haque année, c’est la même attente, la même impatience de la voir arriver. Avec le changement climatique, elle se fait désirer, arrive un peu en retard. En décembre, elle n’est pas vraiment là. Elle joue les absentes. Elle, notre star de l’hiver, notre grand amour de la saison froide …la neige. Dommage pour la poésie de cette blancheur lumineuse qui va si bien avec les sapins de Noël. Et de ne pouvoir descendre que des pistes vertes rendues skiables par les enneigeurs.
Quand enfin les premiers flocons arrivent, on est pris sous le charme et la joie. En montagne ou en ville, on est comme des enfants. La neige, comme de la ouate, atténue les bruits, leur puissance agressive. Elle semble nous protéger, nous apaiser, et nous inviter. Elle est l’indispensable partenaire des passionnés de ski, avec ses pistes qui ne demandent qu’à être dévalées, avec du matériel toujours plus performant, offrant la volupté d’y glisser avec assurance et audace. Et la poudreuse, qu’on va chercher au beau milieu de la forêt ou dans les combes, quel bonheur ! Mais la montagne, si majestueuse et si puissante, est imprévisible, sauvage, et a toujours le dernier mot. On peut faire alliance avec elle, mais on ne peut jamais la soumettre.

very year, it’s the same wait, the same impatience to see it arrive. With climate change, it plays hard to get and turns up a bit late. It’s not really there in December. It goes missing. This, our star of winter, our true love of the cold season is… snow. What a shame it is to miss the poetry of that radiant whiteness which looks so lovely on Christmas trees, and only being able to ski down grassy slopes which have been made skiable by snow guns.
When the first snowflakes finally do arrive, we are completely spellbound and full of joy. Both in the mountains and in the town, we are like children. Snow is like wadding, muffling noise and its harsh intrusiveness. It seems to protect us, soothe us and invite us. It is the essential partner for ski enthusiasts, providing snowy slopes just begging to be hurtled down with ever more efficient equipment offering the exquisite delight of skiing with confidence and daring. And what a delight it is to go looking for powder snow right in the middle of the valleys or forest! However, those mightily majestic and powerful mountains are unpredictable and wild – they always have the last word. You can make an alliance with them but they can never be subdued. Let us spare a thought for that gifted, enthusiastic young woman, Estelle Balet, from Valais, who
died last April during an off-piste film shoot, a little more than a year after winning the Freeride World Tour championship. We will never forget her smiling face. As with every year, new developments get our magazine moving and pushing ahead. Estival Sensations, “Prepare for Your Summer in Winter,” is becoming a small independent online supplement which cheerily looks ahead to the romantic season… Our digital media (web, apps Apple & Android, social networks) are being augmented by videos which will bring the article content to life, and other forms of communication will be offered, as we surf the current wave. Winter Sensations Magazine is hoping, as ever, to pass on new ideas, discoveries, travel destinations… and a little bit of fantasy. Antonio Indaco

Lorsque vous arrivez à Visp (en Valais) et que vous remontez tranquillement la vallée, vous finissez par vous retrouver au carrefour de deux destinations. Saas-Fee à gauche et Zermatt à droite. Quelle route prendre ? Les passionnés de ski savent bien ce qu’offre Zermatt, alors pourquoi opter pour sa « petite cousine » Saas-Fee, moins connue ? Eh bien justement parce que le chemin le moins fréquenté offre la paix et la découverte. Et quel joli nom ! On a là tous les attraits d’un village de montagne au charme infini lorsqu’on aime ces paysages, cette ambiance contemplative typiques. Surtout quand on a un domaine skiable d’un très bon niveau. Donc idéal pour aller skier en famille, en amoureux, ou en loup solitaire amateur d’authenticité et de tranquillité.

Ah, precisely because the less-well beaten track provides tranquillity and something new. And what a pretty name! When you like this sort of characteristic landscape and contemplative atmosphere, you’ll find at this place all the appeal of a mountain village with its infinite charm. This is especially so as there is a ski area of a very high standard here. Therefore, this is the ideal spot to go skiing with your family, as a couple, or as a loner who loves the real thing and tranquillity.

Où séjourner ? Where to Stay ? C’est pour nous le plus bel hôtel du coin. Récent, ouvert en 2014, il porte avec humour le nom des chèvres des alentours. Sa décoration est traditionnelle avec une belle touche de design. Il comporte quatorze superbes suites, où l’on peut gouter sereinement les divers bonheurs qu’offre la montagne en vacances. Sport et détente. Ajoutons à cela la qualité de son restaurant. (cf. Où manger) We think that The Capra is the finest hotel in the area. It opened as recently as 2014 and humorously bears the name of the goat which roams the surrounding region. Its décor is traditional with a nice designer touch. It has fourteen superb suites in which you can serenely savour the various pleasures which a holiday in the mountains offers – sport and relaxation. SAAS-FEE Au centre du village dans un lieu historique complètement rénové au goût du jour en 2014, des chambres sobres sans faute de goût. Une atmosphère amicale et détendue que l’on perçoit dés l’arrivée. Nous n’y avons pas séjourné mais imaginez un peu les cloches de l’église toute proche qui vous réveillent le matin. Ambiance. Plaisir rare de nos jours que d’entendre le son d’une cloche se propager ça et là dans l’espace calme de la montagne, plaisir peut-être un peu matinal pour certains. The Dom is in a historical location in the middle of the village. It was totally renovated in 2014 with modernised, tastefully-understated rooms. As soon as you arrive, you can sense the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We did not stay there but one can quite imagine what the bells of the nearby church must sound like when they wake you up in the morning – this does spell ambience! What a rare pleasure it is nowadays to hear a bell ringing out here and there in the quiet mountain environment – yet, a pleasure which is perhaps somewhat too early for some people. www.domcollection.ch

Où manger ? Where to Eat ? DANS LE VILLAGE / IN THE VILLAGE
Ce restaurant est tenu par le chef doublement étoilé Olivier Glowig, qui gère également le Ritz de Toronto et le Ritz de Bahrain. Certes, il n’est pas présent en cuisine, mais il élabore la carte, forme le chef de cuisine, contrôle la qualité. On se doute que ce qu’il y aura dans l’assiette sera éblouissant. Les plats sont inventifs, mêlant cuisine italienne et produits locaux. Petit bémol sur l’assaisonnement parfois un peu « timide ». This restaurant is run by the two-star chef Olivier Glowig, who also manages the Ritz-Carlton Toronto and the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain. You certainly won’t find him in the kitchen – but he creates the menu, instructs the head cook and checks quality. We feel sure that whatever is served will impress you. The meals are inventive, blending Italian cuisine and local produce. One does have reservations about the seasoning which is sometimes a little “timid.”

The name of Dü is completely in keeping with the undeniably delightful little dining room. Here, you can enjoy a good fondue and it’s almost like being at home!
SAAS-FEE Restaurant rénové au pied des pistes (à noter, c’est aussi un hôtel) qui offre une cuisine traditionnelle qui ravira les amateurs de viande et d’ambiance chaleureuse. The Larix is a renovated restaurant at the foot of the slopes offering traditional cookery which will be the delight of connoisseurs of meat and those who enjoy a friendly ambience. Note that it is a hotel too.

Jolie salle et belle terrasse. Le rendezvous des skieurs et « the place to be ». Belle carte et bon choix de vins. Spielboden has a charming dining room and a beautiful terrace. This is the skiers’ meeting place and “the place to be.” Nice menu with a good choice of wine.

Nous n’avons pas eu la chance d’apprécier pleinement les pistes, au vu du mauvais temps, et n’avons pu explorer que partiellement les possibilités du domaine skiable. Ce qui est sûr est que la neige reste présente tard dans la saison avec 1800m au pied des pistes, jusqu’à 3500m. Cela en fait aussi une très bonne destination pour skier au printemps. Le dénivelé permet de skier longtemps sans passer par un remonte-pente, ce qui est très appréciable pour les skieurs, qui par ailleurs jouissent d’un magnifique panorama. En particulier à droite sur la piste des glaciers (Gletscherpiste) qui vous 2 conduira au restaurant Spielboden. Beau programme. Quelques pistes faciles sur le front de neige. Parfait pour les débutants et les enfants très jeunes. Un conseil si vous avez le temps. Cela vaut la peine de vous rendre dans le domaine jumeau de Saas-Gründ en prenant une navette. Une fois au sommet, la piste qui descend vers la droite vaut franchement le détour. Vous vous trouvez sur une piste enclavée entre des murs de glace. Spectaculaire ! La lumière est belle, la glace polie, translucide. 12

Because of inclement weather, we didn’t have the opportunity of fully assessing the slopes and were only able to make a partial exploration of what the ski area has to offer. What is for sure is that the snow stays late in the season from 1,800m. at the foot of the slopes right up to 3,500 m. This also makes it a very good destination for spring skiing. The difference in elevation makes it possible to ski for longer without using a ski-lift. This is most convenient for skiers, who moreover, can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view, especially to the right on the glacier slope (Gletscherpiste) which takes you to the Spielboden Restaurant – a great programme. There are some easy runs at the start of the slopes. These are perfect for beginners and the very young. Here’s a tip if you have the time. You might like to take the shuttle to the twin ski area of Saas-Gründ. Once you’re at the peak, the slope which descends to the right is really worth having a go on. You’ll find a run which is enclosed by walls of ice. Spectacular! If the light is good, the ice will look polished and translucent. 13

Après ski Nightlife
Quand les rayons du soir font place à la nuit, quelques lieux vous invitent à sortir, même si ce n’est pas un endroit où la vie nocturne bat son plein. On ne vient pas là pour ça. Mais sur la rue principale, une certaine ambiance donne le ton, avec ses quelques bars. Nous avons particulièrement aimé le Zur Mühle, et sa terrasse toujours bien fréquentée. Le Nesti’s Ski Bar est assez populaire, mais la musique folk traditionnelle omniprésente nous a laissés un peu sceptiques. When the last sunbeams of dusk make way for night, there are a few places which tempt you out, although this is not a town known for a busy nightlife. You just don’t go there for that. However, in the high street, there are several bars, and a characteristic atmosphere sets the tone. We especially liked Zur Mühle, with its terrace which is always buzzing.

Nesti’s Ski Bar is pretty popular but the pervasive, traditional folk music left us somewhat dubious.

Le Pavillon des glaces. Un site unique. On descend dans les entrailles du glacier de Fee à 3500m. Entièrement réaménagé au printemps 2016, il présente de manière inédite l’histoire de ces glaces vieilles de deux mille ans. Beau et passionnant.
The Ice Pavilion. This is a unique place. You go down into the heart of the Fee Glacier at an altitude of 3,500m. The Ice Pavilion was completely revamped in Spring, 2016. It presents the story of 2,000-year-old ice in a novel way. Beautiful and fascinating.

e Festival Rock The Pistes, qui en est déjà à sa septième édition est devenu un must dans les Alpes. Il y a les concerts live sur les pistes et aussi le off le soir dans les villages. De quoi être comblé. Chaque jour, un effort logistique impressionnant est déployé pour déplacer la grande scène dans différentes stations et offrir à chacune une tête d’affiche. Au total il y aura cinq concerts entre dimanche 19 mars et samedi 25 mars. Et tous entièrement gratuits. Elle est pas belle la vie ? Il suffit de prendre votre abonnement de ski et de vous rendre sur place. Profitez de l’accueil en commençant par les stands garnis de nourriture et de boissons. Ambiance de folie garantie. Chaque concert de l’année dernière a généré une moyenne de six mille spectateurs. Heureusement, la montagne est vaste, et le son est bon.

MATMATAH
Morgins - Dimanche 19 Mars au sommet du télésiège de la Foilleuse. Après neuf ans d’absence, le groupe français de rock et de folk Matmatah a annoncé son retour le 23 septembre dernier, en donnant un premier rendezvous au public le 2 mars 2017 sur la scène de l’Olympia et quelques jours plus tard aux Portes du Soleil. On les attend avec nos moufles.
CHINESE MAN
Châtel - Plaine Dranse Lundi 20 mars. Chinese Man revient après «Racing with the Sun» et six ans d’absence. Sa quête reprend avec un deuxième opus prévu pour février 2017. Cela tombe bien. De Bombay à Marseille en passant par NewYork, ce nouvel album voyageur réserve bien des surprises et comblera les nombreux fans du groupe sino-marseillais.

RAG’N BONE MAN
Avoriaz Jeudi 23 mars. Attention, avalanche de tubes en vue ! Rory Graham, plus connu sous le nom de Rag’n Bone Man, est un auteur-compositeur-interprète britannique venu tout droit d’Uckfield. Rag’n Bone Man débutera sa tournée européenne à l’occasion de Rock the Pistes. A noter qu’il a tout de même reçu cette annee le Brits Critic’s Choice Awards, comme Adèle, Sam Smith, Elie Goulding ou Florence and The Machine les années précédentes. Bravo Monsieur.
CARAVAN PALACE
Les Gets – Morzine Vendredi 24 mars. Caravan Palace, groupe français ultra inspiré (Rien que le nom du groupe est superbe) et pionnier de l’electro-swing a un pied dans l’avenir du paysage musical. Après avoir tourné dans le monde entier,
et sur les plus grandes scènes (Glastonbury, Coachella...), Caravan Palace viendra enflammer les pistes des Portes du Soleil, après un concert mémorable en 2013 ! Ca va electroswinguer !
JULIAN PERRETTA
Champéry / Les Crosets - Le Chaudron (télésiège Crosets 8) Samedi 25 Mars. Révélé par le tube planétaire « Wonder Why « en 2005, le jeune et beau Julian Perretta, auteur-compositeur-interprète, fait un retour fracassant en 2016 avec « Miracle » (de la résurrection ?), numéro un des ventes digitales pendant des semaines dans toute l’Europe, et «I cry». Il sera bien là, sous le sommet du télésiège et sa musique pop-électro résonnera tout là-haut, près des étoiles.

Vibes at the Peak!

he Rock the Pistes Festival, which is now in its seventh year, has become an unmissable event in the Alps. There are live concerts on the slopes and side events in the evening in the villages – everything your heart desires. Every day, an impressive logistical effort is undertaken to move the big stage to different resorts and provide each one of them with a headline act. In total, there will be five concerts between Sunday, the 19th of March and Saturday, the 25th of March. All of these are completely free. Isn’t life beautiful? All you need is your ski pass and you can just turn up. Take advantage of the facilities by starting with the stands supplying food and drink. A fun atmosphere is guaranteed! Last year, each concert was attended by an average of six thousand spectators. Fortunately, the mountain is vast and the sound is great.
MATMATAH
Morgins – Sunday, the 19th of March, at the Foilleuse chairlift’s top terminal. After a nine-year absence, the French rock and folk band Matmatah announced its comeback on the 23rd of September, 2016, then inviting the public to a first concert on the 2nd of March, 2017, onstage at the Olympia, and several days later at Portes du Soleil. We await them with our mittens on…
CHINESE MAN
Châtel – Plaine Dranse, Monday, the 20th of March. After “Racing with the Sun” and a sixyear absence, Chinese Man are making a comeback. Their quest begins again with a second opus planned to be released in February, 2017. This is good timing. From Bombay to Marseilles through to New York, this new itinerant album has got lots of surprises in store and will gratify the SinoMarseilles group’s many fans.
RAG’N BONE MAN

Avoriaz – Thursday, the 23rd of March. Watch out! An avalanche of hits is coming your way! Rory Graham, better known by the name of Rag’n’Bone Man, is a British singer-songwriterperformer from Uckfield. Rag’n’Bone Man will start his European tour with the Rock the Pistes Festival. We should mention that this year he received the
BRITs Critic’s Choice Award, as did Sam Smith, Elie Goulding and Florence and The Machine in previous years. Well done, Mr. Graham!
CARAVAN PALACE
Les Gets – Morzine, Friday, the 24th of March. Caravan Palace, an ultra-inspired French band (the name alone is superb) and pioneer of electro-swing has a foothold in the future of the music scene. After a world tour playing at some of the biggest events (Glastonbury, Coachella, etc.) Caravan Palace will come and set the slopes of Portes du Soleil aflame, following on from their memorable concert in 2013! Things are gonna electro-swing!

La deuxième jeunesse d'un champion ! A la veille du début de la saison sur le glacier de Solden, nous avons eu l'occasion de poser quelques questions à Carlo Janka , un des leaders de l’équipe Suisse .
C
arlo Janka, on ne peut pas dire que votre carrière ait été un long fleuve tranquille jusqu’ici. Coupe du monde et victoire aux Jeux Olympiques dès vos débuts en 2010 et puis une longue traversée du désert dûe à plusieurs problèmes physiques mais vous revoici au meilleur niveau. Avez vous pensé abandonner la compétition à un certain point ? Qui ou quoi vous a poussé à aller de l’avant ? Raccrocher mes skis jamais de la vie, c’est une question qui ne m’a pas traversé l’ esprit. ment de plaisir dans cette discipline et c’est pour cette raison que je continue a me battre en compétition. Le choix de revenir toujours plus sur la vitesse, s’est imposé de lui même. Je n’ai jamais vraiement eu d’appréhensions par rapport à la vitesse. Aussi le fait de vouloir être un skieur complet m’a poussé dans cette direction. Vous avez gagné le classement général à 23 ans (2010). Aujourd’hui ,vous continuez à viser le grand globe de cristal ou vous vous orientez plutôt sur les victoires « d’étape » ?
Aujourd’hui je me concentre essentiellement sur les victoires ‘’d’étape’’. En ce moment le grand globe est difficilement accessible avec un athlète comme Hirscher qui a une très grande constance. Mais si je continue sur mon chemin qui sait ? En sport tout est possible. Vous êtes passé à Rossignol en 2014 et voilà que vous prolongez pour deux ans . sent vos rapports avec Angelo Maina (directeur service course de la marque ) ? L’adaptation au matériel s’est bien passée parce que les chaussures ressemblaient beaucoup a celles de mon ancien fournisseur. Quant à mon contact avec notre chef, Angelo, il est très bon. C’est quelqu’un qui a beaucoup d’expérience, et je pense que chacun de nous peut en profiter.
On the day prior to the start of the season at the Sölden glacier, we had the opportunity of putting a few questions to Carlo Janka, who is a significant member of the Swiss team.
arlo Janka – one can’t exactly say that your career thus far has always been an easy ride. You had success at the World Cup and victories at the Olympic Games right from the time you began in 2010, and then went through a spell in the wilderness due to several physical issues – but now here you are back again competing at top level! Did you think at any time about retiring from competition? Who or what gave you the impetus to forge ahead? Hang up my skis? No way! The idea never even crossed my mind. What gave me the motivation for carrying on and getting back up to my best level is my character and also my personal desire. The people who surround me gave me their support and a lot of confidence because of their belief in my abilities. You started your career specialising in
giant slalom and you gradually began focusing on speed disciplines. Why did you make this choice? Giant slalom is still very important for my basic technique, even for speed. I still get so much enjoyment out of the discipline and that’s why I continue to compete. It was an inevitable choice to concentrate on speed. I’ve never really had any apprehension about speed. Also, the fact I wanted to become an all-round skier made me go in that direction. You won the overall title at the age of twenty-three (2010). These days, are you still after that big crystal globe or are you focusing on “stage” victories instead? Nowadays, I mainly concentrate on “stage” victories. At this time, that big globe is hard to attain against an athlete like Hirscher who’s very consistent. But if I keep on going, who knows? Everything’s possible in sport. You switched over to Rossignol in 2014 and now you’re extending the contract for two years. Has it been easy getting used to your new equipment? How is your relationship with Angelo Maina (the brand’s Racing Director)? Getting used to the equipment has been very straightforward because the boots are very similar to the ones made by my previous supplier. As for relations with our boss, Angelo, they’re very good. He’s someone with a great deal of experience and I think that every one of us can make the most of that.

à la sauce japonaise
Une calandre imposante, des lignes futuristes et anguleuses, c’est indéniablement un design qui a du caractère. Certains préfèrent plus de discrétion. Nous, on apprécie. Lexus a fait le choix d’un moteur hybride, combinant astucieusement l’énergie thermique (essence) et l’énergie électrique. Le moteur à essence prend le relais lorsque les batteries sont vides et évite les inconvénients des voitures cent pour cent électriques qui nécessitent d’être rechargées périodiquement. Par contre l’autonomie purement électrique est faible : on ne pourra pas faire plus de trois kilomètres en vitesse urbaine, ce qui est bien peu comparé aux capacités des véhicules électriques nouvelle génération. En réalité, l’intérêt est ailleurs. Faire baisser la consommation moyenne d’un engin qui pèse la bagatelle de 2,3 tonnes !
A l’intérieur Dans la catégorie des SUV haut-de-gamme, la concurrence fait rage et Lexus doit rivaliser, par exemple, avec Mercedes , BMW ou Land Rover. La marque japonaise relève le gant avec brio. L’élégance de ses alliages de matériaux tels que le cuir, le plastique de qualité, le brillant de l’aluminium satiné et ses remarquables finitions forment un habitacle recherché
et moderne. L’écran de contrôle du GPS est placé dans la console du milieu, commandé par un joystick qui est un peu trop sensible à notre avis, d’autant plus lorsque l’on conduit. On aurait préféré un écran tactile, plus fonctionnel. Les sièges arrière sont spacieux, permettant d’accueillir des adultes, même corpulents !
Sensations de conduite La position du siège conducteur est réglable et confortable. Une fois installé, on se réjouit d’avance de conduire cette voiture pleine de promesses, au look agressif. Mais l’habit ne fait pas le moine. Nous ressentons une certaine déception, et restons sur notre faim. L’accélération est de 0-100 km/h en 7,7s, ce qui n’est pas tout à fait ce qu’on espérait. 26
Sur autoroute la RX est très agréable. On croirait goûter la sérénité d’une limousine insonorisée. En revanche, dans les virages serrés d’une route de campagne, l’inertie liée à son poids rend la conduite de la Lexus moins reposante. Quelques bémols donc, mais qui n’entachent pas la réussite globale de ce modèle. Prix en Suisse : dés 71 300 CHF

with a Taste of the Japanese
With its imposing radiator grill and futuristic, angular lines, the design of the Lexus RX 450h undeniably has character. Others might prefer a more understated look but we really like it. Lexus has gone for a hybrid engine which cleverly combines energy from combustion (petrol) and electricity. The petrol engine takes over when the batteries are empty, thus avoiding the inconvenience of 100 percent electric cars which require regular recharging. However, the car only has an electriconly range of three kilometres at urban speed. This is precious little when you compare it with the performance of new-generation electric vehicles. However, there is actually an entirely different purpose – lowering the average consumption of a vehicle which weighs a trifling 2.3 tonnes!
Interior Competition is fierce in the top-of-the-range SUV category and Lexus has to vie with Mercedes, BMW and Land Rover, amongst others. The Japanese car maker has taken up the challenge brilliantly. The stylishness of its combinations of materials, such as leather, high-quality plastic and lustrous satin aluminium, in addition to the outstanding fit and finish, make for a refined,
modern passenger compartment. The GPS control screen is located in the centre console. It is operated by a joystick which is a tad too sensitive in our view, especially when you’re driving. A more functional touch-screen would have been preferable. The rear seats are capacious and can easily accommodate adults – even corpulent ones!
The Driving Experience The position of the driver’s seat can be adjusted and is comfortable. Once you’re seated, you look forward to driving this very promising, mean-looking car. However, don’t judge a book by its cover. We felt a bit disappointed and not quite satisfied. 0-100 km/h acceleration is 7.7 s which isn’t exactly what we were expecting. The RX is most pleasing on the motorway.
You’d think you were savouring the tranquillity of a soundproofed limousine. However, in the tight bends of a country road, weight-related inertia makes driving the Lexus less relaxing. So, we do have some reservations, but these do not mar the overall success of this model. Price in Switzerland starts at 71,300 CHF. 27

Tesla X, le SUV
Le silence est d’or Tesla est devenue en quelques années la marque phare des voitures électriques haut-de-gamme, associant hautes performances et qualité du design intérieur et extérieur. En un mot, le luxe . Bien sûr son prix est à l’image de ses prestations, élevé. Ce qui fait la grande valeur de cette voiture particulière, c’est avant tout la qualité de la batterie. Elle permet une autonomie de quatre cents km au minimum. C’est exceptionnel pour une électrique…et ça se paye. Mais le groupe promet l’arrivée prochaine sur le marché d’un modèle plus abordable. Bonne nouvelle pour le grand public.
Le design Pour être francs, ce qui nous plaît le moins dans la X, c’est le design de sa carrosserie. Comparée à sa sœur Tesla S, berline élégante et racée, elle paraît banale et passe relativement inaperçue. Passée cette première approche, une belle surprise nous attend. Les portières arrière, appelées « falcon » pour des raisons évidentes en regardant les photos, s’ouvrent d’une manière tout à fait spectaculaire et émerveilleront les petits et grands enfants. L’avantage ? Une plus grande facilité d’accès aux deuxième et troisième rang. Certes, mais notre Tesla ne se transformera pas en avion pour éviter les embouteillages ! Comme on dit, c’est bien plus beau lorsque c’est inutile.

A l’intérieur Les finitions intérieures sont superbes. Et au centre de l’attention se trouve l’énorme écran central, vrai « cerveau » de la voiture, qui contrôle tous les systèmes dans un esprit très futuriste. L’ouverture des portes, le système audio (perfectible à notre avis), l’incontournable GPS indiquant en permanence l’autonomie et la localisation des bornes de recharge haut débit Tesla ( plein d’énergie en cinquante minutes environ). L’espace, à l’avant comme à l’arrière, est grandiose, sublimé par le pare-brise panoramique.

Grâce à ses quatre roues motrices qui l’équilibrent parfaitement, la voiture reste attachée à l’asphalte sans broncher. Toujours dans cet esprit d’avantgarde qui la caractérise, le modèle X possède une conduite assistée par une cascade de caméras. Sur l’autoroute, on pourrait même se passer de poser les mains sur le volant. Attention, le code de la route n’a pas encore intégré une telle excellence… A partir de 97’000 CHF ( à peu près 90’000 euros) pour la version 75D. C’est élevé. Le prix à mettre pour être un précurseur.

Silence is Golden
In just a few years, Tesla has become the flagship brand for top-of-the-range electric cars, bringing together high performance and top-quality interiorexterior design. In a nutshell, luxury. Of course, its high price is a reflection of its top class features. The great merit of this particular car is above all the battery’s quality. It provides a range of at least 400 km. This is outstanding for an electric car… and it doesn’t come cheap. However, the car maker is promising the imminent arrival of a more affordable model on the market. This is good news for the general public.
Design Well, to be honest, the thing we like least about the X is its body design. In comparison with its sister the Tesla S, an elegant, streamlined saloon, it appears mundane and goes relatively unnoticed. Beyond this initial impression, a pleasant surprise awaits us. The rear doors are called “falcon-wing,” for obvious reasons when you look at the photos. They open in a spectacular manner and will amaze children and adults alike. The advantage? Greater ease of access to the second and third row seats. While that’s certainly the case, our Tesla is not going to turn into an airplane to get out of traffic jams! As the saying goes, it’s a lot nicer if it’s of no use.
Interior The interior fit and finish is superb. The focus of attention is the enormous centre screen, the true “brain” of the car which controls all systems in a highly futuristic fashion. The opening of doors, the sound system (which could be improved in our opinion), the must-have GPS which continuously shows remaining range and the location of Tesla quick-charge stations (full charge in around fifty minutes). There is a spectacular amount of space both up front and in the back, enhanced by the panoramic windscreen.
The Driving Experience The acceleration is worthy of a Ferrari: 0-100 km/h in three seconds, and…it’s silent. It’ll flabbergast other drivers when the lights change to green. Thanks to its four-wheel drive which gives the car perfect balance, she sticks to the tarmac without any fuss. As a continuation of that cutting-edge spirit which distinguishes the Model X, it has a multiplicity of cameras to assist driving. On the motorway, you can even use the hands-free facility. Beware! Such high-tech has not yet been incorporated into the Highway Code… With a starting price of 97’000 CHF (around 90,000 Euros) for the 75D version, it’s not cheap, but that’s the price you have to pay for being a trailblazer.

Alpe d’Huez Q
uand on skie, on aime surtout les descentes, non ? Mais certaines stations de ski sont pourtant connues pour leurs montées, particulièrement dédiées au vélo. C’est le cas de L’Alpe d’Huez, qui est connue dans le monde entier pour sa montée mythique du Tour de France. Au départ de la vallée, et ceci jusqu’à 1800 m où se trouve le village, on peut apprécier à chaque virage les panneaux qui immortalisent les vainqueurs de l’étape depuis 1952 lorsqu’elle fut gagnée par le grand Fausto Coppi.
Un domaine de rêve aux 21 virages
Pour ce qui est du ski, même si des stations voisines sont réputées, elle n’a rien à leur envier. Il ne faut pas s’y tromper. Même si le village n’a pas le charme d’un village de montagne car la station a été construite récemment (les plus anciennes constructions remontent quand même à 1920), le domaine skiable est absolument exceptionnel et « vaut le détour » comme on dirait dans le guide Michelin.

Alpe d’Huez: a Stunning Ski Area with Twenty-One Bends
W
hen you ski, you like the downhill runs best, don’t you? However, some ski resorts are known for their uphill slopes, especially suitable for cycling. Such is the case at Alpe d’Huez, which is famous worldwide for its legendary ascent in the Tour de France. Starting off down in the valley and rising up to 1,800m. where the village is located, you can see signs on every bend which pay tribute to the stage’s winners since 1952, when it was won by the great Fausto Coppi. When it comes to skiing, even though there are many prestigious neighbouring resorts, Alpe d’Huez is every bit as good.

Make no mistake. The village does not have the charm of a mountain hamlet because the resort was only recently constructed (although the oldest buildings do date back to 1920). Nevertheless, the ski area is absolutely outstanding and is “well worth visiting” as the Michelin Guide states.

La Crémaillère serves regional cuisine which takes a nice ‘detour’ through the Basque Country. Meat and cheese feature prominently and the atmosphere is friendly.

Au départ des pistes situées à gauche du village, on ne peut le manquer avec son style original et pyramidal. You can’t miss Signal 2108 at the beginning of the slopes to the left of the village with its original, pyramid-shaped design. It’s an excellent restaurant brimming with fresh produce, served in a bright dining room displaying a touch of designer flare.
Ouverte à l’Alpe depuis 2014, on ne présente plus cette chaîne présente dans presque toutes les stations huppées. La fête ici commence à quinze heures, ce qui n’empêche pas une cuisine de très bonne qualité. La Folie Douce opened in Alpe d’Huez in 2014. This restaurant chain needs no introduction as it enjoys a presence in practically every posh resort. The partying here starts at three p.m., but that in no way prevents the cuisine from being first-rate.

Le domaine est immense avec ses 250 km de pistes pour les skieurs de tous niveaux, du débutant au freerider. On peut y passer une saison entière sans jamais s’ennuyer. Il est difficile de recenser toutes les bonnes pistes, mais il y en a deux qui sont exceptionnelles. Les deux noires Sarenne et Tunnel. Sarenne, avec ses 13 km, est considerée comme la plus longue piste noire d’Europe. En réalité, le niveau de difficulté la classerait plutôt parmi les rouges , mais sa longueur, sans possibilité de raccourcis, en fait une piste qu’il faut aborder avec une certaine expérience et une bonne condition physique. Elle est considérée comme une des plus dangereuse des Alpes. Réservée aux très bons skieurs pour arriver en bas sans dommages. Mais quel défi ! 36
ALPE D’HUEZ
The ski area is vast with 250km of slopes for skiers of all levels, from beginners to freeriders. You could spend an entire season here without ever getting bored. It is difficult to list all the good slopes but the two outstanding ones are the black runs of Sarenne and Tunnel. Sarenne, which is 13km in length, is considered to be the longest black run in Europe. Actually, the level of difficulty is akin to a red run but its length, with no possibility of short-cuts, makes it a slope which should be tackled by skiers with some experience and who are in good physical condition. Other difficulties and delights await seasoned skiers at the Tunnel run, which takes its name from the tunnel you come through to get there, and which opens out onto… a steep bumpy slope. This run is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the Alps. It is only suitable for highly proficient skiers who can get to the bottom without suffering any damage – but what a challenge! 37

C’est clair ! Depuis que la Folie Douce est venue s’installer ici, c’est le lieu de l’après ski, et la fête commence dés 15 heures. Dans le centre ville, au niveau de la Galerie de l’Ours Blanc, on trouve des bars et des pubs dont le Freeride café, le plus vivant. Restaurant et club, Le Sporting est un autre lieu incontournable. Pour l’apéritif ou le dîner, l’ambiance y est délicieusement raffinée. You bet! Since La Folie Douce set up here, this is the place to be for après ski – partying starts around 3 p.m. In the town centre, near La Galerie de l’Ours Blanc, you can find bars and pubs of which the Freeride Café is the liveliest. Le Sporting is a restaurant and club and another hot spot not to be missed. The atmosphere is exquisitely sophisticated whether you go there for cocktails or dinner.

On pourrait la surnommer le « Maracana » des freeriders. Car comme tout footballeur rêve de pouvoir jouer un jour dans le stade mythique de Rio, tout freerider professionnel rêve de descendre un jour le Bec des Rosses, dernière course du Freeride World Tour, situé dans la station Valaisanne de Verbier. Rêve oui, mais le cauchemar n’est pas très loin. Cette terrible paroi recèle de nombreux pièges et invite le skieur à trouver lui-même le chemin, la trajectoire qui le ménera en bas en réalisant la meilleure prestation possible. Rien n’est facile ici. Et on n’a pas le droit à l’erreur. Comme nous n’avons pas nous-mêmes fait l’expérience de cette descente, et pour cause, nous avons interrogé le skieur français de La Clusaz Loïc Collomb-Patton, double champion du monde du FWT, hautement qualifié pour en parler.

The Mountain the Legend end its Demons This mountain could be nicknamed the “Maracanã” for freeriders. That’s because in the same way as every footballer dreams of playing at Rio’s legendary stadium, every professional freerider dreams of skiing down the Bec des Rosses one day. The last race in the Freeride World Tour takes place on the mountain which is located in the Valais resort of Verbier. Yes, it’s a dream – but it’s not far off a nightmare! This terrifying face hides many traps and invites the skier to find his own way, the trajectory which will take him to the bottom whilst achieving the best performance possible. Nothing’s easy here and there’s no room for error. Seeing that we haven’t experienced this downhill run ourselves – and for good reason – we asked French skier Loïc CollombPatton from La Clusaz. He is double world champion of the FWT, and highly qualified to talk about it.

Loïc , on ne peut pas dire que tu aies fait dans la dentelle. Dès ton arrivée sur le circuit en 2014 tu es champion et tu renouvelles l’exploit en 2016. Tu connaissais déjà ou tu avais déjà skié le Bec des Rosses auparavant ? Non, jamais. Je ne l’avais vu qu’en photo. Comparée aux autres étapes du circuit, c’est vraiment la paroi la plus difficile à skier ou simplement la plus connue car c’est l’étape finale et historique du FWT ? C’est la plus connue. Elle était déjà renommée il y a vingt ans, quand il n’y avait que l’Xtreme de Verbier. C’est cette course qui est à l’origine du reste qui s’est monté autour et qui a donné le FWT. Mais c’est aussi la plus engagée, la plus stressante, la plus en tout. En plus c’est la dernière de la saison donc il y a beaucoup d’enjeux sur cette dernière course. On ne sait pas qui aura le titre avant Verbier donc il y a aussi le stress du classement général. Si je ne me trompe pas , tu n’as jamais gagné à Verbier. C’est une montagne qui ne te convient pas ou alors c’est que tu n’as pas encore trouvé la strategie pour la dompter ? La stratégie on la connaît. Mais on ne sait pas ce que les autres vont faire. On arrive. On pense que c’est ça la plus belle ligne et un autre a trouvé mieux ou mieux skié. Peux-tu nous parler briévement de la manière dont on se prépare pour une compétition comme l’Xtreme ? On fait beaucoup de repérages. On arrive à Verbier trois quatre jours avant la course. On prend des photos, on sort les jumelles. On cherche un point haut pour la voir dans son ensemble. On pose ses skis en bas. On monte à pied et on redescend à pied. Une fois qu’on a choisi sa ligne et plein de points de repère, on ne peut plus changer. Il y a trop d’infos à traiter en même temps quand on skie. C’est bien de savoir ce qui va arriver. Ca permet de skier fort. Après avoir été descendu tant de fois le Bec des Rosses n’a plus beaucoup de secrets pour toi…il y a des lignes que tu privilégies ou chaque année tu changes de stratégie en tenant compte, par exemple,

de la qualité de la neige ou du type de luminosité ? Surtout en fonction de la qualité de la neige. Mais c’est toujours les mêmes repères. On se focalise sur une ligne. On ne change surtout pas au dernier moment. Ca ne marche pas. Pour finir , quels sont tes prochains projets, à part d’essayer de gagner un troisieme titre FWT ? J’ai vu ta participation au documentaire Nuit de la Glisse - Don’t Crack Under Pressure Saison 2 sponsorisé par Tag Heuer. As-tu d’autres projets de ce type ? -Oui tout à fait. J’ai une année de tournage. On ne sait pas encore exactement ce qu’on va faire mais je vais continuer à travailler avec eux…et puis je vais faire une web série. On est deux, moi l’acteur et un monteur. Ca va s’appeler Lines Hunter. C’est un scoop ça ! Et on sort l’intro le 13 Décembre.

Loïc – we must say that you really mean business. You became champion when you first took part in the event in 2014, and then you repeated the feat in 2016. Were you already acquainted with the Bec des Rosses – had you already skied down it before? No, never. I’d only seen a photograph of it. In comparison with other stages of the tour, is this really the hardest mountain face to ski on? Or is it simply the best known because it’s the final, celebrated event in the FWT? It’s the best known. It was already famous twenty years ago when there was only the Xtreme Verbier. It’s this race that was at the origin of all the other stuff which built up around it and gave rise to the FWT.”

“But this race is also the most active and the most stressful one – the most of everything. In addition, it’s the last one of the season, so the stakes are really high on this last race. No one knows who’ll win the title before Verbier so there’s also the stress of the overall ranking.If I’m not mistaken, you’ve never won at Verbier. Is that because it’s not your kind of mountain or is it because you haven’t yet found the strategy to master it? The strategy is known. But you don’t know what the others are going to do. You arrive. You decide what the best line is and another person has found something better or skied better. Can you talk to us a bit about how you get prepared for a competition like Xtreme? You do a lot of reconnoitring. You arrive in Verbier three or four days before the race. You take photos; you get out your binoculars. You look for a high point to see the terrain in its entirety. You take your skis off at the bottom. You go up on foot and come back down on foot. Once you’ve chosen your line and loads of landmarks, you can no longer change anything. There’s too much data to process at the same time as skiing. It’s good to know what’s ahead. It means you can put a lot into your skiing. After descending the Bec des Rosses so many times, it no longer holds any secrets for you… are there lines you prefer to take, or do you change strategy each year, for example, by taking snow quality or brightness conditions into account? Most depends on snow quality. But the landmarks are the same. You focus on one line. You don’t make changes, particularly at the last moment. That doesn’t work. Finally, what are your forthcoming projects aside from trying to win a third FWT title? I saw your contribution to the documentary, Nuit de Glisse – Don’t Crack Under Pressure, Season 2, sponsored by Tag Heuer. Do you have other similar projects to come? Yes, absolutely. I’ve got one year of filming coming up. We don’t know exactly what we’re going to do yet, but I’m going to carry on working with them… and then I’ll do a web series. There are two of us – me the actor and a film editor. It’s going to be called Lines Hunter. That’s a real scoop! And the intro’s coming out on the 13th of December.

La Réserve Paris Hotel and Spa Plus qu’un hôtel, l’art de vivre au XIXème siècle, avec le confort du XXIème
O
n ne va pas vous mentir, notre activité nous gâte. Elle nous amène à fréquenter des lieux, des établissements prestigieux, et le service qui lui correspond. Parfois, l’habitude risque de glisser vers la routine. Heureusement, il nous arrive encore d’être éblouis, quand l’ensemble de ce qui nous est proposé est au-delà des sentiers battus du luxe. On a alors le sentiment de l’unique. C’est le cas pour La Réserve Paris Ouvert en 2015, c’est le dernier fleuron de Michel Reybier, après Genève et Ramatuelle.
UN HÔTEL PARTICULIER QUI A UNE HISTOIRE
L’hôtel fut initialement bâti en 1854 par le Duc de Morny, demi-frère de Napoléon III, puis racheté et transformé par Pierre cardin, avant d’être finalement repris par Michel Reybier qui a visiblement le sens de l’exceptionnel.
UN HAVRE DE PAIX
Même si nous sommes à deux pas des Champs-Elysées, et de l’Elysée tout court, on ne ressent pas l’agitation toute proche. C’est un écrin de tranquillité propice à la détente et à la rêverie, en plein coeur de la capitale française.
UN ACCUEIL SOIGNÉ
On évite ici l’empressement d’un personnel nombreux à l’arrivée. C’est le manager qui vous invite à vous asseoir et vous briefe sur le fonctionnement de l’hôtel, ses trésors, ses plaisirs annoncés. C’est l’avant-goût du bonheur.
REFLETS DU PASSÉ ET CONFORT ULTRAMODERNE
Lorsqu’on plonge dans l’atmosphère des parties communes du rez-dechaussée, c’est tout un monde de belles manières à l’ancienne qui se dé-
ploie entre le salon et le bar (seuls ouverts au public) et le fumoir (smoking lounge) avec la bibliothèque. Et puis, concession oblige à la vie moderne, le Spa avec sa piscine de seize mètres bordée de divins divans et la partie soins signée Nescens. Ces derniers agréments sont en revanche réservés aux résidents des vingt-six suites et quatorze chambres. C’est le fameux Jacques Garcia qui a une fois encore créé l’architecture intérieure et la décoration. Tentures murales, parquet Versailles, boiseries, cour arborée , n’en jetez plus ! Le tout avec une belle dominante de rouge. Les chambres et suites sont tout aussi chaleureuses. Ce sont parmi les plus belles que l’on a pu apprécier, mêlant charme d’antan et technologie de pointe. Notre suite était composée d’un salon avec un grand bar, et d’une chambre à la literie de rêve. C’est le cas de le dire. Un long couloir penderie menant à la salle de bains en marbre, très raffinée avec son sol chauffant et sa baignoire . Cachée derrière les miroirs, la télévision est contrôlée par un Ipad. La qualité audio est époustouflante. De quoi chasser les fantômes du passé ! Il peut paraître difficile de quitter un tel cocon pour aller visiter la ville lumière. Le prix, bien entendu, est en rapport avec l’excellence de l’hôtel. Il commence à quatre chiffres...

More Than a Hotel – the Art of Nineteenth Century Gracious Living with Twenty-First Century Comfort
W
ell, to be perfectly frank with you, we are indeed spoiled by our job. It takes us to prestigious places and establishments, with a correspondingly high level of service. However, there are times when habit risks sliding into routine. Fortunately, we can still be inspired with awe when the overall package of what is on offer to us goes beyond the usual realm of luxury. It is then that we feel that something is unique. This is the case for La Réserve Paris. Opened in 2015, the hotel is the latest gem by Michel Reybier, following on from those in Geneva and Ramatuelle. A MANSION WITH A HISTORY The mansion was first built in 1854 by the Duke of Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III. It was subsequently acquired and converted by Pierre Cardin, before finally being taken over by Michel Reybier who obviously has a feel for the outstanding. A HAVEN OF PEACE Although we are only a short distance from the Champs Elysées, and from the Elysée itself, we don’t feel the nearby hustle and bustle. This is a tranquil spot conducive to relaxation and reverie, right in the heart of the French capital. A PLEASANT, CARING WELCOME Here, you don’t get a plethora of staff rushing about on your arrival. It’s the manager who’ll invite you to take a seat and tell you about how the hotel operates, its treasures and advertised delights. It’s a taster of bliss to come. REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST AND ULTRAMODERN COMFORT When you immerse yourself in the ambience of the communal areas on the ground floor, a whole realm of old-fashioned social graces extends from the lounge and bar (the only places open to the public) to the smoking lounge with library. And then, in that essential concession to modern life, we have the spa with its sixteen-metre swimming pool surrounded by divine divans and the Nescens care area. These latter amenities are, however, reserved exclusively for guests staying at the twenty-six suites and fourteen rooms. Once again, it is the renowned Jacques Garcia who has created the interior architecture and design. Wall hangings, Versailles parquet flooring, woodwork, wooded courtyard, say no more! A fine red dominates throughout. The rooms and suites are just as warm and welcoming. They are amongst the most beautiful we have had the pleasure of admiring, blending the charm of yesteryear with state-of-the-art technology. Our suite was comprised of a drawing room with a large bar and a bedroom with heavenly bed linen. You can say that again! A long corridor with walk-in wardrobe leads to the exceedingly sophisticated marble bathroom with underfloor heating and bath. The television is housed behind mirrors and is controlled by an iPad. The sound quality is staggering and is surely enough to chase away the ghosts of the past! One might be quite reluctant to leave this cocoon to go and visit the City of Light. Naturally, the price is in keeping with the hotel’s excellence. It starts with a four-figure number… 45

L
e restaurant d’un tel hôtel se devait de placer la barre très haut. Dans l’assiette, esthétique et créativité. Pour le palais, un régal. De la haute gastronomie. Le chef Jérôme Banctel, qui orchestre la cuisine , a déjà fait ses preuves au Crillon, chez Lucas Carton et à L’Ambroisie. Belles références ! Comme beaucoup d’autres à l’heure actuelle, il s’est enrichi des influences de la cuisine japonaise, et on le ressent. Quelques exemples de plats pour la bonne bouche :

he restaurant at such a hotel is duty-bound to set extremely high standards. What we are served is aesthetic and creative – a treat for the palate – real gourmet cuisine. Polaris et Impulse Festival Alors on danse?

erbier est en train de devenir une des stations les plus dynamiques et riche d’évènements hors ski. La station valaisanne est un haut lieu de festivités dans les Alpes et attire de nombreux touristes, jeunes ou moins jeunes car sa vie nocturne y est riche, vivante, sophistiquée selon les goûts. L’année dernière deux festivals y ont vu le jour et sont venus couvrir deux moments « délicats» de la saison créant, à travers la musique, une ambiance encore plus attractive. « Polaris » lance la saison début décembre et « Impulse » la clôture en avril.

erbier is becoming one of the most dynamic resorts with a wealth of events unrelated to skiing. The Valais resort is a top spot for festivities in the Alps attracting many tourists, young and old alike. They come for its rich nightlife, which can be vibrant or sophisticated depending on tastes. Last year, two festivals were created in Verbier which provide entertainment for two tricky periods of the season using music to create a yet more appealing atmosphere. “Polaris” launches the season at the beginning of December and “Impulse” closes it in April.

Polaris est un festival electro qui accueille les plus grands et les pionniers du genre comme la légende canadienne Richie Hawtin ou encore Lil Louis, un des créateurs de la house, et naturellement Luciano parrain du Festival. Cette année, le main stage reste la terrasse (couverte !) du Mouton Noir à 2200 m. On y accède facilement par le téléphérique qui part du centre de la station mais pour sa deuxième édition, Polaris étend son offre musicale dans trois clubs des alentours : l’Étoile Rouge, Farinet et la Casbah. La scène de Médran est gratuite comme l’année dernière. De quoi contenter tout le monde.

Polaris is an electronic music festival hosting the biggest names and pioneers of the genre, such as Canadian legend Richie Hawtin, and Lil Louis, one of the creators of house, and, of course, Luciano, the festival’s patron. This year, the main stage is still the terrace (it’s covered!) of Le Mouton Noir at 2,200m. altitude. Cable car provides easy access from the centre of the resort. However, for this, the event’s second year, the Polaris Festival is extending its musical roster to the three local clubs, Étoile Rouge, Farinet and Casbah. The Médran stage is free as it was last year. There’s something to please everybody.

TROIS TÊTES D’AFFICHES POUR UN PROGRAMME ALLÉCHANT
Impulse Festival, pour sa deuxième édition, cible décidément les amateurs de musique live. Les concerts se produisent dans l’arène de neige au niveau des Attelas, près du Chalet Carlsberg pour ceux qui connaissent les lieux. L’année dernière déjà, on a pu voir se produire le délicieux Charlie Winston et le grand groupe Texas. Le concert du dimanche, en revanche, a été annulé pour cause de grosse tempête de neige. Ce sont les aléas de la montagne… Cette année, bonne nouvelle, les concerts seront totalement gratuits. The second year of the Impulse Festival is definitely targeted at lovers of live music. The concerts will be held in the Attelas snow arena, near Chalet Carlsberg, for those who know the vicinity. Last year, we’d already been treated to performances by the charming Charlie Winston and famous band Texas. However, the concert on the Sunday had to be cancelled because of a huge snowstorm. Such are the vagaries of the mountains… The good news this year is that the concerts are completely free. All you need is a ski pass to be able to access the show area at the beginning of the afternoon and there you have it! There are three headline acts for a tempting programme.

Les chaussures de ski, cet obscur objet de torture… Combien de fois avons-nous entendu dire par des amis au bord de la crise de nerfs, qu’après s’être payés de nouvelles chaussures de ski cher pour avoir la qualité, leur première descente a été rude ? Mal aux pieds, pieds gelés. Ca gâche carrément le plaisir. Ou encore qu’ils doivent desserrer les boucles à la fin de chaque descente pour se soulager du terrible carcan, rêvant du moment libérateur où ils pourront enfin se déchausser.
The Ski Boot: That Obscure Object of Torture… How many times have we heard from friends on the verge of a nervous breakdown that after laying out a load of money to try and get good-quality new ski boots they’ve had a dreadful downhill run with them? Aching feet, frozen toes – it really does spoil the enjoyment. Problème A l’inverse des skis que l’on peut tester sur les pistes, les chaussures sont achetées en magasin une fois pour toutes, avec tout au plus une petite promenade dans la boutique, à sec. Il n’est pas facile de se rendre compte, dans ces conditions, de ce que nous réserve le terrain. Et pas d’échange possible, ce serait trop facile. Pourtant, les skieurs de tous les jours les gardent en moyenne trois à quatre ans. Or sans confort des pieds, finies les réjouissances du ski. Une bonne chaussure de ski est la base pour passer une agréable journée sur les pistes, avec les pieds au chaud, pas compressés comme un césar, et la jambe bien maintenue synonyme de sécurité. Voici donc quelques conseils indispensables pour éviter ces déboires.
Trois catégories de chaussures Race : destinées aux athlètes ou au skieurs très techniques. • Rigides : Flex entre 130 et 150. ! Le numéro de flex n’est pas une valeur absolue, il peut varier selon les marques, mais on le donne comme valeur de comparaison. • Rembourrage de la chaussure interne réduit pour privilé gier la sensibilité de la transmission au ski. En conséquence le confort thermique est atténué. • Largeur de la plante du pied réduite (93-95 mm). Allround : destinées à la grande majorité des skieurs • Flex entre 100 et 130 pour les skieurs d’un bon niveau (Allround Top Level) et entre 60 et 90 pour les débu tants. • Largeur de la plante du pied au-delà de 96 mm et un confort thermique élevé : faites pour être chaussées toute la journée. Freeski : nouveau segment dédié au freestyle et au freeride • Flex entre 100 et 130 et structure proche des chaussures race pour leur largeur à la plante du pied . • Possibilité de modifier la position de la coque entre ski et walk.

Problem Unlike skis, which can be tested out on the slopes, boots are bought in a shop once and for all, with a little walk around the boutique at the very most, without skis. Under these conditions, it’s not easy to ascertain exactly how they will behave on the terrain. And exchanging them for another pair is not possible – that’d be too easy! However, ordinary skiers keep boots for three to four years on average. Still, all skiing enjoyment is out of the window if your feet are not comfortable. A good ski boot is a basic necessity to spend a nice day out on the slopes with your feet snug, not squashed like sardines in a tin, and your legs well-supported, which is synonymous with safety. So, here is some essential advice to avoid all these trials and tribulations.
Three Categories of Boot Race: for athletes or highly technical skiers Stiff: Between 130 and 150 flex. ! The flex number is not definitive. It can vary according to brand but is given for the purposes of comparison. A limited amount of padding inside the boot to improve the sensitivity of power transfer to the ski. As a consequence, thermal comfort is reduced. Reduced sole width (93-95 mm). All-round: for most skiers Between 100 and 130 flex for proficient skiers (Allround Top Level) and between 60 and 90 for beginners. Sole width over 96 mm and high thermal comfort: made to be worn all day. Freeski: a new category dedicated to freestyle and freeride Between 100 and 130 flex with structure close to race boots in their sole width. The shell can be switched to “ski” or “walk” position.

Test à sec dans le magasin Oubliez d’abord l’envie d’une couleur ou d’un accord parfait avec votre combinaison. Ce n’est pas pour la photo! Franchement, une journée qui commence avec une douleur aux pieds et qui ne vous quitte pas, c’est l’enfer on est d’accord. Trois choses importantes: • Expliquez clairement votre niveau de ski au vendeur, puis faites-vous mesurer la largeur du pied. • Les méthodes de grand-mère du style on achète des chaussures trop grandes et on met de grosses chaussettes avec, oh non! Elles doivent être confortables et garder la chaleur avec de simples chaussettes de ski. • En les essayant, veillez à fermer les crochets en commençant par la pointe. Une fois fermées, vérifiez qu’en vous penchant le talon ne monte pas et que les doigts de pied ne touchent pas tout à fait le bout, l’effleurant juste si vous êtes debout. A noter: le plastique est plus sensible aux variations de température. Les chaussures peuvent vous paraître souples dans le magasin chauffé, alors qu’elles deviendront plus rigides sur piste.
Arrrgh ! Je me suis trompé de taille. Que puis-je faire ? Malgré nos précieux conseils vous vous êtes trompés de taille ? • Si elles sont trop grandes: Il n’y a rien à faire à part faire un coup de charme au vendeur/ à la vendeuse pour qu’elle vous les change. Sinon, il vous reste à la revendre, à la donner à votre cousin qui a des grands pieds, ou à l’utiliser comme cale-porte. • Si elles sont légèrement trop petites. Bonne nouvelle , il y a quelque chose à faire ! Le Bootfitting ! Avec l’intervention d’un technicien spécialisé qui apporte de légers mais précieux ajustements en largeur et en longueur, vos chaussures sont adaptées à vos pieds et confortables. Ô merveille. Pour conclure, les chaussures sont pour le skieur la première pierre à l’édifice d’un ski relax et performant, et sont donc un investissement à prendre au sérieux. Sans confort à ce niveau, on est sérieusement gêné et on ne profite pas. C’est bien dommage.

Trying them on in the Shop First of all, you can forget wanting a particular colour or a perfect match with your ski suit. This isn’t for a photo shoot! Honestly, a day starting off with pain in your feet which refuses to go away is absolute hell – we all agree about that! Three important things: • Clearly state your ability level to the sales assistant and then have your foot width measured. • Old-fashioned methods, such as buying boots a size too large and putting on thick socks to compensate, are a big no-no! Boots must be comfortable and retain heat with standard ski socks. • When you try them on, make sure you close the buckles at the tip first. Once they are done up, lean forwards and check that the heel does not rise and that your toes don’t quite touch the end – they should just make contact if you’re standing up straight. It should be noted that plastic is more sensitive to temperature variations. The boots should seem more flexible in a heated shop but will become stiffer on the slopes.
Arrrgh! I got the wrong size! What can I do? You still got the wrong size in spite of our helpful advice? • If they’re too big, there’s not a lot you can do except turn on the charm with the sales assistant to get him or her to change them for you. Otherwise, your only options are to sell them on, give them to your cousin who’s got big feet, or use them as a door-stop. • If they’re slightly too small, the good news is that something can be done! Boot fitting! If a specialised technician makes small but effective adjustments to the width and length, your boots will fit your feet and be comforta ble. Oh, how wonderful! In conclusion, for the skier, boots are a basic requirement for relaxed, high performance skiing, and so are an investment to be taken seriously. If you don’t have comfort in this respect, you’ll be severely hampered and not be able to enjoy yourself. That would be a pity.

En une journée entière de ski la luminosité change en permanence, et la coloration de nos lunettes ne permet pas une adaptation constante à la quantité de lumière. Ces nouveaux verres photochromes pourraient bien être une avancée importante vers la résolution de l’adaptabilité des verres permettant une vision optimale en toutes circonstances. Nous employons le conditionnel à dessein car pour l’instant, l’absorption de la forte lumière des jours ensoleillés est un peu faible. De plus, le froid peut perturber le changement du niveau de protection. Il faut dire que le modèle n’a pas été étudié spécifiquement pour la neige mais plutôt pour les activités comme la course ou le cyclisme.

Lézarder au soleil reste une belle option pour d’autres mois de l’année, mais quand on a la chance de pouvoir jouir de la montagne de Décembre à Avril, ce serait un triste gâchis de ne pas en profiter. Et on vous garantit que ça en vaut la peine. Mais prenons l’exemple de ma chère sœur qui est plutôt une skieuse du dimanche, et qui n’aime pas trop affronter des météos inconfortables…

OSEZ LE SKI DE PRINTEMPS ! En décembre…Il n’y a pas de neige ou bien du canon à neige. C’est trop difficile de skier pour moi. En janvier…Alors là, il y a de la neige, mais un froid glacial. Je skie deux heures par jour maximum et puis vite, un bon vin chaud. En février…La neige est là. Le temps est meilleur. Dommage. Ce sont les vacances scolaires et les pistes sont complètement encombrées. Ce n’est pas très relax pour moi, sans compter les prix des hôtels qui grimpent, qui grimpent pendant la haute saison. Logique. En mars…Le printemps arrive. J’ai envie de bronzer au soleil de Malte. Tiens ! Il y a justement une « offre spéciale » sur internet… » Non. Erreur à ne pas commettre. C’est justement le moment idéal pour des vacances à la montagne, avec une période en or de début mars à mi avril. On vous le dit. Tout pour plaire. Une abondance de neige, de longues journées ensoleillées qui permettent de se découvrir un peu pour attraper de belles couleurs, et pour couronner le tout, des prix à la baisse, des offres exceptionnelles liées à la basse saison. On optera pour des stations au-dessus de 2000 mètres bien entendu. Et ça ne manque pas. Pour profiter de ce moment béni de l’année, nous avons choisi Val d’Isère, splendide village élégant et typique -Vous aurez un vaste choix d’hôtels de toutes catégories et de tous styles, selon votre budget et votre goût. Quant au domaine skiable, il est exceptionnel et partagé avec celui de Tignes, baptisé «Espace Killy » à la gloire du grand skieur transalpin JeanClaude Killy triple médaillé d’or au Jeux Olympiques de Grenoble en 1968. 66

Primée au Grand Prix de la Haute Horlogerie de Genève en novembre dernier, cette version est la réédition , quarante ans après, de celle qu’en 1976, Jack Heuer, arrière petit-fils du fondateur de la maison, avait dessinée pour célébrer le premier titre de champion du monde de Niki Lauda chez Ferrari. Once again, we have a regional edition from Punch. It is a nice 15 cm format which fulfils its purpose, releasing a beautifully smooth smoke which gets stronger in the second and last third.
Ramon Allones Club Allones Edition Limitada 2015 On est en présence ici d’un joli Corona Gorda produit par une des fabriques que l’on préfère à La Havane. Une belle cape cache une tripe vieillie deux ans. A l’allumage, la puissance moyenne laisse s’échapper des saveurs de bois et d’épices. Des notes qui évoluent vers un final plutôt café torrefié .
Here we have a lovely Corona Gorda produced by one of our favourite factories in Havana. A fine wrapper leaf envelops the filler which has been aged for two years. Upon lighting, the medium strength flavour evokes woody and spicy aromas. These notes develop into a finale which is reminiscent of roasted coffee.
Habanos Añejado: Romeo & Julieta Piramides / Montecristo Churchills Le concept “Añejado” (Aged) est présenté à travers deux nouvelles vitoles, le Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Añejados (Cepo de 52 et longueur de 156mm) ainsi que le Montecristo Churchills Añejados (Cepo de 47 et longueur de 178mm). Particularité de ces deux cigares : après avoir étés roulés, ces derniers ont étés stockés durant une période de cinq à huit ans dans les boîtes originales. À travers ce processus de vieillissement, dans de parfaites et stables conditions de stockage, les cigares ont pu développer une harmonie et une complexité étonnantes.

The “Añejado” (Aged) concept can be seen in two new vitolas, the Romeo y Julieta Pirámides Añejados (Cepo 52, and length 156 mm), as well as the Montecristo Churchills Añejados (Cepo 47, and length 178 mm). The special feature of these two cigars is that after they have been rolled, they are stored for a five to eight-year period in the original boxes. Thanks to this ageing process under ideal, stable storage conditions, the cigars have developed fantastic balanced and sophisticated flavour.

Ces trois nouveaux modules confirment tout le bien qu’on en pense sur le plan de la qualité et de l’harmonie.
The Nicaraguan region has long been the terrain of choice for Davidoff cigars. It must be acknowledged that outside of Cuba, Nicaragua has provided the most opportunities for experimenting with highly sophisticated and continually evolving tobaccos. SAN´DORO Claro Robusto - Colorado Toro Si en Suisse on associe immédiatement le nom de Villiger avec celui de tabac, on lui associe plus rarement une image de qualité premium. Et pourtant on découvre qu’à travers leurs gammes se cachent de vraies perles faites main . Comme par exemple la gamme San’Doro Claro et Colorado, avec une construction parfaite de tabac en provenance du Nicaragua combinée à une excellente maitrise de la force. A essayer même pour les plus sceptiques….
In Switzerland, the name Villiger is immediately associated with tobacco, but rarely with a premium quality image. However, we can find some true hand-made gems hiding in amongst their ranges. For example, this is the case with the San’Doro Claro and Colorado ranges which boast flawless construction of cigars made from Nicaraguan tobacco, combined with wonderful expertise in producing blends of the right strength. Even the greatest sceptics should give them a try…

Royal Savoy retour vers le futur….
L
’ouverture d’un hôtel est toujours un événement et une belle nouvelle pour les touristes. La richesse du choix crèe une dynamique, et à l’habitude, on peut préférer la découverte. Encore plus quand cet hôtel est un Palace qui s’insère habilement dans la grâce d’un établissement historique et qui en réveille la beauté comme une «belle au bois dormant»... Cet automne, lors de l’inauguration du Royal Savoy, les six cents invités présents n’ont pu qu’être impressionnés par cette métamorphose, cette immense rénovation qui s’est faite grâce aux fonds investis par le groupe Qatarien Katara Hospitality. Le bâtiment originel datant de 1909, a des allures de château enchanté tant prisé à la Belle Epoque. Avec ses tourelles, il pourrait sortir d’un conte de fées. Petit bémol, la large place bétonnée devant l’entrée, qu’on aurait rêvée plus verdoyante. Il paraît qu’elle est vouée à des aménagements à venir. Une patinoire en hiver …Pourquoi pas ? L’hôtel possède 196 chambres et suites, luxueusement déco-
rées au goût du jour, tant dans l’ancien que dans le nouveau bâtiment. Un couloir fermé relie les deux ailes et un espace où les désirs de bien-être seront comblés offre des salles de soins, une piscine intérieure, une piscine extérieure, et autres joyeusetés ! A l’intérieur règne l’harmonie des matériaux : luxe du marbre, chaleur des boiseries, confort du cuir des fauteuils se mêlent avec un goût maîtrisé dans les trois espaces principaux, le Lounge Bar, La Brasserie, et le cigar Lounge. Le niveau de l’hôtel n’est pas démenti par son restaurant « La Brasserie du Royal », dirigé par le Chef alsacien Marc Haeberlin, triplement étoilé. Il fallait bien ça ! Il n’est pas souvent en cuisine car il gère d’autres restaurants. Une configuration assez courante de nos jours, qui peut être frustrante pour les gastronomes. Mais nous avons eu la chance de goûter à cette cuisine éxécutée par le Chef Julien Krauss, et nous n’avons pas été déçus. Excellente. A ne pas manquer, le Brunch du Dimanche qui permet de se réveiller les papilles en beauté.

Back to the Future….

he opening of a hotel is always an event and good news for tourists. Abundance of choice creates a dynamic, and trying out something new can be preferable to what one is used to. This is even more so when it’s a luxury hotel which fits in neatly with the grace of an historic property awakening its magnificence like a “Sleeping Beauty”… This autumn, at the inauguration of the Royal Savoy, the six hundred guests in attendance could not help but be impressed by this metamorphosis; a vast restoration job which was completed thanks to funds invested by the Qatari group, Katara Hospitality. The original building dates back to 1909 and looks like an enchanted castle, which was much in vogue in the Belle Epoque. Its turrets make it look like something from a fairy tale. One slight downside is the large concrete area in front of the entrance which one would have liked to be more verdant. It appears that it is intended for future development. A skating rink in winter… why not? The hotel has 196 rooms and suites, which are opulently decorated in
an up-to-date style, both in the old and new buildings. An enclosed corridor links the two wings and an area where your every desire for well-being will be fulfilled. Here, there are beauty treatment rooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and other delights! Inside the hotel, the blend of materials creates harmony: the luxury of the marble, the warmth of the woodwork and the comfort of the leather armchairs combine with masterful taste in the three main areas: the Lounge-Bar, Brasserie and Cigar Lounge. The standard of the hotel is certainly not let down by its restaurant “La Brasserie du Royal,” run by three-star Michelin Chef Marc Haeberlin from Alsace. Just what the doctor ordered! He’s not often to be found in the kitchen because he manages other restaurants. This is quite a common set-up these days which can be frustrating for gourmets. However, we had the opportunity of trying out the food prepared by Chef Julien Krauss and we were not disappointed. Superb! Something not to be missed is Sunday Brunch which wakes up the tastebuds a treat. 91

Le paradis retrouvé
e Val d’Aoste est si près de la Suisse (une heure en voiture de Genève), qu’on est étonné de voir si peu de suisses romands s’y intéresser. Et pourtant…la beauté sauvage de ses paysages mêlée à la douceur de vivre typique de la péninsule ont tout pour attirer les amoureux de la montagne et du ski. Outre ses deux stations réputées Courmayeur et Cervinia, cette région regorge de petits villages au charme envoûtant. L’un de ceux-ci, Cogne, est à couper le souffle. Il est à 1543m d’altitude, au cœur du splendide Parc du Grand Paradis dont le sommet culmine à 4061m. On arrive par une étroite vallée, et on débouche sur un haut-plateau qui se déploie sur une étendue de 55 hectares de prairie, le Pré Saint-Ours. L’effet est saisissant. Au fil des saisons, on passe d’un pré verdoyant et fleuri au grand manteau de neige.

he Aosta Valley is so close to Switzerland (one hour’s drive from Geneva) that it’s amazing to see how few Swiss-French people take an interest in it. And yet… the wild beauty of its landscapes in combination with the typical easy living of the peninsula has everything required to entice mountain and skiing enthusiasts. In addition to the two renowned resorts of Courmayeur and Cervinia, this region is brimming with bewitchingly delightful little villages. Cogne is one of these and it is breathtaking. It sits at 1,543m. altitude, in the heart of the splendid Gran Paradiso National Park, named after the mountain whose summit reaches 4,061m. One arrives via a narrow valley opening out onto a high plateau which spreads across 55 hectares of grassland, called Saint Ursus Meadow. The effect is stunning. Over the course of the seasons, the verdant, blooming meadow is transformed by a thick blanket of snow.

Bellevue Our readers will be familiar with our taste for alpine hotels which have understated designer dÊcor. Here, we find a very different style but which is appealing nonetheless because of its authenticity and the charm of its period furniture. Most dates from the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century which does lend lots of character to the various rooms. Laura Roullet, a descendant of the original owners and present director of the hotel, will be happy to unveil the mysteries behind its authentic ambience, something she does with great charm. And everyone here speaks French. Special mention should be made about the bright new suite, complete with picture window and an almost floating bathtub. We shall say no more! Additionally, a huge spa of 1,200 square metres provides a splendid range of activities devoted to your well-being. The hotel has several restaurants, but the one which adds a touch of grandeur to the place is Le Petit Restaurant, which, as its name indicates, has only four tables. Chef Fabio Iacovone skilfully and creatively uses traditional produce from the Aosta Valley. It’s a winner! The wine and cheese cellars are also well worth a visit and your hosts will be only too pleased to show you round.

The food’s resolutely traditional at La Brasserie du Bon Bec, with copious portions served in a characteristic setting. It’s ideal after a long day’s skiing. Frecacha is an absolute must dish – a stew made from meat, cabbage, potatoes and onions. And the dessert, La Crema di Cogne… what a lip-smacking knock-out!

Difficile de repartir les mains vides, sans craquer pour quelques produits du terroir. This is an oenoteca-trattoria (a wine shop cum bistro) which is, in fact, a really good little restaurant. This is the perfect place for a relaxed, impromptu meal. It’s hard to leave empty-handed because you’re sure to fall for some irresistible local produce.

Pour ceux qui veulent faire du ski alpin, 8km de belles descentes suffisent pour une journée de ski en famille. “Ein Deutsches Requiem” Op. 45, based on the Holy Scriptures, is for soprano, baritone, choir and orchestra. As it is set to the Holy Scriptures, this oratorio provides the Ballett am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg the opportunity to put together some superb choreography as only its director and choreographer Martin Schläpfer knows how.

Composed in great solitude by Wagner, Lohengrin is primarily a massive aesthetic and political manifesto which questions the place of genius in society and lays the foundations of the musical drama. The work, of which the premiere performance was directed by Liszt in Weimar in 1850, marked a turning point in Wagner’s life. It deeply moved Ludwig II of Bavaria who became his patron and friend, supporting him in all his future undertakings.
