| Board Update

Dear Willowsford Residents,

As we approach 2026, it’s hard to believe how far we’ve come since January 2023, when our current HOA President first announced the formation of a Strategic Planning Committee through Stroll. That initiative led to our 2023 Resident Survey, which became the foundation of Willowsford’s 2023–2028 Strategic Plan. Nearly three years later, we’ve come full circle -- moving from ideas and feedback to tangible plans reflecting that shared vision of our community.

We are excited to share that the Board and management team have developed architectural plans for potential renovations to both clubhouses, a new storage building, and an additional sport court. These capital improvements are an extension of priorities expressed in the 2023 Resident Survey, combined with those of management. However, before any decisions are made, we need your input once again.

Early next year, the 2026 Resident Survey will be released to gather your thoughts on these proposals— particularly whether the community supports the scope and financial investment such an endeavor would require. To ensure residents can make informed decisions, the survey will follow a series of detailed communications and gatherings where plans, costs, and benefits will be thoroughly discussed.

Your participation is essential. The success of our previous survey demonstrated how valuable resident feedback is in shaping Willowsford’s future. Now, as we stand at the threshold of the next phase, your voice will determine how and whether we bring these projects to life.

Thank you for your continued engagement, insight, and enthusiasm for keeping Willowsford a vibrant, connected, and forward-looking community.

AUTUMNFEST RECAP

WILLOWSFORD HOA’S ANNUAL AUTUMNFEST returned this October with gorgeous weather, bringing neighbors together for a day of fall fun, food, and community spirit. Guests were welcomed by the lively sounds of Moose Jaw Bluegrass, setting a festive tone for an afternoon full of activities. Families enjoyed the Photo Booth Bus, lawn games, and classic face painting, while the sweet aroma of caramel apples at the dipping station delighted everyone. Creative energy was on display at the Willowsford Conservancy Booth, where children and adults crafted pumpkins to celebrate the season.

For adults, the Biergarten offered locally curated beer and cider, while guests could savor Picnic Boxes by Willowsford Kitchen amid the crisp fall air. Later in the day, staff handed out refreshing apple cider, a perfect seasonal treat to round out the festivities. The event was made possible thanks to generous support from Golden Rule Builders, Rock

WILLOWSFORD HOA

“We had such a great time returning for our second Willowsford event! It was a joy to see all the creative ways our yardsticks were put to use and to watch the kid’s practicing safety in their GRB hardhats. We’re so grateful for the warm welcome from the residents and the many great project conversations we shared. Already looking forward to the next one!”

Stone & Sand Yard, and Independence Landscape, helping to create a memorable celebration for all ages. AutumnFest highlighted the sense of community and togetherness in Willowsford. From the Photo Booth Bus and lawn games to music, crafts, and seasonal treats, the event showcased the talent and creativity of neighbors, leaving families with smiles, memories, and a true taste of fall in Willowsford.

SALT SMART THIS WINTER

As winter settles in, we all know the routine: snow falls, ice forms, and out comes the road salt. A sprinkle here and there helps keep driveways, sidewalks, and roads safe. But did you know that too much salt can drastically harm our local streams and drinking water? When snow and ice melt, the salt we’ve spread doesn’t just disappear. It washes into storm drains and flows into our streams. Over time, it builds up in the water, threatening fish, frogs, and insects that depend on clean, fresh streams.

This doesn’t mean we should cease using salt all together, it just means we need to salt smartly! A little care and a few simple changes can make a big difference in keeping both people and waterways safe all winter long.

Smart Salting Tips

1. Shovel first. The sooner you clear snow, the less ice forms and the less salt you’ll need.

2. Sprinkle, don’t dump. A light scattering is all you need. You only need about one coffee mug’s worth of salt for a typical driveway!

3. Sweep it up. Once the ice melts, sweep up leftover salt so it doesn’t wash into the storm drain. Plus you can reuse it later!

Willowsford Conservancy participates in Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s Salt Watch Program to monitor salt levels in some of our streams in our community but need more volunteers to expand our monitoring! Training is easy and the kits are free. If you might be interested in becoming a Salt Watch Volunteer, scan the QR code on this page to learn how to get involved.

Willowsford Farm Produce Fund

New Partnership with the Dulles South Food Pantry Growing Healthy Food and Stronger Communities

Earlier this year, Willowsford Farm and the Dulles South Food Pantry (DSFP) partnered together to launch the Willowsford Farm Produce Fund, a new initiative designed to increase access to fresh, nutritious, and locally grown food for families in need in our corner of the county. This Fund enables DSFP to purchase organic produce directly from Willowsford Farm at a discounted wholesale rate, supplementing the Pantry’s annual budget and expanding their capacity to serve the community. Every donation to the Fund directly supports DSFP’s mission of ensuring no neighbor goes hungry. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit managing the Fund, donations to DSFP are fully tax deductible and 100% of the amount donated goes directly to serving families experiencing food insecurity by providing fresh food and essential items.

On a crisp evening in October, Willowsford Farm, in partnership with Stroll Willowsford, hosted Wine Down

for a Cause at the Willowsford Farm Stand — with wine tastings, live music, community connection, and missiondriven fundraising to launch this new initiative. With their donation to the fund, attendees enjoyed wine tastings from eight local wineries (including Cana Vineyard & Winery owned by Willowsford residents), kid’s activities, a silent auction, and evening shopping at the Farm Stand. In total, the event raised over $5,700, kicking off the Fund.

Through this partnership, the Pantry can immediately provide more wholesome, nutrient-rich produce such as leafy greens, root vegetables, and other seasonal favorites to those who need it most. This collaboration builds upon Willowsford Farm’s ongoing commitment to hunger relief. Since 2021, the Farm has donated over 30,000 pounds of vegetables and eggs to DSFP and Loudoun Hunger Relief—including 11,167 pounds in 2024 alone.

By supporting the Willowsford Farm Produce Fund, which will be open on an ongoing basis to keep supporting DSFP, you’re helping cultivate a healthier

and more connected community. A $75 donation, for example, could provide a family with a bunch of carrots or a bag of leafy greens on each visit for an entire year. Your donations go two fold, they support the Farm’s bottom line but also enable DSFP to supplement their existing operating budget so they can reallocate funds for produce to protein or diapers increasing their impact. If you are interested in supporting this effort, please make a donation below. If you would like to discuss making a corporate donation, or offering a matching gift, please contact Sophie Lambert at slambert@willowsfordconservancy.org.

To see how our community came together to launch the Willowsford Farm Produce Fund, turn to “Pouring for a Purpose” on page 40 for more photos, sponsors, and highlights from Wine Down for a Cause.

Yappy holidays from Baylee!

(FOUR-LEGGED) RESIDENT

THIS FEATURE SPONSORED BY ADAM HUKE WITH CASSADAY & COMPANY, INC.

Happy howlidays, fellow 4 leggers and their humans of Willowsford. My name is Baylee Maximus, or Baymax, for short. I live in the Greens, but funny fact, my skin is blue. I’m what they call a blue skin doodle. Some of you may have heard me welcome you to my part of the ‘hood. I’m all bark from behind my fence, my mom says. As you can see, I’m fashion-forward and I’m a Packer fan too. I bark green and gold.

I’m always happy and ready to hit the Willowsford trails, especially when my girl comes home from college. I miss her so much when she’s at school. Good thing my mom and dad are here to hang with me. I take care of them while my girl is away. So, have a wonderful howliday season, and a very happy New Year to everyone, great and small!

I’m a good boy, Baylee

Set in Stone, Styled for the Seasons

The Vlasto family’s stunning new patio proves that great design starts with good listening—and ends with lasting beauty.

start. That’s when we turned to Kim at Deckscapes of Virginia. From the beginning, he offered thoughtful ideas, listened carefully to our preferences, and was honest about what would be over the top versus what we actually needed. Unlike some other designers, Kim never pushed unnecessary features or materials.

Visiting their nearby location was a game-changer. We didn’t just pick from a catalog—we could see the stone in person, observe how it weathered, and explore landscaping examples to visualize how different plants would look around the patio.

Communication throughout the project was seamless. They even set up a group chat to keep us updated on scheduling and progress. On top of that, they handled all the HOA documentation—our only task was dropping it off—and Willowsford approved it without any issues.

The lighting Kim suggested was the perfect finishing touch, creating an inviting atmosphere we didn’t even know how to achieve on our own. A year later, we’re still enjoying a high-quality patio with beautiful landscaping that looks as good as the day it was installed.

Being a proud Stroll Willowsford sponsor for Modera Wealth Management means being part of a network of neighbors and local businesses supporting each other. It’s been a pleasure to share the beautiful work Deckscapes created for our family.

Smiling, relaxed, and living out something we dreamed up together months earlier,” Jen shares. “I’ve had clients get engaged at Universal with a Golden Snitch ring box, or a multigenerational family trip commemorate their first trip to Disney with a group photo in front of the castle. When I see the joy in those

moments—when they tell me it was the best trip of their lives—that’s when I know it was Marvelous.” The photos, messages, and testimonials I receive from clients are a constant reminder of the meaningful role I play in helping them design vacations that become cherished memories for years to come.

THE ART OF LISTENING

Jen’s approach is rooted in genuine connection and curiosity. She’s constantly training, traveling, and staying plugged into a global network of travel professionals. But her true secret? Listening—really listening—to her clients. “Sometimes what they say they want and what they truly want are different things,” Jen explains. “I pick up on those subtle hints and use them to craft experiences that surprise and

delight. Those personal touches turn a great vacation into a story they’ll tell forever. Many people simply don’t know what they don’t know. As a travel planner, I take pride not only in curating itineraries that reflect what my clients are looking for, but also in offering suggestions and hidden gems they may

not have even known existed. It’s through meaningful conversations that I’m able to uncover those special details and make personalized recommendations— something no booking engine can ever replicate.”

INSIDER TIPS AND HIDDEN GEMS

Known as a Universal Insider, Jen has literally written four best-selling books on visiting the parks, both in Orlando and Hollywood. Her expertise goes beyond the basics, offering clients access to hidden gems and expert tips.

Jennifer has personally stayed at and toured every Universal Orlando Resort property, allowing her to provide tailored recommendations that align perfectly with each client’s needs. Her extensive hands-on experience—combined with annual training and frequent park visits— makes her a trusted expert in crafting seamless, personalized vacations. Beyond resort and attraction knowledge, Jennifer is also well-versed in Universal Orlando’s diverse dining options. She guides clients with special dietary requirements or food allergies toward safe and satisfying meal choices.

In addition, she has planned vacations for families with both cognitive and physical special needs, drawing on her deep understanding of how to navigate the parks in a way that ensures everyone enjoys their experience.

Providing this level of personalized care is something Jennifer takes immense pride in, knowing that planning a vacation—especially when dietary restrictions or disabilities are involved— can feel overwhelming. Her compassion, expertise, and attention to detail help every client feel confident, supported, and truly included in the magic of their vacation.

“My top tip is to make use of early park admission if you’re staying onsite— that’s when you can walk right onto Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure or VelociCoaster before the crowds hit,” she advises. “For something most guests miss, I love the secret spell spots in Diagon Alley and the lesserknown photo ops, like catching the Knight Bus driver outside King’s Cross for a fun character moment. And if you’re a foodie, don’t sleep on the cocktails at Strong Water Tavern at Sapphire Falls Resort— it’s a hidden gem for adults to unwind after a park day.”

CURATING EUROPEAN ADVENTURES

Europe can be overwhelming, but Jen’s curated approach ensures travelers experience both the highlights and the hidden treasures. “I work closely with trusted local partners who elevate each trip with authenticity and ease, so my travelers never feel like tourists — they feel like insiders,” she explains. “My approach starts with truly getting to know my clients: what excites them, what pace they enjoy, and what kind of memories they want to bring home,” she says. “From there, I curate experiences that blend must-see highlights with hidden gems, such as a private food tour through the markets of Barcelona or a sunrise hot air balloon ride over Marrakech for a babymoon couple.”

YOUR INSIDER AT SEA

Jen’s love for cruising and commitment to her clients have earned her recognition from top cruise lines—including Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Virgin Voyages— solidifying her reputation as one of the industry’s leading cruise specialists.

She says her love for cruising began the moment she stepped onto a ship and realized it was a floating resort that whisked her to incredible destinations— without ever having to repack her suitcase.

Jen uses her first-hand experience to help clients find the perfect voyage. When clients work with her, they should feel at ease as they’re receiving insider advice that will make their cruise both seamless and truly unforgettable. With extensive training and firsthand experience across multiple cruise lines, Jen pairs deep product knowledge with a keen understanding of each client’s needs— ensuring every traveler is matched with the perfect cruise experience.

“Over the years, I’ve sailed with many different cruise lines, from familyfriendly to ultra-luxury, and that firsthand knowledge helps me match clients with the right experience for them personally,” Jen notes. “Whether it’s choosing the best cabin location, knowing which ports are worth exploring, or finding the exclusive retreat onboard, I take all the guesswork out,” explains Jen.

When a client chooses to work with Jen at Marvelous Mouse, they’re redefining what it means to travel. With a blend of expertise, intuition, and heartfelt listening, Jen ensures every journey is more than just a change of scenery—it’s a new chapter in her clients’ stories.

Willowsford Brothers Return to Ford’s Theatre for a D.C. Holiday Classic

This holiday season, Willowsford residents William and Harrison Morford once again take the stage at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., performing in the Theatre’s beloved annual production of A Christmas Carol.

The Ford’s tradition, now in its over 40th year, has become one of the region’s most cherished holiday experiences, bringing Charles Dickens’s timeless story of generosity and redemption to life for audiences of all ages. Directed by Michael Baron, the “musically highspirited and infectiously jolly” (The Washington Post) production features Craig Wallace as Ebenezer Scrooge, a talented professional ensemble, and a spirited children’s company that includes the Morford brothers.

This marks William and Harrison’s third major D.C. professional production. Both made their debut at Ford’s in 2023 and went on to perform last year in Leopoldstadt at the Shakespeare Theatre Company, earning acclaim for their focus and depth.

For the 2025 run of A Christmas Carol, William will portray Peter Cratchit, while Harrison returns to multiple roles, including Turkey Boy and Boy Scrooge, the very same parts his brother played in 2023.

“Ford’s feels like home now,” William says. “It’s where everything started for us, and I love getting to be part of something that makes people happy every year.”

Harrison says, “I love being in this show because it’s fast and exciting. You never get bored, you’re always moving or doing something cool. It’s also a story people love with a great message for the holidays.”

“The boys are learning that theatre isn’t just about performing, it’s about connecting,” says their mother, Emily Morford. “They’ve seen how this show touches people’s hearts every year. It’s such a joy to watch them on this historic stage. I’m so proud of them.”

Performances of A Christmas Carol run November 20 through December 31, 2025, at Ford’s Theatre, 511 Tenth Street NW, Washington, D.C. Tickets are available at www.fords.org. If you’d like to attend the show when the boys are on stage, email the Morfords at threelightscreative@gmail.com for their specific show dates.

Pouring for a Purpose:

Willowsford neighbors raise funds and fun at the Farm Stand!

It was one of those perfect fall evenings at the Willowsford Farm Stand—golden light, good music, and great company. Neighbors gathered for Wine Down for a Cause, co-hosted by the Willowsford Conservancy and Stroll Willowsford, to enjoy wine, food, and fun while supporting a meaningful new effort: the Willowsford Farm Produce Fund, created in partnership with the Dulles South Food Pantry. Learn more about this initiative in the Willowsford Conservancy’s article on page 22.

Guests sampled pours from eight favorite local wineries— Boxwood Estate, Cana Vineyards, Fabbioli Cellars, Fleetwood Farm, Greenhill, Old Farm at Hartland, Slater Run, and Williams Gap—while the Lenny Burridge Duo played live music that set the perfect relaxed mood. Killer Tomato Pizza kept everyone well-fed, and kids joined in the fun too, thanks to creative crafts from The Magic Art Bus and a lawn full of classic games like cornhole, Giant Jenga, and Connect 4.

The evening also featured a silent auction packed with exclusive experiences and local finds, many donated by trusted Stroll Willowsford sponsors and other generous neighborhood businesses. By the end of the night, the event had raised more than $5,700 to support the Dulles South Food Pantry Produce Fund, helping provide fresh, local food to families in need.

As guests lingered over one last tasting or picked up fresh Willowsford produce from the Farm Stand, the feeling of community was unmistakable. Wine Down for a Cause was more than just a night out—it was a celebration of neighbors coming together to do good, and a reminder of the generosity that makes Willowsford shine.

Kyle and Molly Cragg’s story began at Radford University, where they met in college and started building a life full of love, adventure, and purpose. After graduation, Kyle joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Bragg before transitioning to civilian life in Northern Virginia. For the past ten years, he’s worked in KPMG’s management consulting practice, helping organizations grow and adapt to change.

Five years ago, the couple made their home in The Grove section of Willowsford, drawn by the community’s sense of connection and family-friendly atmosphere.

Molly spent nearly a decade teaching first and third grade before stepping away from the classroom to focus on raising their three young children. While home with her kids, she stumbled upon a new passion that would grow into something unexpected — baking sourdough bread. What began as a creative outlet soon became a thriving small business, now called Rising with Molly. From crusty sourdough loaves to other artisan creations, Molly has built a

loyal following throughout Willowsford. “The support from this community has been incredible,” she says. “I’ve loved every minute of sharing my bread with neighbors and friends.”

Their three children bring nonstop energy and joy to the household. Mason, ten, is a sports enthusiast who plays football with neighborhood friends and travel lacrosse for Virginia Lacrosse Club. Six-year-old Leni is following in his footsteps, starting her own lacrosse journey and cheering for Dulles Youth Sports. Three-year-old Owen is the family’s spirited youngest and always on the sidelines, cheering for his siblings, waiting for his own turn on the field.

When they’re not at practices or games, you’ll find the kids outside with friends, soaking up what Molly calls “the best part of Willowsford … growing up surrounded by a tight-knit community.”

No story about the Craggs would be complete without mentioning their beloved black Labrador retriever, Reveille, their “first baby.” Named after the Army’s morning bugle call, Reveille has been with the couple since their

dating days. “She’s been through every major milestone — getting engaged, married, moving homes, and welcoming each of our kids,” says Molly. After beating cancer at just four years old, the now 12-year-old “gentle giant” continues to be the heart of the family.

When asked what season of life they’re in, Molly smiles. “We’d say we’re right in the thick of it. Life feels busy, full, and sometimes hard with young kids and a calendar packed with sports and activities. But we know this is a fleeting season, and one day we’ll look back and miss the chaos, noise, and sweetness of it all.”

The last few summers have been especially memorable for the Craggs who have joined their Willowsford friends for a memorable trip to the Outer Banks. One huge beach house filled with more than 30 kids and 20 adults has been the highlight of their summer.

Fun, active, and full of life, the Cragg family embodies everything that makes Willowsford special: a community where families grow, neighbors connect, and new passions rise.

The Doctor Is In… Your Living Room

Willowsford

kids get top-notch care without leaving home, thanks to Dr. Nina Niu.

For Willowsford resident Dr. Nina Niu, pediatrics isn’t just a job, but a passion. After 11 years as a general pediatrician in Chantilly, she made the leap to Pediatric Housecalls, where she could bring healthcare directly to children and their families. She loves working with kids and appreciates the opportunity to care for the whole family while focusing on keeping children healthy.

Unlike a traditional clinic, house calls are all about urgent care. For example, if a child is sick, Dr. Nina is there, often with more time to spend with each family than a busy office visit would allow. She says that being in a home creates comfort, helps families feel at ease, and gives her the time to fully answer questions and solve issues on the spot.

Of course, it also comes with challenges. Alone in the field, she manages everything from exams to tests. But years of experience and a knack for working with kids make it possible. She brings all the equipment she needs so care is just as thorough as it would be in a clinic, while making the experience more personalized for the child.

House calls have a special impact on families with children who have specific needs. By being on time, giving families the time they need, and tailoring advice to their environment, she makes care personal and practical. From safety tips to health guidance that fits a home’s routine, her approach is hands-on and family-focused.

For students dreaming of a medical career, Dr. Nina advises gaining real-world experience to explore the career. Volunteering, job shadowing, and other opportunities in the field of medicine can be beneficial. Because medicine is challenging, she believes it is important to stay goal-oriented and patient, as there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Dr. Nina’s journey shows that medicine isn’t just about treating illness, but about connecting with families and bringing care to where it’s needed most. In her hands, a doctor’s visit isn’t just an appointment; it’s a personalized experience that makes children and parents feel truly seen and cared for. If you’re looking for compassionate, personalized pediatric care without leaving home, reach out to your neighbor, Dr. Nina—she’s right here in Willowsford and ready to help!

Relax.

HOMEGROWN & HANDMADE:

From coffee and crafts to critters and kids, Willowsford’s Harvest Market was full of local flavor and community spirit.

Willowsford Farm wrapped up the season with its annual Harvest Market, a festive farewell to the Farm Stand year. The air was filled with the scent of freshly ground coffee and the sounds of live music, while neighbors browsed booths featuring local farm partners, creative makers, and plenty of tasty treats and drinks. Many of the booths were run by talented Willowsford residents—including kids!—showcasing an impressive array of handmade goodies. With a petting zoo, handcrafted goods, and smiles all around, it was a pictureperfect celebration of community—kid- and dog-approved!

Mental Health and Wellbeing in the School Setting

Wakefield School

Schools are associated first and foremost with academic preparation–but in both schools and families, an increasingly examined subject today is how we balance the changing world, a college-prep academic program, and the mental and emotional wellbeing of our students. Where and how does student wellbeing intersect with other components of a contemporary and whole education?

For Dr. Amrit Daryanani, Director of Student Services and Wellness at Wakefield School in The Plains and known there as “Dr. D,” the role for wellbeing is not to intersect with other components, but to surround them.

“Wellbeing is almost the white space around academics,” she says. “We have concern for the overall wellbeing of our students, and that touches on so many different domains in their lives. Without wellbeing, academics is much harder! So this is an important area for us to consider here at school.”

Responsive vs. proactive

As schools seek to use their resources wisely in creating a healthy environment for students, they must balance being responsive to problems when they arise for individual students with being proactive, equipping students with the resilience and tools to understand, examine, and manage their own wellbeing, and thereby forestalling many problems in the first place.

“We have to have a counseling component that is ready to respond to problems, because in our world today, any news outlet is happy to share that there are a lot of problems right now in mental health, for all of us,” says Dr. D. “The other piece, though, of being more proactive, is also a beautiful piece that is continuously unfolding.”

According to Dr. D, “We approach wellness here from looking at many different domains…there’s the physical domain of wellness, there’s the emotional domain, there’s the cognitive domain, and the spiritual domain–and for those uncomfortable with the word ‘spiritual,’ just drop in the words ‘meaning’ and ‘purpose!’... So considering all the new research that’s coming to us on wellness [and on] the interconnectedness of the different domains, all of this informs us in continuously trying to adapt our programming and our support systems here on campus for our students.”

“Mental Health First Aid”

students to have lots of options for mentorship…[so] supporting faculty in being able to provide mentorship around issues of wellness and self-care is really important,” she says.

How do we help create a community of students who are vigilant about their own mental health and well-being? This ties to the idea of identity formation, an essential task of adolescence. MHFA encourages both faculty and students to share in this important step.

Dr. D thinks that one of the important steps Wakefield has taken is to train all of its faculty in “Mental Health First Aid” (MHFA), an evidence-based, early-intervention course that teaches participants about mental health and substance abuse challenges, sponsored by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

“MHFA gives us a community of adults that is accessible…we want for

“MHFA emphasizes that self-care is an important component of wellness, and that faculty need to not only talk about it, but do it, and model it!” says Dr. D. “It’s an important piece of how we support students on their own journey to wellness.”

Volunteering

According to Dr. D, one of the most beneficial things a school can do to increase well-being is emphasizing to the students the importance of volunteering–and doing it with them!

“We can all help our students develop the skills and tools that help them become wellrounded, warmhearted adults.”
DR. AMRIT DARYANANI

“That piece of doing it with them is so key,” says Dr. D. “There is a sense of community and of comradeship that is built when you work together towards a positive end, and for something that students resonate with–something that truly interests them in terms of serving. One thing that I think families could do to really foster wellness is active volunteering together.”

Dr. D sponsors two ongoing volunteer efforts for Wakefield’s Upper School students: at the Middleburg Humane Foundation, and through the “Wood Ministry” at Grace Church in The Plains, helping elderly or infirm community members manage their firewood.

Volunteering, Dr. D emphasizes, is not just going out there to help–it’s not “one and done.”

“Volunteering on a regular basis is to enter into a relationship with an organization, and with all of the beings, whether they be human or animal or environmental, that that organization serves,” she says. “It’s a very deep and thoughtful process when it’s done with intention, and over time, and with support, and with follow-up.”

Dr. D also emphasizes that supporting an organization where groups of students are actively volunteering together over time goes back to that idea of identity formation. “...We want identity to be formed through positive relationships with others...I can tell you that every student who has gone with me to Middleburg Humane and has had the experience of soaking chickens, lice-covered chickens, in buckets of water…that is a bonding experience they will never forget! We have spent hours and hours sitting on straw bales in stalls, holding chickens in buckets of warm, medicated water. Community building for sure!”

TEE-RIFIC TIMES AT

PLAY THE PAR

For the Stroll Junior Writer Meeting in October, we visited Play the Par Social Club. It is located in Leesburg and recently opened in late September. After we talked about articles and played a quick game of “Guess the Feature”, we explored all that the social club has to offer. Play the Par has six virtual bays for golf and an additional multisport bay with couches for games like bowling and soccer. There is even a separate area dedicated to Nintendo games!

The owners of Play the Par are Ryan Feltman and Pete Holler. They have created a friendly and welcoming environment for their guests, whether they are working on improving their swing, or just want to socialize with friends. Best of all, Play the Par encourages kids to join in the experience!

“One thing I like about Play the Par is how they have various sport options that you can play, like golf, hockey, football, and more,” said Junior Writer Kiana.

“As a professional, this would be a great corporate event space! As a parent, I’d host a birthday party here!” RESIDENT DALLAS MCLAUGHLIN

“You can do any sport you want, and the atmosphere is relaxed and happy!” added Evelyn.

Scarlett observed, “I like the set up because it is very cozy!” They also offer a variety of food and drinks. I sampled the pizza and pretzels, and both were delicious!

Play the Par was a perfect location for the Junior Writer Meeting. Everyone enjoyed themselves and had a blast playing the different games that they offer. Because Play the Par is indoors, it is a year-round destination. It’s also a perfect spot for parties and business events! Play the Par is a great place for both kids and adults to relax and have fun! For more information, visit www. ptsocialclub.com.

GOING BANANAS AT THE BALLPARK

A Willowsford family enjoys every play

Watching the Savannah Bananas in Washington, DC, with the whole family was an absolute blast! From the moment we walked into the stadium, there was this electric, contagious energy that just pulled everyone in. We danced in the stands, sang along with the crowd, and laughed nonstop at all the crazy antics on the field. The players weren’t just playing baseball — they were putting on a full-on show, and it felt like we were part of it.

The crowd engagement was off the charts — from the Banana Nanas (the dancing grandmas!) to the Banana Pep Band blasting fun tunes, every single moment was designed to entertain. It didn’t matter if you were a die-hard baseball fan or didn’t know a single rule; the fun was impossible to resist.

I don’t think we could’ve wiped the smiles off our faces even if we tried. It wasn’t just a game — it was an experience, and sharing it as a family made it all the more special. Definitely a memory we’ll be talking about for a long time.

Khow Suey

Submitted by Kiana Gulati

Khow Suey is this amazing Burmese noodle dish with a creamy, spiced coconut milk soup and a bunch of toppings you can mix in however you like. It’s kind of a flavor explosion in every bite. In the Gulati house, it’s our go-to comfort food once the weather gets cold—we make it every year, and honestly, the second you dig in, it just warms you right up.

Ingredients

• 1 pack of egg noodles

• 2 medium chicken breasts

• 6-7 cloves garlic

• 2 medium white onions (one chopped and the other minced)

• 1.5 cans of coconut milk

• 2-3 tbsp of chickpea flour

• Salt to taste

• Lime wedges

• 8-9 green chillies chopped

• 5 tbsp of chilli oil

• 1 cup of chopped cilantro

• 1 tsp of red chilli powder (or paprika if you want your Khow Suey to be mild)

• 2 tbsp of cooking oil

Preparation

1. Boil the chicken breasts with 2-3 cups of water & salt. Shred the chicken into small pieces and keep the stock aside.

2. In a heavy bottom add 1 tbsp of regular cooking oil & chopped garlic, saute until golden.

3. Add minced onion and saute until golden.

4. Add 1 tsp of red chilli powder ( or paprika), salt & throw in the shredded chicken. Mix until nicely done.

5. Add in the chicken stock & 3 cups of water.

6. Let it boil & then add the chickpea flour and cook for 10 minutes.

7. Now to prepare the toppings, chop cilantro, finely chop the white onion, & green chillies.

8. Chili oil can be made by heating up the oil, adding minced ginger garlic, fry for 2 minutes, switch off the flame & add paprika.

9. Put all the toppings in condiment bowls.

10. Lower the heat & pour the coconut milk and salt in the soup & let it come to a boil.

11. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the instructions on the packet.

Our mom has been making this cake for more than 25 years, every Christmas, and a few years ago, we started helping her! It’s one of our favorite desserts, and the whole family looks forward to it at the holidays. We usually make the meringue mushrooms a few days ahead, and everyone snacks on the leftovers as a bonus treat. Fun tip: you can carve your initials in the tree right before sprinkling on the powdered sugar!

Ingredients for the cake

• 1 box angel food cake mix

• 1.5 tbsp cocoa powder

• 1/2 cup powdered sugar

• 2 cans milk chocolate frosting

Directions for the cake

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom of jelly roll pan with parchment or wax paper.

2. Mix angel food cake as directed on box, and add in cocoa powder while mixing. Pour into pan and bake 15 minutes or until set.

3. While cake is baking, spread out two or three clean, lint-free flour sack towels on counter and dust with powdered sugar. When cake is done, immediately turn pan upside down onto dish towels and using a butter knife, slowly remove the cake from the pan. After cake is

released from pan, peel the paper from the back of the cake.

4. Roll the cake up width-wise (so that it’s a short roll) with the dish towels. Allow to cool completely. When cool, unroll and spread filling over cake, within 1 inch of the edges. Re-roll without the dish towels and place seam-side down on a serving dish.

5. Ice with chocolate frosting (you may not use the full two cans). When the cake is completely frosted, use an offset spatula to run back and forth against icing to give appearance of tree bark texture. Place meringue mushrooms all along sides and top of cake, and dust entire cake with powdered sugar for a snowy effect. Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients for the filling

• 1 box chocolate instant pudding mix (3.4 oz)

• 2 tsp cocoa powder

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1 dash salt

• 2 cups Cool Whip

Directions for the filling

1. Combine all ingredients and stir until blended thoroughly. Spread over inside of cake.

Ingredients for the meringue mushrooms

• 4 egg whites

• 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

• 1 cup sugar

• 1 tbsp cocoa powder

• 2 oz milk chocolate squares or chips

Directions for meringue mushrooms

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat together egg whites and cream of tartar on high speed until soft peaks form.

3. Gradually add sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.

4. Spoon egg white mixture into a large pastry bag with a 1/2 inch tip (or a large zip top baggie with a corner cut off).

5. Pipe mixture into round, wide mounds on baking sheet, each about 1 1/2 inches in diameter, to resemble mushroom caps. Pipe remaining mixture upright onto baking sheets, in thin, tall towers of about 1 inch, to resemble mushroom stems.

6. Using a spatula, smooth the tops of the mushroom caps. Sift cocoa powder over caps.

7. Bake meringues until crispy and dry, about 2 hours. Turn oven off and let meringues cool completely in oven.

8. Melt chocolate over stove top or in microwave over low heat. Spread underside of caps with melted chocolate and attach stems. Place mushrooms upside down and allow chocolate to set, about one hour.

Aquatic Wildlife Discovery in Willowsford

I love all of the fun activities the Willowsford Conservancy hosts, but the Aquatic Wildlife Discovery is my favorite! My family has attended Willowsford’s Aquatic Wildlife Discovery for the past three years, and I learn something new each time!

We meet up at the Farmstand and walk to a nearby a stream off of the Farmstand Loop trail, which is part of the Lenah Run - Broad Run Watershed. The Lenah Run - Broad Run Watershed is within the Potomac Watershed, so the stream will drain into the Potomac River, eventually draining into the Mid-Atlantic Region Watershed and out into the ocean. We borrowed fishing nets from the Conservancy to find “creek creatures” in the stream to help determine its water quality. After studying identifying the types of creatures we found, we came to the conclusion that the creek was doing well, which is awesome!

Our Conservancy Ranger, Emily Lawrence, and our Program and Engagement Coordinator, Sarah Uhrig, answered a few questions about our stream and the importance of monitoring its water quality:

Why do you think it’s important to monitor the water quality of a stream?

Emily: It’s important to monitor our water quality because we all depend on water to survive! Water is an essential part of all life and polluted water can have a negative impact on not only people, but animals and plants. If we don’t monitor our water

quality, we may not know if our water is healthy or not. By monitoring our waterways, it allows us the opportunity to identify and hopefully address any issues with pollution.

How does pollution impact our creeks?

Emily: Pollution impacts our creeks in many ways. When pollutants like fertilizers, pesticides, oil, and trash get into our creeks, it first impacts

the most sensitive creatures like our macroinvertebrates, fish, and amphibians who spend so much time in that water. Pollutants can lead to issues like decreased oxygen and upset the delicate chemical balance of water making it difficult to downright impossible for wildlife to survive in it. These impacts will travel up the food chain and can

end up dramatically altering the biodiversity of an entire area.

Does poor water quality of a creek impact the bay/river/ocean it runs into?

Emily: The short answer is yes! Our water systems are all connected, from the small creeks right here in our community to our oceans and rivers that are hundreds of miles away. The water from our creek will eventually end up in the ocean, alongside any pollutants it picks up along the way. This can result in issues like habitat loss in our rivers and estuaries, algal blooms from fertilizer run off, and countless other issues. Keeping our creeks clean helps to protect the entire watershed!

Do you have any cool or interesting finds in the creek?

Sarah: We found a salamander larva last year. Salamanders are

very sensitive creatures and don’t do well in polluted conditions so it was an excellent find. Identifying salamander larva is extremely challenging, but if I had to guess it might be a northern two-lined salamander which has been seen in Willowsford before. They have gills and live aquatically as larvae for 2-3 years before morphing into their adult stage which lives on land.

Willowsford’s Aquatic Wildlife Discovery is a fun way to explore our neighborhood creeks and check the water quality of our local watershed. I loved learning about the different creatures living in our neighborhood creeks and the importance of keeping our local stream and its creatures healthy. I hope that you can come next year!

Sisters that Sell Real Estate

HOW TO DECORATE MY HOME IN WILLOWSFORD WHILE IT’S ON THE MARKET?

Michelle: When it comes to selling your home in Willowsford, presentation is everything. The neighborhood already offers so much charm: the trails, the modern farm-style architecture, and those mountain views but buyers still need to feel something the moment they walk through the door.

Deborah: Exactly. You want buyers to imagine themselves living there. But at the same time, you still need to live comfortably while your home is listed. The trick is finding that balance clean and neutral enough to appeal to buyers, but still warm and welcoming for your day-to-day life.

Michelle: Let’s start with color. A lot of Willowsford homes have beautiful open layouts and tons of natural light. Sticking to light, neutral tones like soft beige, warm white, or greige makes rooms feel larger and more connected. Then you can add subtle accents maybe sage green or navy throw pillows to give it personality without overwhelming the space.

Deborah: Yes, and don’t underestimate texture. A cozy knit throw on the sofa, a woven basket by the fireplace, or a natural fiber rug in the entryway can make your home feel inviting. Buyers in Willowsford are drawn to the modern farmhouse aesthetic, a perfect blend of clean lines, warmth, and comfort.

Michelle: Let’s talk seasonal décor, too. Willowsford looks gorgeous in every season, but when your home’s on the market, keep it simple. Instead of a full fall display with pumpkins everywhere, try a single wreath and some fresh flowers on the table. During the holidays, a few elegant touches such as greenery, white lights, and candles go a long way.

Deborah: Agreed. And fresh greenery makes a huge difference! A vase of eucalyptus or a fiddle leaf fig can brighten a room instantly. It signals freshness and care: two things every buyer notices subconsciously.

Michelle: Now, the kitchen is always the heart of the home, especially here in Willowsford. Clear those countertops. Keep just a few stylish items: a wooden cutting board, a bowl of fresh lemons, or a clean coffee station. You want to highlight the space, not your stuff.

Deborah: Exactly! And the same goes for bathrooms. White towels, a simple soap dispenser, and maybe a small vase of flowers. It’s all about that spa-like, “move-in ready” feel.

Michelle: And let’s not forget curb appeal. The drive into Willowsford is stunning. Make sure your home’s exterior lives up to that first impression. Fresh mulch, trimmed bushes, and a clean front porch make a huge difference. A new doormat and a few potted plants can completely change how your home feels from the moment someone walks up.

Deborah: One last tip: before showings, open up the blinds, turn on all the lights, and play soft music. Willowsford homes have such beautiful layouts. Let the light and openness do the work for you.

Michelle:That’s the beauty of this community. It sells a lifestyle as much as a house. Clean, comfortable, elegant living surrounded by nature. If your décor reflects that, buyers will instantly connect.

Deborah: Exactly. Whether you’re downsizing, relocating, or moving up, the right touches can make all the difference. And when in doubt, less is more!

Michelle: If you’re thinking about selling, buying or want an investment property, call me at 703-568-7868 or email me at michelle@thepearlteam.com. I’d love to help you get your Willowsford home market-ready.
