photo project featured on the cover of the May 2020 issue. I have served as the event photographer for Stroll for the past three years and am so excited to be joining in this additional role!
I’m a branding photographer and owner of Darlene’s Photography and have been serving the DMV area for the last nine years. I love being an entrepreneur and using my knowledge, experience and creative skills to help other business owners tell their stories through images and videos. My services included branding photography, event photography and headshots, and soon will be officially offering marketing services as well.
Hello, Willowsford neighbors! I am thrilled to be joining the team here at Stroll Willowsford. My family and I have had the pleasure of living here since moving to the area six years ago. I can’t wait to help highlight our wonderful community, people and area businesses!
My background is in communications and youth nonprofit management, so I am very excited about working with our amazing Junior Writer Team. And I look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones at some of our upcoming monthly events and gatherings — we’ve got great things planned for the new year!
If you have an idea for our publication or content you would like to see featured, please reach out anytime at billie.rose@n2co.com. Or, I am always up for a stroll around the neighborhood!
As the new social media manager, I will continue the amazing job Mackenzie has done on social media to keep you all engaged. My hope is to also entertain and enlighten you by sharing the wonderful people, stories and things happening within the incredible Stroll community.
If you ever have any creative ideas you’d like to see in our social media community, wanna try a trending Reels dance or just want to say hi, please reach out anytime on Instagram or Facebook, @darlenesphoto, or email me at info@darlenesphotography.com. See you around!
After three great years with Stroll Willowsford, Traci and Hope, I am leaving to work full-time at Stroll sponsor The Virginia Institute for Surgical Arts. I am so happy to have made amazing memories working as the content manager. I have loved meeting you all at events and through our “ultimate networker,” Traci. I will definitely still see you all at future Stroll and Willowsford events throughout the neighborhood and am excited Madison will continue on the Junior Writer Team. If you ever want to come visit, I’d love to see you at The Virginia Institute. I truly couldn’t think of two more amazing people to take my roles — Billie and Darlene — and know this magazine will only continue to get better every year!
Hi, everyone! Many of you may already know me or have seen me around. I’m the one snapping photos of you at the Stroll events. I may have also taken your family photo on your front porch during COVID-19 for the “Porchtrait”
I can’t imagine a more perfect sentiment to explain Stroll Willowsford’s (SW) ultimate mission. It is all about connecting you, both personally and professionally, with your neighbors to foster community and add more value to your lives while also showcasing trusted local businesses who are dedicated to supporting you! #UnityOfCommunity!
Stroll Willowford is your magazine — your stories, your photos and your community! Every single resident is invited to share and be part of bringing your Willowsford community family together through the pages of SW each month, through our 24/7 FPL social media, and through our monthly SW events.
This special “Look Back at 2022” is a photo-filled issue packed full of your neighbors’ heartwarming, inspiring, educational and insightful stories and photos from last year with some exciting new features mixed in. Thanks to all who reached out to be part of Front Porch Living and now Stroll Willowsford, your official Willowsford community publication as of September 2022.
I also want to make sure everyone knows and understands that Stroll Willowsford is made possible each month because of the trusted and dedicated local businesses that are choosing to spend their hard-earned dollars to support the Willowsford community. It’s these businesses, many of whom have come recommended by you and/or are
residents themselves, who are dedicated to earning your trust, your business and your referrals. Please make our SW sponsors a choice whenever you need a product or service, and be sure to thank them for their support of Stroll Willowsford! Let’s #supportlocal and #supportSWsponsors!
On behalf of the SW staff and junior writer team, thank you for your support! We are passionate about bringing you together with your neighbors and look forward to offering you more great content, features, events and resources in 2023 so you truly feel part of something special and make the most of living in the Willowsford community.
So grab a beverage and perhaps a snack of choice and hunker down alone or with the family to enjoy this special issue!
Best, Traci Pasqualone

Budget over several months, the Board passed a FY2023 Budget that raises base assessments only one percent (1%), and includes a one-time reduction in contributions to our reserve accounts (expected for 2023 only). Our common expenses include landscaping, waste/recycling pickup, amenity/ community buildings/common area upkeep, utilities, financial management, legal counsel, insurance, lifestyle programming, other contracted services, and our outstanding staff. Separately, the Conservancy passed their 2023 budget, which included an increase in homeowner assessments of eight percent (8%). The budgets are in the Document Center on the HOA website, www. willowsfordlife.com.
The Playground Improvement Committee made recommendations and three playgrounds will be redesigned: Log Cabin (Grove), Bear Barn Treehouse (Grange) and Lodge Pool (Greens), with additional recommendations expected in 2023.
We had several fun Lifestyle programs in December and have a full slate of events planned for 2023, so read the Weekly email and check Facebook and website calendars so you don’t miss out!
We will be establishing a Strategic Planning Committee to develop our strategic plan during 2023, and encourage volunteers to assist us with establishing our vision, mission, and short- and long-term objectives for our fabulous community. March 2023 brings the Annual Election for the HOA Board, and there are two seats open for two-year terms. If you are interested in learning more about running for the Board, please reach out to any of your resident Board or HOA team members. We look forward to a great year ahead! #UnityofCommunity ~ Mike, Frank, Fred, Skip, Brian

Nature journaling combines observation, science, art, relaxation and fun. Learn the basics so you can continue this enriching practice in your backyard or anywhere in the world. William Wordsworth once said, “Let nature be thy teacher.” With the new Willowsford Nature Journaling Workshop, no experience is necessary or expected.

When: Jan. 25, 2023, noon-1 p.m.
Registration Fee: $25 includes a nature journal and supplies for the winter, spring, summer and fall workshop (future workshop dates TBD). *Please dress for the outdoors, as a portion of the workshop will take place by the lake.
The new year is the perfect time to get outside and explore our beautiful Willowsford community! To reserve your spot, visit willowsfordconservancy.org/event.
A world of infinite beauty and discovery waits just beyond the point where we usually stop paying attention. Nature offers us peace and a rich and meaningful place to learn. No computer program can replicate the richness of seeing a flower up close, the intrigue of geeking out with bugs or the calm of laying on your back and watching clouds. The key to developing a closer connection with nature is deliberately enhancing your powers of observation and wonder. Learn how the methods of a field naturalist will help you notice more, remember what you discovered and be actively curious. A nature journal is a lens that focuses our attention and crystalizes our observations, thoughts and experiences. The system is creative, rigorous and playful, easy to begin and learn, and will grow and mature over a lifetime. — John Muir Laws

February — Owens Family
Radford alums Monica and Tim Owens like Willowsford so much that they’ve already traded in their first home in the Grove for a second one. Their family has grown to include Piper, Lia and Beckett. The Owens’ goal is to keep adding lights to their annual holiday display until they catch up to Monica’s parents. “I grew up with the Griswolds!” Monica laughed.
If you can’t find the Bronaughs, they are probably at a soccer field somewhere. Daughter Kendall and son Patrick both play for FC Virginia, which means Mom and Dad (Jeff and Melissa) spend a lot of time traveling and sitting in the stands. At home, Kendall and Melissa are kitchen wizards, so the whole family stays well-fed. Jeff and Patrick, meanwhile, have bonded while biking on the Willowsford trails.
May — Cavanaugh Family Matt and Teresa Cavanaugh are Midwest transplants who met in New Jersey and finally landed in Willowsford when their careers brought them to Virginia. Their three-generation household includes Teresa’s retired mom, Midge, kids Michael and Kayleigh and dogs Banner and Captain. Banner loves the kids so much that he rides along for school drop-off every morning.
California natives David and Jessica Mendez both have military service in their blood. Jessica grew up in an Air Force family and lived all over as a kid. David joined the Marines after graduating from college and completed several tours of duty in Iraq.
Daughters Deanna and Shelby are both avid swimmers and soccer players. The whole family loves any vacation that takes them to a beach on the Atlantic shore.
In high school, he was a football player and she was a brain. A teacher predicted they would end up together. Twenty-plus years later, the very married Chris and Alissa Turley still laugh about that. After surviving an 8,000-mile trip to Yellowstone and back in a slightly injured RV with sons Chris Jr. and Bradley, the two decided they were ready for anything. They added daughter Ava to the family in 2021.
August — Velusamy Family Vanshikha and Jai Velusamy still put up with good-natured ribbing about ending up happily married despite meeting on a dating app (or, as they call them in India, a matrimonial site) and enduring long-distance (cross-continental!) dating. The modelturned-IT-project manager and the pharmaceutical researcher will celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. Daughters Natara and Natania ensure that the Velusamy home in the Grant never sees a dull moment.
September — Sun Family “Twins plus one” is how Jesse and Christin respond to the question of whether their three kids are triplets. The twins are Collette and Jacqueline. The “plus one” is Jacob, who is quickly catching up to his slightly older sisters. Raising the lively little trio, in addition to maintaining active careers, means that Jesse and Christin make time to recharge their batteries. Christin walks and practices yoga while Jesse golfs and goes fishing.
When Setu’s employer moved her from L.A. to London (culture shock ensued), Chris soon followed. The two fit Western and Hindu wedding ceremonies into the same day and spent the next 10 years loving London while raising sons Kiran and Coen. A need for extended family brought them back to the U.S. and to Willowsford, but they still harbor a not-so-secret desire to return to the flat they still own less than three miles from Buckingham Palace.
After living in six cities in 20 years, Ohio natives Jim and Sarah Lee were happy to plant themselves firmly at Willowford in 2015. The two are parents to Ella and Rae. Ella, who was practically born singing, avidly participates in musicals and vocal groups and has her sights set on Broadway. Rae, who wears a smile wherever she goes, has a strong analytical mind and loves coding, which she hopes to teach to others someday soon.
Professional chef Brendan Heavey now works for the government but will never get cooking out of his system. Erin Heavey always wanted to be a doctor and found her passion in obstetrics/gynecology. She helps moms bring their babies into the world at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. Son Jack shows signs of becoming a studious kid, while younger sister Claire is a rambunctious kid who burns a lot of energy in ballet class and swimming lessons.
When Liz Hineline married Craig DuFresne in 2020, she gained two bonus kids. Craig gained three. The kids range in age from 16 to 5, which means that by the time their oldest graduates from college, the youngest will be in junior high school. Meanwhile, they’re starting new traditions like hosting a huge family Thanksgiving and spending as much time as possible with all five kids, whether traveling or just sitting down to dinner together each night.
Would you like for your family to be featured in an upcoming spotlight? Email Content Manager Billie Rose at Billie.Rose@n2co.com for more information!
Each month, Stroll Willowsford is very proud to feature this meaningful feature that spotlights one truly deserving resident with the honor of being our “Resident Non Sibi” feature. Non sibi is a Latin term meaning “not for oneself,” and it represents the ability to live a life filled with positive energy and concern for others. Frank Stitley and his friend Paul Karsetter were financial professionals that worked for numerous firms before deciding to combine their talents for their own joint venture. They started as the two of them, working out of their homes and utilizing their personal networks to spread the word about their CPA business. “We relied on referrals, and since we did a good job, we got a lot of referrals,” says Frank.
Fast forward to present day — the firm currently serves 600 clients and services the Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., areas.
Paul has now retired from the business but was influential in getting the business to its incredible standing. Frank is now joined by two managing partners, Michelle Hecker and Christie Krouse, at the financial company.
The firm’s business motto is “be of service and maintain the right relationship” in all aspects of their work, from making the right financial choices for their clients to the people that they hire. Whether you’re a small business or an individual, Frank and his team aspire to deliver the same tax and accounting advice to every client as they would for a Fortune 100 company. Their objective is to make everyone more profitable. This can only happen by helping clients make sound financial choices regarding their future.
Their services include income tax preparation, tax planning, business valuation, business entity selection and set-up, financial statement preparation, accounting software sales and installation, retirement planning, investment services and life, health and disability insurance.
If you think your business is too far behind or that you need to meet a standard to meet with them, fear not, says Frank. “You’d be surprised how long people wait to meet with us, and it’s always easier to meet when you aren’t so deep underwater with the IRS.” They meet with folks who are often overwhelmed with bookkeeping and behind on their taxes. “The best thing you can do is just get started,” he says. “Clients can take a breath and know they’re in good hands.”
To put it into perspective, at least a third of their clients come to them behind on taxes. As expected, many feel ashamed to admit it until they realize they aren’t alone. The CPA business owners work tirelessly to earn your trust from the start, as their success is dependent upon your success. As Frank points out, this begins with a truthful discussion about all aspects of a client’s finances. From there, the team can help you attain your financial goals. As these public accountants and business advisors have learned over the years working their profession, you can’t have one without the other.
On a personal note, Frank likes to make it clear to potential clients that he’s not a dry “numbers guy.” In fact, he likes to show his sense of humor. Highlighting his liveliness is a book that he’s written while simultaneously running his successful financial company. The book is titled College Visits: A Parent’s Perspective. Frank is also available for public speaking engagements.
As for his home life, Frank has four adult daughters and lives in Brambleton. He loves his Peloton and enjoys weightlifting and yoga. He misses playing racquetball and hopes to pick up that hobby again soon. He also loves working with his team. They enjoy hosting company events, including ziplining, potlucks and golfing.

Looking back on the first Cornhole for a Cause to benefit the CARES Foundation and a condition our son has called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), it was truly a lifechanging experience.
Talking about your child’s rare disease isn’t typically a topic of conversation at social gatherings, but this event gave us the opportunity to connect with our friends in the community on a deeper level. We cannot thank Willowsford Cares and Mark and Becky Danzenbaker enough for giving us the support and encouragement to be vulnerable and share our story.
My hope was that we could host the event annually, benefiting different causes that affect others in the Willowsford community. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we took two years off, but when I heard about the Libbares family’s struggle with PANDAS, I knew we needed to bring it back. The Libbares family is not alone in dealing with this relatively new disease, as there are others in the community affected by it as well. I hope that by bringing awareness to this cause, those affected will not feel alone but know they have a community that supports them, just like we felt after hosting the first event.
In May of 2016, our family made our long-awaited move into Willowsford. We were so excited about what was in store for our family in our new home and neighborhood. A few months after moving in, we noticed our oldest son, Ari, developed an “eye blinking” tic. After taking him to our pediatrician and
following up with a pediatric ophthalmologist, it was decided that he was probably reacting to the stress of moving into a new home/environment. Ari also began to have recurring respiratory infections throughout the next year and was ultimately diagnosed with asthma. The summer before kindergarten is when we really noticed things changing. On top of the eye-blinking tics that seemed to come and go with sickness, he was also developing extreme separation anxiety. The first day of kindergarten is what we call our moment of truth. The night/day before, he was happy and excited to go to school and ride the bus, and he woke up an entirely different child. Because these behaviors were occurring outside of the home at this point, there was no denying that something more was going on. We were referred to a child
psychiatrist by our pediatrician at the time, and she ended up being our saving grace. After a very long intake, her final question was, “Have you ever seen or pulled a tick off of him?” to which I answered, “Yes, of course, we live in a very wooded community and often find ticks in our own yard.”
She immediately sent us to a functional medicine doctor, and after running some blood tests, he was diagnosed with PANS caused by Lyme and another co-infection
called Babesia. He immediately started prophylactic antibiotics and herbals. By October, with the help of many individuals/support from the school, we were starting to get our boy back little by little.
Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) occur after an infection, most commonly a strep infection. Brain inflammation occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy brain cells, leading to autoimmune processes that affect the central nervous system function. An affected child generally has a sudden, dramatic change in personality, displayed as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety, tics or other abnormal movements, personality changes, a decline in math and handwriting abilities, sensory sensitivities, restrictive eating and more.
Two months later, in January 2019, we welcomed our third child, Grady. We had been noticing some behavior changes in our daughter, Emi, who was 3 at the time. Everyone chalked it up to her “adjusting” to not being the baby of the family anymore. My mama gut told me this was different; in fact, it was screaming to me that we needed to get her evaluated as soon as possible. I took Emi to our pediatrician, and they did agree to swab her for strep; to our surprise, it came back positive. She had no sore throat, no fever, no rash, nothing that would have ever told us she had strep. You see, that’s what PANS/PANDAS does to a child’s immune system. It wreaks such havoc that it no longer knows how to respond “appropriately.” Over the next three months, she was given over five different antibiotics. None of them worked. Our functional medicine doctor decided to try IM injections of penicillin, and it finally did the trick ... for a while. Emi was diagnosed with PANDAS. We thought we had caught it early and were thankful for what we had been through with Ari so that we knew the symptoms to be on the lookout for. We also learned that children can be genetically
Lynn Alexander, DDS Jason Kiangsoontra, DDS, FACP 43761 Parkhurst Plaza, Ste. 132 Ashburn, VA 20147 571-485-2900 www.luxdentalcenter.com
Our team at Lux Dental Center takes great pride in our work, and we especially value our relationships with our patients. We never want our patients to feel like a number, and always want them to feel like they are heard and empowered to make well-informed dental decisions.
As a Willowsford resident-owned business, Dr. Lynn Alexander and Dr. Jason Kiangsoontra feel privileged and grateful to be the dentists of many Willowsford families. We hope to change the way you feel about dentistry, one appointment at a time!
predisposed to PANS/PANDAS, which is the case for our family. I wish I could say that was the end of our journey, but we had a long road ahead of us with our daughter, Emi. For the last four years, she has been fighting to heal her immune system through many different ways of treatment, three T&A surgeries, many different kinds of antibiotics (oral/IV/IM injections), steroids and a few rounds of IVIG. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is a therapy treatment for patients with antibody deficiencies. It is prepared from a pool of immunoglobulins (antibodies) from the plasma of thousands of healthy donors. Immunoglobulins are made by the immune system of healthy people for the purpose of fighting infections. This treatment is typically given over two different days with five to six hours of infusion. It is also a treatment that our insurance company likes to deny, forcing us to spend countless hours on the phone/filling out appeals.
PANS/PANDAS can be extremely isolating for families, especially because children spend most of the available energy “keeping it together” in public and it often seems like an invisible illness. I can assure you it is anything but invisible. As our children have gotten older and understand the hardships this disease has caused our family, they have chosen to make it their goal to help spread awareness so that other children may not have to suffer as long as they have. Early diagnosis is the key to lasting healing. The National Institute of Mental Health brought awareness and recognition of PANS/PANDAS in the ‘90s, and today scientists estimate as many as one in 200 children may have PANS/PANDAS. PANS/PANDAS is not “rare”, it is “rarely diagnosed.” This needs to change, our children deserve better. Please consider helping us in our cause by supporting our Cornhole Fundraiser this Feb. 5 from noon to 4 p.m.
Willowsford Cares is excited to announce our second annual Cornhole for a Cause, this time to benefit the Neuroimmune Foundation and create awareness about PANS/ PANDAS. The event will be held on Sunday, Feb. 5, starting at noon, at Old Ox Brewery. Bring the family and enjoy an afternoon of cornhole, craft beer and games for the kiddos — all to benefit a great cause!
Registration is $100 per team (two players per team) for cornhole participants, and you can specify your teammate or we will match you with someone. Donations are tax-deductible.
To secure your spot, please PayPal $100 to willowsfordcares@gmail.com or Venmo @WillowsfordCares and indicate the players on your team. Space is limited to 40 teams, so sign up today!

Goose Creek Veterinary Hospital aims to please and treats pets and their owners as family. A perfect example of the pet hospital’s superior service is during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital kept its doors open to clients who wanted to come in with their pet. “It is never easy being separated from your pet when taking them to the vet, especially when they are sick,” says Reagan Elliot, the office manager at the hospital. “All throughout lockdown, when a lot of vets closed their doors and only accepted curbside appointments, we kept our doors open.”
Gaining the community’s trust during such a difficult time has made first-time clients now loyal patients to Goose Creek Veterinary Hospital. Elliot says several clients switched over to the practice after seeing the commitment of the veterinary hospital to pets and their families. “We truly care about how our clients and their pets are doing and always do our best to reach out to them if we know they are having surgery or work done at other vets or specialists. We want to make sure they know that we are thinking of them always and care for their pets,” she adds.
There are a few ways the hospital makes owners, along with their pets, feel welcomed. It begins from the moment they walk in the door, where the front desk staff greets families and extends to the back staff, technicians
and doctors. “When our furry patients walk through that front door, we want them to receive the best care they can get,” explains Elliot. “We always try to make even our most nervous pets feel comfortable and welcome,” even if it means bribing them with treats and cuddles to warm up to them, she notes.
The main objective for the team is to ease any fears for the pet or owner. If that means taking things slow and not rushing care, that’s what the staff will do. “With pets coming in for surgeries or other procedures, we always make sure to keep a close eye on them to make sure they recover well in our care.” That often includes giving post-op cuddles and walks around the office when needed. “We always want to make sure our clients and patients leave satisfied with the care that they got,” she says.
The facility is spacious with a recent expansion. The hospital now has six exam rooms and a larger treatment area in the back to accommodate pets and their family members. “We have always been proud of how clean and open we keep our spaces, especially the front lobby, and we have had a lot of clients appreciate the cleanliness.”
No matter the age of your pet, Goose Creek Veterinary Hospital treats all. This includes kitten and puppy care, wellness plans, dental, surgeries, mobile services, in addition to diagnostic care. The staff believes in building a trusting relationship with pet owners and the animal, and the hospital practices minimal and gentle restraint. Willowsford residents, friends and family are invited to experience the care of beloved pets at the hospital, with a promise to not be disappointed. “We are very honored to be sponsored in Willowsford’s

Residents Scott, Liza and their three children, Luke (16) and twins Henry and Evelyn (10), traveled to Athens, Corinth, Crete and Delphi in 2022. One of the most memorable sites that they visited was the Acropolis, which was an ancient citadel above the city of Athens and has many ancient buildings. Henry said, “Greece is fantastic, and there is so much history there!” Another exciting experience was taking the overnight ferry to Crete, which is a big island that takes four hours to go east to west. There they sampled lots of Greek food and amazing Greek wine.
A family favorite was visiting Balos Lagoon on Crete. “There are no words to describe how beautiful Balos Beach
is,” says Luke. They also visited a vineyard and olive grove in Heraklion, Crete, and had fresh olive oil and wine sitting underneath olive trees. Evelyn said, “There is yummy food wherever you go!” They ate lots of Greek salad and pork gyros. Thanks to Scott, who spent 25 years in the army traveling the world, he was able to research on the internet and create a trip that brought them to all the best places. The Fitzgerald family would highly recommend this trip to other Willowsford residents and said, “If you’re even thinking about it, just go!”
