Summer Sensations Magazine Décidément, il n’y a plus de demi-saisons ! Après cinq années de parution, notre magazine passe aussi à l’heure d’été. Winter Sensations, dédié aux amoureux du ski, de la montagne, de la belle vie au coin du feu lance cette année son double : Summer Sensations. Quand la saison des domaines skiables, qui peut s’étendre de fin octobre jusqu’à un printemps bien entamé, se termine, on range ses skis et sa doudoune et on commence à envisager le bel été qui arrive. Le soleil, peu à peu, réchauffe l’atmosphère. On a envie de mer, mais parfois on s’interroge sur la destination idéale. Il y a tant de possibilités, et on peut se tromper d’adresse ! This year, Winter Sensations, which is dedicated to all those who love skiing, mountains, and the good life by the fireside, is launching its twin, Summer Sensations. When the skiing season comes to an end (it can stretch from the end of October well into spring), you pack your skis and quilted jacket away and start to think about the beautiful summer to come. The sun slowly warms up the air. You want to go to the seaside but sometimes you wonder where the ideal destination is. There are so many possible places that you can easily go wrong! Summer Sensations will be your guide, guaranteeing that you’ll always be amazed, enchanted and get the very best available. e passé glorieux d’Antibes et de Juan-les-Pins n’est pas tombé au fond de la piscine scintillante d’une fin de soirée. Cette presqu’île, particulièrement protégée d’une certaine vulgarité qui s’est propagée à vive allure dans nombre de lieux de la côte Sud, garde des trésors esthétiques, sensuels, culturels, festifs. La mer, le ciel, les villas, les hôtels prestigieux se confondent. Des dégradés de bleus, des ors de fin du jour qui invitent aux plaisirs du soir. Plaisirs mondains pour certains, jazz, ors plus denses des bijoux portés avec grâce.

Mais Antibes, forte de son histoire qui remonte à l’antiquité, reste un haut lieu de villégiature et de tourisme. En journée, on peut choisir de faire une randonnée par le Sentier des douaniers en partant de la Chapelle de la Garoupe, puis en longeant la côte par des sentiers sinueux et assez sportifs, émerveillés par le paysage sauvage entre falaises de calcaire blanc et criques profondes. On arrive alors au Cap, occupé par la splendide villa Eilen Roc, propriété d’Antibes.

On peut y goûter une extrême quiétude, alanguis dans des villas cachées aux yeux des curieux par la nature, ou entrer dans la danse dans des clubs en pointe drivés par des dj’s en pointe. Pour commencer, tels le héros de « Minuit à Paris » de Woody Allen, remontons le temps dans les années vingt pour y croiser ces figures de l’époque pour qui la « French Riviera » représentait le paradis sur terre. Ils venaient y passer de longues vacances, ou une partie de leur vie. Sur la plage de l’hôtel Belles Rives Scott et Zelda Fitzgerald prennent un bain de soleil. Tous les soirs, ils boivent et font la fête avec leurs amis les Murphy et des Américains de passage comme Ernest Hemingway, qui n’a pas toujours eu de barbe, John Dos Passos, Chaplin, gens élégants, célèbres et fêtards. Bien plus tard, ce sera Picasso qui viendra vivre six mois au Château Grimaldi et lèguera à la ville les toiles peintes sur place. Pour l’heure, ce sont « Les Années Folles » et ses fêtes magistrales, reconstituées dans « Gatsby le magnifique » par Fitzgerald. Voilà pour cette période enchantée. Chapelle de la Garoupe

he glorious past of Antibes and Juan-les-Pins did not fall to the bottom of a sparkling swimming pool at the end of an evening. This peninsula is especially well protected from a certain tawdriness which has spread swiftly to a good many places on the Southern coast, retaining aesthetic, sensorial, cultural and festive treasures. Sea, sky, villas and prestigious hotels merge into one another. Shades of blue and gold at the end of the day invite you to the pleasures of evening – high society recreation for some, jazz, and the more intense gold tones of gracefully worn jewellery. You can experience extreme tranquillity, relaxing in villas hidden from inquisitive eyes by natural surroundings, or go and dance in trendy, high-class clubs driven to the beat of hip DJs. To begin, just like the character in “Midnight in Paris” by Woody Allen, let’s go back in time to the ’Twenties to meet figures of the era for whom the “French Riviera” represented paradise on earth. They went there on long holidays or spent part of their lives there. On the beach at Hotel Belles Rives, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald are sunbathing. Every evening, they drink and party with their friends, the Murphys, and Americans passing through, such as Ernest Hemingway (who didn’t always sport a beard), John Dos Passos, and Chaplin – elegant, famous, party-going people. Much later on, it was Picasso who would come to live for six months at Château Grimaldi and bequeath the pictures he painted there to the town. At that time, it was the “Roaring ’Twenties” with its sublime parties, as recreated in “The Great Gatsby” by Fitzgerald. So, there you have it for that enchanted epoch. However, Antibes, drawing on its history which goes back to ancient times, remains a top spot for holidays and tourism.

In the daytime, you can choose to go hiking on the Sentier des Douaniers (custom officers’ route) departing from Chapelle de la Garoupe, and then keeping to the coastline on winding, somewhat challenging paths. The wild landscape between the white limestone cliffs and deep coves will fill you with wonder. You’ll then arrive at the headland, which is occupied by the splendid Villa Eilenroc, owned by Antibes.

VOYAGES // ANTIBES - JUAN-LES-PINS Dans un esprit plus citadin et plus tranquille, la visite de la vieille ville historique d’Antibes, riche de trois mille ans d’histoire, s’impose. Puis, en passant par exemple par Le quartier des safraniers qui embaume les essences méditerranéennes, on peut terminer par la visite du Musée Picasso ancien château Grimaldi où il posa ses chevalets en 46. Plein de ses toiles mais aussi de Nicolas de Staël et d’autres encore. En fin de journée, à l’heure où les lumières se mélangent, pourquoi ne pas aller faire un tour au bastion St-Jaume pour admirer Le nomade, statue qui dresse sa blancheur aérienne et monumentale, tournée vers la mer, invitation au voyage ? Ou bien un autre jour au Port Vauban, où les navires les plus luxueux du monde sont amarrés au Quai des milliardaires, le bien nommé ? ` Si on aime les Musées, il ne faut pas rater le Musée archéologique qui se trouve au bastion Saint-André. Tout le passé prestigieux est ressuscité, de l’antique Antipolis grecque aux trésors amenés par des navires étrusques ou phéniciens. Le soir, c’est assurément à Juan-les-Pins et sa fameuse « fureur de vivre » que ça se passe. Sa vie nocturne est riche et endiablée. L’Eden Casino, les Palaces, le shopping même la nuit, les clubs. Nous vous mettons au défi de vous y ennuyer ! Pour terminer, on ne peut passer sous silence le lien indiscutable entre l’histoire du jazz et Juan-les-Pins. Le festival « Jazz à Juan-les-Pins », qui a démarré en 1960, y a amené tous les grands noms, Sidney Bechet, qui pour la petite histoire s’y maria, Louis Armstrong, Coltrane, Miles Davies, Ella Fitzgerald,… n’en jetez plus ! Et ça continue, la fine fleur d’aujourd’hui et de demain s’y produit. Il y a tant de choses à découvrir que l’on ne peut en faire une liste exhaustive. Ici, les rêves prennent forme entre le bleu améthyste de la mer et l’architecture flamboyante qui lui répond. La Méditerranée nous donne ce qu’elle a de plus spécifique, de plus séduisant, de plus intraitable dans cet écrin luxueux…

You’ll then arrive at the headland, which is occupied by the splendid Villa Eilenroc, owned by Antibes. For more of an urban and less strenuous feel, a visit to the old historic town of Antibes, brimming in three thousand years of history, is a must. Afterwards, as you go through the Quartier des Safraniers which is filled with the fragrance of Mediterranean essences, you can round up with a visit to the Picasso Museum, formerly the Château Grimaldi, where he set down his easels in 1946. It is full of his paintings but there are works by Nicolas de Staël and others. At the end of the day, at the time when daylight hues blend into dusk, why not go and look round Bastion St-Jaume to admire Le Nomade, a statue rising up in monumental ethereal paleness, as it looks out to sea like an invitation to travel. And on another day, you can go to Port Vauban where the most luxurious boats in the world are moored at the aptly-named Quai des Milliardaires (Billionaires’ Quay). If you like museums, don’t miss the Musée Archéologique (Archaeological Museum) which is at Bastion Saint-André. All the prestigious past is brought to life, from ancient Greek Antipolis to the treasures carried by Etruscan and Phoenician ships. In the evening, Juan-les-Pins with its famous “blazing passion for life,” is most definitely where it’s “happening.” Its nightlife is prolific and frenzied. The Eden Casino, luxury hotels, shopping even at night and the clubs – we challenge you to get bored! To finish off, we can’t ignore the undeniable connection the history of jazz has with Juan-les-Pins. The Jazz à Juan-les-Pins Festival, which started in 1960, has invited all the great names: Sidney Bechet, who, for the anecdote, got married there, Louis Armstrong, Coltrane, Miles

Davis, Ella Fitzgerald… I rest my case! And it continues… the cream of today and tomorrow performs at the event. There are so many things to discover that it’s impossible to make an exhaustive list. Here, dreams take shape in between the amethyst-blue of the sea and the flamboyant architecture which blends in with it. In this luxury setting, we have the Mediterranean at its most distinctive, seductive and untameable…

Le Chef Nicolas Rondelli, Niçois d’origine, travaille les produits et se balade entre la tradition française et la cuisine méditerranéenne avec çà et là quelques touches exotiques. The Chef Nicolas Rondelli, who comes from Nice, prepares the produce, drifting somewhere between French tradition and Mediterranean cuisine with a few exotic touches here and there. This former student of Alain Llorca and Francis Chauveau places great importance on using local produce with sublime results. What about a few examples? Seared Langoustines, Cèpe mushroom condiment, tomatoes, tarragon, prepared in Choron sauce style. C’est bien ici que, dès 1925, Scott Fitzgerald auréolé de gloire, le géant de la littérature américaine, s’établit à Juan-les-Pins. A l’époque c’était la Villa Saint Louis, qui devint un point de rencontre de personnalités telles que Rudolph Valentino, Hemingway, Franck Jay Gould, Maurice Chevalier et Pablo Picasso. LA PASSAGÈRE 1 Michelin (Hotel Bellerive) - Juan-les-Pins Hotel Bellerive is an institution on the French Riviera and a piece of history. It was indeed here in 1925 that Scott Fitzgerald, the giant of American literature, basking in the glow of glory, settled in Juan-lesPins. RESTAURANT DE BACON 1 Michelin Cap d’Antibes Qui dit Méditerranée dit poisson de grande qualité et fraicheur dans l’assiette. Pourtant, cet axiome est loin d’être toujours vérifié et tout habitué de la Côte Azur a pu en faire l’amère expérience une fois ou l’autre. Heureusement que restent encore nombre d’établissements où le produit est roi. De Bacon est une vraie institution de la Côte et sa réputation n’est pas usurpée. Dans une salle d’une élégance toute simple avec une magnifique vue sur la Baie des Anges, vous y trouverez le meilleur de la pêche du jour et en premier lieu sa fameuse bouillabaisse qui sera servie devant vous comme il se doit. a Ferrari California a été la première voiture sortant de Maranello à avoir adopté le toit escamotable rigide capable de la transformer de coupé en cabriolet. Produite en 2009, elle a subi en 2014 une première évolution majeure avec le retour d’un moteur Turbo chez Ferrari, 25 ans après la F40 et en 2016 elle évolue encore avec le pack Handling Speciale pour plus de sportivité. Le but est de donner à cette Ferrari la conduite sans doute la plus maniable de toutes les voitures du groupe. La gestion électronique de la conduite est réglable en trois positions Confort, Sport et ESC Off. On laissera cette dernière solution aux pilotes chevronnés et à la piste. Eh oui, car aussi maniable qu’elle soit, la voiture développe quand même 560 CV et un 0-100 km/h en 3,6 secondes ! Un WE en mode relax… actif ! Comme pour tout cabriolet, escamoter le toit et sentir le vent nous invite immédiatement au sentiment des vacances et à la rêverie, d’autant plus que l’audio est de grande qualité sauf… sauf que le son du Turbo nous ramène à une autre réalité. L’envie de pousser la voiture dans ses retranchements sportifs nous reprend immédiatement. Unique petite déception : devoir s’arrêter pour procéder au décapotage. En revanche entre le coffre arrière aux dimensions forcément limitées et les fauteuils, vous aurez l’heureuse surprise de voir un espace judicieusement ajouté qui permet une certaine aisance avec la quantité de bagages à transporter. Parfait pour des vacances à deux dans une ambiance magique pour quelques jours. En définitive la California est une voiture pour qui aime le style Ferrari dans un gant de velours.

he Ferrari California was the first car to come out of Maranello with a folding hard-top which can turn it from a coupé into a cabriolet. Produced in 2009, it underwent its first major update in 2014 with the return of a turbo engine at Ferrari, twentyfive years after the F40. In 2016, it continues to evolve with the Handling Speciale to increase its sports handling. The aim is to give this Ferrari what will undoubtedly be the most highly manoeuvrable handling of any of the group’s cars. Electronic Stability Control can be set to one of three positions: Comfort, Sport or ESC Off. We’ll leave that last option to seasoned drivers and the track. Ah, yes, because as handleable as she is, this car does produce 560 bhp and a 0-100 km/h time of 3.6 seconds! A Weekend with Relaxed Mode… Activated! As with any cabriolet, folding the roof down and feeling the wind in your hair immediately gives you a dreamy holiday feeling – especially with the high quality sound system, except – except that the sound of the turbo brings us back to another reality. One feels the immediate desire to push the car to its sporty limits. The one small disappointment is that you have to stop to put the top down. However, between the boot (with its inevitably limited dimensions) and the seats, you’ll be nicely surprised to see a space which has been wisely added to give you a bit of leeway for luggage. This is perfect for a few days’ holiday for two, conjuring up a magical ambience. So, ultimately, the California is a car for people who like the Ferrari style in a velvet glove. ême s’il y aurait beaucoup à dire sur la sixième génération newstyle de ce cabriolet de la maison de Stuttgart, on doit reconnaître qu’un fil rouge a guidé l’inspiration de la SL depuis le lancement du modèle en 1954 : toutes sont d’une beauté et d’une qualité motrice sans faille ! Un tournant majeur a été la transformation du toit. La toile remplacée par du dur en 2001 lui a donné d’un coup l’apparence d’un cabrioletcoupé. Dans cette nouvelle version, le mouvement d’escamotage, qui débute obligatoirement à l’arrêt, peut se terminer en marche jusqu’à la vitesse de 40 km/h.

Sensations à l’intérieur La qualité des finitions est à la hauteur de la réputation de la marque à l’étoile. Les fauteuils soutiennent parfaitement le dos et un chauffage arrière qui protège le cou vous permettent de rouler en mode cabrio même les journées plus fraiches. In this new version, the top can be raised or put down at up to a speed of 40 km/h, with the procedure needing to be started when the car is at a standstill. What It’s Like Inside The high quality of the fit and finish comes up to the reputation of the brand with the three-pointed star logo. The seats give ideal back support and the air vents at neck level mean you can drive around with the top down even on cooler days. At the Wheel The SL is powerful but handleable, letting you select from various driving modes, ranging from the most relaxed option with active suspension set like a “saloon car,” to the highest performance Sport+ option. This turns the car into a vehicle fit for the race track and capable (in our 500 version) of making the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.3 seconds with a maximum speed electronically limited to 250 km/h! Aside from its magnificent landscapes, high concentration of banks and head offices of multinational corporations, it provides music lovers like us with a plethora of music festivals. The Montreux Jazz Festival needs no introduction… it is undoubtedly one of the best known Jazz, Rock and Blues festivals in the world. Once again this year, three large auditoria will host concerts for two weeks by some of the greatest artists on the planet. These are mostly big, well-known names, but not forgetting the latest discoveries – all to treat us to the best possible listening experience. This is an occasion not to be missed. It would be difficult to choose between the Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Emeli Sandé and Erykah Badu, ex-Roxy Music Bryan Ferry and exBeach Boys Brian Wilson. CHORÉGIES D’ORANGE L’opéra au parfum de Provence Opera with a Touch of Provence

range est une charmante petite ville de Provence. Vous pouvez vous y rendre pour visiter ses vestiges romains mais pour tout mélomane, cette ville rime avec Chorégies et opéra. C’est le plus ancien festival français, inauguré en 1869. Mais ce qui fait sa singularité, c’est surtout le lieu dans lequel il se déroule chaque été : un théâtre antique parfaitement conservé, d’une capacité d’accueil de 8300 personnes et qui possède la rareté d’avoir sauvegardé son « Mur » d’origine, garantie d’une acoustique exceptionnelle. En juillet et en août, pour quelques jours de représentations réparties en général sur quatre soirées d’opéra et deux ou trois soirées de concerts symphoniques ou récitals, ce magnifique théâtre et les terrasses des restaurants qui l’entourent ressuscitent en offrant un spectacle dans le spectacle. En effet, des milliers de personnes se promènent avec leur coussin coloré sous le bras… Cela peut paraître bizarre mais c’est oublier qu’un théâtre romain est bâti en pierre et y être assis pendant trois heures est un exercice… délicat. Mais démocratique. Ici pas de places VIP... Naturellement les opéras joués font toujours partie du grand répertoire car il faut s’assurer de faire salle pleine dans un si vaste auditorium. Les casts sont très souvent d’un haut niveau avec au moins une grande star lyrique. En 2016, nous avons eu la chance d’avoir l’immense Placido Domingo dans la Traviata de Giuseppe Verdi. Qui dit mieux ? C’est une occasion idéale, même pour les non férus d’opéra, de découvrir cet art magique dans un cadre enchanteur qui laissera à coup sûr des souvenir impérissables.

range is a delightful small town in Provence. You can go there to visit the Roman ruins, but for any music lover the town is synonymous with “Chorégies” and opera. Chorégies d’Orange is the oldest French festival. It was inaugurated in 1869. However, what makes the event unique is the place in which it is held every summer: a perfectly preserved ancient Roman theatre, with a seating capacity of 8,300 people. The theatre is rare in that it has retained its original wall, ensuring outstanding acoustics. In July and August, for several days of performances which are generally spread over four evenings of opera and two or three evenings of symphonic concerts or recitals, this magnificent theatre and the terraces outside the surrounding restaurants come to life. They provide a show within a show. Indeed, thousands of people mill around with their colourful cushion under their arm… This might seem peculiar but one must not forget that a Roman theatre is built from stone and sitting there for three hours is a delicate exercise, albeit democratic – there are no VIP seats here! Naturally, the operas performed are always part of the standard repertoire because you need to make sure you have a full house in such a huge auditorium. The cast is often top-notch, with at least one great opera star. In 2016, we were lucky enough to see the wonderful Placido Domingo in la Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi. You can’t say better than that! Even for those who are not crazy about opera, this is the ideal occasion to discover this magical art in a bewitching setting. It’s sure to leave people with a lasting impression.

or twenty-seven years, this event has officially “kicked off” summer, along with its share of festivals which enliven the season in French-speaking Switzerland. Once again, the smallest of the big festivals (or vice versa… if you prefer) will provide a maximum of great musical moments this year on stages built at the edge of Lake Geneva.

Wednesday, 7th June – An Explosive Atmosphere! The contagious energy of Canadian punk-rock group Sum 41 will open the Main Stage, followed by Evanescence. Between these two, Rag’n’Bone Man provides a truly mellow, spine-tingling interlude with his “Human” scale show. The next day, Thursday, the 8th of June, there’s a blend of different rock styles, with Roger Hodgson of Supertramp, whose exhilarating rock-folk tunes have nurtured us all our lives, and Foreigner with their unforgettable anthems. On Friday, the 9th of June, welcome to Caribana Electro Airlines, where fans will travel in “French Touch Class.” On the programme, there’s Klingande, a true follower of tropically-tinged melodic house; Fakear with his soaring samples; and finally, Kungs whose hits have whipped up dancefloors the world over. Artists on Saturday, the 10th of June, draw inspiration from the four corners of the world. Performing at the Lake Stage is country and blues influenced Macaô. Reggae will make its entrance on the Main Stage with Yaniss Odua & Artikal Band. The end of the evening will climax with an artist who needs no introduction: Wyclef Jean, the emblematic figure of American R&B and Hip Hop, and former member of the Fugees. Freshness and sun will be the recurring themes of this last day. On Sunday, the 11th of June, hit factory Alvaro Soler will appear on the Main Stage.
