complex, dedicated to well-being.

What a marvellous thing it is to unwind in the swimming pool as you gaze out through the vast picture windows at the Aravis mountain range! To top it all off, there is a large terrace and hammam.

On n’y trouvera pas les traditionnelles recettes savoyardes (mais que l’on apprécie bien, non ?), mais des créations réalisées par le chef Nicolas Bianchetti qui utilise des produits exquis avec brio.

A noter. Le rapport qualité/prix est excellent. Un jeune chef à suivre de près.

Note that they provide excellent value for money. It’s definitely worth following what this young chef does.

Longines has not finished delving into its past. In the 1950’s Longines supplied watches to the Swiss national airline, Swissair. These timepieces had a very distinctive 24-hour dial. Roger Dubuis, founder in 1995 of the firm that bears his name, passed away in October, 2017, at the age of eighty, and that was an important turning point for this large company.
