The QIPCO Guineas Festival

FRIDAY 5TH MAY 2023
Official Racecard: £3.50

FRIDAY 5TH MAY 2023
Official Racecard: £3.50
On behalf of my brothers and fellow directors of QIPCO, I am extremely proud to welcome you to another outstanding QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket.
As you will know, my brothers and I share a passion for British horse racing and its rich history. We founded Qatar Racing in 2012 and base our extensive racing and breeding operations at Tweenhills in Gloucestershire. We began sponsorship of the QIPCO British Champions Series in 2011 and delight in the continued success of the worldrenowned and ground-breaking series, which commences with the QIPCO Guineas Festival this weekend and concludes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot in October.
This weekend we also celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King Charles III Horse racing has enjoyed a special relationship with the Royal Family for over 350 years from the sport’s founding patron, King Charles ll through to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Now we wish His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort the greatest success as they take up the baton with their own racehorses including Saga, who runs here at Newmarket this Coronation weekend
We truly recognise that young racegoers are the future of our sport and are proud to have launched ‘Club 26’ in conjunction with QIPCO
British Champions Series. Our aim is to bring 18 to 26-year-olds closer to the action on the finest 26 days of flat racing in Britain and to enthuse and educate them about this wonderful sport of Kings
The QIPCO British Champions Series Hall of Fame was launched in 2021, marking the 10th anniversary of our sponsorship. Earlier this week legendary ten-time Champion trainer Sir Michael Stoute was inducted along with Sea The Stars, the superstar winner of the 2000 Guineas in 2009. Two further Hall of Fame additions will be announced later this year
We know first-hand how special memories are made at the QIPCO Guineas Festival as our own Kameko became the fastest ever winner of the QIPCO 2000 Guineas in 2020 Kameko now stands alongside our other Qatar Racing stallions at Tweenhills, and we cannot wait for his first runners to hit the track next year. We wish connections similar good fortunes throughout the 2023 QIPCO British Champions Series and look forward to celebrating another sensational season of magnificent sport with you all.
HH Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al Thani Chief Executive Officer QIPCO HoldingA warm welcome to Newmarket Racecourse and the first day of the QIPCO Guineas Festival. We have three fantastic days of racing to look forward to, along with entertainment for all to enjoy off the track.
Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank QIPCO and British Champions Series for their support across the next three days here at the Rowley Mile.
We are also extremely grateful to bet365, RaceHorse Lotto and Nyetimber who are sponsoring races across today’s card. Nyetimber are kindly supporting the new Nyetimber Eclipse Lawn, which racegoers are encouraged to explore throughout the afternoon. We now have an eightrace card, with the Group 2 bet365 Mile being run here at Newmarket, having moved from Sandown Park following an abandonment.
The feature race today is the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes, run over 1 mile and 2 furlongs, often a chance to see some of the leading middle-distance horses for the first time in the season. Al Kazeem, Shirocco and Sixties Icon are amongst some of the great horses who have added their name to the roll of honour for this race
Wearedelightedtowelcomeanumberofcommunitygroupsandvolunteerstotheracecourse, who have been nominated as Community Champions. The winner will be announced this afternoon and will win a magnum of Nyetimber and a £1000 charity bet courtesy of John Christie
Looking ahead, we have two more fantastic days of racing as the QIPCO Guineas Festival continues, with both Classics, the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and QIPCO 1000 Guineas still to come. There are tickets available for both these days, where we will also be celebrating the coronation of King Charles III.
Across the season, we would like to thank the European Breeders Fund for their contributions to prize money and Al Basti Equiworld for their continued sponsorship of our Owners and Trainers facility. I hope that you all have a wonderful time here at Newmarket and wish all the horses and their connections the very best of luck.
Warm wishes,

We kicked things off here at Newmarket with the three-day bet365 Craven Meeting, a midweek bonanza with a habit for producing Classic clues. The meeting’s Craven Stakes and the Nell Gwyn Stakes gave the chance for colts and fillies with Guineas aspirations to test their mettle on the Rowley Mile in advance of this weekend’s QIPCO Guineas Festival
The proof is in the pudding, with last year’s Nell Gwyn winner Cachet following up in the QIPCO 1000 Guineas for George Boughey, while each the last two Craven winners Native Trail (2022) and Master Of The Seas (2021) both went on to finish second in the following month’s
We kick off May with another three-day meeting, the QIPCO Guineas Festival, which brings us the first two Classics of the season, with the 2000 Guineas for the colts and the 1000 Guineas for the fillies It’s been a vintage era for the Classics and hopefully we unearth a horse to follow in the footsteps of Sea The Stars (2009), Frankel (2011), Minding (2016) and Love (2020).
The highlight of the summer is the Boodles July Festival, where we’re never short of a story or two. However, all of the focus this year will inevitably be on the legendary Frankie Dettori, who’s in his final year of riding The July Cup is the last British Group One missing from his CV and there will be some reception for racing’s most popular figure if he can finally pull it off.
It would be rude to just focus on one race, though, as the July Festival is chock-full of top-class racing across the three days Both the Group Two July Stakes and the Group One Falmouth Stakes regularly feature quality fields, while the bet365 Bunbury Cup is a hugely popular (and competitive) curtain-raiser for the big one.
Attention turns to the bet365 Cambridgeshire meeting as we head into the autumn, as we host our hugely popular three-day meeting. This meeting encapsulates the here and now as well as looking to the future, with the ultra-competitive handicap complimented by some top two-year-old contests. Held on a blockbuster Saturday afternoon of this meeting are the Group One Middle Park Stakes for the colts and the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes for the fillies Run over six furlongs, both races are seen as early pointers for the following year’s Guineas.
Continuing the theme of looking forward is the Dubai Future Champions Festival, on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th October. The clue is very much in the name, but this weekend is where future stars are born and is headlined by the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes One of the most prestigious two-year-old races in Europe, this race boasts one of the most impressive roll of honours around and hopefully the next Classic winner is just around the corner

As a leading distributor of horse feed, bedding and supplements in the greater GCC area, I am once again immensely proud to support the Jockey Club at Newmarket Racecourses for the 2023 season.
Newmarket is credited as being where thoroughbred racing first started which is why so many from every corner of the world assemble and appreciate The Rowley Mile and The July Course.
As ever, the enthusiasm of Sophie Able and her team at Newmarket translates into a top class service for Owners, Trainers, Jockeys and Stable Staff and for that we are deeply grateful.
I would like to wish all those visiting Newmarket throughout the 2023 season, the very best of luck.
Have a wonderful day at the races today.

Salt Bay sets the form standard having finished a good third in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud last October and is respected, along with Victory Dance, who hasn’t been seen since his third-placed finish in the Tattersall Stakes Like A Tiger was an impressive winner over course and distance 16 days ago and is another who needs taking seriously, but preference is for CASTLE WAY. William Buick opts to ride the son of Almanzor over stablemate Victory Dance, which could give an indicator of his chance today, and he was impressive when scoring over this C&D on his final start as a juvenile
NATIVE TRAIL would be difficult to beat if running to the same level that saw him claim the Irish Guineas last year The son of Oasis Dream, whose only defeat at this venue came when finishing a gallant second in the 2000 Guineas, can get back to winning ways on his first start post wind surgery at the main expense of Light Infantry, who is 1lb superior on official ratings. Checkandchallenge merits consideration judged on his fourth in the Queen Elizabeth II, while Mutasaabeq is not ruled out, though he may struggle to concede weight all round.
Majestic Pride ought to prove popular following his recent C&D success, but a chance is taken on ICONIC MOMENT. A rapid improver on the all-weather, he was perhaps unfortunate to lose his unbeaten record having been denied a clear run at Chelmsford last time out The switch to turf shouldn’t pose a problem to the son of Harry Angel and James Tate’s charge can resume his progress Shouldvebeenaring is fancied to chase them home ahead of Benacre
THE GATEKEEPER finished a fair fourth over this trip at Musselburgh and a 1lb lower mark can see him build on that He is now rated 6lb above his last winning all-weather mark but remains relatively unexposed and could have a big say in proceedings Final Watch made a promising return to action, when also finishing fourth, over C&D last month and is feared most. Darkness completes the shortlist dropping in trip from his latest outing.
Hurricane Lane made a disappointing return to action when failing to get involved at Newbury last month and he will need to bounce back in first-time cheekpieces if he is to land this Therefore, preference is for WEST WIND BLOWS, who was last seen finishing a decent third in a Group 2 at Longchamp in October. He has run well fresh in the past and can make a winning return to action here Global Storm has proven to be capable of better than his latest showing and is another worthy of consideration.
Fly Pass made a promising start to her racing career when finishing a decent third at Beverley over this trip last month and there is likely more in her locker, but INDISPENSABLE boasts an appealing pedigree and could be worth siding with here. Her dam is an unraced sister to the useful Emmaus, who was Grade 2-placed at Woodbine during his career, and she is fancied to make a winning racecourse debut Sayidh Kingman is another to bear in mind for powerful connections.
INFINITE COSMOS was only narrowly denied by a useful rival when a short-head second on debut at Doncaster last October and the daughter of Sea The Stars could be hard to beat with the benefit of that experience Sahara Mist has a similar profile to the selection and could well prove to be the main danger Therapist made the frame in all three starts as a juvenile and is the clear pick of the remainder
LONGLAI accounted for Spinaround by a neck when the pair met at Kempton last month and Michael Wigham’s gelding can confirm that form, despite a 1lb swing in the weights. Tahitian Prince was not disgraced on his return to action recently and is entitled to improve for that outing Azano may not be the force of old but he cannot be ruled out off his current mark.

In addition to the titles, prestige, and prize money, the 2023 classic winning owners will also receive a photography commission of their winning horse from renowned portrait photographer Tom Shaw. Shaw, who has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars, photographs horses in the style of legendary equine artist George Stubbs. The idea was born during a late summer drive in the Cotswolds where the evening sun gently raked across the idyllic countryside, mirroring the backdrops that Stubbs often used in his paintings.

The QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll of honour, celebrates its 215th running in 2023 It is the first race in the 2023 QIPCO British Champions Series and has a prize fund of £500,000
Along with the QIPCO 1000 Guineas, also over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five English Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds - the others being the Betfred Derby and Betfred Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, and the extended 14-furlong St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.
Sir Charles Bunbury, who played an important role in the development of British racing, including overseeing the extension of The Jockey Club’s authority, was inspired to introduce the two youngest Classics - the 2000 Guineas for colts and fillies and the 1000 Guineas for fillies only The name derived quite literally from the initial prize fund for the race – 2,000 Guineas was in effect a guaranteed sweepstake, irrespective of the number of subscribers.
The inaugural running was won by Wizard, who gained £1,522 for his connections, in the silks of Yorkshire sportsman Christopher Wilson Bill Clift steered Wizard to that success and, five years later, completed a famous double for the same owner when partnering Charlotte to take the first running of the 1000 Guineas Both were trained by Tom Perren

The best is surely yet to come from the well-bred MAJESTIC PRIDE, who maintained his theme of race-by-race progress when scoring on return over C&D at the Craven meeting. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt made virtually all and was ridden out towards the finish, completing the victory in fine style. That made it four consecutive victories for the three-year-old.
The bet365 Craven Stakes
Newmarket
Thursday 20th April
Indestructible left his mark on the Craven Stakes here last month, winning by a length-and-a-quarter. The Karl Burke-trained colt pulled way into the lead after one furlong before being headed three furlongs out. He then led again one furlong from the finish before he kept on well to take the honours. That was his second victory in five starts and is now set for his second run of the season.
The Darley Dewhurst Stakes
Newmarket
Saturday 8th October
Chaldean made it four consecutive victories for trainer Andrew Balding with a narrow win over Royal Scotsman in the Dewhurst Stakes in October. He was slowly into stride that day but led over six furlongs out.Jockey Frankie Dettori then got the answer he was looking for as the son of Frankel found just enough to fend off the danger from Royal Scotsman. He is now set for his second start of the season.
The Futurity Trophy Stakes
Doncaster
Saturday 22nd October
The Aidan O’Brien-trained Auguste Rodin justified the market support to secure a comfortable success in the Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster in October. That victory made is three wins from four starts and is now currently the most popular choice to take the honours in the Qipco 2000 Guineas.
RACE DESCRIPTION: For four-year-olds and above, this one and a half mile contest is a Group 2 and will attract some of the highest-quality middle distance horses around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 2 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 1lb and fillies 8st 12lb although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 3lb penalty.
After winning at Newcastle two weeks prior to this, Living Legend followed that up nicely with a length-and-threequarter victory over short-priced favourite Yibir Trainer Mark Johnston has a fine record in this race and since teaming up with son Charlie, the pair continued that excellent record

Andrew Balding admits it would be a “big deal” if Chaldean could follow in the hoof prints of his mighty sire Frankel to give legendary jockey Frankie Dettori “the send-off he deserves” on his last ever QIPCO 2000 Guineas ride at Newmarket on Saturday (6th May)
The Juddmonte-owned colt will bid to double his tally of Group One wins when contesting the opening Classic of the season and give Dettori a fourth 2000 Guineas success in his final year in the saddle. Dettori, who announced in December that he would be retiring from riding in 2023, steered Chaldean to victory last year in both the Group Two Coral Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes on the Rowley Mile. However, the 52 year old saw their unbeaten partnership come to an end when he was unseated as they left the stalls during last month’s Group Three Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes at Newbury
Despite the minor on track setback Balding remains confident that Dettori, who has since partnered Chaldean in a piece of work back at the Classic-winning handler’s base in Kingsclere, can atone for that mishap in the prestigious mile prize. Balding said of his star three-year-old, whose father Frankel demolished the field in this race 12 years ago: “We will only know on Saturday what we missed out on at Newbury and the benefits of having a run as obviously it would have been far more a benefit for him to have had a jockey on board and have a proper race.
“At the same time, it wasn’t totally lost as he had to go through the preliminary tests of saddling, walking around the paddock and cantering down to the start, which are the extras that go with a run and not just a gallop at home.
“Thankfully he didn’t go and do another circuit loose He was fairly sensible.
“I couldn’t be happier with him at the moment and Frankie rode him on Saturday and he worked extremely well It was a very solid piece and his fitness levels are as good as we could hope for in the circumstances.
“Frankie has been, throughout my career in racing, the standout jockey It would be wonderful if we can contribute in giving him the send-off he deserves.
“I think if you were giving him a ride in the St Leger that would be a bit more pressure as it would be his last Classic ride We just hope we have found him something worthy enough for this occasion
“I’m just delighted we have got him and even at his age he is still an extraordinary jockey and I’m sure we won’t be lacking in assistance in the saddle.
“You don’t get many chances to win a Classic and it would be a big deal to win the race. He is a Dewhurst winner going into the 2000 Guineas that is fit and healthy and that might only happen twice in my training career so you want to take these opportunities if you can.”
Although initially disappointed to see Chaldean beaten on his debut at Newbury in June, Balding admits that the result might have turned out to be a blessing in disguise in many ways.
Balding said: “He was among the first crop of Juddmonte yearlings that we were allocated which was a big deal for the yard and being by Frankel he was an obvious highlight from the minute he came in from that point of view.
“It didn’t work first time out but it was a sharp learning process for him He got in a pocket then lost ground at a vital stage, but he hit the line very well
“We were expecting him to win, I wouldn’t lie, but at the same time he learned plenty from the experience and showed plenty of promise.
“As it turned out it probably helped his season as it meant he went and won his maiden slightly later in the summer which meant he was eligible for the Acomb which was the perfect next step to give him a springboard into those better races and the rest worked out perfectly.
“From day one he has been a total professional and a real pleasure to train He showed plenty of ability early in his work but
as we got racing funnily enough his work has become a bit more workmanlike
“I remember talking to Barry Mahon, who is the racing manager for Juddmonte, around the time of the Acomb saying that his work is not as spectacular as it was earlier on in the year and we were slightly concerned.
“But then his racecourse performances improved to win an Acomb, a Champagne Stakes and a Dewhurst.”
While both the ground and the track raise no question marks, one box Chaldean still has to tick is his ability to be able to stay a mile.
However, from what he has seen so far Balding is confident that he will have no problem getting the additional furlong in his bid to give Frankel his first domestic 2000 Guineas winner as a sire.
He added: “He always felt like seven was never going to be a problem and I would be very surprised if the mile was an issue. “Frankel stayed a mile and a quarter himself and he has been an influence, weirdly, for horses to stay further than you think they are going to stay
“There is a lot of speed on the dam’s side at the same time so it is not a given but he relaxes well and I would very much hope the mile wouldn’t be a problem.
“We do put a red hood on him in the paddock as Ryan (Moore) felt after York (Acomb) that he just got a little bit keen going to the start and I’d rather not take any chances so that is why we have it, but as you see out in exercise he is the most laid back creature
“He is a horse that can be ridden one of three ways and he is a horse that goes on any ground so that takes two of the concerns out of the equation, it is just a case of him running faster than the others on the day and staying the trip.”
Balding already has one QIPCO 2000 Guineas success to his name, having saddled the now-retired Kameko to glory in the 2020 renewal, which was run behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 restrictions put in place.
And although Kameko and Chaldean have distinct similarities going into the race, Balding admits the experience would be a complete contrast to the one he witnessed three years ago
He added: “Kameko and Chaldean are very similar in that they are both Group One winners at two and they both have great attitudes with tonnes of ability.
“We have run horses in Classic races before and you don’t know if they are quite up to it, whereas both Kameko and Chaldean have deserved to be there.
“When we won it with Kameko it was a month later and virtually every horse in the race was having its first run of the year so no one really knew where we were at as we hadn’t been back racing long.
“It was all a bit of a guessing game but I think it was a very good Guineas and they run it at a strong pace. It was a proper test and Kameko came through with flying colours
“Covid was difficult for a lot of people and it was a weird experience on a racecourse during that time, but whoever wins it on Saturday will have a different experience.”
While excited about the chances of Chaldean, Balding believes that the Aidan O’Brien-trained pair of ante-post favourite Auguste Rodin and stablemate Little Big Bear will be the two horses to beat in what he believes is an “above average” 2000 Guineas
He added: “I think the two of Aidan’s at the top of the market looked exceptional last year We’ve not really got any form with them as we never raced Chaldean against either of them.
“I think there are some strong English entries, like Royal Scotsman who ran us close in the Dewhurst so he has to be respected. It looks an above average Guineas to me.
“We have done everything we can and on the day it will be over the horse and Frankie and receiving a bit of luck.”
The QIPCO 2000 Guineas is the first race in the 2023 QIPCO British Champions Series.

The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body:The Jockey Club
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing. Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys.
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century.
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.
Our industry experts don’t believe that one size fits all, because everyone’s ambitions are different.

Our involvement in community and charitable activities in Newmarket has the single aim of making a positive impact to Newmarket as a whole. Whether it’s a collaborative role in some of the large number of ongoing community projects or using our own resources and expertise, we enjoy playing our part. Our community work has taken many different forms over the years, and continues to evolve to match the ever changing needs of Newmarket and its residents. Examples include support of the ongoing education programmes in conjunction with Godolphin at local primary schools and the Newmarket Academy, as well as being involved in improvements to the Memorial Gardens. More recently, during the pandemic organisations from right across Newmarket came together to support the town and its residents. This included setting up helplines, delivering food parcels and organising a Christmas parade The relationships and positive momentum created during the last few years has continued, with recent projects including:
– Improving the Yellow Brick Road
– Clearing the Community Orchard
– Partnering with Newmarket Open Door
– Delivering ongoing talks on road safety in local schools
– Supporting the grassroots teams of Newmarket FC We have plenty more projects in the pipeline and for as long as The Jockey Club is in Newmarket, we will remain committed to contributing positively to the community Our community work also extends to longer term initiatives to help the town, Such as being involved in an exciting new initiative called The Newmarket Charitable Foundation.

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials ensure that racecourses delivers these standards. In addition Haydock Park Racecourse employs a minimum of three veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
